Sounds like PC to me, happens reboot PC and phone if it does not help I would suggest plugging it into another computer. If it works then try your computer again. This happened to me before with an external hard drive. Hope you get it worked out.
This also happened to me, it was working properly before but it just stopped. It seems that the phone always detects that there is a USB connected even if there was none, evidence is it is always in the charging state when I check the battery status. I think this is a hardware problem. I'm still looking for a solution for this.

USB issues like this will never make sense to me. It's working fine and then not, back and forth. I too am looking for a resolution.

I've never UNCHECKED USB Debugging.... during Odin connections or transferring files between phone and computer. As soon as I plug USB into phone, the USB symbol appears in notification bar and then I press notification to transfer files between computer and phone. My SR internal and external storage are recognized as drive letters on the PC. Try leaving USB Debugging checked and see if that works for you.

I had this problem using my front USB port on my computer.
When I switched to the rear USB port, it worked fine.
Well... it kills my DVI KVM every time. But the PHONE works.

i highly believe this is a hardware problem because mine started when the phone overheat and turned itself off. I already tried resetting to factory setting but still the problem persisted.

good point there have been instances where I have had to switch ports to get it to work.
I remember also having the same problem with a USB cable I used with my captivate. This cable worked well with the captivate but when I plugged my Sky, I had the same problem as you. It took me a while to figure it out and change the cable.
Hope it help

Thank you.
Hey guys. I recently came across the same problem as the OP.
My phone will not detect that it is connected to a computer, and the computer will say that the device is not detected/has malfunctioned.
I have tried a factory reset, I have tried USB debugging, checking and unchecking, I have tried going into USB Storage and hitting the connect to PC button.
The phone does not connect using any of the 6 USB ports. It does not connect to my home or work computer. I have used two different cables, the stock and a third party one. (I have always used stock, never any third party until now to resolve this issue.)
This problem also came out of the blue, no changes were made. The phone is stock no rooting or flashing. Although that was the plan, but now it seems pointless.
Judging from the responses on many websites, I would have to say it's a software issue that can't be resolved. Or maybe a hardware issue. Either way I'm sending it into Rogers (Canadian carrier it originated from) tomorrow if I can't fix it by tonight.
I would love help from the outside public, but please respond with suggestions that are more intricate than to hit the connect to PC button, as I have exhausted all of those options already.
If this is a random occurrence, (and it seems like a common problem from all the results I get when searching for answers) then this phone model really needs to have a fix or something down the road soon, because this is ridiculous.
EDIT: Also tried reboot of the PC. It's Windows 7 64-bit so shouldn't need drivers either, and it was working fine last week.
If u did all that, u did ur due diligence in troubleshooting the problem. I almost guarantee ur mini-usb is dead, or maybe damaged so that it still allows charge but won't connect to computer. Send it in to Rogers, they should give u a temp phone in the mean time becuz its under warrantt
Yeah I figured something hardware related decided to crap out on me.
Is there a specific cause for this to happen? I plan on rooting and flashing different roms when I get the phone back, and don't want to have this happen again out of warranty, or else I'm screwed.
I try to take good care of my phone, so it's weird that this happened. If it is a common problem, then I guess I'd have to be careful to not do anything on my phone that's not reversible.

Replacing the usb port on some devices arent solving the issue.
For example, i have a usb bricked GT-N7000 and technician said that usb port is working on another device but there is something blocking usb mounting in the emmc. I dont have a bricked emmc, but the thing is i have been searching all over to find a fix for this thing more than a year now.

Okay, to make it short, I've brought home a Samsung Infuse for testing. It's not even a day yet and it's showing one hell of a problem already. Firstly, I can't install the right drivers for it. I've used Kies and tried downloading every drivers I can find but no, the phone won't even connect as mass storage. I tried going into download mode by holding the volume keys and insert the usb cable but it only gets in download mode once every 20 tries or so, the other times it just boots right into the OS. In the rare cases of successful download mode, Odin won't recognize the phone. I used SGH-i997-UCKJ4-One-Click and finally it said the phone is connected, but intructed me to install the right drivers. So I did exactly as it said but the whole process of reinstalling drivers just repeats. I put the cm7 and mosaic ROMs in the phone using wifi and flashed them, here I met another problem, the phone keeps getting into car mode. I disabled it, and the phone changed orientation although I tried disabling it back and forth. I'm raging at it here, does anybody know about these problems or should I throw the infuse at the seller's face?

sounds like an issue with the usb port not the drivers.
try cleaning it, or you may need to send it to samsung for repair. if you dont want to do that then i'd make you an offer on it, but you might be insulted at what id pay for a "broken" device.
Something I ran in to as well, I ended up using the ports on the back of my PC.
Something else too ... I ended up using a Blackberry USB cable.
Hope this helps

Yea not an issue with infuse but the USB port. My laptop connects to it if I use the secondary or tertiary USB ports.

people read the whole post. his issue is not limited to computer connectivity. the phone goes into car mode on its own. car mode is triggered by a simple resistor in the car dock. different resistor values will put the phone in the different dock modes, Adam outler had a bunch on information on USB standards when he made his own captivate car mount. what is going on is most likely that a piece of semi conducive material is trapped in USB port on the phone or the port is otherwise damaged on the phone. there could also be some physical issue or calibration issue with the chip that controls the USB. I have seen similar issues on my own phone and seen atleast one post with issues identical to mine.
the seller sold it for a reason.
i just got this and was trying to root it. but when i plug it into the pot {or any port for that matter} i just charges. nothing more. ive installed the drivers, turned on usb debuging, and tried to use mass storage. nothing. please help i really want to root this
well first welcome to the G2x forums. you have alot of reading to do.
make sure you read EVERYTHING before you start ANYTHING. sometimes a few passes over a post really helps.
you say your trying to get root, well there is a guide in the general section stickied up top to show you just how to do this. i linked to it Here for you.
Im not sure if you've owned and Rooted other android devices, but the G2X is a little different than most. just read that ENTIRE post start to finish and then follow all of the steps. if all you want is to be rooted on the stock rom, then you can stop at step 3. otherwise follow all the way through.
have fun and hope it works for ya.
NA. I got the rooting down. But my laptop wont even pick up that I've hooked up my g2x. It just charges.

1) you cant root like that, so stop trying.
2) if you are trying to get root, just follow the link i posted above and you will have it in no time
3) if you properly installed the drivers for USB Mass-Storage, it should show up on your computer just like any other USB Drive, try These (i searched Google and picked the first thing) and see if it works.
4) if you are trying to use ADB or another debugging tool, make sure USB-Debugging is checked in your settings.
5)if none of this works, its a hardware issue with either your computer or your phone.
im trying to help, but every time i ask you a question, you seem to ignore it and just re-state your first post. you said you have rooting down, but you obviously dont, you are trying to get root, but it seems as if you wont even read my entire posts.
so this is most likely the last post im going to make in this thread, hope it works out for you.
Just to say, I'm assuming he is aware just plugging the phone into the computer won't root it. It sounds to me like he was saying, he was planning on rooting the phone so he did the steps to get it connected to the computer but it is just charging and not showing up anywhere so he is unable to proceed to the actual rooting steps.
If you're on Windows 7 maybe try XP my phone had issues connecting to Windows 7 even though I see many people that have done it perfectly fine. I had to get the screen replaced when I dropped my phone and since then it hasn't been registering to my computer only charging so as Klathmon already suggested in my similar thread about this, the USB port on the phone itself is damaged so Wednesday I'm getting a replacement -_- good luck with your issue.

Could it possibly be your micro USB cable? I know some of them only support charging and not data transfer. Maybe try another computer if it isn't the cable. Are you rooting it with SuperOneClick? just curious
I had two bad Galaxy Nexus' with a confirmed defective USB port. Bear in Mind with both phones I did not root them. The first one came rooted (Check out NewEggs reviews about this "The Box was Open" issue) and the second one did not.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1589628
So I returned it (the second one that exhibited this) for refund to NewEgg and ordered one directly from Google Play
On the GNex forums they kept telling me to check if Fast-Charge was enabled. I tried different cables, Different batteries, with or without SIM. Enabling/Disabling fast-charge, Switching between PTP and MTP, well over 100 different computers (I work in IT and have a literal TON (over two thousand pounds) of computers to work with) and USB cables. I personally came to the conclusion that the part of the port that transfers data to an external part is fried. It saddens me to say that your port may be fried on your G2x.
By the way, the G2x absolutely demolishes the GNex in respect to performance, but the GNex's stability makes me very very happy.
Fixed!
After months of searching the net for a solution, my issue was resolved by replacing the usb flex cable in the phone. I can't tell you how elated I was then I first hooked it up.
Hi there, just wanted to check if anyone had similar issues. When I connect my Sensation XE via the USB to my laptop, the touch screen acts strangely in that when trying to tap something on screen its as if the screen is misaligned and it selects a different area of the screen. For example when trying to click on the button to turn on the usb storage function, the drop down notification bar is selected, even the home, menu, back buttons are affected and its difficult to do anything. I've experienced this when on the stock unrooted ROM and s-offed, rooted V. Inquisition ROM. I suspect its the usb ports on my laptop as it takes ages to transfer file across usb so hopefully it isnt a phone fault. Need to test on a different PC/laptop.
Try installing htc sync on your pc, it should give you the proper drivers and you will see if your computer is really the problem.

Think I had installed htc sync and uninstalled it, as part of the process of making sure the drivers were on there for rooting/s-off procedures, but I'll reinstall again to see if that helps, thanks.
it's an hTC sensation well known screen issue. specific devices have it, including me. this has no relation to drivers or what not. just a fault made by hTC engineers.
I have described issues when using my aftermarket charger. I think I read somewhere some chargers have faulty grounding.
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA
I think my laptop may be to blame, the screen isn't laggy or unresponsive, but more like it is uncalibrated or misaligned. The issue only occurs when the phone is connected via USB cable. I have another USB cable attached to my pc in work for charging and the issue doesn't happen, I'm going to try it on another machine to see if the problem occurs.
My laptop is a bit dodgy so is suspect, the battery was faulty and stopped working, so had to remove it and run it from mains only, not sure if this would have any impact on earthing or not? The usb ports also run very slow when transferring large files, they are USB 2.0 but are as slow as 1.0, so I suspect this is a laptop issue and not phone, which isn't so bad.
My PC works great and I also have the crazy screen when connected to it through USB.
I don't think that relates to the problem. There's a thread here that talks about the screen issues and this one has already been discussed to be a fault in the handsets.
Although, I must say that sometimes it happens, and sometimes it doesn't. Kinda depends on the battery level...

Thanks for your reply, it does just seem to be quite random then.
this is the 3rd bricked g2x i've had and the others worked great. this one however isn't as easy.
here is what the phone does:
-power and volume down lets me in to cwm. i cleared and reset everything and tried to load a rom via sd but it keeps saying no files found.
-just power takes me to white lg then to blue lg and nothing else
-no battery and both volume buttons held, plugged into computer yields nothing.
i've tried numerous computers/drivers, as well as cables to no avail
nm. didn't notice until now that theres a small piece missing on the phone where the usb plugs in. wasn't making a good connection.
alls well now :good:
well the phone is having the same problem. it charges via usb to my computer but it doesn't come up as seeing it?
i know drivers are installed because it sees my g2x. and i know its not the cable cause again, it sees my phone with the same cable

Hi
I recently bought a Desire S from a friend. I went about rooting it but when I plugged it into my PC it is not recognised at all, literally nothing pops up on the phone or the PC.
I've checked the settings in the phone and USB debugging is enabled and I always changed default connection type.
I have even booted into Hboot and plugged the USB in, but still nothing.
The phone charges perfectly fine and I've tried plenty of different cables. My other Android phone works perfectly when plugged it.
I'm starting to think its a hardware issue, anyone else heard of this? common problem? any fixes?
Thanks
Re install htc sync and drivers, then remove sync and try again
“Pressure is something you feel when you don't know what the hell you're doing.”*―*Peyton Manning
I have the same problem, sort of. When I plug mine in all is well at first, but give the phone one tiny nudge (or just wait a few minutes) and it goes back to charge-only mode. It's probably a slightly loose connection somewhere in the USB port on your phone.
To be sure, try if it works in Linux. The Linux USB stack sucks infinitely less than what Windows uses.
Thanks for the replies. I tried Ubuntu but exactly the same (it worked with my Nexus 4)
Thats a little annoying, thankfully charging still works, just unsure how long that will last for! plus I cant root it! but I dont exactly need it rooted but I tend to do it anyway.
I've sorted it now. It was a loose ribbon cable, plugged that back in after taking the phone apart and its working.
Bootloader unlocked and custom recovery flashed. Ready to rock.
