Hey guys. I've downloaded several different roms over the past week and have yet to find one I like. Maybe you guys could recommend one. I'm looking for good battery life (at least a whole day, about 10+ hours. I like some sense, mainly the dialer and contacts . For the app drawer I like launcher pro. working 4g would be nice. What are some rom/kernel combos that you could recommend? I have an evo. Thanks
P.s. I tried vaelpak but had really bad battery life, even with other kernels.
I think you've made a criteria that will make your selection easy, but since you've already downloaded them all try each for two days and eventually you'll come across one where you just know its for you. Personally, I use Elelinux's froyo 2.2.1 rom with Erasmux flykernell11 -really fast
How's the battery?
The best way is to test several ROM´s till you get to your personal best
So I have had andromeda 2.0 orange themed for about a week and I can honestly say this is the best rom I have ever used on my captivate. it runs ultra smooth and has great gps and wifi locking time

Glad you like it. Probably would be better if posted in the Andromeda thread.
Welcome to XDA!!
I tried at first, said i did not have permission to post there
Its definitely my daily use rom for a long time. I'm glad to say i can stop my flashing addiction for awhile! Thanks, I finally switched over from the iphone to the world of android and couldn't be happier. Theres nothing like this place, open source feels so right
Thank you for making your first post a good one. Tired of seeing all the help me first posts. I'm on andromeda too. This thing is so smooth. Agree with you man. Got at least 40 roms on my laptop that I've tried, and of all of em, this rom is the most snappy one of all.
Yeah I said it, most snappy.
Edit, btw 10 posts under your belt and you can post in development
I'm using andromeda as well, very impressive
Same here. Best battery life yet and solid GPS.
I am a fan of the ROM. Having trouble restoring all my settings though. I'm determined to get it to work though. I've tried Phoenix Rising and liked it but had less than ideal battery life... This ROM is snappy and I really enjoy the fonts and animations... great all around.
Agreed! Andromeda is a great ROM. I also tried posting on the official thread, but I'm a newbie too. Also came from iPhone, and don't think I'll be looking back anytime soon Was disappointed with the Captivate at first in stock form, but the people here at XDA make it great!
Mikes roms are pretty sweet too. Should check him out.

+1 for MikeyMike's roms. He is a great dev and his roms don't have any BS in them, very clean!! Serendipity is also one of the most "complete" themes from a fresh flash that I have ever encountered. Themed everything, calculator, calender, dialer, contacts, everything he could get his hands on. He even took the time (w/ ChanceM) to remove video call options from everything. Now that just shows how hard he works to make great roms!
All the roms are equal, we all use the same hacks/mods, some have a different mix of each, just depends on what the end user wants. Andromeda was wise to do theme'd and non-theme'd versions, I personally prefer to leave customizations up to the user.

That makes no sense. Just trying to understand, all paintings are equal cause all painters use the same canvas, oil, and brushes? So a 3 yr old in day care makes equal work as a Pollock in a museum. Same technique, paint and canvas. Is that what you're saying?

What I think he is trying to say is that almost every rom its nearly identical outside of theme. Most of the same tweaks and hacks are being used by all.
I think a better analogy is its like building a car with all the same parts but yours has fuzzy dice
Not sure in the end it its that simple but I believe that was his point

I agree. I get in my truck, pop my captivate in my GPS holder, plug in my car charger, start my truck, open car home replacement w/GPS speedometer, put the truck in gear and by the time I back out of my parking spot, I have a GPS lock. Literally 6 seconds or so for GPS lock.
Andromeda is fan-damn-tastic.

All ROM's pretty much are the same, to back up DG and to add to mcord's elaboration, the themes are the eye candy that attracts people to them. If one of the other ROM's doesn't have a certain tweak/hack/mod, you can simply add it and make it into "the most amazing ROM ever".
If you were given 2 SUV's: the Chevy Trailblazer and the Izuzu Ascender, would you be able to tell the difference in driveabilty? Not really. The 2 SUV's are the exact same, just with different names.
If you were given 2 captivates loaded with 2 completely different ROM's. but they were themed the same and had the same tweaks and whatnot, would you be able to tell the difference? Some people are still running stock 2.1 with SRE and are reporting that their phones are the snappiest things ever.
I know everyone has their own opinion on which one feels fast, stable and more responsive, which is cool, cuz you're entitled to it. But honestly, it's all in your head lol. It was all in my head too I was running perception and swapped to setiron's kernel and was like "wow, this kernel is awesome and the the lagfix makes this thing fly".... I booted into recovery to flash a theme and noticed that the lagfix wasn't even applied yet!! Therefore, the speed increase I was "noticing", was in fact all in my head

Except for some reason one car starts faster than another, and gets better gas mileage, and handles way better.
That is to say, GPS lock is WAY faster on Andromeda, the battery life is vastly superior to other ROMs (I test every ROM thoroughly before deciding if I want to keep it or not, and after a proper battery calibration the first test I run is battery life.), and there is absolutely no lag at all.
So, yes.. you can say it's like every car being built with the same parts, but the Andromeda Car must have properly inflated tires, and not running A/C or anything else that drags down gas mileage. lol
This is not really a debate or argument. Andromeda is a great rom and performs well, I do not think anyone is saying other wise. Considering dg helped with the kernel I don't think he was either
Way too much thought process going into this guys, phone vs. car. No way you can compare the two.
All the devs knows what each other is doing to each rom, all they have to do is download it and dissect it. Or ask.
I have personally have tried all of them, and yes, their all about the same.
Only thing that will have effect on it is kernel or modem.
Comparing a car which is hardware to a rom that is software. Now my head hurts.

do u like it better than cognition and is it overclocked?

Sorry I will shut up
Ok, I was an early adopter of this phone bought it the day it came out July 18th. There are a great many things that disappoint me about this phone, main thing being lack of Froyo at the moment. I'm tired of waiting for samsung, I have little faith it will truely resolve my issues which are the following
In order to use wifi I must reboot my phone, this only occurred after the official JH7 was loaded on it through the over the air update that ATT did.
Constantly having lag all the time, and having apps running that I never ever use and dont want such as ATT Navigator, ATT Family Map, etc. I was able to root the phone and get rid of those but it really hasnt helped.
My stereo bluetooth headphones must be paired EVERY single time I want to use them, its not the headphones because they work perfectly with 4 other devices.
Of course the GPS, it sucks for everyone, any of these or all fix that? Samsung seems unwilling.
So maybe I'm wishing too much but I've watched almost every youtube review of the ROMs that are out there and theres a few details that stick out for things that I want in a rom so I'll detail them here and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction as to which one has the best combo.
1. froyo based, I need 2.2 for certain apps
2. I've heard theres different modems that can affect HSPA, I want fastest download and upload.
3. No wild color schemes, I dont like orange or green. I quite like the look of the phone I think samsung did a great job with the touchwiz and I know theres alot of you out there that perfer the "vanilla" versions of Android. I'm not one of those people. I really loved the look of the cognition rom and some of the things it had visually.
4. Overclocking would be nice but not at the expense of battery life, I'm right in the 24-30 hour range just as most are on here, better would be great if possible.
Go to romkitchen.org and build your own there. There are many threads about the advantages of one modem over another, and you can pick pretty much everything yourself. Then search for CLShortfuse's GPS fix and you'll be set.
Don't worry, its extremely easy

30 hours, you have to consider what you are asking. I want faster dl, no lag, better gps, but I don't want to eat any more battery. It is possible to get 30hrs of light to moderate use. Heavy use will yield 12-18
Andromeda v1.2 is a rom that is pretty vanilla....simple and has the things your looking for. You have to try roms that you think will be what you want.

+2 for Andromeda 1.2.
You can fix all of these if you root the phone. The best ROM out there is the Rom Kitchen (aka "Doc's ROMs") over at romkitchen.org. You can "cook up" your own ROMs using the specifications you want. This is what is so great about the ROM kitchen, especially when compared to the other ROMs like Cognition: you can pick what you want, and don't have to take whatever it was that someone else decided was best. For example, if you want the benefits of rooting but want to keep touchwiz, the ROM kitchen has an option for that. It also lets you pick things like the theme, boot animation, apps, etc. There are 5 captivate modems, and you might just have to experiment to see which one is best. I did this, and it was well worth it. The one that worked best for me was the XXJPP modem. Just load a seperate ROM with each of the different modems, flash each, and download a few things to see which is faster. Also check and see how well the GPS works on each.
Rooting will fix the lag, although one of the ROM kitchen kernels (Glitterball's Voodoo) will improve it even further. There is something called "Project Voodoo" which is a community of developers who build a kernel tweak called Voodoo which completely fixes the remaining lag issue (this is caused by the inefficient way the captivate organizes its folders), and also improves a few other features such as resolution.
You should go try out my ROM its small and fast and stable. I'm getting great battery life and DL/UL speeds. Give it a shot.
Here.
Well I decided to go with the serendipity 5.9, I love the speed, my upload and download speeds almost doubled, bluetooth and wifi finally work like they are supposed to!!

Need to get started on custom icons and I think I want to try my hand at a completely custom framework. Anyway, I was perfectly happy with 'dipity out of the box, but since I've flashed Paragon this phone is AMAZING. It's quite fast and the battery seems to last forever. Just now recharging for the first cycle after having to reflash my rom w/o a full battery, so after today I'll know for sure how long the battery last, but initially it seems like I'll get a day or so with my daughter constantly playing video's and games all day.

I wouldn't mind knowing either. I'm thinking it's a different launcher, but I'm only guessing. Still kinda new to android.
im on MIUI 1.11.18 but i was just generally wondering what everyone else thought was better and why?...

General purpose question.
And you've to test a rom by yourself because, some people like Miui and some others like CM7 ... there is no rule on that!
Me I like both, but what a shame I only have one Defy...
Pepsi and coke. They are both good roms I like cm7 more but that's just me. Find your flavor and if u ever get bored switch it up.
Same as both answers above, you will not get a definite answer. Only way is to try both yourself then decide which one you like best.
If you want speed then CM7 is better, but if you something that looks good and is a lot more customizable then MIUI is the choice.
I am always swapping and changing between them both.
Cheers
But, if you want best of bouth roms, then CMIUI by chile.

I like some functions in MiUI like the phone where it searches the contacts as you type, the look and feel of MIUI etc while there are some functions in CM7 like changing track with long press volume, long press back killing application etc are very nice. I finally settled for CM7 with go contacts and launcher

so why is some ppl still think version 2.0 is the best when the rom is already at v2.5? obviously some of the newer cm7 drivers inputs aren't that great?
i was on cm7 and currently looking for alternatives because of some of the problems with recent cm7. i think sync/merge with cyanogen kills it, and in turns indirectly kills cmiui......

CMIUI v2.5 feels stable enough. I updated from 2.0 to 2.5. Both versions are fine.
Isn't a question of what's better, it's defined by your taste. Considering both "stock" versions, with no customizations (like CMiUI or BareBones):
CM7 is stable, fast and light. If you want your phone to run like a bullet, even with several background applications running, this is your goal.
MiUI is quite fast, and beautiful. If you run no background apps (like, i.e., Usage Timelines or Lookout), it'll run as fast as CM7, but it has a poorer performance for gaming or other high-CPU/GPU consuming tasks compared to CyanogenMod.
There are implementations that make things even better: CMiUI claims to make the phone as fast as if it was running CM7 (I don't think so, but I still think it's the best ROM available), and BareBones is supposed to make CM7 phones run even faster (which is perfectly plausible, since it rips off almost every app which isn't indispensable for the phone to work). It's up to you to try the ROMs and find the one that suites better with your personal needs.
How about battery life?
On which one is better?
i've tried cm7, galnet ics miui, and dsj ics miui. can't say i noticed much differences in battery life. they all consumed about 0.5-0.6% of battery life per hour in deep sleep.
performance wise cm7 is still the smoothest and most stable. i have no doubt about that. it has the least troubles/problems.
Just wondering how all of you are finding battery life on CM7 (or possibly other AOSP based ROMs)
One of the main reasons I decided to ditch Sense 3.5 and use CM7 was the battery gain (as Sense is known to be a heavy resource hog)
The speed is amazing. Much faster than Sense, no doubt.
But I'll be honest. I'm not too impressed so far. Battery seems to be more or less the same for me on CM7 as on Sense ROMs. I thought many people said it was better?!
I was using Endymion Sense ROM 3.2 before.
What about everyone else? Is battery life for you good or bad on CM7?
Cheers!

CM7 increased my battery life quite alot. I usually get 2-3 days out of it. I think that the main advantage to CM7 is that it turns off my wireless when I'm not using my phone, which saves alot of battery drain.

Oly, battery consumption figures will only differ significantly between good ROMs in their sleep state, and not really that much during the "awake" state. What i mean is that if a ROM is properly compiled, and there is no undue drain element, then most ROMs have a relatively stable, characteristic baseline battery drain, which usually remains constant for that ROM.
You have to remember that the difference between battery life of any ROM stems from 3 main variables, if app usage (games etc) and call usage are kept constant...and these are :
1) Active Radio Stacks : Network [Signal strength, Data type (3G>2G>WiFi)]; Bluetooth; GPS
2) Screen (On time and Brightness)
3) Data Traffic (Auto-Sync, polling frequency and net data transferred)
and maybe add Sensor polling frequency to the above (light sensor, proximity sensor, accelerometer, etc - i do not have conclusive evidence how much these affect the battery actually)
So if you do not use a phone too much, and it is in sleep state most of the time, the overall battery consumption values, and consequently the battery life, for different ROMs may differ significantly. But if you start using your phone, with apps launching, screen on, data traffic, etc... there is not much difference there...all ROMs will eventually die within a couple of hours of each other with normal usage (provided you dont mess around with CPU clockspeeds)
So when people report insanely high battery life like 6 days (on CM, etc), it's all mostly spent in sleep (confirmed by analyzing the screen-shots of their battery graph, looking for "awake" and "screen on" states)
With Endymion, I've realized that Sense is no longer the kind of battery guzzler it has had the misfortune of being labelled previously. It gives me a sleep state drain of 6-9 mA. MIUI has always given me a sleep drain of around 5-8 mA, and i don't really care for CM drain, as it looks too.....eh ugly. (No disrespect to CM users... but GB is not ICS, and it does look kinda retarded after using Sense and MIUI) So eventually, all of them get me through to the end of my typical day. But even if there is only 10% battery remaining on the Sense ROM, 15% on MIUI and 20% on the CM, what good will it do me? I still need to charge all of them at night to meet my requirements for the next day of regular use!
If you use your phone like a smartphone is meant to be use, you WILL run out of battery by the evening, so get into the habit of top-up charging. And if you want to use it as a paperweight....does it really matter how many days it can go without a charge? What's the point?
P.S. : BTW Oly, Congrats on the new Advent Vega!!
Cheers enigmaamit!!!
I really appreciate your lengthy explanation! I sort of understand where your coming from too
I end up charging my phone every night too, so I guess it doesn't make much of a difference whether my battery is 10%, or 20% on either ROM
I remember feeling like you at first about CM. It is ugly, Gingerbread lacks the Polish on ICS
However with a little tweaking, it can become a beautiful UI

Here is my current set up I think it looks nice IMO! !
As you can see it quite themeable like MIUI, with the built I'm Theme Chooser App. I have given it a sense look
I think in standby usage, CM has better battery life than Sense, although, I haven't done any battery measurements so far!
Haha, what make you think I got a Advent Vega?
Haven't got it yet, but I'm looking to get one!!
They are dirt cheap At the moment, going for £129 here in UK.
They are awesome! It can run ICS and Honeycomb, and its dualcore 10"
Fantastic!
Cheers buddy!

I remember feeling like you at first about CM. It is ugly, Gingerbread lacks the Polish on ICS
However with a little tweaking, it can become a beautiful UI

So let me see.... You take CM, then load up a gazillion themes and third party apps and widgets and finally make CM look like....let me guess, SENSE!!!
But it's still CM right? And when you see a slightly better looking Sense-like app or widget, you download and install it, right? To take it that one step closer to actual sense...? Why i'm sayin all this Oly, is because i've already jumped through these hoops a long time ago... There is nothing like SENSE. If you like CM/Stock GB look, you'll never bother to load it up to look like sense. But if you are trying to make and AOSP look like Sense, it means YOU WANT SENSE! And since you are lucky enough to own an HTC device, just use the real damn thing, man!!
CM should look like CM, and Sense should look like the visual orgasm that it is... (just my opinion) - at least for HTC device owners. For the other poor souls out there with the Sammys and LGs and what not, i can understand them trying to shave their balls and get all sense-shiny, but we are the chosen ones with the choice to use the Original thing! Have you ever wondered why everyone wants to port Sense to non-HTC devices, despite epic failures? How practically all launchers in the market have so many Sense-like themes? It's because those who can't have it, want it bad... And it's just not the visual bit...Sense is actually more intuitive than anything i've ever come across on a phone (toughest competition being MIUI)
Of course that's all just a matter of opinion. But it does make Sense. [snicker, snicker]
I just take the short route and just use SENSE itself !! LoL
P.S. : You had mentioned in passing about wanting to get the Vega some time ago... and yesterday on your profile page, it said you were viewing the Advent Vega General forum, so i thought you'd have gotten one by now. Quite a bit of Sherlock Holmes down the drain!! [facepalm]

Damn man, haha!!
Your tempting me to go back to Sense!!
Very good point there, that HTC devices are unique with Sense...
Maybe I should go back afterall...?
The Sense UI is just too pretty
Here was my CM look a day before loaded the Sense Theme.
Less Sense like. But after a day on CM7, I went back and installed Sense theme with sense replacement Widgets
You made a really good point... damn... decisions.... back to sense or not
My real plus for CM though is the inherited speed. My phone feels like its young and reborn. Multitasking is like silk. Sense is very pretty, but unfortunately not as fast as AOSP.
However, I am finding each day I'm missing elements of Sense, particularly the fast boot option!
Hehe, yeah I was browsing the Vega forums yesterday, I was checking out some of the new ICS ROMs!
If you love Sense so much, is pure ICS a different story for you? That's why your using it?

I'm using ICS because i like to be on the bleeding edge of things.
It helps me foster my tech hobby and teaches me more about new stuff everyday, and consequently, i can put in more input into the forum. And i like to see the look on my buddies' faces when i show them ICS casually (they're mostly doctors you see....a dumb lot when it comes to all things binary )
I am not averse to trying out new stuff Oly...if you remember, i've always led you (and a couple more unsuspecting buddies like det) into temptation with my vociferous praise and rave reviews of ROMs like the MIUI and early ICS betas. I know i don't like CM because i made that decision after flashing it and running it for a couple of days... As for ICS, i like to keep pace with the development of a new OS on my phone. (It's just too cool to miss!!). I've even tried Lowveld's nihilistically christened "Reaper" today...and while it's all good and speedy, i don't want to test fire a deep space probe using my phone, so the speed that Endymion offers me is plenty.
All things said and done, no matter how promiscuous i've been all day, in the end I find myself coming home to Sense (Endymion, to be specific)

Fair enough
I guess I'll just stick around with CM7 for a bit longer...
If I ever want to return to Endymion I'm just a NANDroid Restore away
And battery life looks to be more promising for me today.
I guess mobile data really is a battery killer.
I'm using WiFi moderately today, and battery seems much better!
How about it CM9 is available...?
Will you ever use that?
It'll be like any other ICS ROM, but with endless amount of tweaks.
Cheers mate!

We shall see....!!
Always a pleasure talking to you buddy. Ciao.
Cm7 has variable battery life depending on kernel n governor. With the same use pattern I've had best battery out of 7.1 with tiamet n smartass v2.
But even with 7.2 and interactive then ondemand governors I get better life than sense. I've used stock, endy, lbc etc

Please help enigmaamit for the right selection between ics (Quattro) or miui weekly or sense(endymion v3.3). Thanks in advance

Yeah, I'm using stable CM7.1, tiamat kernel, and smartass2
Seems better than when I first made this thread now. Ibthink the battery has calibrated itself now and is getting slightly better.

Hi Raj.
Unfortunately, there is no correct answer to that question... I am not you, and consequently, my choice of ROM may not be the best one for you (Hell, i myself keep changing my ROMs more often than most people change socks!!) However, if you want a friendly advice, i have the following to say to you :
If you're new to flashing, and need your phone for daily use, i recommend you wait before flashing ICS till a fully functional ROM is released.
As for MIUI, i would again advise you to wait for MIUI v4 but still, you can flash the current one, which is still an excellent ROM, especially if you are into theming a lot... as the theming capabilities in MIUI are insane!! MIUI is basically a very good ROM with the UI specifically designed to be modded to infinity...so you'll never get bored theming it. Also it's an excellent ROM even if you just want a functional ROM and are not so much into theming... There are features like the excellent in-built file manger, lockscreen mods, the best FM Radio i have found in any ROM, etc...which you just won't find anywhere else, at least not at the level of sophistication that MIUI has managed! It is a very good all-round package, with many exclusive properties.
There is another option, the AOSP CyanogenMod 7 series, which is basically pure Android 2.3.7 muscle, minus the bloat. Undiluted vanilla Gingerbread experience. To quote a friend of mine - "CM is for power users with endless customizations with the powerful CM7 settings. Seriously. The possibilities are endless." Choose this if performance is your only addiction, and you can also modify the looks on this, although to a much lesser degree as compared to MIUI (NOTHING can touch MIUI when it comes to theming ). It's the fastest and lightest family of Android ROMs available today, and the speed and battery life are supposed to be benchmark standards for other ROMs. While there was only the main CM branch available to us until a few days ago, the options available have recently shot up, thanks to devs like shrome and Sir Lowveld (yeah, that one's special!), who have come up with a port (BlackIce) and a whole new ROM (Reaper) respectively for the Desire S...
As for Sense, there are a ton of Sense ROMs to choose from... but the idea of using Sense is a little different. It is about balance. Excellent functionality, loads of character, and killer looks, all in a stable framework. It is basically the most intuitive Android experience i have personally come across. It's like the phone actually understands what you want... it's so easy to use and completely noob-friendly. You can use it right out of the box, without even having to configure anything yourself. Sense is not just a UI...it's a philosophy. It's the way you and your phone communicate. And it's unmatched by anything else on any device or OS out there. But then again, the trade-off is that you have to pretty much use it as it is, without too many "on-the-fly" customization options (although with the new additions like RCMIX Tweaks [and derivatives thereof] and the Endymion Control Centre, that is changing rapidly), and modifications have to be done at recovery-restart level, something all users may not be very comfortable with... It's better to choose the look that you like (Endymion - Stock (with optional theme manager integrated, Coredroid - A Blue-tinged custom ROM, BinDroid - With heavily modded custom looks, etc), and then let it "settle" on you for some time. If you still want me to call out names, and you just want a stable, irritation-free experience, then from personal bias, i'd advise you to go for Endymion...
But the best way to decide which ROM is most compatible with you, is to use them all! Each has its strengths and weaknesses, and none of these ROMs is perfect. Use all of them! Stay on each ROM for a couple of days, let the ROM settle-in a little, and then decide which one you want to use on a daily basis.
Go ahead, experiment. Find your perfect match!
And then maybe give long boring answers to questions like these!!
Yeah, agree with you there!
Although you forgot to mention that CM is for power users with endless customizations with the powerful CM7 settings. Seriously. The possibilities aare endless
