My previous phone was a Captivate. I know by flashing Paragon you can use the phone as a Mobile Access Point. By doing this I basically made the phone a mobile wifi hub.
Is that a possibility with the Skyrocket?
Is there any way I can implement that now?

You can do it easily with the Stock ROM, Root, and Titanium Backup. All you have to do is "freeze" the Tethering Manager apk and then you can use the Wifi Sharing which is directly built into Gingerbread. Be careful of your carrier's snooping.
assuming you have at&t, you can use various apps to use the phone as WiFi hotspot. Be careful at&t is catching up with many apps and are billing there customers with tethering fee. Alternatively you're phone already has tethering built in. When using a custom ROM like CM7 tethering is hidden from your carrier.
I dont understand why AT&T feels it necessary to retard their phones just to milk their customers.
I understand they are greedy money-hoarding automatons, but really? If you're going to provide a phone service, provide service for the entire capability of the phone don't stop half way. I'd anticipate an official response like Dear Customer, It requires money to run these services. We want paychecks. Fork it over.
I'd love to poke holes in that perspective but truth is that it won't get me anywhere at this point in time.

I'm pretty sure AT&T can and does detect tethering/hotspot usage regardless of which ROM you flashed. Not sure the mechanism they use, but it might be their servers pinging your device and seeing TTLs that are greater than 1, or some other packet inspection.
The root/freeze app method works fine, but it won't prevent carrier detection. Cyanogen's Koushik has an alpha app out that purportedly evades detection, but you have to use it in conjunction with a laptop. So, no standalone hotspot with that one.
I said to hell with it and just froze the tethering manager. My plan is on a business account anyway so AT&T can bite me.

You could. That does seem like a great way to chew through your data plan limits in a hurry, though.
I have an unlimited plan. But really just for setup. I got my dada a new TV and it needs a firmware update but it can only get one thru a wifi connection and my dad does not have internet.

Hey there, actually i just did it yesterday. It was extremly simlple, nothing like rooting the hero and took me about 3 minutes total lol. Here is the process.
1. on your phone go to http://unrevoked.com/m/
2. download the apk file
3. install the apk file and click start
4. you are rooted!
5. go to this url and scan the code with barcode scanner http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...name=wireless_tether_2_0_2-pre14.apk&can=2&q=
6. install the tether app
7 run the tether app and your solid!

Yeah I couldn't believe it, the hero took me a few hours to figure out how to root/tether even with the tutorials. This was extremely simple, i guess it works for the hero as well but only if you didn't install the 2.1 update.

If you want to install custom roms dont use unrevoked root.

Why is everyone's evo working on tether and mine i always have problems.If its that simple i would think mine would work.I got tether running and says limited connectivity on my laptop.Also i downloaded the tether on the market place.Could that be the wrong tether...??
please check your tether log, and post any pertinent info.
Also, does your laptop identify the connection as Ad Hoc? What IP does your laptop get if any? Are you using any features with tether like WEP?

hi all..please dont be hard on too hard on me for not being a "tech wizard" but I have a couple of questions..I just bought the EVO and I am new to android OS I have always been a windows user so I am pretty clueless on how the android operating system really works my main concern is being able to tether with the EVO with my TP2 I was able to use walking hotspot which now I cant use with android and pda.net which I cant use with my Ipad unless my android device is rooted.can someone post step by step instructions on how to "root" to be able to tether and also if there is a way to "back up" my info just incase something happens.and what to do if I want to restart the phones to the original factory settings just incase I decide to return the device within my 30 day trial..I am hoping all the battery tricks work and I am able to tether with out a problem if not this baby is going back to the store..thanks and I apologize in advance for my ignorance with this topic.I have owned windows mobile devices since it was first introduced so I am clueless to anything else

Sprint monitors data usage, however if you look at your bill the extra $10usd that you are paying gives you unlimited data usage on 3g and 4g. Just be aware that Sprint has reserved the right to throttle down your bandwidth.
Unsure if this is possible - I've recently moved on to Gummy Charged (EP1F) release and have found that it did not include the Mobile Hotpot application (Verizon version).
Is it possible for someone to take the (apk?) from a stock(ish) rom and upload it so that I can install it onto this rom?
I am paying for the wireless tether service and would simply like to use their application to do so. (I am trying to avoid going back to stock to try to rip the application to put gummy charged back on) - can anyone assist?
Mobile hotspot is built into the framework afaik, and doesn't come in apk form. However, I'm on kejar's rom and I have mobile hotspot available in my apps list.

I can't even explain how it happened, but I reinstalled gummycharged and it was THEN in my apps list. I just came back to update when I found your response.
Why pay for the service? If you are rooted run something like android tether for root. This plus unlimited plan is the best choice in my opinion

I have recently developed a privacy protection application for Android.
You can use it to block access for any installed application to the following data separately:
Device ID (IMEI/MEID/ESN)
Subscriber ID (IMSI)
SIM serial (ICCID)
Phone and mailbox number
Incoming call number
Outgoing call number
GPS location
Network location
List of accounts (including your google e-mail address)
Account auth tokens
Contacts
Call logs
Calendar
SMS
MMS
Browser bookmarks and history
System logs
SIM info (operator, country)
Network info (operator, country)
For device ID, phone and mailbox number, SIM serial, subscriber ID and device location it also allows supplying custom or random values.
Unlike others (e.g., Permissions Denied or CM) this does not make applications crash when access to private data is blocked.
The following short video shows some of its functionality.
PDroid does not require ROOT or any Android permission to function, nor does it need any services running in the background. But it does require patching some ROM components, so that it needs to be ported to different devices. Currently it is available for Nexus One, Nexus S, Desire HD (Gingerbread) as well as Magic with CM 6.1 (Froyo).
So I am wondering if I should release it for public use and maybe port to other devices. I will only do so if you would like to use it, since it requires some fine-tuning to be more user-friendly. So please vote if you would like to use PDroid.
I would love to use this app on my galaxy s and tab.
Especially the point to give the apps random or custom information instead of just blocking the access is important.
If you need help testing the app on those mentioned devices just let me know

Kind of. The functionality is similar to that of LBE while I tried to account for its disadvantages, such as not being able to disallow access to some data (e.g., system logs, incoming and outgoing call numbers etc.), requiring root or being unreliable since LBE requires its protection service to be running so that malicious apps still can steal data if they are started before LBE after boot.

Yes, basically any device, for which Android can be directly built from AOSP (and this includes Nexus 4G) is supported right now.
Love to see it for the T-Mobile G2x especially if it is open.

Impossible, since the actual application logic performing the data access control is based on the Android application framework and not the SDK. Plus, doing it the LBE way requires root and will never be 100% reliable. In other words, there is no way of creating a proper solution without patching the ROM.
I would like to have this for t-mobile US Vibrant since we're getting no Gingerbread love from t-mo or Sammy and I'm all flashed out with nothing else to do.

Looks great. I'd love to get that on my Thunderbolt (CM7) would there be anyway to block permissions like internet and SD card access, I know Cyanogenmod lets you disable them but you have to reset your phone after a change for them to take effect. Also I don't know if it falls into the scope of what this project is intended for but I've seen people ask about making certain apps work on 3G that only work on wifi or the other way around if you could make an app think it was using one or the other for a connection I think that would be very helpful to some folks.
I'd test this on the t-mo Galaxy S2 if you're willing to do it...

Do you have a T-Mobile US device that redirects you to T-Mo's site whenever you try to wireless or USB tether your computer? Here are two work arounds to stop that:
Difficulty: Easy. ROM: Any. Description: Spoof computer web browser to say 'Android' when loading web pages.
1) Install an EU ROM. Any ROM based on T-Mobile US has a script that will block tethering if Android is not recommended.
2) (SUGGESTED) (Avoiding the script) No root needed. No APN switching (because that sh!t does not work). You need to spoof your computer's web browser to an Android device. Go on your add-ons/extensions installing page (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, maybe more) and search for a user account spoofer / switcher. I am on Chrome and I use 'Chrome UA Spoofer'. Select the Android Motorola Xoom device to spoof to. Tether via wireless or USB and it works constantly. The only downside is that some pages load in mobile view. You can easily select to show full web page. I used this for multiple hours, multiple PCs, multiple different times and never was redirected to T-Mo asking me to add tethering to my plan.

The APN thing does work; I use it daily for my Fire, and my laptop on occasion. Not to mention the FCC just smacked Verizon for $1.25M for blocking customers from tethering with third party apps, so T-Mobile should follow soon to avoid a similar fine.

T-Mobile should be stopped for that. But I have to say the the APN did not work for me. It worked for about 20 minutes, then I was never able to connect again.

Actually they don't have to allow tethering, nor will they be fined. This was a rule specific to LTE implementations. Since T-Mo is on HSPA+, those rules in no way apply to them.
Also, to the OP -- this works, but you need to keep in mind that it only would apply to web browsing. Tethering is detected via packet identification. The combination of the TTL (time to live) and the device (Android vs computer, etc) gives tethering away. If you were to use bittorrent on your computer, the packets would be identified as computer, and with a computer TTL.
Dang, that sucks. I thought it had to do with data limits, since they aren't required to allow it for their unlimited customers.

It's been figured out over on the Sensation forum. It's a tether apn set to be hidden in the apn.xml found inside the framework.apk, if I recall correctly. Steve from the Elegancia Rom should be able to help.

How did you get FoxFi to work? I tried it and said it won't work on this device. And when I use bluetooth, the tethered device can't do certain things outside of the browser.

Nothing special, I just download the app, launch the app (did go into settings and set security code) It just work no problems.

Then you are using the wrong rom,I was using Elegancia rom and it worked for me. You can't just root the stock rom and expect it to work, there is a separate hidden tether apn built into the framework.apk I believe.

I'd suggest this one, which you can use to navigate to the search engine of your choice and use it to look up how to open Settings, then click on "Network" and finally click on "Hotspot & tethering".

I was asking specifically about an app that bypasses carrier restrictions. The current SIM card/plan I have is 5G unlimited, but does not permit tethering. I was looking for an app that automates APN, TTL, etc.

I know you're not getting responses exactly to your query and situation; so here's my attempt -- although I'm unsure if they would be consider the "best root tether app"...
I figure, since you're asking for "root", you're probably looking for modules...
A quick google search popped up these top 3 results:
Tether Unlock Github (while last version released was '20, there are some people that still use Titanium Backup; you never know what still might work)
Tethering Enabler; This one is much older...I wonder how effective it might be. But you never know...
X Tether (Xposed Module); Another old one. I wonder if it might work -- especially considering Android OS version it was made for and/or if something like LSPosed might be able to take it on...
Point is, there are some options that you can try if you google with the search term "magisk" "module" & "tether" -- and although much of the results are out of date, it still might lead you to an unexpected solution or a newer development being done. Also, you could/should probably check out Magisk or LSPosed repositories. I know you were looking for the latest best -- especially considering you are posting in Google's latest device (if you don't consider the Fold yet) -- but apparently it's not something super actively developed on...

But more importantly both apps are very outdated (prolly EOL), and don't support Pixel 7 -- most likely due to being 32-bit.
I wish those did still work... it's what i used for years and what I'm most familiar with...
PDANet works fine on my pixel 7.
