It's been fun, but it's back to stock for me - Samsung Infuse 4G

First off, I'd like to thank the devs for all the hard work they have put into the roms and such. Some really neat stuff. But it seems like every rom I've tried has at least one issue that makes using my phone less than ideal. It is afterall, just a tool to get things done. And I have found that 2.2.1 works perfectly for me.
To be honest, after tweaking 2.2 with Go Launcher, I don't notice much difference between 2.2 and 2.3. Except that it works better for me. Perhaps it may have been my fault, and I'm not 100% sure, but I followed the directions to a T, and still had persistant minor issues.
Again, thank you for your hard work and dedication. It's still a great place to hang out, and I'll probably stick around for off-topic or general phone chat. Cheers and good luck.

Do a complete wipe, including the internal memory... No issues later

Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, I might get the urge again one day, (the linux tinkerer inside will need to scratch his itch) but for now I'm happy with stock. It's all about the right to choose what works for us as individuals, right? Plus, I'm busy testing/bug reporting with Ubuntu 12.04 beta.
Actually, after using stock for a bit and tweaking it, it's really pretty good. It looks just about the same as I had with 2.3.6 tbh. Carry on flashaholics!

Nothing wrong...your good... it's all about your requirements. Stock or Custom ROMs

You should probably stay with stock roms anyway because if samsung was to send out a ics update for the samsung infuse (which I highly doubt) you would be the first to receive it me on the other hand I had to go to custom roms because you can customize it more and I hate touchwiz

They are not going to even roll out gingerbread for the infuse. A few people were able to download it for like one day, then they pulled it. Unless you do a custom rom, you are stuck with 2.2. But that's ok with me. The phone works flawlessly now.

Well, guess what? It was really bugging me that everyone else was enjoying problem free custom roms, and it never really worked 100% for me. I wound up screwing up my stock install, so I figured what the hell, may as well give it one more try. As I have mentioned in my other thread, besides the usual wipes, I formatted data/cache/system, and now everything seems to be working great. Before I was just formatting system. Could that have contributed to the glitches I had before?
Regardless, it's fine for now, and I'm happy. Plus, I get to use a couple apps that aren't available to 2.2 users.

Well here's a quick update: I don't know, but I think my infuse doesn't like any custom roms. Every single one I try works great for a few days, then goes bonkers. I don't know what else to do except go back to stock. Any ideas?
Edit: could a bad ext sd card make my phone go crazy? It just died on me. I put in a 2gb card for now, and all is well with aeon, but it's only been installed (aeon) for 1 hour. I guess we'll see.

Went from a doer to a reader....

I don't know about anybody else, but when I had my captivate, I would frequent these boards and download just about any ROM I could get my hands on for the quest for a better phone.
Since getting the Inspire a week ago, it seems as though now I frequent the forums just to read. I have no ambition to have anything but the stock ROM because it is just that pleasant to use.
In fact, I really don't even think I want to root.....not really much of a need anymore other that Titanium backup and easy sideloading.
This is the first smartphone I have been truly pleased with out of the box.
If I could get the wifi hotspot to work consistently I think I would skip the root too. I am coming from a bone stock Nexus one. I really like vanilla android, but Sense does add a nice touch.

Ya What he said! Just rember to reboot everytime you change your apn. it works great and from the testing i have done and speaking with ATT they cant tell the difference..
Agreed, but
I loved this phone out of the box, but i have to tinker. It is a problem i have. I rooted and have tried just about every ROM out there. Nothing is quite as good as stock, but there are some really good ones out.
If you are happy with your phone, i say leave it. But if you want to root, this phone should be great as the devs start working with source and cooking up great ROMS and kernels.
The only tinkering I want to do now is theming. I will patiently wait for someone to deodex the stock Rom.

What is the attraction to CM7?

These forums are getting littered with people asking for help after screwing up their phones trying to install CM7. Why are people who don't know what they're doing trying to install a ROM that is not yet fully functional? This should be left to devs who are trying to fix issues, not people who need their phones to work. I just don't get it.
I thought the topic was taken down.
Edit: Nevermind, the topic is still there. Imo though, I think it should be taken down and only progress be shown. Might prevent the massive amounts of bricking and general failure to read directions.

Yeah, but too many of those people are ending up in here looking for help when it goes bad. It just takes up space and energy better used to solve issues with actual working ROMs. Let the Devs do the development work that they're so good at.
Probably because CM is a big name dev and people think it'll be superior to what they're currently using, oh, and like it was said earlier, Gingerbread... I don't see what the huge fuss is about with Gingerbread, nothing huge has changed from Froyo and Ice Cream is already in development so I think Gingerbread will turn out to be like the early 2.0 Eclair build, something to skip over until a big update is available.
CM isn't what it used to be back in its hayday with the G1/Dream and MT3G/Magic, so I'm not sure what people are expecting... Nothing against the CM team of course, the entire team does great work even if the releases are taking a really long time compared to before.
I'll be waiting it out, if I get an official Gingerbread update for either of my phones, I'll do them, otherwise I'm going to wait for the next big update which is actually worth installing... But I agree, there seems to be a huge deal about a simple update for no apparent reason at all, Its not like the Eclair > Froyo update which improved performance by a good margin, so really, there isn't much to gain by installing Gingerbread other than a few UI improvements (which most of us won't see anyways since we all use 3rd party launchers).
Here's a perfect example of how dangerous this place can be sometimes.

I haven't flashed it because I don't know what I'm doing, scared and too lazy to start messing with odin or the like, but I understand the urge. By all accounts it's stable enough. I'll probably give it a go within a few days. At which point, if I brick my phone, I'll get a new one and consider it a learning experience. Plus, based on what I read yesterday it's never going to be as simple as updating a .zip anyway, so I might as well cross that bridge sooner rather than later.

And yes, I'm not one bit ashamed of lusting for the obvious the gimmick. Gingerbread CRT out animation alone would be worth the risk, tbh, much less the whole gingerbread rom.
If people refuse to heed warnings, its their own fault.
As for Gingerbread, I can't speak for the others, but I want SIP support.
JVM improvements
Gingerbread claimed to have faster garbage collection and OpenGL among other things. It will probably have bigger memory footprint on a downside.
I will wait til Audience noise suppression support is there, which is likely never.
I will probably try it when Voodoo Sound and OC/UV are in the kernel, and all major bugs fixed. This likely to happen with the help of Galaxy S community.
I don't get the attitude towards being more AOSPish. AOSP is already out there. It is Samsung Captivate which needs native driver support to have all its internals fully functional.
I keep Torch 1.5 as a workhorse for now.

There is no aosp for the captivate. Cm is built from actual source compared to piece together roms...which have been good by the way. And why create a thread about cm7 and peoples motives for flashing? Its new...that's why I flashed it! I have never used cm before so I personally wanted to see what it was like. It is the best rom I have used for speed without any lagfix. People have started flashing phones since I have been a member with no experience...it is going to stay that way. [RUMOR] 2.3 OTA. Take it for what it is

Okay, just remember this is a total rumor, and complete speculation at this point.
This article says that it is "likely" that Samsung will be the first handset maker to provide 2.3 Gingerbread to the U.S. Cellular carriers.
http://androidandme.com/2011/03/pho...the-first-gingerbread-updates-to-us-carriers/
***This is complete speculation, has nothing to do with any of the updates of late, this could not even mean an update for our phone. I am simply posting a link so that everyone else can know. I expect no flame in the thread, it will most likely end in a Close Thread. Take this thread for what it is.***
Eh. 2.3 with the TW interface won't be so great anyways. I'll flash CM7 when it becomes easier to flash and more stable. But it would be nice to see Samsung and ATT pushing out Gingerbread earlier than everyone else.
EDIT: On second thought, I can almost see this purely because the first Gingerbread phone ever was Samsung.
Yeah it is very possible, but if it's true it could take a while

If you check the CM7 Q&A thread it says that its not likely that it will ever be a single zip install, so I don't think there's much hope for an easier install, although its fairly easy to begin with anyways. I'm running it right now and it seems bug free for the most part my only complaint is the camera app because its not as nice as the Samsung one but I can live with it.

Could be true.. Probably won't be OTA, but I wouldn't be surprised of the international galaxy s got a 2.3 update by the end of next month. They got 2.2 in what, September, October 2010?
I doubt we'll ever see an official 2.3 for the Captivate though.
Bleh, even if Samsung delivered 2.3 tomorrow it would still be eight to twelve months before AT&T could get it's act together and release the software for Captivate and that is if there is ANY plan to update Captivate. I won't hold my breath and really don't need their 2.3.
One thing nice, is that it could be a hint that the Internation Galaxy S is going to be getting an official release sometime soon, which in turn could translate into ports anyway that could contribute to even better custom ROM's. And i doubt it will come to the Captivate. Why when they are trying to sell a new device?

Just installed CM7 on my cappy Thursday took about 5 mins, just follow connexion2005's video linked in the CM7 thread and you'll have no issues. Just make sure you have the files downloaded and your phone flashed to stock before hand.
Well one can hope but to be honest we will get a ported version long before an official version, that is even if we do get one with the Captivate to be considered EOL by ATT as of the middle of next month. Will it be OTA? God I hope not lol
There already is a "official" release. CM7!

Feel of Gingerbread is better than any froyo rom..
Just with the 2-3 weeks I've been on CM7....its amazing! First its just plain fast, even in its developmental stage it's supremely fast. Secondly The small details, It has the glow effect when you get to the end of a scrollable list, which i think adds a nice touch. Lastly The CRT shutdown is really nice, I don't think I could go back after having it. All in all its really fun to use

I am running A6 as we speak which I got from these forums.
Camera doesn't work (for video or pictures)
SU doesn't work (haven't toyed with workaround yet)

Still a really impressive interface to play around with, and I think I can live with the cons for a little while until a more stable rom gets hosted. I will say I am in love with this os though.
The interface alone is so modern and fresh feeling I can't entirely explain it.

Yes I would recommend the CM9 version (or working towards it) if you want to try out ICS. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1363760
The 3g works without any manipulations, almost everything works as a matter of fact. Calendar sync did need some .apk switched in to get calendar working in beta2 but at least for me in beta3 I didn't have to redo anything. All my apps from tibu work and download correctly. It just seems to be very smooth.
PS. I also upgraded to the ATT SGS2 and love it but I also have my cappy as backup and love messing with all the roms for it still. Basically testing it all out. Plus I am pleasantly surprised that the cappy got ICS before the SGS2.

1-) Sick of GB and Im not a huge Sence fan, although I can live with it if needed... Is JB possible? Working 100%?
2-) HBOOT 1.45.0013, S-ON, & I don't really feel like doing any wiretrick, although I will if needed, is this still the best way to go?
edit #1: CM9 installed! (flashed boot.img with fastboot), back button doesnt work on front of phone.. researching..
Wipe dalvik, wipe cache then flash Gapps. That's fixed it in several instances.
Or use jellybam or pacman

Eh he wants ICS not JellyBean. I may go on a scattered search to see if either ROM has an ICS counterpart though

Trying JellyBAM. Camera crashes the phone when flash goes off (although flashlight works fine). My corporate mail/calendar account also can't access the right security settings, so I'm crippled for work purposes. If you use these features, consider something other than JellyBAM.
Tried PACman but switched. Don't recall why, now. Maybe I'll try it again. . . .

PACman and JellyBAM have the same base and kernel so you will have the same issues connecting to work email.
I've seen other users post this about the camera flash crashing things, but I was never able to recreate it. So I just summed it up to an improper wipe/flash. No one has offered any kind of logs either to go along with said crashes, but that's not saying it will help because again we can't recreate these issues during testing.

MT4GS ICS ROM that works 100%? It doesn't exist.
Scverhagen's CM9.1 releases have far fewer issues in my opinion than the MyTouch Stock gingerbread 2.3.4. I'm still running r7.

Inaccurate exaggeration is nobody's friend. It's a nice ROM, sure, but saying it has less issues than stock? You just lost any further credibility.
Happens to be my opinion based on my own personal experience however. And will remain so.
I'm kinda like you david, I consider a ROM 100% when it runs 100% of the things I have to have or need. I realize it can't be like that for everyone but for those that it is, it allows a person to enjoy WAY more ROMs. JMO.....

But when I read reviews of a ROM, maybe I'm wanting to try it but trying to determine what things other people are encountering. Someone who says, "This ROM is perfect! Everything works!" but then I find out that, no, everything doesn't work and even they later admit that "some things aren't working but I can overlook that", well, that totally invalidates the entire thread. How am I to trust anything that person writes about anything else? Yes, we have subjective opinions about ROMs, but it does nobody any favor to exaggerate the abilities of a ROM. If you tell me a ROM is perfect and "better than stock", then I have some extra high expectations.
I understand completely. But there is more to a declaration of perfection than the statement itself. It would depend on who makes it and their knowledge of different ROMs but to me it just means it's damn close. I usually find out the details when I run it myself. That's when I'm reminded that nothing is perfect. Even the original developers don't distribute perfection and there is a HUGE well paid team of them.
I can appreciate anyone's expectations of a shared original ROM or a port to be one of perfection but that usually means the person with those expectations just doesn't realize all that's involved. People have to remember that this is more a personally fulfilling "hobby" than their vocation.
My biggest frustration is people wanting something that works 100%. Compared to what? Stock? Half the time the "Stock" ROMs have their own issues. That's why we root and ROM, to improve the experience over Stock.
What features do you want? What's your opinion of 100%? Sense? AOSP?
Hell, even the title of the thread isn't 100% accurate. There isn't an official ICS ROM, so there can't be a debloated version. And the word "Best" implies that there are at least 2 ICS Roms that work 100%....
[/Rant]
(Crap, I obviously need more sleep over the weekends....)
Weekends are too short ya know.

Exactly This.
In even the best ICS "closest to what factory would be" ROM I've found (Virtuous Primadonna), 1080p recording, WiFi calling, and tethering were borked. To me 100% means 100% as in all options the phone came with work and not having options taken away.
MikTouch is still the best I've found. Once the Xperia ZL drop for purchase I'm bailing on my MT4GS. I absolutely love this phone, but I hate HTC with a burning of a thousand suns for bailing on this phone which was supposed to be a flagship device.

wifi calling works on ALL ics roms. there is a workaround for tethering involving barnacle and open garden. so that leaves 1080p recording
