Black screen with phone exclamation triangle connecting to computer? - Verizon Droid Charge

Bricked two stock ee4 phones today flashing jt's voodoo root kernal using the odin in pda mode. Any idea what this screen is and how I can stay away/fix it? after flashing it would fail and stay in this screen. I could get them into download mode but odin would just fail. Tried using the link to the team black hat back up and samsung restore program but that also didn't work the screen would not go away. Any ideas? Thanks

That's what the phone will show whenever you tried to flash something in Odin and it failed. Its a soft brick, nothing major to worry about, you just have to figure out how to reflash the phone. Honestly, nothing you do is a major problem to worry about, as long as you can still get the phone into download mode.
Odin can be really finicky, try using different usb ports. Or even uninstall the device drivers for the USB host and let them reinstall. Remember to close Odin and open it again each time you try, and make sure to check the hash of jt's package you're trying to flash, you may simply have gotten a bad download. Failing that, you may need to try a different computer, or give Heimdall a shot. I'm not sure why these USB flashing utilities can be so finicky, but they can. Rest assured though that the problem is almost certainly not with your phone as long as you can put it in download mode. All you've gotta do is keep trying to find the right combination of flashing program, computer/OS, and usb port, and make sure you have a good file. I know it sounds silly and like a bunch of work, but at least the phones are okay.

I'm used to using odin with my fascinate idk why this phone is kicking my butt ha luckily verizon replaced both phones for me bc they were unable to flash them back to stock as well. His kernal worked once on the first phone then the recovery did the soft brick when I tried to just flash his kernal on the second one it soft bricked again. Thanks for the reply I'm just worried bc I didn't buy my phone from verizon I was lucky enough to have them replace it

Thanks very much for pointing this out. I had played with my phone for several hours after soft-bricking it in this manner before finding this post. Reading this made a light bulb go on over my head, and I tried again plugging my phone's USB cable into another port - one directly connected to my PC's mainboard. My flashing problems with Odin magically went away! Not sure I'd have considered this without your feedback.

PC wont recognize Infuse in Odin at all!!!!!

Long story short, something happend when I was trying to flash Gingerbread.
Tried restoring my last back-up and things went south. The only mode the phone will go into, is Download Mode. If I try to turn it on, it will say Samsung then go to thousands of colored dots. It just keeps cycling that.
Have tried everything to get my PC to recognize the Infuse. 5 Different cables, all the USB ports, unistall and reinstall countless drivers, etc.
Ive literally been on the computer all day with no luck whatsoever.
Hopefully you guys can help out.

what gingerbread did you flash? sounds like you didnt get a package with bootloaders. also if you tried uckk4 it's a fail right off the bat. it is corrupted. look for the kj4 package. the bootloaders are there. then if you must you can update to the kk3 version.
the failure to connect is just windows failing at being an operating sustem and samsung failing at writing drivers. it's common, keep trying. open odin, pull the battery, plug in the cable, hold down the volumes and slide the battery back in. sometimes that helps. wait for windows to recognize the phone and install drivers.

if you want to be able to flash with reliability install the latest ubuntu with the wubi installer (no repartitioning on your computer) then get heimdall for linux debian. no drivers needed in tht combination. ive never had an issue. not even ever.
I had this same issue the first time I tried it, as well, but I pulled up USB Deview and deleted all the instances in which my phone had come in contact with my PC. Then I reinstalled the drivers using Keis.
Have you tried GingerReal yet? I'm running v1.1.9 as of last night and loving it.
Not sure where everyone else has been getting their drivers, but if you get the drivers from Kies Mini You'll be absolutely fine getting Odin to Recognize your phone.
I had an issue once where Odin wasn't recognizing my infuse so what I did was go to device manager and just updated them from there and it worked so give that a try

How exactly do I install the drivers from Kies?
Do I go to Tools, Install Driver? or do I just plug the phone up and see if it recognizes it?

Alrighty, downloaded all the drivers from kies. Also did USBDeview and deleted all the times my phone has connected on the computer, still nothing at all.
The computer just wont pick it up at all. What am I doing wrong. I really dont see where I could mess this up.
Its starting to irritate me a little now. I just dont understand why its saying its not connected or anything.

Did you Download Kies Mini and Install It to get the Samsung drivers you need?
You can find the download for Kies Mini Here: http://ars.samsung.com/customer/usa...ID=2&PROD_SUB_ID=557&PROD_ID=560&AT_ID=341559
Yeah, I have Kies. It said it downloaded the Drivers. Ill try the one you gave me the link to though.
Even when you load your phone through Odin sometimes it will take up to a minute for Odin to find the Com Port for your phone.
Edit: I would also try to reboot your computer after installing Kies Mini. Sometimes new drivers install during windows boot up.

Alright, I tried the Mini and still nothing.
Just to make it clear, I pull the battery, hook up the USB cable, Hold the Vol buttons down, put the battery back in and then the Download Screen comes up. Is that the screen that I need to be at so the computer recognizes the phone? Cause I go to that screen and and it doesnt pick it up at all.

Yes put it in Download mode, then Pull out Battery, Unplug USB cable, (The phone should be off now) put the battery back in, Hold down the 2 volume buttons while plugging back in the USB cable and it should come up with the needed screen to get into the correct Download Mode to flash your phone.

How long does it take

How long does it typically take to complete the flash...Odin has been working for about 15 min now and the last message in the message list is...

Well, it could take 15 mins, but you would see some progress of the green "progress bar" under the top left box. The first steps seem slowest to me.
I just hot home from dinner and this is still the screen I get.

Is there any you're of loading bar on your phone? From the looks of it nothing is loading on the Odin screen

It looks like it never actually started to flash anything, so it shouldn't hurt a thing. It's actually incredibly hard to actually brick a Charge, short of flashing a firmware file from a different phone.
I kept the battary in to keep it in recovery mode......Trying Odin 1.82 now...but still looks like it is giving me the same error even in the USB port on the back of my computer...SIGH...
Hmm and u do have the Samsung usb drivers installed correct? Typically you want to use a rear USB port to flash. Honestly if none of the USB Ports are working I would install the usb drivers to another PC install Odin enter download mode and try again...seems like is having problems communicating through your USB port
Sent from my SCH-I510
Yeah...they are installed...It auto installed when I hooked the phone into the computer...
I tried to reinstall and it said they were already installed so I know there are there...
Im seriously afraid to restart this thing in fear it wiped something and is not going to reboot correctly.
I think you will be fine reason being is that your flash never began on the phone. Files should be left untouched. I would close odin, remove battery, place phone back into download mode by plugging in the usb while holding down the volume down button and then put your battery in once download mode is shown restart odin v1.82 try again. You may also try to redownload the ep4d all in one file. File corruption is also a possibility
Got it to finally work...restarted my phone got it back into recovery and eventually worked...thanks for all the patience and help guys...
Awesome glad to hear!

How I fixed my totally bricked Infuse

Here's the scenario.
I flashed AOKPb40 when I wasn't home. My phone was stuck on the Samsung boot screen. I tried 3 finger recov... no good. Still stuck on boot screen. Removed battery, waited a few minutes, 3 finger... still stuck on boot screen. I figured I'd wait till I get home and Odin back to stock. By time I got home my battery was dead. It wouldn't charge. It was on the charger for 2 hours and no go. I plugged the USB into PC and entered download mode. I figured what the hell... lets give it a shot. Launched Odin, started JScotts UCLB-Root-Modded Odin Package. Everything was running then... boom. Phone shut down right in the middle of FACTORYRFS. Pulled battery and tried the whole thing again... guess what... same thing. So I put my phone back on the charger and my screen showed a phone icon with a triangle with an exlcamation point and a PC icon. I thought "Oh Crap".
So here is how I fixed it.
I downloaded qkster's Heimdall One-Click package. I read up on how to use Heimdall and I was taken to a download page to download Heimdall suite. After many failed attempts to load the Heimdall package in Heimdall Front End, I kept getting a file size error. I googled the error and found qkster's re: to a guy with the same problem. Turns out the One-Click package is self executable, no need for the Heimdall front end suite. So I launched qkster's Heimdall package and it actually completed the flash! However, when the phone rebooted I was shown a partial CWM recov menu. I hit reboot and it kept taking me to the same CWM menu.
Now that I can get past the screen with the phone-caution-pc thing I tried using Odin with JScott's UCLB package. Odin finally worked all the way through, but with the same result as Heimdall, CWM Recov loop. I figured I was missing boot loaders. Flashed through Odin and still no good.
I now went all the way back to stock using GTG's Ultimate Unbrick. Voila! My phone is back! Holy toledo, 4 hours of trouble shooting and I finally have a working phone again.
Summary, Odin doesn't complete and you're stuck, here's what to do.
Use qksters Heimdall
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1629079
If stuck in Recov loop. Use GTG's Ultimate Unbrick
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1116251
I hope my long painful recovery story will help someone out.
Sounds like you just needed an unbrick solution with a pit file for repartition. You could have used just the UCLB3 Unbrick with the pit file, and you would have been set.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1705260
Still, glad you worked it out. This is why it's a good thing that we have many options that work via Heimdall and Odin. When one isn't doing it on your phone, just try another. We just have to be careful not to call our way of fixing it the only right way or the best way. Several ways exist, so we truly have an unbrickable device. Well, unbrickable as long as you don't bork a bootloader flash.
Edit: By the way, that phone-caution-pc thing is still download mode.

Well said jscott, and glad you got it working. I would also add, that it would appear from the initial symptoms, that maybe you just lost recovery. Several roms, including uniporn have packages that can fix that. In the uniporn thread it is in post 3.
Also, I think there is a good lesson here too for others and that would be that it would be extremely wise to know your way around Odin and heimdall before embarking on that very first flash.
Again, this is just for future reference should someone read this later on. Glad to hear you are back up and running.
Sent from my SGH-I997 using Tapatalk 2
Good work.
As Yuma have stated, when you lost recovery, flashing this kernel would have brought you back to working cwm to flash the rom also:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=25526654&postcount=3
And when you have completed the uclb3, you could have finished it with the boot loader flash and then do a factory reset. After that, flash which every insecure kernel to get back recovery to flash what ever you wanted.
As long as you can get back into download mode, you can use any of the restore process.
Thanks all for the follow up. The biggest problem was the dead battery. After I finally got this sicker up and running with the phone plugged in my battery was at 8%. The damn thing kept crashing while in download mode. But yes, this is not the only way. I had to use qksters heimdall to at least get the phone to boot. Once I got to boot into the recovery boot loop issue I used gtg unbrick.
If it wasn't for all the posts and threads from you guys I would've been screwed. Oh, and to top it all off, xda was down when I first started down the road. Long freaking day!

The first problem I had was Odin was crashing during the factoryrfs stage. That's why I tried heimdall. I just needed something to get loaded so I could start flashing. I didn't think about going straight to uclb, would've saved me a step or two

If you were using something like my earlier rooted UCLB3 Odin options, those don't have a pit. Those aren't intended as much as an unbrick/restore option as they are for a quick way to get to rooted UCLB3. Hanging on factoryfs.rfs suggests you needed repartitioning, and the UCLB3 Unbrick provides this, since it has a pit file. The other Odin package wasn't working because you needed a pit file to restore in your situation. That's why the GTG Unbrick ended up fully restoring your phone; it has a pit. It or the UCLB3 Unbrick should have worked to "unbrick" your phone right after the first failed Odin attempt. Also, as noted by Yuma and qkster, an option available before that first Odin flash was to restore just the kernel/recovery. That option became unavailable after the first failed Odin flash. Still, many options are available, and we're glad you found a combination that worked.

I have done everythig possible that can be done taking the battery out, charging it from wall charger and charging it from usb port. letting it wait for 2 days before messing with it. One day it went one step further to the white screen where the at&t logo forms and then it reboots again. I have not done a master reset or whatever its called because I want my pics of videos and contacts. The phone has been in the otter box from day one so it looks brand new and its over a year old. I could care less about the phone once I get my pics and videos off of it I will not mess with it again. Is it possible to save pics videos and contacts? I am not sure what you mean when you ask which ROM.

Okay, since you don't want to do your own thread. Read the information in the following link and follow it to the letter. This should put you back to stock and if everything works right, you will be able to get your info off the phone.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1524081
If you don't know how to put the phone in download mode, take your battery out, hold down the volume +/- buttons but no power button, put the batter back in and then plug the USB (connected to a computer that has the drivers from the link installed) into the phone. Do not disconnect the phone otherwise, you may end up with a brick.

[Q] Help Me I really effed up!

Good Morning Everyone, This is my first post. I try to never post just read. I have read and read but to no avail. I have a AT&T Samsung infuse 4g. it WAS running froyo. What I mean by WAS, is that I was trying to install the modded 3e recovery so I could install clockworkmod recovery. During this process I read that I need to mount the /system partition as read/write I did this using the tool box that was created by some of your developers. It is awsome by the way. Well I did that and put a new recovery file in the /bin but it did not work as the website claimed so I thought well I should delete the old one. Bad Idea when I did the reboot it stopped me at the samsung screen. I tried to hard reboot it pulled the battery talked to it with a really kind voice and nothing happend. So I decided to use GEG's Ultimate Unbrick because this has worked for me in the past when i have messed up. So I put my phone into download mode and started the process with Odin. And here is where it gets bad.... one of my children was talking with me during the process and he decided to unplug my phone.. AHH EFFFFFF! I thought. Well when I tried to fix it it was to late. My phone will no longer turn on or even pretend to start. I am broke and cannot afford a new phone plus my wife would kill me seeing we have 6 children and it is right before christmas if I came home with a new galaxy note 2 Please Please can any one help a desperate dad with a busted Samsung Infuse. Thank you all for this awesome website that has taught me alot.. Please dont kill me for posting something someone has already posted because I could not find anything that was helpful for this situation with my phone.

Okay now I have really done it this time. So I worked a 18 hour day and thought well instead of getting some rest i will install Gingerbread on my infuse. To make a long story short while I was using odin to install it paused for a long time at the format stage, so I thought well I will just turn it off even though it says not to and then.....well it did a rainbow colored screen I tried to figure it out last night with no luck. So I have been working on it all morning the rainbow screen is gone but now it just goes from black to all white screen. I have tried every possible way to get into download mode with no luck. Am I screwed or what? Does anyone have any suggestions. If I am out of luck does anyone know if bestbuy's warrenty covers rooted phones that are [email protected] bricked?

Qkster its a honor to have you comment on my thread, Unfortunately Im not boot looping to the samsung logo it is just a black then white then black back and forth taunting me with every blink. I did read the thread about the power button earlier though and that is unfortunately not the fix either. I do appreciate the input you guys really do try and help! Maybe you can answer a question for me is there a way to get to the phone through command prompt? I really need this phone fixed. My wife has been telling me I shouldnt be messing around with it because im gonna break it. I really dont want to tell her she was right. I will never hear the end of it lol!

You're too kind, Merk.
I'm not sure what happened to your phone. The Infuse is pretty sturdy. Flashing should not cause much of an issue. The faulty power button and corrosion of the circuit board were the most I've seen reported.
This is what I use to force the phone into download mode:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-USB-J...665854?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item3f201c4f3e
Once in DL mode, it's a matter of choosing Odin or Heimdall to bring it back to stock.
One other thought, try a different battery as well.
I had the same exact problem. If the only thing the phone will do is go into download mode, then Samsung will fix it (if your still under warranty). They fixed mine and sent it back to me. Then I tried to flash another ROM on there and while it was flashing, I went to the store, and when I came back it said failed. Then it would only go into the other download mode. The one that has this (phone...!...PC). It wouldnt show up on odin 1.7 anymore. So I ended up trying a USB cable for my HTC evo v, and the drivers installed, then it popped up on Odin. I used G2G's Ultimate Unbrick (dude is a f-ng genius, all credit goes to him) and instead of putting the pit, PDA, and phone file on there and flashing, I flashed one at a time......then....I went back and flashed all at once and everything worked perfect. If your still having trouble with it, I can tell you exactly how I did it, and maybe that will work for you. Sorry to but in on this post and sorry it was so long of a reply. I just no what its like when you half brick an infuse. Mine was like that for 6 months because I couldn't get any computer to recognize it. But anyway, I hope I was helpful.

okay I tried but that didnt work either. Can you go ahead and explain "exactly" what you did maybe it will work!
Thanks again for everyones help!
Ok first I downloaded the unbrick package from this website. I downloaded the drivers for the infuse (not sure exactly where I got them from). I would just Google them. Then I tried every USB port on the laptop. Then switched cables and it finally worked. Opened Odin 1.7 and clicked pit, then flashed. Then I unplugged it, took the battery out and put back in and tried to boot. Didn't work. Then flashed PDA. Did same steps as before and still didn't work. Then flashed phone file. Tried to boot and still didn't work. Then I flashed all 3 files at once. Also, not sure if you know or not but the only thing that should be checked in Odin is f: reset time. Then the phone booted up and it stayed on at&t screen for about 5 minutes then finally came on. Also, you could also try to flash this other PDA file on there. I have the link saved on my computer but I'm not at home right now so I'll have to post that later. In easier steps
1. Put phone in Download mode and plug into pc.
2. Run Odin as admin and only thing checked is f reset time.
3.Flash pit then try to boot
4. Flash PDA then try to boot
5. Flash phone then try to boot
6. Flash all three at once
7. After flash While in download mode, unplug USB cable, take battery out and put back in
8. Reboot phone.
Sorry everything is all jumbled, I just got back to my home state from a road trip and I'm running on about 6 hours of sleep in 3 days. I hope this works for you. Also, there is a video on YouTube of a unbrick service for the phone. Its $30. I personally would not try it but its just an idea if you would want to.

I had the issue where I had the phone, the exclamation mark, and the computer symbol (The Black Screen of Death: Imaged Attached), that is all it would show when I turned it on. I thought the phone was completely bricked until I did the following, which put it into a hidden download mode and allowed ODIN to recognize it. I DID NOT NEED TO BUY A USB JIG.
1. Make sure you have Odin already downloaded and ready to go.
2. Remove the SIM and SD Cards
3. Load up Odin and make sure it is up and running on the computer. DO NOT plug your phone into the computer yet.
4. Reinstall the Battery and plug the phone to the USB cable to the computer.
5. Hold down both Volume keys and then push and hold the power button
6. Keep holding the buttons until it goes to black, KEEP HOLDING A SECOND TIME until it goes to black and the icon comes back on.
7. Now when it goes Black the second time release the Power button only.
8. You should now be in Download mode. The key is holding the buttons, letting it go to black once, and then letting it go to black again, and then release only the power button while your fingers are still on the volume buttons.
9. Now Odin should recognize the phone on a Com port (turn yellow).
10. You are now ready to return it back to stock.
I hope this helps!
did you ever get your infuse fixed man?

Yes I tried to make my own jig but my fat shaky hands could get the end of the wires to hit the correct contacts so I ordered one online and that got me into download mode! Now I'm running jelly bean! Thanks to everyone that helped out I love you guys!!!! PS. Don't skip backing up your efs folder!! Unless you want a headache. But with all my problems it has taught me a lot. My number one tip is to read read read there is always an answer! Thanks again everyone! Always hit the thanks button its the least we can do for all of these brilliant hard working developers.

Stuck on download screen, but not in download mode.

I searched for three days before posting this, hoping for an easy answer. I tried to flash the GOV33 Lean Performance ROM last week and ran into a few problems. I followed the instructions and wiped the phone back to factory, clearing everything several times. I then tried to flash the rom as directed, but it acted like there was no phone present, so due to a lack of free time I gave it up as a bad job and started using the sidekick normally with the fresh wipe. No problems until yesterday. For some reason, for the entire day, the phone would not connect to the Tmobile network. So, when I got home I held down the power button to reboot it, and when it rebooted, it showed the downloading screen with the yellow triangle and the android with the shovel. Since then it has done and shown nothing else. I can't get my computer to recognize it to Odin it back to factory, and no button combination does anything. I am totally stuck and am inches from calling this phone bricked and letting my son shoot it.
Well I'm somewhat of a noob when it comes to Samsung phones, even with all the crazy **** I've done to this one occasionally I'm at a loss. Is it possible you have a sticky button somewhere? Like forcing download mode even after a battery pull? Also do you for sure have the proper drivers installed or rules(for Linux) to use download mode? Have you tried hiemdall? Have you tried a different USB cable or different computer?

This may be due to faulty odin . I'm not a wizard hell I look to ric an this wizard above me for help ahah xD
Ill ask a few questions first
Can the plug be falty an not reading the phone?
Are any of the buttons "sticky" in the term when you press is down it doesn't give the nice load click but kinda slowly pushes it?
Did you try this way for odin vvvvvvv? (Its my personal way I odin as it doesn't read most times on my old pc)
But yea my phone doesn't get reconized for awhile when trying t odin what I do is go into download try to odin if it doesn't work I pull the baatter an put it back in which will lead to odin with a different image then from there you want to try to odin with bootloarders on/or off if it fails turn it to the opposite (so if you turned it on an failed turn it off)

Well, after trying multiple things, none of which worked, I finally found success with the Heimdall one click total wipe. she lives again.
