Will get my Charge this week and want to do two things to change it from stock. I want to be able to tether and I want to get rid of all of the pre-installed apps. Other than that, I'm fine without GB and would likely be happy with the stock ROM. What's my best course of action? Alternatively, what are the most stable non GB ROM's that won't force me to sacrifice features? Thanks in advance.

GB will be the officially supported stock ROM as of this week. Look in the Development section and get the EP4D rooted package. That is the update that Verizon is set to push this week, but rooted and lagfixed.
Perfect. Thanks. Curious - What does EP4D stand for?

It really doesn't mean anything per se. Samsung's versioning system uses letters and numbers. The charge was released as ED1, then it went to ED2, then EE4. EP4 is the next release that is scheduled to go out on Tuesday. I'm not sure how exactly they increment the letters, but the number increments one per update (some updates are internal and never go to customers). The fourth character is the minor revision, and it definitely increments by one letter for each minor release, based on the leaks we've been getting.
I almost left AT&T today, until they offered me a early upgrade on all my lines. I was going to go to Sprint and get the ET4G but decided since they made the offer I would stay and get the SR.
Question for everyone here, I see many root methods including some that was used from TMobile's version of this phone. Which roots is the best/easiest for the SR?
Also what do you think is the best rom? With or with out an ICS theme, since I do not think the SR has been updated to a full ICS yet?
Thank you for the information.
you can find all your question answered on this thread created specially for noobs.

I haven't seen or heard about when the OTA ICS updates will resume. Maybe I'm not looking in just the right places, but all of my searches (web & xda) don't have any new information.
Has anybody heard about when the updates will resume? I have the i9020a, but I guess I'm asking more generally.

What makes you think ICS OTA was stopped ?
I went back to GB for a day 3 weeks ago and the notifiaction to update to ICS keeps coming and annoying me ... One of the causes I revert back to ICS was the annoying update notification...
PS:My phone is I9020T BTW
Just haven't received any notification to update, and all the news I could find said it had been paused a few weeks ago but there was nothing new or recent saying that the pause was done with. At least that I could find.
That's because you have i9020T.
Google haven't release ICS update for I9020A yet.

If that's the case, I feel better about the lack of an update. So then it's a waiting game at this point.
Thanks.
i'm on i9023 and even i havent got it.. there hasnt been any news since they stopped the ota.. even am wondering if we'll ever see a official update..
i heard some rumor that Google has stop OTA temporarily due some bug ???
I heard it was because of battery issues. True or not don't know, but im guessing there's probably more to it than that. Been waiting along time for it tho.
Nexus s 4g completely stock. 2-5 fC's a day. Lets get this show on the road.
Well...

I've been continuing to look around online to see what I could find, and I've stumbled across a seemingly useful thread on the Google Mobile Help Forum. I haven't made 8-10 posts on XDA yet, so I cannot provide an outside link here. I'm sure I could PM it to anybody who asks.
To sum up what I've found, it looks like they're still collecting data about the issues that users are having with the ICS update on the Nexus S. A Google employee provided links on where to report specific issues, which would include the battery issue that you had mentioned.
However, it still doesn't quell any concern about when they're going to have those issues corrected, or how much progress they have made so far.
Why wait ?
Don't wait for the OTA, root your phone and install any one of the amazing choice of developer ICS ROM's to your phone
I chose the ICS version by Peter Alfonso http://download.peteralfonso.com/crespo/rom
(in tandem with Eugene's Speedy Kernel) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1401455
and it's brilliant !
Haven't had one FC in three weeks of use and battery life is astounding
Go for it, it's easy to install and if you don't like you can simply revert back to your current ROM (so long as you used ROM Manager and made a backup of course)
Root is the way to go.
ICS is having battery problems. Go with a custom as mentioned above. I went with the [ROM][25-01-12][AOSP][4.0.3] Codename Android 1.2.0|Fully Open Source and its amazing!

Or just compile it yourself. The code is there.

Best ICS ROM
I have been using Crossbones after testing out another well known rom. Crossbones seems to have the magic. The developer is very concerned with stability and only adds features if it works well. No random crashes and few bugs. But he rightly labels his current build a beta which I respect. Others are labeling their betas, stable builds. If you are looking for a good rom with lots of potential check this one out. Oh and BTW great battery life.
Thank you all for your suggestions.
I used to flash ROMs on my Captivate, and kept my Nexus S as a Google OTA phone. Though, considering this whole ICS mess, I'm considering going the way of the custom ROM on this device too.
I might give it another week or two, and see if anything happens by the start of February.

If you have a linux machine compile it yourself, or pick one of many custom ROM's out in the development section or get mine from my signature, the lightest ICS Rom out there. No battery issues for me, lasts 2 days on medium usage.
Hmm i saw that Google stopped the update on some regions including mine -_- to gather feedback ...
Good ICS ROM
Checkout this ROM, it comes with the kernel in that integrated package.

Don't wait for the OTA update, just flash this awesome ROM and chose the KERNEL that fit your needs !!!
Google it's way behind on ICS
my setup at the moment
CODENAME ANDROID 1.2 | Matrix v15 cfs
I have rooted and tried a couple ice roms but found them not much better. It was at the end of November tho, went back to stock hoping for the ota. I do know that there are some awesome builds out but I don't wanna wipe again just yet but I'm getting close.
I keep getting the update notification on my nexus S, I'm trying to figure out if this ICS upgrade that my phone keeps telling me about is the same with bugs etc or a fixed one...anyone know?
Okay, first things first: It looks like we will be able to get OTA's on custom ROM's via an OTA center for ROM builders. Apparently all they have to do is add a few lines to the build.prop section and those of us on custom ROM's (shout out to DW for TWEAK) can get updates like everyone else.
Okay, secondly: I just installed the FP5 OTA for my charge and I have NO IDEA what the hell they mean by "update UI"? It looks EXACTLY the same doodoo brown and orange as previously without any cool ICS look to it. This BETTER take care of the call quality issue or I may just switch phones. If this doesn't fix it there is no hope. Check out the FP5 thread and get your update early if your phone hasn't alerted you yet.
Third: I hear that DW is going to start working on TWEAK 2.3 (appartently a Beta is floating around) towards the end of August (middle of next week according to his post.) THANK YOU dude for keeping us all happy with an awesome ROM on PBJ.

thanks for the info... do you have a source for the first part? not that I doubt you, just like to read more about it.
thanks...

Also, if ROM Manager actually worked we could get OTAs through there.
As it is now, we can get OTAs through Tweaktools.

Let me try to find the source. I came across an article with a link to a page somewhere within XDA. I was surprised to see that they would allow custom developers to allow their downloaded ROM's to be updated over-the-air. It isn't that big a deal since we have ways to get the updates anyway, but I thought it was neat........ if it is true and available.
I'll get back to you on this....................

Here is the Droid Life article about it:
droid-life.com/2012/08/09/ota-update-center-allows-custom-rom-developers-to-push-ota-updates-to-users
Near the bottom of the page you will notice a spot about XDA (Source: XDA), which links to the XDA article. That article gives a bit more detail about it.
I posted the link to the actual OTA Update Center website above. Nothing beats going to the source. The biggest advantage I can see to this is that it should also serve to suppress carrier OTA messages since it essentially replaces that functionality. Tweaked already has an OTA of sorts in TweakTools. One of the Rezound ROM's has been doing it's own OTA's for a while now. I think they're using their own host rather than this one, but the idea is the same. I was running it when the official OTA came out and I never got the notification. Some people on other ROM's did.
From what I can see updating to miui 14 only causes unneeded headaches with little benefit.
has anyone found any benefits or new features?

I updated & see no benefits to it or anything new.
One I found was the ability to create a dual app opening shortcut (ie. 1 icon to open 2 specified apps in split screen mode).
Given the problem with several microsoft apps I would not upgrade.

I'm usually one of the people that always want the latest and greatest... Not in this case.
There is absolutely zero sense in upgrading currently. At least until they decide to actually put the new stuff in... I'm beginning to think that next month might actually be a good time for me to switch to the Honor Magic Vs when it officially lands in the UK with global software and official support.
Are there any new features related to multi-apps?
