I'm posting here on behalf of a friend because I've tried everything I think I can do to help, but to no avail. I'll try to make this quick.
My friend bought a Galaxy Nexus LTE in December and it worked great for a few weeks, until the vibrator in the phone broke - he took it to a VZW store and they replaced it for him.
Upon receiving the replacement phone, he was having trouble with LTE staying connected. It would continuously drop and instead of falling back to 3G, it says he has no signal - signal indicator in settings displays a red bar (i.e. no coverage).
He took it back to VZW and they tried his SIM card in an employees phone - same issue happened to that phone. They then tried his SIM in a new phone off the shelf, same thing happened again.
Verizon is saying it's an issue with something at the account level, but I've encouraged him to go in and complain until they give him another replacement, just in case. However, it's very odd that his SIM card in three different GNex devices produces the same issue, even though his first one worked great. They have said that a future software update would fix this.
The other day I installed the leaked 4.0.4 update on his phone to see if the new radios would work, but the same issue kept happening. So I reverted him back to 4.0.2 so he could take his phone back to Verizon and beg for another replacement. Unfortunately I forgot to re-lock his phone so I still have to do that before he takes it in.
Has anyone ever heard of this before? It seems so odd that his SIM card would do this, but I still think that Verizon owes him another replacement device since he has a phone that isn't working like it should. He's getting a big discount on his family plan but he'd prefer to have LTE on his new phone.
I would love your thoughts - this just doesn't make sense to us. Any suggestions other than replacing the phone again? It sounds like VZW doesn't want to do that for him so it might be easier to fix it another way.
Can't speak for Verizon itself, but I have been through several SIM cards now on Telstra. Same issue, all of a sudden they are unable to pick up signal at all. Seems the pre-paid cards are more susceptible.
I'd ask for a replacement SIM, as opposed to a replacement phone as it's been proved the issue exists on multiple handsets already. If a new SIM doesn't alleviate the issue, the VZW rep may be right in that it is at the account level.
Good luck!
Hi all:
I am hoping that there are some hardware folks out there that may be able to shed some light on my situation.
I have a 4G Xoom. I wanted to be able to use the same SIM card in my Xoom as my Razr Maxx, but the Maxx uses a micro SIM, so I activated a regular mini SIM in my wife's Spectrum with my phone number and tried the SIM in the Xoom and it worked great. I then cut the SIM down to micro size and put it in my Razr Maxx, again worked great.
I planned on using the remainder of the mini SIM card that I punched the micro SIM from as an adapter for use in the Xoom. I figured that it was a good idea to store the "adapter" in the SIM card tray/slot of the Xoom until I needed it...BAD IDEA! Due to the nature of the spring loaded contacts the "adapter" got stuck, hung up on the contacts. I thought that an easy fix would be to slide something thin in the slot to free up the adapter. It worked in so far as I got the tray and the homemade adapter out, but I must have pressed too hard on the back three contacts as they no longer made contact with a SIM card.
I took the Xoom apart and used a paper clip to raise the contacts back up, but I raised them too far so I went in again and still didn't get it right because although I had a signal on the meter I could not connect to anything. The third time was the charm. I got a signal and was surfing the web!
Now the strange/good part. I now get a full 4G signal (presumably because I am roaming on a non-Verizon tower) as opposed to the usually poor signal at my house. I live right on the edge of a Verizon 4G service area. The Xoom surfs much faster now than before I broke it, but why? Did I short something out? Did I fail to raise one of the contact pins enough? It isn't the SIM, I verified that with another device. I did something to the SIM card slot, contacts, or a related electrical component, but what?
I want to "break"my Razr Maxx and my wife's Spectrum also!
Thanks for any thoughts from any of you hardware guys or anyone that knows how SIM cards work. I don't even know what contact/pin does what.
Thanks
RTW

You should be able to take it to a local electronic repair man and have them do it, if your xoom is out of warranty.
What's up guys, don't post much, so excuse if this is in wrong section or whatever. Just thought I'd post my solution for constant data dropping problem I was having. Where for one, I would only have a data connection for no more than 30 minutes before it would stop downloading/receiving any data. And then I'd have to turn mobile network off and then back on again. It also affected phones calls. Where once the data dropped and I tried to make a call it wouldn't connect at all. Nor could I receive calls without first turning off and back on mobile network, or airplane mode. In rare occasions it wouldn't even send texts. The worst part was that even when I had a data connection for whatever amount of time, I got 4g lte absolutely nowhere.
After extreme amounts of frustration, and 100's of reflashes, (not really) I came across a few forum post where users were experiencing the same issue. Some with root and some without. After further reading, some users posted that after contacting HTC, they recommended it be a sim card issue, as early micro Sims have shown to have some defects. And then that's what made me think. Sim card, maybe it's more simple than we think.
Thinking about how many times I dropped the fu*k out of my phone, I thought to grab my sim card removal tool and pop it out.
I noticed that with the sim card holder, the sim doesn't sit very snug in the slot, so given the thousands of times I've dropped this thing, it's likely that the sim card wasn't sitting in that "perfect spot". So I went ahead and blew in the card slot like a 90's game console, (cause that fixes everything) reseated the sim in the holder, and put it back in. And wala. 4g let speeds EVERYWHERE I go now, and not a single data drop for two days. Even when it's switching towers.
Now I no longer want to blow up AT&T
Because our phones don't have expandable memory, and an internal battery , we don't find ourselves having to open it, or constantly remove anything from it. Unless you have multiple carriers in which you switch between Sims with. But most of us contracted HOX users aren't even going to touch that sim slot.
To sum it up, I just hope that anyone that comes across this issue in the same details, and hasnt opened their sim card slot since the day it was activated and put in the phone, will come across this post. Just to give it a try before getting a new sim (as HTC suggests) or getting a different phone manufacturer (as AT&T suggest. -___- )
Thanks to all the devs for the hard work, and for keeping us interested in this ever-changing field.

I haven't dropped my phone, but if I shake it, I hear rattling. Is that the SIM card not sitting in there as tight as it should? I notice if I shake it enough, I'll lose some signal. Another weird thing, I'll get 4G LTE in school, but I walked into the parking lot today and only got 3G, but right now I am getting LTE again
It could be the sim, but it could also be the g sensor. I wouldn't imagine the sim be loose enough to cause a rattling. But who knows. They are micro šims, so the possibility of displacement on the contacts could be a bit more prone, as they have less surface area.

It's the camera. Normal.
I have quirky cell coverage areas on at&t too. Same spots with different phones for past 8 years.

Ah, makes sense.

My network losses were seriously unbearable. Sometimes I could only be browsing for less than 5 minutes before it dropped. Then it would continue ever five minutes after turning off and back on.

Have 403k Model, anyone else having issues with this? it happens a lot while I'm using the ookla speedtest application. I read that GPS might cause it but I pretty much leave it off 99.9% of the time. I just tried putting some paper on the sim card to see if the sim card isn't tight enough in the tray. Will report back but if t hat doesn't fix it do I have to take it back to T-Mobile? I did not purchase from the play store. At first I thought it was T-Mobile being really bad but I think its my phone rather than the network.
Try another sim card.

This is a wide spread fault. I have it. Weak signal areas trigger it, as it never happens at home. It's not GPS. I don't use it.
From the wonders of mobile telephony.
Hey everyone, I just bought the universal 8 gig Moto G 4g lte. I'm super pleased with the phone except it seems that my phone is constantly switching between LTE, H+, and H. I'm currently using Straight Talk with one of their AT&T sim cards. Sometimes I'll pick the phone up to make a call and it will say no service. It only lasts for maybe 20 seconds, but after it says no service and the time has passed it will show bars again. It's almost like it loses connection with the sim card or something.
I've spent several hours reading about the problems people have had with the switch to KitKat. My phone never shows the "no sim card" or anything of that nature. The triangle where the bars should be just goes completely empty. I'm just curious if this is known to be a software problem and not a hardware problem. I just came from a really really low end smartphone that would cut itself off on a daily basis. I need this phone to at least maintain normal functionality for a while. I don't have a phone to put the Straight Talk sim card in to check and see if it's the problem.
I don't really want to send the phone back, even though I've looked at the Nexus 5. It's a little bit out of my price range for a phone. Thanks in advance for your help.
