USB Connection Issue - T-Mobile LG G2x

The issue I'm having is that I'm not longer able to get the G2X to be recognized by any of my computers via USB, although it does charge without an issue when plugged into said computers. It used to work fine, and my wife's G2X is recognized without issue on the same computers with the same USB wire.
I've tried:
1. Reinstalling the LG driver
2. Performing a factory reset on the device
3. Using various computers, including ones that never had the driver installed.
4. Using various USB wires
5. Toggling the USB debug option
6. Toggling the USB mass storage option
I did not root my device, and therefore I have not put any custom roms on it. It is completely stock.
Before exchanging it where I purchased it last week, is anyone able to offer another troubleshooting suggestion?

Just to update...
I exchanged my phone at Costco (kickass 90 day return policy) for another G2X. Hopefully I got a decent one. The last one had no battery issues, no wifi issues, no reboot issues, and absolutely no screen bleed.

im assuming u rebooted ur computer after installing the drivers? usb debugging on? hmmm but u said ur wifes is fine

I had a problem with my Nexus One as it was installing the drivers under the device name which differed with my replacement. I used a USB Monitoring app to go in and delete the drivers that were attached to the old device. Then when I paired my new N1, it reinstalled the drivers for the new device and worked like a charm.
I don't think it was made to work that way but I guess after all of the drivers I installed (there were a several duplicates) that it was just getting hosed up.
Are you using a custom rom? I know some roms don't require drivers while others do (some some roms flip flop). CM7 requires drivers now but I don't think CWM Recovery does. I was able to mount my SD card before without the drivers installed. This may have changed with the latest CWM though.

I was not using a custom rom, and it wasn't being recognized on multiple computers, including ones that never had the phone (or any phone) plugged into it at all.
Exchanged my phone, hooked it up to those same computers, and they all recognize it without issue. There was definitely something wrong with the phone. Whether it was software or hardware is not something I was able to find out.

so your new phone is good now? thats cool good to hear

Sounds like PC to me, happens reboot PC and phone if it does not help I would suggest plugging it into another computer. If it works then try your computer again. This happened to me before with an external hard drive. Hope you get it worked out.
This also happened to me, it was working properly before but it just stopped. It seems that the phone always detects that there is a USB connected even if there was none, evidence is it is always in the charging state when I check the battery status. I think this is a hardware problem. I'm still looking for a solution for this.

USB issues like this will never make sense to me. It's working fine and then not, back and forth. I too am looking for a resolution.

I've never UNCHECKED USB Debugging.... during Odin connections or transferring files between phone and computer. As soon as I plug USB into phone, the USB symbol appears in notification bar and then I press notification to transfer files between computer and phone. My SR internal and external storage are recognized as drive letters on the PC. Try leaving USB Debugging checked and see if that works for you.

I had this problem using my front USB port on my computer.
When I switched to the rear USB port, it worked fine.
Well... it kills my DVI KVM every time. But the PHONE works.

i highly believe this is a hardware problem because mine started when the phone overheat and turned itself off. I already tried resetting to factory setting but still the problem persisted.

good point there have been instances where I have had to switch ports to get it to work.
I remember also having the same problem with a USB cable I used with my captivate. This cable worked well with the captivate but when I plugged my Sky, I had the same problem as you. It took me a while to figure it out and change the cable.
Hope it help

Thank you.
Hey guys. I recently came across the same problem as the OP.
My phone will not detect that it is connected to a computer, and the computer will say that the device is not detected/has malfunctioned.
I have tried a factory reset, I have tried USB debugging, checking and unchecking, I have tried going into USB Storage and hitting the connect to PC button.
The phone does not connect using any of the 6 USB ports. It does not connect to my home or work computer. I have used two different cables, the stock and a third party one. (I have always used stock, never any third party until now to resolve this issue.)
This problem also came out of the blue, no changes were made. The phone is stock no rooting or flashing. Although that was the plan, but now it seems pointless.
Judging from the responses on many websites, I would have to say it's a software issue that can't be resolved. Or maybe a hardware issue. Either way I'm sending it into Rogers (Canadian carrier it originated from) tomorrow if I can't fix it by tonight.
I would love help from the outside public, but please respond with suggestions that are more intricate than to hit the connect to PC button, as I have exhausted all of those options already.
If this is a random occurrence, (and it seems like a common problem from all the results I get when searching for answers) then this phone model really needs to have a fix or something down the road soon, because this is ridiculous.
EDIT: Also tried reboot of the PC. It's Windows 7 64-bit so shouldn't need drivers either, and it was working fine last week.
If u did all that, u did ur due diligence in troubleshooting the problem. I almost guarantee ur mini-usb is dead, or maybe damaged so that it still allows charge but won't connect to computer. Send it in to Rogers, they should give u a temp phone in the mean time becuz its under warrantt
Yeah I figured something hardware related decided to crap out on me.
Is there a specific cause for this to happen? I plan on rooting and flashing different roms when I get the phone back, and don't want to have this happen again out of warranty, or else I'm screwed.
I try to take good care of my phone, so it's weird that this happened. If it is a common problem, then I guess I'd have to be careful to not do anything on my phone that's not reversible.

Replacing the usb port on some devices arent solving the issue.
For example, i have a usb bricked GT-N7000 and technician said that usb port is working on another device but there is something blocking usb mounting in the emmc. I dont have a bricked emmc, but the thing is i have been searching all over to find a fix for this thing more than a year now.

[Q] USB Connection on/off every 2 seconds

I am trying to connect via USB to my PC, not having much luck. I've tried several micro USB cables, and tried plugging them into every USB port on my PC.
When I plug in, and view "Devices and Printers" in Windows 7 32-bit, I can see a total of 6 LG devices show up:
LG Android Phone
LGE p999DW USB Device
LG Android (modem)
LG Android (NMEA)
LG Android (Serial)
Android Sooner Single ADB Interface
But literally every second some of them fall off the list and some reappear, sometimes they are all present for 1 second, sometimes none of them are present, and every combination in between.
I have no ideas left here. Uninstalled the LG driver from control panel, and reinstalled. Tried brushing out the USB port on the phone, as well as the old NES 8-bit blow method, no luck. Lots of cables tried all of which have worked in the past, no luck. Anyone have any thoughts?
Put the phone in apx mode by taking out the battery, holding vol +/-, plugging in the phone and waiting until the driver is ready.
Apx mode won't reconnect if dropped. .. I would guess a bad USB connector if the problem exists.
Also if the PC is overclocked turn that off. It messes with USB.

sound like a connection problem, either with the cable or your physical port on the computer
So it's connecting fine in APX mode, it stays connected in Devices & Printers. But I can't run the LG Mobile Support Tool from there, I've got to boot into Android. As soon as I boot into Android and connect USB, it's dropping the various device profiles in and out of Devices & Printers ever second.
Does it seems odd that I get a good solid connection in APX mode, but not when connecting with Android booted? Seems if the problem was with the USB connector on the phone, it would be an issue all the time.
Any other suggestions? I've tried going back to stock recovery and stock ROM, same issue. I'm really just trying to get the baseband update.

So you can safely say that the connector is good and cable its good. This suggests a software problem... either in Android or PC.
You can try the cleanup batch tool but I doubt it would solve the issue. Does not hurt to try though.

Are all of your Lg Drivers up to date?
No luck there either. Seems like a hardware problem, but it works fine in APX, only cutting in and out once Android boots.
I've been having the exact same issue.

Great, we've got strength in numbers!
So I've tried everything. I've flashed to stock recovery and OS, uninstalled the LG driver and reinstalled, multiple USB cables, different machines, USB debugging on/off, and every combination of things I can think of.
Sucks if if it's a hardware issue. Out of warranty period and I don't want to pay $130 or whatever the insurance deductible is for something so small... but I can't get 2.3.4 loaded without getting USB connected.
I'd be sure it's a USB connection problem, if I didn't get a smooth steady connection in APX mode. I've used NVFlash several times without issue.
Yeah I've only noticed it since i got the 2.3.4 update.
I've tried all my usb ports, and it will pop-up.
Last night i finally got it to let me decide to turn usb mass storage on but when I opened my computer nothing was showing up.
Just got a replacement g2x today after a long battle with my old one's usb port. When i was troubleshooting, I found that vmware and blackberry drivers can cause conflicts.
Try plugging in the phone and removing the drivers for all the LG devices you see in device manager.
btw... brand new replacement phone, if i move it the slightest bit while connected windows will play the disconnect/reconnect sound. I think LH just screwed up in the port design...
There's a funky greenish sticker around the usb port on this new one. Not sure what thats all about... cant tell if this is a refurb either.
Finally got mine to stop. I did a system restore on my laptop and it was good
@captmorganz the green sticker was on both my originals, and to check for the refurbished or not there is a code on the back under the battery by the screws that shows p999dw for original and something close but another letter at the end for refurbished, can't think right now since I've been at work for about 15 hours doing nothing and drinking coffee for the past 5 haha, excuse the rant.

already, already, already and not :/
with another PC if it is recognized but I have no access to another for now
Oddly enough I just acquired a Samsung Infuse 4G this morning, and I've gone through 4 USB cables (that work perfectly with a number of other devices, all tested one by one this morning just to prove it to myself), I've gone through dozens of USB ports across 4 computers (3 laptops and 1 desktop), and no matter what I try to do and how many times I install/uninstall/reinstall either Kies/Kies mini/the USB drivers all by themselves, I cannot get any response from Windows (or even Linux) with respect to this Infuse and I gotta say I'm a bit peeved about it (not at anyone here, or Samsung, but at the person that sold it to me - my fault there for not checking it out completely).
It'll charge fine off the microUSB port, it'll even recognize that it's been plugged into a computer and ask what mode would I like (Kies firmware upgrade, Media, USB storage) and regardless of what I do in any respect, still nothing. Windows never recognizes it at all - there's no error message about not being able to use a device, it just doesn't "see" it ever no matter what's attempted - the classic "ba-donk" sound when attaching a USB device is never heard from any computer I've plugged this phone into, nor detached it from.
What pisses me off the most is the device is at pure factory stock condition, running Froyo 2.2.1 and I can't get it to update over the air to Gingerbread 2.3.6 in any respect - it'll connect with the AT&T servers but then it says "Your device is up to date" which obviously is not correct.
So I'm stuck with a device that's not allowing me to get it off the most basic stock build - if I could just get it to Android 2.3.6 I'd be much happier with it but, I don't see it happening and I have no idea how to proceed.
Don't want to try and dump it off on someone else now even though that would be pretty easy to do off craigslist, probably get $125 for it in no time flat.
Any suggestions as to how I can make it somewhat useful past that dreaded Froyo 2.2.1 would be greatly appreciated.
It's pure stock, not rooted, but it is unlocked as it works with a T-Mobile SIM installed when I tried it. Guess there's just no potential way to force it to update to 2.3.6... dagnabbit.
EDIT:
And no, download mode, recovery, nothing works outside of the OS either, the phone goes into Download mode obviously without issues but attaching the USB cable does nothing, it's just not visible to the computer in any respect. Seems a bit odd but whatever, guess it's just dead for USB data transfer at this point.

Did you ever find a solution for rooting your Infuse? I'm having the EXACT same issues with mine and would love to root it and move on.
I had the issue had to take it out of debug mode to get it to recognize even then only heimdall would recognize it in download mode

[Q] Got a used sprint arrive, but USB port appears to be broken. Any options?

Hello all, I recently purchased a used htc arrive on craigslist but turns out I got scammed because the USB Port appears to be broken. Before I bought it, I checked that the ESN was clean and the phone turned on and it appeared to work, but since then I've tried plugging the phone with multiple USB cables into four different PCs, a few Macs, and even though the phone will charge, the computers just don't recognize it as a phone (in windows device manager, it is an unknown device called HTC). I've installed and uninstalled and reinstalled the Zune software on PC, and the Windows Phone 7 connector software for Mac. So it looks like I've been scammed with a broken phone.
The unfortunate thing is that it's still on Windows Phone 7.0 and hasn't been updated. It looks like Windows Phone must be plugged into a computer to do a hardware update, and it also looks like I can't even download any older apps because it tells me I have to update the system to download apps.
Does anyone know of any workaround to get the phone updated without connecting it to a computer? Or some way to fix the USB port? Or will i just have to buy another phone / be stuck with WP7 without any apps?
Thanks for any ideas,
Andy

I had this issue with an HTC Trophy I bought. The first thing you can try is taking a toothpick or a needle of some kind and seeing if the port is jammed with pocket lint. If it isn't, your probably SOL. If you know someone with the skill, they can probably transplant a new USB port in, but you'll need to get a parts phone to get the USB port out of. :/ Is the phone taking a charge at all? If it is taking a charge but won't allow you to connect it to a computer... try this:

Just to take a quote from my guide on installing HSPL on SparkW (HTC Trophy).
If the phone isn't taking a charge either.. I'd say your in the same boat I was with that 2nd Trophy of mine. I bought a 3rd HTC Trophy with a cracked digitizer, and transplanted the entire LCD/digitizer assembly from my 2nd phone into it just to avoid the tiny ass soldering job that would be required to fix it.
Having taken apart my HTC Pro 7 on Alltel (its the same phone as the Arrive), I'd say the job is similar in skill requirements. :/ Only thing is, an entire LCD/digitizer transplant is actually slightly easier to do on the Arrive/Pro 7 then it is on a Trophy.

You might have tried this already, but I want to ask anyways just in case: Since you bought it used, did it come with the official USB data cable, or are you using your own? Not just any cable with work. It has to be a Micro-USB Data+Power cable. It has to be thick enough to send enough data and power through the cable. The symptoms you describe usually do happen when people try to use normal power USB cables. So, it might not be the port, but the cable. Other than that, I can't think of anything else. Good luck!

Actually it did not come with the original USB data cable, but I have a bunch of cables for previous smartphones. The cables (from a Nexus One and a Optimus S) both work with their respective phones and deliver both power and cable, but with the Arrive, only shows data. Is it possible that a power cable USB cable would deliver data to two other phones but not the Arrive?

Thanks for the advice. I've been thinking about replacing the USB port. There doesn't appear to be any dust or anything; I get power but no data. I actually took the phone apart using a guide on this forum. Taking it apart really wasn't that hard, at least the amount that I took apart, but the USB port is soldered on really tiny and I'm not sure i'd be able to desolder / resolder a new piece all that easily. If anyone's done that before, please let me know. The other option would be to get a phone with cracked screen/etc, and replace it with the nice screen on mine. But all that work might not be worth simply getting a phone that's just working for a bit more cash.

Yeah, I had the same fears when I saw my USB port on my 2nd Trophy ( I can solder but that tiny...). I just won an auction for a US Cellular Pro 7, that is having charging issues, but I'll probably just swap the entire LCD assembly to my Alltel Pro 7 if the port doesn't have an easy to fix.
So, you can get data but the phone won't charge? That's really strange. If you can get data though, you should be able to flash it. When I was using my 2nd Trophy for development, it wasn't charging well, and I'd "borrow" another battery pack from a different phone to keep it charge and flash it, but the USB port basically gave up on life after a long time and I had to stop using it.
Also remember, if you where planning on a custom rom, you DO NOT want to update the phone if it still has a 1.xxx series bootloader! The only method I found that worked to downgrade the bootloader was using a GoldCard setup (thankfully, I had built one about six months ago).
No, I can charge but can't get any data. I think I've decided against soldering the USB port... especially because maybe it's not even the port, but a logic board problem. Anyway, I'm probably going to do as you did, pick up a used "broken" phone with a cracked screen or whatever, and just swap components over, since the phone I have is otherwise in really pristine condition. Or maybe I'll just purchase a working one to avoid all the trouble. I was at first hoping there was some hack to update the phone some other way (bluetooth / wifi / swapping microUSB cards), but it just doesn't seem possible. Microsoft made wp7 pretty difficult to hack around with compared to Android...
Are the custom Roms worth it? I saw the htc arrive hacking forum here on xdadevelopers, but i couldn't quite figure out what the main benefits are... (as you might guess, I am a WP newbie / recovering android user...)

WP8 will bring OTA updates to the table, so for now, Zune is it for updating on WP7's. I find it really odd you can charge it but not get data. Have you tried a factory reset? What does Zune do when you plug it in? Do you get any "unknown" devices listed in device manager, if so, what devices? When you put the phone in bootloader mode (power off phone, old down button and press power.. tri-color screen will appear), will it switch from Serial to USB [btw, in bootloader mode, it is normal for the phone not to charge.]?
I will note (only because of my recent experience) that the bootloader driver will not download from Windows Update for x64 systems (prob not for 32-bit either, but unsure). Your options to install that are to install Android Sync (or pull the drivers out from it), or use a moded inf for older HTC Android phones. I moded an x64-bit driver that should work.. at least on Trophy and Arrive/Pro 7 (CDMA), perhaps others with the same hardware ID.
This driver is only used for diagnostic mode. Zune driver is completely different and should install on a system even without Zune installed (in Windows 7 anyway). It is possible that if the diag driver works, but the Zune driver doesn't, that some weirdness has gone on from an unlocked rom + ansar's USB tethering app that will prevent your phone from connecting to Zune. Only way I've found to fix that weirdness is to flash a custrom ansar rom and run his USB tethering app, and tap "Zune mode"... but normally the phone wouldn't charge at all if this was the problem. ;
Anyway.. check device manager and see if anything is popping up.. even an unrecognized device.
*edit* The driver will prompt you that it is unsigned. That is because I modified the older HTC Diag driver from my HTC Eris [that's easier then me redownloading a useless Android app I'll never use again!] I take no resposability blah blah blah for anything this driver does (It should be fine though )
Thanks. I followed your instructions best as I can (I am a newb to WP).. Some interesting results.
I've tried factory resetting it. A few times, both via hardware (pressing volume button with power or something) and via the software. Neither helped. I've installed and uninstalled Zune a bunch of times. It doesn't load up when I plug the device in. (when i plug the device into USB, it makes the sound that it gets power and starts charging; i get the same sound when I plug it into a wall) If I open the Zune application, it will say device not connected no matter if the phone is connected or not. I get one "unknown" device listed, called HTC. When I try to force it to install device drivers, it can't find any. I tried to point it to the Zune/drivers folder, but it says it can't find drivers for the device. When i load to bootloader, it does switch from Serial to USB.
OK, so then I installed your diagnostic device driver. I had the phone in bootloader and plugged it in; at this point, the computer installed device drivers for a Quallcomm MSM/CDMA device. Then for a brief second, Windows Mobile Device Center loaded up, but it said Device Not Connected. Now when I go into device manager, the phone is listed under HTC modem, as per your device driver. However, when I restart the phone, Zune still doesn't recognize the phone.
So it's weird because obviously the computer sees something. Just not the right thing....

Okay, the good news is that you can flash roms if you want. Bootloader uses a different driver from Zune/normal mode. So the Zune driver isn't installing (which means your PC is the problem, not the phone).
There are a few options you can try, but the easy one is... make sure the newest Zune is installed, then when you try to manually install the driver for the missing "HTC" device, point the driver installation to windows/inf to see if that fixes it (I had a weird issue with Windows 7 32-bit once where the only way I can install even basic drivers was to point it to windows/inf lol. If not, I'll use a driver pulling program and pull the Zune driver for you and post it here.
The Zune driver is definitely installed; last night I picked up another Arrive (I am heading out of town tomorrow so I really wanted something with a good maps app) and it works fine with the same computer/same cable. So at least I've got a working one now; would still like to get the other one working, though...
So I went into the Settings/About of each phone to compare some of the info, in case it helps:
Working Phone:
OS version: 7.10.7720.68
Firmware revision number: 2305.13.40301.651
Hardware revision number: 0002
Bootloader version: 4.3.230513.1(130787)
Non-working phone:
OS version: 7.0.7403.0
Firmware revision number: 2305.06.12501.651
Hardware revision number: 0002
Bootloader version: 1.25.230506.1(118490)

Well, like you said, I was indeed able to flash a rom. I put in a new the Sianto 7.8 one and it loads up just fine. However, when I plug in cord, Zune still doesn't recognize it. So bizarre. But better than before!

Okay, what I want you to try next is this: Install ansar's USB tethering and select "Zune mode" and see if that makes it work with Zune. If you played around with this app before and switched it to diag mode, that can permanently make it stuck in daig mode, causing something similar to this. Even if you haven't messed with ansar's USB tethering in the past, try it anyway and see if it helps (you can download it via Bazaar too if that's easier then pushing the xap).
I'll try this when I get back in town next week. THanks for your help, TheXev.

Success!!!! Zune/Windows recognizes my phone once again. I guess the previous owner was screwing around and got it stuck in the other mode. I am very grateful for all your help, Xev. Now I have two devices; perhaps I should sell one. Also I saw that you are preparing your own ROM? I look forward to trying it out..

Exynos s10e not recognized by computers

About a month ago I started getting the Moisture in USB port error all of the time. I promise, it wasn't wet. It persisted through 2 firmware updates and much time in hot, no humidity environments. Not the biggest problem in the word, because I anyway always just use wireless charging as default. But it did kind of freak me out none the less, and I wanted to backup all of my data and do a factory reset to see if this helped anything before trying to deal with warranty support for a possible broken USB port.
Eventually the port began thinking it was dry again, and I hooked it up to two different windows 10 computers, one windows 7 computer, and my Linux computer (which i have use many times in the past to transfer files with no problems). I reaaalllly don't think it's a driver issue, I promise this isn't a cable or computer USB port issue.
When I plug it in, the phone just starts charging, the computer acts as if nothing happened. the "adb devices" command yields no results. USB debugging is on.
I went into dev settings and made sure it was set to MTP by default. It was. I anyway tried all the same settings, with no luck.
Nothing changed on my computer, yet it no longer recognizes my phone, which is also unrecognized by any computer I try. The USB port works fine for charging now, and I have tried many cables.
Any ideas? Whenever I try to search about this all i get pretty much is "dId YoU tRy ReStArTiNg It???"
I really wanted to back up all my stuff and flash Lineage :/
In doing research about previous models of Galaxy having this same issue, it seems to largely be a software problem. I would like to try going into recovery and wiping some caches....which are safe to wipe without risking any meaningful data loss?
