Which ROM? - Captivate General

Hi Everyone,
I am seeking recommendations on custom ROMs for the captivate. I kknow it wouldn't be fair to compare specially after the hard work so many developers are putting in for *free*. This is for a phone I have been playing around with. It currently is on Continuum 5.1 which I love, but it is getting laggy. I need to give it to my kid sister and reliability and speed are of concern to her.
If Continuum is a recommendation, I'd stay put
I was wondering which is the best ROM according to your experience.
Parameters:
- Speed
- Usability
- Gingerbread ideally (or froyo if that's faster)
- Themes (because its gonna be for a girl who will want new clothes for the phone everyday!)
- Keyboard availability should be good. She is used to a qwerty phone which she feels easy, and touch screens are new to her
(edit: and anyway I could remove the globe button on swype which was irritating and cuts short the keyboard width http://twitpic.com/4suqes)
Moderators, you can categorise anywhere if you please, or shut it down if there is a discussion already on on a similar subject of comparison/reviews because I couldn't find it.
thanks!

If you really want a GB based rom then I would say . But if you don't care for GB and are fine with Froyo then Cognition 4.3.2 is amazing. Great battery life (about 30hrs with moderate usage, wifi on all the time and apps like current weather, weather forecast, pulse news, facebook, gmail, calender, score mobile, tweetdeck, espn and cnn constantly using the wifi) and its not laggy. I know the quadrant scores don't mean much but my cappy gave me a score of over 1600.
Cheers.

These threads are always subjective. You have to try different rom, kernel and modem packages to see what works best for her phone. Not all Captivates are equal.

This. You have to read about them and decide what you like best. Some people may really like one particular rom and then you get to it and are like this sucks, I hate it. Go try some out and don't forget to read up on bootloaders if you decide to go the GB way.

So far I am pleased with GR 12. Granted, I don't probably use my phone for a lot of intense applications etc. like others, but I haven't had any issues with the ROM. Of course, I don't burden my phone with a lot of apps and I think by doing so I get good results with the ROM. My battery life has been great ( I'm sitting at 73% right now after 29 hours, 23 minutes). Like I said, that's a few calls, checking email and occasional music listening.
Like others have said, it is subjective. I always leave everything pretty much as MikeyMike developed it and I love it.

5.. 4.. 3...

There is no best rom. Just best for you. Please search before you open a new thread, as you will see they all get closed due to becoming a flame fest. With that said. Thread closed

[VIDEO] Weekly ROM Review

Hey guys,
I recently got a Captivate (well, 1 month ago) and 2 phones ago I had a HTC Tilt and I was definitely a flashaholic then ROM-wise.
With my Captivate, even now, I probably change ROMs every other day. I like trying different things out and hate just having one ROM at all time.
But I know when I first started out, I had no idea which ROM to pick..
ERGO
I am thinking of doing Video Reviews of ROMs. Initially once a week and then if people show support probably more often than that. I will try my best to be neutral and unbiased, as I honestly have no preference for ROMs either, I just flash new stuff and try different things out.
I'll be highlighting the following for each ROM I flash & review:
-Battery Life
-GPS accuracy & speed
[those 2 are probably my most important personally]
-CPU & GPU Speed (LinPack, Quadrant, etc)
-Internet Up/Down Speed (SpeedTest)
-Unique features
-Major issues / crashes / major bugs / etc
I will try my best to be as subjective as possible as I do not want to discourage people from developing ROMs but instead the opposite.
Please let me know what you think, if you have any suggestions, etc.
If I feel like I have the approval of the XDA community I will start a YouTube channel ASAP!
Thanks
skadamat
just go right ahead
Good Idea! Wrong Forum! Even though you are reviewing roms it should still be in general. Great Idea though.

OP, you should have tried out for the XDA-TV.. they need people who want to do video reviews and etc.
Was kinda hoping to already find a video in here
I personally think this is a great idea. I would watch.
Do that please!!! Nice idea!!!
go for it! I would definitely watch.
Yep do it now!!!! I was ready to watch some videos as well. I'd like to see some of these ROMs in action so I can decide for myself. I don't have time to keep switching ROMs every day myself

Looking forward to seeing this one take off.
I'd watch it
I am just getting ready to flash my 1st ROM to my Captivate and I would LOVE to see Video Reviews.

Andromeda 2.0 best rom ever!

So I have had andromeda 2.0 orange themed for about a week and I can honestly say this is the best rom I have ever used on my captivate. it runs ultra smooth and has great gps and wifi locking time

Welcome to XDA!!
I tried at first, said i did not have permission to post there
Its definitely my daily use rom for a long time. I'm glad to say i can stop my flashing addiction for awhile! Thanks, I finally switched over from the iphone to the world of android and couldn't be happier. Theres nothing like this place, open source feels so right
Thank you for making your first post a good one. Tired of seeing all the help me first posts. I'm on andromeda too. This thing is so smooth. Agree with you man. Got at least 40 roms on my laptop that I've tried, and of all of em, this rom is the most snappy one of all.
Yeah I said it, most snappy.
Edit, btw 10 posts under your belt and you can post in development
I'm using andromeda as well, very impressive
Same here. Best battery life yet and solid GPS.
I am a fan of the ROM. Having trouble restoring all my settings though. I'm determined to get it to work though. I've tried Phoenix Rising and liked it but had less than ideal battery life... This ROM is snappy and I really enjoy the fonts and animations... great all around.
Agreed! Andromeda is a great ROM. I also tried posting on the official thread, but I'm a newbie too. Also came from iPhone, and don't think I'll be looking back anytime soon Was disappointed with the Captivate at first in stock form, but the people here at XDA make it great!
Mikes roms are pretty sweet too. Should check him out.

+1 for MikeyMike's roms. He is a great dev and his roms don't have any BS in them, very clean!! Serendipity is also one of the most "complete" themes from a fresh flash that I have ever encountered. Themed everything, calculator, calender, dialer, contacts, everything he could get his hands on. He even took the time (w/ ChanceM) to remove video call options from everything. Now that just shows how hard he works to make great roms!
All the roms are equal, we all use the same hacks/mods, some have a different mix of each, just depends on what the end user wants. Andromeda was wise to do theme'd and non-theme'd versions, I personally prefer to leave customizations up to the user.

That makes no sense. Just trying to understand, all paintings are equal cause all painters use the same canvas, oil, and brushes? So a 3 yr old in day care makes equal work as a Pollock in a museum. Same technique, paint and canvas. Is that what you're saying?

What I think he is trying to say is that almost every rom its nearly identical outside of theme. Most of the same tweaks and hacks are being used by all.
I think a better analogy is its like building a car with all the same parts but yours has fuzzy dice
Not sure in the end it its that simple but I believe that was his point

I agree. I get in my truck, pop my captivate in my GPS holder, plug in my car charger, start my truck, open car home replacement w/GPS speedometer, put the truck in gear and by the time I back out of my parking spot, I have a GPS lock. Literally 6 seconds or so for GPS lock.
Andromeda is fan-damn-tastic.

All ROM's pretty much are the same, to back up DG and to add to mcord's elaboration, the themes are the eye candy that attracts people to them. If one of the other ROM's doesn't have a certain tweak/hack/mod, you can simply add it and make it into "the most amazing ROM ever".
If you were given 2 SUV's: the Chevy Trailblazer and the Izuzu Ascender, would you be able to tell the difference in driveabilty? Not really. The 2 SUV's are the exact same, just with different names.
If you were given 2 captivates loaded with 2 completely different ROM's. but they were themed the same and had the same tweaks and whatnot, would you be able to tell the difference? Some people are still running stock 2.1 with SRE and are reporting that their phones are the snappiest things ever.
I know everyone has their own opinion on which one feels fast, stable and more responsive, which is cool, cuz you're entitled to it. But honestly, it's all in your head lol. It was all in my head too I was running perception and swapped to setiron's kernel and was like "wow, this kernel is awesome and the the lagfix makes this thing fly".... I booted into recovery to flash a theme and noticed that the lagfix wasn't even applied yet!! Therefore, the speed increase I was "noticing", was in fact all in my head

Except for some reason one car starts faster than another, and gets better gas mileage, and handles way better.
That is to say, GPS lock is WAY faster on Andromeda, the battery life is vastly superior to other ROMs (I test every ROM thoroughly before deciding if I want to keep it or not, and after a proper battery calibration the first test I run is battery life.), and there is absolutely no lag at all.
So, yes.. you can say it's like every car being built with the same parts, but the Andromeda Car must have properly inflated tires, and not running A/C or anything else that drags down gas mileage. lol
This is not really a debate or argument. Andromeda is a great rom and performs well, I do not think anyone is saying other wise. Considering dg helped with the kernel I don't think he was either
Way too much thought process going into this guys, phone vs. car. No way you can compare the two.
All the devs knows what each other is doing to each rom, all they have to do is download it and dissect it. Or ask.
I have personally have tried all of them, and yes, their all about the same.
Only thing that will have effect on it is kernel or modem.
Comparing a car which is hardware to a rom that is software. Now my head hurts.
cognition
do u like it better than cognition and is it overclocked?

Sorry I will shut up

Trying to decide which ROM to go with, hoping it fixes my issues

Ok, I was an early adopter of this phone bought it the day it came out July 18th. There are a great many things that disappoint me about this phone, main thing being lack of Froyo at the moment. I'm tired of waiting for samsung, I have little faith it will truely resolve my issues which are the following
In order to use wifi I must reboot my phone, this only occurred after the official JH7 was loaded on it through the over the air update that ATT did.
Constantly having lag all the time, and having apps running that I never ever use and dont want such as ATT Navigator, ATT Family Map, etc. I was able to root the phone and get rid of those but it really hasnt helped.
My stereo bluetooth headphones must be paired EVERY single time I want to use them, its not the headphones because they work perfectly with 4 other devices.
Of course the GPS, it sucks for everyone, any of these or all fix that? Samsung seems unwilling.
So maybe I'm wishing too much but I've watched almost every youtube review of the ROMs that are out there and theres a few details that stick out for things that I want in a rom so I'll detail them here and hopefully someone can point me in the right direction as to which one has the best combo.
1. froyo based, I need 2.2 for certain apps
2. I've heard theres different modems that can affect HSPA, I want fastest download and upload.
3. No wild color schemes, I dont like orange or green. I quite like the look of the phone I think samsung did a great job with the touchwiz and I know theres alot of you out there that perfer the "vanilla" versions of Android. I'm not one of those people. I really loved the look of the cognition rom and some of the things it had visually.
4. Overclocking would be nice but not at the expense of battery life, I'm right in the 24-30 hour range just as most are on here, better would be great if possible.
Go to romkitchen.org and build your own there. There are many threads about the advantages of one modem over another, and you can pick pretty much everything yourself. Then search for CLShortfuse's GPS fix and you'll be set.
Don't worry, its extremely easy

24-30 hours of what kind of use? There are a couple roms out there with stock appearance
Cognition
Perception
Precision

Docs
30 hours, you have to consider what you are asking. I want faster dl, no lag, better gps, but I don't want to eat any more battery. It is possible to get 30hrs of light to moderate use. Heavy use will yield 12-18
Andromeda v1.2 is a rom that is pretty vanilla....simple and has the things your looking for. You have to try roms that you think will be what you want.

+2 for Andromeda 1.2.
You can fix all of these if you root the phone. The best ROM out there is the Rom Kitchen (aka "Doc's ROMs") over at romkitchen.org. You can "cook up" your own ROMs using the specifications you want. This is what is so great about the ROM kitchen, especially when compared to the other ROMs like Cognition: you can pick what you want, and don't have to take whatever it was that someone else decided was best. For example, if you want the benefits of rooting but want to keep touchwiz, the ROM kitchen has an option for that. It also lets you pick things like the theme, boot animation, apps, etc. There are 5 captivate modems, and you might just have to experiment to see which one is best. I did this, and it was well worth it. The one that worked best for me was the XXJPP modem. Just load a seperate ROM with each of the different modems, flash each, and download a few things to see which is faster. Also check and see how well the GPS works on each.
Rooting will fix the lag, although one of the ROM kitchen kernels (Glitterball's Voodoo) will improve it even further. There is something called "Project Voodoo" which is a community of developers who build a kernel tweak called Voodoo which completely fixes the remaining lag issue (this is caused by the inefficient way the captivate organizes its folders), and also improves a few other features such as resolution.
You should go try out my ROM its small and fast and stable. I'm getting great battery life and DL/UL speeds. Give it a shot.
Here.
Well I decided to go with the serendipity 5.9, I love the speed, my upload and download speeds almost doubled, bluetooth and wifi finally work like they are supposed to!!

Need to get started on custom icons and I think I want to try my hand at a completely custom framework. Just now recharging for the first cycle after having to reflash my rom w/o a full battery, so after today I'll know for sure how long the battery last, but initially it seems like I'll get a day or so with my daughter constantly playing video's and games all day.

I wouldn't mind knowing either. I'm thinking it's a different launcher, but I'm only guessing. Still kinda new to android.

What is the deal with CM7?

TB is my very first android, and i have come a long way, but maybe not long enough
as i can not for the life of me understand why everyone nut over the rom dubbed as cm7?
why???
I have been on almost single rom on the TB, and countless updates on each of them..
what is so special about CM7? do you prefer running linux?? why not run windows 3.1 on your quad core computers?
is it nostalgic?? or does it simply remind you of your ex girlfriend that you loved?
I know the dev team for the CM7 works very hard but so does every other dev.
So is it because cyanogen mod are simply better developers, and with their code other devs could build their rom with their findings..
i need to know, in order to get to the promise land
I guess some people hate anything other than stock android. But tbh I can't stand stock android. It is so boring and not polished.sense is so nice. But cyanogenmod is really fast and responsive. And battery life is a factor
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
i'm sure a full fledged cm7 has good battery life.
not the current one. everything else seems to have better battery life
Its not bloated with extra crap. I love sense but to me CM7 always seems to be the fastest rom I run on my TB. It started out really popular with the TB because it was the only way for people to get gingerbread on their TB. It has grown so much and is finally, in my opinion nearly perfect. Its been a great trip and people have stayed with it till now and it has been well worth the wait. Stock android(for the most part) is a nice breath of fresh air.

It's not really stock android. It's close, but there's many improvements that work well with the system. OMFGB is much more vanilla than CM7. It's also 100% opensource (unlike sense roms and aosp roms like miui) which is useful if you care about more than the rom because you like to hack around on the source and don't trust certain roms like miui (no offense, but I am not using a rom made by chinese with no source given, just too creepy for me as far as how much control you are giving them aside from the fact they give back nothing to the community).
For the OP's information, there's plenty of information out there (including articles on wired and many screen casts on youtube) about CM7, besides their own site/wiki/forums/irc channel
there is much about cm7 that you don't know.
start here for a very small list of features... http://www.cyanogenmod.com/about/features
but this list barely scratches the surface. none of my favorite features are even listed here, and the cyanogen settings menu has literally hundreds (thousands?) of additional modifications you can make to your device.
i flashed cm7 for the first time about a month ago, and i won't ever be able to run sense again. i've been converted

start here for a very small list of features... http://www.cyanogenmod.com/about/features
but this list barely scratches the surface. none of my favorite features are even listed here, and the cyanogen settings menu has literally hundreds of additional modifications you can make to your device.
i flashed cm7 for the first time about a month ago, and i won't ever be able to run sense again. i've been converted

yeah tons of features you only wish other roms had most of the time. I love the media track skip via the volume buttons with the screen off (similar to what blackberry does). Makes it way easier to switch songs or repeat one when you are running.
Its cause we want android without all the battery hogging and performance issues associated with crap like motoblur, sense, touchwiz etc. Plus cm7 has so much more features than being basically a asop rom. Its provides a lot of customization with your phone, which is what andrioid is all about.

Everything just works on CM7. I can use wimotes for my emulators.

I like the simplicity of stock-ish Android and all the tweaks and customizations CM offers. Sense is nice and all but way too heavy for my enjoyment.
I've only used CM7 on my nook color and was very impressed by its responsiveness and options. I heard of using Android OS's with overlapping UI but I figured this would only hamper on the overall user experience. I'm def open to different versions of Android for tablets. Any suggestions?
Hello my name is _________, and I'm addicted to CM7..............
Another cool factor is that it's available for so many different phones. I had CM7 on my EVO with Sprint. When I got my Thunderbolt I immediately rooted it and flashed CM7. There is a CM7 build for every major carrier in the U.S., So as long as you chose a supported phone your not stuck with some crappy user interface or an older version of Android. The main reason I chose the Thunderbolt over other Verizon 4G phones was that there was a CM7 ROM for it, but then again I'm an addict.

really? Then why are there all these threads about what is broken on cm7?
to prove my point of cm7 not being all that great on the thunderbolt, from page 1 of the thunderbolt general forums right now:

Some of my favorite features:
- skip tracks w/vol keys
- swipe notification bar to adjust brightness
- lockscreen gestures
- custom long press home/menu/search options
- long press back to kill current app
- hundreds of themes easily switched via Theme Chooser
- incoming calls in background when screen on
- permission management
- any app to sd
- built in performance and overclocking settings
...just to name a few. The real question is why do so many people have such a deep hatred of CM7? If you don't like the ROM you don't like it. Why make such a big stink out of it? If others want to like it then let them be

i remember putting CM on the first phone i rooted, the MyTouch 3G... and it was the only one i ever used on that phone. This time around, i've experimented and tried out just about every single ROM for the TB. This time i would say that Synergy is my fav only because i managed to get better battery life with it then CM7(and its overclocked).
that plus, i know its ridiculous but i prefer for the green light to come on when the battery is at 100%, not 90%(yes i know that's just how AOSP ROMs are). im just use to going "oh green light, time to unplug".

who says we hate cm7? I just said it wasn't the best thunderbolt ROM. It's quite buggy as far as cm7 builds go.
I guess my point is that if this is your first time using cm7, would you be defending it as much.

Like I said, if you like it you like it. If you don't you don't. Starting threads calling out a particular ROM seems a little haterish.

I think he was just looking for pros and cons of the ROM more than calling it out.
Thread is not titled
"CM7 Sucks!"
I rarely use CM, but I think it is a really good ROM, with a good team behind it. Also, basically anyone who is into rooting/romming/modding their Android phone owes something to the CM team, in one way or another. I personally don't like it because, and this is hard to explain, it is almost too good. Lol. It feels like a stock, out-of-box software. I know there are tons of settings, and it runs great often times, but it just lacks the pizazz that I'm looking for. Not like overly flashy drag your phone down kinda stuff, but just a little something extra.
That being said, I, again, really appreciate the rom. I am currently using it on my Thunderbolt until we get some ROMs based off of the OTA if it ever comes, and have also used it on my D1 and Incredible.

[Q] Will a new ROM be all I ever dreamed of....?

Hi all! I'm a noob to the site and a noob to smartphone modifications, so please forgive me for my questions and concerns. I've used forums for years on many topics and found the knowledge base to be incredible, so I hope you guys will help me out, too.
So, while my Skyrocket has generally worked very well for the past 2+ years, I have always felt it's not living up to its potential. I've read numerous threads on many forums to see what my fellow Rocketeers were doing. I think I've come to the conclusion that flashing a new ROM is the way to go, but I am a bit wary since I've never done this nor know anyone who has. My thinking goes along the same lines as my experience with computers... If you buy a Dell, HP, etc., you get the garbage that the manufacturer bundles in along with Windows. If you wipe the HD and install your own clean copy of Windows, you can usually get better performance without all that other stuff. Hence, the idea for a new ROM for the phone.
A few things have me wondering, though... There seem to be more ROMs available than flavors of Linux! I know choice will end up being a personal thing. My goal is really simple... I just want a clean OS that is stable, efficient, and runs the basic functions I am accustomed to. So, I am not looking to experiment or push the envelope. I want a phone that doesn't crash at the worst possible time, and one that can actually make phone calls! I assume that I will still be able to use the Google Play store to download apps (after installing the plugin thingy). My phone is from AT&T and is unlocked. Will it say unlocked after flashing a new ROM? Will Visual Voicemail still work? I occasionally use FoxFi to create a mobile hotspot. Will I still be able to use it? Or do other ROMs already have this feature unlocked (or bypassed)? I use apps on my phone mostly for email (Yahho/Gmail), calendar, FB, Instagram, YouTube, taking photos/video, viewing forums, and the like, besides making phone calls. In other words, what should I expect from a new ROM? How will things be different? I'm really trying to gauge if this is a worthwhile endeavor for me.
Sorry for the long post. I appreciate your opinions and experience.
It's always worthwhile.
The Skyrocket, to me, was always a case of OEM software that limited its potential. If you really sit down and tweak it, custom ROM, new governor, overclock, it's a beast of a phone that can still keep pace today. You'll have to balance performance with battery life--overclocking and switching to a more aggressive governor doesn't do you any favors there, and some ROMs are better about battery life than others. It's a great phone with a lot of life left, though, much more so than the vanilla S2 because the Rocket has LTE capability.
To hit your other questions, any app that is available on the Play Store will work. If a ROM needs a second gapps flash to get the Play Store (along with everything else Google ships) back, that will be made available and is a very easy install. I've never unlocked a phone, but I don't believe that a new ROM would lose that. Wait for someone else to reply, but I'd be shocked if it did. As far as what you want, there's a ROM to suit any desires. Most ROMs are pretty basic and look and feel like you'd expect a Skyrocket to. Some are designed to feel a little more like iOS, some are designed to be stripped-down (and faster as a result), and some are based on stock firmware and very closely replicate the original experience. It's up to you to read through the dev forum for the Rocket and pick the experience that's best for you.
As far as how difficult it is, spend a couple hours reading about flashing, how it works and why it works. Once you have that basic understanding of it and can follow a few simple instructions that are pretty universal across ROMs, you're set.
Well, I'm giving this a try tonight. Fingers crossed!
One piece of advice: when you pick a new rom from "Android development" read the WHOLE thread associated with that rom, with special attention the the first couple of pages. Make sure you understand the process and any potential pitfalls.
First rom I tried I spent probably six hours reading. It was worth it.
Success!!! I now have the latest CandyKat running! It ended up being not too bad at all. Now I need to figure out how things are different from the AT&T Jelly Bean this replaces.
Thanks for the advice and thanks to everyone who contributes to the site,
I have Kandykat. It seems to be a good solid rom. The Google Now launcher is buggy though. I changed to Nova launcher. Other than that it's been fine.
Thanks for the tips, Chris. I've been using Launcher3. What's the difference between these launchers? Everything seems to be running fine on my rocket now. Any tips on increasing battery life? Any tips on some nice customization?
Google Now launcher seems to have the annoying habit of forgetting the screen setup (app positioning) during reboot. Launcher 3 also exhibited the same problem. Launchers are a matter of taste, but Nova launcher seems solid and looks right to me. YMMV. It's easy to try a few.
