I have a strange problem with a HTC Touch PRO. Here is my problem:
- I insert the USB cable and the phone asks if I want to use mass storage or activesync
-the phone shows a connection on the screen
-The PC is not sensing anything, the activesync is not connected.
I think this problem appeared after I used a wrong usb cable...
Anyone knows anything what to try? or this is a hardware problem?
Did you select ACTIVESYNC?
There are 2 modes this phone can do..
1) Standard ActiveSYNC or
2) AS a MASS STORAGE DEVICE -like a flash drive...
You have to select ActiveSYNC to actually SYNC software/calendar, else it will show up as just another drive to drag/drop files..
Yes i did it in every way and the computer is not sensing the connection with the phone.
Anyone know what kinf of hardware is responsible for the connection with the pc?

The problem is likely with your operating system on your pc.
You can try things like, un-installing the HTC usb driver in device manager.
Check your firewall.
- allow activesync for trusted
- I know for ZoneAlarm you have to go to the adapters section and set the ipaddress (a new one is created when your phone is hooked up via USB) to be trusted.
If that doesn't fix issue perhaps its a corrupt install of ActiveSync. Try uninstalling and reinstalling.

I've had this happen to me. I've got so many USB to mini-USB cables and they are not all alike.
Sometimes, it would work and sometimes activesync would not recognize it.
CHANGE YOUR CABLE to another. Hopefully, you've labeled the original cable that came with the phone..
(also, look at the mini cable where it plugs into your phone. Make sure there are no loose pins and/or verify that the 'plug' is level.
Try a different USB port
Try unchecking "use advanced network configuration" in Async settings on the phone. Some computers (for various reasons) have a hard time communicating with the phone when it's configured as a network device - unchecking this will often allow Async to find and connect to the phone, at the expense of some other functionality.
coincendentally i am having the same exact issue, it started last night.
i have tried 3 different cords, on all 3 usb ports on my computer. same thing the phone asks what kind of connection i want whether i select disk drive ofr active sync noting happens. whats weird is that the phone is charging when its connected however the computer is not seeing it at all.
i have tried all the recommendations in this thread but nothing is working. anymore help would be greatly apprciated!
Me too I have tryed everything but none is working.
I think that this a hardware problem, and the problem started to happen after i used a non HTC cable, bad quality. I think some kind of controller is dead. So i started to live with that
When I connteced to the PC via USB, my TP also asked me how to connect (AS or as disc). But suddenly it doesn't ask anymore. I had to deactivate "advanced network configuration" to conntect to AS.
The checkbox "ask each time USB connects" is activated.
What can I do that the phone asks again when I connect it?
Thx.
I have the same thing going on... suddenly a few days ago my fuze only charges when I plug it in the desktop with a usb cable... I re-flashed and it worked about halfway through a sync and then started again... I've tried different cables... uninstalled all of the usb drivers, and reinstalled then updated them... Disconnected the power supply... tried every setting on my phone, and in windows.... I've even uninstalled the last batch of windows updates that came out last week... nothing seems to work...
really simple solution.
decheck advanced network config. plug in cable wait till you see usb connected. a small box. after that choose for example activesync
internet share
This happened to me last night and I figured out that after you toggle your internet sharing you can sync up again. Idk why it works out like that but it worked for me.
This sound reasonable, because the last thing I did before was selecting the "internet sharing" option in the menu when you connect to USB.
But what do you mean with "toggle your internet sharing"? Can you please describe it.
Thx.
try this
okay - first see if you're getting an active connection with your pc , not from the network connections window, but by running mymobiler. I was getting a connection through mymobiler, but active sync wasn't recognizing the device. If mymobiler works, Call your phone. it will drop your connection with mymobiler when you answer the call. then hang up the phone call. (all the while leaving your cable plugged into your phone. When the call has been disconnected your activesync will recognize the connection and sync up again. I don't know why this works, but I've been able to duplicate the results several times.
Same htc ****+ wm. Bought an iphone 3g. Everything must be tuned in windows mobile! It doesn't work how it should!
None of this seems to be working... I've even flashed new roms and it stops working halfway through the sync... it doesn't even appear as though windows recognizes the device... it makes no noise or pop-up when I connect it...
Still charges though... Don't know what is going on...
Reinstall Mobile Device Manager!

I've experienced this issue multiple times, as I use my TP to sync with many stations. The solution is way more simple than you think and it has nothing to do with cables!.
You probably use Win Vista so all you need is to uninstall "Windows Mobile Device Center", restart the PC and install a fresh copy from MS site.
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=83D513EA-9DF9-4920-AF33-3A0E2E4E7BEB&displaylang=en
If you're on XP, do the same with the Active sync solution for XP.
Good luck!
yeah this happens to me every now and then. the advanced network configuration option really helps, but sometimes i just need to plugin/unplug the usb cable from teh phone/cable or cable/computer a couple more timesbefore it picks it up...
goodluck!
So I got my shiny new LG Incite at Best Buy yesterday. I knew I was getting it a while ago, so I downloaded a bunch of games and apps to load it up with as soon as possible. I get home from the store, play around with it and let it charge for a while, then I try to connect it to my computer (After installing ActiveSync 4.5 from the included disk, as well as both of the USB drivers on the disk). Windows comes up with that "found new hardware" stuff and asks where to look for the driver to install. I tell it to look on the CD, as well as the directories where the USB drivers from the disk were installed. It looks like it's working at first, but then I get this error:
(Error: "The data is invalid.")
Then it gives me the message balloon about how there was an error during installation and my new hardware may not work properly, etc. Now when I go to Device Manager, a number of things showed up with that little yellow exclamation point that I'm pretty sure were not there before, but I could be wrong:
- IEEE 1394 Bus host controllers: VIA OHCI Compliant IEEE 1394 Host Controller
- Network Adapters: Unknown device, WAN miniport (L2TP), WAN miniport (Network Monitor), and Windows Mobile-based Device
- Ports (COM & LPT): Communications Port (COM1)
So I tried reinstalling the drivers from a link I found in a thread on these boards (after clicking uninstall for "Windows Mobile-based Device" and having it tell me that the device is necessary to boot up the computer), but the same thing keeps happening. I also tried having ActiveSync scan for devices, but it never finds anything (Just says that USB is "available").
Please help, I really want to start putting pictures, music, and all that good stuff on my brand new phone
(btw, I'm pretty sure the problem is with the software/drivers on the computer, because when I plug in the USB cable the phone starts to charge. Other than that, nothing happens on the phone.)
If at all possible, I would try using the phone with another computer. For quite some time I was only able to sync data with my laptop and not my desktop, so I knew it was a software issue and not the phone itself.
would say it's down to
dead activesync install and no uninstalling it is not enough one have
to remove all traces of it in registry too
and it could also be an issue with usb drviers for the motherboard

Well, I'm not going to have another computer until September at least, so I really want to get it working on this computer, but I guess I could test it out on a friend's pc to see if my computer is the problem.

Know of any links or tutorials that would tell me all of the registry entries I'd have to remove?
(Sorry for the double post, but no one was replying...)
So I found my bluetooth adapter for my PC, and after I installed the proper software I could connect to my phone no problem. After that, I just used the bluetooth adapter's software to transfer files to my phone via FTP. (ActiveSync still just sat there, even when I set my phone to sync with bluetooth instead of USB, and I allowed wireless connections in ActiveSync)
So I'm glad I can finally transfer files, but I still want to get USB working. No one has any ideas at all?
(Triple post... sorry)
Ok, something happened to the bluetooth drivers and software now. I turned my computer off for the night after using bluetooth to transfer files to my phone, but when I turned on my pc today and clicked the shortcut to start the bluetooth software, I got a message saying that the program the shortcut was linking to no longer existed. Sure enough, the folder was gone from my Program Files directory. Now, every time I try to reinstall it, I get an error 183 that installation was interrupted.
So now I'm back to having no means of transferring files to my phone.
Please, any suggestions at all will be helpful to me at this point. I'm at my wits end!
Any progress on this?
I have a similar problem. I think usb sync worked on my laptop at one point, but hasn't for at least a week.
I was able to fix the problem at least temporarily by disconnecting the device, deleting it from ActiveSync and reconnecting. ActiveSync happily added it back and resynced everything. Now I can install the new Xcite ROM.
Still nothing...
Now my computer doesn't do anything at all when I plug my phone in, not even make a noise or ask about drivers. My phone, however, still recognizes that it's plugged in.
At least I got bluetooth working again, but still, USB would be nice.
It's hard to believe that out of every member on this forum, no one has even the slightest idea of where to start...
Menu - settings - connections - USB to PC.
Uncheck Enable advanced ...
OK TO ALL AND READY
I have the Zune software on my Windows XP computer, and a Zune account set up. When I connect my Samsung Focus to the computer, Zune does not see it as a connected device. I am using the USB cable that came with the phone, and I use that same USB port to connect my iPod without any problem.
Any suggestions?
Not sure if this'll help, but have you created a Live account on your phone, that matches the same one on Zune?
What version of Zune are you running? (Need 4.7) Are you getting audio feedback from XP that a device was connected? Do you see a power plug over the battery icon on your Focus?
My WP7 phone was only trickle charging until I used a different cable. If you just installed Zune 4.7 and the cable checks out... Reboot!

I have a Live account, don't know about creating a Live account on my phone.
I don't have an XP computer myself to test on, but the only time Zune didn't see my Focus was when the focus was stuck (marketplace app crashed) - have you tried power cycling your phone and re-connecting?

I have a Live account on live.com under my name. In the Zune software, my name is the same and then I have a Zune tag, which is different than my live.com login name. I don't have a Zune Pass because I don't want to spend any money on Zune.
I have rebooted my computer and restarted by Focus, and still Zune does not recognize any device connected to the computer even though my Focus is connected and indicates that it is charging, so I know it's connected.

I can't find what version of Zune I am running, but I didn't download and install it to my computer until after I bought the Focus, so I assume it must be current. And yes, I do see the power plug over the battery icon, so I know the Focus is connected to the computer and charging, but Zune still doesn't see it as a connected device.
do you have xp sp3?
I think that is a requirement.
Anyways, if so, I would probably uninstall zune and reinstall.
I have xp and it didn't have any problems auto installing the drivers for my hd7 and connecting.
OK, I uninstalled and downloaded Zune again, and it still does not recognize my Focus as being connected.
Is there some setting on the Focus I'm supposed to adjust to allow it to be recognized by Zune?
im having this same problem. my phone was syncing up perfectly yesterday but now zune isn't recognizing my device
I had the same exact problem when I first got my Panther. It may sound silly but have you tried restarting your Focus? My wouldn't connect and once I restarted it, it connected with no problem.
I've tried multiple USB cords, deleting and reinstalling Zune on my desktop, turning my Focus off and on, and still the Zune program does not recognize any device as being connected, even though Windows sees a Windows Phone 7 as being connected and my Focus is getting powered.
Not being able to sync/connect to Zune seems like it will be a big handicap for this phone, so don't know if I will be able to keep it.
OK, it's now working for me. I think the problem was that I was using the extra USB connectors/chargers that I bought at the AT&T store. Just now I connected the Focus using the Samsung cord that came with the Focus, and my computer loaded drivers and Zune recognized the device.

that is weird. I rarely use original cords, think I'm using my camera's usb cord right now, and I've never had that problem. I hope samsung hasn't put some proprietary thing in the usb to make it the only one that will work (ala apple)
Same problem here. My Samsung Focus was syncing up fine the last time i connected to Zune. Now it will not recognize the device. My computer recognizes the phone and charges it just fine.
Zune doesn't recognize my WP7 via USB
I've been experiencing this issue now for a couple of weeks. I have hard reset it, reformatted it, and reboot every associated PC, and even tried different cables. Its as if the USB driver stored on the device has been deleted or corrupted. As with other users, my phone will charge when connected to the PC via USB, but Zune doesn't see it, and device manager doesn't see it anymore either. I even tried uninstalling the driver entry for it on one PC under device manager, in hopes that would force it to reinstall the correct driver, but no luck. Now it just doesn't exist.
I stopped in at an ATT store today and they don't even have a Zune workstation set up to test WP7 phones. Go figure.

Hi All,
maybe this can help you ...
Launch your Samsung Focus’ dialer, and key-in ##634#. Press the call button, and you will reach the phone’s Diagnosis menu. Using that, enter *#7284# and a dialog box will appear, presenting you with the option to change the setting for USB (Zune to modem or ‘Modem, USB dialog’)
thank me if it worked

I have been trying this but for some reason I dont get a grey screen. Is there any other way?
UPDATE: So I got the dialog box, but I am still not able to connect. It would seem that the drivers are not recognized. i tried almost every file outhere, no luck. Any other suggestions? am on Windows 7 x64
I just realized that when i do the change above and it prompt for the reboot, after the reboot I check it and it goes back to zune. Should I be doing something else
Well I am having the same problem with my LG Optimus Quantum.
Using the factory USB cable, newest version of zune, etc etc. I have had my phone since launch, but yesterday bought my wife the same phone and hers DOES get recognized by zune. This is seriously pissing me off.
ADD: The PC itself seems to be recognizing the phone, as I have the "Your Device is ready to use" window, with ready to use beside USB Composite Device, LG LG-C900B, and Windows Phone USB
I am perplexed.
2nd ADD: SOLVED. I had to do a hard reset, which sucks because I had pictures on the phone but couldn't sync to save them, and the skydrive option was messing up too. But it is now being recognized by zune at least.
Hey there,
I'm having issues trying to sync my phone with my computer. When I connect my phone, nothing happens, Zune doesn't launch, and when I open it, it doesn't show my device as connected. I've tried everything I can think of, different USB ports, rebooting both the phone and my pc. I'm running windows 7 64 bit, and it was working before. Anyone know what's going on?
Thanks for the help!
p.s. I tried uninstalling the drivers for the device, and upon reinstall my computer said it was installing drivers for "Microsoft USB Sync" thought that was weird...
try making it forget your device (don't have your phone plugged in). to do this, click on the phone icon in the bottom left of zune, click view sync options, and then on that screen click forget device.
after this, try and connect it again.
Didn't work, i plug my phone in, and Zune still says I have no device connected
does your computer make it's sound when you connect the phone (device detected sound)? if not, you might need to reset your phone (settings > about > reset phone). if yes, does it show the eject icon in the notification area (system tray)?
yes, it makes the sound, and yes it shows the eject icon... this is very odd
I had this problem too. When i went to the Device Manager, it showed unknown device when i plugged my phone in using the USB cable.
Here is what I did (Windows 7). If you see an unknown device, right click it and select Update Driver Software. Click Browse my computer for driver software, then click Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer. Then click on the Have Disk button, then browse to C:\Program Files\Zune\Drivers\Zune and select WMZuneSerUSB.inf. Then select Windows Phone 7. Hit Next and you should now see your Unknown Device show up as either Windows Phone or the name of your phone under Portable Devices in the Device Manager.
Actually, I forget if it is WMZuneSerUSB.inf or Zune.inf, so you'll need to try both.
Hope this helps.

Did you perhaps use the hidden Tethering feature? If so, then change that option back to "Zune sync" and you're done. It is not possible to use your phone for Zune sync and tethering at the same time, for now.

Dial ##634# to go to "Diagnostic mode"
Then enter *#7284# to go to "Micro USB Test"
You then have 3 options to choose: "Zune Sync" (default), "Modem, Tethered Call" and "Modem, USB Diag". Change it back to "Zune Sync" and you'll be able to connect with Zune on your PC.
Anyone else having this problem? Zune doesn't recognize my WP7 phone on a laptop with Win 7 x64, but same phone+cable works on a laptop with WinXP
The Win 7x64 laptop does connect to the phone - I tried the above tethering change and was able to pull files from my WP7 storage - but when I switch it back to Zune synch it doesn't work.

Is this specific to Samsung models? I can't get to the micro USB test on my lg optimus
EDIT: Problem solved, I had to switch back to MS COMPOSITE, and now it works fine.
Hmm yeah I have this issue on my HD7 with my PC running Win7 x64.
The phone connects fine on both ends (sound on both, phone charging, shows up in Device Manager as HTC HD7), but the desktop Zune software often does not show it as being connected. Restarting the phone and PC generally doesn't help-- just have to wait a few days until they start syncing again.
The sync setup seems really flaky (like the earlier days of ActiveSync).

Are you using virtualisation software? It's USB arbitrator modules for forwarding devices might have messed up things. This happened over here before with VirtualBox.
Exact same problem with Win7 Ultimate x64. Device manager saw my phone but zune would not.
I did the steps above to change my phone to usb tether, rebooted, then back to zune zync, rebooted, and now the zune sees my phone.
Thanks for the help.
Phone: Samsung Omnia 7
OS: Windows 7 SP1
Sync through USB: fast and flawless
Phone connected through AC charger and wireless sync was setup without problem with the zune desktop software.
I am using zunedevices.exe tool to sniff for pings and stuff.
Actually, the phone appears as a network location under "other devices" with the name WindowsPhone:nameIgaveit but it doesn't appear to install any wireless driver (that should install, as far as successful syncs i have been reading about here)
Why do i want this so bad? because zune (music+video app) play counts does not update my zune card on zune.net. And I read somewhere that the device sends the playcounts when its plugged in AC and syncing wirelessly.
Already spent a good chunk of my weekend on this. Some help please?
I had a problem where plays on the device wouldn't have an affect on the play count in my local zune database or the zune social. It didn't work for a while, it started working, I hard reset and it stopped working again.
Anyway, I eventually used the Zune Media Collection Reset Tool and it has worked great since then. It will wipe out your current local playcounts though.
i tried what you suggested but it still doesn't work.
like i said, my phone registers as a upnp device, my computer just doesn't install the drivers for it. which is weird because in the same network but with my laptop, it does and it syncs wirelessly for me. :-s
EDIT: As my suspicion that my problem is caused by a conflict with another program/service grows, i went ahead and re-installed my OS. (i had so many installed programs, it's easier to just wipe completely as i didn't mind really) it works now! although i must say, play counts still does not move forward if i play through the music+video hub in the phone. hmmmmnn...
