ROM Therapy - T-Mobile LG G2x

Okay, I admit, I am a little gun shy about flashing a custom ROM... I just came from a G1. I had no fear, I was flashing everything I could get my hands on to find the fastest and least laggy set up I could find. Sometimes things were great, sometimes not so much(all better than stock, i assume)... but there were nights that I was reflashing multiple times just to get it back stable enough to be usable again.
Now I have the G2x and I LOVE it. Mine was so quick and stable right out of the box that I don't want to lose that... I know I could make it quicker and more user friendly. Part of me wants to wait to see what happens when the OTA update comes out... annnnd part of me wants to flash away(I am all rooted and have CWM going and Tweezit's Dark sinister is poised and just a button press away)...
maybe I should start off small and try faux's stock kernel... but the whole undervolt thing is lost on me...
could use a little talking into or out of flashing now...

do it!!!!!! flash fauxs now!!!! u need to flash rite now what are u waiting for click the button now!!!!! lol nah listen bro i kinda felt the same way u did fauxs kernels are top notch really the only ones i wasnt having problems with morfics are awesome to but im pretty sure he does that for better battery life n stability .....good stuff

so did i talk u into it, or out of it???

In to... But stupid questions first... If the kernel doesn't work for me... Is there a way to flash back the crappy stock kernel? And what under voltage settings should I be looking at?
Thanks

question1, thats y u make a backup of stock this way if u dnt like anything u can restore back, n 2 its undervolted across the bored -50 i think u will most def get battery life with the kernel vs stock n like i sd if u dont like it u can restore ur backup ,to backup go into cwm power dwn n vol dwn n scroll down to backup and restore and hit backup

wait assuming u installed cwm with nvflash then do last part

Of course I did...no fake flash for me... So just so I am clear... I did a nandroid back up this morning... If the new kernel doesn't work out for me the back up will get me back? Last question...does the same hold true for ROMS as well? If I flash bionix and I want to go back to stock will my nandroid get me there? THANK YOU FOR YOUR PATIENCE... I should have been a computer science major... I realized waaaay to late that I love this stuff... I am learning as I go...
Sent from my butt using XDA Premium App

lol no prob man n yes if u restore back to ur stock nandroid it will be exactly how it was before u backed it up kernel and all so u can stick fauxs rom on there and his kernel if u dont like it go into recov and erase data and cache and hit restore backup n u r back to stock....and if u want to make a backup of the new rom u put on do that too u will just have two backups the new rom and stock.........have fun flashing

Awesome! The button has been pushed! Somewhere my wife just cried out... She won't know why untill she gets home and I am sitting in front of the computer with a bag of chips ahoy and a mr pib...

Yeah ive been kinda shy too. even though not only did i flash a ton of roms i developed one. but that was on the droid. by the time i started it was pretty clear you just couldnt brick the thing
but im past my 2 weeks so no return now. and this one does seem to work so maybe thius weekend

I say go for it... It took barely any arm twisting from sarni84 for me to jump blindly into the abyss. Faux's kernel is great...

Honestly dude, I'd wait a little bit before starting to flash ROMs on the g2x. Development is fairly new, and everything is still pretty buggy. I've had to do like 3 or 4 battery pulls today alone and it's not very practical for daily use. If you're happy with the stock ROM, do yourself a favor and keep it. Keep up to date on the ROM development, though, and in due time, they'll be more stable and you'll have a better experience. I had my phone rooted and a new ROM flashed within the first hour I bought the phone. I haven't had much time to really enjoy it since I jumped right into custom development. When the bugs start appearing and stop me from using my phone to its maximum capability, I start to question that decision. Just my personal opinion on the matter.

Where were you 8 hours ago? Lol...that's exactly why I have only flashed faux's kernel... So far... I am going to stay in a holding pattern for the time being... best of both worlds...

I held off. The phone is good now but the real stable stuff will come after the gingerbread release.
Themes and battery life aside there is no reason or need to flash a rom yet on this phone.
It is pretty open and you can do most everything you need to out the box.
I'm waiting for gingerbread. If that doesn't suite me I'll wait for the gb roms.
Source roms. Full source. I mean.
And I'd only do it to theme. I do alot with my phone.
I trip out a lot of android users with my phones.
Vets.
And I do it all stock. You just gotta know how, and where, and you can do some amazing things.
And it is like pringles.

Well not to play devils advocate but I've been flashing CM since the first nightly. I haven't loaded any custom kernels aside what comes with CM7.
I have jumped around the board a few times but always landed back to CyanogenMod.
While stock worked well for me, and CM7 is not a stable release, it has provided several fixes and benefits over stock. I've been running the last #34 build and it honestly works pretty good. Their server died, so you'll have to use Fitsnuggly's Gigglebread KANG for anything more recent then that.
CM7 = Wiimote + HDMI Out = Win
Honestly, I would do a Nandroid of stock and go for it. Worst case you restore back to stock and continue your life. Best case you never go back.

Former Eris folks....what ROM are you using?

Hey all,
Just found the "who's here from the Eris forum" thread and was going to post there, except it's closed.
Wondering what you former Eris folks are running for ROMs on the TBolt, how you like them and the differences you find between nanding and flashing.
Reading up on the TBolt ROMs it seems a bit more complicated than 'download and flash'
thoughts?
Thanks
~Me.
Hey man,
Not much different once you get used to CWR, instead of Amon.
Personally, I don't use/trust/like Rom Manager and just download all roms with my pc, load onto my SD and flash as normal. Took a bit to find Dalvik cache wipe but no problems since then. And I actually like the feature of having to scroll down through a bazillion "no"s to get to the flash this zip command.
I'm running Virus Sense version rom but using ADW instead of Sense and using Ziggy's kernels. I got a boot loop loading the power control zip on NonSense version so I just removed everything I don't use.
Flashed ZHP's blackedout mms and aosp dialer and I'm very happy with this beast.
I've actually been using my Eris as a music player at work, such a small screen, I think it's what is making me need glasses now, can't have anything to do with getting older.....
I had Taz's ROM on my Eris and now I am running BAMF 1.6.3nte. At first I was freaked out at not having Amon but I have been able to use CWR flawlessly so far.
Im using the broken CM7 pre-alpha as my daily driver
everything works except for 4g but that will come soon and few other items are broken but for a pr-alpha its a dam good rom
ps flash an aosp kernel too
Stock Rom here I need a Rom to come out that makes me want to root/flash my bolt. Oh well there's always tomorrow!

Lol chimp everyone thinks Ur a dude
Just like Bimmer I do everything manually (without rom mananger). On the Eris I bounced back and forth between Tazz,s and Shed's CM builds. On the TBolt I've been pretty happy with Das BAMF roms. These TB forums are a world different than the Eris forums.

No worries at all, "chimpsnest" isn't really a very froo-froo girly name like "MrsTBoltLover" (hey, that's a good one), and my avatar is a little manly too - if I didn't disagree w/the "pinking" of sports symbols I'd throw a pinked out Bruins B up there, but I find that blasphemous
My BF calls me a phone dork and loved picking on me when I was tweaking my Eris. I tell him he's just jealous w/his Moto Droid Pro and lack of rooting and greatness I think he's just waiting for me to mess my phone up, ever the pessimist
If I do flash ROMs (which I'm starting to feel the itch to do) I think I will do it via the boot menu instead of ROM manager, so I guess I'd just do Power/Volume down to get in there, then "recovery" which gets me into CWM, then the same data wiping and dalvik wiping, then install zip from SD card and (hopefully) off I'd go.
What is it that ROM manager does - just sort of simplify the process? The fact that it's a program makes me wonder what happens if I can't get back into my phone and back into the program?
I do miss the folks from our little forum, seems we had a great crew and it's not quite the same here (still great people, but you know what I mean).
Loving the Bolt, I'm lucky to be in a 4G area 90% of the time, so it would be nice to have a ROM that has that capability.
Running BAMF 1.1 stripped....awesome!!!
Prior to that lightning rom 3.3.1 also awesome...those seem to be the 2 most stable imo

And as for cwr ..took me a little bit to get used to it but its pretty much the same as amon in theory ....a bit more shuffling around though but it seems to work just fine.

Oooh, I can flash just a kernel, hadn't thought of that! So, what has this Kernel done for ya? Do you notice differences w/it, battery life, etc? Does it mess w/4G at all?
Feels like starting the learning process all over again
FWIW I have never had an issue using rom manager on either the Fascinate or TB since moving on from the Eris. I t just does all the steps for you. Reboots recovery, wipes what needs wiping(minus your bum),flashes then reboots. It's a very handy program.
As far as the roms go I have only ever used bamf and cm7. Adryn and TDB did amazing work on the Fascinate and I trust their work. I'm also very much looking forward to what JT and Kaos have up their sleeves for this monster.
I'm not sure there is a "best" kernel out there right now as all phones react differently but once again I have great luck with both Adryn's and droids kernels.
Good luck getting your phone set up and don't be afraid of flashing due to the different recovery. While this forum is not as close nit and familiar as the Eris people, once you learn who to trust and ask questions too the support you will receive will be just as good.
Im running the updated stock rom w/ Adrynalynes 4.4.7 Kernal...

I did notice battery improvement after flashing 4.3 kernel but then after the 4g outage my battery went down hill. So I won't blame the kernel, as I believe it is the network. And there has been no ill effects on 4g.

I actually like Tesla Coil a lot but BAMF has my heart right now.

About to embark on a journey...

Bought the G2X in April (my first android0, returned several, finally got a good one, never rooted any of them let alone flash ROMs, and am now about to start installing cwm via NV followed by running CM7 RC1. Wish me luck!
I would flash the latest nightly, but that's just me.
I was told to start with RC1 as it is more stable. Maybe I will do the latest nightly.
One question:
Why didn't I do this sooner?!?

Most of the time they don't think that the risk is worth it. Even after bricking a MT3G and almost bricking another (damn SPL updates and such), I still find it worth it. Alot of my friends hate on android because it's too buggy, but I find that a solid custom ROM usually fixes things.
They just don't feel comfortable with it. To each their own I guess
yea man i would flash latest nightly cuz after rc1 this has happened ( post rc), double data speeds, ttf on camera, change lockscreen pic, more stable, faster, and now we are on 2.3.5 instead of 2.3.4, a bunch of stuff man the nightlys have ben very stable
My G2x is in the mail, planning on CM7/Faux's Kernel as soon as i get it!
New question: CM7 is buggy when it comes to HDMI output - tried playing a movie I have on the sd card and it would cut out every 3 minutes or so then pop back up - so I would like to go to the rooted GB ROM. Question is do I need to do a data dump and cache dump to install that new ROM?

[Q] ROM choice?

I was wondering what was a better ROM to use for the Infuse, ZEUS by dman, or the CM7 port?
I was using CM7 and tried Zeus 3, but ended up switching back. I didn't like it. When I saw the 5 version posted, I decided to give Zeus another try. Other than a brief GB stock try, I haven't strayed from what Dman has wrought with Zeus 5.2.

IMO Zeus is the way to go, everything works but HDMI and Dman's 5.2 build is rock solid and it's hard to go wrong with an Infuse native rom!

noob, new to flashing, took a stab ended up choosing zeus. rooted, flashed, odin to stock,"soft-bricked"(dog's fault),Gtg's odin recovery, flashed again(all without posting a single ?, not because I'm smart, but because these devs are!) I love it, am having some wi fi issues i am trying to figure out. Going to try other's, even the dman recommends, just to try, i am sure i will end up running with zeus.
ps dman sent you a donation and a pm(realize now u probably don't read them), but thanks for showing me how much I love my infuse!
I CAN FROM BIONIX TO ZEUS AND it's awsome, no freeze like bionix when you unlock the screen, altough when you get a call, it tends to not responsive on the first swipe, the second try will do it. i think it's lag
i just hope it uses less memory, it's about 200~250 when you start up the phone, so far so good
speaker on both roms sucks. i drive all day and i need speaker to be really loud, both are not load enough for me. anyone have any apps or hacks that turn your speaker up?
try the zeus 5.2 it's awsome
i flashed it over bionix without going stock.

Volume+ in the market works well for me on phone and tablet.
ZEUS is the only way to go, IMO.
I tried Zeus briefly, and if I had spent the time to fix the wifi I can see why so many people like it, but I love the look of CM7, and for my use it's been great, so I went back. If you want a stock rom, would vote Zeus, (might eventually go back to Zeus if bluetooth never gets sorted out on CM7) but CM7 is a solid port, looks good and flashes easy.

On my flash, it had issues, and from what I found on the 4000 page Zeus thread, there had been others having the same issue. I gave up trying to find the mentioned fix, sure it was there, just couldn't find it. I had flashed the ICS theme and hadn't liked the changes so I went back to CM7.
Next time I try Zeus, I'll go back to stock first as recommended on your install instructions, I'm sure I'll have better luck. Currently I'm waiting to see if the new old stock Gingerbread pushes Zeus to 5.3
rom review by a newbie user
I try this roms and Im more focused on battery juice and customability options...
Im heavy user not in things like widgets or music or videos, but I do make many calls, use mail and chat by whatsapp.
so I tell you my best (and tried) roms
caty 3.0 the fast in everything (reboot, display etc), perfect battery for smartphone, i have to use it with uckk4 b/c with newers modems no good work for my slow data.
zeus: its almost like caty for me, totally recomend specially for themes.
darkyrom, cool rom, love the touchwiz! customable, has the darky ota, an app that you can use to change thing, its like rom manager but with many options for download.
sauron rom, my current rom, i like it because of the fully customable options in power menu, settings, it is fast like darky, almost the same but with more customable options.
CM7, stable, nice boot animation, have the plus of everything the cyanogen team has to offer in a simple gingerbread launcher.
miui, I like touchwiz! I like it, the music, and themes! its so different and beatifull, but the battery issue its something important to me, the rom its not bad, remember that battery issues exist in all smartphones, but if you are not a heavy user, go for it!
I hope it helps you.

When you downloaded the darky rom? Did you have version 10.4 and in which case would you upload? I only have version 10.3 didn't realize that there was an update so I never downloaded it. A couple of different users were asking for it, so I looked and realized I didn't have the latest.
Also, because this is a port, the darky ota app does not work with this phone, and I'm PRETTY sure that it's not included... wouldn't work if it was. There's no hellraiser on the go.. lol.
If you look in the last couple pages of boost's MIUI thread, as of 2-15-12 anyway.. then you will see some tips to improve the battery life of MIUI. That should help you..

First off, I'd like to thank the devs for all the hard work they have put into the roms and such. Some really neat stuff. But it seems like every rom I've tried has at least one issue that makes using my phone less than ideal. It is afterall, just a tool to get things done. And I have found that 2.2.1 works perfectly for me.
To be honest, after tweaking 2.2 with Go Launcher, I don't notice much difference between 2.2 and 2.3. Except that it works better for me. Perhaps it may have been my fault, and I'm not 100% sure, but I followed the directions to a T, and still had persistant minor issues.
Again, thank you for your hard work and dedication. It's still a great place to hang out, and I'll probably stick around for off-topic or general phone chat. Cheers and good luck.
Do a complete wipe, including the internal memory... No issues later

Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, I might get the urge again one day, (the linux tinkerer inside will need to scratch his itch) but for now I'm happy with stock. It's all about the right to choose what works for us as individuals, right? Plus, I'm busy testing/bug reporting with Ubuntu 12.04 beta.
Actually, after using stock for a bit and tweaking it, it's really pretty good. It looks just about the same as I had with 2.3.6 tbh. Carry on flashaholics!

You should probably stay with stock roms anyway because if samsung was to send out a ics update for the samsung infuse (which I highly doubt)

They are not going to even roll out gingerbread for the infuse. A few people were able to download it for like one day, then they pulled it. Unless you do a custom rom, you are stuck with 2.2. But that's ok with me. The phone works flawlessly now.

LOL... Sammy release ICS for the INFUSE!!!!! Oh God... I just died a little inside.. Never gonna happen.. the morons can't even figure out how to make Gingerbread work without needing to pull it the same day that they finally decide that they want to do something other than just go right ahead and leak a copy to us...

+ a **** ton Erik
If they released ICS for the Infuse, it would be covered in Sammy's Touchwiz bull****. Not to mention ppl here are donating two more Infuses so that we can get ICS on a hacked up GB kernel. Nuff said...

Well, guess what? It was really bugging me that everyone else was enjoying problem free custom roms, and it never really worked 100% for me. I wound up screwing up my stock install, so I figured what the hell, may as well give it one more try. As I have mentioned in my other thread, besides the usual wipes, I formatted data/cache/system, and now everything seems to be working great. Before I was just formatting system. Could that have contributed to the glitches I had before?
Regardless, it's fine for now, and I'm happy. Plus, I get to use a couple apps that aren't available to 2.2 users.
Well here's a quick update: I don't know, but I think my infuse doesn't like any custom roms. Every single one I try works great for a few days, then goes bonkers. I don't know what else to do except go back to stock. Any ideas?
Edit: could a bad ext sd card make my phone go crazy? It just died on me. I put in a 2gb card for now, and all is well with aeon, but it's only been installed (aeon) for 1 hour. I guess we'll see.

Non-owner, Q on a stable functional Rom

Not your typical, "what is the most stable Rom?" thread. I rooted my buddies phone when he came to see me about a week ago, and tossed a nice ICS Rom on it, AospX. Really nice Rom, BUT, he's having some issues with it. Since he is not quite as nerdy as I, I wanted to reach out to those of you who in fact DO own the phone, and can recommend a full featured Rom that is somewhat stable.... i.e. Camera works, voice calls, data, w/out random reboots. He lives 4 hours from me in Denver, so I don't make it down there often enough to really give him the latest and greatest frequently.
I have a few lined up for him to try later tonight:
Android_Revolution 6.3.3
BlissDroid V1 and the 1.1 update
RCMix.Energized 2.21.12
If there is an MIUI port, GB or ICS, I would love to get him on that. I have searched the forum and only found mention of the Rom, not the Rom itself. Feel free to shoot me a link!!!
Thank you Ladies and Gentlemen.
The best you can do is let him download the xda app, teach him the basics:
-where to go to download roms
-how to backup
-how to wipe or get a wipe script
-how to flash
-how to recover if anything goes wrong, i.e.: mount sd card to transfer the rom from the pc to the cell
-and probably more I forgot.
Rd miui is nice as well the one made by mcgrath. Those are gb. I can't remember if bliind made a gb miui, he is working on an ics.
You can get roms from both the inspire and dhd forums.
Edit: It may be best you keep him on GB and wait till ICS is 99% working. Cause if you don't, he may start complaining like our girlfriends and wives. I'm not insinuating anything nor mean any disrespect, I'm just trying to help you avoid constant calls/texts cause something may not be working and he not being as "nerdy" as us.

YUP! Lol... I want to teach him the way of the Samurai, but he is, VERY VERY new. But we were all new. Thanks for the ideas. I know exactly what you mean, except my wife is on MIUI V4 on here Nexus and loves it. No complaining!
Again, thanks, and I'll be checking this every little bit on my way to Denver.

Maybe write down the steps somewhere for him just in case. All this info when we are new is overwhelming.
By the way, thanks to you I've received my 100th thanks

SENT VIA ICS MIUI ON THE INTERNETS!!!
Even though it was mentioned, I didn't realize DHD was the desire hd.... and there appears to be a V4 MIUI on MIUI.us for that. Next time I go see him, that's the trick. For the mean time, CM9 was flashed. So far do good. Pretty smooth! Bad as battery life. He's happy.
