Screen sticks together and fits loose in its backcover - HTC Sensation

I'm having very strange issues with my screen and would like to know if other people are experiencing the same with their Sensation.
When I press with 2 fingers slightly harder then I would normally touch on the screen, it looks like the screen consist of multiple 'layers' which stick together. When releasing my fingers it also sounds like a sticker is being peeled of a surface.
Next to this all I find the actual phone part fitting very loose in its "backcover".
Unfortunately HTC is close today and tomorrow, but as soon as I have been in contact with them I'll post an update.

Pretty sure that's the screen separated from the glass that people are talking about. It's the reason dust can get in there too from what I've read.

Yep, I've got it too. Getting my phone replaced.

The pressure thing or the loose fit?

Both, it seems.

yeah i have the same problem i dont know if i can get replacement cuz i buy my sensation from ebay

The screen issue is just the way its built, it happens on all of the Sensation's.

Yeah that's what I thought too, this phone is made that way. Just like the mytouch 4g screen.

I don't think HTC intended to build the screen with a defect. The same issue happened with the Nexus One with the bottom two corners of the touchscreen layer not sticking properly which resulted in dust getting in between the touchscreen and the amoled display.

What I mean is that it isn't a defect, that is just how its made.

Why would a screen be made to make noises when you press it hard?

No wonder why when I was playing with a Mytouch 4G demo the screen would press down like a resistive touchscreen. The layers in the screen is probably the reason for the dust entering, so expect similar dust issues like the Mytouch 4G.

It doesn't cause any problems and you have to really press hard to notice it, much harder than you ever normally would.
I imagine it has something to do with the contoured glass design, or it's a side effect of the manufacturing process.

As i said before, this sounds like a manufacturing defect similar to the Nexus One. There was a big debacle on the Google N1 forums with the initial batch of the phone due to the dust issues because the screen did not stick properly.
I would expect the similar issues with dust to appear on the Sensation which is really a shame. The N1 is now almost two years old and HTC has not learned on their mistakes yet?!

Well, no dust is under my screen as of yet and I can't see any reason that this would cause a problem. We'll see if more people have it.

I can't imagine HTC using such a bad screen design :S
I would assume off hand it is a defect.

Well the screen isn't designed to ever be pressed that hard. I can only replicate this is the middle of my screen, and I have to press uncomfortably hard for it to do it.

But what about the loose fit of the back cover? You guys feel the same? HTC is going to pickup my phone tomorrow and hopefully they won't ignore my complaints.

yes I have the loose back cover too. Has like a gap when pressed? Trying to get a exchange from Walmart but no more in stock.

I am waiting for mine to come in tomorrow, got it with overnight shipping from T-Mobile, but dickheads sent it out via UPS Ground, so tomorrow I should get it, I have the MT4G right now, and I only have dust in the front camera, nowhere in the screeen and I've been pressing everywhere and the screen seems solid on this one.
Ughhh, I really don't want to get a new phone and go through shipping in and out, if I get dust in the one I'm getting tomororw *knock on wood*

Dust Under Screen

Has anybody had any problems with dust under your screen? it almost looks like a dead pixel, but it is most certainly dust. Its on the right side upper part of the screen. Thinking about exchanging it because its super annoying (although i could just be ocding, lol) If this is a widespread problem though i may not bother, just to get another with even more dust under it,although i have not seen any other threads on it in the desire HD section.
It appears as the original desires had a big problem with LOTS of dust under the screen, specially by the volume rocker. Sounds like a screen sealing problem, which HTC had a really hard time with the EVOs too. The screen actually lifted up on the bottom due to no glue on the bottom part of the screen.
Get an exchange and be done with it.

Add me to the list aswell there were tiny specks I could tolerate and only seen under direct sunlight with screen off but one huge speck that kept annoying me completely, visible in any lighting...Costco agreed with me also and got a new one replaced heck they replaced the entire package even the extra accessories they included..really happy now! thank you Costco.

I have dust under my screen also
I suspect the charger and headphone ports are the culprits.
Bugs me to no end.
This was a problem that plagued my CDMA Hero as well. Sprint Service center saw me once a month or so to get it cleaned, Will AT&T just swap it under warranty? So far I'm dust free.
Finally after three replacement I have a dust free screen. Bought mine at BestBuy mobile. They were pretty cool about it.
I noticed dust in the top corners under my screen today too, but I can't for the life of me see it now - the lighting must need to be perfect.
i have dust under my screen now after about 3 weeks of use. it did NOT when i bought it because im anal and i looked very closley. to be honest, a less anal person might not even notice the 5 tiny specs of dust that i see under the screen.
has anyone swapped due to dust issues and got a unit that does NOT get dust under the screen at all? and im aksing this of the people who are turely anal about. ive handed my phone to 3 different people and asked them if they could see the dust, and they could not, then i gave it to my dad (more retentive than me even) and he spotted each spec of dust.
baiscally, im trying to decide if its worth swapping, then going through rooting and getting my phone just how i want it again, only to get dust int he next phone. if its going to happen to every inspire, then i wont bother.

[Q] Dust under the screen!

Love the phone, but the dust is really annoying me. I have 3 specks which are really noticeable when i'm outside.
I ordered it online to be delivered instore. Has anyone else been able to exchange a phone instore if they ordered online with Vodafone?
Don't think I can be arsed to arrange a return only to have the same problem or worse. I would rather exchange the handset instore so I can check it before I leave.
Sorry to put a downer on things, but it's really bugging me now
That's why I never pre order, i rather buy it from tmobile corporate store so i can check everything.

Wow HTC phones still have this problem? My Nexus One and MT4G eventually got dust under the screen and it annoyed me to no end... like it or not dust will eventually find its way in if there's a gap.
Samsung fuses the screen to the glass so no dust can get in but it makes repairs more costly (since you have to replace both at the same time, but warranty should handle that).
hmm this is not good. Please report more cases of this. I returned my G2X because of this very reason. 2/4 of the units i had, had this issue.

actually from what i know, the desire s and incredible s are also with dust in some of them. so i think maybe u have to accept it though its annoying. eventually the dust will be there.
If I cant get it replaced instore, I will most probably stay with my Orange contract and upgrade to the Samsung GS2 next month. Will work out cheaper too.
I am torn though as the Sensation is a lovely piece of kit.

what happened to HTC's amazing build quality??
Hi folks. Just registered to let you know that I also seem to have dust under the screen of my HTC Sensation.
There seems to be just one speck, but it is very noticeable. On white backgrounds it nearly looks like a black apostrophe or comma. On colours such as the light blue part of the default wallpaper it is a bit less so, but still plain enough to be seen on pretty much any colour, except black or really dark shades, if one looks a bit closer.
Mind you I am a little bit less upset than initially, when I though it was a bunch of dead pixels in the LCD. I only figured that it was trapped dust, when I inspected it holding a very bright LED light close to the location of the speck while the screen was auto-locked/gone to sleep. Then I tried while powered off. I assume that on a phone that's off, dead pixels don't stand out from other pixels under bright light, hence my conclusion that it must be dust.
My phone was bought from Vodafone's (Ireland) online store.
Same problem here.
Same dust problem here .I just noticed it and my phone is beeing used for 3 weeks.
I have just had my Sensation replaced which managed to get dust underneath the screen as it was quite visible and really annoying as I initially thought it was a dead pixel. My new sensation which I recieved this Monday has also already managed to get specks of dust under the screen. Athough these are not as visible I guess it is a common problem and will have to just deal with it !!!
unfortunately I too have dust under my screen.
having been using it for 3 weeks , I don't have the dust problem as yet, but for those who have dust inside the screen, where the dust goes in ? (e.g. from the headphone jack, usb charge port, etc) just wonder if we know where it get in, any precaution we may take.
Just noticed dust under mine. Never got dust in my G2 and i had that thing way longer than Ive hhad this.
I've got the same problem. After about an hour of use I noticed it, although it could have been there when I got it. It's not too noticeable as I've put on a screen protector and that's got a speck or two under it because I suck at putting those on.
The dust has come in from the right hand side about 1cm up, so not near any ports.
Not sure that it bothers me enough to take it back, but if more appears, I may be.
Having the same problem with HTC Sensation 4g - Dust under the screen
I have the HTC Sensation 4G from T-mobile and I am having the same problem. It started with a speck, then it got gradually worse. I have only had the phone about 6 weeks, but it's bugging me to no end.
This is a known manufacturing defect guys. There's a whole nother thread about it in general section. Htc knows about it and if you contact them they will replace it, including sending a prepaid slip with it for the return is the defective unit.
The defect is some sort of crack between the digitizer and the screen on the right side just above the midpoint that let's in lint and dust and junk....

I’m on my third Sensation the current device has been back twice, and I’m still waiting on its return...
Originally returned 25th July – Eventually got it back 9th August. Less than a week later I had to return it for the same dust fault. It’s now been 15 days and there’s little or no news on its return.
By the looks of it they are replacing the digitiser and LCD, as they did in the first instance...
If this is a known problem to HTC they sure as hell are taking me for a ride.

If you had dust under the screen, did you exchange your phone?

Here is my situation:
I purchased my phone from letstalk.com, so if I were to do an exchange, I would be without a phone for about a week and a half (I have to send the phone back first).
I noticed dust particles (about 10 or so) on the right side of the screen today. I'm not sure if they have always been there, or just slowly appeared. I never noticed it until I was in direct sunlight today. They aren't noticeable at all when the screen is on.
I'm also afraid of receiving an Acer screen instead of sharp.
So, for those of you that have dust under the screen, did you exchange for a new phone?
You know I have some dust and don't plan on exchanging mine. I'm sure if I do it will just happen again. At least until the next batch if they correct it. I have a sharp screen and prefer it. I think I will just keep it for a few months then do a insurance claim so I get a new one and not a refurbished one. Yeah there is a deductible but I think it's worth it.

Take the case off your sensation and make sure the screen is on at full brightness. Look at the lower right corner, you can clearly see the backlight for the buttons , I imagine dust gets in there and slowly travels (due to moving the phone around) to the screen portion of the device.
I had mine for about 3 weeks when I noticed the dust under the screen, about half way down the screen on the right side. It wasn't specks, but a streak of dust going from the edge toward the middle. I called T Mobile for a replacement, and the one they sent me was worse than what I had, green tinge to the screen, and the screen was not responsive. I sent back the replacement. I sent mine in to HTC almost 2 weeks ago. They replaced the LCD, and sealed the edges (or wherever the dirt is coming in at). It is supposed to be back in a couple of days. I will post how it looks, and if there are any issues with the repair, when it gets here.

I hope so too. I didn't notice any dust in the one they sent me, but it was a "refurb". It was far worse than what I had, so I sent it back to them. I decided then that I wasn't going to play the exchange game with them anymore, and I liked the phone I had, just not the dirt. I am so hoping that I don't have any more problems with it because if I have to live without it for 2 weeks again, I will not be happy!

Wow.. I was thinking the replacement would solve my problems.. but if the refurb units are sub-par, maybe not. And if the dust is an issue with all sensations it looks like they will all need to be sent in to HTC for sealing. Dust Screen of Death.
I'll update when it arrives.
I think the Sensation just has sealing problems with the screen. Just 2 days ago I was out and it started raining, and my phone was in the pocket face down facing my thigh. By the time I got home and pulled out my phone, water had seeped into the screen and messed it up, but all my liquid damage indicators were white. All my other phones, I never even had to worry about that. My HD2, I got poured on outside by a lot of rain, and my phone was completely fine. Luckily, I'm still getting a replacement.

I have replaced it but with a terrible unresponsiveness that still exists for a short period of time after screen activation. The process is a bit in depth, though.
You need to rip up the phone from the back to the front. torx screws in the back come out, the plastic battery tray comes off, two circuit cards come off, unplugging the ribbon cables. The rest of it is a very gentle prying to get the double sided sticky tape separated from the digitizer and remaining case. you will need fresh tape to lay down so it gets a good seal, and I recommend latex gloves to keep fingerprints out. Dust free environment/do it in a plastic bag as well. Kind of a pain to keep the digitizer and LCD free of debris. I am still trying to figure out what the hell is causing the screen unresponsiveness... maybe a grounding issue.
So I received my new digitizer, and it is broken already - I slid the ribbon between the chassis and LCD the wrong way, and in trying to pull the ribbon back out, it snapped so my Sensation remains in pieces while I get a new digitizer. Also bought a roll of 2mm 3M tape to seal the digitizer back too!
The disassembly isn't complicated, but it is fairly involved with lots of delicate ribbons.
What sort of unresponsiveness are you referring - is it always, or just when it's on charge?
The phone is almost completely unresponsive immediately after reactivating the screen. This could be after it disables the screen via proximity sensor for a phone call, or securing it and trying to use the lockscreen. After swiping my finger across it for several seconds it works perfectly, however. Either seems like a software recognition or a grounding issue, as I'd imagine the finger swiping is slowly building a charge. At least that's my theory so far.

Yeah, I have been reading and some other people have had similar problems. I asked the seller of the digitizer and they said they have not had any problems like this before.
I think I'm going to sell the phone soon, will buy an HTC Desire or Desire HD for a few months until the Sensation XE comes out.
I also want to sell this phone. In its current state I can't see it fetching more than $100 though... Half the purpose of a phone is quick reference, not a 10 second frustrating unlock frenzy.

Yeah, that's a digitizer crack. I wouldn't bother replacing it...
I just replaced my digitizer and I'm getting the exact same behaviour. A phone shop also tried two of their panels and they also exhibits the response issue! However reinstalling the broken original digitizer works!
How can all three panels I've tried be faulty? It must be something else.
I can answer calls but I have to swipe rapidly across the answer key. It sucks and if replacing the original makes it work then its a model number issue. Probably the wrong digitizer for that phone revision.

I repair cell phones for a living and have done the sensation digitizer twice. I now turn them all away.
from what I have been able to deduce, something about the space between the digi and lcd causes the unresponsiveness. try using a little more adesive, maybe a layer on a layer, it may work a little bit better

Thanks, I'll give it a go, I suppose!
Have you determined that it is more space that makes it better?
A bit of Googling suggests that many struggle with the unresponsiveness, but I suspect that there might be two separate causes here. Some report pretty random unresposiveness, and it helps to restart the phone, and apparently fixing a bad ground connection between the phone and the back cover fixes the problem. Then there are many who report that it has happened after replacing the digitiser.
I've just replaced mine, and every time after the LCD is activated, the screen is very unresponsive for 15-20 seconds, and then everything is just fine as long as the LCD remains on. Is this exactly the same behaviour everybody else here has seen after replacing the digitiser? The most irritating bit is that it makes it hard to answer a phone call in time.
I disassembled my phone once more and put it together again making absolutely sure that it was done properly. No change. I haven't glued the digitiser properly yet, though, since I'd like to get confirmed that it's working before I do something which is hard to undo. But I've tried different spacings between the LCD and the digitiser (though this is a bit difficult when the whole thing is partly loose), and I haven't really noticed much difference. I've kept much of the original glue, which isn't very sticky anymore, which means that I probably have a bit of spacing already. Any chance that the responsiveness gets better with as little spacing as possible, has anyone tried that?
Please keep posting reports on both what doesn't help and on what seems to improve the situation.
I wonder if it's like the iPhone 4. Many people complained about the proximity sensor not working anymore once the digitizer was replaced. Either way, I think I'm going to suffer through a couple months of this and buy a new ice cream sandwich phone when they come out. :/

Yeah the HOX can be clicky. It's normal. The phone just sits in the unibody housing.

Thanx I was afraid to keep it and then the screen would end up craking or something
and It takes like two weeks to send and get a replacement back.
Yeah I returned one before I knew it was normal. You can tell if it's a case of the unibody housing being warped because the glass will be noticeably higher than the body of the phone. If you see that, then return it.
Ah the clicky screen makes its triumphant return! I wonder if you got mine that I exchanged for that very reason lol
