Free memory and future OS updates - T-Mobile LG G2x

Hey guys just wondering what you guys think the longevity will be on the 2x considering it has a paltry 512mb of ram. Do you think 512mb will be enough to run ice cream smoothly? It's a shame to have this device with such awesome hardware all around but skimming on ram. I'm hoping we will see ice cream without issues. Thoughts?

Ice cream? Last update we will probably get, will be official gb.
Sent from my LG-P999

I think that we'll at least see a port of ice cream sandwich, although the memory really limits the possibility of a smooth running OS given all the supposed features of it

i dont think 512mb ram is going to be a barrier for Ice cream honeycomb runs fine on 512mb.

It'll work on 512MB of ram.
I think GPU on older handsets will not like it when ICS comes out. G2x users will be just fine.

Cool good to know. Thanks for replies. It really is a shame LG limited the memory this devices hardware could go past ice cream if not for the memory limit. Of course that's what they want, us to keep buying!!!

The Nexus S will get IceCream, and thus we will too. Tegra2 seems to be the hit marker. All of the tablets are Tegras and phones too. So we will be supported even if we don't get it officially.
The point of IceCream is to merge the Tablet and Phone paths into one (auto-sensing screen resolutions and more GPU acceleration).
Supposedly IceCream is 2.4 but tablets wouldn't move in that direction... unless they have IceCream 2.4 as a stepping stone and have 4.0 (JellyBean?)

[Q] Transformer to get Ice Cream Sandwich by years end?

I just ordered the eee pad from newegg...got the UPS tracking number today. Anyway...I would assume it would be fairly easy to upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich when it comes out, hopefully by ASUS pushing it out, or by rooting and putting the ROM on yourself. Probably getting ahead of myself here, since 3.1 isn't even here yet, but I just don't want a tablet that has outdated software in 4 months.
Now, need to sell my OG iPad. Craigslist I guess, ebay fees have gotten outrageous.

I sold my ipad on eBay but that's only because my city isn't big enough so no one would buy it. Is "ice cream sandwich" referring to 3.1? If so, Asus already made an official announcement that the TF will get it in June

Ice Cream Sandwich is the version after Honeycomb, so it will actually come after 3.1. It is supposed to get rid of the "fragmentation" issue with android and make it easier for developers. Shoot, I wonder if I get the HTC Evo 3D, if I will be able to get Ice Cream Sandwich on that down the road. It's supposed to work on both phones and tablets.

3.1 got released what a week ago? Hold your horses kid.
Anyways Asus announced that they were working on 3.1 the day after 3.1 got released, they said expect it within a month.
So I really doubt icecream sandwhich will take 4 months.
I know I'm getting ahead of myself, but I was just more curious if ASUS was proactive on pushing updates out. Sounds like they are. I just don't want to have to purchase a new tablet in say 6-7 months if they decide not to upgrade this model.

No, Ice Cream Sandwich is the unification of tablet-Android and traditional phone-Android. It's meant to be used by both.

yea, this is my understanding as well. and it's version is 2.4 (after gingerbread, 2.3)
http://www.pcworld.com/article/216558/android_24_ice_cream_details_drip.html
it is meant to bring some honeycomb goodness into the phone version. so for the TF to get ice cream sandwich would be a downgrade.

2.4 if it exists willvstill be gingerbread. Ice cream sandwich will most likely be 4.0 and will run on phones, tablets and google tv.
Ice Cream Sandwich, unlike Honeycomb, will be open source. So we'll definitely see it on the TF one way or another.
okay so most of you guys don't know what your talking about let me explain.
Phones: Gingerbread 2.3
GoogleTV: Custom Froyo 2.2
Tablets: Honeycomb 3.0.1/3.1.
3.1 is a honeycomb update that adds a few features and improvements.
Gingerbread 2.3 is the last version of the phone only android.
Ice Cream Sandwich, which will most likely be 4.0 but at least something greater than 3.1 combines Phones, GoogleTV, and Tablets all into one OS.
With Ice Cream Sandwich, all devices will be running the same version of android.
It will come out this holiday first and according to google most current gen devices will get it. There is no reason why the transformer won't get ICS this holiday.

I did some research and I guess I didn't know what I was talking about, but my thing was if it was going to be on a phone wouldn't it have a phone interface. Why would you want a phone interface on your tablet? I think they are going to accomplish this by having different interfaces on different LCD densities as shown here:
http://phandroid.com/2011/05/20/set...y-above-160-get-a-taste-of-gingerbread-video/
I am in no way an Android/coding expert but this is the only way that makes sense.

With ICS the honeycomb UI is being redesigned for the phones.
On tablets ICS will probably look identical to honeycomb just like eclair through gingerbread didn't change much other than images.
But on phones, it'll be a complete redesign of the android UI taking the honeycomb holographic UI and bringing it over to phones.

Two things to consider here:
1. The Launcher - this can be different across different devices if Google wish, because this is essentially just an application.
2. Fragment support - probably the biggest single addition to Honeycomb is the addition of fragments. Effectively this introduces a single consistent API for multi-paned applications (think Honeycombs Gmail etc). Essentially, an application can decide what fragments a particular device can display and adjust its UI accordingly, so there's no need for a tablet and phone version of a particular application.
Ice Cream Sandwich is effectively the unification of Honeycomb and Gingerbread effectively, and will allow the same OS to serve up a different UI and experience between different classes of device.
Regards,
Dave
This will presumably put android on a similar basis as Apple's IOS which is used on iphones and ipads

Not exactly! If anything, it puts it ahead of iOS because it should allow for tablet apps to run on a phone, and vice versa.

True, and you can see now on honeycomb that if you change the LCD density (to show a more dense screen such as a phone) the Gingerbread Interface because default on a reboot.
the biggest thing i've seen and this is what makes it better then the ios is the fact that games that are ment for a phone will properly scale for tablets where as games that are on the iphone that aren't ment for the ipad look grainy at the very least so this will give a lot more freedom when coming to cross platforming

[Q] Desire S or Optimus 2X. Which to buy ?

Yes, I went through this post. Here are my requirements in order
Good battery life
Future Updates
Camera
Application running stability
OS Stability
I dont want to spend much so Samsung Galaxy S2 or HTC Sensation is out of the picture. Spec wise I found the following
DS has 1GHz Snapdragon, O2X has 1GHz dual core Tegra 2
DS has 768MB RAM, O2X has 512MB RAM
DS fits my pocket perfectly, O2X is litle bigger
DS comes with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, O2X is pushing updates release further and further
DS looks fairly stable, O2X is buggy. Need a comparison of O2X with CM and DS stock ROM
What I am looking for is when Google releases Android 2.4 Ice cream Sandwich some time in Q4, I want to have it on my phone ASAP. If LG is taking so long to release GB updates I wonder how long will they take for Ice Cream Sandwich. I am a light user. Few calls, few messages, occasional gaming, occasional photography, occasional WiFi but a lot of music and apps. Which device do you think I should go for ? I am looking all this from Ice Cream Sandwich point of view. I dont want my phone to be obsolete by Q1 next year.

That is what is preventing me from buying it. If only they had released the upgrade and it was better ! How does it look with latest CM ? On the other hand Sense 3.0 wont be completely supported on Desire S so it'l probably be last to get Ice Cream Sandwich.

Bored, are we? Why speculate on something that may or may not see the light of day for the G2x - I doubt the phone will still be in use when Android 10000.9 hits.
Gingerbread just hit and its not even a final release. Lets get GB 100% before we start *****ing and complaining about it not being able to boil water and pleasure the hamsters.
...on another note, I still await the day Android has half the media codex as Windows Mobile. I miss CorePlayer. These crappy media players for Android are a real let down.
Im actually pretty sure that Icecream sandwich will come to our phone through CyanogenMod 8. CM7 was supported on this phone pretty much from the get go and I doubt they would drop support so quickly.

I am sure! I have GB running, and it seems to be running well. No problems installing, no other problems found so far.
Wish I could Skype with the cameras, but that is about all of my annoyances. Very happy with the phone, very happy with the GB OS. There maybe an update that makes it even better, but still...... ICS seems to be in our future!

yep, I'm always thinking about what a complete waste this phone really is. Released with froyo, no dual core support drivers are crap and when/if we do ever get a fully functional gingerbread it will be at the end of its cycle and never really get its dual core support. Lg purposely gimped it with 512mb ram. A real shame. I fully expect to not ever see an official ICS release. All these dual cores being released with gingerbread ram requirements are going to be put to waste.

I honestly think 512mb of ram isn't a requirement for ICS. If that's the case then the Nexus S and Nexus One (which both have 512mb of ram) will be left in the past and I don't think Google is ready to stop yet. I foresee at least one more major update for the Nexus S (ICS) and then maybe Google will have more strict requirements. I think Google is more big on software rather than hardware. As for the G2x receiving ICS officially that will most likely not happen, especially since the G2x didn't make the expected sales LG were going for. Remember majority equals priority for these big name company's and majority don't own a G2x. Majority switched to the Sensation or whatever even exchange they can get. This will be my first and last LG phone unless the next line of Nexus is with LG (I hope its either HTC or Samsung for Super Amoled screen).

I dunno where you get your info from, but they are wrong! I was told by Santa Clause, who heard it from the Easter Bunny, who won the info in a bet with a leprechaun that was running away from a unicorn while chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, that Ice Cream Sandwich won't be available on the G2X until at least winter.
I ate an ice cream sandwich today...way better than gingerbread.

Ice Cream Sandwich for Gtablet?

Anyone have an inkling on the possibilities of Ice Cream Sandwich for our Gtablet?

Ice cream sandwich will be open source unlike honeycomb. There might be possible that NVidia also can release drivers because source availability. If things go in the mentioned way then we can expect Ice cream sandwich. But ICS will be merge of GB and HC, not quite sure how much value add it will provide to the end users, but for Google and Vendors it great leap because of one version works for all. Lets wait and see...

I guess Google held back release of HC code because of fear of the two separate version of Android code in the market. Google wants no confusion, and so decided to release ICS to the communities and vendors. Again, it all depends ont he company's decision at that moment. Lets wait and see...
Hope for the best always
gTablet done, IMHO
No signs of any life re extending gTablet's life by manufacturer. And in today's aftermarket $MMI conference call another two tablets coming by year's end. No details other than 4LTE. A crowded field, all playing catch-up to the iPad 1/2. If the gTablet gets any further enhancements it will only due to the great work of the XDA developers here.

LOL. No ICS never porting to iDevices.
http://idroidproject.org/wiki/Status
Check that page. As of now they got 2.3.2 gingerbread running on certain legacy idevices. However the function is limited. That link shows whats working on what devices. I know none of the ipads are working at all. The iDroid project was/is just a way to show that it is physically possible to run the Android platform on the iPhone. I was running 2.1 or 2.2 (dont remember the version) on my old ipod touch 1gen and it booted and was capable of a few functions. There's no power management so theres no sleep mode so the battery would die in a matter of minutes. There's no acceleration so no games/video and it was slow as hell. There's no cellular data 2G/3G at all. No Google apps because it was an AOSP based port.
Its in an alpha state so its unusable for daily use, however I was able to use it to browse the internet. honestly everyone who had seen it on my ipod thought it was junk (or just a theme) but i have to give credit to whoever got Android running on an iPhone.
http://www.idroidproject.org/forum/index.php/topic,2228.0.html
There's a update about the project in a forum post. It says something about creating the newer idroid updates off of cyanogenmod. Also lists something about porting ICS CM9 to newer generation idevices in the future. So if youre interested, this may be something to look into.
Yes, in fact, its quite easy. You first take the ipad into the car, drive to the gas station, buy an ice cream sandwich, and eat it while using your ipad, there you go, ice cream sandwich and ipad at the same time!
just smack the ice cream in center of 2 ipads, problem solved.
