Any compact phone with WP7? - Windows Phone 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does anyone know if some compact WP7 phones have been announced or are coming? An HD7 Mini like HTC did with the HD2 and HD Mini, for example? Thanks!

How about HTC Trophy? Only 3.8" of screen.

Acer W4 with 3,6" screen though it's not available yet: http: / / wmpoweruser . com/acer-w4-windows-phone-specs-detailed/ (delete 'spaces')

Isn't the point of an advanced OS like WP7 to have a rich visual experience. A small screen kind of defeates the purpose. Why don't you try WM6.5 instead. It is a cool OS, and great for small screens.

I got an HD Mini already
3.6 is not a bad size, but I was thinking about not more than 3.5. It's just a curiosoity since I'm extremely happy with my Mini, but I'm falling in love with WP7 and all the available devices are too big compared

Size is mostly personal preference. But right now, 4.3" seems to be what everyone is loving. So majority of new phones out there are towards this size. I liked Samsung's 4" screen size. Perfect comprise between size and usability.

Yeah I know the trend is to make them bigger and bigger and I'm in the minority group who thinks 4" is more like a tablet but since they did it with the HD2/Mini, I was hoping they would do it with the HD7 again...
Anyway, we'll see how they evolve, I'm planing to stick to my Mini for a long time

Minority means low demand and low sales. No one really wants to release a phone that can't make money on. I think given time, the trend will move back to smaller size. Last year, most Samsung smart phones are 4" screen. This year, all 4.3" and 4.5" screens, no more 4" screens.
The 4" screen Samsung phones are actually no bigger than iPhone 4. They are ok size wise.

Try the HTC 7 Mozart with its 3.7" screen. it's very nice to hold. I went for the HD7 in the end.

HTC Arrive is out with a 3.6

Thanks for the replies guys, seems like HTC has not forgotten to keep making more compact phones then

Large screens ftw

The LG Quantum has a 3.5" screen but with the slideout qwerty its a little thicker...
As for big screens, my HD2 owned... Especially with WP7 flashed on it, but I got sick of always having to use 2 hands... I missed simple single handed phone operation...

HTC Obsession: Upgraded HD2

Rumor is around that HTC are prepping for an upgrade to HD2 with WinMo 7 .. http://wmpoweruser.com/?p=12268
I like amoled screen after seeing the Nexus One vs the HD2's but I would prefer it being the size of the HD2's. The screen on a phone that size is a gigantic plus of the HD2. I also like the 4gb internal memory and micro sd card feature.
Good looking phone. My hope is the HD2 can be upgraded to WM7 so I can have a honest choice when my wallet catches up to my desires.
The phone mentioned in that story is reported to have a 3.7" screen.
Since the HD2's biggest statement is its screen size, I would not call anything an upgraded HD2 if it has anything less than a 4.3" screen.

Anything less than 4.3 would be a downgrade!
I think a 3.7" display would be fine..I love my HD2, but if it was a touch smaller, I wouldn't grumble either!!
Yeah, not just because screen it´s not bigger you can´t call it an upgrade.
Personally I prefer a screen of 3.7"
They're releasing an HTC HD2 with a smaler screen but AMOLED and better drivers.
Wow.
Amazing like a broken PC... lol.
IMHO this isn't a better device only because it has got 512MB RAM.. the HTC HD2's 4.3" screen is simply the better thing never seen. If only it would be AMOLED.........
Anyway, I think that I'll stay with my HTC HD2 for more than a year if they're releasing devices like this as a successor.
The only good thing to have is WM7 on the HD2.

I read somewhere that the screen of HD2 is capable of displaying 16 million colors but is limited to 65K because of WM 6.5. If this is true, we should be able to get 'near Amoled' experience with HD2 running WinMo 7.

Hardly. You won't even get close to OLED black levels on the HD2 screen, nor will you get the kind of smoothness of motion and lack of blur/judder that an OLED display gives you, nor will you get the major battery-life-extending benefits of OLED.
Even if the HD2's display is theoretically capable of >65k colours, it quite possibly still can't do 24-bit colour - most phone LCD displays are only 18-bit.
On the other hand, thus far most OLED screens seem to deliberately over-saturate the colours. My HD2's white point is a bit pushed to blue, but otherwise the colours are quite accurate. OLED sunlight readability is also often poor (although it has to be said the HD2's is pretty bad because the screen is so glossy).
Heh, well, the AMOLED display saturation is somehow superior in some images and it's not good while exposet at sunlight, but the battery life of an AMOLED screen device is really, REALLY SUPERIOR, because AMOLED simply powers down the pixel if it is pure black and it consumes less power because it plays on the voltage/amperage of an AMOLED pixel for "colouring" it.
Anyway, I'm just happy with my HTC HD2 and with his pretty BIG screen.... we can only wait and see if WM7 will use 24bit colors with the HD2's screen!
...I think the battery (1230 mAh) is not enough for this specs.
the obsession is just another device from htc coming after hd2 doesnot mean it is an upgrade to hd2 if it was we would consider td2 as an upgrade to blackstone
and upgrade means huge different in specifications (like between hd1 and hd2 so the 64 mb more ram is not a really upgrade as they have the same processor running at 1gz )
cause its size i think its more diamond3 than hd3... looks like my next phone
this would be my next phone too....but..who knows when we will ever see it....at best it's still 9 months away!!!

you are right it seems to be upgrade for diamond 2
Whatever devices come out next, I`m hoping they will have a TV out (or even HDMI).
It would be great, to have a mobile film player wherever we go ( for the kids of course), but also would not have to remote desktop using a tiny screen.

It's being released awfully late if it's an upgrade to the TD2; the TD2 launched last April, but the Obsession isn't out till October - HTC doesn't usually leave that long between refreshes. And from a 3.2" screen to 3.7" is quite a jump, especially bearing in mind that the TD2 was positioned specifically as a smaller and lighter equivalent of the Touch HD and TP2.
Still, I agree that the consensus does seem to be that it's a Diamond 2 replacement (possibly originally intended to ship earlier but delayed by the late arrival of WM7).
Any news up on this? Waiting for snapdragon WM6.5 phone with no giant screen to replace my Diamond1.
looking at the thread i was just wondering is there anyone who loves small and sharp displays

Xperia X10, HTC Desire Or The Nexus One

Hello,
I'm seriously doubting what phone i should buy, and therefore i want to ask if any of you have some advantages or disadvantages and some things that are just for taste so i can get a good idea of what the advantages and disadvantages are of the phones and just the things people like or hate about it?
My main points are ofcourse The android versions and the speed of the phones and if they are strong devices so if they don't break easily.
Thnx in advance!
The X10 is the weakest of the three handsets you've listed.
It's only a 65k LCD screen and it has no multi-touch.
Obviously, a part of that is due to the version of Android it's running but it's unclear whether any of that will improve when (or indeed, given it's Sony Ericsson we're talking about, if) they get round releasing an upgrade.
Aside from that, as nice as the Timescape app is on the X10, it just doesn't match Sense on the Desire.
The only point the X10 has in it's favour is that it's an 8MP camera but in my first-hand experience it was very, very poor even in good light. SE have said they will be adding HD video recording by way of a software upgrade but that won't be until the end of the year at best (and, once again, this being SE there is a history of taking missing deadlines by months, almost years).
As for the Nexus One, personally I see no advantage ot it over the Desire but, equally, it's not really any worse either, so I suppose it's all down to price where you are.
Whichever one you go for, they're both that bit better than the SE.
It may also be worth considering the Samsung Galaxy S with it's 5MP HD video (but no flash!?!) camera, 1GHz 'Hummingbird' CPU and 4" WVGA superAMOLED screen (basically all the advantages of AMOLED but you can use it in sunlight).
That or the up-coming Motorola XT720 which will offer an 8MP HD recording camera with a proper Xenon flash as well as HDMI-out, along with a decent all-round spec inclduing a 720MHz OMAP 3430 CPU, 512MB of RAM and a 3.7" 480x854 multi-touch LCD screen.

Thnx for your reply!
I will have a look at those phones you mentioned! I currently possess the HTC Touch HD (Hate WinMo) and i find the screen a bit to small but the touchkeys are really nice! So i'm looking for a phone that has quite a large screen like the Evo 4G with Android. I like the X10 because of the larger screen and Android but i'm already rethinking buying that device. Something like the HTC HD2 would be really nice only with android operating on it! Which seems to me would be the Evo 4G but i cannot buy that phone since i live in the netherlands.
Do you know some upcoming devices or devices out now that i might like?
Thnx for your help!
Right, well, the Touch HD has a 3.8" screen so if you want larger than rules out the Desire/Nexus One and the Motorola XT720 as they're all 3.7".
The Samsung I mentioned has a 4" screen, so it'll be a bit bigger than the Touch HD's but you're talking 5mm difference diagonally, which isn't exactly huge. That said, if you were considering the X10 then the Galaxy S is the same size of screen.
Other than that, there's the Dell Streak but it's a 5" screen so it's a whole order of magnitude larger than the likes of the HD2/Evo 4G.
Moving on from phones that are already or about to go on sale, there's the on-going rumours of the Motorola Shadow/Droid Xtreme which is supposed to have a screen between 4.1 and 4.3" but it's very much a rumour and if it's anything like the last Droid, it'll be released in the US first and the rest of the world a fair while later.
And you won't even be able to buy it from the US to get it sooner because it's almost guaranteed that it'll be a CDMA handset on Verizon.
Looking at the handsets that GSMArena lists as running Android and having a screen larger than 4", apart from the ones I've mentioned there's the leaked Dell Thunder which will be a 4.1" but there's no confirmation of when or where it's going on sale; the Samsung 7" tablet which isn't really designed to be a phone at all; and some handset from a brand called 'i-mobile' that I've never even heard of.

perfect screen size

What is your prefered screen size?
In my opinion 3.8 is perfect. I like 3.7 but the problem is that it is not as wide as the 3.5 screens on the garminphone, iphone, huwai ascend, and that's the only thing I don't like about 3.7 screens and the new motorolla cliq too its ridiculously long and thin, I did a side to side comparisom and it is less wider than the 3.7 inch screen on my G2 but a little bit longer. It was a dissappointment the cliq 2 of course why would they make the screen less wide that makes no sense to me anybody else feels like this about 3.7 screens?
The 3.8 on the mytouch 4G is wider than the 3.5 screens we know on the phones I mention and I like that. Btw I think they could've squeezed a 3.8 on the G2 at the size it is, that's one of the things I love about the G2, the size overall is nice.
3.7". I don't really feel like the 3.5" on my iPhone is any wider than the 3.7", but I never measured. I know 3.7" phones themselves are usually the same width as the iPhone.
something between 3.7 minimum to 4.3 max
3.7" is the best size for me (at least from what I tried, it depends on the size of your hand, I don't realy own a touchscreen device currently, tried friends').
The width of the screen is affected by the ratio, there are wide screens, 4:3 screens etc.
Depends on resolution.
4.5" , but 4.3" is minimum , anything else is unmanly and is a toy phone
3.7" is good -- i find much bigger than that ends up being too big for a phone..
4 inches is definitely the minimum; I have tried an iphone but it just isn't the same.
Captivate 2.2.1 Paragon
4-7inch anything under 4inch is unmanly and just a joke

I measured them, the iphone and huwai ascend, screen is 1.94 inch wide, the 3.7 on the G2 is 1.90 wide, also I notice the cliq 2 screen is longer and less wide than the G2 screen being the same size. I prefer wider screen than longer, don't get me wrong I'm good with the 3.7 inch its not that big of a deal
i think the sgs has the right dimensions of a display
I love the 4. 3 maybe bigger.
The EVO you wish you had
4''

I think I would like a 5 inch screen. A little big but, I think it would be good for me.
The EVO you wish you had
I've tried a few, and I think 4 is the best for me. Anything too much bigger starts to get clunky.
Minimum 4. Max 4.5. Depends on the overall design. Extremely thin bezel? Fine, give me 4.5

4.3" in minimum, would love to see some new HTC phones with bigger screen, perhaps in the 5" area.
4" is perfect for me, but i have smallish hands. I'm happy with the 3.7" i currently have though.
What worries me is that all the top end phones are coming out with 4.3" screens now, meaning i'll have no choice but to go bigger in future
Do you guys with bigger screens have any trouble with them fitting in your trouser pockets? Is it comfortable?
I like the 4" screens on the Captivate and stuff, but even a GOOD 3.5" like on the iPhone 4 is a great screen, and likewise, the 4.3" and 4.5" screen are tempting. I do think once you go above 4" it's harder to keep a phone from being a big ugly brick (think Droid X) but I'm looking forward to seeing what Samsung does with the 4.5" Super AMOLED Plus. That promises to be a nice screen - none of the PenTile checker boarding, really thin, Samsung's great at design. Too bad they're so bad at the updates thing...

trust me I doubt most phones would come out 4.3, it seems 3.7-4" its getting to be the rule now most phones launching are withing that range I doubt the new sidekick will be anything bigger than 3.7 lol some sidekick feens are actually I would say dreaming about the sidekick having a 4.3" screen imagine a screen that big flipping how big the phone gonna be lol. And the samsung 4G as we already know is 4". I also think 4 is nice but they have to do it like they did it with the motorolla defy waterproof the phone is incredibly small much smaller than the G2 with a nice 3.7 screen. I think they could've squeezed in a 3.8 in the G2 and could've made it smaller. I mean just look at the garminphone it is ridiculously and unnecesarily huge for a 3.5 screen. Just the front is about 55% screen and 45% buttons.

[Q] HD7 or Mozart or Samsung Focus

Hey guys, I was wondering which among these 3 (HD7, Mozart, and Samsung Focus) should I get?
Right now, I've set my mind into getting an HD7 for its 4.3' screen.
Comments and Suggestions please.
i prefer HD7 and mozart...cause as we know jailbreaking of htc's product is somehow easier than samsung's...(i mean after nodo and mango...)...
i think HD7 is better than mozart...becau its 4.3 inch screen..
Why you dont think about HTC Trophy ?
I found the HD7 had washed out screen compared to other models. Just an opinion.
I myself went for the Mozart because I prefered the smaller size compared to the HD 7. I didn't want my phone to be too bulky/big.
EDIT: Also, I prefered the HTC Design over the Samsung one.

yup. same here. mozart has smaller screen + higher spec camera than hd7.
but if you can wait for a few months, lots of higher spec and models are coming out.
I never regreted getting mozart over hd7 though
it's all about your taste.
Samsung : design.display quality. nice hardware
htc : good for developing and hacking + acceptable prices
excuse for my bad English
hd7: good for developing and hacking and good supporting from the htc and developer like an hd2
Samsung: beautiful and best design and good high quality screen
Mozart : like an hd7 but more beautiful and have better camera
============================================
but i think hd7 is better at all .....................
Thank you, everyone.
I bought an HD7. I liked the big screen and its design (hardware). I really don't know why I find the HTC HD7 fancier than the Samsung Focus and the Mozart. I guess it's really about preference.
I didn't like the plastic hardware of the Samsung Focus. For me, it doesn't seem sturdy. I did consider its wonderful screen display but then again size for me matters more and I believe that the HD7 looks a lot more elegant than the Focus.
And for the Mozart, it's just too small for me.
Feature wise, they all do the same thing.
Focus, it just loads faster and everything just seems clearER (I'm not saying that the other phones are not clear, the screen of Focus is just better than the others)
Mozart, the only edge it has I believe is its 8MP camera. (THAT'S IT!)
HD7, I don't really know what it's edge is. I guess it's about the utility I received for buying it. It's really worth it.

Which of the following devices to follow up my HTC Touch Pro 2 ?

Hi,
I just sold my HTC Touch Pro 2 and considering the following phones:
HTC Sensation 299
HTC Encredible S €303 - €315
HTC Desire S €239
Samsung Galaxy S2 €226 (probably not possible, false price on Ebay)
Sony Xperia Arc 266
Sony Xperia Ray €279
Regulus Android dual sim €215
In which order you would prefer or which phones wouldn't you recommend?
HTC Incredible hands down.
I had the first Droid Incredible and I absolutely loved it.
If this is too pricy for you, the Galaxy S2, the Sensation then the Desire would be good choices also.
I'm not a fan of Sony phones so I can't really help with that, sorry.
I just checked youtube and the Incredible has the best contrast/viewing angle.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-oLz3CT35-4
But on this site 62% voted Sensation (1800 votes) and only 23% voted Incredible (600 votes)
http://www.androidauthority.com/incredible-s-desire-s-sensation-–-which-is-better-12619/
So I guess Incredible has best screen and Sensation best overall ?
Since the Sensation has at least the same specs as the Incredible, plus bigger screen resolution, dualcore CPU (overclocks to at least 1.5GHz), better GPU (Adreno 220 vs 205) and HDMI-out via MHL, I'd take (and I just took) the Sensation. Screen might be a little better on the Incredible but not by so much it would make a big difference.
Galaxy S2 is a great phone too, I just don't trust Samsung that much... Sensation feels expensive when held in hand, S2 is too plasticky. The super AMOLED screen is awesome though, much better than anything HTC can offer at the moment. Also S2 might be slightly faster of the two, since it has more ram and ~30% smaller screen resolution.
All those seem like downgrades... Winmo is a higher quality OS than android and runs better even on inferior hardware. Sure it didn't have an app catalog, but in comparison I'd stick with winmo or upgrade to Microsoft's latest OS. No point in going from poor quality OS to poorer quality OS.
nobody wants a winmo... it's a dead mobile os at the moment.
perhaps with some luck it might pick up steam but it's not looking too good at the moment.
overall(and out of the choices listed) I'd say the Senny.
not saying that because I own one, it's just that it's a overall win.
now having said that if you can get the SGS2 for the price listed then I'd say jump on it.
long as all the plastic doesn't bother you and can live with the lower resolution screen... (hopefully it's the Exynos version though... if it's the Snapdragon, I'd still get the Senny over it)
No it was a fake auction, i'm still doubting between Sensation & Incredible S ...
Isn't the screen too big from the sensation, isn't it more pleasant to have the 4 inch Incredible S in your hand with better contrast/field of view ?
Does the Incredible S has the latest Sense & Android Android 2.3 Gingerbread, same as the Sensation (or tweaked rom here available) ?
Will ICS be available for the Incredible S also like for the Sensation?
Maybe you should go to a store which sells them both and try which one feels better in your hands? Sensation is actually quite sleek, and only marginally bigger than the Incredible S. Sensation's display takes more room with thinner borders, so the phones are quite similar in size. I have big hands so the size is not a problem for me, but I have to admit that proper usage with only one hand isn't possible. Though I suspect the same goes for the I S too...
I wouldn't worry too much about the viewing angles and contrast of the Sensation's display, I'm coming from Desire's AMOLED and am happy with my Sensation. Of course the AMOLED was/is better but both Sensation and Incredible have S-LCD's so the difference can't be massive.
I'm not 100% sure about the Incredible S but I think both phones have a pretty good level of support and new roms in XDA. So choose which one you like more, if your gut tells you to get the Incredible S, go for it, it's a good phone too.
