[Q] WalkingHotSpot may be no more - General Questions and Answers

I'm not sure about this but I believe TapRoot Systems, the makers of WalkingHotSpot, has folded up the tents. I no longer have access to the service on my AT&T Tilt. It suddenly just stopped working this past Thursday. When I try to visit their site, I never gain access. I placed a call to TapRoot and the number reports as being disconnected.
Does anyone else have any insight on this?
Thanks!

Walkinghotspot problems
I have had same experience. Walkinghotspot website is not in existance but found Taproot and planned to call tomorrow. You beat me to it! This disappoints me. I thought it was a verizon thing. I wonder if this product just blew up or if Verizon AT&T etc just figured it out and stopped it somehow? Wonder what other product works? I used to have PDAnet but that was a few phones back. ANY INSIGHTS?

NormBo,
I don't know. I did call today and, as I mentioned, the number is disconnected. I sent an email to TapRoot and no response. I don't think it has anything to do with AT&T or Verizon at all. I think something maybe going down with TapRoot itself.
I'm a newbie here so I can't post links yet. That said, if you go to wmwifirouter dot com or just google, wmwifirouter, you'll find one alternative that I ran into today. Just unfortunate because it's another license fee to pay when WalkingHotSpot was supposed to be "lifetime."

This is a great website with a lot of people much smarter than me. Hopefully we will get some suggestions as to the best alternative or perhaps a fix. I am sure there were a lot of people who got sucked into that lifetime subscription. We just didn't know it was THEIR lifetime! Hopefully someone will notice our post and respond.

Yep. I tweeted the post as well. Perhaps someone will have an answer. However, I have found it a bit curious that no Google entries OR XDA entries have posted on this issue. I'm thinking the problem may be an issue of low demand for the software.
At any rate, I'm going to give the wmwifirouter trial a shot. Then I'll decide if I want to pay for another license fee.

-----Update
There is a very decent alternative to WalkingHotSpot if you've experienced the "blackout" mentioned above. The name of the software is WMWifiRouter. It's actually a bit more robust, in terms of features. They offer a 21 day trial. I started mine today and I'm pleased with it thus far. Hope this helps other WHS users.

WHS did this before
Happened to me about a year ago. Website came back up after a week, and all was well. Phone #'s for TapRoot were disconnected back then too. I had used WMWIFIROUTER trial period to get me thru. I don't know how long to wait before I purchase it. Anyone with insight, please share.

Thanks for this. Guess I'll wait to see if WHS comes back up before I sign up with WMWifiRouter.

I believe they are really gone.
I checked retail site (Handango.com) where I origianally bought my walkinghotspot copy and they no longer even have a reference to it and it is unavailable for purchase.

Yep. I think all signs point to them being defunct. Oh well. At least there are alternatives out there.

dissappointed with walkinghotspot
I have used it for quite a while, also. This is what I hate about purchasing licenses. They can give up and you have no recourse. I, too, am using wmwifirouter in the trial period and will be needing to purchase their license soon. It seems like a good program and hope it is not dependent on some proxy server that can have the plug pulled at anytime.

WMWifiRouter still works if the server goes down. Unlike WalkingHotSpot that uses a "phone home, no answer, stop app" system, WMWifiRouter uses a "phone home, no answer, still work" system.

Not sure why there seems to be a delay in loss of functionality, but loading an old backup gives a short period--a session, perhaps two--before it agains displays:
W002: Unable to connect,
please check network
settings.
So WHS functionality apparently...eventually...requires some sort of hand-shake/confirmation; however, using the trial of WMWifiRouter has (but not always...) "jump started" WHS...for a short time...?? I don't get it but, guessing, whatever registry settings (?) WMWifiRouter makes during set-up/load would seem to be changing whatever WHS intentionally hamstrings...after [delayed/?] attempted (but unsuccessful) hand-shake/confirmation.

Stolen Phone.... Any Help??

I know this isn't a wm6 question, but I do know this is the most viewed forum for this wizard, and I am really reaching out for help from yall. I am fairly certain my phone just got stolen within the past couple of hours. I'm sure many of yall are like myself, in the face that having your wizard stolen/lost would be probably on of the list of things you would forever dread happening. I have tried calling it and it goes straight to voicemail.. Which for my phone (and probably many of yalls) never never happens. I NEVER turn it off.. Unless its getting a new rom or being reset it doesn't know what being turned off is like... So the fact it is going to voicemail leads me to believe a couple things and scenarios.
First someone jacked it, couldn't figure it out, and it turned it off to later resale or whatever else.
Second, since my phone is the Cingular 8125, if the person who stole it has cingular, they could have popped their sim card in, thus making any call I would recieve go straight to voicemail...
I bought the phone off of ebay, so its never been formerly aknowleged with cingular that I have it.
My question is... If someone was to try to use it, is there anyway cingular would even be able to tell (since technically it was never registered officially with them), or should I possibly say goodbye forever...
Also I had no security/stolen phone programs installed... totally regret that now..
I know its just a phone, and not the end of the world. However I know this is a forum where our phones aren't just always phones, but something we put a lot of time and energy into. So I hope you feel where I am coming from...
I am currently a college student, stuggling as all of us are... So losing it is going to hurt the ole wallet pretty hard no matter what I end up doing.. Any input yall have whatsoever is greatly appreciated..
Thanks for listening and letter me vent...
Unfortunately, its probably gone, and I doubt its traceable (if you know the IMEI of the phone, you might be able to get Cingular to shut it off the network, but I doubt they do much more than that).
I've been thinking about installing one of the anti-theft programs (there is a free one I recall that will detect a differnet SIM card). Seeing your post makes me think I need to find this now and look into doing this (I've come close to leaving mine at a resteraunt a few times).
BTW: While I realize you are a college student, but if you have renters insurance (I'm assuming you don't own a home, otherwise we'd be talking homeowners insurance instead), you could possibly make a claim on this there. Also (not that it helps that much) when you do your taxes next year, you can claim property theft (make sure you have documentation though) as a loss / write off (but you have to itemize to claim that so may not be worth it to you if you don't already itemize).

the above link is for the above mentioned security freeware, at that site is a link for the download, as well as an explanation of how it works. i'm gonna install it now, and hope it works. sorry to hear about your 8125, i know this link is too late for you, but perhaps will help someone in the future.
I don't know how it works in the US but this is what I would be thinking if this happened to me in the UK...
1. I need to report the SIM card stolen to my carrier straight away. Any calls made on that SIM before I report it stolen means I have to pay for them.
2. When reporting it stolen I'd ask the carrier to block both the SIM and phone IMEI. I don't need to know the IMEI, the carrier can trace that from my phone number. It also doesn't matter if I bought the phone from my carrier or elsewhere as my account with them is registered by the SIM.
3. The best I could hope for is that once the phone is IMEI blocked the thief will throw it away and some kind person will hand it in to a police station. Here in the UK you can register your IMEI on a national police computer database so it can be sent back to you if found (obviously if you don't have a record of your IMEI then you can't do this, and here in the UK a carrier wouldn't be allowed to give you the IMEI).
Hope some of this might help.

You have to remember one thing about that software. It only works if your phone has GPS. The 8125 does not have GPS hardware. So this wont do anything for us 8125 or MDA users.
something i did, was change my boot screen. it has an image i like, but using a paint program, i typed over the image:
this mda belongs to jennifer boyd
it may have been lost or stolen
if found please contact me
[email protected]
at least when they boot the phone, unless they whore xda and KNOW how to change the boot screens, they will see this message...in my mind, it may not get my phone back, but at least i will guilt trip the person...and if it is found, perhaps a kind person will actually return it to me.
and all the above suggestions are good. i wish you the best of luck. i'd freak if i lost my precious.
and damn and double damn, i was hoping that software would help. guess i'll stick to my guilt tripping method.
How about this one?

I have done a similar thing, by putting the "owner" info into the rom and changing the registry to remove the "owner info" control pannel applet then when they hard reset they get my welcome note same as you and also they can't disable/change owner details
Thanks everyone.....
I've pretty much decided that getting it back is a lost cause.....
I encourage everyone to some type of antitheft application installed... its something I always saw, but always thought "oh it will never happen to me"....
If anyone knows of someone trying to get rid of their wizard, or know of a place other than ebay that sells used phones... please let me know...
Zack

Thanks for the help that you give everyone in this forum.... Its probably no coincidence that you were the first to reply and the fact that I had crossbow reloaded on my phone at time it was stolen... You do awesome work and are an asset to this forum...
eye on thief
Hi
Since a couple of weeks I have the application Eye on Thief on it... and... it works.
Eye on thief is an application that sends an SMS message to a predefined other number (of your girlfiend/mom/dad/... ).
In that way you have the mobile phonenumber of the one who stole it/found it/ bought it from the thief.

Actually, MobileJustice is free, and it does work fine on the Wizard (you just can't use the GPS or LOCman part of it). I installed it last night on my phone (after reading Zack84a's post) and set it up and it sent an SMS to my wife's phone when I didn't tell it a valid SIM. Also has a feature where you can send an SMS to your phone (so after you get the SMS about an unknown sim, you can reply back) with a password and a command and put messages on the screen of your phone (they don't see the SMS come in, just suddenly a dialog box with your text shows up on the screen).
I've made a package for this, and plan on building this in to the next version of Crossbow Reloaded if people want to use it. Like Zack84a, I've always seen these apps, but just thought I'd do it later... Seeing his post has made me realize I need to put this in place.
Downside with MobileJustice is unless you build something inot the extended rom, a hard reset would knock it out. Some of the commercial stuff apparently does this for you (so that alone may make it worth the $20 or so to register).
IMEI nomber
Hey Zack84a,
Your Cingular 8125 IMEI # is on a label on the original box, if U still got it/keep it.
Hey, I have a friend selling his T-mobile MDA (htc wizard) for $200. Let me know soon, and I can put you in contact with him, cuz he's posting it on ebay.
hey i know exactly how you feel. my phone didnt exactly get stolen but it was lost and i wasnt able to find it. and here in the US theres not much you can do about your phone getting stolen so it really sucks. luckily i got a new one from a friend because he works for cingular and someone that worked there had it.i put the security software on my new phone too.
so im sorry for your lose and hope you figure something out.

Read the 3rd post of the Crossbow Reloaded 1.7 thread. Maybe that will help. Personally to test it I've just deleted all sim's in the auth list. Just enabled it and setup the person to send it to.
Thanks, but I did what the post said, still no go! I sent an SMS to my wife's phone manually (just to make sure it works) and it went through! So, for some reason, the MJ program just will not work with my config. Not sure why.

XDA Flint - Impossible to buy :(

HI,
Has anyone been able to get there hands on a rebadged XDA Flint?
I have been calling O2 everyday for over a week, no one on there sales / upgrades team has any idea this device even exists. They have no information about it, when it will be available, how much it will cost. Nothing.
There website says it is available and on myxda site its the first device you see.
The shop section will allow you to add to basket but 404`s when trying to pay / enter details.
Has anyone got any information from them or know when I can get my hands on this!?
Thanks,
Embassy
O2 the great pain. The saga conntinues.
This device is only available online and to NEW business customers only.
I have now spent over 3 1/2 hours in total trying to do one of two things.
Either upgrade my contract to a Business package or close it and re open a new acccount under a business tarrif.
This seems just a little to complicated for O2. I have been passed from department to department.
They all say they cant do what I request and pass me on to another team, I work in a call center enviroment myself and it is becoming painfully ovious that these agents simply do not want to handle my call, most likely as they are scored on there call durations.
I will update this IF and when I finally manage to get this device.
O2 better get there finger out, there getting one more try and im taking the 5 phones on my contract to orange and will get the HD instead.
I warn you, if you want this device on O2 be prepared for a up hill strugle with there phone system and there staff.
Anyone know of another provider offering the X7510?
O2 are unusual in that the Online, Offline, Personal and Business departments operate as separate entities, so transferring between them is difficult or impossible.
Also, it is common for new devices to be unavailable for upgrades for some time after they are available to new customers.
Interestingly, the price of the Flint has risen from a fixed £179 on all tariffs in early December to a sliding scale starting at £279 now, and all contracts are 24 months.
There is no doubt the Flint is a good device- I was one of the pre-release testers. However it is not a major step forward over the X7500/Ameo, and really suffers for the lack of hardware buttons, and also an older implementation of WM6.1 than more mainstream devices.
T-Mobile offers the x7510 (branded as the Ameo)
x7510 = t-mobile ameo 16gb

It might be wise for you (and nanoruler in his quoted post) to edit out the O2 guy's email address- if you want to assist people, they could always PM yopu for the address.
There are a lot of bots out there combing sites, and harvesting email addresses to add to spam lists.

Is it in UK yet? It was originally only in Germany, and doesn't appear on T-Mobile's UK site at present.

I bought my XDA Flint on eBay for £470.
Still no joy with this, absolute nightmare.
Now being told the only way to get this on o2 is to change to downgrade to pay a go from a standard consumer account and then upgrade to business.
This doesn’t add up with being told I can negotiate a free handset as I have been a long standing customer.
It’s looking like I need to make a complaint to get this resolved.
With regards to eBay, I have never paid for a phone / pda in my life.
Neither have I really. Not fully anyway. The way to do it is to upgrade to the most valuable handset you can for free or by paying as little as possible, then sell it as brand new for a shedload of cash. Use that cash towards the purchase of the handset you really want.
The trick is to sell it on again before it goes too commercial i.e. before it goes to the big network providers. That way it will retain most of it's original value, and you can put the cash you make towards the next new thing, again before that hits the networks. You'll still get your default upgrade too. Just upgrade for free again to a valuable device and sell it on. Then you have two pots of cash to use towards a new power toy every 12/18/24 months (depending on your contract). Gotta stay one step ahead! This isn't too difficult because, at least as far as HTC are concerned, their devices are released by them about 6 months before the networks get hold of them and stick all their ugly badges and buggy software on them!
I was a bit slower with the Flint, as the Advantage x7510 was far too expensive anyway beforehand. I just gave into temptation, even though O2 and T-Mobile already have their hands on it. Hopefully, it's value won't depreciate too much in the next 6-12 months.
Got my new XDA Flint for FREE!!! (hee-hee)
I just got my new XDA Flint but am afraid of starting it up. Will it try to install an O2 HMI instead of the normal WM 6?
This forum helped with my XDA Exec with WM5 by providing me the corporate number to overide the O2 HMI.
Can anyone help please?
I got this as a new upgrade plus I reduced my monthly costs on my business tarrif with their new small business tarrif...sweet!!!
There is no 'Corporate Mode' option on the Flint- all installations are the same.
However, there is no O2 customised front end. In fact there is no front end at all, as O2 do not include HTC Home in the build.
The release ROM for the Flint is a good one- newer than the cooked ROMs, and is fast and reliable.
If you use it with a non-O2 SIM, you will need to manually enter the connection details as it doesn't include HTC Connection Manager.
Thank you NeilM!
NeilM,
Thank you very much for your help.
So I should have done the full install instead of skip it? Ooops? I will do a hard reset then and start over. The quick start guide says I can make video calls....is this true in WM6 I thought this was not supported?
My next task is to see if I can port the Tom Tom license over to this PDA. Then put an SPB front end unless anyone has a better suggestion?
As you can tell I am behind the times - it has been a long time since I upgraded from the XDA Exec (2005 - which has always been rock solid and reliable) and the Flint fits my purpose of a mobile office whilst going to clients facilities. This Flint in a small briefcase and a note book makes my commutes to clients a breeze. I see other consultants with giant ruck sacks and 20 million gadgets/laptops notes books etc and I pop out with this thing, my mobile phone, a leather note book and I am ready. I did not get the Flint to be a phone. My problem with Blackberry's are the keyboards are too small for my fingers and Blackberries dont have MSWord and Excel apps to create/edit information and the Flint has a video out so I can show PPT presentations on sales calls. If only MSFT could allow creation/editing of PPT...that would be a result. (Suggestions anyone?)
Also, does anyone know if there is an Open Source application for pushmail as my company run Linux servers and was looking to see if one existed to mimic the push of mail instead of the Flint constantly checking, thereby saving power. (In no way am I trying to avoid the MSFT push mail solution, I just want to know if another exists as Open Source)
Don't reply if any of the above has already been discussed in this forum. I should do the work to find out the info. However, I did not find too many Flint threads on this forum so I do not know if there are SW or HW nuances that need to be considered.
Thanks to all!
No problems with the questions! The Flint/X7510 is sufficiently 'rare' that there are few comprehensive answers out there, though it is very similar to the X7500.
You definitely need to hard reset (Settings/System/Clear Storage) as a lot of essentialstuff gets installed from the supplementary installation (Opera, JetsetPrint etc)
The O2 theme is very blue as you would expect, but there is absolutely no other O2 stuff apart from the O2 Connection mamnager which configures the settings for whichever O2 provider you are with. If you use another operatorSIM, you will have to enter the settings manually, but this is not difficult.
For using as a presentation tool, I'd advise buying the enhanced output cable (unless it is already supplied)as it includes a USB host connector and an RCA Video Output. The USB can be used with an external mouse/keyboard (even a wireless combo) or a pen drive if needed.
If you are serious about needing Powerpoint presentations, and don't mind spending a bit of cash, then I can highly recommend Softmaker Office. It is expensive at €70 but has 3 programs which are respectively fully compatible with desktop versions of MS Word, Excel and Powerpoint. You can create, edit and read any file on the WinMo device, and can even print to PDF format.
For a front end, I think Spb Mobile Shell is an excellent choice, especially in combination with PocketPlus (but you need 4.03 Beta available from the SpbClub forums). You may also need to look at an extra Soft Keyboard, as the Flint only includes the basic MS ones. Cootek Touchpal and Spb Keyboard are both good options.
Video calls have been supported in all 3G Windows Mobile devices, from WM5 onwards- not sure where you got the info about WM6, but that is not the case! Maybe you were reading about US versions of the X7501 which some companies insisted on their users utilising- this had the front camera removed for security reasons (supposedly!). Obviously both parties need a decent 3G signal but it works well. The Flint runs WM6.1 and has good video capabilities.
TomTom- how old is your version? If more than a year it would pay you to buy the current version with its updated maps- currently on offer at £30 for UK and £40 for Europe. If not, then TomTom will supply you with a new activation code. If you have only used one previous activation, you can go to www.ttcode.com, enter your map's product ID and your new phone's Device ID, and it will generate a new activation code. If you've already used your activations, then email TT support with a proof of purchase for the Flint and they might provide a new code. Beware though that if they deem the Flint as unsupported, they may not give you a code.
For 'quick and dirty' location, then the new MS Live Search V4 or Google Maps work well, though the GPS does take up to 5 miunutes for a 1st fix (subsequent fixes are quicker).
Hope this helps!

For everyone pissed at Olipro & cmonex...Hard-SPL

Any one who has received the following error:
"Hard-SPL is for non-commercial purposes only, we have detected that you appear to already have unlocked another device, if you wish you unlock commercially, please e-mail [email protected] or [email protected] to discuss solutions; However if this is your first device, then please ensure that the radio is turned ON and retry"
I wanted to share my experience. I've read countless pages from the xda and ppcg forums, trying to decide whether or not to make a payment of £4.00 GBP to regain the ability to unlock my seemingly blacklisted device.
I wanted to know if making payment would work specifically for my situation which was:
New Sprint Touch Pro2 with an original SPL of 0.72 and running Windows 7.
I found a reference of a Sprint user paying and immediately being able to unlock and after getting a response from razorloves. Today I decided to make payment, not being interested in waiting a month for my open ticket to be answered.
Here were my exact steps:
1. Connected TP2 to computer.
2. Opened RhodiumW-HardSPL_V1_10R3.exe
3. Selected Flash Hard-SPL (Automatic flash)
4. Received error message about non-commercial use.
5. Selected Yes (would like to make donation)
6. Was taken to http://rhodiumw.htc-unlocks.com/hardspl.php and selected Donate With PayPal
7. Logged into PayPal and made payment.
8. Repeated steps 1, 2, 3.
9. Continued unlock process, completed successfully.
The reason I started this thread is because I spent so much time looking for the specific answers. I agree, the developers have not been helpful to the community as of late. They should update all their posts and indicate that after the first free unlock, you are likely going to be required to make payment if you'd like a speedy unlock if your device is blacklisted.
I thought the developers deserved a little retribution.

Same here.. paid money for spl and sim unlocker .
but didn't work nether. and thats my second touch pro two first one was unlocked no issues and replacment no luck even after paying money.
opened ticket waiting waiting waiting
while not having working phone .
gratitude
should just be glad that they make the first one free and not complain because you didn't want to wait for them to work it out for free
I did tell her that she really needs to make it very clear in the application what the deal is, since she's sort of returned now I'll see if I can get her to turn out a new version that makes it clearer, I did try to alleviate it a bit by adding the info into an autoreply on the ticket system, but in any case, the Hard-SPL stuff is dealt with by her, not me.
a word to the wise: if the purchase page presents you with an IMEI box to fill in, if you don't fill it in with your actual IMEI and instead you just pay using the 12345678901234 IMEI - IT WILL NOT WORK, the point of not filling it in is for people who successfully unlocked and simply want to donate... so the lesson here is don't be a dumbass, although equally, if it doesn't display your IMEI that means it had an issue with the device, in which case stick a SIM in it and put it on GSM/UMTS only mode, tends to work wonders.
Those wondering about the state of play with reply time, I heartily recommend you go read my post in the SIM/CID/Sec thread
im pissed too

lol. Oops. Post edited. Thanks.
what pisses me off they call this donationware.. it's not and do they even donate any proceeds to xda?
I know comonex a little from "old times" of hpc, and I remember that she always were helpful. She did a lot to community , for free.
Is it that bad that she would like some money for her work?
I'm pretty sure that if there was some slowness in responding to mail, she had a good reason.
Nobody is forced to donate, they can still use phones with branded roms. Or sell them and buy one that doesn't need to be "unlocked".
I paid about $20 - It didn't work. I understand why though. I dont have the phone activated (and I dont have sprint) so no internet; which I've since read the process needs OTA internet (because wifi disconnects when plugged into the PC). I'm sure the real process to unlock the security doesn't need the access to the web but they gotta make sure you paid. $-) I've had a ticket open for weeks, updated twice - no response. If your going to run a business (donationware ???) customer service is a must, otherwise you have unhappy customers like me - who do not recommend your product. SAVE YOUR MONEY - ITS A STINKY TURD - Maybe once (if) my issue gets resolved I'll retract my above statements.
Just trying to figure this out.
I would be considered a commercial customer. I want the ability to put new roms on our companies phones when it is needed. If that costs money the. So be it.
Really what I care about is the quality of the rom. I do not have all day to play with this stuff. We have phones that are annoying our users.. Htc and Verizon loaded these phones up with a pile of junk that the users never use.
I need a rom that is easy to flash like the Verizon / htc roms.
They need battery life.
They need to be able to answer the phone. This is actually some the users have trouble doing with the stock roms.
They need the phone to sync with exchange and use email in push mode.
Navigation would be nice...
Bluetooth is needed.
Web browser and Microsoft store/market is last.
I would pay anyone for a working Rom and the ability to update phones. (phones break, a lot) I don't want to keep track of imei numbers or anything like that.
We are behind a class c ip address so as far as I am concerned that's good enough for me to validate who we are. Otherwise give me a user account.
So whats so wrong with these folks?
I just wanted to thank Olipro & cmonex for their hard work for hard SPL, SIM unlocker, and hacked radios. However I do have one complaint, I bought the SIM unlocker and tried to apply on phone when I got a message to check e-mail. E-mail message stated I needed to wait 48 hours because my location didn't match with my billing address. I dont have a problem with some sort of fraud protection built it, but it obviously doesn't work properly seeing that my location was exactly the same as my billing address. Hope it works in the next 48 hours, or I'll be really pissed.
Try to contact them by mail, maybe something went wrong (e-mail wasn't delivered ?).
Ive flashed to phones both tp2 cdma using olipro and cmonex website with no issues
I paid for both unlocks each time and BAM instant unlock both times I even donated a little more for extra support which I never used but I did email olipro before I paid again when I got the second phone and the email was answered that same day within a few hours because I forgot the process and he gave me great advice, I dont know much about phones being on the blacklist, bad imei I guess, I was at the sprint store picking up some accessories and there was this dumba$$ showing off his phone that he flashed over to a new rom to the sales rep and the rep politely asked for his phone number and name and cancelled his total equipment replacement warranty plan for modifying the phone and he can never get it back, that dude was pissed, but it was his own fault for being a dumbass,
I had to do a return once and wasnt able to relock my phone so I ran it over with my car a few times til it no longer powered on turned it in and presto got a new tp2 Ive got no complaints about the htc unlocks crew on my next phone Im going to go with the commercial unlock option, thanks olipro and cmonex I have found out the only issue is that when ppl try to get the unlocker for free, they complain and complain but think about would Bill Gates send you a free copy of windows 7 just because you bought a laptop with XP I dont think so, or another way to look at it is would you to to work for free? I dont think so either. quit being cheap and pay the 8 euros.
if your offended at what I am saying you must be among the many who want something for nothing, this is america GET REAL!

Handango doesn't download paid apps

I purchased a game from Handango on the gtablet, and the only download options are "Email to Phone", and "SMS to Phone".
No "Download to PC" option like there is for free games.
When I tried the Email link, it's not selectable hypertext.
Next, copied link from PC to gtablet, and no paste function on browser url, and no menu function on button.
Soooo.. I typed the url manually in the browser and got routed to the homepage.
I emailed Handango CS, having to specify a Viewsonic phone because the form kicks me out unless I specify something on the list.
Naturally, the gtablet is not on the list.
I called Viewsonic CS, and they tried to get a quick email response from Handango, but no go.
Then, the CS guy asked me to call THEM when I get it straightened out with Handango so THEY know.
This bleeding edge stuff is wearing thin.
So, for now, unless I'm missing something here, don't pay for any apps until they get a way to transfer an apk to our gtablet over WiFi somehow.

Pocketgear process could kill interest in this device for all but mainly custom rom users. In spite of fixing some bad bugs, the app portal seems a poor effort. This could create a steady supply of returns.
They need to open the market up. Galaxy Tab (per Samsung) has the full market on their wifi-only version.
I didn't even bother to test it. I'm ripping it out of TnT Lite 2.00.

One thing is for sure, their CS folks are attentive and cordial.
1. Told them about the Pocketgear process for paid apps- they have already communicated it is not a good solution to the dev team. This issue will hurt them, in spite of the fixes.
2. They mentioned the Nvidia patch and have asked it be added to next update
3. Next update is 12/19 (Flash in this update). I think this will be too late, due to the Pocketgear process and lack of Flash (if still on the box).
Sure, easy to upgrade, but most folks only know XDA as letters.

Hate to say this but I think 12/19 for a POSSIBLY better fix is going to be too late and this device is doomed. The bloggers are starting to pick up on the negative feedback here as well and there are only so many of us willing to take the plunge with Modding, just as what I believe is only a small percentage of apple user's actually jailbreak their devices, atleast for the first year. This is only my opinion, but for $400, think we were just Guinea pigs in a soon to be failed experiment. Now I have to ask myself is worth waiting for a final fix when it will be too late to return it, or do I hold out for something better with the devices coming out Q1 next year?!?! I love to tinker as much as the next guy, but at some point I'd like to actually use my device more than tinker with it.
Edit: I echo the sentiment on CS. They have been helpful were they could. I also put some blame on Google for this as well. I think they could offer a hair more support to these guys, rather than say we don't think android is a good tablet platform. But I understand as well, to a point.
I'm keeping mine, regardless of what happens. I know some compare this to the Gentouch, but this device is not the same as that piece of carp.

From my (many) calls to CS, I'm getting the impression they're all learning from US.
Sure, they're cordial, and want to be helpful, but so far they've just been taking notes for the developers.
Why isn't there a real CS system with trouble tickets that are followed up.
At least we'd have the satisfaction of knowing they're on it.
We can't even email our specific problems intact.
It's second hand word of mouth typed as we talk to CS.
I realize there are market forces at work here, but this apparent gold rush mentality is bound to backfire when average users compare these to an iPad.
While I'm thrilled to hold breakthrough technology in my hand, I don't appreciate being forced into the role of beta tester.
Problems as obvious as banner ads riding over the menu bar should have been rectified before release.
This last moment effort at a marketplace is making me wonder if there's hope myself.
I really want the gtablet to succeed, but like so many other products in history, the first to market is seldom the best.
Don't look now, but here comes the Notion Ink Adam!
Oh well, at least the update went smooth for me.

VZW Knows, also update notification

Hey guys, long time lurker, first time post here.
I just got off the phone after a nightmare of random reboots and so on and so forth. VZW send me a text today saying an update to my phone was available. Thinking I'd find out if it was simply to disable mobile tether or not I called in. The tech was surprised, but said he did see the notes on my account that the message was sent.
He said it was NOT 2.3, but another maintenance release, approved today for push tomorrow. All of this can be dismissed, however he did say something quite interesting. He said he couldn't fully help me because my phone was rooted. Obviously I denied that, and he said look man, I know it is. I said how? He replied that he could see that I was running DASbamf 2.1, which I am. Explained that it was part of the new system for the 4g phones. Believe me or not, I just wanted to put it out there that VZW can apparently tell, his words were that more than likely, it's pulled from when the phone is activated. Has anyone else heard of either of these? This is also posted on droid forums, just putting that out these to avoid the duplicate talks.
I always thought they knew, just can't do much about it. However, if they start using that information to deny certain services, it would be a major problem.
We need one of the nifty Verizon employees that frequent here to comment on this.
that is interesting. In theory, they could use that to deny warranty claims.
or the devs could just change the listing and fake the rom info right?
Well, thats my thought / hope. He read right back to me saying I was running a custom rom. I got to talking with him and he admitted he was rooted as well, and additionally stated that as a whole VZW doesn't pursue the issue. it just tripped me out, that he read it out. He had a very "don't bull**** me" tone. haha
tricky verizon.... they are catchin on!
if their phones didn't come with so much bloatware i wouldn't feel the need to root.
The screen cap was from today, obviously. What do you guys think of that?

Haha, all warranty-implications aside, that's pretty cool that he could tell you what rom you were running.
Jcase has said before that they can tell, a big give away is you radio/baseband version. Do they care if you're rooted? Probably not unless your stealing services ,in which they are starting to act on and try to eliminate.
I root because I like to tinker with computers, I like the customization and speed that rooting gives us.
No flame please.

Hi. I just bought a Thunderbolt after having problems with Sprint. I was told the same thing and when I mentioned it in the forum from a thread I posted, I was called a liar, among other things. I was told, as you can see from my post, that they also know every site you visit and whether you are paying for the Mobile Hot Spot. Sorry to hear your story, but glad that it validates what I was told from Sprint.

Well I'll just jump on over to Sprint if they terminate my contract! The developer support is the reason I have an Android phone. I'm sure the devs could come up with something to block this though.
Honestly... I think terminating contracts over rooted phones would be one of the dumbest moves a cellular company could make.
It takes a certain technical know-how to root a phone, even with "easy root" phones such as the Google Nexus series. These technical people are also the people that are likely to be in positions of IT buying power in major organizations. If one of these people were to loose service over the rooting their personal phone, they may make the case to organizational management to move the organizational fleet of phones away from that carrier. In turn, the termination of one contract leads to the eventual termination of an entire fleet of phones. This "Mutually Assured Destruction" scenario prevents the cellular carriers from taking any large scale averse action against rooted phones. Furthermore, these technical people frequently talk to each other through rapid dissemination means (i.e. these forums). This sets up another scenario where the cancellation of one person's service may lead to the loss of many current and future subscribers.
These two factors leads to an environment where rooting is tolerated but not encouraged by the carriers. Carriers do not want to encourage rooting because it allows people to get rid of money making applications (i.e. City ID). However, they can not take averse action against rooted phones as that would launch the "mutually assured destruction" scenario discussed above. Carriers have turned to the method of locking down the phones as much as possible to prevent casual rooting of the devices. However, once a device is rooted, it is out of the carrier's control.
I fell asleep shortly after this thread was posted, I will however post updated pics once phone is charged.
