[Discussion] I find smartphones bulky for mobile phones - General Topics

I am currently using a Samsung Galaxy S, but what I want to say relates to pretty much all smartphones that I have seen. Without doubt their added functionality is welcome, but they are all very big and heavy (if compared to older mobile phones)!
When I am working in the office it bothers me a little, but for example when I go jogging I usually take a phone with me, and it is very cumbersome.
When I go dancing, I have to leave it in a bag by the table, because it hardly fits in my pocket and limits my dancing moves.
I can not see how this problem can be solved - if the screen is reduced in size the functionality and ease of use would suffer greatly. Can you think of any solution?
(it will be solved when technology advances enough to transmit images straight to our brain or at least our retinas).

Catch 22 really isn't it with size and functionality, personally I don't mind the larger screens though. I go out running and use my Desire HD for music and RunKeeper but it's fine in a leather case and fits perfectly in a pocket on my sleeve.

Hmm a sleeve pocket is an interesting idea. I put it in my pants pocket and it harms the balance and dangles, but a sleeve pocket can work.

Smallest Smartphones

The HTC one the link should work

The iphone really isn't that bulky at all.

Some of my friends have iPhones and they are about the same size and weight as my samsung galaxy s

HTC Desire is not bulky but Desire HD and Sensation for example are bulky.
For me, everything above 4" are bulky and under 4" are not.
Edit:
I do not really like the trend. Newer and more powerful smarties are getting bigger and bigger in size for example Desire<Sensation. If things keep going like this, we will be having a smartphone in the size of Galaxy Tab 10.1 or at least HTC Flyer in the future.
Note: Imagine someone holding a smartphone as big as Galaxy Tab 10.1 on his ear while having a call. LOL

If you list some "dumb" or feature phones that you consider pocketable it might help the discussion.
Basically what is your ideal size/form factor for a phone?
More choices for consumers is never a bad thing. If you find 4" and larger phones unwieldy, buy a smaller device.

Yup! That is why I am sticking with Desire (3.7")
I will accept anything below 4".
hmmmm...."dumb" phone LOL ...

I agree phones are getting larger, but as far as weight and slimness go I can only see improvements. My G1 was a "fat" phone, and then I got the Desire Z, which was by no means fat, but it wasn't thin either. Now with the Galaxy S II, it may have a 4.3" screen but it weighs less and is thinner than all my previous phones. At 8.49 mm thick and only weighing 116g its 1/3 lighter and almost half as thick as the Desire Z. If it the screen size itself that's the problem, options I think may become more limited in the modern market.

but now days its not bulky

I like big screens and I cannot lie...
Seriously though, growing up I always wondered why pants' pockets were so freakin big. Now I know why. I like large phones. They could be a little larger IMO if they streamed HD for long periods.

I hate this new trend of HD screens and their giant proportions resulting from it. Not all pants pockets are huge, try a nice pair of dress pants fitted to you. Can't get away without a bulge. Jeans too, they end up just limiting your movement swinging all huge as you walk.
I am completely disgusted by the new Droid 3 because of it's size .

Yeah, I prefer the form factor of mid-end phones like the Xperia Ray.

It depends on the phone. My LG Phoenix isn't that large. Especially not compared to the bigger phones.

I personally like a bigger screen. I think a 6 inch screen and slim build would be perfect for me.

Shall we get the Raphael?

Checking in!
Just to share a thought. Looking back more than a year ago, I had to spend some good effort hunting for the TyTN 1 (Got the first available variant model Taiwan CHT9000). This year alot of decent phones came out, making decisions much harder to make. I guess it is good news...
The Raphael would be a dream keyboarded WM 6.1 micro SD device but since I currently own the HTC Diamond and Apple iPhone 3G. I have to double think before getting this. May be I will have the Diamond sold and get the Raphael.
The iPhone lacks AD2P Bluetooth which is a serious draw back. The battery is non swappable, no memory card (not really a big deal cos the itunes sync is much more reliable than Active Sync ).
Feel free to share your thoughts!
Wow, you really are a "PPC-Warrior" with all those devices :O.
drivers?
Shall we get the Raphael?
Mmm that depends of the performance of the gpu,
or presence of a graphic driver!
Does anybody has information about this issue?
Does it take SDHC or just regular microSD?
takes SDHC up to 32GB
I had a dream...
What about the famous HTC Dream. its been long roumered to be out before year ends. Would it be worth waiting for I wonder.
I have so been waiting for this device to hit the shelves. HTC should have had this thing available 2 weeks ago or at least made some noise about it. Imagine if people knew about this!!
Apple sold 1 million Iphones here in Australia in the first 3 days and you cant even type on the damn thing without having to constantly correct yourself if you have fingers bigger than what my 5 yr old has and the GPS cant speak directions, no messenger and list of draw backs goes on.
I'm just hanging for this thing to arrive.
Will the Raphael have the same diamond back as the ,uh, Diamond? I read somewhere that the diamond doesn't lay flat on the table. I also read somewhere that there will be an optional flat back. Any thoughts?
The T-mobile branded Raphael has a flat backcover...
I can't really think of any reason not to buy a Raphael. This looks like the perfect device for current standards. And I don't think it has any serious flaw, which kept me from buying other devices (like the video issue on Tytn II for example).
The Raphael looks indeed quite great to me, but I like the screen size of the Xperia. Would there be a reason not to go for the Xperia?
The only thing that's putting me off is the screen size. 2.8 inches really isn't very big, especially when you're used to the Universal and its wonderful 3.7 inch VGA screen.
The xperia 3 inch screen isn't much bigger than the touch pro, plus I prefer the touch pro styling. I also wonder if the xperia's WVGA screen will cause software compatability problems?

1. maybe software problems with that screen solution
2. no video out
3. probably no (or not a lot) support by the chefs and professionals in this community for that hardware...
4. no release date avaliable

I have read the keyboard is awful. Unless they improve it before releasing, which is highly unlikely because that would change the design, I wouldn't buy it, afterall the main reason for me to choose Pro instead of Diamond is the keyboard, which is considered excellent by some people who had a chance to use it.
thanks, your arguments make enough sense to reconsider my liking. I wish the Diamond Pro would have a 3' screen ;-)
I heard that X-Peria is going to be released only in oct end , so thats quite some time whereas Raphael is scheduled to be launched on aug 5th i guess.
I am eying on the Raphael.

the physical screen size of the X1 is only 0.2" than the Raphael...
A good reason not to go the X1 is the wonderful Xda-developers forum
Another is that it's a bit delay
Personally the perfect phone for me would be a Diamond with micro-sd card support and a 3.5" screen with VGA but I sold my prophet and I can't no longer wait for the perfect phone. So, the best for now is the Raphael...
P.S. - Samsung Omnia is also a no go for me cause it doesn't have a stylus...
Actually the omnia has a stylus which looks like lipsick lol, there's nowhere on the handset to store it thought.. picture below.

Sunlight readable?
I am pretty sure I want to get the Touch Pro over the Xperia X1 apart from one thing. The reviews of the Xperia say it's screen is readable under direct sunlight. People I know with the Diamond say it is not.
I've spent the last year with the Tosh G900. It also has the 800x480 like the Xperia but it can't be seen outside. I was thinking that all these small screen high res phones were unreadable in sunlight. Maybe there is a problem with transflective displays at this pixel density?
The Touch Pro has a lot of advantages over the X1, 5 rows of keys, TV out and 640x480 screen (this is better I now know after living with the 800x480 for year and finding loads of apps that wont work). But I like to use TomTom while cycling so sunlight readable would be quite a bonus...
This phone so nearly does everything that I've been waiting so many years for, apart from decent camera with optical zoom and OLED screen. Guess I'll have to wait a few more years before I'm completely happy!
actually the diamond is the first pda/phone i have that the light sensor really works, if there is too much sun he will increase the display light, for me it is quite readable ( better than x7500 for example )

You would think that apple would of done something about concidering they came weeks after google and had to of watched their presentation.
And it looks like they won't be able to show some of the key features on the iphone 4... On day one it already gets a black eye.

oh okay orb no problem, xda is a win mob fan site (Me too ) but same time there are some apple fan boys here. This might be useful for them ha ha
It is relevant as most users here are used to phone hardware that is far more advanced than the iPhone.
Not anymore. Yes iPhone OS still sucks and of course there is no hardware keyboard, but the new phones display alone is enough to make me a little jealous. 960x640 makes the 800x480 screen on my Rhodium feel like QVGA. When will WE get display's like this? WinMo obviously never will, and WP7 only supports up to 800x480.
I assume Android could support this resolution, but when? Imagine the HD2's 4.3" display at 960x640! LCD pr0n it would be. HTC needs to get on this quickly.
Wow impressive, Video chat over wi-fi and the app which enables this is FaceTime. Cool.
video chat and the book apps is just bs. On the other hand - the screen, the camera (+LED flash), the processor, and the antenna seem like good innovations. Hate to say it, but... Well done, Apple.

You are right mate
I really hate to sound even a tiny bit pro Apple but what exactly about this new iPhone is fail? Besides the screen size it meets or bests the HD2 in the hardware department. The 960x640 resolution is well beyond anything HTC has produced (or plans to?); considering one of the main perks of our WinMo and Android phones has been the high resolution screens this point alone is pretty important.
Imagine Android hacked onto this new iPhone. Might make it arguably the best non-hardware-keyboard phone out there currently.
Hardware keyboard is still a requirement for me so it is an obvious no go. HTC has some catching up to do now, I do hope they soon announce a new Android phone with as high of a greater a resolution (and screen size, obviously) than the new iPhone.
I agree with MooGoo, further what i have heard is this new iPhone 4G has only 256 MB Ram and dont know how they though that they are going to do multitasking with that?? Either the Phone will slow down or battery power leak or can't open as many application as on win mob. But who knows may be they have done something innovative for that too.
Hardware seems nice. Software is disappointing though, I was expecting them to more towards the cloud a bit more and maybe cut that iTunes leash.

Nexus One, HTC Desire or Samsung Galaxy S

I'm looking into getting an Android based handset and can't decide which one from the three to get.
The Nexus One has the advantage of getting Froyo and possibly future updates before any other handset. The htc has sense ui which I like while the Samsung has the best specs and the best battery life from what I hear as well
If you guys were to get a new android device today, which would it be?
Go for the desire, it will get 2.2 eventually
Go for the Nexus with all the great XDA mod's, rom's, fix's and will have FroYo real soon!
If I were going to Android* definitely will choose this one:

*But I´m not
Here are the positives and negatives of each, short of it is that the rest is mostly the same:
Nexus One:
+First in line to get new Android versions from Google
-HTC's remarkably crappy pentile AMOLED screen, crappy color accuracy, crappy effective resolution, and crappy sunlight legibility
Desire:
+576MB RAM
-HTC's remarkably crappy pentile AMOLED screen, crappy color accuracy, crappy effective resolution, and crappy sunlight legibility
Samsung Galaxy S
+AWESOME 4" super AMOLED. Beautiful colors, excellent sunlight legibility -- actually a good AMOLED.
-256MB RAM (less than half of the Desire, and half of the Nexus One's)
-Samsung TouchWiz (sucks)
The screen con for the HTCs and the lack of RAM for the Galaxy S prevent me from recommending any one of them.
Thanks for all the replies. So looks like we still don't have a real good Android phone? Is the new Acer Ferrari any good?
I've been using the iPhone for almost 2 years (first 3G then 3GS) and love it but thought I'd get something different this time around and Android seems to be the way forward. I do like the Blackberry 9800 slider as well and the iPhone 4 looks pretty kick-ass.
I would still recommend NexusOne , for the simple reason that liking/disliking SenseUI is a very personal thing.

In this case, yes, the Galaxy S is the obvious choice.
I am in Dubai, UAE. None of the phones have officially been released yet although Galaxy S is expected within a week or two. Desire and Nexus One both cost the same here (about US$600).
Acer is officially available and a bit cheaper and I'm playing with Liquid-E which is 512MB ROM and RAM but I still find the unit lags on and off. I also used the Motorola Droid which, IMHO, seemed to run quite nicely but I must say that SenseUI definitely adds a lot to Android. Legend is now being released here officially sometime next week- is that worth going for?
Again, apologies for all the questions and appreciate all the answers

My Nexus 6 concept - What do you think?

Hi,
I created a little concept about the successor of the Nexus 5. Maybe its called Nexus 6 or Nexus 5 (2014).
Rumors say that it will have a 5.5" display so I decided to build this in my concept. Its just a 2D render, not a 3D or something.
I were really amazed that this 5.5" display fits in a body which is just a few millimeters larger than the one of the Nexus 5. I compared the two.
So final question: What do you think about my concept?

Perhaps making the device thicker by a mm or two would prevent the random touches you mention.
Would also mean a larger (higher capacity) battery could be installed.
Though the almost bezel-less design, when used with a protective case/bumper may cause issues with screen edge touches.
k-c
Nice to hear your opinions
For those bezels they might have to move the buttons to the back ala LG G2/3. I like it though.
The bezel is too small, and the fact that the bottom has a different shape to the top really annoys me. Like the speaker grille though.
No bezel barely will mean bigger cases would be overlapping the screen space. Not good. For marks, or using pie or sidebars.
I like it! Never did care for Bezels...they sux's!
Do any of you guys realize and/or think about the implications of razor thin bezels? Disregarding the issue of the digitizer registering touches simply by holding the device, there are physical/engineering issues to consider. The screen has to be held within some type of housing, not just to protect the screen but the rest of the phone itself, and the bezels on your mockup are less than 1 mm thick. Exactly what type of material do you envision the housing to be made of? Even aluminum wouldn't have enough strength at under a single mm thick. Titanium? What do you think that would do to the price of the phone?
So, to achieve bezels like this would require either a significant increase in cost or a significant reduction in durability, and this is on top of the compromise in usability. And for what purpose? Exactly what is gained from having such thin bezels?
Lastly, and not to sound like an ass, but wouldn't it be better to think up something new and/or innovative instead of just marching down road obvious? Seriously... larger screen, thinner bezels? Let me guess, you see it being a 4k resolution screen too... for no other reason than just because.
I'm sure the OP isn't actually designing it.

not bad compared to the A series, but not really compact 6.1 inches
Then there's this opinion, tongue in cheek, article which I tend to agree with, but YMMV.
It’s settled: 6.1 inches is the ideal smartphone screen size
It’s almost small and not too huge: a real win-win.

I'm more concerned with the size of the phone, not the size of the screen. I think the whole small "bezels" (which is a misnomer, but that's a different rant), thin phones thing is just fashion/form over function. Edge to edge screens just make phones harder to handle without accidentally changing something unwanted, and they make screens more susceptible to breakage. Thin phones make it harder to securely hold the phone, and waste space which could be filled with a larger or user replaceable battery, SD card storage, a headphone jack, etc. Especially ones with camera bumps - just make the whole back flush with the camera and use the additional volume for something useful.

Thin phones make it harder to securely hold the phone, and waste space which could be filled with a larger or user replaceable battery, SD card storage, a headphone jack, etc. Especially ones with camera bumps - just make the whole back flush with the camera and use the additional volume for something useful.
