I'm trying to take some pics of jewelry I want to sell on ebay. The only camera I have is on the Sensation. I try to auto focus, it gets clear for a split sec, then it goes back to blurry when I take the pic. I've tried tapping on the focus box on the screen before I take the pic & the same thing happens. Any suggestions?
Have you tried changing the scene to CLOSE-UP?

I have the same issue...I have to tap the screen and then it focuses in and goes right back blurry. Really odd. Played with the settings and got nothing. It's only when it's close pics.
Did a hard reset and that fixed it.

That's seems odd. Didn't you just get a replacement phone? If so, does that mean replacement phones are being shipped with a corrupted version of the base SW? Is this evidence that it is a good idea to do a factory reset on a new phone?
Yep, of course I activated close up mode. And various other modes. All have the same issue. It's also interesting that y'all are mentioning replacement phones, because this is a replacement that I got last week!
Here's my fix based on my observations.
When taking a close up picture, focus the camera to the image with a little distance then slowly move closely.
Works for me everytime. Lol

I must just have a bad one because my shots don't come out like that no matter what I try. I'll try the factory reset route, I guess.
First things first. This isn't a real camera (you know what I mean) so make sure there is plenty of light, and make sure there is something there for it to focus on. This uses contrast based focusing, and if it can't see a solid, line, dot, pattern, or something you're going to have trouble.
How close is close? I just pulled out a tape measure and did some tests. It can't focus on things closer than 2 3/4 inches (6.5centimeters). Just to be safe try to move the camera back at least to 3 inches for the best chance at focusing.
Lastly, are you letting the camera decide where to focus or are you tapping on the screen to select a focus point?
As Paging said, most important thing is a lot of light.

Yes, again, in the Sensation it's called "close up mode" & I've been using that. Also, again, it DOES focus correctly for a split second, then "snaps" back to the blurry shot. Like it over focuses so much it becomes blurry again, if that makes sense.

I actually started playing around w/ this advice some more. After some finnagling (sp) I got it to work a LOT better than it had been. It's still not GREAT, but it's so much better than the blurry pics I was getting. I can even hold the camera CLOSER than where I was starting from, as long as I start from farther away & slowly bring the phone closer. Thanks!
New device arrived today. Just left Musiq Soulchild concert and the camera is GREAT!

same
Same problem here. The camera just refuses to focus on close up objects.
Tried with autofocus and manual focus. No change. Any other ideas or is a factory reset really necessary ?
Same problem. At some distances it nearly always fails to set the focus correctly. It over and under focuses, but settles on a position that's out of focus. You can tell it's capable of focusing at that specific distance because it passes through the focus point, but it just fails to hold it. Starting farther away and moving closer does help, but it still seems like you're not getting as close as the lens is capable of.
If you don't actually have the phone and are trying to give generic camera advice, don't. It's annoying.
I'd suggest everyone actually having the issue contact HTC. The more complaints the more likely a fix.

hi guys,
I'm an android no0b ... soon fix that problem though.
anyway here is my situation and question:
Does the phones with the 'Bad Screen Issue' take the same quality pics as the ones with the Good screen
I love to take pics... my old nokia 3.15mb cellphone take great shot, I simply love cellphone that take great pics... but
I might be getting a used a mytouch4g (rooted still on froyo) [decent enough price (well as decent as living in Jamaica goes) ]
and from the first day that I saw the the phone I commented "oh i thought it would be nicer... the screen looks so bland... washed out"
the owner didnt even realize that it look bland, and said that its just looks that way , it doesnt affect the camera/pic quality.
I played around with it for a few minutes... my first experience with an android device... I AM IN LOVE WITH ANDROID NOW. but I still could not get around how bland the screen showed..
he only had it for a week before and didnt have much experience with android either.. he got it from someone b4 ... and all he knew is that its rooted.
I really like this device, and checked around online and was shocked to find out about the 'BAD SCREEN ISSUE' , and first i say some comments where persons said that they first say it after the rooted their device and a some1 even said that the unrooted their phone and the issue went away..
but that to this forum and youtube and realized that is a real hardware issue literally a 'BAD SCREEN' most like TFT vs a SuperLcd issue. ( right ?)
I still purchase it from him, and i said the the price is pretty sweet...
i know only know two person who own the mytouch/glacier and I asked them to send me a sample of pics that they took with their phone... just to compare camera quality. In fat hey did n't even know about the BAD screen issue (fortunately for them their devices are ok) ...
I took some pics with the one that i would be getting and I must say I am disappointed ... the pic when send to my pc looks just as washed out and bland as on the phone screen. i seriously doubted that the screen would affect the camera quality.. i may be wrong though.
I am not considering not to buy it... just because of the bright/washed out screen... but it not likely that i'm getting another decent Android phone for any where near this price again.
So guys I'm asking
.1) Does the phones with the 'Bad Screen Issue' take the same quality pics as the ones with the Good screen
.2) (if the forum allows it) some of your guys with the 'bad screen" phones upload your pics so i and have a better judgement of the camera quality. Prolly the camers secsors are determined by th e screen output (?)
.3) If u think that think that unrooting/rerooting will help the camera issue ( yeah unlikey )
4) If updated the android build / ginger bread or cm7 or so would improve the camera quality.
thanks in advance.

sadly I can not answer that question, as:
1) I did not check (dont know how to as yet), I am assuming that it at its default setting
2) the phone is not currently in my possession ( prolly not for the next two days) .
once again thanks
The menu button (second hard button from the left) will bring up settings. Check Resolution. I've noticed that pictures in lower light aren't too great. Remember though, its a phone with a camera. The camera is, at most, second.

The LCD panel and the camera picture quality are not related. The good/bad screens basically refer to the two vendors HTC sourced for the MT4G's LCD, with the good one being the Sony S-LCD and the bad one being manufactured by Sharp. The differences between the screens lie in their contrast, color rendering, and off-axis viewing angles. There are some theories that the differences are not actually caused by the screen, but rather by the digitizer, but unless the digitizer was replaced, the screen and digitizer seem to go hand in hand.
The camera on the MT4G simply isn't that good. Unlike the camera for the Amaze, I've never read of an editable image compression setting for the MT4G's camera, so I'm inclined to believe that one doesn't exist.

One good.one bad.
I have to say the cm7 camera from tdj's 12/30/11 cm7 Kang took some great pictures.
I tested every camera option available(alot of basketball/baseball games),and for some reason that Kang was the best as far as cameras.
Should it have been different? I do.t know why! Cant explain it!
Those pictures were crisp and clear.
I sure I posted a pic in that thread to check it for sure.right around new years.
Found the picture.posted it above.
On both phones the camera was super bad.

I was not impressed with the quality of the pictures from the MT4G before it died. The outdoor pictures in daylight still had significant compression artifacts, soft focus, and undersaturation. Not natural saturation. Undersaturation. Blacks weren't black. Indoor pictures with incandescent lighting were just dreadful. Honestly, the picture quality was comparable to my Motorola RAZR2 V9x with an extra three megapixels.

Just put this together on the Macrumors board. Even they seem to agree
iPhone 5 pictures will always be first in the series:
In these pictures you can see the iPhone 5s purple flare at the top. No matter how I tried to take the picture, it was always there. In a room with a lot of lights, its just going to happen sadly. The GS3 performed better here and more accurately.

Next up - Tennis ball. The tennis ball is not new, however, judging by the iPhone 5 picture, Apple wants to make old objects new again. Also, the counter top I am taking these on has a purpleish tint to it, so keep that in mind:
Anyone up for some coffee? The letters on dunkin should be a darker shade or orange to your eyes.. lets see how they did:
Next up - same ball, with flash:
Last but not least - a set of 2 outdoor pictures
So what do you think?? Which one is better to you?
Also a side note on the outdoors pictures - Both sets were taken at the same distance. The GS3 appears to get more in the picture than the iPhone... maybe its my eyes playing tricks on me - neither phone's zoom settings were touched.

Maybe the iphone is set to like 28mm while the S3 at 24mm (when compared on 35mm?)
I don't get how you guys are getting decent shots with the GS3. My pictures are just awful and almost always blurry in identical situations that my Rezound and iPhone are able to take excellent photos. I really hate the camera on this phone.
Maybe you dont have a steady hand? Turn anti-shake on?

Make sure the camera lens cover isn't smudged. If mine is, pictures look terrible, but if I wipe it off with my shirt and then take picture, it looks so much better.
Maybe. But it doesn't happen with any other camera, if that's the problem my hands would be shaky no matter what.
Quick and dirty comparison I did just now.

I love the pics on mine..Here is a sample of my lake house view from the back deck:
As you see it takes great pics..
My S3 takes both good and bad pictures. If I am holding it in just my hands, it usually takes not so good pictures. But when I us4 something solid to prop it against, it takes great pictures. But, that is the least of my gripes with this thing.
I just flashed the latest ROM five minuets ago and am finally getting thirty hours of battery time! This is sick!!
I take some okay pics

Nice picture and interesting landscaping - curious about the choice of what appears to be a birdbath in the center: that green expanse to the lake might appear even more like a welcoming path or inviting runway there without the visual breakup, I figure.

Honestly I think the iPhone 5 takes better pictures.
I have 2 lines on my plan...mine with my GS3 and the other person on my plan has an iPhone 5. I did my own comparison tests and found the iPhone 5 camera to be better every time. I love my GS3 and the camera is alright but... nothing beats my DSLR.
The S3 also seems to be really sensitive with shaky hands compared to my old Apple. This can easily cause blurrier pictures. Also, another thing is phone covers can really alter the flash...... I had to learn this this the hard way.
Good stuff here... Honestly to me both seem to be amazing cameras but it's nice to see there are significant differences. Maybe I'm bias

One thing I noticed with the iPhone is it gets surrounding detail a bit better, but its not as focused. On the iPhone I can focus on someone 15 feet away, but still read a paper that is in the photo just under the camera. On the GS3 it appears to overexpose it, and makes it illegible. Ill do a bit more testing, but it might only be an issue with white paper
I'm impressed with the macro on the S3

I think the iphone is always easier to take good pics with (for a phone anyway) for some reason.
You can hand an iphone to anybody, leave everything in the auto mode & most of their pics will be fine.
As far as the DSLR comment, I agree 100%, I am a pro photographer & I use a *Canon EOS 1D Mark 2/with all L lens* all day at work.

Your focus is on your keys that's why only your keys look clear and everything else is blurry. Try focusing it something else, like the middle of the screen. Auto focus does that to me sometimes. Nothing a good finger poke on the screen doesn't fix.
OK so im coming from a long line of iPhones and after getting bored of iOS this is my first venture into Samsung. I took this photo at the club I work at last night and seriously, what is going on here? The flash pics were pretty crap too, finding it very hard to focus after pressing the shutter.

I also noticed the pictures weren't what I expected.
They tend to blur quite easily.
I'm hoping a software update will sort it.
It's a 13MP camera, you're either doing something wrong or your camera is bad.

I agree with the poster, ive had many phones and by far the note 3 has the worst photo quality ever, im really dissapointed for a ~750 euro device to have such a bad camera. 13MP looks nice in the specs but numbers is not everything.
To me it looks like there is some kind compression on the image, maybe the firmware has some kind of compression method to keep the camera up to speed for zero shutter lag.
Hope samsung will look into this and give us an update in the camera firmware.

What do you expect? The camera has a 1/3" sensor, a FX SLR has ~28 times the sensor area. This means that you would need 28 times the light (or time) to shoot a photo with same quality.
This is not possible because in the conditions where your photo was shot you would need a tripod and long exposure (which is not useable on moving objects) to make a photo which has comparable quality like an outdoor picture!
Anyhow, I have the N3 for one day now and I am happy with it so far, especially with the better camera!

Well it does have to do with the megapixels because the more you have the less the typical blur will be visibly apparent as a result of movement, which seems to be the case here, whether that be movement by you or the subject.

It isnt blur, it's the denoise that samsung is using. This is a software issue, among other things obviously. Whether or not they fix it I have no idea.

Until manufacturers either quit trying to outdo each other with more megapixels on the same size sensor, lower the megapixels on the same size sensor (like HTC did with the One), or increase the sensor size (such as Apple just did with the 5s), low light photos are going to have more and more noise. The smaller the pixel, the less light it captures, which results in worse low light performance.

Interesting is when I press glass back of the phone down and then take photo quality is ok, no yellow problems. By the way I'm wondering how much waterproof wool be my phone hehe. Phone is two weeks old, problem is since beginning and I will send it back for repair. Anybody having similar problem?

Gonna go for the Note edge once its released.
Hi. Just to give more details: issue is with case and without, on any mode with flash. Phone is factory software without any modifications. Pure stock. I'm bit disappointed with quality of the photos. S3 was taking better shots... Maybe whole camera is faulty.
Regards
Mine is similar...any shot at night and especially with flash is unusable. I've tried every setting imaginable.
Phone is faulty. Mine is fine at night with and without flash.

I have the same issue with/without case on. Interestingly macro pictures with flash is fine but landscape pictures are affected. I think it is caused by the reflection of the flash so I used Torch instead of Fill flash for landscape pictures. Of course it is not that good. .

It's ok if you've got a very big torch, or a lot of time.
That is really bad, mine does this very slightly, but only when the phone selects a high ISO. In both these shots you took in the OP, the flash is not really going to do anything, because all objects are well out of the flashes range.
If using superior auto start the shot in the dark as possible part, the will put the camera into low light mode (no flash), then recompose and take your shot. I was amazed with the details I was able to capture doing this in pretty much just moon light. Or you can just use manual mode turn flash off and select a high iso
To the OP take your phone back because this is not right.
Hi All,
I also have the same camera problem when using flash with my D6633. I have noticed that my phone's back cover is kinda loose. I think the glue use to shield the covers in Z3 is not that good. The camera shown good picture when I put pressure on the back cover area around the camera and flash area. I have also taking off the back cover (since mine is already loose) of the phone to test whether it is cause by defected camera or not. Without the back cover the picture also show good picture when shoot with flash at low light condition.
So, I think the problem is cause by the sticker use to shield the back cover of the phone (at least for my case) getting loose. This may cause some light of the flash bounce inside the unit which cause image problem.
If you have this problem and still in warrenty, I would strongly to get it replace. For me, my phone have no warrenty. So, I decided to order the sticker tape from Ebay to replace mine. I am still waiting for my sticker to arrive. I will update here if that solved the problem.
I hope this could help.

Camera shutting down when getting hot?
Hi, I am in south africa. It gets quite hot here in summer. When taking photos on a sunny day using the z3 camera. It warns me in the camera application that it's getting hot and will shut down? only after 5 minutes. Not even using 4k video. So is this normal? anyone else having this problem. If i use a 3rd party camera app I dont get the same issue. Can anyone also comment on what the normal temp is when using the camera and when playing games. With my temp app it got to 65-70 degrees celcius is that normal? Idling is anywhere from 38-48 c%
No issues at all and tried with different mode. Stock kitkat
Btw, users having this issue, which model you have ?

Same issue with my phone when using flash, flash works fine on close up (as in 2nd pic).
I have the same problem... Omg this phone has so many issues.
I dont have any problem with the camera in low light conditions... I think you're unlucky... The phone is corrupt...
P.s first photo is without flash (ISO 12800), second photo with flash,
I think the problem is in the back glass cover. I exchanged my faulty phone with a new one. pictures were fine with or without flash. but after a day back glass got shattered and i started to have the same problem in pictures with flash on. (the crack is in front of flash)
Please do the poll
I have recently had my phone sent in for repair and have received a “fixed phone” which I believe to still be faulty and Samsung do not seem to want to have anything to do with me.
Every time I take a picture in low light, the image will have diagonal streaks where there is a light in the image (see attached images). Bear in mind that I am standing still when taking these photographs.
Samsung have said the following on the photos attached:
“we would not consider these photo's to indicate a fault with the device or camera but instead how the mobile phone camera operates in low/reduced light.”
The samsung presidential office are adamant that the phone is not faulty, hence I have decided to seek a independent opinion from you guys!
So do you believe that this phone is of Samsung quality? (btw my ipod touch takes better low light than these photos!)
Thanks for your time!

As some people have been asking - the film covering the lens have been removed. From physical inspection the lens is in as new condition.
Sample video also showing the low light issue : https://goo.gl/photos/BrLs4KiZG8e9R8Wx7
the camera itself doesn't seem faulty as much as the glass covering it. try cleaning it well before taking any photos

Thanks for the reply - the glass is clean on the outside with no visible scratches.
I think the problem is with the lens - maybe not the camera sensor per say.
Your photos are of unacceptable quality, their is no way that this is the way photo's should come out even in low light. They may be grainy in low light but not what you have shown.
Try to factory reset the phone and see if that yields any better results. If the results are the same then keep pushing Samsung to fix or replace the phone. The images are not representiv of the photos that this phone is capable of taking.

Hello - I completely agree! I have already done a FR, Safe mode & diagnostic mode and all produce these images. Samsung just won't budge.
They tried to pass me off by saying it was due to ISO - incredible for a technical company...
At this point you need to have the phone replaced or repaired. You need to be diligent and keep pushing up the Samsung corporate ladder. You will eventually reach someone who will be able to help.
If there is a consumer afairs agency, or Better Business Bureau contact them also. The more more noise you make the better chance you have of getting your issue resolved.

I have just made an account to comment on this thread. The photos you have uploaded are NOT the quality of a S6. I agree with the others - you need to get this replaced. I would not stand for having a phone with such poor image quality.

After having this phone repaired by Samsung twice before I was fed up so I went straight to the CEO. The CEO passed me off to the "presidential office" aka Sean Archer.
He has been persistant that the phone is of the correct standard. I do not think I can go any higher in Samsung. I am definatly going to go down other pathways if Sean continues.
As I stated, contact consumer affairs agencies in your area, it never hurts to get help from them. Good Luck.

Thanks! I am almost at the point in getting rid of all of my Samsung products. The whole experience has left an extremely sour taste in my mouth.

I had this problem before too. But found it it was a smudge on the glass covering the lens so i cleaned it thoroughly. In your case seems to be hardware issue. Goodluck on you problem and yeah keep us posted.
Looks like an amazing effect. Those photos are beautiful! However, it's faulty lol
Did you take off the plastic covering? Customer service should replace your phone, especially if they want to maintain their footing in this competitive and over saturated market.

The first few photos look quite good, but when EVERY photo has the effect it gets old very quickly! (Good idea re the plastic covering - sadly that was removed long ago :/ )
There is a small glass/screenprotector film applied on both the camera lens as the heartbeat sensor. I think that when you remove the one from the camera lens the pictures will come out just fine

Hi, I removed those films long ago - but thanks! Do you think that my camera lens/sensor has a problem?

Yes, highly possible.
I mean, look at the possibilities here, the camera only gets the visuals through one hole that Is made for the camera. It is not the sensor as the focus and sharpness seems to be intact on most of the picture.
What I would suggest I that one of the lenses on the camera has been dirty or is made of low quality, as the light passing through is being spread instead of concentrated into the spots were it appears.
Why does this happen in low light?
That's because the camera is opening the lens a bit more to be able to take in more light in bad light conditions. The more it opens, the more of the lens it uses.
So this is by looking at the pictures, a pretty dysfunctional camera, and something you should not accept being pushed away about. You're having one of the best phones (In terms of specs) out there, do not tolerate this.
Go hard on Samsung, they have plenty of money, and probably have a hard time being nice towards customers. Keep us updated on your progress and eventually feedbacks from Samsung. I had some bad times about Samsung lately too, so I'm curious.
Good luck!

Should get another s6 and have them both take the same picture in low light and than show Samsung the result. If they still say the phone is good throw it in their face, get an iPhone, take the same pic and show them while rubbing it in their face.
