How to listen to music?

Hi there,
I used to use a SonyEricsson Bluetooth Stereo thingy to listen to music and while the quality was decent (no skipping) the battery of the earphones doesn't last long enough to make this a good solution if you are on a long travel. The other problem is that you can't use bluetooth earphones on a plane.
So, since the HTC standard earphones are awful, I bought this adapter

and I am now using my Sennheiser earphones.
As you can see from other customers' comments this adapter is really crap and as soon as you touch it the sound becomes muffled and you need to readjust it so that the contacts work again. Basically you can't listen to music with the phone in your pocket.
So the question is: what is your solution to listen to music? Is the HTC wired remote reliable in terms of having good contacts with the body of the phone? Is there another adapter that has more stable contacts.
This is becoming a major drawback for me and I am not sure I want my next phone to have all the hassles that the HTC proprietary connector implies.

PS: I know there is another thread about this but my point here is that I don't care about having or not having a microphone, or what Expansys is selling.... I want to be sure that someone is using something with good results!!

I have just received the adapter from Hong Kong. It works great! No comparison with the one sold on Expansys. This one fits well into the USB socket and there's no problem with the sound disappearing when moving the phone.

Works like a charm, no issues, and battery life on it lasts 6 hours, enough for me.
Best thing about it is the ability to skip music and pause and play music without taking your device out of your pocket or holster, bad thing is everytime you do, your device goes on and battery can drain if it doesn't switch of soon or other buttons may be pressed when it is on in your pocket or holster.
Another good thing is also the radio, and I know that it is just a perk, but good enough, if your sick of your songs, listen to the radio.

Nexus One Car Dock (official) doesn’t have audio out?

google dot com slash phone now has the car dock listed ($55) but says “Sorry, this item is temporarily not available.”
The PDF that they link to talks about a built in speaker but doesn’t mention a audio out port for connecting to your car stereo. Could they have really left this out?
Edit: The listing disappeared after only a couple of minutes and unfortunately I refreshed before I grabbed a screenshot. I did save the help page and the PDF, although both are still accessible on Google’s servers.

Love the way the phone slides into it... so much easier than my 3rd party POS holder I'm using right now...
After checking out the PDF... looks like you're right... no audio jack... but no real need from one. You should be able to plug an audio jack into the phone still... would've been nicer to just leave it in the dock though and have audio transferred through the gold connectors... Why Google?
Edit: In the PDF it talks about how the dock automatically enables BlueTooth. Guessing that's how you're supposed to connect it to your cars audio.

The pdf actually mentions sending data through bluetooth on the dock. It probably does have an audio jack.

You can't push data through the gold connectors.
The pdf actually mentions playing music through the phone -> bluetooth.
There probably is a connection on there, did the desk dock specify the audio connection?
It's gonna be retarded if it plays audio through the docks speaker phone, wtf.

I don't think it was supposed to be up originally as it showed not available. I'd guess it would show up pretty soon though as a result.

I think it looks great, but it is really dissapointing that you cannot use a bluetooth headset while it is docked. I do not think that the speakerphone will be clear enough with the amount of time I am on the phone. I guess now I know that it looks like and how it functions, I will be looking in to another option.

The dock just came back up on the purchasing website and now seems to be officially for sale.

$55 seems a bit excessive imo. Especially considering that I can't even make a phone call while using it. Speaker phone? hardly. The speaker phone is **** on my nexus.
It looks like it wont work with a case either. I dont understand why they think people aren't using cases for their phones.

As long as you tell the phone to to pair with the dock you should be fine to pair with anything else.

the product description says that the speakers "enhance the in-car music and media experience." How exactly do pathetic speakers enhance audio? what's the point if it has to go through speakers instead of the very common audio jack equipped head unit.
you CAN still plug in an audio jack to the phone when it is docked. but then again i can still plug an audio jack into the phone when it's on the desk dock. I thought the whole bloody point of the bluetooth dock was so that you don't have to plug in the audio jack, what's the point of a bluetooth dock that still requires you to plug the phone in?!!??!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I cancelled my order until this issue is confirmed and or resolved. until then, i will continue sitting my phone in a cup holder and connecting an audio cable and charging cable.

Yes! Thank You! Well, I'm guessing that they figure people have bluetooth enabled stereos? Can the N1 even transfer audio through BT? Now I just need to get the BT working lol.

[Q] Car Dock

Folks,
This is probably a stupid question, but I own the car dock and a Samsung Fascinate... obviously. My question is the car dock only plugs into the microusb port but has a connector on the rear, and comes with a 3.5mm audio jack.
That being said when completely connected to the dock and radio it does not play audio except from the built-in speaker.
What is this about? Is there something I am missing? A setting somewhere or... ?

The 3.5 jack is "supposed" to work when android 2.2 (froyo) is released for the phone.

Too bad the software portion responsible for this can't be ported back to 2.1

Arrrggh.. I bought one too along with a desk dock. Only to find out it's useless. I'm returning them while I still can.

Thought i would chime in here.
I too am waiting/hoping for froyo to fix the 3.5 jack but in the mean time i just turn my phone over and insert it backwards into the car dock when i need the audio out and plug both the usb and the audio in.
It works for me to, at the least, buy me time until i can do right.

Fascinate Voo Doo One Point Two

Easy fix...get a head unit that supports bluetooth and run your music through that. With hands free laws taking over everywhere it's not a bad move anyway. I've got that setup in my car and absolutely love it! Music is very clear and sounds great, not like radio transmitters. Since it's charging while playing you don't lose any battery life at all.

While I wouldn't call swapping out a head unit an "easy fix", I do second that comment that it is awesome and convenient to stream audio through bluetooth to the car.

2.2.1 is fully functioning and out now. The dock 3.5mm outputs work, and all in life is well. Be happy guys! PS: Go push the 2.2.1 leak (any of the versions, there are multiples!) onto your phone!
It does not void the warranty, if you have a hardware issue just use a windows PC and ODIN to jam the DI01 or DL09 stock unrooted load on the phone and your all set for warranty support/exchange. It takes 10 minutes to ODIN back to stock, easy as pie!

I have to second this. I initially just used the dock with the phone in backwards under 2.1, and directly plugged my USB and Audio leads directly into the phone. Since I flashed to 2.2.1 leak, it has been working wonderfully the way it's supposed to.
I really was pleased with the dock when I first got it, it's solidly built. Having to wait a short while for all of the features to work was a minor inconvenience to me, but now I'm really happy I stuck it out.

I am on DL30 right now with the car dock and the set up is still not doing audio through the audio out. To the people who are using it without a problems are you using the stock music player or a different player and is it working for calls, and audiobooks as well? For some reason I am having no luck wondering if it is.because.I don't use touchwiz apps.

Does this dock fit the phone with a case on?

The only ones that will work with a case are the universal ones that clamp on.

On DL30, I have to open the Car Cradle application, and if the phone is in the dock, a little 'speaker' toggle icon appears next to the 'Exit' icon, this will switch audio to the dock output. It doesn't auto-switch.
There are applications on the market that will auto-switch based on the phone activity, such as Tasker. All DL30 does is enable the ability to use the external audio connection on the dock.
Now, I don't use TW either, I use LauncherPro, so I'm not sure if TW will auto-switch or not. I'm betting it probably will, as previously only TW would auto-launch the Desk Cradle and Car Cradle apps when the appropriate dock was detected, in all other launcher frontends I've had to start the application manually or use apps like Tasker mentioned above that would detect the dock and launch the associated app and settings.

I've noticed that the audio out of the car dock is terrible. Anyone else?

As far as I know, you need the stock music player. This is because you need to have the Car Cradle app open or the sound will just play through your phone speaker. Also, the Car Cradle app has a speaker "button" that you will need to toggle.

You need the Car Cradle to toggle the external aux connection, but you are not limited to stock music players, etc, to utilize it. I have Google Maps/Navigation prompts running through it, as well as Subsonic for music playback. As long as I've launched the Car Cradle app and toggled the connection on, all audio that would normally be output by the rear speaker (as far as any audio that has been produced on my phone so far when docked) uses the external aux properly.
As far as sound quality goes, my sound has been very good so far. I have engine noise coming through the USB charger, but once that's disconnected, it's quiet and high quality. Now, once I get this noise suppressor connected to my power source, that engine buzz will go away for good.

Try plugging some headphones into the phone and listen to a song. Then plug into the car dock and listen to the same song.

Not only. I just got SlipGrip case and it fits perfectly with OtterBox Commuter on. The only problem for me was suction cup which is big (3.5") so it didn't stick to my tomtom adhesive disk on the dashboard. But it holds to windshield very good. I can't post any links yet so you have to google it ("SlipGrip Car Holder For The Samsung Fascinate With Case")

Ok, I tested 5 different scenarios. In the Fascinate Car Dock with aux enabled, on an FM transmitter, and on three separate headphones: standard iPod earbuds, Klipsch in-ear headphones, and Sony studio headphones from my recording studio gear. I am on SuperClean 2.1, and used both the included Music app and Subsonic for playback on each scenario. For comparison, I also performed all scenarios on three other devices: an Archos 605, an iPod Classic, and an iPod Touch.
With all of that, I couldn't discern an audible difference between the Fascinate and the other devices tested in the corresponding scenario.
The reason I stopped using my Archos was because the Fascinate's audio was just as good, and with Subsonic negating the need to sync my media library, it really has become an almost perfect portable media platform for me. Now, if I could only get the aux on the car dock to work without the need for the cradle app, it would be perfect.

Finally fixed bluetooth in the car while using the AUX IN jack

Tonight I made my first accessory purchase at the local Verizon store... as their prices have always been pretty bad, but I have a military discount of 15%, so I bit the bullet and purchased an iBolt cradle system. If you haven't seen it, there is a review in the accessory section, it's pretty spot on, but this important update is for those of us who don't have A2DP streaming in the car, and are forced to use the AUX IN jack.
Long story short, when using this dock, you have the option of sending the sound thru your micro USB port or out the phones speaker in back. This dock comes with a nine foot long cable that has micro USB at one end, and regular USB and a 3.5mm audio jack at the other. This beautiful setup allows you to not touch the evil headphone jack (trump card) on the phone, but rather it lets you the phone play music out the USB connection while retaining Bluetooth phone connectivity thru your cars Bluetooth connection! (while charging)
Silly that I had to buy a $32 device to get functionality that the AT&T version of our phone has natively... but at least it's fixed!

Not trying to be a jerk or anything, but what is the advantage of playing music through the USB instead of bluetooth? I actually like the BT option - plays music but pauses when a call come in and lowers the volume for GPS directions. Works great all at the same time...

There's a large portion of G3 owners who do not have bluetooth streaming (A2DP). Just because you have bluetooth phone connectivity does not mean you have bluetooth streaming. We are forced to use the aux in jack in the car to listen to music. I think a large portion of S3 owners simply tried to use the headphones jack on the phone... But if you do that, you cannot use bluetooth. Every sound is routed thru the headphones jack. You cannot toggle this.
So, using the iBolt cradle, witch ports the sound out via usb instead of the headphones jack, I am able to retain my cars bluetooth functionality.
Side note, not sure if you know this, but the sound quality of bluetooth streamed music is pretty bad compared to a cabled connection.

A day after I purchased the iBolt I received this little gadget in the mail from ebay.
USB Bluetooth Adapter
For under $10 it gives you the same A2DP bluetooth audio streaming. But, the difference is it doesn't sound nearly as good for the lower end of the spectrum. But, in a pinch it's awesome, and for the price, you can't beat it. I have it as a backup for now.
I took about 30 min and hid the iBolt cabling today. I like the fact that I moved the cradle to the top left of the windshield, away from the center console. Will post some pics later today of the install.

I am surprised at how easy the phone is to use with my left hand, from the steering wheel. Retaining the bluetooth functionality, specificallly my integrated microphone, really makes this work around worth every penny. Hope it helps someone else!

No worries, none taken. I am just ecstatic to be playing music via S3 thru my car stereo and still be able to use the cars bluetooth for phone calls! Now if we could come up with a fix for this damn NO SIM error, I would be in heaven. LOL!

I-bolt rocks. Bought one the other day. Search for best price. Down in the low to mid $30 range now depending on shipping and coupons.

Could anybody solve my problem? My car doesn't have a usb port so I cant use the iBolt to play music through it. I use the cassette player to audio jack and use bluetooth talk through my car speakers. Is there a solution to use bluetooth while using the audio jack?

Yes. I don't know why I didn't think of this sooner, but on anther board, someone brought this up and it works, albeit ghetto'ish.
Mount the phone somewhere in the car where you can speak towards the mic. Plug the cassette tape adapter into the headphones jack. When a call comes in, just answer the phone keeping the headphone jack in use, and the sound will come thru your stereo, but the mic you will be using is the one on the phone. Talked to multiple people who all heard me just fine. (even with the mic pointed downwards!)

The cable is exactly the right length to mount the ibolt anywhere in the car, hell I think we could mount it on the rear window, lol! There is space behind the base of the center console where you can tuck away any extra cable you have before you route the cable to the jacks. I decided to use an add on 2.1a USB car charger (cig lighter adapter) vs the cars internal USB as I don't think the MINI USB pumps out anything more than 450 mA (1\4 what the adapter puts out I bought seperately)

Does that require a custom Recovery and/or ROM, perhaps? I'd like to keep things relatively stock for now, though am OK with tweaks. Plus, the iBolt looks convenient to use in my car.

So how do you know if you have bluetooth streaming? aren't all the G3's the same in that respect? Or is it up to what your car can do?

I know I can do that but I want to use the bluetooth in my car to make calls(my car doesn't have bluetooth audio only calls). When I use the headphone jack to make calls people say their voice echoes back but if I use the cars bluetooth its fine.

Bluetooth calling options for car?

I've read a lot about options for getting bluetooth audio in the car, and even started a thread on it. But after thinking about it more, I realized that if I was going to have bluetooth audio in the car, I might as well be able to take calls in the car, as well. I tried the Belkin adapter, and it's great for receiving music and calls, but the sound from my end on calls is disappointing. I've called people from it and also have left myself voicemails and listened to them, and it just doesn't sound very good.
Any advice on bluetooth for the car that has good call audio? Been considering maybe this GoGroove one. Also, this Kinivo doesn't look too bad.

It's a bit more expensive than those options and doesn't work with every vehicle but I just put a grom audio adapter in my honda pilot. It pretends to be a cd changer, I got the box with aux in, usb and bluetooth capability then added on the Bluetooth module and auxillary in+charging cable and it ended up being like 200 shipped. At the cheapest end you could get the box that just does bluetooth and aux for 74.99 then add on the bluetooth for 49.99 (the box comes with bluetooth capability but the actual bluetooth module is an addon). You mount the microphone where you cant it and plug the box into the back of the radio. It works well for me and everyone can hear me just fine... well everyone except my dad but he's been going deaf for years now.

Can you elaborate? You have this one? It is one of the two I was considering. How is call quality?

i dont own it yet but am probabally going to order it on monday.
my car already has bluetooth built in, but i like the fact this adapter supports aptX, and has a built in USB port.
so anyway, i cant elaborate :/

I can speak for it, I own it (bought it last week)
Syncs up quick, Unlike the similar Belkin (looks better, has issues) the buttons are useful, the big center area is a giant play/pause button, it also has a foward\back button on one side. Call quality is great, have had no complaints when using it, streams music well. Very simple setup.
The only thing I don't like is the cable is permanently attached and very thin/fragile. This isn't an issue if you properly mount/set it up (IE hide it behind plastic panels)
The charger doesn't put out much, I believe around 700mA, and it does take up my one and only 12v jack meaning I can't easily use a better phone charger without hardwiring something.

There's always this.

Just bought a new car 2 months ago. It has no bluetooth and I was tired of my fm adapter so I was looking for a new solution. Considered everything from 600$ full CD player replacements that had bluetooth enabled to some of the more internal installation ones around 150. Ended up going with the Kinvio off Amazon just to try it and see how well it works.
Here is what makes it 10x better then the Belkin: Autoconnect. When you turn your car on it turns on and your phone automatically connects. With the Belkin apparently you have to hit the button every time you want to connect.
I've been told the audio quality is good and while people know im on speakerphone they can hear me clearly. The audio quality for me is great, I'm not an audiophile but it certainly seems clear to me. Would definitely recommend it for the price.

I put a bluefusion unit in my truck and loved it. It plugged in behind the radio, install took about thirty minutes. It still allowed use of my steering wheel controls. It tricked the radio into thinking the Bluetooth was xm..... retails for over $200 but are for sale all over the net for $40-60.

so am i correct in my thinking:
1) pair my phone with the Kinovo
2) Music (from google music) will go out TO my microsoft SYNC system VIA Line OUT FROM the Kinovo
3) Phone calls, incoming/outgoing, will go TO my microsoft SYNC system VIA bluetooth FROM the Kinovo ((instead of LINE out! so i can still take advantage of answering calls from my steering wheel and seeing names on the cars LCD etc ...)

Alright, I'm giving the Kinivo a try.
