[TMO][MOD] TMobile Native Tether fix 4.4.2 (AOSP and stock based ROMs) - Moto X Themes and Apps

So, I recently decided to give T-Mobile a try since I think Big Red is becoming more and more evil by the day... To my dismay, I discovered that trying to use the native tether on T-Mobile just redirected me to a "My Account" page. This was thoroughly disheartening. Early attempts at looking into this pointed me to this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2567579
However, that appears to only apply to 4.4. I installed Gummy rom which is on 4.4.2, and flashing that zip just caused a bootloop (because the framework-res.apk had changed).
Well after further digging, I ended up finding a fix over in the Nexus 5 forums (Specifically, this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=47203432&postcount=70)
EDIT: The following worked for me on gummy ROM. So I think this is the fix for AOSP based ROMs. Read further down for the stock based solution discovered by pelebkf
So, long story short, in order to get your native tethering to bypass the T-Mobile redirect page, you want to:
Download SQLite Editor: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.sqleditor&hl=en
(If you don't want to spend $3, you could transfer the file mentioned below to your computer and do it on an sqlite editor there. The free sqlite editors in the market didn't work for me. This one worked like a charm)
EDIT: This free sqlite editor has been claimed to work fine as well: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.htsoft.sqleditor&hl=en
Open the following file in SQLite Editor (or transfer to computer and open there): /data/data/com.android.provider.settings/databases/settings.db
Open the "global" table and add the following entry:
label: tether_dun_required
value: 0
Back out of the app and reboot, and then tethering should be working fine!
Stock based ROM method (give a thanks to pelebkf for figuring this out!)
Go to Settings-> "More..." (under Data Usage) -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names
Click the APN "T-Mobile US LTE", scroll down to "APN Type", click that, and add ",dun" to the end of the list (so the list should say "default, mms, supl, hipri, fota, dun") then hit okay. You should be set now!

Just attempted this fix on stock and my hotspot usage is still increasing while using a user agent switcher in chrome.
My nexus 4 however works fine with this fix and the same setup.
Wondering what the difference between the 2 are.

This didn't work for me. I still get redirected, running 4.4.2. TMO OTA. Tried to flash the old framework-res.apk and now phone won't boot, so I'm sitting in recovery. Does anyone have the stock framework-res handy? Any other suggestions on tethering?

I did this on Gummy ROM. I will flash stock at some point and try to take a look for you. Girlfriend is in town visiting so it might not be till after the weekend though.

FYI I am working on trying to get this to work on the stock. Think I may have it. Will post as soon as I find out step by step.

Awesome, thanks! I made the stupid mistake of running the OTA today and needing tether today.... Guess I'll have to live with 56k wifi.

Hey If someone with STOCK 4.4.2 could try this for me.
Edit the main APN "T-Mobile US LTE" and add ",dun" to the end of the "APN type" (so the it should say "default, mms, supl, hipri, fots, dun") then save it.
Then using a User Agent Switcher check and see if you Smartphone Mobile Hotspot Increases or stays the same in data usage.
This seems to have worked for me with NO other modifications.

Well I'll be damned, it worked! What a simple fix. Posting from usb-tethered VPN connection now!
All's good on the Moto X 4.4.2 TMO tethering front!
Thanks!!

Nice find! Thanks for saving me the trouble

Nice seems to work; I've got Moto X Dev. Edition, rooted stock 4.4.2 and on T-Mobile US.
BTW, SQlite Editor Pro (free) worked fine for me from Google Play for the 1st post, then I added "dun" to the APN as suggested above. Thx.

Thanks for pointing that out! I'll update the OP

Bugger... I was using the hotspot today and listened to a youtube song fine, went to a website fine, then youtube went to autoplay the next song and I got the t-mobile upsell page... Checked some other tabs, they were all getting it now. I applied both hacks in my op (i'm on kangakat at the moment), rebooted, and i'm still getting the upsell page. Says I don't have hotspot or I've used my allotted monthly limit. Haven't had any luck with it yet, but i also haven't really given it any time. Anyone else run into this? I'm on that $30/month prepaid plan.

Well I install Pac Rom and without making any adjustments, hotspot works perfectly. I noticed "dun" was absent from all APNs.
Sent from my Moto X using xda app-developers app

Has anyone found a way to make it work on Kangakat (Stock based rom)? Followed all the steps and does not work. Thanks!!
Sent from my XT1053 using xda app-developers app

this no longer works right? Can someone confirm?
I heard tmobile blocked this method now

Try and let us all know! As far as I know it doesn't work!

It's hard for me to test now as I've upgraded my plan to simple choice, where hotspotting is included in the data (e.g. my 3GB plan means i am free to tether as much of my 3GB as I want). Thus, I no longer have a "mobile hotspot usage" in my billing, so I can't actually see what it recorded as having been used.

I am on simple choice unlimited data and it still works based on the T-Mobile app. I am completely stock.

i think thats because the simple choice allows you to tether until you used up your allowed 4G data (then its throttled to 2g) except if you are on the truely unlimited data at 4G speeds they only allow 5GB of tethering.

I have the unlimited 4g data (grandfathered 70/m plan) which allows for 3gb tethering.
According to the t mobile my account app my tethering data is not being used after this mod was done to the the APN.

htc evo root and wireless tether

Hi wondering if its possible to root and use wireless tether for the new htc evo. I see they have the hotspot installed but its a monthly fee service. Can I use the wireless tether like I use to on the hero?
Thanks
much like sublimenal above, I'm new to XDA, and I'm jumping in because this is the place to be for the How-to.
Can someone direct me as to where to read up specifically on the the EVO root and tether process? Am I jumping the gun, and there is a walkthrough in development?
Regardless, thank you ahead.
Hey there, actually i just did it yesterday. It was extremly simlple, nothing like rooting the hero and took me about 3 minutes total lol. Here is the process.
1. on your phone go to http://unrevoked.com/m/
2. download the apk file
3. install the apk file and click start
4. you are rooted!
5. go to this url and scan the code with barcode scanner http://code.google.com/p/android-wi...name=wireless_tether_2_0_2-pre14.apk&can=2&q=
6. install the tether app
7 run the tether app and your solid!
foserious? Man! THANK YOU!
I'm gonna do this right now!
Yeah I couldn't believe it, the hero took me a few hours to figure out how to root/tether even with the tutorials. This was extremely simple, i guess it works for the hero as well but only if you didn't install the 2.1 update.
man, thank you so much. Everything went awesomely.
Now it's time for me to donate to these code commanders.

Why is everyone's evo working on tether and mine i always have problems. If its that simple i would think mine would work.I got tether running and says limited connectivity on my laptop. Also i downloaded the tether on the market place.Could that be the wrong tether...??
please check your tether log, and post any pertinent info.
Also, does your laptop identify the connection as Ad Hoc? What IP does your laptop get if any? Are you using any features with tether like WEP?
Details plz.
Thank you..................
I want to thank everyone that has helped me figure everything out.Just a few things i need to know.
1. Can sprint find out your using tether?
2. Are there settings i can adjust so no one can use tether but me?That way not anybody can connect to it?
3.When using tether,is it best to turn on 4g or is it okay with 3g running?
4. Can i connect more then one device using tether??
Thank you all...
Step 5
Ok i clicked on the url to scan the code and the page wont load. Any suggestions, or maybe different link? I got a 502 server error.
please help..newby...
hi all..please dont be hard on too hard on me for not being a "tech wizard" but I have a couple of questions..I just bought the EVO and I am new to android OS I have always been a windows user so I am pretty clueless on how the android operating system really works my main concern is being able to tether with the EVO with my TP2 I was able to use walking hotspot which now I cant use with android and pda.net which I cant use with my Ipad unless my android device is rooted.can someone post step by step instructions on how to "root" to be able to tether and also if there is a way to "back up" my info just incase something happens.and what to do if I want to restart the phones to the original factory settings just incase I decide to return the device within my 30 day trial..I am hoping all the battery tricks work and I am able to tether with out a problem if not this baby is going back to the store..thanks and I apologize in advance for my ignorance with this topic.I have owned windows mobile devices since it was first introduced so I am clueless to anything else
I'd start by looking in the correct forum or using search.

Sprint monitors data usage, however if you look at your bill the extra $10usd that you are paying gives you unlimited data usage on 3g and 4g. Just be aware that Sprint has reserved the right to throttle down your bandwidth.

[ROM][12.23.10] Jiminy V (for Cricket) - 100% EVO 3.70.651.1 **OBSOLETE**

****THIS ROM IS NOW OBSOLETE*****
Install your favorite Sense based rom (I still haven't gotten MMS working in AOSP despite all my attempts) on your EVO flashed for Cricket
Use the dialer to edit EPST settings and configure the MMS server information:
mmsc: http://mmsmycricket.com/servlets/mms
mms proxy: wap.mycricket.com
Remember to set your MMS size limit in the msging app to 500k (higher settings don't seem to go through)
Enjoy.
****THIS ROM IS NOW OBSOLETE*****
****THIS ROM IS NOW OBSOLETE*****
****THIS ROM IS NOW OBSOLETE*****
I proudly present Jiminy, it is an EVO rom meant for Cricket subscribers. I now consider it a 100% working solution for Cricket subscribers that have MMS issues with Sprint based roms. This is targeted more towards people with the $55 Android plan that has the Android data features activated on it. If you are on the $45 or less plan you likely need to use token419's solution (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=730289) in addition to this rom to route data traffic through the cricket wap proxy.
The HTC MMS app is fully functional and already set to the 500k send size to work with Cricket. It can view all conversations properly. There is no need for a 3rd party MMS client.
Flashing this rom does NOT program your phone for Cricket, it is simply a rom optimized for full functionality on Cricket with none of the sprint crap you won't use. Your phone still must be reprogrammed either by a Cricket store with the Houdini software or by yourself (or someone who knows how) via QPST and CDMA workshop to have all the proper settings for putting the phone on the Cricket network. If your phone has not been reprogrammed for Cricket yet I would suggest using these instructions: http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...o-Flash-to-Cricket-with-Talk-Text-Wap-and-MMS
It might be a good idea to use a newer PRL than the one suggested in that guide (since it's old). I am attaching the most recent PRL I have to this post.
Rom is:
rooted
deodexed
busybox installed
data/app enabled
No Sprint bloatware
***************************************
Flash rom to device (a wipe is suggested) and then restore/import a working APN for Cricket (or maybe even MetroPCS).
Here are the contents of an APN.xml file that is known to work. Remember you MUST edit it with you own phone number, don't simply copy and paste it....
<?xml version='1.0' encoding='UTF-8' standalone='yes' ?>
<apns count="1">
<apn name="CDMA-MMS" numeric="46605" mcc="466" mnc="05" apn="mms" user="your10digit#[email protected]" server="NA" password="cricket" proxy="wap.mycricket.com" port="8080" mmsproxy="null" mmsport="null" mmsprotocol="null" mmsc="http://mms.mycricket.com/mycricket/mms.php" type="mms" />

***********changelog***********
Jiminy v1 - like v2 but with too many bugs lol -no longer hosted
Jiminy v2 - deodexed OTA 3.28.651.1 rom for EVO and the 3.21.651.1 OTA for the Incredible. g3a8614e kernel. Removed all market available apps (facebook, google maps, etc) so that they can be installed from market and updated in the future.
http://www.massmirror.com/2b70dfedce096c317481f922e8fa350b.html
Jiminy v3 - I never distributed it but ran it for almost 2 months (3.29 base with 3.21 Inc bits) with the kingxklick BFS #9 kernel - had a grand ol' time.
Jiminy IV - 100% 3.30.651.3 EVO base. No more hybrid with Incredible. MMS.apk is modified to work properly now. Everything works 100%. HDMI and 4G control are full restored. All stock apps restored minus Sprint bloatware. Hopefully this does not cause a problem with voicemail notifications now? I use Google Voice for mine so it won't matter, but if you use the Cricket voicemail then you might want to keep an eye on this lol. But more importantly, why aren't you using google voice for your voicemail anyway? It's free and infinitely awesome.

Jiminy V - 100% 3.70.651.1 Evo based off of aamikam's reengineered stock rom that has all the apks rebuilt to be smaller and faster. I think I forgot to add the multitouch keyboard back in, but go snag yourself a Gingerbread one instead anyway (and of course the oem supplied Swype is in there as well). As always it is de-Sprinted as well.
If some apps stop working over 3g (youtube and pandora) then your proxy settings might have been returned to Sprint. Follow these instructions to set them back to working settings for Cricket:
Dial ##3282#
edit mode
enter 000000 ok
goto advanced
scroll to RTSP proxy address and HTTP PD proxy address and change them to 0.0.0.0
hit back twice and now try youtube it should work!

Internet and GPS simply work, no settings
MMS is set by importing an APN xml file as I already stated. Use APN Backup and Restore from the market to do this.
This rom assumes you have the Android cricket plan. If you are on the $45 plan you probably still need to use Token419's cricket flash for that u2nl tunneling through the wap stuff.

Surprisingly little.
It turns out MMS.apk has a couple buddy apks in the /system/app folder. I haven't pinpointed exactly which ones are required and aren't. However, using pretty much the entire /system/app folder from the right Incredible rom in the right EVO rom seems to work pretty well.
Another key component to pulling it all together was to start the combination process using deodexed roms for the EVO and the Incredible as the source material. I tried with some odexed roms with no success. Deodexing removes some sort of device/framework related dependencies from what I understand.
It really wasn't too hard in the end, I can recreate the rom in just a few moments and will probably be able to do future ports in little time, but it took a LOT of trial and error to get to this point.
is it normal for it to kick back to 1x and auto make a slideshow?
ok was able to send myself a mms, but sent one to my girl and she hasnt gotten it yet. and ive been on 1x now for a few mins

Slideshow is what you get for now, lol. When I send the "slideshow" to my other phone (iphone) it just shows up as 1 picture. So unless it bothers you to see "slideshows" on your end I really don't see what the issue is. A very minor quirk and may just be how the Incredible mms app works.
No idea about the 1x stuff. Doesn't happen to me. Have you updated your phone to the latest radios?
Also, make sure anyone you send to does not have a 1 in front of their 10 digit number. It (or Cricket) doesn't appear to like that.

Nice. I'll pop this on my wife's EVO and post results. I spent a good half day till I got the MMS working properly on it, with the handcent/chompsms assist of course. I grabbed a Droid Incredible MMS.apk that's floating around somewhere here in the forums.

i think its just because where they are getting installed to. other roms ive seen have had same issues
**ok it wasn't Apps2SD***
Ok so it looks like any preinstalld apps don't like to update. I'll make another revision with a couple more tweaks but also strip out any apps available in the market. That way they can all be installed manually and should be able to update properly in the future.
In the mean time if you just pull the stuff off the device manually that won't update and then reinstall from the market I think you're good to go.
updated original post with new v2 information and links
also, I no longer consider the no MMS while wifi is on the last 1% I'm missing. It turns out that Android disables the mobile data connection when wifi is turned on (at least for CDMA devices). This can obviously be defeated as seen by the wifi tethering apps, but basically would require some recoding of the MMS app. I'm sure future updates to Android will probably iron this little annoyance out.
good job man
i have been working on this myself but you beat me to it i am working on a port myself for cricket that will have the proxy settings built into it for the peeps that don't want the android plan. but congrats and appreciate the hard work
Thank You So Very Much
Thank you very much for all of your hard work!
I appreciate the Cricket love for the Evo.
Thanks to your ROM (which works FLAWLESSLY and FAST AS ALL GET OUT) I'm able to enjoy my EVO 1000x's more than I have before.
I see a PayPal donation coming your way in the near future..... ;-)
Whoa, you know it's legit kudos when you're getting it from these two. ^
add the fact that you can add the kingklick #9 kernel to this and unlock FPS AND overclock and this rom is great. again thanks for your contribution.
I wouldn't run King's BFS #9 kernel. I experience 100% CPU usage lag that was associated with that kernel. I'd stick with #8.

[WIFI Tether] [TMOUS] Work Around - No Root Needed

Do you have a T-Mobile US device that redirects you to T-Mo's site whenever you try to wireless or USB tether your computer? Here are two work arounds to stop that:
Difficulty: Easy. ROM: Any. Description: Spoof computer web browser to say 'Android' when loading web pages.
1) Install an EU ROM. Any ROM based on T-Mobile US has a script that will block tethering if Android is not recommended.
2) (SUGGESTED) (Avoiding the script) No root needed. No APN switching (because that sh!t does not work). You need to spoof your computer's web browser to an Android device. Go on your add-ons/extensions installing page (Chrome, Firefox, Opera, maybe more) and search for a user account spoofer / switcher. I am on Chrome and I use 'Chrome UA Spoofer'. Select the Android Motorola Xoom device to spoof to. Tether via wireless or USB and it works constantly. The only downside is that some pages load in mobile view. You can easily select to show full web page. I used this for multiple hours, multiple PCs, multiple different times and never was redirected to T-Mo asking me to add tethering to my plan.
Why does this happen? Ever since Android 4.0, they added a script in the OS which does this. You cannot uninstall it because it is located very deep in the system (maybe you can, but no one has figured it out.) If you have a EU ROM (no wifi calling), then you will be fine to tether with no problems and no spoofing. Please click thanks if I helped
The APN thing does work; I use it daily for my Fire, and my laptop on occasion. Not to mention the FCC just smacked Verizon for $1.25M for blocking customers from tethering with third party apps, so T-Mobile should follow soon to avoid a similar fine.
Sent from my H1S using XDA Premium.
T-Mobile should be stopped for that. But I have to say the the APN did not work for me. It worked for about 20 minutes, then I was never able to connect again.

Actually they don't have to allow tethering, nor will they be fined. This was a rule specific to LTE implementations. Since T-Mo is on HSPA+, those rules in no way apply to them.
Also, to the OP -- this works, but you need to keep in mind that it only would apply to web browsing. Tethering is detected via packet identification. The combination of the TTL (time to live) and the device (Android vs computer, etc) gives tethering away. If you were to use bittorrent on your computer, the packets would be identified as computer, and with a computer TTL.
Dang, that sucks. I thought it had to do with data limits, since they aren't required to allow it for their unlimited customers.

How did you get FoxFi to work? I tried it and said it won't work on this device. And when I use bluetooth, the tethered device can't do certain things outside of the browser.

Then you are using the wrong rom,I was using Elegancia rom and it worked for me. You can't just root the stock rom and expect it to work, there is a separate hidden tether apn built into the framework.apk I believe.
T-MobileUS HTC One S running Stock Rooted 2.21.

[Q] ROM for GSM plus ability to add APNs???

I'm traveling on honeymoon right now and am having more problems than I expected getting my phone to work remotely. I was in London first, but was finally able to get my phone working with the "3" network.
Now I am in Malta and am having more problems. I purchased a "Go" card because the sales lady said that it would work, but after she activated it and I paid for it, she tried to add in the APN information and it wouldn't work.
I was using Cyanogenmod, but found I couldn't use GSM in London. So I installed CleanROM and was able to get that working. But now in Malta, I'm back to square one. In London I was able to use the program "HiAPN" to get the APN working. But it's not working here in Malta.
Any ideas out there?

I don't have a sure answer for you, but I'm taking an international trip shortly and have been looking into this problem before leaving so I can get data service abroad. So this is my plan, but be aware that I haven't actually used this yet to get service.
First thing, any AOSP ROM (Cyanogen, AOKP) will, as you found, not be able to get data service on GSM. You have to use a Touchwiz ROM.
The other problem is that the Verizon GS3 does not grant you the ability to edit your APNs manually. Verizon is supposedly going to fix this so you can edit APNs but I'm not holding my breath. In addition, as of Ice Cream Sandwich, Android does not allow apps to change your APN settings unless they are system apps.
So, our only option is to get an app that can change APN settings and convert it into a system app. HiAPN has this ability built-in and will make itself a system app if you OK it. There is a free app on the Play store that will make any app a system app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...pmover&feature=nav_result#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDNd
There are other ways to do it but that one is free and the app only does one thing.
Now you need an app that can change your APN settings. Again, since I haven't actually taken my trip yet I don't know if this will work for sure, but I've been messing around with a few apps (including HiAPN) and the one I plan to use is this one:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t#?t=W251bGwsMSwyLDEsImNvbS5TSU1BUE5DaGVjayJd
Most of the APN changer apps I came across are meant mainly for use in countries other than the USA and I found a lot of them hard to understand (HiAPN especially, some menus are in Chinese, some in broken, misspelled English). That one is simple to understand. It's free, but there's a paid version that adds the ability to browse the app's APN database (I guess so you can look at it before you take your trip and make sure the provider you plan to use is included in the APN database). The free version will just look at the SIM that's in the phone and try to find the right APN settings. The app's APN database is stored on the phone so you don't need a data connection to change providers.
So, install Offline SIM APN Database, use System App Mover to make it a system app, restart your phone, then run it. It will warn you about Ice Cream Sandwich and newer Android versions not being able to change APN settings, but it will still let you try to do it, which should work now that you've made it a system app. The app author mentions this possbility in the app description. Anyway, run it, hit Search APN Settings for this SIM, check if the settings look right, hit Add These Settings, Yes, and that should do it.
Let us know if that works!

USB Tethering - Disable Subscription Check XT926 KK 442bTethering & Hot Spot Nag

I want to disable the tethering/hot spot subscription status check. Following advice from other posters in these forums, I installed SQLite Editor and in the settings.db (in Settings Storage) changed the secure table value for entitlement_check from 1 to 0. Nothing changed, I still get the nag and I cannot tether to PC--even though my plan has GBs of available download. Any ideas?
Thanks!

Be sure to reboot after editing the value.
If that doesn't work, try this:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.pdanet
Free to try (demo only works for a few minutes at a time), if it works, the paid version is $8. Money well spent.

Thanks Planterz, appreciate the tip, I may try pdanet again. I already have another mobile tethering app, Clockworkmod Tether, but I a want native tethering without the carrier nag about subscriptions, like you get if you run a custom ROM--even if you don't have an unlimited plan. The CWM tether app also requires the installation of a separate app on the computer, which is a pain if you use a work PC or if you are on someone else's computer.
Thanks again!

When I was with Verizon I did the same thing on my Razr Maxx, but I can't recall ever USB tethering, just using the wi-fi hotspot, or using PdaNet with USB tethering (and the companion app on the computer - version 3.5). I know versions have changed, as well as Android versions and carrier "fixes", so what I did might now work now.
Try looking for a field (in the same place that you found the entitlement check) that reads "tether_dun_required". If it exists, change the value to 0. If it doesn't exist, add the line, set the value to 0, then reboot.
