I own a Desire HD, and there is an app called Car Panel, that automatically opens when you use car kit, and gets you with a simplified user interface.
It lets you use locations service, phone dialer, contacts, search, etc.
There is no such app in Sensation.....

Ninja, the Sensation Car Upgrade Kit CU S490 is required for the car panel.
Once you insert your ohone in de car-cradle, the car panel pops-up. Costs: around 60 euro's (www.expansys.com).
How-ever it is also required to use the special microUSB car charger that is included in the pack. If you use a normal car charger, the car panel won't work.

What's different about the car charger in the CU S490? From what I was seeing last night while searching for car chargers/docks it seems all of the car upgrade kits just come with the CC C200 car charger.

With the HTC Nexus One there was a magnet in the car holder that would auto launch the car home app when the phone was placed in the holder.
UPDATE: Now that I have my phone I see your problem, Car home is not even visible in the market

I think that Car panel is HTC's Sense version of Googles Car Home app
If the Sensation does not come with car panel you should be able to get car home from the Android Market for easier use while driving, might have to also find the Car Home launcher app to launch it as that is a seperate APK.

Well I just upgraded to Sensation from Desire HSU and I found out that the Premium Navigation license does not migrate with my account - a rather unpleasant surprise.
So I am considering switching to Copilot and I was wondering if there is a way to integrate it with the Car Panel and Locations as I am pretty comfortable with those. Has anyone managed to hack Car Panel apk and switch the navigation app?

Have you seen or heard what's supposed to happen when loading the Tmo Sensation into the HTC car dock? I've heard something is supposed to launch. I've tried that Dock Mode thing but that's just a desk dock mode similar to the N1 when it is docked.
I've tried car panel out and we aren't missing much. It looks nice but it swaps eye candy for functionality. Now I'm wondering about Location that everyone keeps talking about.

That's interesting. Do you know who was responsible for the other ommissions like Locations?
It's not as good as Google Car Home imo. It only has the 6 buttons and has limited functionality within those. I have my Car Home loaded with different music, nav and call apps. Car Panel is eye candy for sure though.

I'm looking for a charging speaker dock ( al a ipod / iphone ) for a HTC Desire.
Ideally to charge the phone and play music via, then the phone can be used as an alarm clock.
Any ideas ?
Thanks
Well.. I don't think the Desire outputs audio through the USB port, so you'd have an ugly audio cable running from the dock to the top of the Desire...
I'd also be looking for one of these. I guess it could use bluetooth to avoid the cable issue?

Don't you think we will soon see a device very similar to the Nexus One dock -- which has both wired audio out, and also bluetooth audio -- once paired, it plays through your speakers without the phone in the dock. It also is set up to be used as a bedside clock for alarm, with dimmer display. You may know all this already, but just in case you don't, here is the Desire's first cousin's (Nexus One's) dock... just to show that what you want is probably coming very soon.

It could work if the dock charges the phone while it's sending the audio thrue bluetooth hope some 1 well go further with this idea...

I have the Nexus Dock that was sold by Google. It's great for GPS and I have to say it is OK at best for hands free phone. Maybe in a quieter car (Chevy Blazer here) but I have a hard time hearing people even at maximum volume. My car is a little loud though so maybe someone else may have better input for that issue I have. It seems with some of the older roms on my phone I had a few connection issues(random bluetooth connection drops) but on some of the newer roms I haven't had that problem at all. As far as a media player.. meh If you like listening to your music through a CB radio speaker then this is the dock for you! It is very well made as far as construction. I've had mine almost a year now and it still works with no issues. In all reality the music player doesn't sound terrible through the speaker but it doesn't sound great, the phone feature is OK and navigation is great. It is a good product but just like any other product it is not perfect.

Correct me if I'm wrong (I don't have a car dock, and the htc website is out of stock now),
but can't you set your phone to use bluetooth A2DP to connect to a bluetooth capable car stereo automatically when you put it in the dock? Or is that the situation you have where you talk about bad audio quality?
Also, can't you get car stereos/kits that give you handsfree speakerphone using your stereo and an external mic?
For me, the dock is little better than a car charger if it doesn't auto connect to such newfangled wizardry to solve these problems automagically (the dock does actually CHARGE the phone too, right?).

The dock's built-in speaker has not so great audio. You can connect it to a bluetooth capable stereo, I just happen to not have one of those. I am sure there are kits out there that do all of the above. Yes it does charge the phone as well. The phone connects to the dock's speaker via Bluetooth and that's what I meant about the previous random bluetooth drops. For what I use it for, mostly navigation and charging it serves it's purpose.

Oh, the car dock has an extra built in speaker? I kinda assumed you were talking about audio coming from the phone's built in speaker. I see. Thanks for the heads up, in any case.
Arkon has good universal car mounts. The good thing is that it is future proof assuming that phones don't get super wide.

gonna try out one of these
http://www.dealextreme.com/p/universal-car-windshield-swivel-mount-for-htc-g5-39882
please know that if you order it, it ships from China. With all the Chinese New Year festivities going on there it will probably take 4 weeks to get here.
From Amazon
I bought this dock: http://www.amazon.com/Kensington-K3...h-Compatible/dp/B003Y3BEV4/ref=dp_ob_title_ce
And although is supposedly for the iPhone, it works great with the N1. I modded the base, so it will hold the tip of this charger: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000S5Q9CA/ref=oss_product?ie=UTF8&redirect=true
The dock you can either put it in the windshield or in one of the vents. I put mine in a vent, because it is closer to my hand and I don't have to reach to the windshield to operate the phone, when I am using the car home.
I hope that this info helps.
I've had no issues with the Google car dock.
Happily rockin' the Google Car Dock as well. I love the docks with this phone!
I used this tutorial

did the job nice! and cheap too!
I have been looking for a dock and the google dock is no longer being sold by google and is only available on ebayor amazon, there is a buy now on ebay for $79, and it costs $185 on amazon! It looks really nice though, it original sold for $55, so I may shell out the premium to get the only really nice dock i have seen
If I didn't already have the google car dock, I'd probably give this a go:

I'd love to hack an audio out port directly only my official N1 car dock....other than that, it's fantastic.
I have the official Google/HTC car dock, and am satisfied with it. The speaker in it is OK, but not great if you have a loud vehicle. Communication between the dock and phone is via Bluetooth, despite it being physically clipped in. I had a small issue where I found that music would play via the dock speaker, but phone calls would only play on the phone's speaker, oddly.
Also, after taking a road trip with my N1 as a GPS unit before I got the dock, I found that a standard car 12v --> USB adapter with a microUSB cable did not provide enough juice to power the phone while using Google Nav with GPS. It would slowly discharge the battery over time. This happened with 3 different 12v--> USB adapters, so maybe most of them out there don't put out enough amps.
Anyways, I got mine last fall from HTC's site, which was (and still is) backordered. I did eventually get it, though.
Because I'm an xda forum noob, it won't let me post the URL... but just Google "shopamerica" and "HTC" and find accessories for the Nexus One from the HTC America site.
the only problem with non Google Car Dock/Car Mount is that phone dialer never show in landscape
is there any trick to emulate google car dock to allow dialer to be in landscape ?
thanks

there is a little workaround for that - the MOTOROLA T505 (google it) hands-free device works miracles..it has a decent, loud, inbuilt speaker, communicates via bluetooth with the N1, and transmits via FM to your car-stereo. it searches for "least used/weakest signal" on the entire FM frequency band, announces verbally the FM frequency you need to set your radio to, and off you go. as a bonus, it has an inbuilt rechargeable battery so you can take it anywhere.Works for making calls and music 'broadcasts'
Ok people, hopefully I will shed some light on this subject. Like most of you I own the european version of the Galaxy S, the GT-I9000. I wanted to have both the desk dock and car dock but found out those were either out of stock or unavailable. So I ordered the same versions of these accesories for the Vibrant (T959) from Amazon, I cannot post links yet but you can search for "vibrant mount oem" and you will find them
The I9000 was a perfect fit for both accesories when they arrived, both the car dock and desk dock modes work with alternate solutions found in the market, as the Samsung Home Desk and Car Home are no longer available, but the 3.5 mm line out jack is another story...
After doing some research over the web and in these forums I understood that in order to make the line out present in both Samsun docks work you NEED to use the official Samsung apps. Samsung released new versions of those that work with Froyo, they are called:
Desk Home Samsung Vibrant 2
Car Home Samsung Vibrant 2
(you can find them under those names in the web version of the Market)
This is the part when this post turns into a request, apparently those apps are only available in the US and Canada (where the Vibrant is sold), could someone fetch the APK's and post them in this thread?
Thank you very much
Sergio C.
Not sure if I understood all correctly but here are both apk: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11029148&postcount=45
Thanks a lot stepsch!
I will test and post ASAP!
I am using the car apk. Works very well.
I am also using stuff like this while driving: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=925047
Prob: the T959 Vibrant car mount doesn't has a hole at the correct place for the build-in camera of the international i9000 version.
So, I drilled a hole thru the mount and the slider at the back. Not nice but working.
Perhaps you can clear this up for me then.
AFAIK the US docks have a different pinout on the microusb that does not trigger the (Euro Samsung market) car and desk home apps.
The US apps do not work properly on Euro i9000 due to a different media player being needed and so not accessable from the app and the car app if I remember FC'd.
So how have you set these up?
My phone: Samsung Galaxy S i9000 (international) bought officially in Germany
apps from the link
original Samsung car mount for T595 Vibrant (ECS-M979BEGSTA)
When I push the phone into the car mount the car app starts immediately as designed. No need to plug the cable in the cigarette lighter. The phone recognizes the USB plug with its special designed contacts as "car mode".
But therefore you do not need the original car mount. I am also using a third party USB charging connect (similar to this). Like a cigarette lighter but with USB connector instead of the big lighter hole.
When I am using the original USB cable (for charging or data) of the Samsung the app starts also. Seems that it recognize anything out of the 12V car electricity?!?
Don't know if all third party USB mounting sockets will provide same comfort.
AFAIK the US docks have a different pinout

Some, right. But all said the Vibrant is nearly similar. So I tried and it works.

They are the Euro OEM apps btw.

Home Dock
I received my oem samsung home dock last week. It is simply amazingly handy! The fact that it can't sync was bothering me, but then i realized: who cares? nobody syncs with kies! It keeps the phone charged, the audio goes to the speakers, and the phone goes in landscape mode even without the desk home app! Highly recommended!
I picked up the Infuse Car dock with my Infuse and I LOVE IT. It works great, its very very good build quality. Nice to have the dock always plugged in for power and I can just pop my phone in and go. Also really nice that Samsung Car Home auto opens when I plug it in to the dock.
To anyone that uses their phone for calls or music while driving I highly recommend it.
Did you pick it up at an AT&T store? I am eager to check one out, as I plan to use the phone quite a bit as GPS unit for my car.
Thanks!

I bought both as well. AT&T had special that if you buy two accessories you get the third free.
Infuse should arrive tomorrow so I'll be able to try them out. I have always used ProClip USA's mounts but will compare it to Samsung's. I currently have an adjustable adaptor that works with iPhone 3G and Captivate within protective cases. They have holders for naked units that fit perfectly, but it is a hassle to remove phones from Otterboxes only to put them back after short rides.
i just got the home dock but am returning it. the reason is that it is not flexible enough. it has a micro usb port but it will not pass through the usb connection to my computer so i can mount the sdcard or pass through mhl to hdmi. this makes it no more than a 40$ charger that holds the phone.
i have a bad micro usb cable that i plan to make into a jig that can trip the dock mode or other things. i can hack up the dock but would rather exchange it for the car dock. i also want to see how much a second mhl adapter is. i would like to make an all in one dock.
Car Dock application
I purchased a Infuse yesterday with the car dock. The only way we can get the phone to send audio out through the docks 3.5mm is by using the Samsung Car Home application. This application is lacking to say the least. I've tried CarHome Ultra and still no audio through the dock.
Is there a work around for this or another dock application that works?
Thanks,
JAFO

Its freaking AMAZING! ALL audio goes through the bluetooth like watching a news cast with flash, watching a baseball game, and of course bluetooth calling. Its all plug and play and anyone can do it!

Is the one I got. Its does come with full ipod control cable, but meh.... I just use the bluetooth!
Hope that helps!

no methods that have been tested yet. there is an app for the sgs that can control it but it may need a kernel mod to work.
edit: try this https://market.android.com/details?id=net.muteheadlight.dockredir
let me know if it works

Hey thanks, it works! But the only bad thing is that the sound is still bad. There is no BASS hardly at all compared to the sound the headphone port throws out. This is the same problem with the Samsung car dock app. Its like Samsung crossed the wires when soldering the wires to the port. It sounds like mono and not STEREO. I wish this could be fixed?

All i use is BT audio when in the dock, it works amazing! The BT actually sounds good unlike the Atrix/Inspire did.

I can't speak for Atrix, but Inspire sounds pretty darn good through my Parrot set up.

Yeah I was looking at the Parrot setup before the Grom Audio.... The sounds outta the bluetooth is pretty good... Also you can hear the differences between the equalizer settings.....
Has anyone tried to trick our phone into thinking its in a htc dock to get the dock mode to kick in? i was thinking maybe trying to bridge a few pins on the usb. anyone think/heard of something like this working?
Yes there is a thread on this. Involves placing a particular ohm resistor across certain lines of the the cable
What was the thread called?

I dunno about you, but I have a dock mode icon in my app drawer, and when I click that, it turns on.
I do not have a dock mode icon in my tray. Tmo sensation, idk, but maybe that's why.

You need a third party launcher to be able to see it. Rosie hides the shortcut.
Install launcher pro or adw and you'll see it show up in the app drawer.

To build a usb cable that will place your phone in dock mode (either car or desk) see these threads:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1133956&page=14
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=820275 (for Samsung but the resistor values might be applicable)
I just use Dock Simulator to launch Home Dock. I have it setup to launch automatically when connected to a charging source. Don't need it with the oem car dock since it has the pin outs.
US T-Mo Sensation - stock not rooted.
Thanks for the help guys. I'm really trying for the inline usb trick. If I get it going expect a write up.

I think you connect pin 4 to pin 5. Not sure if a resistor is required between them.
I just bought the Seidio dock from their site and it works great. Phone does into dock mode as soon as you put it on the dock, whether a power source is plugged in or not. For $40 it was a pretty good purchase.

Open it and take a picture of the connector. I need to know what makes it go into that mode! Please!
A resistor? Diode? Just some wire?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=16961401#post16961401
Dock mode - 70 kOhms resistor between pin4 and ground (pin 5)
Car mode - 9.1 kOhms resistor between pin4 and ground (pin 5)
