Sounds good to me! HTC now could be held accountable with a time frame, none of this future update open time frame BS

In August..That will be nice..So the confirmed date has been released..We can get our best sensation after htc unlock it!

not holding my breath, especially for TMO units (friggin carriers >:/)...
teamw1n is still my definitive source for full root and S-OFF, i hope this news wont slow/cancel fre3dom dev

what about desire hd

Will carrier firmware mean that I can't get the upgrade to unlocked bootloader firmware or will I be able to force an update via some application on the PC?

Good to see they kept their promise. Now if the Htc Sensation gets Cyanogenmod then I may just buy one but at the moment the dirty old o2x may be my new phone this year.

great news !!!!!

Nice im just glad mine is unbranded and i dont have to wait for carriers as well.

htc did the right thing by providing a unlocked bootloader.
this should be the way to go,supporting the dev community so that they can adopt good ideas into their products.
i cannot say the same for dell though...

We'll continue rolling out the unlocking capability over time to other devices as part of maintenance releases and new shipments.

This announcement has obviuosly been SCRUBBED by HTC legal. They just created a ****ton of loopholes for themselves, and gave themselves a LOT more time. We need to realize that the way they worded this sets it up to where we'll have to accept OTAs BEFORE the whole 'unlocking capability' is updated.
Not thrilled.

This is fantastic news. Got an unbranded S4G last week (first Android phone) after waiting 6 weeks to upgrade and now I can look forward to learning about kernals and the rest (i hope lol). Not sure i can do that seeing as I'm merely a noob, but i'll give it a try Cheers HTC and, more importantly, XDA-Devs!!

I totally agree with the quoted post above. Their statement is pure Legalese. To me this just sets up the scenario where a portion of the globe is given first the ability to unlock the boatloader and then sometime later the ability to use the capability to unlock the boatloader. No real precise time frames for either one. HTC states that The US Senation 4g is to follow with no real time frame and then sometime perhaps in latter part of Sept the capability to use the unlock boatloader update. They also did not mention which year, I am betting on Dec 12 of 2011.

[Q] How will HTC unlocking bootloaders affect our phones

Guys, I've read it about 50 times in the past 24 hrs - MAYBE HTC will re-consider their bootloader locking policy. My question is very simple - HOW WILL IT AFFECT PHONES THAT HAVE ALREADY BEEN PURCHASED???? Will we get S-OFF too? How?
i don't think it will affect desire and incredible s, they are too old now and the main buying hype is already in the past
dunno if htc cares so much about them to unlock

Presumably HTC would have to release an OTA or RUU that upgrades the Sensation to support the sanctioned unlocking method.
If the AWS-band Sensation comes out as an open phone, it's high up on my "next device" list. That or the Nexus 3
More than likely the sensation and announced HTC phones will come with a locked bootloader, they will either make a patch or just not lock future devices. I really don't think they are going to do this so close to launch date..

For a June 8 launch, there's probably already 100K boxed and sitting in a warehouse somewhere. They'll have to address it with an update. They're not going to stop the sale date to make s/w changes that 90% of the people buying it don't care about.

Official HTC update on bootloader unlock 7/10

**UPDATE 7/10**
We wanted to provide an update on HTC’s progress with bringing bootloader unlocking to our newest phones. We know how excited some of you are for this capability, and we’ve put significant resources behind making this change as soon as possible. While we wish we could flip a simple switch and unlock all bootloaders across our device portfolio, this is actually a complex challenge that requires a new software build and extensive testing to deliver the best possible customer experience.
We’re thrilled to announce today that software updates to support bootloader unlocking will begin rolling out in August for the global HTC Sensation, followed by the HTC Sensation 4G on T-Mobile USA and the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint. We’re in the testing phase for the unlocking capability now, and we expect it to be fully operational by early September for devices that have received the software updates. We'll continue rolling out the unlocking capability over time to other devices as part of maintenance releases and new shipments.
HTC continues its commitment to unlocking bootloaders and supporting the developer community. Because of the importance of this community to us, please expect an update on this about every few weeks as we make progress toward launch. Thank you for your patience and continued support!

I'm still more thrilled about a possible XDA unlock than by an HTC unlockm which could and in all likelihood will come with some sort of strings, warranty voiding ones, attached.

I really don't get some people. For weeks countless people have been whinging that HTC have not set a time frame for our bootlockers to be unlocked, now today HTC make an announcement setting a time frame and people still whinge.
We all bought the phone knowing that the bootlocker is locked with the understanding that in time it will be unlocked. Which is what HTC is doing. Personally I would rather wait until after extensive testing for the update to hopefully work correctly instead of a rushed update full of bugs.

I bought the phone knowing it was going to be unlocked one day. However, never owning an HTC device before, I quickly noticed how big of a drag Sense really was. The in store demos don't really work enough since it's not like you're going to login and customize everything. But once I had everything up and running I REALLY saw how much I prefered the stock experience. So I put the phone to it's side and kept the Nexus One as my daily driver.
However, with this announcement of unlocked bootloaders I will not return my phone like I previously thought.

My problems must have been user error, the power button was sticking and it was recessed into the phone, another one had a messed up audio jack, the next had the same issue and this one has the audio jack issue as well just not as bad and this new one also has random reboots even on the new OTA GB radio, the last three only had reboots on froyo radios.

They'll unlock the bootloader to the evo 3d and sensation but not the tbolt. Their unlocking tool will require you to provide them with your device information to void your warranty. Only good I see is developers might be able to use the tool to unlock other devices like the tbolt and future devices without having to provide htc with any of your phones information.

On top of that from what I have been reading it is somewhat limiting when compared to s-off. No hboot, radio, or splash1 flashing. Last I heard kernels had to be fastbooted on. There is probably more I don't know about. Voids your warranty and you can't even switch around to find what radio works best for you. Unlocked my a$$!!

[ATTN] AT&T Rep Training for checking one bootloader

First, I wasn't able to take a photo. A friend of mine is a store manager for a nearby AT&T store. I picked him coffee since I was in the area near his store. We went back in his office to chill, but one of his Sales Reps, was doing a training on how to check to see if the HTC One X bootloader was locked or unlocked for warranty/in store exchanges.
From when I used to work at AT&T, we'd do a training about 2 weeks before device came out or there was a change being made to policy or intelus.
According to my friend, the reps and himself think that AT&T will be allowing the bootloader to be unlocked through HTC DEV by the end of the month following a OTA software update.
I personally am staking like 50/50 on this because it could mean AT&T knows the devs here on XDA will unlock the bootloader, or AT&T is allowing HTC DEV to allow the unlock.
Just doing an PSA.

Do they do that so they don't have to deal with free warranty service? Thinking about it, they only going to benefit from users being able unlock their devices and void their warranty...
Next step for them would be void warranty for rooting and after that void for removing bloat.

but i'll be happy if true =)

Could be, but I wouldn't think so, unless my friend is pulling my leg. But, I will be posting the training document tomorrow afternoon to evening. I wasn't able to take a photo of the screen due to the RSC closing the training program but I was able to read the first few lines it did state checking for unlocked bootloader.
If I'm wrong I'm wrong, I'll gladly take the brutal beating you all believe ill deserve if I'm wrong.
Though I will saay, at my friends store they have a machine, not the one for transferring numbers and such from one to device to another. It works by running the stock firmware side by side with the phone. It did show my phone status as red. I am rooted. I don't exactly know how it works but now I know why they take my phone to the back when I say I have an issue.

I hope the kernel source drops around the same time.
Wishful thinking.

I checked your pro, I'm also in the bay. Now I'm wondering if it's because his store returns exchanges for any reason.
Thought his asm is really anal and will compare and spend 15 minutes staring at it.
