So I picked up my Inspire this morning. Here are my initial thoughts coming from a Captivate with a custom ROM (where everything, including GPS works perfectly).
Screen: better contrast and brighter colors on the Captivate. screen size doesn't make that much difference.
Weight: Inpire is HEAVY compared to the Captivate. And bulkier.
Speed: Inspire is faster. Loading maps and Earth for example
Apps and Widgets: in most cases, Inspire wins hands down. Email and contacts are so much better IMHO
Camera: Captivate takes better pictures and has anti-shake. Inspire has better post production enhancements which makes final picture better on the Inspire.
Video: Captivate wins hands down. Was a replacement for my regular camera. Inspire is choppy, especially if you are moving. HTC doesn't have thus right yet.
Video player / playback: interesting one this one. Stock video player app better on the Captivate (much). But using 3rd party, like Rockplayer, is much better on Inpsire. Still nothing as good as Core on my HD2, but that's another story! Should be better than it is on Inspire.
Typing: both are excellent. I typed this on the Inspire landscape and its been a while since I didn't feel fear at typing something so long on a screen.
Sound: Captivate wins hands down. Inspire is a major disappointment after the Captivate, for both in call and speakerphone. HTC still needs to fix this.
Data: no question Inspire is faster where I live (NY).
Boot speed: same. Slow.
Battery life: too early to say. I had a custom ROM which meant 3 batteries a s day on the Captivate.
Battery door: WHAT THE FU## WAS HTC THINKING? Inspire is a disaster. Feels like I will break it every time I open the door (and with that small battery its inevitable that I will need to do so). No way you could change that on the move. Madness.
Overall: Inspire is a better overall experience. Since the day I got the Captivate I have tried to make it have the look and feel of HTC Sense! But I will miss weight, screen brightness, camera, video and sound of Captivate.

Over all, I agree. The battery is not much of a concern to me ad I charge at my desk at work and have a car charger, though. Same goes for sound. I am either in my office or our datacenter. In my office, I can hear the vibration in my pocket of my jacket sitting on my coat rack. In the datacenter, I hear nothing but three hundred servers and large san arrays.
Those are really the only areas we differ.

Thinking of switching to the inspire myself. I have a real love hate relationship with the Captivate. HTC is generally great build quality

I also switched from the Inspire. I've only had it for a day, and I already feel that it was worth every penny to make the switch.
@OP Thanks for putting this up. I'd like to hear from more people who jumped to Inspire from the Captivate!
On a side note... would you rather be inspired? Or captivated? Seriously, these phones are getting some epic naming schemes! Oh wait...
I want to add that this is the first time in a while that I feel satisfied with a device out of the box.
I don't feel i need to tinker with anything...
OK that parts not true really, is it! I HAVE to root it so I can sideload, remove bloatware and tether for free. etc. here we go again...

i think I would rather be DESIRED!
I'm thinking very seriously about calling AT&T and asking them to switch me to the Inspire. I've had 2 different captivates and this one has random shut downs and a crap GPS, just like my first one.
I'm Inspired!
Hi folks. After having 2 Captivates and both of them being buggy, I decided, hey I'm still within the 30 day return policy with Costco, why not? Plus I heard from many disgruntled folks about how Samsung is hard to deal with. So, I went and got the Inspire and its like night and day! The display, the calender, the email, not to mention the boot up times and speed are all above par compared to the Captivate...I'm very happy with it. Now to find a case!
I made the switch and am never looking back

Well I am coming back from one day on the dark side...
On a whim yesterday I went to AT&T store and picked up an Inspire. Tonight after work I will be taking it back.
The big deal breaker for me was that it doesn't support BT voice dialing, to my knowledge none of the HTC droid phones do??. The "enhancement" has been hanging out there for a year or better and it's not fixed. I tried the stock voice dialer, and ones from multiple other sources but it just wouldn't kick off the VD from any BT device.
You can root the Inspire (read downgrade ROM and root), but then have to install a diff ROM (the only one for now) since the root process breaks the sound and the source I'd bet will be a few months behind so you can't yet "play" with it like you can the captivate. Big thanks to attn1 though for the work he's done to progress it as far as it is, ON LAUNCH DAY.
All in all I agree with the OPs opinions and findings above and it's not a bad device. That being said I have been able to overcome most if not all of the issues with the captivate since there is SO MUCH development being done around it. I've had/have 3 of them. Sent one back for sleep death, have two now, one as daily driver and one as a dev phone and neither of them have any real issues.
A lot of people have had issues with the captivate I know but for me it's a decent device and is a lot more mature for someone that wants to have a toy as well as a phone, and the captivate just "feels" better to me. Not feels better in my hands... but the whole experience is just better for me.

I would say give devs a chance on this phone, it is still brand new. I remember the early days of Captivate development, there was a whole bunch of nuthin'.
As for BT voice dial, I have heard good things about Vlingo in car. Give it a shot, at least.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong I know things will progress with the device and it won't be long before there will be ROMS, Kernels etc. I just learned my lesson of not getting a device too soon.
I actually tried Vlingo and Choice Dialer... IMO they were horrible compared to the voice dialer on the captivate and they also didn't work with my BT in my truck. I have a BlueStar 2010 in my truck and it works great with the captivate to initiate calls from the OnStar buttons and use it purely via voice. I couldn't get it to work with the Inspire unless I physically touched the phone first, which is the point of my whole setup. I can simply get in the truck and make or receive calls without ever touching the phone. It's no reason whatsoever for anyone else to shy away from the phone, that's just a deal breaker for me.
Huge upgrade. Much better battery life + gps. And sense is so much better.

Gotcha, I know what that feeling is like. I went the the BB Bold 9700 from the 3GS. I hated it overall. Wound up going back to the iPhone.
Which is really sad for the BES administrator...
I just got back from the corp store with my Inspire!!!
Now to figure out the best way to sell my craptivate.....
I want to see some nice side by side photos of the Captivate vs. Inspire... Front, side view, back, etc etc
All you guys switching from the Captivate, how much are you paying? I talked with AT&T this morning and they said I would have to wait until April and then I could get the Inspire for 99 dollars plus a 75 dollar equipment fee.
I got the Inspire for my wife and I want it for myself ...... So if there is something I can do to get it faster, that would be great.
Was out today and thought I'd stop by and check out the infuse...
I spent about 5 minutes goin over it...
The screen looks awesome....
Touchwiz looks cheap...
GPS could not lock on my location..but the Atrix and the Inspire on display had no trouble at all..
I may be a little jealous if the display and battery size of the infuse...otherwise I'm stickin with the inspire...

good there really isn't a plus from other galaxy s phones. Sure there's a better camera, bigger screen, ffc, and a better screen but what's hardware without software?

I messed with one for five minutes as well. Salesman was really hyping it up how it was the best phone on at&t right now. I agree the screen is nice but I still prefer the inspire.
I feel just like that whenever I look at my wife’s Galaxy Captivate’s bright screen, until I try to navigate that damn Touchwiz. Grass will always be greener on the other side when it comes to technical toys. But with all the things I can do with my Inspire 4G, I can do without the faster CPU, front facing camera, and the extra .2 inches of high def screen until next Inspire (something comparable to) comes out.

if we sell enough of them, samsung gives us goodies, we win points that we can redeem for electronics and such...
so you're damn right its the best phone we have at AT&T right now..
(i still use my inspire and i think its way better than both infuse and atrix, much more solid built etc)
but yea.. when the next phone comes out that gives us salesmen something good in return, guess what.. it's gonna be the best phone you can buy for your money!! i guarantee it!! *wink*
The Infuse looks very interesting to me.
I checked out a non-working demo unit at Costco and it's about the same size as the Inspire and the screen was noticeably bigger. Bravo Samsung for coming out with a 4.5" screen phone and using as much real estate on the front of the phone as possible.
The GPS lock problem... hmmm... gee Samsung... haven't you learned?
As far as the UI: Come on... most of us hate TouchWiz. That's a given. Just replace it with LauncherPro or ADWLauncher. I bet half of the Inspire users here don't use Sense (though I do and actually like Sense).
Would I trade in my Inspire for the Infuse (I bought from Costco): No. I'm still pissed off at Samsung over the Captivate GPS issues... but if the Infuse turns out to have 100% working hardware and features as advertised it'd be a step in the right direction winning me back. I would recommend it to non-phone obsessed friends who don't care about quick OS updates.
We'll be hearing about any defects or problems within a week if there are any.
I played with one too. Reminded me of my captivate just bigger. kinda cool, but eh. I still prefer my Inspire!

I love sense, and when I had my captivated, everything about it was HTC. notification bar, battery meter, signal meter, app icons, etc. I wasn't phone obsessed as far as updates until I got into Android. So that may change for them.

Samsung's hardware is tempting, but I'll never forget the garbage I (we) went through with the Captivate. Dying earpiece and external speakers (both happened to me on different handsets), sleep death, no GPS, the OTA update that bricked stock phones...all of this and more, and the phone hasn't even been out for a year.
Not only that, but Samsung insulted us by releasing a GPS "fix" app in the market that "restored the GPS to factory settings"...you know, the ones that didn't work in the first place?
I'm not a fanboy and won't spend my money buying products from a company that is all to happy to ass-rape me for giving them business. Apple has the luxury for rabid fanboyism, so no matter what they do, people will still buy their products. Samsung doesn't have that, they just think they do for some reason.
The good side of the Infuse is his unlocked bootloader.
My wife has a Inspire and I have a captivate, I have to say the captivate is really easier to unlock. But I agree with most of you about the captivate, a stock captivate is really not perfect, but I'm running my cappy with Contiuuum 5.4.1 (Android 2.3.3) and I can say bye bye to all the problems, my gps is a dream and my battery time is amazing.
I have a SE Xperia X10 and I'm in the market for a new phone, so I went to my local AT&T store for the Sunday release of the Infuse. I played with it, and with the Inspire, for about an hour.
I came away from the experience thinking my next phone will be an HTC...now if I can only hold out for the upcoming "Holiday." hee hee. Here's why-
1. I have owned Samsungs before, including a brief stint with the Captivate, and I'm unimpressed with the company as far as updates and support.
2. The HTC aluminum unibody case just says "build quality" to me. The infuse felt just like the Captivate in the hand - like flimsy, cheap plastic that should not be used for high-end phones. I know some people want light weight, but come on - few extra grams won't kill ya and it just might save your phone if you're a little rough with it.
3. The Infuse's screen was way too color over-saturated for me. It's bright and clear, but looks surreal to me. I would tire of that in hurry.
4. I could detect no speed or smoothness advantage for the Infuse. Heck, I could load up a custom rom on the Inspire, overclock it conservatively and just beat the snot out of the Infuse... which leads me to....
5. There seems to be a whole lot more developer time and interest in the HTC devices, which means loads more fun for me.
I have both phones with me right now and here are my quick observations between the two phones (Inspire running current version of LeeDroid 2.3.3):
Web browsing: Inspire – Seems to load pages faster and better scrolling.
Camera: Infuse – For some reason the pictures from my Inspire produce a redish look and are too soft, almost out of focus.
Build quality: Inspire – HTC = solid. I don’t notice much difference when carrying them in my pocket as the Infuse is lighter.
Screen: Infuse - However the Inspire is not bad. I could live with both. After looking at the Infuse I do notice a little bit of softness to the Inspire’s text.
Call quality/Handset speaker: Infuse – I have always had an issue with the call quality of HTC devices for my taste. I have to say that the Infuse has one of the best sounding speakers. I would rate it on par with the iPhone 4 or better.
GPS: Infuse – I get a lock in about 10 seconds. Inspire takes about 1 minute with current ROM/Radio.
Battery life: Infuse – But not by much (10 to 15% better).
Speedtests: Infuse – Speed tests seam consistently higher using Speedtest.net (between 4-5 download and 1.5-2 upload).
Battery charging: Inspire – for some reason the Infuse (and most Samsung phones) take forever to fully charge.
Reception: Still need a few more days with the phone but did have an issue with it the very first call. Called AT&T to make a change to my account and dropped the call five times. The lady at AT&T apologized and said that her land line has been dropping a lot of calls lately (WTF?!?!). I should have a conclusion within the next few days.
I’m not going to get into Touchwiz vs. Sense as there are several write-ups on this but based upon the above, I’m leaning towards the Infuse. Call quality is fantastic on my side as well as the other side. I travel a lot so being in airports and cars this is very important for me. The other item is camera quality. Images may be a little oversaturated by they look sharp and I’m no longer to grabbing my wife’s iPhone 4 to take pictures or videos.
Hope this helps anyone looking at both of these devices and let me know if you have any questions.
I may have to reconsider. I spent another day playing with the phones at the ATT shop. I loaded up speedtest on the Inspire, Attrix and Infuse and ran it on each phone about five times. The Infuse consistently beat the others on download and upload. It was close with the Attrix, but the Inspire got its clock cleaned every time.
The screen on the Infuse started to grow on me when I got out of the start screen and its surreal, over the top background and icon colors. When you look at web pages, movies and snapped pictures, it looks amazingly good. The blacks are so very black, even way off axis.
I also played around with the cameras and I have to say that the Infuse is outstanding. Very fast focus and snap and consistently better looking shots...well, could have been the better screen making them appear to be better.
With all the apps coming out now that utilize video chat with the front camera, I don't know if I could go another year or so without one and of course the Infuse has a nice one.
The only down side I had with the Infuse was the build quality. Now that I think about it, it was really the "feel" and the super light weight. Then it dawned on me...duh!...I'm going to put a case on it, so that can be easily corrected.
So now the only thing that I have left to quibble about is the lack of notification lights on the Infuse.....and yet, something tells me that there will be an app or fix that converts some of those other front lights to message notifications. And then of course there's the relative lack of developer input on Samsung devices.
Ok, so do you think I am talking myself into the Infuse?....maybe, just maybe.
Lmao u diss the infuse then come back and suddenly its way better? Little lost in denial

Every Samsung phone I have seen / had my hands on felt poorly made and cheap. Felt like if I touched it the wrong way I would break it! Plus it doesn't have a dual core CPU so I am not seeing the benefit to switching to it and paying $100 more than the Inspire.
Yes indeed. This inspire has fallen off the back of the car and bounced and slid a goodways before realizing that on this narrow road here in mesquite. I picked it up after backtracking and had dust on the screen that's it. And even had it.upstairs and my nephew dropped the phone 1.5 stories and not one crack nor scratch. Btw had a platinum series casing on the whole time.
NO INSPIRES WERE HURT THRU THESE HORRID TIMES

If I wanted a Captivate, I would buy a Captivate. The Infuse is just a stupid phone in my opinion. It's not bad, I'm sure, but it doesn't make sense to buy one with the Holiday and Ma Bell's version of the Galaxy S II right around the corner.

I am going out on a limb here and share my deepest feelings with all of you.
I LOVE my g2x!
There, I said it. I feel a little vulnerable right now... may need a hug.
There is so much anti g2x here and it makes me sad. This is a great phone. Nay, a great big beast of s phone. It has it foibles(bet you don't hear that often) but they will be worked out. I had a troubled phone for a while... reboots, battery heat up, etc... didn't return it, but I kept fiddling with it, removed some apps, messed with settings, trolled the forums and I haven't had a reboot in a week! Runs as smooth as aloe vera lotion now.
I think that people are jumping ship too early, and for the Sensation?!? Really?? That phone is also having issues with reboots and stuff not working... PLUS it is slower, has an iffy screen and runs Sense!
So if you do trade down for that other phone... just go, and stop telling us about it.
Good luck and we'll see you when you come back...

Its a gorgeous piece of hardware, with a really solid cameras, and I'm loving having the speakers in another place than laid flat on the back.
Not being satisfied with the dev support, which is kind of more a privilege than most people here realize, made me realize that having a phone that works more often than not is worth running on Stock(with root and a few choice mods).
Having been around since 1.5 dropped, I thought about what I needed in custom roms then vs what I need now. The G1 needed severe performance boosts to operate like the current crop does on its worst days, apps2sd and keeping an ext partition for caching on was important. I got my power control widget and navigation in 1.6 (I was a big fan of SuperD roms) and I was ecstatic.
Fast forward and I get damn near most of that right out the box. do i need the miscelleaneous features of cm7, like notificationbar power controls? Nope, I can go back to living like I did with my eclair Nexus One(and then with CM6) or my G1.
So comparing the current offerings to just stock, I dont feel like im at a total loss. It's just the way this phones lifespan panned out, and really you cant win them all.
And I am definitely not impressed with the Sensation and Sense3.0. My boss broke the volume key on the store demo the day he opened the box. Dropped it once and the rocker snapped out in the worst way. weird design choices all over that phone.
I really think the dev support will happen when GB drops. Then we can find the new things we didn't know we couldn't live without.
God, remember 1.5? Seems like so long ago... I remember way back when jesusfreke was showing us the what was possible, and when cyan got his cease and desist letter from google... my G1 will always have a special place in my heart...

I love using the G2X and I'm glad I get to keep her. She will be my hacking/gaming phone. Both the G2X and the Sensation have there own problems like you said. I was just lucky enough to get two bug free devices. As said in my review, I think the G2X has a smoother UI and is very responsive. That being said, the. Sensation doesn't even come close until you disable all of those silly animations on Sense. Some games run better on the G2X and some run better on the Sensation. Homerun Hartford 3D for example runs smoother and looks better on the Sensation but dungeon defenders runs smoother on the G2X. Everyone just needs to start making there own decissions and stop making posts like "Bellow Sensation. Bye G2X". I picked the Sensation as my daily driver due to the larger display without being bigger that the G2X. The colors are sharper and appear to pop more on the Sensation but the blacks on the G2X a great. When both devices are sitting right next to each other its unbelievable how muck crisper and clearer the text on the Sensation is. I also use the camera a lot and the Sensation takes much better photos and HD video. Both devices are great but I would say to someone who puts gaming at the top of there smart phone list, get the G2X. If your priority is emailing, web browsing, RSS, ebooks and taking pictures then get the Sensation.

i'm still a fresh new owner of my G2x (got it yesterday). but i've already thrown on 3 custom roms and have decided to stick w/the mcr GB leak (2.3.3) since its more vanilla than CM7. CM7 is just WAY to much extras i don't care for; i wish they had a kitchen sink option like paul's MCR roms do. i love being able to pick and choose what items and tweaks.
anywho, i've been an android owner since the N1 dropped and must say that it almost seems like its more people tinkering with an OS and parts they shouldn't be or don't understand. permission changes on a system file can cause your phone to do some crazy things, i've done it a few times myself (get in a boot loop by renaming a system sound or font, etc)
the G2x's hardware specs made me drop the full off contract price on it. i'm just hoping we see the GB roms mature even more, hopefully once the official GB hits; we'll still have some devs w/one that will update their roms.
sure would love to see a Honeycomb port. this thing has the specs.

Another satisfied G2X owner right here. Got mine off some guy on Craigslist before I'd read about all the issues people were having. I think I only kept it stock for maybe 1 day before rooting it and flashing roms on it. I've been using it for over a month now and I haven't once regretted buying it.

Its a gorgeous piece of hardware, with a really solid cameras, and I'm loving having the speakers in another place than laid flat on the back.
Not being satisfied with the dev support, which is kind of more a privilege than most people here realize, made me realize that having a phone that works more often than not is worth running on Stock(with root and a few choice mods)

Have you tried the Ultimate G2X rom?
It has been my daily driver for a couple of weeks now and I have had absolutely no issues with it. It's based on Froyo so all of the hardware works as it should (no wonky battery issues, HDMI works, GPS works, etc). It has a very nice dark theme to it (I never liked the light colored stock Froyo), and is very snappy and responsive.
It's a very nice rom indeed. Very fast. Very stable. And everything works.

Very satisfied G2x owner here. All around the best cellphone i have ever owned.

+1 for the Ultimate Rom. I've been using it since the day it was released with zero issues. But...Faux's Rom is starting to look VERY interesting...
I've been a pretty vocal complainer about this phone. I've gotten four. But my complaints have mostly been about the lack of real support and communication. It sucks that LG and Tmo put us all in this position.
I'm getting the Sensation tomorrow. I got the upgrade price. But I'm only considering it a bridge phone until the bugs get worked out of the G2X. When I thought I only had the option of one phone, I HAD to leave for the Sensation. In my case I initially chose the G2X knowing about and comparing it to the Sensation. Sensy is indeed a great phone, but side by side, we all know the G2X is just.....well, better!
But my cell phone is my primary communication device, I don't have a wired home phone. I've had reception issues and it has been too buggy to use the basic features. Not having a choice I was forced to move to the Sensy.
But being in this position, with both phones, changes the equasion. I get the luxury of waiting for the update. I've now decided to request a fifth one after all.....just because the screen bleed IS definatively worse on this fourth one. But if they refuse, I still feel like the screen bleed is a non issue in everyday use. But it appsolutely screams at me when I turn the phone on....
I truly believe that all the other issues will be fixed with the updates(s).
I've spent the last two days putting the phone back where is was before my reset last weekend. I've had no reboots all week, but my data has been giving me fits. I've missed not playing with it this week, so couldn't resist putting it all back. Supposed to get Sensy tommorrow.....have such mixed feelings. This sucks....got two beautiful phones and so conflicted and angst-ridden. I guess I can think of worse positions to be in LOL.
Happy Fathers day to my fellow fathers. And all you mothers for putting up with us!

There is no doubt in my mind that the G2X is snappier and more responsive than the Sensation within the UI but in my mind there is plenty of other things that go into making a phone better. Yes, I care about speed and power but when the ONLY difference in speed I see is in the UI, it's not a big deal in my opinion. The G2X's display does have better blacks but the Sensation has better colors, sharper text, bigger display and a brighter screen. When both phones are in direct sunlight, it's not even a close race. The Sensation wins hands down.
Applications run just as fast, if not faster on the Sensation. One of the only games I play religiously is HomeRun Battle 3D and it is in fact smoother plus looks a lot better on the Sensation.
When you finally get to use the Sensation you will realize that the only thing the G2X does better is a speedy UI. Everything from the camera to the contacts app is inferior.
In the end, I wish I liked the G2X better since I paid retail price for it and even though mine barely had any bugs, the Sensation is still the all around better phone.

I can't speak to the differences in the screen because I've only used the G2X in everyday situations. I do know that I have no trouble reading my screen in sunlight.
As for the different UI and different camera, etc that you mentioned, I think you're overlooking the fantastic hardware that makes up the G2X. I'm not knocking the Sensation because it may be a better solution for some. But I am very very satisfied with the G2X. Many of the roms that are out now have ironed most of the issues and made this phone extremely reliable. I don't have any issues with mine. And I can flash any camera, homescreen app, etc I want and customize to my hearts content.
My point is its a great piece of hardware that has some buggy software from the factory. Iron out the bugs and this thing flies.

I have had my phone for about a month now, hated it at first but have slowly gotten it to the point of stable and fast.
Running CM7 builds for two weeks now (since the bugs have slowly gotten worked out). No reboots or issues, data is fast, battery life is good and everything is just "snappy".
I have given up on LG support for this phone, I won't be buying another LG phone again. Rushing this product to market and abandoning it shows that they hold the consumer in contempt. Hardware and build quality this phone is amazing, software support is terrible.
If LG was smart they would release their source for the phone and allow the true experts (rom cookers) to have their way with perfecting it, LG's software team isn't worth the paper their over sized paychecks are printed on.

Flashing all the camera apps in the world won't change the actually camera. When I said camera, I meant it as in hardware, not software. If you want to talk software than I can tell you, I think the G2X camera app is better than the Sensations. By the way. My G2X really didn't have any bugs at all except for some minor screen bleed. I thought it was a pretty reliable phone if you ask me. I know I'm keeping mine for a little bit so I have something to hack until HTC unlocks the Sensations bootloader. Lastly, I didn't really have any problems reading my G2X in sunlight either but it doesn't mean something else can't look better.

Ah, yeah. I remember fiddling with my G1, when JesusFreake and Haykuro were the kings. Those were the days..

First off this isn't another comparison to the G2x thread, but more of a Thank God I switched for the sensation thread.
The sensation Is gorgeous. At first it looked funny to me, but then, it started to look and feel like my old N1 (the back anyways). I love the design. The shell that completely cases the screen is awesome. The way their back is half the phone is incredible. Only thing id change is id put speakers on the bottom, I loved that about the G2x.
Speed is awesome. Yes its not as wham bamm boom boom like the g2x fast, but it is consistent in speed and its plenty fast enough considering the amount of recources the phone is using,( I.E. Sense and bloat). Like someone else mentioned also, its almost as if the apps on the sensation load faster, respond faster, etc. That could be due to the extra .2 ghz i guess.
Camera completely destroys the G2x. If camera was your strong point on the g2x, well the sensation has just as good of app for the camera and takes a pic a hell of a lot faster than the g2x. Although I think the G2x FFC is light years ahead of the grainy Sensation FFC. G2x actually took sweet FFC pics.
The Video camera is great. I love how if you get out of focus at any point, just touch the screen and let it refocus. the g2x wouldn't refocus worth a turd.
GPS is also better than the G2x. At first g2x was good, but then it just started taking longer to get locks.. Pissed me off. The sensation so far is a steady 5 seconds.. My tracks was also very nice. SO happy
Battery. Honestly Ive never really seen a difference in any of my phones.lol From the Htc touch, tp1, tp2, n1, vibrant, hd2 etc. They all seem to have the same general heavy use time (constant) but so far IMO its about the same is my G2x, but I was one with great battery on the g2x so that's saying the sensation has it good.
screen is awesome as well. WE all know there are 2 types and honestly I could really care which I get. Its not the selling point to me in the phone. Anyways its nice. The 4.3 really don't feel that big from the way they cut down on surrounding material beyond the screen. They fit it very nice into a little for factor and IMO the design of the back is how they achieved this.
This is my first sense device. Ive never been a fan cause it was to bloated and just wow. Sense 3.0 seems nice. Theres a lot to customize, but things are very organized and laid out nicely. Im still kinda learning the ropes, but all around I think its a darn stinking good UI, YETTTTT is a little hard on the battery.
Damn Damn Damn, Did I say Damn? I wish we had root. I need Screen shots, remove bloat, and download some of those cool apps that I didn't know even took root, until I re downloaded them and it denied me access. lol Who knew root was so important. lol. Although Im getting along without it.
Reception is good. My g2x struggled here and my sensation does much better. So 2 thumbs up for that shiat stew.
General bugs i've noticed are Just a ****ass piece of dust under the screen like 5, but honestly there so small that most people wouldn't (I read the smallest line at doctors that they dont even use on the test, just did if for ****s and giggles) see it and trying to get it replaced would be dumb since they probably wouldn't see it and Ive got all together a flawless device. I also never see them, period. Unless I'm in the sun and got all the other dust off (which is hard cause it instantly comes back, and even then, if you screen has em on em anyways, who cares about a few underneath unless it grows) and searching I cant see em. There is the Wifi bug, but I never experience it. you literally need to block the back, but it wont just do it anytime, its only when signal is weak for me. Almost like they got the DB vs Bars wrong, (if wifi uses even DB). Other than that. I have nothing wrong with mine.
The g2x man. Started out ok. GO to market place while on wifi, and it kicks you off wifi although still shows the wifi bars. Basically it just switched to data until you toggled back. I hated how the browser barely scrolled, to go down a long page you had to finger fuk the **** out of the screen. The camera was not the best for a 8 mp, and the video was pretty choppy. Then theres the screen bleed that at first didn't bug me, then it just was noticeable. My phone was solid though other than those issues, no reboots, until about 5 weeks later. Then it would happen probably every 2 days.
All in all if anyone is on the fence. Don't be. I was, I wanted to think my G2x was the **** and a software update would make it all better, But why wait? That still may not even fix the issue anyways. If your looking for the better phone by far all around? Then the sensation it is. EASY
Its actually nice to have a nice reliable phone. SENSATION FTMFWWWWWWWWWWWW
SORRY FOR MISSPELLINGS, PUNCTUATION, ETC. Im no college grad
I know a couple ass holes over in the G2X forum who won't appreciate this. As you know, I have both devices as well and prefer the Sensation over the G2X. There are a couple guys over in the G2X forum that will defend that thing until it blows up. They don't want to admit something else is better than the phone there stuck with for a couple years.

And as JRwin knows I also have the g2x. I havent been able to do a side by side comparison yet because I traded one of my G2x's for the sensation and the other one LG had for repair. It's on the fed ex truck today. I do notice though that the g2x was a lot faster but to be fair it's running vanilla android and it was overclocked. I kind of do miss my G2x though and am looking forward to getting it back from LG today. The only issue I really had with my G2x was screen bleeding. It was acceptable on one (the one I traded) and really bad on the other that I sent to LG for repair. I think they are both great phones(if you get a g2x that doesnt have tons of issues which seems to be rare)
I really do love both phones. The guy from phone dog I think put it best. The G2x is a Ferrari that looks like an ugly car and the sensation is like a BMW 5 series, really nice looking and also a good performer but not as fast as the Ferrari

Maybe once you go back to the G2x you will realize sensation ftw? or maybe thats just your experience. Either way, great post. I also said to a lot of people before that guy said that, " the g2x is a muscle car with no bells and whistles and the sensation is a luxury car with bells and whistles just not as fast as the muscle car". lol
very true?
Also I think the route you go is great. Send in for repair instead of waist another store device and it will probably have a issue as well. My sensation is issue free other than a couple specs of dust so if I ever get bothered or it gets worse. Im doing that. Sending it in. I want this phone. lol

Ive tried cm7 up to build 55 before dumping that DUMP. CM7 was buggy shiznit. Brightness cant even be changed. lol Gps bad, in landscape screen sensitivity crap, and lets not mention the 20% off battery meter even after it was apparently fixed.
GB on the G2x will not be released for a while, and will bring more bugs.
For real, go in landscape, and try and touch the bottom of the bottom letters. lol they dont respond. Something wack with that phone.
I've been using the Verizon Fascinate (Galaxy S) since launch. When the G2x came out, I got that on launch day to check out T-Mobile and a potentially awesome phone. The G2x was okay, but it didn't feel like a full step up from my Galaxy S series phone. Then it got a little buggy and I didn't have confidence in it. I returned it and cancelled at the end of the 14-day window, because I felt the Sensation may give me the step up I was looking for.
I received my Sensation in the mail yesterday. Honestly, I'm ready to tell them to port my number NOW and cancel Verizon, but it hasn't even been 24 hours yet. I'll be patient and see what issues arise over the next few days as I know some issues take a while to surface (based on what I've read). Even so, the Sensation really is an awesome phone. As already written, I wish the speaker was somewhere else like on the G2x, but that's a design flaw most phones seem to have nowadays for some reason.
I also didn't imagine all the issues LG/T-Mobile are having with the G2x. Things have been real shady since the phone was launched. I'm real glad I jumped off that boat when I had the chance. There doesn't need to be any hate between any phone users - even if they use an iPhone. You have every right to love your device and dislike another. That being said, the Sensation definitely feels like a winner... but it is too soon to tell for sure.

Yeah, I have to agree about CM7. I didnt have too many issues with CM7 but being a CM7 user on other devices I could tell for sure CM7 on the GX2 still had a long way to go. I was actually running Faux's rom the last week or so I had it and it seemed the most stable for my daily use than any other G2X GB rom.

Everyone that defends the G2X always does so with caveats. A phone should just work. Every high-end phone's going to have quirks because of all the crap that's crammed in to them. But at a minimum a phone should:
- Only turn off and on when the user wants it to
- Dial and receive calls consistently
- Bluetooth should allow you to store profiles, connect automatically to paired devices, and provide consistent sound output
- Wi-Fi should accurately find locations, connect to them quickly, remember them, and connect again automatically
- Allow you to switch between 2/3/4G and Wi-Fi without issue
- GPS should work consistently
The O2X/G2X have problems in all the above areas (except for the seven seemingly perfect phones all the apologists own). I don't care if a phone has eight-cores clocked at 3.0ghz if it can't do the above well its speed is useless. The O2X/G2X will be remembered much like the Yugo and original Hyundai Excel when all is said and done.
The O2X was released with the same issues the G2X is suffering. LG's had six months to develop fixes. The same people that broke it are the ones trying to fix it. I hope for all its fans sake LG eventually gets it right but based on their track record I'd bet against in Vegas if I could.
Samsung's been monitoring issues with the SGS2 and has so far rolled out three updates to the ROM and four updates to the camera firmware in six weeks time. I'd guess from history HTC will be just as attentitive. Why would/should it take LG six months of customers begging and being inconvenienced to get a fix out? Their competency has to be questioned.

I'm 24hrs in to my Sensation. I have both yes. I got the Sensation because my son has it. It looked like it was worth the try.
I can't say I'm as impressed with the Sensation as you are. I probably won't keep it. But, that does not mean its not a good phone. It's impressive in its own right. Some things are better than the G2x...other things, not so much. I like Sense. I like the Camera speed, I like the stupid locking ring. I like the snappy performance, after setup. And the thing I liked the best, when going to a web page, I could read it right off...without the resizing required in the G2x.
Locked or unlocked bootloaders hold no important place for me. The Chefs on XDA are great. They do wonders with everything. Unlocked bootloaders are their domain. When the Sensation is unlocked...they will jump to it.
To me the Sensation feels off. I was a Nexus One fan and this does not feel like that. Close...but enough difference.
Right now there are enough good things between both phones to make everyone happy. If people feel they cannot wait for the fixes and updates on the G2x, the Sensation is a great choice. I can't blame them for wanting to have a phone that equals most of the expectations they had when they paid good money.
To each their own. I refuse to belittle anyone for 'jumping ship'. Its only natural to defend your own choice. Its also natural to ridicule those that do not agree with your choice. Both phones are good. It's like arguing which playmate of the month is better....Miss/Mr. January or Miss/Mr. February. For me, Don't worry, you be happy....ok?

This is an excellent post. I expect my phone to work like my Desktop or Laptop computer, turn it on and everything works, with the G2x it has been hit and miss!
WOW.. So I sent in my g2x because this one had really bad screen bleeding. The other 2 I had (one mine, one my daughter's) didnt have it nearly as bad as the one.. anyway.. I got it back today. On the repair form it said cause: scratch, action: replaced case (housing)
umm the phone didnt have a single scratch on it(it was brand new!) so they did a repair that didnt need to be done, and my issue still remains. I call them, he gets the repair facility on the line and they tell him screen bleeding is normal with TFT displays. I tell them I have two others and while they have it and it's acceptable, the one I sent them was very severe and protruded to the middle of the screen, not just the corners. Plus if you hold it on an angle you can see a white light bar across the top(which was not present on the other two) He gave me a supervisor who is now trying to get a supervisor from the repair facility to see if there is anything they can do in this case, but she doesnt think there is anything that can be done.. really LG?? really?? First and last LG smartphone I buy..

I feel exactly the same way. The horrifying thing is that Google's deciding between LG and HTC for production of the Nexus 4G this Fall. I hope folks from Google read XDA. The O2X is selling for 20% less than the SGS2, Sensation, and Atrix in Europe. I wonder why?

All good points. It really doesn't matter if someone does or does not have those issues. If you do, its important to you. Period. Only you can judge just how important it is.
Stop with the caveats....like it or not....move on...or not. Period.

I ask this purely out of curiosity, not to be antagonistic. How do you use your phone that any or all of the above would be acceptable? I'm starting to think there are two different groups of phone users here: 1) phone as a workhorse, and 2) phone as a hobby. I consider myself a part of the first group and my G2X became history (at great expense) when it rebooted itself in the middle of a conference call to Asia. As a hobby, I could see where the idiosyncrasies of the G2X would actually make it fun but as a device to depend on, not so much. To each their own I guess.
Am going to pick up a SK4G in a little bit and was wondering from our community the general conscensus on how you guys feel about it?
I'm coming from a MT4G, which I am extremely happy with, the way I have it set-up. Any one also have both and maybe a comparison? (not the obvious of course like "the screen is smaller", etc., I've been around a bit, I know a tad about a couple things =] )
I've noticed it doesnt have as crazy as a following as some of the other androids, but that doesnt mean theres no good development going on!
Let me know if you dont mind.
I came from the mt3gs and a VM optimus v afterwards. I wanted the mt4g for the specs. But I couldn't do all touch typing. I found keyboards to help. But it's just not the same as a physical qwerty.
I'm the kind of guy who likes to buy phone 2-4x a year. Maybe not the kings of the hill. But mid to high range phones. Of course, it's expensive to do so. I decided to get a phone to last a whole two-year contract. I opted for the s4g. I was due for an upgrade and even waited until launch date for this over a g2 or mt4g.
What won me was obviously the keyboard. You don't see too many 5-rows available. Spec-wise, this phone is just average. Camera dept. is really lacking. Only 3mp. But lack of led flash was the killer. Still, the keyboard was winner. The physical design is nice. I especially liked the sliding mechanism. Half-phone sliders, like the mt3gs, just feel faulty and flimsy. You could pull the halves apart or slide past the closing stop point. Not that an average person would. But I like to conduct stress tests. This mechanism is sturdy. People have dropped plenty times and claim the mechanism is just as sturdy as it was at purchase.
Also, the screen tilt really makes a difference. Using my mt3gs after this makes it really apparent. It makes using a non-tilt screen really hard to adjust back to.
The phone does come with some bugs and issues, which you can read through the forums (I have a thread over at tmo forums and adroid central entitled "bug report and other issues".) However, rooting and getting custom rom Smooth Maximus GingerClone will make the phone a new phone. The speed is fast and lag hardy present. Only minute issues still remain, yet to be resolved.
Overall, especially if you need a physical keyboard, I would suggest this phone. It is highly recommended you get Smooth Maximus for its best value. If all-touch phones didn't bother me I would go for a mt4g, g2, or wait for the mt4gs. But for you, as a backup phone this is an awesome investment. I would wait for the mt4gs, though, just for its specs and future android development.
I would say don't. You will miss the MT4G. I did the same thing Saturday night. I got rid of it last night. The phone has a nice keyboard and stuff... but the performance of the phone lacks! I mean it has a 1ghz processor and all, but its nowhere near fast as a vibrant.
I would say don't. Because you will be disappointed. If you want a keyboard get the G2 or wait for the myTouch 4G Slide.
3 days after I got the SK4G I traded it immediately and got a Nexus S instead. That phone wouldn't send or receive texts and it also wouldn't call or receive calls until I restarted. But that might have been wifi callings issue though. And if you browse the web a lot then this is not your device since the screen is so small. The only thing I liked about the phone was Cloud Text and the phenomenal keyboard. Although, as all Samsung slider keyboards do, it tends to once in a while not register a key when typing.
The quality of the SK also lacks significantly compared to the myTouch....
Just my 2 cents.

Listen , you should do a bit research before posting in this thread imo .
It's a 1GHz of course it lack's performance , the Galaxy & SK4G have the same processor & gut's & once you install a custom kernel & ROM you will be fine , there is no Wifi Calling issue & browsing the web is fine , Cloud Text & the keyboard is amazing .
I don't wanna be bias so I'll give my honest opinion. If you are a power user, don't get this phone. Though it runs a lot more smoothly on a custom root setup, it still has tiny lag, as enoch pointed out it doesn't register all button keyboard presses. The only reason you should get the sk4g is for the keyboard alone. If not then a more powerful phone may satisfy your needs.
If you are a power user, don't get this phone. If you're getting a phone just cause, you can consider this. I love the phone and haven't put it down since. But if this is a main phone for two years on contract, you can get something better.
Lol, I don't mean to contradict my earlier post. I'm not as bias with this one.
i would recommend the sk4g. coming from all-touch smartphones like the nexus one and hd2 running android and the hd7, i am happy with the sidekick 4g. i generally avoided android phones with qwerty keyboards because most are sliders and i hate phones with too much movement.
the droid pro was my dream form factor for an android phone but since i am happy with tmo there was no way i would switch to verizon just for that phone. plus the resolution on the droid pros smaller screen was a turnoff.
the slider on the sidekick 4g is pretty sturdy. the keyboard is awesome. i use my phone a lot for business and the sidekick 4g was the last smartphone on my list. but after comparing to other qwerty androids out there the skg4 seemed to be one of the better.
the camera is only 3m and no led flash. but the quality of the pictures is pretty good for being 3m. depending on what rom i had on my hd2, the sk4g's cam took pics just as good.
the speakerphone is pretty good. better than any htc ive had.(g1, mytouch 3g, hd2, hd7, nexus one).
even though its mostly made of plastic, its pretty durable and not as 'cheap' feeling as some claim it to be. i actually think its one of the more better built phones ive had(besides the hd2).
as for performance, even though it has the same 1GHz hummingbird processor as the galaxy s, tab, etc... it doesnt feel as smooth. most of the lag can be noticed while unlocking, navigating through any custom ui, and switching back to home screen from some apps. but once you are inside of an app it feels just as smooth and snappy as other 1GHz smartphones.
if i were you i'd probably wait until the mytouch 4g slide comes out.. its not too long. im not really digging the mytouch4g/slide's front looks and not liking how the touchscreen is fully exposed on all sides as opposed to the sk4g's screen/slider is protected on two sides.
I know my phones. I know it technically has the same guts as any Galaxy S phone. But I can tell you any Galaxy S phone feels so much more faster than this phone does. I mean I was shocked that the phone didn't perform like a 1ghz device should! I did install Bali with voodoo enabled and that didn't make much difference. While on the vibrant the difference was almost night and day.
And yes I pointed out that Cloud Text and the keyboard are Amazing!
But the phone is just sluggish.
If he is a power user, he needs to look elsewhere because this phone won't suffice your need of power. I mean I found my self restarting the phone every few hours while on my myTouch 4G I never had to restart.
Another thing I should also point out is that battery life isn't the greatest. The phone wasn't lasting me even 8 hours a day (I'm more of a power user). While the myTouch would last me 22+ hours on the Virtuous Unity ROM or 18+ hours on stock. The phone with a keyboard that lasted the longest that I ever owned (android) was the G2 I was getting a solid 36+ hours of use. It was Stunning!!
My suggestion would be wait a few weeks and you can get the myTouch 4G Slide.

I would recommend this phone if you are a hardcore qwerty user like myself. I came from the MT4G and I got this phone through craigslist and I have been satisfied. Is it a high end phone? Maybe if this came out last summer but it does not stop this from being a good phone. Even though the development is not as great as other phones ( I do appreciate the support!) There is not much wrong with this phone. 3 MP is weak for a camera nowadays but it does its job. Is the phone sluggish at times? Sometimes but with the gingerclone rom and bali kernal it has decreased. With more roms in kernals in the future it should change indeed. As for the battery I let the battery die and let it charge completely and no lie got 24+ hours of battery life which consisted of playing Chrono Trigger on my phone (keyboard controller ftw) but as everyone else has been saying if you want value and a 5 row keyboard then sk4g, if you wanna throw some more money and wanna be that suave guy with a fancy phone then please get the mt4gs and tell me how it is ;-)

Not a good trade. I wouldn't do it.
Try to see if you can get a Nexus S instead.

most people who are all hardcore with buying the latest and greatest may disagree. My point of contention is, when your a guy like me who has to keep up with multiple females at any given moment there is no better phone. Simply put, *****es love texting. The only competition we have as far as touch screen texting is the Droid boomerang. I forget the model designation but the thing is ****ing retarded huge. Next up we have the blackberry, but the closed source OS was the major boner killer for me.
With all that said, if you **** *****es, like lots of *****es. There is no better phone. All the other ************s struggle to keep up. I don't know how, but all the females I know get at least 45 WPM out of those ****ing dinosaur Nokia bricks. I can't do that ****, but I do know that with a SK4G I can get 45 WPM+ with nearly 100% accuracy.
