htc evo root and wireless tether - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Hi wondering if its possible to root and use wireless tether for the new htc evo. I see they have the hotspot installed but its a monthly fee service. Can I use the wireless tether like I use to on the hero?
Thanks

much like sublimenal above, I'm new to XDA, and I'm jumping in because this is the place to be for the How-to.
Can someone direct me as to where to read up specifically on the the EVO root and tether process? Am I jumping the gun, and there is a walkthrough in development?
Regardless, thank you ahead.

Hey there, actually i just did it yesterday. It was extremly simlple, nothing like rooting the hero and took me about 3 minutes total lol. Here is the process.
1. on your phone go to http://unrevoked.com/m/
2. download the apk file
3. install the apk file and click start
4. you are rooted!
5. go to this url and scan the code with barcode scanner http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...name=wireless_tether_2_0_2-pre14.apk&can=2&q=
6. install the tether app
7 run the tether app and your solid!

foserious? Man! THANK YOU!
I'm gonna do this right now!

Yeah I couldn't believe it, the hero took me a few hours to figure out how to root/tether even with the tutorials. This was extremely simple, i guess it works for the hero as well but only if you didn't install the 2.1 update.

man, thank you so much. Everything went awesomely.
Now it's time for me to donate to these code commanders.

If you want to install custom roms dont use unrevoked root.

whats wrong.
Why is everyone's evo working on tether and mine i always have problems. If its that simple i would think mine would work.I got tether running and says limited connectivity on my laptop. Also i downloaded the tether on the market place.Could that be the wrong tether...??

please check your tether log, and post any pertinent info.
Also, does your laptop identify the connection as Ad Hoc? What IP does your laptop get if any? Are you using any features with tether like WEP?
Details plz.

Thank you..................
I want to thank everyone that has helped me figure everything out.Just a few things i need to know.
1. Can sprint find out your using tether?
2. Are there settings i can adjust so no one can use tether but me?That way not anybody can connect to it?
3.When using tether,is it best to turn on 4g or is it okay with 3g running?
4. Can i connect more then one device using tether??
Thank you all...

Step 5
Ok i clicked on the url to scan the code and the page wont load. Any suggestions, or maybe different link? I got a 502 server error.

please help..newby...
hi all..please dont be hard on too hard on me for not being a "tech wizard" but I have a couple of questions..I just bought the EVO and I am new to android OS I have always been a windows user so I am pretty clueless on how the android operating system really works my main concern is being able to tether with the EVO with my TP2 I was able to use walking hotspot which now I cant use with android and pda.net which I cant use with my Ipad unless my android device is rooted.can someone post step by step instructions on how to "root" to be able to tether and also if there is a way to "back up" my info just incase something happens.and what to do if I want to restart the phones to the original factory settings just incase I decide to return the device within my 30 day trial..I am hoping all the battery tricks work and I am able to tether with out a problem if not this baby is going back to the store..thanks and I apologize in advance for my ignorance with this topic.I have owned windows mobile devices since it was first introduced so I am clueless to anything else

I'd start by looking in the correct forum or using search.

Sprint monitors data usage, however if you look at your bill the extra $10usd that you are paying gives you unlimited data usage on 3g and 4g. Just be aware that Sprint has reserved the right to throttle down your bandwidth.

[Q] Motorola Citrus Android 2.1

I have a Motorola citrus trying to get to wifi tether I think I got it rooted with superuser and downloaded wifi tether from market but the phones power cycles when i try to tether. Can anyone help me?
I just tried and had the same result as the original poster, looking for answers I found nothing. Though I did find this post so, BUMP for an answer please.
tethering on 2.1 citrus
I had the same result as above.
I successfully rooted with z4root
tried both
wireless tether for root
and
wifi tethering mesh
Same results, as soon as you start the tethering process, phone restarts..
side note: I know I am rooted as these apps only run if so, i've tried it..
anyone find a hack for running a few apps like 'mint' that are not available in market on the citrus.. even though 'mint' and my local banks app runs on android 1.6 and up
motorola support says the citrus only runs apk files, yet I found a work around to run java apps, just not 'mint' or my banks app runs
this is kind of like bait and switch, the citrus was advertised as being android 2.1 yet its a rather limited version.. its like fedora linux calling itself redhat linux although its based on redhat it isnt..
found one
'Barnacle Wifi Tether' from market worked on my citrus, i'll find out when i get my bill if its good or not regarding the tethering fees. but it worked in a 1 minute short test..
I came across some reviews which reminded me(on of all reviews one person with tmobile was charged):
so i would like to remind people some basics of tethering
1. dont do computer operating system updates on tether
2. dont download torrents or do filesharing on tether
3. dont use a extreme amount of data..
that said I would recommend using a firewall on you computer to block any applcations that might do any of above, and use it when your tethering...

[Q]

Whew. Ok, well, I am new to rooting and such and also new to smartphones in general. First, I must explain what I am attempting to achieve by modding and rooting my droid x.
I am trying to use my droid as a modem for an xbox 360. I have already rooted my phone with z4root. I am using barnacle wifi tether in order to connect the 360 slim to a wireless WAN. I am able to connect online; however, I would like to get a better speed, so after spending all day going though threads online, I have found a possible solution. Due to the fact that I am new to this I am at a loss with all the jargon and apps. It appears that by setting up a new ROM I will be able to get into the system root files to modify the throttle lock on the phone. This is all in theory, of course, from what I have located. All the tutorials I have looked into do not give enough info to fully understand and use their methods. Currently on my phone, I have an installed PDAnet which i am using for wired internet on my PC. (I do not have internet at my residence currently.) It also seems I am having issues downloading some files online, maybe due to timeout or something, but I cannot be sure. As you can guess, this is getting pretty frustrating. I am also running ROM manager. I am at the point where I cannot go any further in what I am attempting to do unless I get assistance. Also, Youtube seems fairly useless in this particular issue and variations of this issue.
So in short, I ask that someone please assist me with this and be as detailed as you can to clear up any miscommunication. Please use and/or explain any jargon that you use.
Thank you for any posts that you make in response. I will be looking into this thread for posts.
Also. I am currently running The default android and did a Factory Data Reset. It is Android Version 2.2.1.
DROIDX
UPDATE
I also installed adb and SDK, wifi tether, droidx bootstrapper, no frills CPU controller, Terminal Emulator, and root explorer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863923 I followed this post and im caught in a snag. when i run "java -jar baksmali.jar -o classout/ classes.dex" in CMD im getting this error "unable to access jar file baksmali.jar"
Also can someone please post a link to a nandroid backup tut for a droidx

I Am new to this site. First i would like to say, i have been watching from the sidelines for a few days, and decided its best if i join, and show support to all you hard working people.

[Q] Mobile Access Point?

My previous phone was a Captivate. I know by flashing Paragon you can use the phone as a Mobile Access Point. By doing this I basically made the phone a mobile wifi hub.
Is that a possibility with the Skyrocket?
Is there any way I can implement that now?

You can do it easily with the Stock ROM, Root, and Titanium Backup. All you have to do is "freeze" the Tethering Manager apk and then you can use the Wifi Sharing which is directly built into Gingerbread. Be careful of your carrier's snooping.
assuming you have at&t, you can use various apps to use the phone as WiFi hotspot. Be careful at&t is catching up with many apps and are billing there customers with tethering fee. Alternatively you're phone already has tethering built in. When using a custom ROM like CM7 tethering is hidden from your carrier.
I dont understand why AT&T feels it necessary to retard their phones just to milk their customers.
I understand they are greedy money-hoarding automatons, but really? If you're going to provide a phone service, provide service for the entire capability of the phone don't stop half way. I'd anticipate an official response like Dear Customer, It requires money to run these services. We want paychecks. Fork it over.
I'd love to poke holes in that perspective but truth is that it won't get me anywhere at this point in time.
Anyway - thanks for the heads up.

1. Root your phone (guides available if you search)
2. Install Titanium Backup (available in the market)
3. Freeze Tethering Manager (tap on app, and select Freeze)
It really is that simple.

I'm pretty sure AT&T can and does detect tethering/hotspot usage regardless of which ROM you flashed. Not sure the mechanism they use, but it might be their servers pinging your device and seeing TTLs that are greater than 1, or some other packet inspection.
The root/freeze app method works fine, but it won't prevent carrier detection. Cyanogen's Koushik has an alpha app out that purportedly evades detection, but you have to use it in conjunction with a laptop. So, no standalone hotspot with that one.
I said to hell with it and just froze the tethering manager. My plan is on a business account anyway so AT&T can bite me.

You could. That does seem like a great way to chew through your data plan limits in a hurry, though.
I have an unlimited plan. But really just for setup. I got my dada a new TV and it needs a firmware update but it can only get one thru a wifi connection and my dad does not have internet.

[HACK][4GHOTSPOT] 4G router as wifi hotspot with good battery life suggestions

Hi Guys,
I am trying to have a good 4G wifi hotspot, please share your thoughts?
Some requirements:
1) I want to have a full control over the device, if able to run a linux directly will be the best or some kind of router linux, which can setup firewall , VPN etc on it.
2) Good battery life, like able to have 15-20 hours usage time.
3) Not too heavy, less than 250g.
4) Cost less than 150 USD.
Some of my thoughts:
1) Have an android phone which was able to be hacked to have full control(run linux directly etc), turn it into a 4G hotspot only, and remove the screen connection to save battery(no need to have a display).
2) Using something like "GlocalMe G3" or "GlocalMe U2", and have it hacked to have full control. (I have the U2 device, looks like it is using MSM8909, and running android, but I am not able to hack into it yet, may need some helps from you guys).
PS: not able to post the link, pls try to google "GlocalMe U2" if you want to learn more about the device.
Thank you for sharing your ideas.

I bought a device called a sapphire touch which appears to use the exact same hardware as the GlocalMe G3, I took it apart and got some pictures of the hardware and am interested in getting a better rom installed or see if I can side load some apps.
Info and pics here, please add any info, would to be able to get developer mode enabled and install a custom boot loader to start.
