Ok, I was an early adopter of this phone bought it the day it came out July 18th. There are a great many things that disappoint me about this phone, main thing being lack of Froyo at the moment. I'm tired of waiting for samsung, I have little faith it will truely resolve my issues which are the following
In order to use wifi I must reboot my phone, this only occurred after the official JH7 was loaded on it through the over the air update that ATT did.
Constantly having lag all the time, and having apps running that I never ever use and dont want such as ATT Navigator, ATT Family Map, etc. I was able to root the phone and get rid of those but it really hasnt helped.
My stereo bluetooth headphones must be paired EVERY single time I want to use them, its not the headphones because they work perfectly with 4 other devices.
Of course the GPS, it sucks for everyone, any of these or all fix that? Samsung seems unwilling.
So maybe I'm wishing too much but I've watched almost every youtube review of the ROMs that are out there and theres a few details that stick out for things that I want in a rom so I'll detail them here and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction as to which one has the best combo.
1. froyo based, I need 2.2 for certain apps
2. I've heard theres different modems that can affect HSPA, I want fastest download and upload.
3. No wild color schemes, I dont like orange or green. I quite like the look of the phone I think samsung did a great job with the touchwiz and I know theres alot of you out there that perfer the "vanilla" versions of Android. I'm not one of those people. I really loved the look of the cognition rom and some of the things it had visually.
4. Overclocking would be nice but not at the expense of battery life, I'm right in the 24-30 hour range just as most are on here, better would be great if possible.
Go to romkitchen.org and build your own there. There are many threads about the advantages of one modem over another, and you can pick pretty much everything yourself. Then search for CLShortfuse's GPS fix and you'll be set.
Don't worry, its extremely easy

24-30 hours of what kind of use? There are a couple roms out there with stock appearance
Cognition
Perception
Precision
Andromeda

30 hours, you have to consider what you are asking. I want faster dl, no lag, better gps, but I don't want to eat any more battery. It is possible to get 30hrs of light to moderate use. Heavy use will yield 12-18
Andromeda v1.2 is a rom that is pretty vanilla....simple and has the things your looking for. You have to try roms that you think will be what you want.

+2 for Andromeda 1.2.
You can fix all of these if you root the phone. The best ROM out there is the Rom Kitchen (aka "Doc's ROMs") over at romkitchen.org. You can "cook up" your own ROMs using the specifications you want. This is what is so great about the ROM kitchen, especially when compared to the other ROMs like Cognition: you can pick what you want, and don't have to take whatever it was that someone else decided was best. For example, if you want the benefits of rooting but want to keep touchwiz, the ROM kitchen has an option for that. It also lets you pick things like the theme, boot animation, apps, etc. There are 5 captivate modems, and you might just have to experiment to see which one is best. I did this, and it was well worth it. The one that worked best for me was the XXJPP modem. Just load a seperate ROM with each of the different modems, flash each, and download a few things to see which is faster. Also check and see how well the GPS works on each.
Rooting will fix the lag, although one of the ROM kitchen kernels (Glitterball's Voodoo) will improve it even further. There is something called "Project Voodoo" which is a community of developers who build a kernel tweak called Voodoo which completely fixes the remaining lag issue (this is caused by the inefficient way the captivate organizes its folders), and also improves a few other features such as resolution.
You should go try out my ROM its small and fast and stable. I'm getting great battery life and DL/UL speeds. Give it a shot.
Here.
Well I decided to go with the serendipity 5.9, I love the speed, my upload and download speeds almost doubled, bluetooth and wifi finally work like they are supposed to!!
I do have a few complaints though, like the keyboard for texting, I loved the samsung one, I hate swipe any way i can get the stock one back on there?

However, if you're still interested in the Samsung keyboard, it's in here:

I just found that, wow, short of having a flash on the camera and video chat this phone is now everything I could have ever dreamed of
Holy crap what a difference. Everything actually works and is super fast. I would be on cloud nine right now except for the fact I'm probably soon getting the Atrix, this will def hold me over till then.
Im using Precision 3.5 with the monochrome 3.5 theme. Its running the latest suckerpunch kernel. For sure my favorite combo I've tried so far. Its really amazing, not to mention dev'd by ryude, who is one of the best!

Samsung Captivate running Serendipity 5.12 Paragon6 1200-100hz (uv'd and slightly oc'd) and I9000XXJVE modem. Almost have it edited/themed up how I want it. Need to get started on custom icons and I think I want to try my hand at a completely custom framework. Anyway, I was perfectly happy with 'dipity out of the box, but since I've flashed Paragon this phone is AMAZING. It's quite fast and the battery seems to last forever. Just now recharging for the first cycle after having to reflash my rom w/o a full battery, so after today I'll know for sure how long the battery last, but initially it seems like I'll get a day or so with my daughter constantly playing video's and games all day.
I have tried the team phoenix roms. I'm currently running phoenix 7.0 and am happy so far.

I wouldn't mind knowing either. I'm thinking it's a different launcher, but I'm only guessing. Still kinda new to android.
I just got a free Inspire after hating my Craptivate for almost a year. It turns out, AT&T has a few worthwhile customer service people, you just have to lucky.
I am looking to flash a new ROM, I really hate not having Amazon market, and all the associated apps I got used to on my old phone, but seeing as how we just got an OTA update, do you think it would be worthwhile to hold off and see what the Devs make of it first?
I know my way around this stuff somewhat, and I know how to use search and follow instructions, but I really need my phone to be reliable and stable. I always had a great experience with DesignGears' ROMs for the Cappy, and I guess I'm just wondering what the consensus is (if such a thing exists) on a ROM/Kernel that might not have all of the bleeding edge features and whatnot, but is super stable and improves battery life.
I am familiar with the line "If you want a stable phone, leave it alone," and I know that's true, but I hope you understand what I am shooting for here. Thanks for your time, the community here seems generally cordial and helpful, and much more civil than some.
I haven't really heard of anyone complaining about stability on the rather large amount of roms that are available for the Inspire/Desire HD. I've only tried di11igaf's non-sense rom, CyanogenMod release, and am currently running the latest CyanogenMod nightly. They've all been rock solid in my daily use.
I've gone through all the current ROMs for both Desire HD and Inspire and found far more impressive ROMs than not. I'm currently running d.i.l.l.i.g.a.f with Sense and Love it, fast, stable and great battery. LeeDroid's work is also amazing...all of his ROMs (he has several to choose from) his Froyo is known for its exceptional battery compared to others.
I use my phone for work so I completely understand the value of battery and stability.
Good luck with the search!
Cheers!

I tried several ROMs before I found one I liked. Never once had a stability problem, just a matter of finding a ROM with the features I wanted.
Much like everyone else, I've tried several roms, and my experiences were pretty stable across the board. Currently I've settled on Ultimate Droid since it seems to be the quickest and smoothest experience for me. as far as battery life goes, I can make it through the day with the amount of use I give this phone.

Hi Everyone,
I am seeking recommendations on custom ROMs for the captivate. I kknow it wouldn't be fair to compare specially after the hard work so many developers are putting in for *free*. This is for a phone I have been playing around with. It currently is on Continuum 5.1 which I love, but it is getting laggy. I need to give it to my kid sister and reliability and speed are of concern to her.
If Continuum is a recommendation, I'd stay put
I was wondering which is the best ROM according to your experience.
Parameters:
- Speed
- Usability
- Gingerbread ideally (or froyo if that's faster)
- Themes (because its gonna be for a girl who will want new clothes for the phone everyday!)
- Keyboard availability should be good. She is used to a qwerty phone which she feels easy, and touch screens are new to her
(edit: and anyway I could remove the globe button on swype which was irritating and cuts short the keyboard width http://twitpic.com/4suqes)
Moderators, you can categorise anywhere if you please, or shut it down if there is a discussion already on on a similar subject of comparison/reviews because I couldn't find it.
thanks!

If you really want a GB based rom then I would say . But if you don't care for GB and are fine with Froyo then Cognition 4.3.2 is amazing. Great battery life (about 30hrs with moderate usage, wifi on all the time and apps like current weather, weather forecast, pulse news, facebook, gmail, calender, score mobile, tweetdeck, espn and cnn constantly using the wifi) and its not laggy. I know the quadrant scores don't mean much but my cappy gave me a score of over 1600.
Cheers.
These threads are always subjective. You have to try different rom, kernel and modem packages to see what works best for her phone. Not all Captivates are equal.

This. You have to read about them and decide what you like best. Some people may really like one particular rom and then you get to it and are like this sucks, I hate it. Go try some out and don't forget to read up on bootloaders if you decide to go the GB way.

So far I am pleased with GR 12. Granted, I don't probably use my phone for a lot of intense applications etc. like others, but I haven't had any issues with the ROM. Of course, I don't burden my phone with a lot of apps and I think by doing so I get good results with the ROM. My battery life has been great ( I'm sitting at 73% right now after 29 hours, 23 minutes). Like I said, that's a few calls, checking email and occasional music listening.
Like others have said, it is subjective. I always leave everything pretty much as MikeyMike developed it and I love it.

I love the look of MIUI but the battery is lacking and I love the battery of cm7 but it doesn't have as good of customization as MIUI. So my question is is there anyway I could improve my battery to what cm7 is with MIUI so I could get the best of both worlds. If not then I am going to stick with cm7 cuz its super fast and has ridiculous battery.

As no two batteries or phones are created equal, how is anyone supposed to answer this for you? You could do lots of stuff, but what works for me, is not going to work for you. I use my phone little, I use my phone a ton. You use your phone all day, you never use it. I don't have sense? Or Do? Do you? I sync nothing. Maybe I sync everything. ......You sync what? The equasion is way to large to really help.. You need to play with the phone to figure it out.
There is undervolting, there is removing and freezing, processes - there are literally 20+ things you can do and one of them, or none of them may work for you.
My opinion tho; Miui is horrible. Good luck with that.

Alrighty, then.
As tweaked said, the are so many factors. Until you can get a whole bunch of people testing both roms, with zero variation between setups, you can't properly gauge a response to your question.
I haven't run either ROM, but miui looks like it might have a little more eye candy/nifty stuff. It would seem to me that that comes with a price... Battery. I could be way off the mark on that, so...
Besides, there is no perfect ROM, and if someone had managed to fuse the two roms in such a way as you suggest, it would probably take the form of some new hybrid, but more likely, a major version upgrade/add-on's for either of the two roms in question.
I want to start of by saying I mean no disrespect to all the devs/cooks here. I appreciate and love all of their hard work.
Now, after flashing countless amounts of roms/kernels and always having some type of problems like GPS, small mms, random force closes, etc. I went back to complelty stock and wow... My phone is smoother than I ever remembered. My data speeds seem a little faster and GPS locks on faster than ever. Battery life is a LITTLE worse than custom roms but I figure I spend less trying with the screen on trying to get stuff to work so it evens out.
Well I just thought I would share my experience. If you are like me ALWAYS trying to find the perfect Rom/kernel combo that just works, then try stock one more time. It just might surprise you

Been reading alot about the whole process of rooting and flashing over the last few days, and I must say I join your conclusion somehow. Instead of seaching for minor improvement that sometimes set you back in other fields, why not just use the Stock options that the producer can stand by.
Even so I can totally understand the willingness to try and make a product better, and understanding it in the best possible way. That beeing said, I hope they still continue the great work with making custom roms to further push the limits of our device.
Hansge.
If you're happy with the factory ROM, then a custom one isn't necessarily better. One of the things I like about Android though is the freedom to use my phone the way I want to, and that includes custom ROMs if one better suits my requirements. It's all about choice.
most people simply want to remove the BLOAT that comes with stock roms so basically once you receive the opportunity to root you simply freeze the BLOAT with titanium backup and keep the stock rom. I personally like AOSP and most phones don't come with AOSP out of the box unless it's a Nexus so I always end up flashing a custom rom. But I can say that I was running CM7 on my Sensation and became sick of the browser freezes and I went back to stock for a few days and LOVED it eventhough I hate HTC Sense LOL it was just nice to have a phone in which EVERYTHING worked as
it was intended
I personally think a custom kernel has more influence on daily use then custom rom. The differnce between zram and no zram where huge for me on gingerbread.
Custom isn't for everyone
The stock ROMs are usually the best option for most users. Pretty much the same as any custom vs. stock situation. My co-worker is using a ROM that blocks all data usage except from the browser. He loves it. His battery lasts two days without effort and he doesn't miss a thing. Personally, I'd go nuts if that was the stock ROM, but it is good for him.
Have to agree that it's really about choice.
If the missing features are ones you never use then you haven't really lost anything.
I had my Sensation running on a custom ROM within hours of buying it and I've never looked back (though that may be to my disadvantage since I have no point of comparison).

You could create a situation like that by rooting and setting up DroidWall.
I too agree with RestInPieces209.
Really love what the cookers here on xda are doing though!
Tried several custom roms and there always were a couple functions that weren't working properly. Now, since one week back on stock and S-on, most stable and complete rom there is. Eagerly waiting for ICS
if it wasnt for these roms... i would get to damn bored of my phone really quickly... would spend a lot of money buying a new phone as soon as im bored with it..
I can bare the small errors i get, fc etc.. as soon as its up to date, new improvements both visually and functionality. i mean, i got beats on my sensation (non XE) it looks good to have, but also better sound. I got original 1.5Ghz dual core instead of downclocked (by HTC) 1.2GHz... i still got approx 30-40hrs of battery. and thats good!
i can only praise custom roms! thanks devs!
edit:
HTC arent dumbasses themselfs - they know how to make a great phone. they make phones they think as many as possible would like - with all their criteria; stability, good battery, performance etc. By trying to fullfill everyones wishes, somethings are being sacrificed ( such as 1.5GHz for better battery).
Thats why custom roms exists, so you can adapt the phone to your needs...
I would agree with the OP so far in terms of my Sensation, but my previous phone (ZTE Blade) was MASSIVELY improved with custom ROMs.
Some people are obsessed with perpetually messing about with their toys, regardless of the benefits/hassles. Almost always men.
Also, I guess that as phones (fancy ones such as the Sensation) get fancier and faster, so the law of diminishing returns applies regarding tweaks.
It boils down to preference really. Installing roms from other phones or customized ones so you can enjoy the full experience of your phone is just a choice. Like I the stock rom on the Sensation but then they came out with the Sensation XE with beats audio and I love to listen quality music. So then that rom was perfect for me.. My .02 cents.

I agree. My old phones like the og droid, Eris, D2 global, etc were all improved with roms. But htc did a really good job on the sensation. After flashing the stock Rom and installing 2 ota updates that they have released it is smooth as butter. Even texting this message on my phone seems faster and more accurate than I ever remember.

It honestly boils down to pure preference. Specifically for the Sensation, most people like custom ROMS because they hate HTC Sense. So they are willing to deal with FC's and less stable ROMS just so they can never see Sense again
Since I cannot stand the sense ui yes, custom romd are better. I have no issues with cyanogen mod. I suppose I could always use stock rooted and a custom launcher though.
Sent from my Incredible 2 using XDA App
Custom ROMS are basically for people that want something different on their phone. Stock ROMS are reliable, stable, and provide default phone usage. On the other hand, stock ROMS (depending on what the developer has done to it) can change the way things looks, are, feel, and work. Some also have the capability to make your battery life last longer than the stock ROM. Custom ROMS are better or suck compared to stock ROMS in their own ways. It's just up to you, to decide which ROM fits your needs and expectations. Developers have this thing called a changelog that lists EVERYTHING that they have tweaked, changed, or improved since they created the ROM. It's best to look at and read it, to see if you like what they did to it/changed, or what it makes your phone capable to do. To me, it's all about what you REALLY want on your phone and all about researching the custom ROMS.
Hope I helped even a little. PEACE!
