[Q] Are you satisfied with your Android 4.2 experience? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, there's a lot of 4.2 ROMs floating around the forum at the moment and I've tried them all. Unfortunately, I feel like I can never get the same level of buttery smoothness as I have in 4.1.2. Even the AOSP 4.2 ROM in the forum doesn't give me the same level of user experience as in the vanilla 4.1.2 AOSP ROM I'm using now. And I'm not talking about features or bugs, I'm talking about the overall experience of using it, like browsing, scrolling through lists like in Instagram or xda, dropped frames, etc.
Just to be clear, I'm not trolling. I just wanted to know if I'm really the only one who feels that unlike in previous versions, 4.2.1 is truly not made for the Nexus S. Let me know what you think below.
Cheers!

Somewhat I do agree BUT we can bring all that smoothness back pretty much easily

Can you site an example on how we can do that? I've tried all of the currently available 4.2 ROMs and they just feel clunky compared to 4.1.2. Even the recent apps list appear faster and with less stutter in 4.1.2.

Once we are done with solving all the bugs, we can work on patches to remove lags.

Probably because 4.2 is just a port.

4.2 is a port and way more than what Nexus S was designed to handle. Still, I found it really snappy and only sipping battery compared to 4.1 and even CM10. Only multitasking chokes it, but that can't be helped.

You are really unaware of what NS can handle.
My 2 years old LG Optimus One P500; an MDPI ARMv6 arch device which comes with froyo and can only be updated to GB runs on smooth JB.
NS is way far more capable than that and in the coming future we will prove that too. :victory:

I was happy with JellyShot 0.8 for couple days then with Vanilla 4.1.2 which I used since release, used the same kernel. I tried couple 4.2 for the NS, but everyone felt clunky until JellyShot, I also loved the quick toggles and MMS features.
But I feel you, since 4.1.1 Google images behaved very well and smoother then AOSP compiled stuff.

Same here. I tried greenblue's AOSP 4.2.1 and like the "new features", but I always return back to the stock 4.1.2 ROM. It feels more robust somehow, even with the same kernel.

I´m running on Rasbeanjelly 4.2.1 since it comes out and i´m very satisified with it. I expected nothing more of the Nexus S but i love to hear that there will possibly be improvements in future.

For the last couple of days I've been flashing my device with various roms. 4.2.1. mostly. Everytime I flashed a new rom which was supposed to be smooth fast and super nice it turned out it was slow, sluggish, choppy and not working as a smartphone should. Crt animation is ****ty among every 4.2. Rom i tried. It's delayed, slow and not in the right pace. Lockscreen does not work properly. Scrolling through the lockscreen is laggy. Quick settings are sometimes laggy. I just hate to say it but I think 4.2.1. is really not meant for the nexus s. I just returned to vanilla rom with minimum modifications (flohimself rom) and I love what I see. Everything is fast, fluent and working properly

Yeah. Same experience here. I guess you can't just beat the experience in using actual AOSP ROMs with all sources and proprietary binaries available. Still, appreciate the efforts of all the devs who have been trying to keep our humble device in the cutting edge... even if said edge is a bit dull at the moment.
Still I want to remain optimistic that things will only get better in the future in terms of the 4.2 ROMs.
What do you guys think? Could we achieve the same level of user experience of a 100% AOSP ROM even without Google's support?

I think we can :victory:

I thought that everything is possible. But the more i use my phone the more I think that the stock firmware is simply the best for it. The more new features the faster your phone will become sluggish and unbearably slow. I've been on cm10 for a while and I thought it was fast. I was wrong. I'm now typing from a vanilla rom and that's the way it should be. I just wonder how long will my phone be so fast and snappy. Maybe after couple of days it will become as slow as the other roms leaving me with the opininion that android is simply crap? what do you think?

thanks to all dev for 4.2.1 rom !!!

You all should use a HTC Hero for a week and you'd realize that your phone runs great. If your phone runs so poorly on 4.0+ it's probably you because I see enough people say their phone flies. 4.2 is a bit clunky, but it's also a port. A port takes time to get the kinks out. I thought 4.2 actually ran fine. But I also had a click and wait hero and Windows Mobile phones before this. The lock screen is the main fail on it for a variety of reasons. Some apps are definitely not optimized for 4.2 as well. Beyond that it seems fine. It will get better. I've already had to suffer through this on so many phones, just be patient.

Unfortunately using actual AOSP ROMs will always be better, so everything based on 4.2 will always be less than 4.1.2. I am using the great 4.2.1 ROMs here and enjoying them but they are less than using actual AOSP ROMs.
A reality we have to accept since our beloved NS has been dropped by Google...

Oh don't get me wrong, I think my phone runs great, especially with the vanilla 4.1.2 AOSP ROM I'm running right now. This is also the reason why I believe my complaints with 4.2 ROMs are not because of "me", as you say. Because if I do cause the poor performance on my phone, I would experience the same issues regardless of what ROM I am using, which, as I mentioned before, is not the case. < via xda app>

I think that's why we're on a nexus device, to get the pure Google experience. The only thing the nexus s needs that's not stock it's backlight notifications, and the gnex solved it with the notification led. Let's just admit that this is an old phone, and the nexus 4 is probably where we should head towards. Probably won't find anything for such a great deal for a while. It'll last us as few years for sure.

It wasn't intended as a dig. There are several people though that report 4.2 running fine. This would tend to indicate that there would be something specific to what a user does that would cause the phone to run in a way that made it unbearable. Typically that will be related to some specific application(s) causing an issue due to not being updated. Most problems I saw with 4.2 were very similar to what I saw when we got ics before many apps ever updated and some never did and I'd imagine there are still people using apps that haven't been updated since gb. Definitely 4.2 is nowhere near perfect on our phones though and is running very much like a port and they clearly lagged some stuff up.

JB Nexus S?

Okay I like my nexus. As a matter of fact its the best phone I've ever owned but... Am I alone when I say it can't handle jelly bean? I've noticed stutters in various places compared to ICS. Or am I missing something?

Have you tried a factory reset? Mine was running very smoothly on the OTA. I also wiped my phone before and after the update.
Honestly I don't find it that much buttery. In some app it even seems slower. But I'm running custom ROM with some restored apps.
Maybe with a total fresh start it will work better...

I had the same problem with the OTA. JellyBelly runs smooth though.
Seems a lot better than ICS 4.0.4 stock. Google now is slow to load but otherwise everything is sweet.

The search (response between pressing the search softkey and the search box came up, I need to press it again to show the keyboard) is a lot slower now thanks to Google Now, other stuffs are same for me.

Are you running OTA or some custom ROM? I tried a few different JB ROM's + kernels and wasn't very impressed. It was a very stuttery experience with lots of slowing downs. I guess i had too much junk laying around after so many flashes.
So i wiped everything, went back to stock image and got the OTA JB that way and rooted it. It's been running very smoothly ever since I wouldn't say it's a HUGE improvement over ICS..but maybe like 20% smoother. It's definitely not slower than ICS (i was running both stock ICS 4.04 and CM9 RC1 before. The only places i noticed the lack of buttery smoothness is when opening Google Now and the Camera app. The camera itself is fast and all, but the start up time is longer than i remember on ICS.
From my experience, it's actually "smoother" but not really faster than ICS.
Just went back to CM9 RC2 and I must say that it's much faster than any JB ROMs out there but just doesn't have buttery smooth animation.
I quite like JB. I don't use custom roms (I prefer stock with matr1x), and JB is nicer that ICS. Previously, recent apps was useless to me. It took forever to load. now it loads in an instant. also, I don't get ~10 seconds of lag after I install/uninstall an app, faster to boot, faster to finish loading apps after booting and the ui is much nicer. Ofc, it does stutter from time to time, but it's negligible, as far as I'm concerned. Project Butter is really doing stuff right.
Ofc, it's not as smooth and fast as on the gnex, but that's to be expected. The hw is not as good. But it does a pretty good job. I really wish google would upgrade the kernel and make it use all the ram available...don't see why they don't use it all...

Instead of pressing the search soft key just press the Google logo on the Google bar... that will bring up search faster
mine seems good
I understand your feelings, but JB on nexus s is better than ICS, maybe not faster but definitely smoother. JB does give a nicer feel to the whole phone experience.
If you're on custom rom, try the stock one Afresh. I flashed stock Ics then got JB ota. I have also used Stevens JB and oodies. But after a fresh install, the stock one seems the best. However, I'm waiting for CM10 as CM9 is definitely better than stock ICS. I'm expecting the same from CM10.

I am asking myself the same question as the op. When I got my nexus s about a year ago it replaced a horribly slow nokia n86. The new UI felt fast. With time I got used to the speed of the UI and was generally quite happy with the performance.
Then came ICS and I began to wonder. Sometimes apps took a few secons to open a certain menu, sometimes the same menu was opened in half a second. Now with JB i get the impression that these inconsistent lags are appearing even more often. A typical usecase for me:
Listening to music via BT headset -> press power -> unlock screen -> select (standard) music app -> search for a specific song.
Sometimes this works as expected with <0.5s between steps, sometimes unlocking or opening the music app takes >3 seconds.
I should note that my system is completely stock and was never unlocked or rooted. I did the OTA to ICS and now to JB as intended by google. I never whiped any cache nor did I ever reinstall. When I have the time I may try that just to see if it makes any difference. For the moment though, I am left with the impression that 512mb ram and a single core CPU are not enough for a 2012 OS.
I'm finding a big improvement over ICS. I can't say I've found anything that doesn't work at least as good as ICS and a lot of stuff works better for me. The smoothness has really improved my 'user experience'.
That being said the app developers need to play catch up and get their stuff optimized for JB.
Can't wait to try the amazing custom JB ROMs that are going to be rolling out soon as well.

Same here, I notice quite a few stutters, and I believe more than I had on ICS.
Maybe I'll try to flash stock Google ICS, and then do the official Google OTA update. The current ROM I'm using is this one, but maybe that is really not 100% the same as the Google OTA version?
Also, I'm truly disappointed at the fact that I can't use my voice on Google Now without having the whole cell phone in English. If I don't have the menus in English, all it does is Google searches... Basically seems like anyone that doesn't speak English natively is alienated.
Hopefully chainfire updates chainfire 3d opengl driver to work with jb .
Made ICS significantly smooth should do same with JB
Currently using CM10 and it works perfectly. I have not seen any lag whatsoever so i am pretty happy with it. I used the stock OTA but it was a major battery drain. That's really all I have seen that is negative.

On my i9023 JB, the graphic is slower but my battery life has improve than on ICS. Dont know it is because of JB or I reset the batt setting b4 upgrade to JB.

Which Jellybean Rom to use?

There seems to be quite a few jelly bean roms right now, and without an official leak, I am sure each one has its ups and downs at this point.
I am coming from synergyrom, and want to give JB a try. Since theres is still "beta" I am not sure I wanna try that right away.
Which is the most stable at this point??
Definitely liquid smooth...I've tried others and always revert back to touch wiz stock based roms, and i despise touch wiz...liquid smooth jb is the best I've flashed
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
liquid smooth is awesome for aosp JB, but touchwiz there's not much thats super stable imo
thanks for the input so far!
Please note if there are known issues, that might help make decisions too.
Thanks all!!
I like codename. Super smooth, frickin' fast and barely believable battery life! Some apps don't stream audio over bluetooth and you have to enable a couple of Developer options to address screen flickering, but those are truthfully very minor annoyances you'll be happy to overlook when you get a taste of that ROM.
Seriously, try it. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1900479
I've tried both liquid and codename. They are both very very similar. I can't find cant difference in customization between the two.
Codename ran a little warm for me, not saying liquid runs cool but still.
The reason I jumped to liquid is because in codename (for me anyway) the 160 character MMS bug still persisted, it does not in liquid.

I can respect that. Haven't tried liquid as the CNA ROM got posted around the time I got this phone. I've heard the 160 character error msg is a bit of a red herring, that the msgs actually do get sent but just say they didn't. Was that your experience or did they actually not get sent?
One of the biggest issues with JB roms is if your not in a 4G area then be prepared for some non stop 3G data drops. Also I've noticed weaker signal strength in both service and wifi.

There is a fix for this now but just has not made it's way into all AOSP roms yet. There are in most of the newer AOKP builds right now.
The biggest issue still is the low volume when recording video's. This is an issue in all AOSP roms and has not been fixed yet. I know I also read a lot about speakerphone and in call volume problems but not sure to much about the actual issue.
This is why I am still sticking to an ICS TW Rom. I like knowing everything on my device just works.
The only major thing that keeps from moving to CM10, or Liquid Smooth is the lack of USB Audio. I leave my phone on my dock at work and stream Pandora through the dock's usb audio. I've been using SynergyROM for awhile now, and will probably stick with it until the USB Audio issue is fixed.
AOKP's new build has been great for me. No real issues to report yet...been on it since 3 came out a week or so ago?
i haven't been too impressed jb at all tbh.
Well there's two routes you can go to get your JellyBean fix, and that's either AOSP or TouchWiz.
Touchwiz: You've got two choices.
- You could go with Synergy JB 0.2 beta which is based off the AT&T leaked JB touchwiz build. I personally have not ran it so i can't comment on how well it works, but i use synergy as my touchwiz choice of roms, and was never disappointed by there work, so i'm sure the JB build is working great.
- There is also Jellywiz which is made by Incubus, he's been basing his off the latest leaks, and has a few builds out. One of them is a custom build which just has a few theme changes, and a few other things added in/changed. There's a lot of praise in that thread for his rom, the only bug i had when trying it was that i could not get voice and data to work at the same time (phone calls and web browsing at the same time) But that is because its not based off a verizon leak and until then probably will not work.
AOSP: We'll you've got a lot of options, there's a few here on XDA and then some more on Rootzwiki, so i won't be giving detail on all of them, just a few. But they will all generally 'look' the same, by that i mean because they are all based on AOSP source it'll have the same look to it, since source looks the same.
-CM10: Well it's your basic CM that you've grown to love (or hate ) you can expect nightlies, and things to get fixed in a timely matter. If you used CM7 or CM9 on previous devices then you'll know exactly what to expect. Its built directly from source and you can expect it to be speedy quick.
-AOKP: It's built from source as well just like CM10, but has more options in it, and generally more customization as well. If you use it it'll look a lot like CM10, but it'll have added in bonuses
-CodeNameAndroid: Again built from source, but with codename you've got a ton of customization thrown in, there's a lot of stuff from different AOSP options thrown into it. Right now the Navbar doesn't work without flashing a separate file, but that's not a huge problem since its just a little file to flash. I personally am using it right now and its been great to me, can't really complain about it at all
-LiquidSmooth: Built from source, those that have used a liquid rom before will know exactly what to expect. It will be speedy quick and smooth as hell. You'll find plenty of butter in it as well, they've got there own liquidsettings that'll allow you to do even more customization, and i give them major props, i've currently got them going on my old thunderbolt which is my backup phone, but also used them on my OG Droid and i can vouch that they will provide an amazing rom for users
There are more AOSP Roms over on rootzwiki, but its again the same general thing, each AOSP rom comes from source, but each developer will theme/modify/add/remove/customize to there own liking to provide you with what they feel is the best user experience. The biggest difference between the Touchwiz JB roms and AOSP is that with AOSP you'll have a lot more options going and it'll be stock jellybean, no touchwiz nonsense to hold you back. Some people love the touchwiz stuff and that's fine, but some will love having pure jellybean on there phone and being able to take advantage of that. I'll tell you honestly 100% that AOSP will be faster no matter what touchwiz rom you run.
Oh and kernel wise, i fully stand behind imoseyon's lean kernel for AOSP roms, i've always used imoseyon's kernel's and have always gotten amazing battery life on my GS3 and thunderbolt.
Phew i really hope this helps you with any decision you may have
***If i missed any Touchwiz or AOSP roms i do apologize, i don't know them all off the top of my head, so please don't think that just because i left yours out that i meant it in a bad way***
What are the general downsides with using these JB roms weither it be TouchWiz or AOSP. I'm going to take the jump soon but whats fixed or unfixable? I hear some people say screen flicker and no 3G etc.

Phew i really hope this helps you with any decision you may have
***If i missed any Touchwiz or AOSP roms i do apologize, i don't know them all off the top of my head, so please don't think that just because i left yours out that i meant it in a bad way***

thanks a bunch for the big write-up. I do live in an area that is partly 3g, part 4g, so I am a little concerned about these data drops.. Has this been fixed in the AOSP roms mentioned above?
I would hold out a few more weeks for a touchwiz based rom - I tried Incubus' and got a number of random reboots. Cleanrom 2.5 has been working great!
Currently, all the AOSP roms have the same issues -
- data drops, esp on 3g/4g handoff. There were some recent commits that claim to have fixed this, I'm not sure if it did and which rom's include it
- potential for IMEI loss or brick. Again, you should back up IMEI before any flash, I don't think these issues are present on TW
- TW camera is better. There's an AOSP JB camera mod but hasn't been updated for the newer builds yet
- GPS locks. I keep reading about this in the AOSP rom's, I don't know how common this is.

Data drops were indeed fixed
Imei issues can happen when flashing anything from radios to kernels to roms both touchwiz to aosp. It can also easily be restored.
Tw camera only has a few more features, but in terms of quality their both equal to me. Once the aosp mod is updated it'll be even better.
GPS lock is simple, just get a full lock before flashing aosp and then while having it locked boot into recovery and do your thing.

Why continue to flash new Roms?

I'm certain this has been brought up before Several thousand times, but I gotta ask again...What is it that drives people to constantly flash new Roms/updates every couple days or even weeks?
I have been running cleanRom 3.0 and having no issues, no bugs, GREAT battery life. Why would I change that? I know CleanRom 5.0 has come out, but what would be the point to update if 3.0 is working perfectly and spot on?
Is it that people get bored?
Is it that people wonder what is different?
just makes me wonder.
Im guilty of this myself. I believe a rooted debloated with a theme of your choice is the way to go
iSheep... iSheep... Meowww that's Apple
see whats different, see customizations, battery life, other random usually rom exclusive features.
ive probably flashed 75% of the roms available for this device just to see what theyre all about.
it helps me help other people, and helps me make my device my own.
most of the times its out of boredom and i restore my daily driver rom
Because updates to the ROM = possibly better phone
I prefer stability but I like changing stuff on my phone. I'll stay on a rom for a few weeks and not change a thing but the entire time I'll want to flash something even if I have no reason too smh Ultimately, I'm just not satisfied with what ships out the box.

I used to flash weekly with my OG droid, over the years I have slowed down to once a month or so. I have 4 android devices so thats still a lot of flashing. I am always in search of the perfect rom, haha whatever that may be. faster, smoother, bells and whistles. I don't even know.
To have the latest and greatest rom.
Bug fixes and improvements. Plain and simple.
I've been trying to find the best Rom for what I do every day, but there are always little problems that bug me on every Rom. I damaged Clean Rom 5.0 and have finally stopped the daily flashing. This is as close as I well get to the prefect Rom.

And I get what everyone has said. BUT for those of us that prefer performance (i.e. great battery life, no issues/bugs, fast speeds) over "new'ness", once you find a Rom that gives you the best of all worlds, why would you even worry about the latest? I have been on CleanRom 3.0 for since a couple weeks after it came out. ONLY reason I went to it was because I wasn't happy with the 4 Roms I tried before. Those 4 Roms I tried prior all had bugs or poor battery life that I wasn't happy with. Now that I am Happy with EVERYTHING, I dont plan on changing.
And don't get me wrong here, I know that just because I am satisfied and not wanting to flash doesn't mean that others will be content with that. Nobody needs to tell me that. I'm not trying to debate, just trying to see how others here think.
Because it is great to see the capability of your device by exploring different roms and it is so darn addicting.

Because the majority of us here at XDA who root our phones and flash ROMs are tech junkies. Technology is like a drug to many of us. We are never content and always need the next fix, whatever the latest and greatest may be.
CleanROM 5.0 is built on the latest Jelly Bean leak, which has many improvements over the Ice Cream Sandwich base that CleanROM 3.0 is built on.
mmmmm rom flashing!!!!

I'm like you in that I don't want to potentially compromise the stability and functionality of my phone without significant incentive. For me the incentive was new functionality and increased performance. I've only flashed three roms other than stock.
CleanROM 3.1 was the first ROM I flashed, and as you said, it's stable with great battery life and pretty smooth. The smooth operation of my phone is what made me cautious about jumping to the first JB leak. Instead I kept track of the CR, stock leak, and Jelly Beans threads and read up on the bugs and issues.
Ultimately what I was reading about Google Now and Project Butter made me realize that I really wanted Jelly Bean and the few known issues in JB leak #2 were not enough to stop me from flashing Jelly Beans Build 2. I don't regret that decision, Jelly Beans is a cool rom with a nice AOSP theme, ran really smooth, and generally gave me good battery life (depending on what I was running). Also Google Now is really really cool.
Then I was reading about AOSP roms like LiquidSmooth RC9 and SlimBeans 3.1 that were about the come out. It seems like those teams had dedicated developers who were squashing existing bugs. With the remaining bugs pretty much known, but the ROMs otherwise stable I decided to give LiquidSmooth a shot. The motivation here was to really rid myself of all the stuff Samsung had running in the background, with touchwiz it seems like there are a million things classified under "Android System" when trying to diagnose a battery drain. With AOSP when I look at battery stats Screen and Cellular Calls are the only apps that really make a dent. I also like the clean styling, functionality, and flexibility of the AOSP lockscreen and UI in general.
Unless I encounter any other problems I will probably wait for a stable AOSP 4.2.1 rom to come out so I can try the new features there and hopefully some bug fixes for the bluetooth audio issues in 4.1.2.
I m coming from a tbolt i now have a verizon s3(unrooted so far) n I m guilty of "being in search of a perfect rom". What drove me to search was claims of better battery life, quicker and stable. What drove me back to my daily driver(skyraider) was frequent reboots( while googlemaps), applications not working(slingbox in particular ) inability to view video(live streams from my church).
I m currently doing research for the perfect rom for my S3 as I just activated the s3 yesterday (n I'm missing having a rooted phone) and I m resisting the urge to root!

If everything works it just means you aren't running the latest and greatest.
You must tweak your phone until something breaks.
Then you search for the next fix.
It is the path that must be followed.

Rom search, head hurts

So I've spent over half a day looking at all the custom rom options and now my head hurts.
Wayyyyy too many options. I even tried one (lunareclipse) out which is working great but not quite what I'm looking for.
All I need is a SIMPLE, STABLE and CLEAN rom devoid of pretty much everything but the necessary functions.
No google stuff, no battery gizmos, no fancy themes... just a completely cleaned out, stable rom.
I almost went for CM7 but I couldn't confirm its viability with an Atrix 2.
Anyone who can point me in the right direction will be owed a thousand thanks and over 900000000000 internets. :good:
You wanna stick with ics and below ?
Try the jb ROMs like PA 3.15, CM10.1. They are wayy better than ICS. They have some bugs though. ( look at their respective threads for more info)
And if you're sticking with ICS, try numa or scv7.
And btw, more details about your phone would be better like the region, Android version etc ( As some of the ROMs aren't made for ATT phones)
NOTE : YOU HAVE TO BE ON ICS FIRST TO TRY ANY OF THE ICS OR JB ROMs

I prefer 2.3.6 simply because I don't have ics and I'm not sure I want to add one more step unless there are huge gains in performance and stability to be had.
And I'm in NZ so it's obviously a non AT&T phone. And I've checked for ota updates, but the phone doesn't show any so I'm not sure how to go about upgrading to ics even if I wanted to.

I didn't spend much of time with GB, so I don't remember how it used to be. 4.2 is much better than ICS in my experience.
You get cool features like quick settings, expandable notifications and stuff.
See if any of the files from this thread suits your device region. Don't flash any other files other than the right one.

Trust me, ICS+ is a huge leap. looks WAY nicer, and runs smoother. Stock ICS is pretty clean compared to stock GB, but CM10.1 is probably the simplest of the custom roms. It keeps the stock android look, and adds a few nice little features. Feels pretty much like stock JB though, and trust me, JB is completely worth it. Project butter took the last step for a solid OS that ICS nearly brought.
CM10.1 is quite stable as long as you are not plagued with the black screen bug, which you will know right away. Other than that, the stock battery stats don't work (use Gsam, its really clean and simple), but it runs great otherwise.
I am not a fan of PA and I doubt you would be, as it has a ton of settings and features that you may not need.
PACman combines CM PA and AOKP, so it is full of features, but can be pretty clean.
AOKP is not out for us yet, but when I have time I am trying to get it working, as it is my favorite. Basically it is CM10.1 with a few great features added.
EDIT: just remembered, CM7 was never released for our phone, as it was too hard to get working at the time, so that is not an option, though in the days of GB it was great.

Hey mate, on my NZ Telecom A2 I have observed the following:
Stock 2.3.6: great stability, a little laggy, good battery
NZ Telecom ICS: great stability, ok performance (better than 2.3.6), good battery
JB leak: great stability, good performance, good battery, no device encryption
cm 10.1: : medium stability (occacional camera and sound hiccups that require restarts), great performance, good battery
these are the roms I have tested so far. If I could live w/o encryption, I'd go for the JB leak.

PA actually has a lot less features and settings when compared to CM.. And it is a lot closer to "stock" AOSP jellybean than CM is.
PA's main and signature feature is the per-app size and color settings (and the PIE controls - until CM recently decided to merge those into their source code).
I am not getting defensive, but c'mon.. He won't be a fan of it because you are not a fan? Sounds like you never tried it yourself, so best let people form their own impressions.
Also, if you looked at the AOKP manifest, it is not basically CM10.1. It is AOKP - using a lot from Google's AOSP sources, and mostly just the hardware from CyanogenMod and a few other things.

Sorry, I understand, but I really feel that CM is generally more straight forward and solid, I tried out PA for a change the other day, and while I understand the concept, it is just not really my thing, and judging by the description in the OP he seems to like things pretty plain. Maybe code wise it is closer to stock, but I have always felt that CM felt very clean and professional compared to many other ROMs. Not that they are bad, I have just liked the feel of CM better.
I admit to having some bias in my writing, but I feel that I and the OP have very similar tastes in what we are looking for.
Not trying to smash it or anything, I respect your work, and that of the developers of the ROM itself, but I just think it would not be best based on the given description.
I understand that AOKP is more AOSP, but I was trying to simplify here. In general, I feel that in the versions I have used it is very similar to CM, with a few more features, though it may not be directly from CM source.
Sorry to have disagreed with you, and of course everyone is welcome to their own opinions, I was just trying to give mine.

But, yea, basically all of the other major custom ROMs use a lot of CM code.. Heck, I'm sure even Google merges CM changes back into AOSP at times.

So with the probability that we'll be getting OTA 4.3 soon and the official 4.4 nightlies bound to start anytime, which are you most looking forward to?
I love the features of TouchWiz, but I've migrated to CyanogenMod since 4.1.2 feels really dated now.
Which features do you like about your respective favorite and why?

I'm not here to make fun. I think TW has as many benefits as AOSP does, just for different reasons. :highfive:

4.3 TW to be honest
Want to see if it boosts Quadrant benchmarks since the CM11 builds certainly haven't
Who cares if the quadrant score isn't higher? As others have said, 4.4 is insanely fast! I don't need a score to tell me that. 4.3 TW may have higher quadrant scores but it won't touch 4.4 AOSP for real life speed. Apps open instantaneously, lag is nonexistent... What are you looking for?

Ofc TW will bench better since they "cheat" to boost scores in certain benchmarks.

Actually Ubuntu Touch is what i wan't the most
I like TW. I have been running carbon since goodness is MIA. I can say I look forward to a new TW. I miss some of the features.
Tough question. If we even see TW 4.3 anymore, I'd say that. I was on the cm11 builds for a few days, and like most aosp roms, it is plagued by camera quality and data issues. Data is fine in good service areas, but low/fringe areas struggle, then it murders your battery. I had to come back to TW for stability. I know cm11 is young, but even some aosp 4.2 and 4.3 roms give me similar results with the camera and data issues. Just my experience.

As much as I'd love to use CM11, I can't stand the AOSP camera and that is why I use Touchwiz. CM11 looks so good though, and apparently has something called "ART" which apparently is good, so I will probably flash a CM11 rom to give it a try, but will end up reverting to Touchwiz like always because of the camera.

Exactly like me. I don't even like the TW interface, but the camera and data issues always make me come back. I tried CM11 over the weekend, and it was really smooth. ART is pretty cool, too. Makes the apps launch almost instantly, but isn't compatible with all apps. Makes for a lot of troubleshooting and xda reading. What made me switch back to TW was when my girlfriend and I were literally right next to each other using our phones, she had 4G (Galaxy S4) and I had no data. It never came back until we moved to an area with a little better signal.

ART is not part of CM , its a experimental runtime environment that Google has inserted into 4.4 . At this point it's mainly experimental for developers. Many / most current apps don;t support it.
If you don;t like the way TouchWiz looks , you can run any other launcher on a TW ROm and have the best of both worlds, stability and all features working with a different UI appearance.

Just my .02 but the TW vs. AOSP was never just about appearance. It was more about the amount of "bloatware" on TW roms that some never use or see any need for. Most of the Samsung features and apps fall into the this category.
I just went back to a TW ROM due to way too many random reboots, shoddy data, and mediocre camera quality. It's a love hate relationship, because the only thing I like about TW is the data and camera, while the UI and buttery smoothness of AOSP is what I really enjoy. TW ROMs always lag for me. If only we could have both together...

Apps you don;t want are easily removed or frozen. They don;t hurt anything just sitting there anyway. The Custom TW ROMs have the useless items removed while retaining the good stuff like All Share and the IR Remote functions. They also add the options to install themes, lots of 4.3 and 4.4 features etc. That's why there's not a lot of excitement about 4.3 or 4.4, we already have most of it.
I am excited for both.
