Hi all
I have a galaxy Tab and Nexus S ..when Nexus S is faster the bowser isnt impressive on both devices..
I yesterdfay installed OVERCOME rom on my Galaxy Tab and..browser is even smoother than IPAD..i mean really really buttery smooth i will try to upload a video..Can any one using Overcome rom confirm me the changes made so that we can have same quality of browser on Nexus S because GOOGLE so far is behaving like a **** to us..
Its a reall wonderful i checked now on galaxy Tab.Specs are same for Nexus S.Please i need positive replies..currently there is no rom which makes browser buttery smooth...Let me tell you Opera is very smooth but in case of OVERCOME rom now stock browser is matchless fastest and smoothest browser i have seen in life...much smooth what apple can offer thats a fact even with FLASh on
Opera is smooth but the interface is not user friendly. It would be great if xda developers can mod nexus s browser
Sent from my NOOB Nexus S with the poor english by using XDA Premium App
opera is s smooth bro but The browser mod i talked about is much buttery than opera...is their anyone from Google team on this thread...such a expensive phone with a pathetic browser...
Can anyone confirm a ROM which includes galaxy S JPu browser...It was a great browser
Let me verify that FLASH is not responsible for LAG...i confirmed this s from my experience of android phones till date.
This is not connected with Flash performance. Problem occurs on many browsers not only stock browser. Only ones that work fine is Opera or firefox (but slower).
O think this is a driver problem - same lag exists in Waze app (free gps application) while not occuring on for example DHD.
cant they make drivers for their flagship device..thats certainly unbelivable

Yeah, the situation is extremely frustrating. I probably would return my Nexus if it was possible at this point. The browser issue can be fixed by using opera (which is everything except perfect), but there are a lot of other ui elements that suffer from this too.
Can't believe nexus has had this good reviews as it has. Also, I can't believe Google's attitude towards this problem, perhaps they can fix it with ice-cream sandwich, but that ain't coming until Q4, a year after the phone's launch.
I find it quite interesting that other android phones, phones with skins, don't suffer the lag issue - or nearly to the extent the nexus suffers. God, it simply isn't acceptable to wait until November-September time frame... iPhone may be limited to the extreme, but at least it works. I loved my Desire from the beginning, should have not sold it.
Please, star the bug report from the link.
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...c=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars&id=13404
There is yet another bug report for the whole UI.
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...pu&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
And also a bug report concerning hw-acceleration, marked as solved, but it still has a lot of new reports.
http://code.google.com/p/android/is...rs&colspec=ID Type Status Owner Summary Stars
I, personally, and probably many others, would appreciate if users that experience (all?) there problems would star these as issues, or at least the first one.
gee i thought i was the only one who noticed this lag
i come from an iphone, so i know what "buttery smooth" means... the nexus s is NOT "buttery smooth"
the stock browser SUCKS.. can't handle images very well (try scrolling up and down http://www.anandtech.com/ you'll see what i mean)
i use opera because it's the smoothest browser out there... i've tried firefox and stock browser wrappers like dolphin, miren, etc but they all lag in comparison... i use opera with the stock browser's user agent because web developers don't care about opera (browse the internet with stock opera settings and u'll see what i mean)

What I think is interesting is how many people on the forums who say they love this phone because it is "PURE GOOGLE!" as if they did not realize that the issues are not getting fixed in a timely manner. (radio issues, battery issues, browser lag, etc.)
I'm using opera as well. The stock browser is a pile of garbage when there's more than a few images. It's pretty sad.

The browser is usually pretty fast after a fresh reboot. Give it a couple of days without a reboot and the browser slows down quite a bit even with cm 7.1 nightly and trinity kernel.
That being said, cm 7.1 does have some performance mods that make it faster than stock.
So is the browser laggy or websites not configured right for mobile view
Happens on my tablet some sites are great and some not so good

I've read in many places that Samsung put hardware acceleration in their browser on their phones.
If that's true, why is browsing so unbelievably jerky? I'm running the latest Firefly ROM, FYI. My co-worker was showing me his iPhone 4 and its browsing experience, and it just completely demolished my Captivate.
Well maybe the site you were on had flash stuff on it. That will slow down the browser regardless of whether or not it has been hardware accelerated.
I haven't seen any big lags on the captivate i'm using right now, even with flash. Even with my HD2, browsing isn't laggy.
The test site we were using was Engadget, the desktop version (not the mobile version). So I guess mine was much more choppier because it had Flash going on, while the iPhone did not?

Nope. Turned off Flash as well as disabling Javascript, same old. Jerky and very unsmooth. Not to mention it checkerboards.
You should see how fast the browser is in the leaked 2.3 rom that popped up two weeks ago. The speed difference between the 2.2 and leaked 2.3 browser is VERY noticeable and makes the 2.2 browser look like the alpha leak.

there is no gurantee that hardware accellerated browsing made it through the rom cutting process, there are many things removed as "bloat ware" that arent bad or carrier applied, also you mentioned with "their browser" does your rom use "their browser"?
"hardware accelerated" doesnt mean "will just work".

I have no idea if Firefly uses the Samsung browser. I'll ask in the ROM thread. Still, it's pretty pathetic the difference between the iPhone user experience and the Android user experience.
my browsing is great, even on flash video sites like watch.thecomedynetwork.ca (canada only). everything loads quick and plays nicely, with default browser and dolphin browser.
its possible your phone doesnt like the modem your rom uses. try a new modem.
its kind of unfair to flash custom software and say the "phone" is worse than another, you arent comparing to stock approved software for your phone and location.
its like saying your computer sucks because it got a virus..

I tried multiple modems. First one was JL2, I'm on JK4 now. I don't see how a modem would equate to displaying a webpage. Loading, yes, but displaying, how?
I'm running a custom ROM to give this phone a fair chance. Running the complete garbage that is stock ROM on this phone is laughable at best.
if your browser is checkerboarding you must be on the stock 2.2.1 browser that is horrible. find the 2.2.1 browser thread and i have a .zip in there will fix checkerboarding and somewhat the gif issue also.
and even if the iphone browser is a little smoother(which i didnt notice a big difference in my iphone 4 and captivate), the 2.2(and 2.1 for that matter) browser loads pages significantly faster. mine did every page every time. the iphones browser also seems smoother when zooming because it does not reflow text AT ALL. our phones do. ill take the text reflowing any day.
are you using any task managers or antivirus programs? anything that may be running in the background on boot and/or scanning what you are doing/veiwing?

No, I use none of them. I'm aware that Froyo negates the need for any type of task manager/task killers. No anti-virus either (unnecessary).
All I'm doing is opening the browser and viewing a page like Engadget. The scrolling/pinch to zoom is very jerky and is not fluid at all.
Just to add what the OP is saying, I am on Cognition 3.04 and I notice the browser is jerky when scrolling and just generally laggy when scrolling or re-sizing. I would say worse than stock in terms of the experience on the page, not talking about load times.
Running Cognition 4.1.1 here and it seems good to me. Maybe a little jerky on scrolling but nothing serious. Pinch zoom is smooth.
I feel like my user experience got worse after the upgrade from 2.1 stock to 2.2 stock. I have plug-ins set to on demand.
as above,
is it me or everyone that the web browser in Nexus S really loads page at a very slow rate compared to iphones?
im saying this because during rides in underground trains, all the iphones and ipads around me seem to load pages without any hiccup, yet i have problem loading even the google page.
Even when placed side by side, loading times are inferior compared to the iphone safari.
PS: im not creating an iphone vs nexus thread, just asking out of curiosity
On paper, the android browser is faster then iOS', but the nexus s doesn't have video acceleration, so loading flash content or images is pathetically slow and laggy, which is very disappointing for a pure google experience phone, they really screwed this up.
Custom UIs like touchwiz and htc sense do have hardware acceleration, so the browser is blazing fast (really, really fast and definitely out stands the iphone, that's the only thing I miss from my old HTC Desire), but the vanilla android doesn't, at least until ice cream sandwich comes out.
This, or your phone probably had poor coverage in that area. Anyhow, yes, the nexus s browsing experience is lame and google should be ashamed with their device.
Edit: As an alternative, you can use opera mobile (not mini) which is very responsive and smooth, but it tends to render the pages after they are fully loaded, not on the go, so it may seem slower then the stock browser, much slower. On wifi it runs well tho.
Eh you get me wrong, I mean that it slow on loading page not when surfing the page ...

I had this problem too. Not only slow loading pages. Sometimes it not load at all. I had to touch and hold and choose open to load the page.
Its because the kernel combined with unsuitable ROM. After I flashed another rom and kernel. I solved this problem.

No one can really tell you which is best, as it's all relative. They are both good so try them both out and decide what works best for you. I, personally, don't like these "which one is best" threads as it can be demeaning to the devs. They all work hard and they all deserve equal respect. You can't possibly know which one you like better unless you try them both/all

HellFire ICS 4.0.3
BIG THANKS to everyone who is involved from the USB drivers to the ROOTers to the ROM kings.
Downloaded this ROM and after several hours for the FIRST TIME EVER, rooted my G2X, installed CWM, installed this ROM and the GAPPS. Sweet, no I feel so much LESS amateurish.
First BOOT didn't take as long as I thought it would. SHUTDOWN and STARTUP (POWER-UP) are WAY faster than they were on 2.3.3.
Below are OBSERVATIONS not complaints:
I am not a developer, just a user. The interface is really cool (for lack of more technical terms). Video playback is REALLY CHOPPY when it was smooth on 2.3.3. and many of the videos won't even play. The other DOWNSIDE is my BATTERY is DEAD as HELL, been charging for 2 hours already and still only at 80%, with 2.3.3 the battery (which is extended life) would last for a day and a half.
I am in the process of downloading the EAGLES BLOOD version to make my own comparisons. From what I am reading both these ROMs need work BUT I don't know anything about that.
WHAT IS REALLY COOL is that LG doesn't even have ICS in the pipe for G2X yet and now it's on my phone - SWEET.
I so look forward to future updates and ROMs to keep us less talented in the GAME. Thanks again, Mark
AND Now I have SuperUser rights - don't know what that means yet either but I will try to learn!

You'll find them to be pretty similar. Video playback is a known issue for all ICS roms and will likely persist as an issue for a long time (quite possibly until we have a release/source from T-Mobile/LG). Also, you'll notice that some apps don't work too well yet (basically same issue as video playback).
Outside of that, the share the same source, but HFS v1.2 was build more recently, and therefor has the newest commits from Arcee. This includes things like setting data limits and switching storage between internal and external SD. Hell also baked in a facebook sync patch that may or may not be working for people (I haven't tried it, but heard some people had problems).
Further outside of that, each developer has added their own style to the rom. I believe, however, that Eaglesblood isn't due to get the majority of the customization that the other EB roms enjoy until the next release.
Hope that helps.

I've been using it for a few days and seems very stable no FC yet but I would a reboot at least once a day.
I've been debating on which ICS rom to go with (still on CM7 now)
Probably go with Hellfire because they are on the cusp of a new release, and it's apparently very good.
Luvin the EB ICS
Been using the eb ics for two days now. It doesn't seem to consume as much battery as my previous rom (GB Weapon G2x) and that was a really good rom. Had to change to ics because i seemed to be having reboot issues and I longed for ics.
So far been having a few force closes but am still breaking it in. Seem to be having battery calibration problems as well, but i will give it time. I would say try them all. Max respect to the devs.
I had EB and the 'Music' kept stopping. I installed HF and have not had 1 error.
Well first off, ICS ROMs for this phone are not finished yet and will give you many stability issues and compatibility issues. That being said, you won't know which one you like more unless you try out both of them for yourself.

Been using Hellfire Sandwich since release. Here is my run down of what I see.
-Speed is good.
-Memory management works well but will cause FC because of more running processes then allowed.
-Paired with setCPU profiles I get insane battery life.Better then GB.
-Browser issues with flickering when rotating between portrait and landscape. Dolphin will FC as well.
-Bluetooth will drop out sometimes. Unsure if this is the phone or my headset.
-Browser does have video playback issue. YouTube and Netflix app works fine.
-No Widgets? Or I'm doing it wrong.
-No issues with any of my usual apps.
All I can think of at the moment. I use my phone casually for games and browsing.

My Review
As a normal user I can say Hellfire ICS is much better then EB's. In the aspect of
Speed is way better.
Less Laggs while opening apps
Faster browsing then EB's
Stucking issue is less in Hellfire
In short Hellfire's ICS :good: is faster then EagleBlood's as per me... (a normal user not a dev)
Hi guys, there's a lot of 4.2 ROMs floating around the forum at the moment and I've tried them all. Unfortunately, I feel like I can never get the same level of buttery smoothness as I have in 4.1.2. Even the AOSP 4.2 ROM in the forum doesn't give me the same level of user experience as in the vanilla 4.1.2 AOSP ROM I'm using now. And I'm not talking about features or bugs, I'm talking about the overall experience of using it, like browsing, scrolling through lists like in Instagram or xda, dropped frames, etc.
Just to be clear, I'm not trolling. I just wanted to know if I'm really the only one who feels that unlike in previous versions, 4.2.1 is truly not made for the Nexus S. Let me know what you think below.

Can you site an example on how we can do that? I've tried all of the currently available 4.2 ROMs and they just feel clunky compared to 4.1.2. Even the recent apps list appear faster and with less stutter in 4.1.2.

Once we are done with solving all the bugs, we can work on patches to remove lags.
Probably because 4.2 is just a port.

4.2 is a port and way more than what Nexus S was designed to handle. Still, I found it really snappy and only sipping battery compared to 4.1 and even CM10. Only multitasking chokes it, but that can't be helped.

You are really unaware of what NS can handle.
My 2 years old LG Optimus One P500; an MDPI ARMv6 arch device which comes with froyo and can only be updated to GB runs on smooth JB.
NS is way far more capable than that and in the coming future we will prove that too. :victory:

I was happy with JellyShot 0.8 for couple days then with Vanilla 4.1.2 which I used since release, used the same kernel. I tried couple 4.2 for the NS, but everyone felt clunky until JellyShot, I also loved the quick toggles and MMS features.
But I feel you, since 4.1.1 Google images behaved very well and smoother then AOSP compiled stuff.

Unfortunately, I feel like I can never get the same level of buttery smoothness as I have in 4.1.2. Even the AOSP 4.2 ROM in the forum doesn't give me the same level of user experience as in the vanilla 4.1.2 AOSP ROM I'm using now.

Same here. I tried greenblue's AOSP 4.2.1 and like the "new features", but I always return back to the stock 4.1.2 ROM. It feels more robust somehow, even with the same kernel.
I´m running on Rasbeanjelly 4.2.1 since it comes out and i´m very satisified with it. I expected nothing more of the Nexus S but i love to hear that there will possibly be improvements in future.
For the last couple of days I've been flashing my device with various roms. 4.2.1. mostly. Everytime I flashed a new rom which was supposed to be smooth fast and super nice it turned out it was slow, sluggish, choppy and not working as a smartphone should. Crt animation is ****ty among every 4.2. Rom i tried. It's delayed, slow and not in the right pace. Lockscreen does not work properly. Scrolling through the lockscreen is laggy. Quick settings are sometimes laggy. I just hate to say it but I think 4.2.1. is really not meant for the nexus s. I just returned to vanilla rom with minimum modifications (flohimself rom) and I love what I see. Everything is fast, fluent and working properly

Yeah. Same experience here. I guess you can't just beat the experience in using actual AOSP ROMs with all sources and proprietary binaries available. Still, appreciate the efforts of all the devs who have been trying to keep our humble device in the cutting edge... even if said edge is a bit dull at the moment.
Still I want to remain optimistic that things will only get better in the future in terms of the 4.2 ROMs.
What do you guys think? Could we achieve the same level of user experience of a 100% AOSP ROM even without Google's support?

I think we can :victory:
I thought that everything is possible. But the more i use my phone the more I think that the stock firmware is simply the best for it. The more new features the faster your phone will become sluggish and unbearably slow. I've been on cm10 for a while and I thought it was fast. I was wrong. I'm now typing from a vanilla rom and that's the way it should be. I just wonder how long will my phone be so fast and snappy. Maybe after couple of days it will become as slow as the other roms leaving me with the opininion that android is simply crap? what do you think?
thanks to all dev for 4.2.1 rom !!!
You all should use a HTC Hero for a week and you'd realize that your phone runs great. If your phone runs so poorly on 4.0+ it's probably you because I see enough people say their phone flies. 4.2 is a bit clunky, but it's also a port. A port takes time to get the kinks out. I thought 4.2 actually ran fine. But I also had a click and wait hero and Windows Mobile phones before this. The lock screen is the main fail on it for a variety of reasons. Some apps are definitely not optimized for 4.2 as well. Beyond that it seems fine. It will get better. I've already had to suffer through this on so many phones, just be patient.

Unfortunately using actual AOSP ROMs will always be better, so everything based on 4.2 will always be less than 4.1.2. I am using the great 4.2.1 ROMs here and enjoying them but they are less than using actual AOSP ROMs.
A reality we have to accept since our beloved NS has been dropped by Google...

Oh don't get me wrong, I think my phone runs great, especially with the vanilla 4.1.2 AOSP ROM I'm running right now. This is also the reason why I believe my complaints with 4.2 ROMs are not because of "me", as you say. Because if I do cause the poor performance on my phone, I would experience the same issues regardless of what ROM I am using, which, as I mentioned before, is not the case. < via xda app>

I think that's why we're on a nexus device, to get the pure Google experience. The only thing the nexus s needs that's not stock it's backlight notifications, and the gnex solved it with the notification led. Let's just admit that this is an old phone, and the nexus 4 is probably where we should head towards. Probably won't find anything for such a great deal for a while. It'll last us as few years for sure.

It wasn't intended as a dig. There are several people though that report 4.2 running fine. This would tend to indicate that there would be something specific to what a user does that would cause the phone to run in a way that made it unbearable. Typically that will be related to some specific application(s) causing an issue due to not being updated. Most problems I saw with 4.2 were very similar to what I saw when we got ics before many apps ever updated and some never did and I'd imagine there are still people using apps that haven't been updated since gb. Definitely 4.2 is nowhere near perfect on our phones though and is running very much like a port and they clearly lagged some stuff up.

Google Chrome
I was just wondering and wanting to get a bit of an overview about Chrome on our device. At the moment I'm running a non-Sense ROM and in my experience so far Chrome really lacks speed and fluidness. It takes long to start it up, it's slow bringing up my keyboard and everything just doesn't feel snappy.
Question is, is it me, my phone, or is it slow in general on the HTC One S? How does it perform on your device? Please include what ROM you're using as well.
I would expect Chrome to run like sunshine, since it's Google's product. The stock browser seems a lot snappier, but it lacks the syncing with my Desktop Chrome.
