When using the MHL cable to output the phone's screen to the TV, The video is not nearly as crisp as it is when I play it back later on the computer. I assume this is because the device is showing the compressed video form on the device which is what is being output?
Is there any way to output a better quality version to the TV? (App, etc) Has anyone else felt the same way?

I just picked up the MHL dongle last week. Works great! Love it!
I think VIDEOS I've shot on the Sensation look like 1080p/720p on my Plasma HDTV... to my eye at least. I assume that's what you're talking about....videos you've recorded or HD You Tube vids etc?
Are you for sure recording in HD? 1080p/720p?? I think by default, the Sensation is set to qHD res in the camcorder settings.
You may already know this, but for those who don't.....
The UI on the phone isn't going to be true HD on your HDTV, as the Sensations display is only qHD 960x540. 720p is 1280X720 and 1080p is of course 1920x1080....officially. There is NO compromise on the official HD resolution standard. It either is or isn't HD....qHD is a marketing term...it looks like true HD on mobile devices, but it's not truly HD.

That's correct you have to manually change camcorder to 1080P mode.

Thanks! Yeah I am up to date on my resolution knowledge , and Yeah I guess it outputting it in HD, it just is a little jittery, and for fast moving objects (I was recording ping pong XD ) it looked much smoother when I pulled the file off and played it on the computer.
Where are you guys getting your MHL cables? Are they the official HTC ones?

qHD isn't actually marketed as HD... it's qHD because it's (q)uarter HD, as in 1/4 of the HD resolution. 1920 / 2 = 960, and 1080 / 2 = 540. Divide length and width each by 2, and the overall number of pixels gets divided by 4.
It's not just a marketing term.

Correct...it is actually quarter HD, of course....hence the "q". What I meant by marketing term is that a vast majority of people out there see the "HD" and may think it's actually HD...when of course it's not.

I have been wondering why do these phone manufacturers and such try to use 'HD' on the names of their phones - their usually is nothing HD about it except for 720p video recording. If they claim it is HD, I would then like to at least see some kind of High Quality screen or maybe an HD resolution (or both)...or HD sound....something that really represents HD as we know it on our gaming consoles and televisions and youtube videos and such...

it should be as easy as getting a rom dump from a rogers subscriber and odin flashing it to this phone. 1080i isnt really better than 720p, especially if things are in motion. a sporting event would look betterin 720p while something stationary would look better in 1080i, 1080i is actually easier on the processor.
Where are you guys seeing that it says 1080i? The ad from Samsung says full HD, and the article specifically says 1080p. No where do I see 1080i mentioned.
i hope so. but full hd can mean many things. 720p and 1080i used to both mean full hd, now there is 1080p plus the att infuse was rumored to have 1080p recording for a long time. we will only know when rogers releases there version

so what 1080i is just a nonsense number aimed at confused consumers? pardon me if im a little sceptical about the 1366x768 being called 1080i by any manufacturer, i have never heard that. but i will admit that manufacturers will mis lead you at every step of the way because they think you are too stupid to understand the facts. i was under the impression that 1080p tv's played 1080i signals by doubling the lines. i have seen 1366x768 tv's sold at walmart and they may have suport for a 1080i input but they dont typically advertise these as being 1080i. they may say hd or hd ready. but there usually isnt a sticker claiming 1080 resoulution.
i dont even know how interlaced is handled anymore. samsung, toshiba, and nvidia call 1080i that. i dont think it really has a place in todays displays or cameras.
well if the infuse from rogers does 1080p recording then that would be amazing. does rogers have a release schedule?
1080p will eat sonmuch SD card space and longer to upload on YouTube. But still nice tho

I'm not sure but enabling HQ via youtube, still brings back crappy video quality.
I know youtube compresses data, and that's why its kinda blocky, but on my iPod touch 4th gen, the same video will look amazing!! It looks like on iOS they are using the 1080p or 720p videos if available whereas on my sensation it looks like they use 360p videos. I hate that.
It does on netflix. it optimize the stream base on your connection but I don't think it is 720p or 1080p. Probably need better software support not really the hardware fault.
Its all based on the ones providing the video. netflix/youtube have poor quality. but then again youe tube is based on other peoples cameras so if they have a good camera the video will be better. but just because you have a device that supports 1080p doesnt me everything you play will be in that quality. just means if you have a 1080p hd video your device will play it. the video itself may be a little better but not substantially .
It really sucks. Like Hgaara, the same video will look pretty awesome on my iPod touch 4th generation compared to my Sensation. Oh well.

But it's obvious youtube HD pumps out some "optimal" resolution to android phones.

I've answered my own question with a bit of experimentation
here is my test video if you'd like to try to duplicate my efforts
the video is 720p
This is all on the Sensation of course:
First I watched it using the youtube ap
Then I watched it on youtube's webpage using Dolphin HD in desktop mode.
the video quality is amazingly better. Pretty crisp and smooth in fact.
So the lesson is: for better video quality on youtube,
don't use the ap.
don't browse YouTube in mobile mode
DO use desktop mode (Easily done in Dolphin HD)
DO remember to select a higher resolution. Use 1080p if available because the Sensation does a much smoother job of displaying 1080p on qhd rather than 720p because of the perfect 4 pixel to 1 ratio between 1080p and qHD
You might get a warning from youtube that the video is not optimized for mobile, but trust me, our beast of a phone can handle it.
Anyone who's got the phone yet tested if the One S outputs 720p through HDMI?
It's basically the only thing I can't find, I did however find that the One X does, but it has got a 720p screen itself.

I have connected the one S to my sony HD TV.
the result is a bit disappointing for two reasons:
quality is not so good
latency for example when slide photos is high
I'm using a MHL cable from PNY:
PNY Adaptateur MHL (Mobile High-Definition Link) vers HDMI®
supposed to be compatible up to 1080p.
I didn't check yet the format resulting from TV point of view. I will try to find that and tell you.
For photos on TV, the Sony and HTC integrated DLNA is far better but not working all the time(seems that the TV is not visible as DLNA client all the time)
Bonus question: Is there a difference from using an MHL-adapter og the wireless dlna thingy?
Probably more lag with the wireless. Its not the best i've used it on 1080p and 720p, I think its outputting the native resolution of the phone.

Yeah I thought it could do that too, and the reports of lag when outputting is kinda strange. It should be fast enough at half of full hd..
I have tested again MHL after upgrading to 2.21. Now scrolling in the gallery is smooth and videos are read in full 1080p(recognized by the tv).
I even have tested games, it's awesome!

Stick with 1080 in my opinion. 4k is still being adopted and chances are you don't even have a 4k display. There is no point in recording in a resolution that you don't have a display for due to its larger size in recording 4k

I don't think there'll be 4K on phones for awhile, 1440p has yet to be adopted with the exception of G3. Technology is always changing and it seems like you've already made your decision so why ask? Use 4K if u want, its up to you honestly.
By the way you're speaking about technology becoming old, by the time your son grows up 4K will become obsolete and another standard will be the standard. 4K prices are still very expensive and is not as mainstream as 1080p as it'll take time to adopt.

I could be wrong but I believe uhd is 30fps and DCI is 24fps. So for highest quality, choose uhd.

4k on 1080p TV's will look sharper (in a sense) as the picture is scaled to 1/4.
If the phone had true 1080p @60fps with sound, then that would be the best recording format..

This is exactly how I see it. However I'm still recording in 1080p. Most of the stuff I film isn't worth storing, so 1080p is fine.
If I would go for 4k I would choose UHD as this is the standard for TV. DCI is true 4k but only used for cinematic recording, so I guess this means black borders on your 4k TV.
At least this is how I understood it, it does not mean it's right [emoji317]

I see a lot of people saying the same but for the life of me I just can't understand why. In the future when you have a UHD TV would you not want to see your recordings in UHD instead of HD?
I don't have a UHD TV yet but I do have a 4k TV but I would always record in the highest quality I can.
Btw, right now UHD seems to be broken.

Strictly resolution wise I see no difference. You may see other differences in terms of brightness and color reproduction but you can get that on newer or higher end 1080p displays.
BTW, the article was updated in May 2014.
