OTA's for Custom ROM's - Verizon Droid Charge

Okay, first things first: It looks like we will be able to get OTA's on custom ROM's via an OTA center for ROM builders. Apparently all they have to do is add a few lines to the build.prop section and those of us on custom ROM's (shout out to DW for TWEAK) can get updates like everyone else.
Okay, secondly: I just installed the FP5 OTA for my charge and I have NO IDEA what the hell they mean by "update UI"? It looks EXACTLY the same doodoo brown and orange as previously without any cool ICS look to it. This BETTER take care of the call quality issue or I may just switch phones. If this doesn't fix it there is no hope. Check out the FP5 thread and get your update early if your phone hasn't alerted you yet.
Third: I hear that DW is going to start working on TWEAK 2.3 (appartently a Beta is floating around) towards the end of August (middle of next week according to his post.) THANK YOU dude for keeping us all happy with an awesome ROM on PBJ.

thanks for the info... do you have a source for the first part? not that I doubt you, just like to read more about it.
thanks...

Also, if ROM Manager actually worked we could get OTAs through there.
As it is now, we can get OTAs through Tweaktools.

Let me try to find the source. I came across an article with a link to a page somewhere within XDA. I was surprised to see that they would allow custom developers to allow their downloaded ROM's to be updated over-the-air. It isn't that big a deal since we have ways to get the updates anyway, but I thought it was neat........ if it is true and available.
I'll get back to you on this....................

Here is the Droid Life article about it:
droid-life.com/2012/08/09/ota-update-center-allows-custom-rom-developers-to-push-ota-updates-to-users
Near the bottom of the page you will notice a spot about XDA (Source: XDA), which links to the XDA article. That article gives a bit more detail about it.

I posted the link to the actual OTA Update Center website above. Nothing beats going to the source. The biggest advantage I can see to this is that it should also serve to suppress carrier OTA messages since it essentially replaces that functionality. Tweaked already has an OTA of sorts in TweakTools. One of the Rezound ROM's has been doing it's own OTA's for a while now. I think they're using their own host rather than this one, but the idea is the same. I was running it when the official OTA came out and I never got the notification. Some people on other ROM's did.

Well..I learned a long time ago never to rush things..and getting a new update is factored in with that. I'll wait and see what changes (good or bad) AT&T has added to this before I flash it..If they can make it so our phones are completely locked I am sure they will try..I might root mine before hand and then back up what I have already..and then just play the wait and see game..

Meh I already have it....and I will wait for a developer to mod the "official" release. no way will I load A Samsung/ATT release...They could disable a lot things that keep the device flash able.

+1 to that, screw the bloat-ware updates that will just mess more things up than were fixed. Been running dev roms since day 2 on this phone and I won't ever go back to service provider/manufacturer provided crap again. And Froyo does kick *ss on Eclair.

"official" I get. Since "official" has already been cooked a ton of times, why even mention it in a thread about an official release? And why mention "Meh I already have it"? Guess all those writing classes I took were wasted. I need to not be so darned literal when I read something around here...

I think everyone who has read this understands what he was saying. as in i have 2.2 right now so he can wait till someone mods the official release when its released, not that difficult.
true, i just rooted and working on uploadingthe froyo rom let's see how that goes!
Like I said too..I'll wait and see if anything is disabled or locked down..If it isn't..then I'll load it and run it and benchmark it and wait patiently till this is done for 2.2 and our Captivate..http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=821397..Nothing wrong IMHO with the way mines running right now..and giving it a week or so to see if there are any issues crop up isn't no big deal to me..

I feel the same way. With the differences between the stock and the 2.1 rom's I've used, I can't believe ATT sent this phone out as it was.
Course, the Captivate has been nothing but problems for me since day one. (Lines in the OLED and they refused to take it back, speaker failure, laggy, etc.)
The unofficial roms have helped, (particulaly the 1.2 GHz OC'd one from September, and the EXT4 lagfix.) I'm holding out for the official 2.2's and hoping they will fix things, but I'm very concerned about what all ATT will do with them.
If it fixes my VPN issue (I can't get any 2.x version to work with our Cisco VPN's) I'll probably at least try stock 2.2.
When is the official relese for Captivate? Early 2011?

Cyanogenmod on Mesmerize?

Hey guys, I'm new to this whole android development, and of course I got a phone that has barely anything made for it... I'm wondering if there's a simpler way to get the clockworkmod recovery to work, like if someone can post a file that already has all that done...? And I'm wondering about cyanogenmod as well; it doesn't yet work for the Mesmerize, or any galaxy s yet, right? There were no sable versions on the CN website...
Any push in the right direction would be greatly appreciated!

As far as I know there isn't an easier way, I'll be more than happy to walk you through it if you would like. Shoot me a message with msn, aim, yahoo, or g-talk and I'll jump online.
As soon as the sales die down or someone around here lets go of one, I'm planning on getting another Mesmerize to use as a tester. This will also give me one to send to Koush to get us on the list of devices officially supported by CWM. As far as Cyanogen, that will/should come when 2.2 comes out for us, which is slated for Q1 2011. It shouldn't take much to get things working after that, hopefully.

And, just so I'm ready for it, when the Cyanogen comes out after froyo, I'll have to wait for the OTA update and then can do the cyanogen?
Also, will the OTA update come if I'm running the super clean ROM w/ voodoo, or a fascinated Mesmerize?
And which one of those paths would you suggest: fascinated or super cleaned?
Haha I have so many questions :s

No matter what direction you go, it's preference at this point, you will want to flash back to stock before you try to update to froyo no matter if it's OTA or a computer based upload. I can't say that it would definitely cause problems, but there is a good chance that the update wouldn't recognize that your phone was eligible for it.
Well it works on the Samsung Fascinate, which is the exact same phone as the Mesmerize;
So why wouldn't it work? the only difference is the carrier.
First off, that's not even correct.
Secondly, don't bring back ancient threads unless you're providing something of use to it. Especially don't bring back ancient threads just to turn around and start a new thread about it.

ATT Official Captivate Froyo Released

Supposedly Froyo was released for a few short hours...

there are already many more threads about this than there needs to be. froyo was never officially released.
Sent from a phone, playing a phone, disguised as another phone.
My fail... I can't find the "delete thread" option anywhere.
Its ok. The information seems to be true.
I don't recall seeing this info.
I think an important question to consider is just what exactly does an official AT&T release of Froyo do that the devs here have not accomplished already? Even if the release is official, it's not like it would be a great idea for those with good custom ROMs to step backwards. IMHO, the jump backwards to an official Froyo release laden with bloatware just isn't worth the time and effort.
Better question is why this thread is still alive in the Dev section.

Yup, actual source code from our devices can improve all the custom ROMs in here.
Honestly, I doubt an official Froyo release can beat many of the roms here. So, while it would be an awesome step in the sense that we AT&T Captivate owners finally get our own version of Froyo, it'll still take some work by devs to get that up to par with the custom roms.

Yes. And it was a page that had been up for quite a while that was actually just a cut & paste for the Vibrant instructions.
Engadget dun goofed. They came across the meaningless page and foolishly jumped to the wrong conclusion without checking their facts.
Bad news is that if there ever is an update, it might have to be done with Kies.

I have been lurking this site for a few weeks now, following all the chatter about whether or not AT&T is going to deliver Froyo to the Captivate. I am a Captivate owner and just an hour ago I decided to forget about getting a stock Froyo build. So, I loaded my first ROM... Andromeda 2.2. That ROM is excellent and beats out Eclair 2.1 hands down. I don't think I will be turning back to a stock ROM now.
So long to waiting on AT&T and Samsung to pull their heads out of their arses and deliver product. I have the goods now.
Edit: A huge thank you to XDA and the team of developers working on Andromeda. They have turned out an excellent ROM.

[Q] Noob ?s: New to Rooting, Not new to IT

Hi guys - Great website. I love the amount of information being exchanged here. I am new to the rooting environment, but I am not new to IT. I have an IT career, some entry level programming, SQL scripting, and have modded playstations and xboxes previously so I should be able to follow much of the technical talk.
I just purchased a Samsung Charge and have completed the one click root and have confirmed that I have root on ED1. So my questions are (please link to thread if answered elsewhere):
How do I determine which mod/rom is the best and safest to use? Gummy, Altered beast, etc?
Are any gingerbread based mods out or are they all froyo based for the Charge? What is the newest out and is there a projected release schedule?
How do I get the wireless hot stop working for free once I am rooted? Do I have to install a ROM?
Is the Odin application the best way to update the ROMs?
Is the ROM the OS update and the kernel the BIOS update?
It looks like there is an issue doing backups with Charge Mods, so how do I backup my phone? (it looks like the ability to backup has been removed from some mods)
So I am rooted. What are the next steps I need to follow: 1) Backup (how) 2) install new OS ROM????
Thanks for your time.

Pretty much just by reading their threads and seeing what issues people are having. That being said, the Charge ROMs are all pretty new, so safest is to just find a rooted version of stock, which you seem to have accomplished. The other ROMs are trying to improve on things by doing things such as "debloating" (removing useless stuff added by Verizon), etc., but this can have unintended consequences. For instance, with Altered Beast, you'll see he released fixed versions of stock apps which broke.
Are any gingerbread based mods out or are they all froyo based for the Charge? What is the newest out and is there a projected release schedule?

They're all Froyo for now. I'd guess a Gingerbread version will be out within the next month or so, depending on how many devs are working on it. I think Gummy is slightly newer than Altered Beast, but that could change any second. Actually, the newest at this moment is the OTA (Over The Air) release from Verizon last night, EE4.
How do I get the wireless hot stop working for free once I am rooted? Do I have to install a ROM?

You just need to install an app. Search the market, or search the forums for what others are using. They're getting a little more difficult to find as Verizon has started blocking some of them from their version of the market.

Right now it seems to be. Though once you use that and have CWM (ClockWork Mod) installed, you might be able to update using CWM. Still a little early to tell.

Click to collapse
Pretty close. ROM, as we usually use the term, refers to the Boot ROM, which is the first code run, and essentially the O/S, though some ROMs aren't a complete replacement for all of it. The kernel isn't quite as equivalent, but that's true to the extent that it handles communication between the software and the hardware.
It looks like there is an issue doing backups with Charge Mods, so how do I backup my phone? (it looks like the ability to backup has been removed from some mods)

There's an issue with doing backups through CWM, but you can still use something like Titanium Backup. What do you want to backup? If it's just your software, settings, etc., that should be fine.

I have the ED1 versions rooted with gingerbreak and used root explorer to change the script from ED1 to ED2. Everything is working good and launcher pro is making it look better, but is it safe to load altered beast or other roms using Odin or will it mess it up? I would like to get CWM on it to go straight into bootloader like I did with the Incredible.
The kernel shouldn't be related to a BIOS in a PC, that would be your bootloader. A kernel is part of an Operating system. Windows, Linux, and Mac OS X all have kernels. The kernel, as I understand it, is sort of like the middle man between the software you "see" and the hardware. Drivers are a core part of a kernel, but aren't the only thing in the kernel. A ROM, is the OS, as a kernel is included in any ROM. The ROM will consist of the applications included, be it themed applications or custom built ones, and a kernel.
Keep in mind this is a large generalization of the whole subject, but I think its a good overview.

I wouldn't really expect an official Samsung Gingerbread ROM until next year. They are incredibly slow. However, I wouldn't be surprised to see an unofficial version well before then.

Incredibly slow, yet the DROID Charge just received it's 2nd OTA update in 1 month from release, and the Fascinate just got it's 6th/7th OTA update in the past 8 months as well, and as far as I know, the international SGS has had a similar number of updates come out for it as well. The problem isn't Samsung producing the updates (anymore), it's getting the carriers test them and submit feedback in a timely manner.
Given that the SGS line is getting Gingerbread over the summer from most reports I've read, I'd expect the Charge to get Gingerbread sometime late summer/fall, as well as the rest of the US lineup of SGS phones.

You only have to hold the down volume button for a few seconds, until you get to the yellow downloading screen. Im not sure if that has an effect, but I'd start over. Turn off any antivirus, plug in to your rear USB ports, and try again.

They're doing well on the bugfixes, I'll give them that. But with how long we waited for updates for my wife's Epic, I'm not super keen on Samsung's update schedule. They ranked last on the list of manufacturers updating to newer versions of software. That being said, I'm hoping with this as their Verizon flagship they'll stay on top of it.

[Q] How To Either Un-Root Or Mod Further?

I will do my best to keep this short and also hope it hasn't already been answered for the sanity of the fantastic developers on this site. I know you guys hate repetition.
I've recently gone through a breakup with my now-ex, and we are not on speaking terms because of his inability to maintain sanity in some situations. My problem here is that he enjoyed continuously staying updated with the most recent updates and mods for my Charge. I have no clue how to do any of this modding, and since we are not on speaking terms, I don't know what to do about my laggy, hasn't-been-modded-in-months phone.
Before I ended communication, he spoke of a possible ICS update for my Charge. He told me it was solely open-ended developer stuff, no official update or anything, but that it was surprisingly stable. Even with him not in contact with me at this time, I would still like to see if I could do this 'update' myself. Is it possible for a complete noob like myself to do it? Or should I just leave it alone and find someone entirely more experienced to help me through it? If it's going to brick my phone with the slightest mistake, I'd rather not even try. But, like I said, you guys are the experts.
I would enjoy any kind of assistance, if possible, to install this pseudo-ICS; unless I can wait another however long the official update is for Verizon, un-root back to stock, and have the official ICS.
I guess my basic questions are:
When will the official ICS become available for my Charge through Verizon? I know it's available stock with the Galaxy Nexus (which I want quite badly) already.
Could a complete noob like myself do this with the help of you guys giving me links and step-by-step instructions (if you would be so kind)?
How easy is it to mess up without clear instructions?
I really appreciate any kind of input. MANY thanks for reading!
-Megan

Girls?! On the internet?!
If you're not comfortable with any of this stuff then just go back to stock. There isn't any ICS, and there probably won't be, at least for a long time. best you can do is flash a theme or something.

My vote? Just learn how to mod the phone! It's really not that hard. Here's a post to get you familiar: http://rootzwiki.com/topic/4847-guide-new-users-guide-everything-how-to-root-rom-kernels-radios-cwm/
Don't flash the Froyo or Gingerbread links at the bottom tho, they'd a bit dated. Just check that post out to get familiar with the terms and process. While you're there, download and install ODIN (there's a link in that post).
***Before we move on...do you have Titanium Backup in your app drawer? If not, spend the $7. It's so worth it because you can save the vast majority of your data. It's worth the $7 (you may have it already because the exbf may have bought it/installed it). Get it and Google how to use it--make a full backup of system apps, users apps, and data before doing anything else.**
So, once you've read that post on RootzWiki, have downloaded ODIN, and made a backup with Titanium Backup, come back here and flash THIS file (follow the link in the 2nd paragraph for detailed instructions): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1380430
OK. At this point you will be unrooted and have the latest Verizon updates on your phone. You can... choose to quit... or choose to mod more. Keep in mind, if you've figured out how to flash to stock, you know how to flash mods and can continue to mod.
If I were you, I'd check out TweakStock at this point. Flash the version WITHOUT the customized kernel. Probably your best bet. Themes should be coming out for TweakStock soon, so maybe you'll find something you like.
And yeah, regarding Ice Cream Sandwich... Not happening, at least for awhile. Don't worry about it--only the Galaxy Nexus has it right now anyway.
Thank you! This was very helpful. I'm glad you pointed it out; yes, I do have Titanium. He had the paid version, signed in my phone with his Google account, and DL'd it onto my apps.
But here is another problem I have thought of-- I don't know what kind of ROM or Kernal I have...at all. No clue. Like I said, he was the expert. He always tried to show me how to do stuff, but it always went in one ear and out the other. I'm a girl who needs to be shown something from the beginning, by trial and error, and he would simply show me something 'cool' if he came across it and show me how to install it. Haha. Not saying that was ever a bad thing, I'm extremely interested in learning, but we never really had the time, and I don't want to be alone if I screw up.
go to settings> about phone and look at your firmware version. If it's 2.3.x you're on gingerbread. (you should be, if not your bf was a noob)
If you go to Settings and you see TSM Parts you're on Infinity.
If you see poop brown as a main color theme you're stock rooted.
If you go to your lock screen and it says TweakStock in the upper right hand corner you're on TweakStock.
GummyCharged and Humble are hard to distinguish. But chances are if you're not on any of the above, you're running Humble.
For kernel: if you run a program called Voodoo Control and it says status: ext4 active near the bottom, you're running imoseyon's repacked kernel. Anything else, you're either on stock or imnuts' repack.

that made my morning! LOL
I agree, that made me LOL as well as the 'poop brown' color reference for stock root.
Well, I took a look and it turns out I have 2.3.4. Model number is GummyCharged GBE 2.0. Of course, I have no idea what this means at all. I'm just letting you guys be in the know in case you still feel like helping me. Haha.

Well, the name of the ROM you're running is GummyCharged GBE (Gingerbread Edition) 2.0. It's very outdated now. Have you ran the batch backup for everything in Titanium yet?

I will do my best to keep this short and also hope it hasn't already been answered for the sanity of the fantastic developers on this site. I know you guys hate repetition.
I've recently gone through a breakup with my now-ex, and we are not on speaking terms because of his inability to maintain sanity in some situations. My problem here is that he enjoyed continuously staying updated with the most recent updates and mods for my Charge. Megan... I love you...and I am sorry... I'm not sure if you were hoping i'd find your thread.
But heres the info needed incase.
It's the most recent rootzwiki gummycharged, it's outdated, but it's at least bloatfree. Stock leaked kernel from way back, but it was for sure 2.3. I don't play with ancient software.
When I said upadte, Verizon had finally gotten an Official 2.3, over the leaked, which I urged you to update to for stability, even with bloat, since most roms will now be based off the OTA. When I spoke of ICS, I meant on my phone, and I guess it's hard to exactly explain what open source is, roms, and ota's. But given a Dev and the right sources from Sammy and Google, it can run it. This phone just seems to lack the strong community it did with imnuts, like the fascinate.
Enjoy Inifinty. I'll be a better person someday in the long run, but right now, i've got a lot more to work on with myself rather than phones (which is why my ICS is kinda not a big deal to me as).
GL.

Charge Insufficient Memory On Device
I rooted a Droid Charge for my boss using the altered beast method, and now no matter what I do. When I try to download from the market, it tells me there is insufficient space on the device. When there is plenty of room on the sd card, and internal. Can someone please help me, I've tried a reset, and clearing the cache, and download history in the market. Any help someone could offer would be much appreciated.
