Official HTC update on bootloader unlock 7/10 - HTC Sensation

**UPDATE 7/10**
We wanted to provide an update on HTC’s progress with bringing bootloader unlocking to our newest phones. We know how excited some of you are for this capability, and we’ve put significant resources behind making this change as soon as possible. While we wish we could flip a simple switch and unlock all bootloaders across our device portfolio, this is actually a complex challenge that requires a new software build and extensive testing to deliver the best possible customer experience.
We’re thrilled to announce today that software updates to support bootloader unlocking will begin rolling out in August for the global HTC Sensation, followed by the HTC Sensation 4G on T-Mobile USA and the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint. We’re in the testing phase for the unlocking capability now, and we expect it to be fully operational by early September for devices that have received the software updates. We'll continue rolling out the unlocking capability over time to other devices as part of maintenance releases and new shipments.
HTC continues its commitment to unlocking bootloaders and supporting the developer community. Because of the importance of this community to us, please expect an update on this about every few weeks as we make progress toward launch. Thank you for your patience and continued support!

I don't know about you guys, but I'm disappointed at the fact that we have to wait so much for this to happen I hope the devs do it first
I've learned my lesson and will be getting the next Nexus. I miss ROM-flashing.

Juste see that via Twitter, good news

Good news..Can't wait to flash roms!

I am glad they have finally officially said something. All the immature posts flooding their Facebook wall annoy me. Although, they will probably still go on.

It's stupid to have to wait 2 months to make our phones really OURS. I'm disappointed about that.

Oh yeah, makes sense.

Technically speaking, wouldn't devs be able to take the first update unlocking the international phone and use it to attempt to unlock the branded versions before they get the official release?

Probably, probably not. I was looking yesterday at the Atrix forums, and i tihnk AT&T Atrix's could have their bootloaders unlocked, while Bell Atrix's couldn't. So we'll see when the time comes. :/

I should hope so, but who knows what wrenches HTC/Phone Providers might be able to throw into the mix.
I'm still more thrilled about a possible XDA unlock than by an HTC unlockm which could and in all likelihood will come with some sort of strings, warranty voiding ones, attached.

It's good to know that HTC isn't backing away from the promised unlocked bootloader. It's just a matter of time.

I would like to thank so many people for this:
I would like to thank my mom, dad, sister. Without you guys I wouldn't have the patience to go through with all of this.
I would also like to thank the big man: Carl!

Don't think so. Any kind of modification to the update package would break the attached signature.

Kinda disappointed for the long wait...

I really don't get some people. For weeks countless people have been whinging that HTC have not set a time frame for our bootlockers to be unlocked, now today HTC make an announcement setting a time frame and people still whinge.
We all bought the phone knowing that the bootlocker is locked with the understanding that in time it will be unlocked. Which is what HTC is doing. Personally I would rather wait until after extensive testing for the update to hopefully work correctly instead of a rushed update full of bugs.

I bought the phone knowing it was going to be unlocked one day. However, never owning an HTC device before, I quickly noticed how big of a drag Sense really was. The in store demos don't really work enough since it's not like you're going to login and customize everything. But once I had everything up and running I REALLY saw how much I prefered the stock experience. So I put the phone to it's side and kept the Nexus One as my daily driver.
However, with this announcement of unlocked bootloaders I will not return my phone like I previously thought.

[Q] How will HTC unlocking bootloaders affect our phones

Guys, I've read it about 50 times in the past 24 hrs - MAYBE HTC will re-consider their bootloader locking policy. My question is very simple - HOW WILL IT AFFECT PHONES THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN PURCHASED???? Will we get S-OFF too? How?
i don't think it will affect desire and incredible s, they are too old now and the main buying hype is already in the past
dunno if htc cares so much about them to unlock

Presumably HTC would have to release an OTA or RUU that upgrades the Sensation to support the sanctioned unlocking method.
If the AWS-band Sensation comes out as an open phone, it's high up on my "next device" list. That or the Nexus 3
More than likely the sensation and announced HTC phones will come with a locked bootloader, they will either make a patch or just not lock future devices. I really don't think they are going to do this so close to launch date..

For a June 8 launch, there's probably already 100K boxed and sitting in a warehouse somewhere. They'll have to address it with an update. They're not going to stop the sale date to make s/w changes that 90% of the people buying it don't care about.
And HTC just kept my business.

This announcement has obviuosly been SCRUBBED by HTC legal. They just created a ****ton of loopholes for themselves, and gave themselves a LOT more time. We need to realize that the way they worded this sets it up to where we'll have to accept OTAs BEFORE the whole 'unlocking capability' is updated.

I totally agree with the quoted post above. Their statement is pure Legalese. To me this just sets up the scenario where a portion of the globe is given first the ability to unlock the boatloader and then sometime later the ability to use the capability to unlock the boatloader. No real precise time frames for either one. HTC states that The US Senation 4g is to follow with no real time frame and then sometime perhaps in latter part of Sept the capability to use the unlock boatloader update. They also did not mention which year, I am betting on Dec 12 of 2011.

T-Mobile Sensation 4G ICS --RELEASED--

I was speaking with a HTC customer service today with a basic support issue and while i was on the phone with them i asked about android 4.0. I take most claims like this with a grain of salt but being that this is from HTC tech support I assume that it is a reliable source. According to HTC, the ICS update for the T-Mobile Sensation
4G was released to be pushed YESTERDAY with the initial push starting today through April 1st with a schedualed upgrade completion by the end of april. I know there are a lot of naah sayers that will want to attack this post because they believe that it will be summer time or never or after the release og the HTC One S and to counter those comments before they happen i want to say very blatantly "I DONT CARE".
Man I hope whoever told you that was not BSing you. That would be great cause I want to wait for the official update before I S-off, flash a custom recovery and then a custom ICS ROM to my current Sensation.
I believe you,but what they said about it being pushed yesterday.... Does that mean it should be showing at any time today or tommrow?

Well to be honest it does make a difference, the difference being that I want to wait for the OTA. I have that right right you know. Not to mention I rather like the Visual Voice Mail app.
Don't get me wrong I tried several of the very first alpha and Beta ICS ROMs on my original Sensation. It was S-off and Super CID with a custom boot animation that I had made for myself. But it crapped out on me with total shutdown, it would not charge or turn on. And it did this very suddenly. So I had to get a replacement from T-Mobile and I want to keep this one stock until I get to try out the Official OTA for the T-Mobile HTC Sensation 4G. I am doing this just in case I want to request another replacement for any reason, oh and did I mention my replacement had bad dust under the screen so I am really considering replacing it anyway. That is another difference it makes. So as you can see you did not know all the variables and really should not have said something so arrogant. And it does make a difference.
Last night around 10:00 pm T-mobile sent a text and it said OTA UP three times, so I believe something is up......
Last nite I did the *#*#checkin#*#* thing and it came back with updates for almost all of The tmobile branded preinstalled apps.

A little late to the party I see.
HTC Sensation 4G w/ Beats Audio
Doubt it
On their Facebook page the last couple days T-Mobile has been responding to inquiries about ICS on the Sensation with variations on the following theme "we are currently testing ICS on the Sensation but it isn't the experience we are looking for so HTC is working on our feedback before we send it out and we don't have a time yet. " Doesn't sound like it will be out anytime in the next few weeks. It sounds like T-Mobile and HTC will end up pointing fingers at each other leaving us waiting till at least the second half of the year for our ICS.

[Warning] OTA Rumor/RUU download

This is a prewarning for anyone still nieve enough to accept an ota before its been torn down and examined. The One X, brother device(EVO 4g LTE) recently received an ota that SIGNIFICANTLY improved security on the device. Changes included a new hboot(as seen in the new hox ruu leaked) along with other patches, any EVO that was not previously s OFF can no longer use the s OFF exploit, lazypanda. On top of that, EVO and hox were both able to flash radios and kernals with the unlocked bootloader. The EVO, s on with unlocked bootloader can NO LONGER flash radios or kernals. Recoveries only. I am posting this to make the community aware that this update WILL most likely implement the same security changes that were put on EVO LTE owners.
If you accept the ota, you will likely:
Lose ability to flash kernals, and radios
Lose ability to use a s OFF exploit if it becomes available on the current(non updated) hboot.
Do thank the person bringing the ruu leak to xda for developers to examine and warning us of the soon to come ota. If it weren't for him, it would just show on our devices and a good percentage would accept, clogging our forums with help me threads. Check out the ruu leak thread to thank.

Not talking about devs, who contribute something to the overall environment (I would never refer to devs as "clowns"). I'm talking about the people who start fooling around with their phones without knowing what they're doing, brick them, then post things like "Will AT&T know what I did if I return this for a warranty replacement?"
And, whether the carriers can afford it (they can) isn't the point. It's that these folks motivate the carriers to make their phones ever more locked down in order to avoid having to deal with these bogus exchanges.
Wait, you got that wrong, reason we are getting more bricked phones is because the security on this device is NEW. Can't figure it out if you don't try, trying consists of trial and error. Well you know the sweetest of the story....

For every guy that takes a risk and flashes something that might achieve s off, 10 people have returned their phone because the email doesn't work, or the screen is too yellow, or its too quiet.. or loud. Do you see what I'm sayin?
Normal people don't root.. they just complain. So HTC locking down the phone more isn't preventative measures for tech support or return rates... Its just HTC being sloppy. Next it'll be that source is being delayed because they don't want people to brick their phones lol

Thanks, good looking out. Some people will heed your warnings, others wont. I'm afraid this would be a little harder to overcome than the 1.85 fiasco when everyone updated before there was a root exploit. If HTC is playing with the security like this then that is a little scary to me. Damn i wish i had a little birdy at HTC. Maybe samsung is the future for rooted devices. Maybe google will open Motorola up. HTC is goin backwards

Yeah, it's definitely a concern to me. I wish they would understand and just make it easy to do. The unlock site.could have an optional S-off to go with it. I would think it would be pretty easy for these guys to design a device to be very dev friendly, and also easy to recover if/when things go bad.

No problems guys. I got my S3 today so I haven't been testing the new RUU very much as I installed it sometime last night.
I'm torn on which phone I want to keep. Does someone really need two 700 Dollar phones?
