[Q] is my wifi broken ? - HTC Desire S

hi everyone
just got a Desire S this morning From Orange UK, but not sure if the Wifi is working correctly.
phone works fine as does 3G for downloading, however when i turn wifi on and connect it to the internet it stops 3G working on the phone and wifi doesnt apear to work either. I.e if i turn on wifi and then try and connect to the market place it gives a connection error. Also the same with the game Drag Racing, can race over 3G but if i turn on wifi, can not race over 3G or wifi says no connections.
I've also tried by turning the phone into airplane mode and then turning on wifi to see if that will connect but still can not use any apps that need internet connection.
Is this normal ?

Thanks !
havent noticed any drop in signal, however i am sitting less than 3 feet from the router currently, its set up fine and can see an ip address and signal when i check the phone.
However i did try a software update check and it worked over wifi no problem at all.
I am wondering if Orange have set the phone so that it will only work on 3G for most applications as it comes with there "signal boost" app that sends phone calls over wifi.
I have had a similar problem with a Nokia N97 mini from them untill i debranded and re-flashed the phone.
Any recomendations to re-flash the phone ?

its an app built in by orange that allows calls to be made over wifi if you dont have phone signal. looked in the market place and its not available to download on its own, on the orange website they call it Signal Boost (UMA), its more a gimick than anything.
turning off the mobile data side of things was the first thing i did hence why i thought wifi was broken. damn you orange !!

[Q] Wifi signal?
Does anyone get a weak wifi signal with their Nexus S? Whenever I connect to my at home wifi I never get full bars and something I'll just randomly lose signal. Also it seems to go pretty slow. I used to have the Mytouch4G and it work flawlessly with the wifi. Anyone else having this problem?

OMG yesss I do.
Just about a room away I loose signal, almost completely. = 0
IDK, but I see more flaws every day that passes
Mine's been working fine over Wi-Fi. I'm pretty glad it does too, because my only data option with it is Wi-Fi..
Sent from my Droid using XDA App
Wifi has been working great for me. It reconnects automatically and doesn't drop. The signal seems on par with my nexus one.
Speed wise, is it on par with the 3G network?
[Q] Wifi does not work anymore after rooting :(
So, I unlocked my Android 2.3.1 and rooted it ... But if I click on wifi so I could connect to my modem it says Error and wont even search or anything. I tried reseting too but still no luck .. What is the problem and how to fix this ??
That's odd, I didn't have any issues with wifi as I connected to Android Market to downloaded ROM Manager during my rooting process earlier. Have you tried flashing a custom ROM on your device to see if it'll fix it?
No I didnt, would that work? .. A friend told me to install a new "kernel" but I dont want to overwhelm my android with custom made kernels .
your problem is you used one of the quick methods of rooting your phone, which used a kernel that wasn't from the exact rom you have.
if your on stock 2.3.1, you will need the stock 2.3.1 boot.img, and then you'll need to root it manually the long way via adb command line. search the nexus s development section for how-to's. they are all there.
i too had this problem, had to install MoDaCo ROM to fix it, but i dont regret rooting, i now have custom rom and over clocked cpu on the nexus s
you have two options, either to flash NANDROID backup to un-root and return to stock or install a custom ROM, i choose MoDaCo bcoz of its UI, it looks and feels just like the stock one.

Yes, that's the point of MoDaCo roms, to make minimal changes to the look and feel of the phone, but to improve performance with his custom optimizations.

*When i use dynamic ip I am unable to connect to wifi. It shows obtaining Ip and never connects.
*In connectify when I was able to connect to wifi the device is shown with an android device name. but now the device is shown as unknown.

[Q] Nexus S Wifi Settings - force close
Hi all,
Just got a new Nexus S - all was well at home. Took it to work today and noticed something very odd. It was fine until entering the wifi settings menu - at which point it dramatically slowed down. I got two 'not responding, close or wait' messages before being able to join the network.... all other settings are fine - just the wifi area.
Weird - wondering what could cause this... too many wifi networks broadcasting (am in middle of London)...?
Anyone seen anything similar?

Too many WiFi around you shouldn't cause that.
Try rebooting and setting again if you haven't already.
Hmmm - rebooted and still have the same issue. At home, or even a block away from the office it all works fine. But in the office itself, although it connects and uses the wifi fine, the settings page is VERY slow to load and gives me the wait/force close message.
Out of interest - I also have 'wifi analyser' from the marketplace. This too is very slow and unresponsive when in the office.
So - it is definately something to do with the wifi here.... but have not got a clue what. Before I join the wifi, or when I am physically somewhere else it all works fine.
Wifi is WPA-TKIP, the key is a very long jumble of letters but surely that is not an issue.
Strange eh!!!

[Q] Possible WiFi problem?
Hi there, just bought a Nexus S, also used to have Nexus One.
The thing is for some wireless networks even though I enter the password correctly, it says connected and still there is no connection at all. (I mean browser tries to connect but at the end it says page could not be found) I even tried with an ad-hoc network that I created with my laptop but still the problem exists.
At home I'm able to my network without a problem. The type of network I'm trying to connect is: WPA2 Personal with AES. Is there any known issue about AES at Android system? Afaik there is no way to change the encryption used right?
this might actually not be a nexus S issue.
some modems/switches/routers are configured to block certain devices/applications/package's
we have a modem and router with both wifi.
but my psp/nDS cant connect to the modem, but can connect with the router

i have a similar problem. My Nexus S connects to my router only within a few hours after a router reset. Then it stucks at "obtaining ip" and never connected before I do another router reset.
My home wifi is WPA2 type, and for WEP type wifi my NS never got connected.

[Q] Wifi-calling stuck 'ON' when losing wifi connection

When wifi and wifi-calling are enabled, it disconnects from the tmo network.. Great.. no problemo. I don't want it connected to the tmo network at the same time.
But.. when I lose the wifi.. i.e. service is interrupted, I leave the area, etc., then wifi-calling is stuck "ON" and I cannot return to the tmo network because the app is trying to find the wi-fi connection. This causes all voice/data to be dead.
I have tried killing the wifi-calling app via ATK, it won't shut down. I tried to FC it, no go. I tried to reboot the phone.. no go. I tried to kill it via Watchdog.. no go.
So basically, if I forget to shut off the app b4 I leave my wifi area, I'm screwed and dead in the water. Or, if the wifi connection is lost (i.e. service interruption), I'm screwed.
The only way wifi-calling will display the on/off button is when it has a wifi connection.. I know, I know.. I must force myself to remember to shut the stupid app off before leaving the local network.. but I forget at times.
I have only found 1 work around, and I'm hoping someone else can chime in on this. I'd like to see if there is an easier way around this.. It can be fixed via freezing the app. Then the tmo network kicks in. As soon as the app is unfrozen, it goes back to searching out wifi and disabling all voice/data.. until I get a wifi connection.
Thoughts?
can someone test this to see if they get the same results?
Mine switches as it should when I leave a wifi area.

Seriously? You have wifi calling and wifi enabled. You shut off wifi and it automatically switches off wifi calling?
that's messed up. If I do that, I'm w/o service. Guess I'll reinstall the app..

Thanks!!! I have discussed this on the forums a bunch of times in misc. conversations and no one has said "Hey, that's not the case for mine." I thought it was a glitch with the app.
R&R'd the app.. good to go. Thanks so much.. It's been like this since I took it out of the box.

Wifi issues

Currently on stock ROM, not rooted. My wifi seems to stop connecting intermittently. The Network appears to be present when checking but it won't connect to it for 5 minutes at a time. The wifi sleep policy is also set to never

try to remove the battery for a few minutes...if it doesn't work try to access another wifi because your router might be the problem.
nope....
battery pull definitely didnt help. I went ahead and adjusted my network router for dual band to see if that helps at all
Also have WiFi issues
I run into that as well. It says I am connected, even gives me an IP, but all my data still seems to go over the cellular network..
Very frustrating at home.

You can use Juice Defender to automatically disconnect data when you're on WiFi... I've been using it for months and it has worked flawlessly. You can also go into Menu... Settings... Wireless and network....Mobile networks... and manually uncheck "Use packet data" (this is what allows mobile data to connect).
I had these problems also I talk to one of the geek squad guys at best buy he told me that samsung products have problems with some routers because samsung products like to keep the same ip address which my conflict with other wifi products. So I bought a new router that was stronger and assigned my phone an ip address and that solve my problem.

WiFi issues after Marshmallow update

Hey guys,
Having an issue with WiFi since the Marshmallow update. We have an open WiFi network at work that you need to sign in to the firewall to access internet. Previously it worked fine, but after the Marshmallow update, my phone constantly drops the WiFi network. It always happens when I lock the phone or otherwise let the screen turn off for more than about a minute, but it also happens even when I'm using my phone, if I'm on for more than about 5 minutes on average it drops the network. When I go to reconnect, it lists under the SSID "Internet not available" but I just tap the network and tap connect and it connects anyway, doesn't even make me sign into the firewall again. I'd really appreciate some help with this, if I can't get this fixed I'll be doing away with Android for good. I don't use my phone for much other than Facebook and games, so I'm not at all opposed to using a custom ROM if that would help. Just haven't installed one since CM7 on my HTC Evo Shift, so I duno which would be best for my situation. Thanks in advance for any input!
Bump. Hopefully someone has a solution...
One more bump before I give up...
Hi, I'm on stock firm, and after the last upgrade, I cannot connect to my work's wifi network. It's a EAP-MSCHAP2 connection. At home, wifi works flawlessly....

try talking to your system administrator at work. The upgrade may cause a comparability issue that maybe fixed by a simple tweak at work.

Android Wifi Calling issue

Hi,
I have noticed a strange behaviour using Wifi Calling. When I am away from home, and returning, it takes the phone about 15-20 mins for the wifi calling icon to show up and to be available. If I use airplane mode on/off it works instantly. I have seen this a few times on IOS as well, but seems more frequent on Android. So far tested on Samsung S22U and Sony Xperia 1 IV.
Also, today, while I was in a call, using VoWifi, the call dropped and when I looked immediately on the phone, vowifi icon was gone and it came back in a matter of 10 seconds.
Has anyone faced these issues and was able to narrow down the cause of it? My Wifi network does not have a firewall in place nor am I doing any sort of filtering. Changing between DNS servers makes no difference.
Turn off automatic WiFi network login on your phone and check again if it helped.
Hi, I do not have such option available. You mean wifi auto connect when in range?
Yes, because the phone can switch when the signal from the first router is weakening. (1)
Also, by setting up a manual connection, you can be sure that you are connecting to the router you want to connect to, not just any one. (2)

So you're saying turn those 2 settings off? I just recently ran into this issue with my Wi-Fi conking out intermittently and I'm experiencing 20% battery loss over night. I'm thinking its bad hardware. I just turned off these settings. I'll report back if it helps.
