Amazon wifi only bypass - HTC Inspire 4G

Is there a way to make the amazon app store believe that it has a wifi connection so that wifi only applications can be downloaded without needing wifi?
I have unlimited data and never use my wifi unless I am tethering
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App

Considering that non-rooted phones still have to connect to a PC to side-load the darn apps, why can't we just use the "internet passthrough" feature and use our PC's broadband connection to download the wifi-only apps?!?

I am assuming you aren't Rooted? Cuz, um I don't have to connect to my PC to side load jack.
I have not been able to find an "app" that will let me bypass the wifi.

Correct, I'm still running the stock rom (non-rooted), but I'm getting close to my annoyance limit, heh.

I never used it. the phone made it three whole days before I was rooted and stock rom was booted.
'Course I read the forums for about a month before I was able to upgrade per my ATT contract and had already downloaded everything I needed and had a folder full of apps. Lolz

3d...I'm color blind so 3d is not my thing.
By the time I can upgrade again (in 1yr 4 months) quad core will be standard.

question about being rooted and using the built in tethering feature

does having the phone rooted prevent t mobile from blocking the built in tethering feature and allow us to use it without paying the 15$ a month fee and use it for free?
a friend of mines has a unrooted mytouch 4g and t mobile blocked off his built in tethering feature so he won't tether without paying the 15$ a month fee, so im just curious about this!
Use at your own risk. Worst I've heard happen is that tethering gets blocked until you add it to your plan. I've used it sparingly and had no issues or warnings.

I use it a lot...for browsing/email/attachments...no streaming/torrents or home use. Never a problem in the past 1.5 years
From my experience, root doesn't really matter. I have used my G2x to tether since I got it and before I rooted it without a problem. They didn't seem to hard code any checks for a tethering plan into the OS on this phone.
I use the feature all the time, but of course I have unlimited data. All you have to worry about is going over 5gb of data, or they'll throttle you, but you know... theres a quick FIX for that as well. ;D
so tethering is allowed on our device?
To be safe I installed the same WiFi tether I had on my old rooted Evo found here:
http://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/downloads/list?q=label:NexusOne
It says NexusOne but it works for any Android device. It's an APK for rooted devices. Enjoy!

I've used my NexusOne numerous times on business trips instead of paying for wifi access at hotels and airports. Never had a problem.
Now that I've got my G2x, the first thing I did was connected it to my laptop to test tethering. It worked fine. I used the built in feature, not an app. No block, no msg explaining I have to add a service. My advice, just hook it up and do it, in home, no traveling and it'll prove itself.

I've swapped out the build.prop file, but haven't gone over yet, so I can't confirm it works yet. From those that have, the popular consensus is, add the fix before going over, otherwise it won't work.

I've never had an issue. On the iPhone (not jailbroken) you have to call AT&T to activate. On this one, you get an information tag above the activate checkbox saying:
A Tethering/Mobile Hotspot plan is required to use this service. Please go to att.com/myWireless or dial 611 if you do not already have this service provisioned.

I've been using that on my Captivate for 7 or 8 months now, AT&T has never billed me. I'm not extravagant in my usage. The highest net data I've used is 4.5GB, but that's for both normal and tethered use. I've never been dinged.
I think if it becomes obvious, torrent or otherwise, then they may try to do something. But as far as I know, there is no way to distinguish the traffic of your phone from that of the connected devices.
My suggestion is try it for a small burst of data, note the time. Reboot your phone after. Then check your account online after a day or two and see whats listed under your data use.
You guys should try a custom apn similar to the captivate and atrix.

Ok... I tried this again after I posted the message. Something seems to have changed in my account. Now I get a "Verifying" message and then a note that says tethering is not available. My guess is that we'll have to replace the IP/Stack to not request verification information from AT&T.
So, sorry, no go yet.

guys MOBILE AP in settings! that's native wifi teather ap stands for access point. there is an apk you need to delete or freaze to do it without the tethering plan. ill get details from captivate section and report back.

in titaniumbackp if you are rooted freeze ir uninstall "tetheringmanager0326.apk" should unlock it. you can also delete it from adb, rootexplorer, other root file managers as long as you mount read write in terminal emulator, or you can use terminal emulator.
i have a linux machine and use sshdroid to ssh into the phone. that's another way to do it if you get a windows application that handles ssh.

Did 2.3.5 cripple your tether?

I posted this in two other threads but both got ignored.
As soon as I updated to the 2.3.5, tethering seems to be no longer supported. The option is there, but as soon as I activate the tether, 3G goes away. I have to turn off the tether, then manually switch mobile data off and on just for my 3G to come back.
Is this their way of getting people to finally pay for it?
Yes.. one of the features of the update was removing tether if you were not paying for it. No biggie though... you have a Nexus.. just unlock it and download one of the apps off the market.

I am a little confused why Google allowed sprint to do this. Whether you you use the tether or not and regardless of how easy it is to get it back it doesn't sit well with me that Sprint is calling the shots with this phone now. One of the major appeals of this phone is the pure Google experience, which is now the partial Google experience. I wonder if this had anything to do with the delay of the OTA, maybe sprint was holding out until google let them kill the tether? Anyways, it doesn't instill a great amount of confidence in google for this phone and future nexus devices. I still like the phone and there is nothing on sprint I would rather have, I'm just a little pissed at how they tucked this into an update that was much anticipated and stripped some of our "pure googleness".
I don't understand this...i dont pay anything extra for tether, and i can still tether on stock 2.3.5. Why are some people unable?
i just flashed the new KE5 radio(found in the ns4g dev section), and im not seeing any issues. still on 2.3.4 tho.. i dont see any reasons to update to 2.3.5 especially if this is a problem. i tether wayyyy too much.

So I have a two day new Nexus S and I did the manual update last night. Now when activating the mobile hotspot the 3g or 4g icons go away and it does not have connectivity anymore.
Now, I have read conflicting info about whether this is happening just to those who did the manual update and if you did OTA it still works. Can anyone confirm this?
If that is the case, then I need to return this one and get another and just be more patient next time to get the update officially OTA. =)
Not that I am tremendously worried about the tethering/hotspot being free, but I am uneasy that doing this manually may have screwed things up in as of yet other unknown ways. Like if I do pay for hotspot/tethering someday it might still not work right, etc.
Thanks!

People have been getting nailed right and left, seemingly regardless of ROM. I don't think the update has anything to do with it, they're likely doing some packet inspection to determine what OS the packets are originating from.
when i called in regarding the nasty gram. she emphasized to update my phone. so im guess that is where it is coming from. id agree with you.
Yeah, looks like it was the update. It's weird that all of you got caught those,
I tethered a decent amount a few days ago(don't care if anyone knows, even you AT&T spies!) while my home internet was out, not a thing.
Guess we know not to use any new updates from AT&T until we find out how they detect us without tetheringmanager.apk..
.
Sent from my phone. :3
It's because you're using a stock ROM. I believe there's a service (though I can't for the life of me remember what it's called) that can detect if you're tethering or not. Custom ROMs remove the service so they can't tell.
Im on infused 2.2.3 and I tethered a little bit today and have not gotten anything yet, seems to working fine.

Yeah, I used that much the other week... I've been running CM7 so I'm pretty sure that AT&T is doing some packet sniffing to see the useragent of the packets coming through. I don't think it has to do with the OS you're running.
I got a nastygram saying to stop by September 30th or they'll charge me. So far this month I've use 18gb so I'm sucking as much as I can before they cut me off!!

Works for me and I just updated using the recent 14MB (I think) file the other day. and tethered for a few hours....so far so good anyway.
My wife who has a Streak just got her nasty gram yesterday, now she does tether ALOT, but her phone does not even show a disclaimer for the mobile hotspot like ours does. So, i dont think it has anything to do with the update.
I dont tether alot but I do tether and most months stay around 8-10gigs. (most of that is actually on my phone, I like Netflix)
She is pissed because out where we live we do not have any high speed internet options but we have AWESOME data speeds with ATT but none of the other carriers have anything close. we thought about getting one of those mifi hotspots but ATT only has a 5gig one and that is just a joke to to think 3 teens and 2 adults are going to make that work.

You haven't gotten yourself unlimited? I had someone do it for me(don't know their XDA user), and I love it.

You have an Alarm set on your phone I assume? If you do that is what that is.
Post up a screenshot
Means you have an alarm set
I am going to assume from now on this is where to post noob questions?
Is there a way to set updates on the Atrix 2 so it asks? I want it to only update when I'm on my WiFi connection is why I want to know. I'm running the 200mb plan and if I don't get massive system updates OTA I'll be fine.

I feel you brotha, I had that plan when I got my first Android smartphone and I was able to manage it but you def gotta pay attention.
All you gotta do is open the market and go into settings, make sure "notifications" is ticked. That way it'll let you know when updates are available but won't download them automatically.
Many thanks!

Settings>battery and data>data saver
Enable this and no updates will download untill you're on Wi-Fi.

I actually hate the wifi needed for downloads. That's what I really miss about iOS

You dont have to be on wifi to download or update, its an option for those looking to not use up so much of their data plan allowance.

Only if you select that as an option, it doesn't require wifi by default. If you ever have that problem, go into settings/battery and data/data saver and make sure data saver is not ticked. If it is, you must be on wifi in order to d/l or update anything.
Thank you very much
