[Q] SD CARD - General Questions and Answers

Saw a RiDATA 16GB MicroSD but am skeptical to buy(havent used brand) im deciding over either this one or AData 16GB MicroSD Card they are both class 6
Which is more durable/reliable and better performing?

i don't think there is a big diference. It dependes on the use.

im gonna use it for rooting, etc. everyday/heavy kind of use;i dont want it to go corrupt or data gone missing or any breakdowns you know

One 16GB or Two 8GB?

Wondering if anyone can give their opinions on the conveniences of owning either a single 16gb card or two 8gb cards.
I definitely need more than 4gb especially because of the music I want on the card. I'm thinking maybe an 8 will be good enough for the music/pictures/data...and I'll have another 8 for movies that my kids can watch while waiting at a restaurant or where ever.
I guess I'm thinking this way because if one of the 8gb cards gets corrupt then I'll have a spare...plus buying two 8gb cards is cheaper than getting one 16gb.
On the other hand...I want a 16gb because of the convenience factor. But then...if that card goes bad...I'm back to my 4gb until I can get a replacement.
Can someone make this decision easier for me! LoL! Pro/Cons please. Thanks!
My vote would be for the 1 16Gb card just for the simple fact that its a PITA to swap the cards on the N1. If they made a side loading slot, then I would vote for the 2, but since you gotta shut it off and take the battery out, I would just get the 1. Instead of waiting until it dies, you could always get a 2nd 16Gb card, or get an 8Gb as a backup when you can afford it.
I've been using these cards in many different devices over the past few years and I haven't had one go bad on me yet, so I'm not sure what the typical lifespan is.
Thanks for your insight on this matter...
I would suggest the 16gb card. Stick it in there and forget about it!

You're right - that does suck, and that's why I went with a 16.
Class 4 or 6? Unless I'm benchmarking...I shouldn't be able to notice a difference, right?
Go with just 1x 16gb

I doubt you'll notice that much of a difference. I thought I'd also throw in my two cents and recommend getting a single 16gb card, because if you have other data that your phone has saved to it... pictures, ebooks, etc. Swapping out the cards means you wont have access to all that data. Me personally, I'm waiting for the 32gb to drop in price a bit

Even a class 2 should be fine. The read speeds will still be good. Just slower write speeds I believe.
So it might take longer to put your music, videos on the card but playback will be the same.
Unless you plan on using App2SD then maybe a higher class might be needed?
I'm waiting for the 32gb to drop in price!
dont expect those 32gb cards to drop in price anytime soon,....i ordered my 16gb as soon as i saw the price on a 32gb card...twice to storage at more than 3 times the cost of a 16gb card...not worth it unless you really have a "need" for that much storage on your phone....imho
Awesome....thanks for your feedback guys...I've definitely decided on a single 16GB card. Now...I doubt that i'll do any app2sd. I only have a handful of apps on my phone...and really don't need much more. I think the internal memory is plenty for me.
So, (holding my breath)...do I go for the class 2 card or the class 6? - Damn...wish I was rich enough to not even care how much I'll be saving! LoL!
Bit the bullet...and got a 16GB class 6 - A-Data brand.

32 GB MicroSD

I am trying to find a 32GB MicroSD card preferably class 6. The only one I have been able to find is class 2 and it's available from Buy.com. I've tried Google, Frys.com, New Egg, etc. Anybody know where I can get one?
Like to have it in hand when I get my Evo in 2 weeks.
Don't know if 32GB class 6 Micro SDHC cards are out there yet. I have a 16GB class 2 Kingston and it out performed my 8GB class 6 Transcend when I did speed tests on it.

the card on best.com is 350...its better off buying a 32gb iphone
Only Class 2 cards are in production at the present time.
I doubt Buy.com or anywhere other than Sandisk has them actually in stock to sell right now, Sandisk haven't even been able to keep up with their own orders.
I wouldn't worry about it being Class 2 too much to be honest, it doesn't really make a difference for in-phone use, only transfer speeds when loading information to the card. I have one in my Desire, works great (also works in my HD2 and X10).
I bought a "ebay rip off" that actually ended up being 31.2GB AFTER the format. It also says class 6, but I haven't tested that yet. I got the card for a whopping $18.88 with free shipping

try putting 30 gb of stuff and see if it runs
Card ran Just fine on the computer! I haven't MAXED the card because I don't have 31.2GBs of stuff to put on it. I did put 10.5GB on it.
EDIT: I have not tested the card on the phone, it seems I have some files on the card from my HD2 phone that were blocking my EVO's access to the card, but I will surely solve this problem. It did read putting on a few folders, maybe 200MB of stuff. The SD & Phone storage setting showed loss of the memory, it also showed 31.2GB of space left when I inserted the card with nothing on it.
You really ought to test it out. Most of the "bogus" cards show up as the correct amount, but typically they take a smaller card (2,4,8, or 16GB assuming), and hack it to look like 32. It'll work great until you try to write more information to it than the card actually holds (so 2,4,8, or 16GB's). If your card holds more than 16GB's, you are golden.

which microsd card

Going to buy the DHD on monday and i read about troubles with the "slow" class 2 microsd card which comes with the DHD (like 720p recording isnt smooth enough).. should i get a 16gb class 6 sd card? or is class 4 enough? or is even the 8gb class 2 which comes with the DHD fast enough?
Thought about a Transcend 16gb class 6 (but its pretty expensive.. 56€ = ~65$ i think).. so maybe a cheaper (class 4 or class 2) is enough?
thanks

I have had no problems with the card provided. I find it hard to belive htc would supply a sd card that is not capable of using all features of the device. I am sure someone disagrees, your best bet is to stick with the one provided. If you do have any problems with the class 2, you can always try a class 4.
Try eBay, here are 2 good (and free shipping) deals I took. Still waiting on delivery, but you can't really beat the price.
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280603123927 <-- 32GB (at least class 4/6) (ebay removed item, possibly fake, awaiting 'shipment', card arrived, working 100%, not fake )
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260710352568 <-- 8GB class 10
If anyone buys a higher class SDCard could you provide a mini review. I'm in the market for a well priced, but balanced with performance SDCard.
Reading manufacturer reviews is pointless, and inexperienced users are the same.
Anyone who can recommend a good/great SDCard will get my thanks, and maybe a thank-you donation.
I will let you know as soon as I get them
Please do, I much prefer a good user review to a standard "It works" review. Many thanks & Merry Xmas
My DHD came with an 8 GB class 4 Sandisk, so don't know if the included card varies, depending on where you buy it? Since you're talking about class 2 and all.
Anyway, I bought a 16 GB class 4 Kingston, the worst piece of crap I've ever had, corrupted data and apps on sd constantly and slow transfer speeds via USB. Don't know if that's just the way that card works with the phone, or if I got one from a bad batch. But anyway, now I'm waiting for a replacement Sandisk 16 GB class 2, hoping it'll do a better job.
if we buy another sd card apart from the stock sd do we need to copy paste some folders which are spesific for some apps or the apps will recreate them in the new sd?
The one included with mine is only a class 2. (cant remember name now, sorry)

Copy the contents of the old sdcard to a folder on your pc. Then copy that to the new sdcard after formatting it. Just did this last night when I put in my new (Xmas pressie!!) 32GB card. I formatted the card first in the phone.
HTH.

Thanks a lot Dave, so soft copy/paste for files & folders is enough for new SD card transition.
Good to know that. BTW Which SD card is your 32 GB, did you notice any speed improvements with your new SD?

It was for me. I actually formatted the card in my old Nokia E71, plugged the E71 into my PC and mounted the card. Then 'copy n pasted' the files over. Seems a weird way to do it but a) my SD to microsd adaptor card is b&ggered so had to use the (a) phone and b) I only have USB2 connectivity on my PC so copying the c. 25GB of music etc I have took several hours. Tying up the old phone was preferable to tying up my current DHD.
One thing though. I'd read that the best way to format an SD card was using 'sdformatter' from http://www.sdcard.org/consumers/formatter/ .... which sounded like a good plan. However the formatted card couldn't be read on XP Pro SP3 PC. Hence why I formatted it on the Nokia. That worked a treat.

I got this one ... http://www.mymemory.co.uk/Micro-SDHC/MyMemory/MyMemory-32GB-Micro-SD-(SDHC)-Card---Class-4 .... Not noticed any speed improvements, though probably as I haven't used it much yet. To be honest the reason I got it was mainly to hold all my music so getting rid of an MP3 player. Any sd card is fast enough for that. I haven't checked out the exact feeds and speeds but I'm suspecting that any card is also fast enough for video/still shots as I haven't noticed any problem yet!
Cheers
Dave
I got the 8GB class 10 one (around $20 inc shipping, got here in less than 2 weeks), quick test show read speed to be 17.4MB/sec (looking for a decent app to measure write speed, preferably non destructive unlike the way HD Speed does)
As for the 32GB one. Think it was a scam, ebay removed page. Gonna wait a little, as it did have a shipping number before all the details disappeared, if it does not arrive, I will contest the $14 I paid for it.
Update: The 32GB one, not a scam, just arrived. Sandisk 32GB class 4, tested, all working What a bargain!

do I have a bad SD card?

Just got a 32 GB Sandisk SD card for my tablet. So far have about 5 gigs of stuff on it, but every time I try to put more, it comes out all garbled and I have to disk repair it in order for it to work again. I have heard of counterfeit cards which claim they are larger than they really are. Both the tablet and PC say there are 32 GB on the card. Is the card bad, is it fake, or am I doing something wrong?
Probably fake. Where did you buy it from and how much did you pay?

which SD card to get?

ordered the sensation today and wanna ask first how is the card that comes with the device? are people using it or most of you bought a new one?
2nd, which card would you recommend?
It's not a bad card, 8gb class 4 so it's fast enough for most everything. What is too bad is that the phones doesn't have more built in memory. I can fill 8gb fast so for me, a 16 GB card is minimum and the higher the class the better imho.
There are a lot of cards out there, I would recommend a name brand unit and at least class 6. I've got a 32gb class 10 from newegg and it works great (cant find link right now).

good enough? or too much?
That's a link to the seller's feedback so I don't know what item you were looking at. Feedback seems good though.
A Data 32GB here.

You need a micro sd. That link is the wrong one.
ok i give up.. can anyone recommend me on a good and not expensive 16gb card?
I brought a 16gig pny card, its been very good so far.
Newegg has the ADATA 16GB Class 10 card for $25 right now. I bought it for $35 when I got my phone last month & I thought even that price was worth it
Try not to buy anything that are related to storage on ebay or online in general, e.g. microsd card, external harddrive, usb stick...they tend to be always fake. Best to go to local stores with good reputation for these things.
I bought a Lexar 32GB class 10 microSDHC card.
17 MB/sec read
8 MB/sec write
this was using SD tool for android.
I am hoping that once S-OFF is achieved, and we get cyanogen running on this device, the speeds will improve. The card cost me about $90 shipped, and came with a USB to microSDHC adapter. At this point I am very disapointed in the card's performance. Even when using my computer to transfer the data to it, the best I got was about 8 MB/sec write.
Also after a full format on Windows 7, the card only shows 29.8 GB capacity
though the detailed figure was 32,005,685,248 Bytes
I am hoping this card is not a fake. Can anyone else confirm their benchmarks with a 32 GB lexar class 10?
locate a Lexar 16gb class 6 from a reputable dealer.
can be had for around $20.
I get around 7-9mb write and around 17-20mb read speed.
seems like about the same speed as the class 10 Lexar above.
32gb version is too expensive still. don't understand why they cost almost 5 times more when the capacity is only double.

Your capacity is correct. The difference is due to the fact that a properly calculated byte, kilobyte, megabyte, gigabyte, or terabyte is calculated in base-2. The manufacturers have long been in the habit of calculating in base-10, hence the difference in what's claimed and what you actually see.

I think it might be a bit much to imply that any online vendor should be avoided when purchasing flash memory. As long as it's from a reputable vendor (not a ebay seller or amazon seller), you should be OK and in the event that you end up with a fake you would be protected by the vendor's return policy.

Like white i purchased a lexar 32gb class 10 card. Although transferring to the card was slower than claimed from my hard drive but transferring from my old micro sd to the new one i recieved much higher speeds with a class 6 limit due to the old card. As for onlkne vendors i have purchased all my external/internal and sd cards from ebay. I have had 1 problem but that was my fault because the offered price was too good to be true

hmm i read an article on the main xda page about microsd cards.. it says the sandisk one has better i/o and random reads and writes.. so now im really lost..well in the end.. u still cant transfer more than 4gb file onto your microsd card.

why cant you transfer more than 4gb file onto the card?
sorry for not being specific. You cant transfer more than a 4gb file because that's the limit for a fat32 microsd.... i believe.. lol
Yep, fat32 has a file size limit of 4Gb.
now i doubt there will be any difference between sd cards. We need a2sd or d2sd in order to evaluate better. On the HD2 there was a major difference between class 2 and a class 6 card. On the sensation i have tried class 2 and class 6 the performance seems the same.
