Rooting Telus' Milestone - Android Software/Hacking General [Developers Only]

Has anyone had any luck with rooting this phone yet? I've scoured the net and so far the only rooting instructions I've found are for the European and South American variants of the Milestone.
Running custom roms isn't a big deal for me; at least not unless or until someone manages to port CyanogenMod to the Milestone But it sure would be nice to be able to run Market Enabler so that I can access paid apps without having to buy an unlock code and a U.S. sim. It would also be nice to be able to run MetaMorph too.
Anyway, I thought I'd get a thread started here so that people could post attempts and/or suggestions.

I really hope they can root our milestone, I'm already having a huge problem with app space, I installed a few 3d games and i'm out of space... pathetic.
Otherwise I love the phone, even getting used to the keyboard. nice upgrade from the dream.

Yeah, I'm not 100% sold on the keyboard compared to the dream yet. But the screen is so nice even the virtual keyboard works nice. I've still got 45MB free on the phone but it would be nice to have a little more room just in case.

I wish someone would root it. The one thing that's making me hold out from buying one is the fact that you can't buy paid apps in Canada. I'm actually considering *shudder* the iPhone...

i have European milestone with root but i dont think its easy to do apps2sd with root alone as the native kernel doesnt support ext3 partition and we cant change the kernel.
how idiotic Motorola is to lock down the android handsets except Droid. i am feeling alienated having used to custom ROMs. such an idiotic company with stupid rules.

This does not work for you?

As for the software you want, there is http://droidappz.org/forum.php
P.S. I get Milestone tommorow But already made sure i can root it lol.
P.P.S. Sry Didint know Telus has different ROM, gues rly no root for you...

I would really like to do this too. I had the luck to get a pre released telus milestone. I have been trying to root it for the las month with no success. Apparently it all depends what build # you have. My build is: SHOLS_U2_03.04.0

Slight difference from release ver, I've got SHOLS_U2_03.06.0

Damn so what does this mean? Are we screwed? We need a smartphone guru to get a telus milestone so he roots it?

I think that's pretty much it, except I can't afford to send Haykuro a Milestone just to get it rooted

Actually, looking at the simplicity of the patch (it just installs su and superuser.apk), I have a feeling that what's hanging us up is the signing of the .zip itself.
Unfortunately, I have no idea how to remedy the problem. If only we could get some help from the folks who managed to root the european Milestones...

charrion we will prob have more luck here then HF, no one seems to be doing anything to help there.
i dont know much about getting into things like this so i can only hope someone else comes up with something. i dont care about paid apps or anything cause i dont have a CC anyways. i just want my root so i can O/C and change the stupid white bar in the top. my top 2 reasons for root.
theres gotta be a way around it...
oh ya and i found a bug with the milestone
if you have launcher2 installed and try and use the mototorch widget it just reboots your phone.
so im back with original laucher :\

looks like we are getting 2.1 upgrade in Q2 2010, not sure what months are Q2 though...

perhaps there will be something changed so we can root after 2.1, would be nice!

i rooted a UK milestone a few weeks ago. the trick to root it was a modified update zip - that was changed in a very special way. it was built form two zip files attached. the first was the original update that was signed by the correct keys and the other was a "superuser.apk + su" update. keep looking for a hack like that and i hope you can find one soon.

I think that's the big problem. There have been no updates issued for the Telus Milestone since it was released with 2.0.1. We'll have to wait for the 2.1 update unless someone figures out another way around the signature lockout.

has anyone heard anything about any progress on rooting this thing??

One of the thing holding me from experimenting more is the lack of a Telus SBF.
It could be possible to root by flashing a LATAM sbf and then rooting it. Latin America Rom uses the 850 frequency for 3G as well so we should retain the band.
One thing I saw in this thread is that there's two build version of this phone: SHOLS_U2_03.06.0 and SHOLS_U2_03.04.0, I wonder what's the difference.
Maybe it would be worth the try to contact TELUS and try to get a 3.04 "upgraded" to 3.06 then we might get our hand on a TELUS sbf which would be very usefull for many people with Milestone in North America and would be a nice safety to start playing with our phone.
That's just a thought, not very optimistic!

I used to use a mytouch 3G, but have sold it an am unrooting it before I ship. I flashed the original SAPPIMG.nbh, and now it's showing android version 1.5, and says that the system is currently up to date. Is there an easy way to manually update it to 1.6 so this guy gets the most recent version?
I'd imagine if I can find the original Tmo 1.6 I could update it, but I've spent an hour searching and haven't found it. Any advice? I'd like to ship this thing out today, if I can.

I did, and that brings me to 1.5, however it says the phone is up to date.

This really seems like one of those scenarios where the company will just keep pooping out new phones rather than upgrading the one that exists.
I'm in the same boat. Want to get my mt3g 100% stock and current. Gave it to the wife and do not want to be on the hook for tech support; so back to stock it goes of I can find the right way to do it.

you need to head over to modmymoto.com The emara is the one you need i think. the latam is for latin america afaik. the RAMDLD exploit may be present in your italian build. if this is the case Shrilax_CZ can make you a testflash of your fw.
Just a quick thought on this link that keeps popping up everywhere... After reading through most (if not all) of what was posted at the janky site, I'm figuring that what Infrared was able to do was ONLY because he appears to have the certs for signing packages and whatnot for Android development because of his job. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong, but what he's been able to accomplish, the average joe wouldn't be able to, right?
Trying to clear up my confusion on this matter. The rest of us are S-O-L at the moment, unless of course we were able to sign our packages, etc.

I just want to install 2.1 when & how I want to not when Motorola finally decides to release the update. I would also like to be able to install a vanilla Android 2.1 without Motosuck. Or even (gasp!) An Android with Sense.
So I'm a bit confused.
Is this just stripping the ATT files, giving root access? Or is this a complete AOSP ROM?
I'm trying to root my friends' backflip (US ATT) and I don't think he cares about 2.1... I mean 1.6 would be fine. Just looking for an AOSP like ROM.
So has this phone been rooted. I'm gonna either get a backflip or a dell aero when it's released.

Not really. The post even gives some instructions on how to do it, but it can only be done with Motorola internal tools, which are not publicly available, or leaked yet.
If someone leaked the tools we might be able to root, but even if it happened, they would probably have to be leaked over again for any newer os builds to be rooted (like when 2.1 arrives in Q3).
Basically Motorola has locked this phone down in a way no other android device is, and there just aren't enough of them out there for people to spend a lot of time hacking on them.
I'm in a position it would be expensive for me to leave AT&T, but the only decent android device that will run 3G at this point is the Nexus One. I find it hard to cough up $529 for a phone that has issues with the touchscreen and hardware buttons, but I might do it anyway.
Hey guys, I'm pretty new to android (was a WM man then went to iPhone OS developing) but ATT just sent me this backflip and while yes it is a little limited I was wondering exactly what advantages to root there are? I've figured out how to side load my own homebrew apps and whatnot but what else could root allow us to do on the phone?
I'm assuming it would allow different cooks? and of course remove that ATT bull**** on the device. I kind of like blur, I definitely wouldn't be sad if it was gone but it isn't super terrible either.
just curious really

Could you elaborate on the "side loading" process?
Idk if this help AT ALL but let me know!
I got into Safe Mode and I'm using Astro file manager and I got into /etc/security folder which has attcacerts file, cacerts file, manfacerts file and otacerts file. I had seen that we were waiting for the certificate files or something and had stumbled upon these. I looked in the attcacerts one and there was alot of coding with root in them and stuff so I don't know if this can be used or not. Let me know. Thanks.

HTC ARIA rooting

The phone is scheduled for release on 6/20/10, but some people already have one. Anyone know how to root the phone? Also, do we have to wait for the official 2.2 update for it, or is there are 2.2 ROM I can install on it, once rooted. I am making a big change here from WINDOWS and feel like a noob all over again. Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I just picked it up today, its a great phone. but there is no root as of yet(the phone isnt even officially released until tomorrow) but there may be a root someday soon or someday in the future or maybe not at all. and no there isnt a froyo update for it yet, but there may be an official one in the future, its up to AT&T.

Ha! 'Nuff said! If it was up to AT&T there would never be an update.
HTC will probably update it to 2.2 later this year, but even then it will be a crippled version. AT&T won't allow tethering, no sideloading apps, and any number of other things they want changed.
It's a shame, it woulda been a nice phone on any other network.
If the hardware is as similar to the HTC Legend as reported, then maybe it's rootable after all using the same method. I don't know if the Bell/Virgin Canada Legend has been rooted yet but it has the same 3G frequencies as AT&T. I wonder if the Legend ROM can be forced onto the Aria. Then you'd be unshackled from AT&T's silly Android restrictions!

Gingerbread Test Build? Real or Fake?

Some people might have seen that there is a thread on the motorola support forums about a test build of gingerbread on the d2g. I was wondering if anyone thinks it is fake. I don't know much about android, but I do know that the linux kernel changes and that the phone can easily be made to show any android version desired. In the picture the linux kernel is 2.6.32.9 with some random strings after which I don't know how to decipher. This kernel is the same as my phone for those initial numbers, and a quick google search tells me that android 2.3.4 the most recent gingerbread uses kernel 2.6.35 not 32, so is it safe to assume that this picture and likely the whole thread and information are fake? I'm just curious.
EDIT: Here's the forum link with pic, I forgot to add it
https://supportforums.motorola.com/message/374933
EVery other Moto phone seems to be getting Gingerbread so I'm sure it is real especially considering if it was fake Moto probably would have squashed the post.
CellZealot has confirmed that the D2G Gingerbread is currently in development at Moto and the TBH guys have always been reliable and in the know.
It will get to us in time so yes we will have Gingerbread.
Will anyone bother to figure out how to root it is the question because the developers have all seemed to shy away from developing for the D2G.
I hope z4 root still works when it gets Gingerbread or else I rather just stay on 2.2
Judging by what happened with Droid X updates - you can kiss root goodbye at least for now. Not that it matters since there is no update at all released.
I thought I read somewhere GB is prerooted? Could be mistaken though.

It's good to hear the news (assuming that it's true)
But like the other guys said, if it cannot be rooted, I'd rather stay in froyo
Sent from my DROID2 GLOBAL using XDA App
Official releases are never "pre rooted" and the new GB releases will likely be more difficult and may block established exploits...BUT, we will almost certainly be able to root the new build despite whatever blocks are in place. They may require loading a rooted system image from an already rooted device as we have done with other GB leaks but there will be a way to run this build on rooted phones until a new stand alone exploit is developed.

Agreed. I'm OK with what I've got. What's the big deal about this push? My position is to" ...leave well enough alone..." I really like the phone I have created (nothing special, D2G: root, bootstrap, Fission 2.4.3, etc.) I'm afeared that we'll be jacked-up by something from moto or verizon so this device is fk'd. "Open-source" my ass... it's all about $. Look at what is happening to the HTC group... I'm sure they "got a talkin' to..." by Amazon, Blockbuster, etc. and they succumbed. Whatever, Google/Android is sucking "the Man's" wang. We're hosed though; the "alternative" is a monster (crapple) much like Google/Android is becoming. Fk it.

android is still open source, but your misinterpreting the actions of the manufacturers as being androids fault. google makes android, when they make it they release the source, so its open source, so developers do what they want to it, that IS open source, although the android market isnt open source so anything market related is directly controlled by google. the manufacturers take this android open source project, and they add their own junk to it, then they put it on a machine with a locked bootloader. so even though the OS is still open source, the manufacturers lock it down their own way and have every right to for now, but google is looking to change that with ice cream.
iirc, Motorola has already announced that their new phones will have their bootloaders unlocked (except for Verizon stuff, or, rather, all models for the US market).
And last I heard Milestone 3 will be unlocked.

They did? I thought it was just that they were considering the idea of making their phones more open and unlocked, but no guarantees that they will, and even if they make the non US phones unlocked, they still said they will take the Carriers into consideration, so Verizon could just as easily demand full and complete lockdown and keep that going for a while, unless/until enough people complain to them too.
I mentioned that Verizon models won't be unlocked in the post you quoted.
Also, to be honest, I don't really care about VZW exclusive models as long as Milestone 3 comes out and is the same as Droid 3 (save for being GSM instead of CDMA).
I can't really remember the exact source for “no lock on new non-US models”, though. I guess I can just ask them via certain channels.

Buying an XT720 - freezing issues with 2.2 roms?

I work for a cell phone company and very often see an issue with the xt720 where it freezes, but the lights at the bottom remain on. It can't be remedied unless you do a Battery pull.
My HD2 broke and my company has offered to let me buy the xt720 for very cheap, however I need a phone that won't constantly freeze on me.
so my question is - do the custom roms fix the freezing issue? And do the 2.2 roms help with the speed of the phone? I've read mixed reports.
thanks!

My feeling is that the freezing is related to crappy sd cards. In any case, once I replaced my sd card with a faster one that problem stopped even on stock 2.1. However, some people have problems even after replacing the sd card. So, there's likely some sort of sd card compatibility issue but I don't think anyone knows how to identify which sdcards will work and which ones won't. The one motorola shipped with XT720 is awful, though.
Same here. The Milestone XT720 came with a free 8GB Class 2 micro SDCard. When I replaced it with a class 10 the problem seemed to vanish.
But I also removed lookout so it might also be the culprit. Have to check on it...

Well most all the ones shipped with it were awful, They don't send the same one, I have 3 different brands with my best one being sandisk. And I think most of the time it is class 4 but I got one class 2. You could get lucky and get a decent brand. But Mz is right it is most def. an sdcard issue. tell them to throw in a kingston and it's a deal! lol. But if you get the sandisk I think you will be ok.
Hi rkarsk,
I understand that you are thinking about getting yourself this device. My advice "Don't Even Think". If its really cheap then go ahead. But If your looking for a better replacement for your previous device, then, its better If you don't consider this as an option. I must admit that we have great developers who work like hell to give us all the current features we are enjoying. Without them this phone is nothing now. Finally its up to you. But,remember this phone cannot do all that it promised in the advertisements and is also pretty outdated

I don't know about that, I have a Nexus S now but still love my XT. It really depends on if you don't mind maintaining it by keeping up with this forum and flashing ROM's and updates. With the right ROM and the right tweaks it's a pretty darn good phone. Just my opinion, it's an issue where both sides could be right. If you are getting it real cheap and don't have the opportunity to get something better I would say go for it, and this way when the opportunity arises when you can get another, you will have this phone to play with. With CM7 on the edge of being complete I feel I might not even have needed my nexus S, but good thing I got my Nexus really cheap. But I enjoy maintaining the XT, I like flashing new things and seeing the improvements, kind of like a hobby and I am learning something.
I agree with you but if the phone is under $100 with no opportunity to get something better cheap can't really go wrong I guess
I agree. This phone has plenty of potential but it also takes time to learn the hacks. Otherwise you have a 2.1 with a good camera. Upgrade it, commit to getting the tweaks right for you and it is a worthwhile investment and hobby. Plus it works when you call people too.
You guys have sold me . I have lots of experience flashing roms so I don't think I will find it too daunting. Played with the phone at work today, not bad at all!
For those of you with no freezing issues could you please post the model of your sd card? Might narrow down my search for one if I have any issues (or help someone in the future).
cheers
32gb class 10 from Topram. Bought it on eBay. Have purchased from them before so I know they sell "real" cards.
What I also found is that you need to overclock this phone to get the best from it.
Get yourself "Milestone Overclock" from this forum or from the Android Market and push your phone to 1000Mhz.
I have it running like that 24/7 for almost 7 months on various ROMS even though they say to use it only on stock ROM, and I rarely have a lag problem. If you leave it on stock CPU settings it can get a bit frustrating!

Ya, agree

I agree. This phone has plenty of potential but it also takes time to learn the hacks. Otherwise you have a 2.1 with a good camera. Upgrade it, commit to getting the tweaks right for you and it is a worthwhile investment and hobby. Plus it works when you call people too.

I have a doubt, since Google acquired Motorola, Is there any change of the boot-loader being unlocked. If so, does it mean we can further push the limitations of this device?

You guys have sold me . I have lots of experience flashing roms so I don't think I will find it too daunting. Played with the phone at work today, not bad at all!
For those of you with no freezing issues could you please post the model of your sd card? Might narrow down my search for one if I have any issues (or help someone in the future).
cheers

The XT bootloader was slated to be unlocked sometime in the last quarter of 2011, but here we are at the beginning of that quarter and nothing new. We can only upgrade only so far based on memory and other factors. At this point, I think that the CM7 builds are about as far as this phone can go. But hey, that is way better than the 2.1 that it was only given by the manufacturer.

Happened a few months ago, but I am pretty sure it isn't the whole Motorola company but just a piece of it. Can't remember exactly but there is a thread on it somewhere in here.

No, we've never been slated for an unlock. The conditions Motorola gave for unlocks are (1) carrier allows and (2) part of a regular update. We're never getting any updates.
Matt and Mark of Motorola support forums confirmed that XT720 isn't even on the table for unlocks (they've deleted their getsatisfaction so that thread is toast).
Ahh! I remember that now. Was just thinking and this thread popped in my mind.

yes, still using the original SD 8GB class 6 that came with the phone
and yes that card is very crappy, a few friends of mine we all got the phone the exact same day
both of them had their 8GB died on them
just replace it with a good 16GB or larger if you can afford it
