i did the update att sent me the other day and the first time i tethered after doing it was last night then this morning i get a msg from att to call them. so i did and they informed me they knew i was tethering but could not tell me how they new i was doing it. so now i am thinking about a new rom. i will reroot first and see if it replaced the tethering apk. if anyone has any information on this update please let me know. i was going to copy the msg they sent to me for the update but it conveniently del'd itself on reboot.

People have been getting nailed right and left, seemingly regardless of ROM. I don't think the update has anything to do with it, they're likely doing some packet inspection to determine what OS the packets are originating from.
when i called in regarding the nasty gram. she emphasized to update my phone. so im guess that is where it is coming from. id agree with you.
Yeah, looks like it was the update. It's weird that all of you got caught those,
I tethered a decent amount a few days ago(don't care if anyone knows, even you AT&T spies!) while my home internet was out, not a thing.
Guess we know not to use any new updates from AT&T until we find out how they detect us without tetheringmanager.apk..

It's because you're using a stock ROM. I believe there's a service (though I can't for the life of me remember what it's called) that can detect if you're tethering or not. Custom ROMs remove the service so they can't tell.
Im on infused 2.2.3 and I tethered a little bit today and have not gotten anything yet, seems to working fine.

Yeah, I used that much the other week... I've been running CM7 so I'm pretty sure that AT&T is doing some packet sniffing to see the useragent of the packets coming through. I don't think it has to do with the OS you're running.
I got a nastygram saying to stop by September 30th or they'll charge me. So far this month I've use 18gb so I'm sucking as much as I can before they cut me off!!

Whammy!!! Double whammy!! Triple whammy!!! I thought I used net a lot cos I use close to 1.5 GB a month at peak times.. with my avg around 1 GB, and no tethering whatsoever. No wonder AT&T is tracking on tethering users.

Bloat Freeze to block the tethering.apk It won't phone home then ;-)
Works for me and I just updated using the recent 14MB (I think) file the other day. and tethered for a few hours....so far so good anyway.
My wife who has a Streak just got her nasty gram yesterday, now she does tether ALOT, but her phone does not even show a disclaimer for the mobile hotspot like ours does. So, i dont think it has anything to do with the update.
I dont tether alot but I do tether and most months stay around 8-10gigs. (most of that is actually on my phone, I like Netflix)
She is pissed because out where we live we do not have any high speed internet options but we have AWESOME data speeds with ATT but none of the other carriers have anything close. we thought about getting one of those mifi hotspots but ATT only has a 5gig one and that is just a joke to to think 3 teens and 2 adults are going to make that work.

actually i would be paying the same price i am not for an UNLIMITED data plan to go down to a 4gb plan that allows me to tether. But when I got my Unlimited Plan there was nothing said about not being alowed to tether my phone. to my PC actually the rep in the store showed me how to do it with my old tilt.
Lucky bastards... I'm stuck on 2GB, so tethering really isn't a viable replacement option for me.
That being said, I find it absolutely bullsh*t that you have to pay for a certain way to use your data. Why should AT&T give a damn how you use your data? I pay for 2GB, I should be able to use it, however the hell I want.

I went into at&t today on my lunch break to try & talk them into putting me back on my unlimited data plan I once had when I had my iPhone. The last 2 months I've gone just over 2gb because of downloading roms from xda over data(when u gotta flash u gotta flash)
Anyways. He pulled up my data activity on his computer and as we were overlooking everything I had to hold back laughing out loud. It was hilarious seeing the size of roms I'm downloading and the at&t Rep saying "160mb! That is outrageous you must be downloading something!"
Also seeing the kernels I download, 6-7mb, on his screen.
IDk. I got a laugh. Thought I'd share
So did they let you get back on the unlimited data plan?
I was lucky enough to be able to keep my unlimited, for now anyway. Before they force me to pick a new data plan.
LOL....thats great. I tried and tried to get the unlimited data that I had on my bberry but was unsuccessful. I try to keep wifi connected for the big downloads, but sometimes you just have to get the latest ROM.
No I was not able to get my unlimited plan back. They said it isn't possible(probably bull****) but policy is policy.
this is hilarious man. thanks for sharing. I would probably have a similar experience since i am an avid flasher and mobile ap user. I still have unlimited though!! XD for now that is
Well, at least I don't feel quite so bad that they shot me down too for the unlimited package being added back on. I think it is that they just don't want to. I went as far as threatening to move all of my five lines to another carrier that has it. Maybe when I go to move the first one over, they may reconsider? Wishful thinking.
That sucks you can't get the unlimited data plan back. I've made damn sure they don't remove it on mine between all my updates from the iphone 3g.
Yeah its pretty lame, I had the unlimited for over 4 years and after changing my plan 3 months ago I can't go back.

Now, isn't that interesting.......I was told that they were allowing people that canceled within 90 days would be able to get it back because of Verizon offering it to lure away customers. Since you were right about 90 days, I think they are just being asses to their loyal customers. I changed mine about a year ago, but if they shafted you, that is really low. Maybe I should move all my lines.
Or maybe if enough people complain, they will reinstate it with some of the IPhone base unloading. (wishful thinking again I guess).
Any takers to call and complain? Threaten to move?
Are you telling me they can see what you've downloaded and not just the size of a download? That scares the hell out of me.

If you go to one of the new "4G" HSPA+ phones. You will lose your unlimited data. It will be replaced with a 4GB plan that is "specially provisioned" for the phone. I believe it is because these phones have the ability to be a wifi hotspot and att doesnt want your unlim data to be a hotspot. There is no way around it that i know of.
does having the phone rooted prevent t mobile from blocking the built in tethering feature and allow us to use it without paying the 15$ a month fee and use it for free?
a friend of mines has a unrooted mytouch 4g and t mobile blocked off his built in tethering feature so he won't tether without paying the 15$ a month fee, so im just curious about this!
Use at your own risk. Worst I've heard happen is that tethering gets blocked until you add it to your plan. I've used it sparingly and had no issues or warnings.

I use it a lot...for browsing/email/attachments...no streaming/torrents or home use. Never a problem in the past 1.5 years
From my experience, root doesn't really matter. I have used my G2x to tether since I got it and before I rooted it without a problem. They didn't seem to hard code any checks for a tethering plan into the OS on this phone.
I use the feature all the time, but of course I have unlimited data. All you have to worry about is going over 5gb of data, or they'll throttle you, but you know... theres a quick FIX for that as well. ;D
so tethering is allowed on our device?
To be safe I installed the same WiFi tether I had on my old rooted Evo found here:

It says NexusOne but it works for any Android device. It's an APK for rooted devices. Enjoy!

I've used my NexusOne numerous times on business trips instead of paying for wifi access at hotels and airports. Never had a problem.
Now that I've got my G2x, the first thing I did was connected it to my laptop to test tethering. It worked fine. I used the built in feature, not an app. No block, no msg explaining I have to add a service. My advice, just hook it up and do it, in home, no traveling and it'll prove itself.

Here is the link to the thread about data throttling and the fix.
I've swapped out the build.prop file, but haven't gone over yet, so I can't confirm it works yet. From those that have, the popular consensus is, add the fix before going over, otherwise it won't work.

Hey guys. Found this the other day.. Download Hotspot Widget by Harold muller.. Add it to your home page.. This will turn on the official Verizon Hotspot even if you aren't subscribed to a tethering package. No root required... HAPPY TETHERING!!!

Verizon is apparently "cracking down" on illegal tethering and automatically putting you on a 2gb plan. I think using their official app only makes it works.

Have heard substantial people say Verizon is cracking down, but few if any have actually had it happen to them. And as far as tracking, I believe there is something in GB that allows them to see if were tethering or not. By analyzing the packets or something

The problem with this is, if you lose that unlimited data plan you will never get it back.
I tether also (I use the free wireless tether) to tether my ipad2 occasionally, but I try to use as little data as possible when doing that. I would be seriously p!ssed if I lost my unlimited 4G dataplan.....(I was grandfathered in from my DroidX and old Windows phones)

Just found out today the hard way, it only works with froyo..
Tested this option and it works. The bad news is that after about an hour of blazing fast 15+ mbps my speeds dropped suddenly. I believe this lead to being severely throttled. From that point on the past two days my data speeds have hovered at 2 mbps. Did tests form various locations with a strong signal, still seeing 2 mbps. The speed test app will ramp up past 10 mbps and then rapidly drop off like a dead signal and then bounce back to around 2 megs. Tried rebooting and removing the app but still have not experienced my previous 4G 15+ mbps speeds. So I have a feeling this is not a good option to use. Use at your own risk.
And holy cow. I have TimeWarner Wideband at home and LTE puts it to shame.
I thank myself every time i use my phone now that I got the Skyrocket over the regular GS2.

BTW, I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that you can tether if you are rooted. From what I was reading it seemed that the people that were doing this were not being charged by AT&T. Although I only read a few posts and don't know the details.
I'm sure someone here can clarify further.
Ive Seen it in Stow, Akron, and Canton.

in regards to tethering, they can tell. When you tether they can tell by looking at the data packets. I'm not sure about the specifics, but the type of data packets or the signature or something changes so they can tell.
That's how they could tell with the iPhones, I'm sure its the same thing regardless of which phone you have because its more of a network thing.
I tether, with my old iPhone and this phone. But I'm not a heavy user (almost never even get close to 1gb of data). Never been yelled at.
If you do get called out on it, just play dumb. Just be like oh I didn't know I was doing that. I run Ubuntu from my phone, that might be it. You know, stuff that the representative won't know how to deal with / can't deal with it.

I was afraid that was going to be the answer. maybe i'll give it a few more months before i try.
I just got online and checked my data usage on AT&T, and I used about 100 Gig this pay period...good thing i have unlimited after being transferred from Alltel
How much do you all use?
100gig WTF ARE YOU using that much data for .. BTW this is nothing more than a e-peenis stroking contest ... and will turn south REALLY fast
I use my phone for Wifi at home. and I didn't mean to create a thread doomed for disaster...let's hope it doesn't become that!?
and this ladies and gents is WHY phone carriers put caps on data ... don't try and defend it 100g is ****ing crazy simple crazy your phones data is not meant to POWER the whole freaking house's internets
alright??? maybe this thread should be locked... my bad.
1.8 gb, Im a normal user.

~0.75-1.5 GB.... never crossed 1.5 GB. Typical - 0.75 - 1.25 GB in any given month, including use of maps, etc. I don't stream music or videos, except maybe once in a while when totally bored.
And as far as using as WiFi at home, get a basic cable internet for like 20 or 30 a month. You'll atleast help people connected to your tower get better speeds.
Porn in HD....takes alot of data....
Just saying...from what I've heard...

Ok... you better refrain from posting these kind of answers during work hours... its strange the way people around here see me when I giggle at the screen

lol well I tether to my laptop to watch Netflix in the back of my truck out and about, and i use Pandora quite a bit... 100gig is my biggest month ever, but i loved alltel and they gave me unlimited data no problem...so ATT had better honor that for what i pay, and i do plan on getting Wifi at home, however most of my data usage is movies on the go.
Let me guess: when you get busted using your 100 gigs tethered, the next thread will be "att is mean to me and it's not fair! "

no, my next thread would be "Transferred to Straight Talk and suddenly had enough money for WiFi"

fat chance they will shut you down lol
My biggest month? 114mb. Seriously.
Which is why I've used GoPhone for the last year. Ten bucks a month.
That is, until AT&T just decided that in order to get data, I need to buy $25 worth of airtime I don't need. F*** AT&T.

Yeah i know, my girlfriend has them and they called her around 2GB and said to stop being excessive or they will close the account. but if i wasn't paying $80 for my plan, i could afford Wifi, so I think i'd be *ok*

You said most of your usage was on the go. So I'm not sure what wifi has to do with it unless you're talking about a mobile hotspot.

yeah that's the downside to using regular data and having wifi at home... i lose the ability to watch movies "abroad" but i guess i'll deal with that dilemma when it's here.
