I am puzzled (but happy) - Xoom Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can someone please explain what just happended, thanks!
I bought a new Wifi only, 32G xoom from the US and had it shipped to me here in Sweden. I booted it, configured timezone etc and went into the settings. Naturally it showed version 3.0.1. I also configurred a wifi ap and added my google account in order to install some apps from Market.
After a while I got a popup that the device had an update and needed a reboot. I did so and after a couple of minutes I was back online again. And now the version showed 3.1.
What make me puzzled is how the update was triggered OTA since I dont have any operator here in Sweden that push them via 3G. Does Motorola centrally push updates over Wifi? After all I have read about the difficulty to get the 3.1 upgrade, this was certainly good news, but very unexpected.
Can someone please explain, thanks

Moto does not push the udate, but google does. It is an internet process and not depending on the way you access it. US devices received the update weeks ago.
Non us devices are still waiting as their updates have to come from Moto.
Hdtvpower

US models get the update via wifi as soon as they hit the internet. Doesn't matter where they are. That is why I made sure to import an American version.

That was exactly what I suspected. Now I only need to find a EU language pack so that I can convert the tablet to Swedish. I assume that this will not void the US "branding" of the device (for future updates). Is that true?

As it's a US Xoom you should be able to use the language pack from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1083612

Yes I found that thread, but the given method require SD card support. My device does not recognize the 8GB card that I inserted. Arrgggghhhh.

Ah, yeah you'd need to root in order to use that pack. Don't know of any other way though, sorry.

I have the US wifi modell, I live in Norway, and has got at least norwegian keyboard layout... But You might want the whole UI to be swedish?

Yup, that was the intention. I now understand that I need to root, install cwm and then flash the langpack from recovery. But that's not all. The current kernel does not support external sd cards, so first I need to flash a kernel with sd support. A whole lot of work for getting Swedish menus. I think that I will simply wait and see.

Honestly its not that time consuming to unlock and root. I bought my xoom a few weeks ago, and about a half hour after I took it out of the box it was running brd's Tiamat kernel and good to go. Just be sure to read everything about unlocking/rooting before you do. It's actually one of the easiest devices I've ever rooted.

Do you think that you can hand-hold me through the process? If so, I do have a US Wifi only device that has been automagically updated to 3.1 (by Google I guess).
I would like to end up with a 3.1, a Swedish interface and a working SD card slot. I dont really care about root on this one, unless its needed through the process. And I also want to have a device that can continue to recieve updates OTA (if possible). Is this to ask for too much ?
So if you feel inclinded, can you help with a step by step guide? I am not a novice, but the Xoom is new to me. I have been playing with many different roms on my SGS for almost a year, so the concepts of rooting and CWM is far from new to me.

Rooting Telus' Milestone

Has anyone had any luck with rooting this phone yet? I've scoured the net and so far the only rooting instructions I've found are for the European and South American variants of the Milestone.
Running custom roms isn't a big deal for me; at least not unless or until someone manages to port CyanogenMod to the Milestone But it sure would be nice to be able to run Market Enabler so that I can access paid apps without having to buy an unlock code and a U.S. sim. It would also be nice to be able to run MetaMorph too.
Anyway, I thought I'd get a thread started here so that people could post attempts and/or suggestions.

I really hope they can root our milestone, I'm already having a huge problem with app space, I installed a few 3d games and i'm out of space... pathetic.
Otherwise I love the phone, even getting used to the keyboard. nice upgrade from the dream.

Yeah, I'm not 100% sold on the keyboard compared to the dream yet. But the screen is so nice even the virtual keyboard works nice. I've still got 45MB free on the phone but it would be nice to have a little more room just in case.
I wish someone would root it. The one thing that's making me hold out from buying one is the fact that you can't buy paid apps in Canada. I'm actually considering *shudder* the iPhone...
i have European milestone with root but i dont think its easy to do apps2sd with root alone as the native kernel doesnt support ext3 partition and we cant change the kernel.
how idiotic Motorola is to lock down the android handsets except Droid. i am feeling alienated having used to custom ROMs. such an idiotic company with stupid rules.
This does not work for you?

P.S. I get Milestone tommorow But already made sure i can root it lol.
P.P.S. Sry Didint know Telus has different ROM, gues rly no root for you...
I would really like to do this too. I had the luck to get a pre released telus milestone. I have been trying to root it for the las month with no success. Apparently it all depends what build # you have. My build is: SHOLS_U2_03.04.0

Actually, looking at the simplicity of the patch (it just installs su and superuser.apk), I have a feeling that what's hanging us up is the signing of the .zip itself.
Unfortunately, I have no idea how to remedy the problem. If only we could get some help from the folks who managed to root the european Milestones...

i dont know much about getting into things like this so i can only hope someone else comes up with something. i dont care about paid apps or anything cause i dont have a CC anyways. i just want my root so i can O/C and change the stupid white bar in the top. my top 2 reasons for root.
theres gotta be a way around it...
oh ya and i found a bug with the milestone
if you have launcher2 installed and try and use the mototorch widget it just reboots your phone.
so im back with original laucher :\
looks like we are getting 2.1 upgrade in Q2 2010, not sure what months are Q2 though...

perhaps there will be something changed so we can root after 2.1, would be nice!

i rooted a UK milestone a few weeks ago. the trick to root it was a modified update zip - that was changed in a very special way. it was built form two zip files attached. the first was the original update that was signed by the correct keys and the other was a "superuser.apk + su" update. keep looking for a hack like that and i hope you can find one soon.

I think that's the big problem. There have been no updates issued for the Telus Milestone since it was released with 2.0.1. We'll have to wait for the 2.1 update unless someone figures out another way around the signature lockout.

has anyone heard anything about any progress on rooting this thing??
One of the thing holding me from experimenting more is the lack of a Telus SBF.
It could be possible to root by flashing a LATAM sbf and then rooting it. Latin America Rom uses the 850 frequency for 3G as well so we should retain the band.
One thing I saw in this thread is that there's two build version of this phone: SHOLS_U2_03.06.0 and SHOLS_U2_03.04.0, I wonder what's the difference.
Maybe it would be worth the try to contact TELUS and try to get a 3.04 "upgraded" to 3.06 then we might get our hand on a TELUS sbf which would be very usefull for many people with Milestone in North America and would be a nice safety to start playing with our phone.
That's just a thought, not very optimistic!

3.2 & Apps Help/Suggestions

Alright, I bought my Motorola Xoom from Futurshop here in Ottawa (Canada) quite awhile ago. Still running the original 3.0.1 firmware. A couple months ago I believe many sites said they were pushing out the new updates to us, including SDCard support.
Nothing came to me, oh and now there is 3.2 that got pushed out. Still nothing. Quite a stupid company.
Anyways, I am tired of hating my XOOM.
Looking for the quickest and easiest tutorial on how to get my Canadian 3.0.1 XOOM up to 3.2.
Also, wondering if there is a list of Honeycomb apps, best things we can do with honeycomb/rooting/modding yet....anything else I should know.
Thanks. And yes I searched the forums. Not always easy to find exactly what you are looking for.
What Xooms do you Canadians get?? On the box it says " Xoom (MZ6**)"
Mine for example is a MZ601...
I wonder as it could be a Generic Northern US version, or a EURO....and the Model number also helps us identify whether it is a WiFi only or 3G/UMTS...
Oh right sorry forgot about that.
It's the WiFi only version, MZ604
Well I do KNOW that you can use the ROM from THIS THREAD but you will need to root first and the MZ604 WiFi Only does have a canadian specific version BUT I am unsure as to how you would root.
From memory, the WiFi only Xooms are ALL Identical in terms of Hardware, it is just those Xooms with 3G/UMTS capabilities that have hardware differences. I am going to go out on a limb and say you can follow ANY of the WiFi only guides....BUT BEFORE YOU DO...someone else may have to confirm that for me
Still have not found a good tutorial for 3.0.1 to 3.1.
Everything seems to be 3.1 to 3.2 or something else.
Help. Thanks.

I think only the US WiFi and 3G/4G versions have the 3.2 update. Just a guess.
My Xoom (i think the build/model number is HTJ85B? I am not really sure cause i can't find any info to where to look... but anywho) I had bought my Xoom Wi-fi only tablet from Amazon.com and updated it to 3.2. I rooted it using this tutorial -- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1170760 -- And I got Super User without flashing new ROMs and kernels. It took me a few days (due to insomnia not allowing me to read the directions correctly so I became easily frustrated) but after i figured out the wrong line of code (Went into adb shell and then did adb devices, not the other way around was my mistake) everything was straight forward. Follow every line to a T and you should be able to get root and flash it in theory...
To ask, have you tried to go to "About Tablet" and clicking "System Updates"? I had to do it the first time to get my update pushed through on Wi-FI to 3.2.
~~Also to add since I forgot to... ~~
Apps I use are

Yes, I have a Canadian MZ604 and you can follow the wifi guides, they root the same
Unlock, root and push CWM 3.2
With that you can install hammerhead rom and tachi kernel

[Q] Import locked MT4GS (?)

Hi there friends!
I'm live in Germany and the MT4GS is my favorite Android phone to date (have a HTC Dream right now ) and found a very good ebay deal, however I will purchase a locked device. (The MT4GS is not available for purchase in Germany)
So what exactly is the worst thing to happen when I receive it in Germany? Will it just say "enter code, because your not in the statez!" and do nothing? Or will everything work, it just won't accept my SIM-Card or not connect to the network?
I'm going to then get root and s-off if I need and try the kindly posted methods by you great guys for unlocking a rooted device. Feedback if someone successfully did it would be great, but of course I can have a look at the threads too.
Is there any other thing I might run into? Did I overlook something? It'll probably be difficult to return it if things don't work out.
Thanks so much for feedback and help!
Unrelashade
if you actually put a sim card in and start it up, it'll ask for an unlock code and you won't be able to do anything else (except make an emergency call of course). if you boot it with no sim card it'll work fine with no cell connection.
you can root it and do the trick to get the unlock code, all without inserting a SIM, then shut it down, insert a SIM card, and enter the unlock code to unlock it. I did that, it worked fine. Had to mess about a little bit with shuttling apk's onto an SD card to get the necessary tools to do the rooting installed, but it wasn't too tricky. Took me an hour or so. I wouldn't expect you'll have too much trouble.
What Adam said.
Just get S-OFF and use one of the SIM unlocking methods provided on the forum.
Expect to pay high taxes though...
Thank you guys! So happy you are here for us )
Yeah I know, taxes. But it's still freakin' cheap for a new dualcore phone. With qwerty. yay. Thanks for the warning!
Which method did you use to unlock?
Will come back here if any problems will occur.

The one that's linked from the sticky. I advise installing the 'bad' CWM though, contrary to what the guide says, because the manual flash method is a bit of a pain, and now ROM Manager supports our phone, it's trivial to update to a fixed CWM via rom manager after rooting.
Ok, thank you again!
I just noticed, some websites say the MT4GS comes with Android 2.3 preinstalled. If they already put the new firmware on it before shipping then I'll have no chance of rooting and s-off'ing as of now, right? It's probably a mistake because it's upgradable... but still wanted to ask you guys.
shadow, do you know what taxes exactly? Will I have to pay "Mehrwertsteuer"/ sales tax/ added value tax as well as "Zoll"/ tarif tax? And how much % for the latter?
Reply would be most helpful

correct, atleast until a new exploit is found or htc fixes its bootloader unlocking procedure
Yeah, if you get one with new firmware you're SOL. Maybe buy an actual second hnad one and check with the seller they didn't do the OTA update.

[Q] Why is my XOOM (WiFi US) not getting any updates?

People, I just got a refurbished XOOM a few days back. This is the WiFi only US model. I checked the status, and it says its still on 3.2. I see that there should be atleast 2 OTA updates for this - one to 3.2.1 and one to 4.0.3. But when I check for system updates, I keep getting this "You system is up to date!" message. I connected it to WiFi and let it sit for a couple of days now, and still no updates. Am I doing something wrong? Anyone is this same situation? A search did not turn up anything on the forums nor on google.
Any help would be much appreciated.
I would prefer not to root it for atleast the first 90 days while it is still in warranty.
Current system info:
Model Number : MZ604
Android Version : 3.2
Firmware : GAS_EMEA_USAHUBLWFRTDACH_P009
Build number: H.6.6-23
Thanks
Mine is the same. 1saleaday.com? Did you have a strange plug adapter you had to use? I dont think we got the US version.

I got the micro USB cable with it. I think you might have gotten the OTG cable (Micro USB Host Cable) instead.
I thought I was getting the US version!. When I powered it on for the first time, the language was in German. I just assumed that the language got changed by accident.

Thanks! I'll give it a shot.
For anyone wondering, 6.6.23 build is for Retail Germany. The progression of updates is as follows:
6.2.351 (3.0.1) > 6.4.20.1 (3.1) > 6.6.23 (3.2)
So, if you do need to go back to the original stock, it would be 6.2.351
This is great news. I am also having an issue with my xoom not charging, it says charging and then says to connect to charger and it's discharging while i use it plugged in. Is this normal?

I have the normal usb cable, it's the power adapter that's odd. It's the same plug as something like a heave duty air conditioner or something 220watt, and it has an adapter to make it plug into a normal outlet.
I also got the 1saleaday xoom and had the same h 2.6.6-23 build
I followed the instructions posted in the thread about about how to GED-ify your xoom and it will revert back to US 3.2 then it will see an update and keep updating you (i had like 5 total) all the way up to iml77 build aka ICS

Also for anyone reading this if you reside in the orange county, ca. area and know anyone who is HONEST and REPUTABLE who can to do this for me for free or small fee please let me know. Thank You

I think you might be better off sticking to Honeycomb for now, until Google and Motorola start pushing ICS officially to other versions. Even though the instructions seem simple, things can go wrong, especially if you have never done this before. This is just a word of caution.
If you really want to do this, I would suggest reading up on setting up adb access on your pc first. This would include - installing the proper motorola drivers, getting your pc to recognize your xoom when you connect it, and getting adb to see your device. Since this does not make any changes to your xoom, you should be ok if something doesn't work as intended.
Once you have this first part setup, then you can venture on to the next parts. The most critical thing is to find instructions that are specific to your device and version, and to stop doing what you are doing if the result of a step doesn't exactly match with the instructions.
I'm sure someone can walk you through the complete process, but if you are not comfortable doing it, you'd be better off letting someone else do it for you, rather than follow instructions over phone or watching a video.
Let me know if you have any other questions.
i would like to do this to my xoom from 1daysale also but the links directions are confusing me a bit? do you have to unzip the 4 files from the u.s pack b4 you put it into the tools folder? i wish there was a video
I order the same thing from 1daysale also... I have the same build and everything.. Do I have to download the Germany build and then go back to stock? then flash again to US?
can i used this to flash back to Germany stock?
I am not sure if we will be able to switch back but to be honest I don't see any point, at least this way you can get updates straight from Google as it will now be classes as a Google Experience Device. Also everything works exactly the same and even Android market shows up in £'s. The only thing is it will be in US language and the keyboard will be a US one and not UK. If you use Swift Key X tablet it wont matter as you can download the English language anyway.
Unfortunately it will wipe everything when you unlock the bootloader. I have only had my Xoom for a month so I didn't mind loosing my game saves (gives me a reason to play again) so backup any documents, photos, music and films to your PC before you start.
You can get Xoot here: [TOOL] XOOT 1.1: Root your XOOM and more! - xda-developers just download the ZIP file at the bottom of the first post.
Unzip Xoot to the main directory of your PC (usually C drive)
I also downloaded and installed the xoom USB drivers from the Moto dev website. I am not 100% sure if these are needed but on my first try my computer had trouble picking up my xoom, but after I installed these it seemed to work (please note I restarted my PC after the install). I downloaded the ones for Windows 7 64bit but just download what ever one is relevant for your computer MOTODEV > Documentation & Tools > USB Drivers
The US stock rom image came from the Moto Dev website but you will have to register before you can download anything. Its a simple registration and wont take you long.
On the Moto Dev page you need go about half way down the page and look for the section MZ604 - XOOM WITH WIFI. At the bottom of that section you will see Build HWI69 for US Retail, which is what you need to download: MOTODEV > Products > Device Software
Once you have downloaded this extract the contents straight into the main Xoot folder on your PC and overwrite any files that may already be there.
Now connect your xoom with USB, make sure USB debugging is selected on your xoom (this should happen automatically but check in settings just in case)
Open up the Xoot folder and click on the Xoot batch file icon (looks like little gears)
A black command box will open up, press S to go into the bootloader settings and type unlock and hit return.
Follow the commands on the command box and then the same on your xoom and it will unlock the bootloader.
Once that has completed close Xoot on your PC and restart your Xoom (you may have to go through the set up screens on your xoom to get back to the home screen) again make sure USB debugging is selected on your xoom
Again open Xoot batch file icon but this time press D which will take you to the Other Tweaks menu.
Press S and you will be given another set of menus
now type ged and hit return and again follow any instructions on screen or on your xoom(this converts your xoom into a google experience device and uses the US image downloaded from moto dev)
After that has finished your Xoom will start up and after going through the first time set up screens you will have Android 3.0 US. You should then get instant notifications that updates are available (I think I had 3 or 4 in total) install them and eventually you will have ICS!!
It sounds like a lot at first but its straight forward really. On my first attempt I was crapping myself because I had not done it before but afterwards I realized how easy it really was, and now I am chuffed to bits playing with ICS
Also note this does not root your xoom, only unlocks the bootloader and converts it to a GED. There is an option to root but I have not played with that yet
Good luck and if you have any problems just let me know. I will try my best to help
Awesome, that sounds super easy and basic I think im going to give this a shot later on today hopefully I zip threw. Thanks!
OH MAN! I did it i cant believe how easy it was im in the middle of my updates now to ics now! Thanks alot man!

Beginner rooting and ROM-ing

ok - I have a new Samsung tab2... P3100 - sadly, it is from China and I cannot seem to access anything I want, despite vpn and us simcard - I am sure there are a million ways around this if I spoke or read Mandarin... I don't. I'm guessing I need to Root and ROM, so am about to take the plunge ... I have today and tomorrow to mess around.
Fingers crossed.
Is this a bad idea?
Cheers

And the update ... I don;t know why, but the wholeROM won't go over to the SDcars via the usb ... I am bluetoothing it over ... I am such a noob, right? But over usb using the PTP (MTP won't discover the device) it cuts out just before the full file gets through. I have not long to go till the complete download ... then I should be able to internally just switch it over, surely? sigh. Wish there was someone out there to help.
Make sure the tab2 is Samsung genuine not a copy
Read as much as possible before doing anything not to hard brick it (nearly unrecoverable)
If the language is chinese try to flash via odin 1.85 for windows a stock firmware which carry your mother language found in www.samfirmware.com
If you are rooted you could try cm10 for 3100 (not any other) from www.teamhacksung.org , i use it now marvellous
Regarding copy to sd card try to use microsd adapter and sd card reader to copy firmwares and files to device
install kies for drivers and connection to pc and odin found in main samsung site
Sent from Galaxy S2 or Galaxy Tab2
Thanks
Yee haw. I really didn't know what I was doing, except I knew it was a genuine product. Woot!
Ok, So I had to stop trying to get JB on it, but I managed to get the ROM? (maybe that's what it is called?) changed to an Indian on that I guess doesn't have the same internet restrictions. I now have 4.04 . Maybe I had that before, maybe not. But I can now definitely use google play with and without the VPN. Downloaded heaps of apps that I'd had on my HTC and am pretty happy overall. Have Feat vpn, Swype, and dolphin that make my Android life awesome.
My one sadness (I'm pretty tough to please) is that there is this app called Skritter that I've been using on my wife's iPad... Although the app says android BETA as well - no - it doesn't even come close to existence past Android 2.something. Skritter have given up on Android. And that saddens me, as it was the only app I had come across that really benefited my character learning I had hoped to use the 3G for this purpose almost exclusively. Sigh.
Mohamed, Bless you for responding.
For all those out there like me, who are not trained in Computer programming, there is a light (even with a Mac on boootcamp like me - I wonder if that was behind the usb driver problem). Yes, it cost me a whole day, but that was just part of the fun. So glad I didn't brick the thing too.
Actually, the process was lightning quick, except for the bluetoothing and downloading of the Large INdian ROM(?) And the inability to actuate the process due to glitches with USB and file transfers.
Also ODIN - nobody told me I needed to put in the PIT (?) file that came with something I downloaded. I stuck it in above the PDA section on ODIN and it worked... Was I supposed to I wonder??? At least the ODIN was merciful and I am ....
Absolutely amazed I managed it..
my P3100 is made in Vietnam
first you need to root your device: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1788625

So it doesn't need the PIT file popped in?
Cause it didn't work - then I popped pit file in and - bang hey presto - it worked. What is the PIT file for then?
Cheers.
