Has anybody had any problems with dust under your screen? it almost looks like a dead pixel, but it is most certainly dust. Its on the right side upper part of the screen. Thinking about exchanging it because its super annoying (although i could just be ocding, lol) If this is a widespread problem though i may not bother, just to get another with even more dust under it,although i have not seen any other threads on it in the desire HD section.
It appears as the original desires had a big problem with LOTS of dust under the screen, specially by the volume rocker. Sounds like a screen sealing problem, which HTC had a really hard time with the EVOs too. The screen actually lifted up on the bottom due to no glue on the bottom part of the screen.
Get an exchange and be done with it.

Add me to the list aswell there were tiny specks I could tolerate and only seen under direct sunlight with screen off but one huge speck that kept annoying me completely, visible in any lighting...Costco agreed with me also and got a new one replaced heck they replaced the entire package even the extra accessories they included..really happy now! thank you Costco.

I have dust under my screen also
I suspect the charger and headphone ports are the culprits.
Bugs me to no end.
This was a problem that plagued my CDMA Hero as well. Sprint Service center saw me once a month or so to get it cleaned, Will AT&T just swap it under warranty? So far I'm dust free.
Finally after three replacement I have a dust free screen. Bought mine at BestBuy mobile. They were pretty cool about it.
I noticed dust in the top corners under my screen today too, but I can't for the life of me see it now - the lighting must need to be perfect.
i have dust under my screen now after about 3 weeks of use. it did NOT when i bought it because im anal and i looked very closley. to be honest, a less anal person might not even notice the 5 tiny specs of dust that i see under the screen.
has anyone swapped due to dust issues and got a unit that does NOT get dust under the screen at all? and im aksing this of the people who are turely anal about. ive handed my phone to 3 different people and asked them if they could see the dust, and they could not, then i gave it to my dad (more retentive than me even) and he spotted each spec of dust.
baiscally, im trying to decide if its worth swapping, then going through rooting and getting my phone just how i want it again, only to get dust int he next phone. if its going to happen to every inspire, then i wont bother.

picked up 2 Nexus S on release day, went home happy. Preoccupied with work, so I only powered them up last night.
To my Surprise, both phones have dust under the glass! WTF Samsung? Removed the plastic sheet on the front to make sure, and yes, it's under the glass.
on one phone the dust was smack in the middle, while on the other phone it was a little left of the middle.
Can't be seen on a dark screen, but once you switch to a white background like the web or texting you can see it.
I know I am probably being OCD and anal about this, but heck I paid over $1k for both phones out of contract.
Went back to BestBuy and returned them promply, of course now they are sold out, and I have to wait for the next shipment.
Just wondering if others have similar experiences? BTW, I also had a Galaxy Tab and before returned it, it also had some dust specs under the glass...
I also own an HD2 and G2, seems HTC is better at QC.
Shame, really want this phone but WTF samsung?
Nope you sure its under the glass?

No dust under the screen here.
It seems that this first batch of phones is a rather mixed bag; some have defects and others are fine. It was a good idea to return them, hopefully your replacements will be free of issues.
My first S had a little speck of something. I initially thought it was a dead pixel, but I could see it when the screen was off also so I assumed it was dust. I returned it and checked the next one out before I left the store and it seems to be good.

100% sure, remove the screen protectors on both of them and rubbed the area where it was, thought it was a dead pixel too, but no it was fine on a dark background, but on a white background could see it easily.
sold out at my local bb, but still available online might go that route.
just wanted to see other people's experiences or maybe they didnt notice yet, lol.

this happen when you have 2 layers for the screen. the internal part and the upper part where you touch.
there is an advantage for this. if god forbid you dropped and broke the screen, only the upper part gets replaced. and wouldnt cost you much to do so " and you wont get another screen with dead pixel and being OCD whatever the new screen is good or not. because the actuall inner screen isnt touched.
the bad thing about is what you said. dust can enter in the middle between both layers of the screen.
even if you get a new nexus S without dust under the screen, if you leave it in the open area with sun and wind always hitting it, you will get a dust somehow inside as well. so make sure your phone is in a pocket most of the time.
the only phone i remember right now that had both layers of the screens touched as 1 part is the iphone 2G and the iphone 4 " i am sure there are others but i dont know "
this result to no dust under the screen no matter what " unless the dust came from factory while they were attaching both screens on top of each other and glue them "
but if you break your screen in the iphone 4.... god help you.
Yeah, after about a week and couple of days of usage, I've got my first spec of dust in the top left area of the screen. Really, it's nothing noticeable but I do have some sort of OCD with my phone (god help me if I get a visible scratch on the screen).
I don't think it's really worth taking it back to get it changed as this Nexus S I have currently has no problems whatsoever, I don't even have the pink or yellow screen issue with this one. I think I'm just gonna have to live with that one spec of dust for now...
I think this may be just bad QC. I looked at ifixit taking apart the NS. Basically they said the trickiest part to the disassembly was the screen, and they had to use a heat gun to soften the glue just to separate the 2 screens. So dust entering between those 2 screens would be pretty difficult unless the glue wasn't properly applied from the assembly line.

I don't have dust under my Nexus S screen... but I do have dust under my front facing camera! And its only recently just got there - I remember playing around with it extensively when I first got it 6 months ago and the camera was really clear and sharp.
Now it is all fuzzy and white haze. And I can see all the dust particles on the underside of the glass. Annoying!
Anyone know if there's an easy way to clean it? Or is it a case of back to Samsung?
Love the phone, but the dust is really annoying me. I have 3 specks which are really noticeable when i'm outside.
I ordered it online to be delivered instore. Has anyone else been able to exchange a phone instore if they ordered online with Vodafone?
Don't think I can be arsed to arrange a return only to have the same problem or worse. I would rather exchange the handset instore so I can check it before I leave.
Sorry to put a downer on things, but it's really bugging me now
That's why I never pre order, i rather buy it from tmobile corporate store so i can check everything.

Wow HTC phones still have this problem? My Nexus One and MT4G eventually got dust under the screen and it annoyed me to no end... like it or not dust will eventually find its way in if there's a gap.
Samsung fuses the screen to the glass so no dust can get in but it makes repairs more costly (since you have to replace both at the same time, but warranty should handle that).
hmm this is not good. Please report more cases of this. I returned my G2X because of this very reason. 2/4 of the units i had, had this issue.

actually from what i know, the desire s and incredible s are also with dust in some of them. so i think maybe u have to accept it though its annoying. eventually the dust will be there.
If I cant get it replaced instore, I will most probably stay with my Orange contract and upgrade to the Samsung GS2 next month. Will work out cheaper too.
I am torn though as the Sensation is a lovely piece of kit.

Hi folks. Just registered to let you know that I also seem to have dust under the screen of my HTC Sensation.
There seems to be just one speck, but it is very noticeable. On white backgrounds it nearly looks like a black apostrophe or comma. On colours such as the light blue part of the default wallpaper it is a bit less so, but still plain enough to be seen on pretty much any colour, except black or really dark shades, if one looks a bit closer.
Mind you I am a little bit less upset than initially, when I though it was a bunch of dead pixels in the LCD. I only figured that it was trapped dust, when I inspected it holding a very bright LED light close to the location of the speck while the screen was auto-locked/gone to sleep. Then I tried while powered off. I assume that on a phone that's off, dead pixels don't stand out from other pixels under bright light, hence my conclusion that it must be dust.
My phone was bought from Vodafone's (Ireland) online store.
Same problem here.
Same dust problem here .I just noticed it and my phone is beeing used for 3 weeks.
I have just had my Sensation replaced which managed to get dust underneath the screen as it was quite visible and really annoying as I initially thought it was a dead pixel. My new sensation which I recieved this Monday has also already managed to get specks of dust under the screen. Athough these are not as visible I guess it is a common problem and will have to just deal with it !!!
unfortunately I too have dust under my screen.
having been using it for 3 weeks , I don't have the dust problem as yet, but for those who have dust inside the screen, where the dust goes in ? (e.g. from the headphone jack, usb charge port, etc) just wonder if we know where it get in, any precaution we may take.
Just noticed dust under mine. Never got dust in my G2 and i had that thing way longer than Ive hhad this.
I've got the same problem. After about an hour of use I noticed it, although it could have been there when I got it. It's not too noticeable as I've put on a screen protector and that's got a speck or two under it because I suck at putting those on.
The dust has come in from the right hand side about 1cm up, so not near any ports.
Not sure that it bothers me enough to take it back, but if more appears, I may be.
Having the same problem with HTC Sensation 4g - Dust under the screen
I have the HTC Sensation 4G from T-mobile and I am having the same problem. It started with a speck, then it got gradually worse. I have only had the phone about 6 weeks, but it's bugging me to no end.
This is a known manufacturing defect guys. There's a whole nother thread about it in general section. Htc knows about it and if you contact them they will replace it, including sending a prepaid slip with it for the return is the defective unit.
The defect is some sort of crack between the digitizer and the screen on the right side just above the midpoint that let's in lint and dust and junk....

I’m on my third Sensation the current device has been back twice, and I’m still waiting on its return...
Originally returned 25th July – Eventually got it back 9th August. Less than a week later I had to return it for the same dust fault. It’s now been 15 days and there’s little or no news on its return.
By the looks of it they are replacing the digitiser and LCD, as they did in the first instance...
If this is a known problem to HTC they sure as hell are taking me for a ride.
Here is my situation:
I purchased my phone from letstalk.com, so if I were to do an exchange, I would be without a phone for about a week and a half (I have to send the phone back first).
I noticed dust particles (about 10 or so) on the right side of the screen today. I'm not sure if they have always been there, or just slowly appeared. I never noticed it until I was in direct sunlight today. They aren't noticeable at all when the screen is on.
I'm also afraid of receiving an Acer screen instead of sharp.
So, for those of you that have dust under the screen, did you exchange for a new phone?
You know I have some dust and don't plan on exchanging mine. I'm sure if I do it will just happen again. At least until the next batch if they correct it. I have a sharp screen and prefer it. I think I will just keep it for a few months then do a insurance claim so I get a new one and not a refurbished one. Yeah there is a deductible but I think it's worth it.

Take the case off your sensation and make sure the screen is on at full brightness. Look at the lower right corner, you can clearly see the backlight for the buttons , I imagine dust gets in there and slowly travels (due to moving the phone around) to the screen portion of the device.
I had mine for about 3 weeks when I noticed the dust under the screen, about half way down the screen on the right side. It wasn't specks, but a streak of dust going from the edge toward the middle. I called T Mobile for a replacement, and the one they sent me was worse than what I had, green tinge to the screen, and the screen was not responsive. I sent back the replacement. I sent mine in to HTC almost 2 weeks ago. They replaced the LCD, and sealed the edges (or wherever the dirt is coming in at). It is supposed to be back in a couple of days. I will post how it looks, and if there are any issues with the repair, when it gets here.

I hope so too. I didn't notice any dust in the one they sent me, but it was a "refurb". It was far worse than what I had, so I sent it back to them. I decided then that I wasn't going to play the exchange game with them anymore, and I liked the phone I had, just not the dirt. I am so hoping that I don't have any more problems with it because if I have to live without it for 2 weeks again, I will not be happy!

Wow.. I was thinking the replacement would solve my problems.. but if the refurb units are sub-par, maybe not. And if the dust is an issue with all sensations it looks like they will all need to be sent in to HTC for sealing. Dust Screen of Death.
I'll update when it arrives.
I think the Sensation just has sealing problems with the screen. Just 2 days ago I was out and it started raining, and my phone was in the pocket face down facing my thigh. By the time I got home and pulled out my phone, water had seeped into the screen and messed it up, but all my liquid damage indicators were white. All my other phones, I never even had to worry about that. My HD2, I got poured on outside by a lot of rain, and my phone was completely fine. Luckily, I'm still getting a replacement.

There are replacements on Ebay but none come with instructions. Does anyone know how to take it apart and replace the screen?
Look it up on YouTube. I did it on my first EVO, and I must say, it was quite easy. It might be a little different for your device, but if you have even a little technical expertise, it shouldn't be a problem. WORD OF CAUTION, though. There is adhesive under the digitizer/top screen, so use a heat gun, or hair dryer, to loosen it first. It is like a box shape all the way around under the digitizer/top screen in a thin strip.

I haven't found any teardowns online, but it shouldn't be too hard as long as you have patience and be extremely careful. It looks like once the battery cover is off, there are 4 or 5 screws that you'll need to remove. Once that panel is off you should be halfway there. Just be careful because you're now in the belly of the beast. It would also help to take pictures along the way in case you need to know what goes where when re-assembling the phone.

Anything on this Earth can be shattered by different frequencies and impact. Gorilla Glass doesnt break if its from YOU pushing it in and stuff..Not from drops.

Gorilla glass is scratch resistant and shatterproof; however it's still glass. Same principal as "Water Resistant" phones or items, you can't submerse them, but you can get them wet.

Slipped out of my hand while getting up off a chair, fell about 2 feet, landed flat on the glass side onto some tile. Heard a pop sound on impact. It shattered the bottom corner.
I've owned several HTC phones with gorilla glass and this is the first time something like this has happened. I think the fact it has a aluminum housing has something to do with it. Plastic housings can flex a little on impact. Aluminum doesn't flex as much and since glass can, it caused the screen to shatter since the energy had nowhere to go.
Definitely getting a Casemate or Otterbox (if they release it) once I get the digitizer replaced.
I've been looking all over for a tear down but no luck yet. I might just have to wing it and try doing it myself with one of the kits on Ebay. I really hate having to go in blind.
Can you not get it replaced on insurance? I feel for you buddy!
Cnn.cn does have them, probably more reliable than ebay. great opportunity to makes the first guide!
I would buy from cnn.cn here.
Unfortunately they do not have a video up yet but seen as they sell the part, and if you buy it from them, you may be able to request it from them. Worth a try.
i know it can break. its just supposed to be harder than normal. i just wanted to know if it was from a "normal" situation or something out of the ordinary.
will definitely get an otterbox as well. if they ever come out with one..
2 feet drop on tile is how i broke my iphone 3g :/
I know it's not the same as our phone but the steps should be close enough. Here's a teardown video that engadget re-posted today of the EVO 3D http://www.engadget.com/2011/07/01/htc-evo-3d-torn-down-three-dimensional-magic-revealed-video/
I know this thread might be dead but the cracking of the screen happened to me too. I was wondering if anyone knew of a guide or could give me some tips on how to replace the digitizer since I will be attempting to do it myself.

SMh... broke my digitier/lcd on my One X today!
Was gonna replace my back housing because it was cracked and had scuffs to put a white one on,
but when I was doing the first step I went into the wrong slit and slid my tool in between the LCD/Digitizer!!
Only a few centimeters from the edge, guess it was enough.
Now the screen doesnt turn on AT ALL!! Phone still boots and capacitive buttons light up and vibrate
I'm not sure where to start, I hope I can get it to work still but I dont know what to try now.
Im a noob, but the only thing I can think of is to dissamble the whole phone and then
blow dry it and separate the LCD/Digitizer and put them back together after inspecting.
This happened by sliding a guitar pick in between the LCD/Digitizer.
I only went in a few centimeters from the edge until I realized I was doing something terrible wrong.
I was trying to disassemble my One X.
It still works, I plugged in MHL adapter and it works, could navigate normal, just that the LCD doesnt turn on.

A) $75+ for a new screen and attempt to fix myself?
B) Sell it for as much as I can? $220?
C) Try to get AT&T/HTC to replace it even tho I rooted 2.20?

I did the exact same thing you did! That's why I've got two HOX now. I had to purchase the LCD/digitizer combo. All fixed now. I still have the digitizer screen on my desk. Sucks I know.
Sent from my One X using xda premium
you can try that but doubt it'd fix anything. Plus the LCD and digitizer are seriously bonded together tight so it'd be hard to take it apart fully without breaking the glass. I've replaced my LCD/digitizer twice, and while it's not impossible, it's still very tedious and risky. So if your gonna do it yourself I'd suggest making sure the place you get it is atleast somewhat reputable so you don't get another faulty screen, and don't use super glue to bond the LCD to the housing! (lol that was what I did with my first screen and it destroyed the screen). And be prepared to be left with some more scuffs on your housing. Otherwise sending to HTC shouldn't be a problem, even with root I think it's fine. It's just a screen repair, its not like root could cause really screen damage. Good luck though on whatever you decide.

thanks for the reply, um do you think HTC would fix for free if I play dumb and say one day it just stopped turning on?
I've decided not to try to separate the LCD from the digitizer, way too work.
and an xda member said he'd sell me his lcd+digi for a good price but its a HTC Branded one instead of AT&T, i think it will work the same tho,

I was in denial for a good 10 minutes =( still kinda am... smh
I went a little farther than you and got angry though. Totally destroyed it. Lol! Couple things. Make sure you get the adhesive strips. There is a metal casing that goes around that LCD that likes to pop out if not glued properly. And I got mine from repair universe. Not perfect but pretty cheap. Only issue is captivate button lights don't transfer over, and I had to silicone the edge of the LCD to the digitizer cause it started getting dust between them. Pain to say the least. I taken these apart enough now. I'm comfortable with it.

u bought the LCD+Digitizer and the capacitive buttons still didnt turn on? Hope mine will work.
Also can u point to me which YouTube tut was the most helpful for you?
I wish there was some way to fix the LCD I have now tho, still in good condition aesthetically =(
Yeah it sucks that most newer devices really bond the LCD and digitizer tightly. Once (if) you take it apart you'll realize what we mean. Its possible but very unlikely with original screen. And taking the LCD off the housing is near impossible to do without breaking the LCD in my experience too. So make sure to get LCD+digitizer. And as far as sending it to HTC, I'm sure you could try but once they figure out what you did I'm sure they'll charge you (why wouldn't they? ). There was an amazing YouTube video made by some company (I think it was irepairfast) that I used but after many people complained about their service here on their one x, they removed it. So sorry, just look around for some good ones.

I agree with what xaey said. Depending on the LCD/screen you get the captivate buttons may or may not have the little fiber optics on them. I just went with the cheapest one I could find cause I'm a tight [email protected]%. There are NO good videos that I could find on tear apart and none on putting it back together. Take you time and keep an inventory of what you do. I lost a screw and its still missing inside the repaired phone.

When replacing it, just take them optics out of the original, it has very lightly adhesive but it should come off easily and then put them on the new one if it doesn't haven't them already, it should still be a bit sticky to do so. Another problem is possible light leakage (you'll know what I mean if it happens, basically more light shines through than just on the buttons). This happened to me, which is why I don't keep my capacitive lights on. Worst part is you won't know until you turn it on unless you can connect the screen to circuit without bonding it to the housing yet.

alright I'll try that if it doesnt come with capacitive lights. will attempt to replace it next week. I hope I can do this correctyl!!
Well put xaey. I tried to transfer those over and there was way too much light bleeding from the side and bottom. Plus they were a pain to get in there. I tore that thing apart 4 times. Lol trial and error. So I just put some sealant over the captivate area. Unfortunately that does not disable the lights to them.

Lol yeah I know what you mean. I ended up putting some black electrical tape over where the light bleeding was on mine (just under the capacitive buttons) before putting the screen in... and it didn't help much, it just looked more weird looking at it from different angles haha. So I just keep the lights off.

eww I do not want to see leakage from the bottom!
Hopefully i get lucky and only have to take apart once and be done with it!
I've only taken apart a HTC Dash a few years ago.
Excited to put my hand eye coordination to the test
smh... noticed wifi/data pins came off also so I am SOL!!
