ice cream? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so hearing the rumors of a new nexus coming with ice cream does that mean us current nexus s users especially the 4g won't get the ice cream update? id like to think the phone will be supported for awhile yet?

Of course our beloved phone will get the latest updates, at least for 18 months after the release. Nexus One already has the Gingerbread update, why wouldn't we get Ice cream Sandwich?
You can sleep tight, our Nexus S will continue to be supported for quite some time

mostly because i heard you will need a dual core to run it and our phones do not have that.

that's typical marketing bull ****. They said the same thing about gingerbread and my HTC CDMA hero is running it faster than the original 1.6.
Google never said that any newer version of android will need dual core. This is just what all the manufacturers would like you to believe so you buy into the hype and spend money for a new phone.
I bet you, all Nexus line phones will get ice cream sandwich before the SDK is even posted.

Google has been courting both HTC and LG for the next Nexus device. I posted a link to HTC's candidate on another thread. I know a lot of people will be disappointed if we dont get it but the NS4G is only weeks old the device itself is going on 6 months ...ours is just a refresh with a 4G radio. That being said i still think most 1ghz processor/512mb + devices should see the update. Eventhough at launch it wasnt the best speced device available. (A lot of the reason N1 users didnt jump ship for it and the reason we dont have the following of the N1 imo.)But all the reports from Google IO/CNET say its to bridge the gap between handsets and tabs. I know it stings but our device is dated already I'm not saying its a lack luster device but...It's not like the N1 which is still comparable to a majority of high end handsets available. The Nexus S just didn't make the evolutionary jump as far as the N1 did IMO. But time will tell I guess.

New device for each android version?

Seems like this article is saying there will be a new google device with each android release. Honestly this frustrates me.

Actually this makes sense. I read another article recently that made it a good case for Honeycomb coming to phones. When the N1 launched, it launched with 2.1 then was the first to get 2.2. We launched with 2.3 and will most likely be the first to get 2.4 so when the updates after that come around it will be about a year from the launch of our phone so it'll be about time for a new Nexus.

You think it will be a year? I'm not so sure though. What exactly is 2.4? Ice cream? Because this article says there will be a new device with ice cream. I also read somewhere that ice cream is projected for this summer. So that would mean a new "nexus" this summer.....?
They haven't even ironed out the bugs with gingerbread and they are planning to release something new with 2.4? I love this phone but its pretty galling that here its 2 months after release and we still don't have browser or reboot prob fixed.
On a side note, I'm thinking that it might be an LG phone if Google is really doing the round robin thing with nexus manufacturers. I doubt nexus will be a Motorola phone until they ditch that locked bootloader.

Android 3.x Ice Cream Sandwich Announced! Coming to a Mytouch near you!!!

Well everybody should be excited to hear that android 3.1 is upon us.
The next version of Google's Android operating system, codenamed Ice Cream Sandwich, will converge the formerly disparate phone and tablet versions of the OS, Google announced at its I/O keynote today. Ice Cream Sandwich will maintain a single UI across all form factors and will allow developers to create applications for both kinds of devices in one motion. It will follow the rollout of Android 3.1 to the Motorola Xoom tablet and Google TV.
Google says the Ice Cream Sandwich version of Android will "all be open source," including APIs for face-tracking and other new features. Developers will be able to account for all form factors within this same version of the OS, and Google will be adding a lot of UIs to accommodate Android devices of all shapes and sizes.
The announcement of Ice Cream Sandwich followed news of Android 3.1, which carries desirable features like resizable widgets in the application launcher. Android 3.1's trip over to Google TV will also carry with it the Android Marketplace and the usability of USB devices. At the keynote, Hugo Barra, director of Android product management, demoed the use of an XBox 360 controller with an Android game.
No official launch date has yet been announced for Ice Cream Sandwich, but Android 3.1 will be available to compatible devices as of today.
Oh ya one more thing, T-Mobile, AT&T and Verizon announced that it will be updating all devices to the new version of android until their 18 month birthday. So yes the mytouch will get Ice Cream Sandwich!!!!!!!!

So this device came out around novemeberish so we'll stop seeing "official" support around mid 2012ish. Well that's good to know at least, not really worried since we have XDA for the roms and other things.

Unfortunately, as I believe someone else has already mentioned that is for devices moving forward and I would imagine will not apply to our phones. They have not even really set any guidelines as to how they will even go about ensuring updates for devices, it's just a group of carriers and device manufacturers that have said they will attempt to follow through on this promise. I'm hopeful, but there is still the same issue of custom UIs, which require the manufacturer / carrier to update their code, and I think we all know how well that has worked out so far.

You think Ice Cream Sandwich will make the NS obsolete?

Anyone else think that Ice Cream will make the NS seem outdated and slow compared to the newer phones of HTC like the DHD, Incredible S and Desire S which have better processors and more ram?
Thinking of actually getting an htc again because of this lol Given the choice would you trade for one of the newer htc phones because of superior hardware alone?

You think a phone without hardware and softkey buttons would be easy to use? I'm a bit of a skeptic. Always enjoyed having to press something at the front to check for notifications.
damn, I'm still undecided if I'm gonna keep the NS or get the dhd or IS. Would you guys do it if you could?

I guess, you were actually attracted by those HTC devices because of the hardware
However, most of us here in Nexus S community, we choose Nexus S because it is pure google android.
And so, we're able to create greater and greater kernel and rom.
Yes! DHD and IS with 768 ram is awesome!
BUT! please be remind that it drain battery very much as you tend to run more apps in background with such more free memory.
I think so far 512mb is sufficient as it is able to kill background empty apps automatically when ram is low.
You mention that you play ninja while wifi on and music playing, it will lack.
I have a few suggestion for you
1st, Get ANDMemory from the market, Run it at TOP SPEED optimization at auto.
(Or extreme if you want)
2, You can try Trinity Kernel 1.44, it will gives you more power
3, You can try to use less widget as they drain memory+battery.
Anything, you can just PM me and I am more than happy to help
Just for you info,
I run Fruit Ninja THD version (Not the normal version) with Chain Fire 3D, with 3G connection going on. No lack, smooth like butter

They're still getting the OTA. But the general idea is that, we as true "Nexus" users don't like relying on manufacturers to do their part by releasing a OTA of the next Android version.
We like our phones:
1. Unbloated
2. New Android OS the week its announced.
3. Easy to unlock bootloader
And I honestly think those three factors are significant selling points in terms to the hardcore Android user. We can't fight specs, they get better and better everyday. However, we could fight on the battlefield in terms of software.
Hardware changes everyday and becomes better.
Software changes every couple of months and as Nexus users, we're guaranteed to get the updates asap without waiting 6+ months for the next update.
Smartphones have a life span of about 6 months these days. If you're lucky.
Unless you're content with the older software and hardware. But at the rate hardware is changing and the progression of software its hard to keep up to date without shelling out a bunch of cash every 6 months.

Yup. Kinda like how the G1 survived forever, and I think the G1 is still pretty strong today. Not as strong as how it was one or two yearsa ago (maybe I'm wrong because I dont follow the G1 forums anymore) but its dev community made the phone for what it is. The developer community and the "community" using that particular phone makes the phone.. well.. THE PHONE!
The only thing obsolete are these new phones coming out with Android 2.2 still. Gingerbread (2.3) has been out since late last year (December). It's now July 16, 2011.. six months later. How many phones have gotten Gingerbread officially? That's right only less than ten devices. Who's obsolete now?

Yeah.. they start reaching eol in about 6 months if you want to stay current/latest greatest. What's the nexus s at? Around 6? And I'm already considering dual (or more) core phones with better specs etc... in the very near future. Sure I could keep the nexus s for another 2 years, but I wont. Maybe you will.

It's more of an Android problem. The current Nexus S isn't being maxed out at what's possible. The software always lags the hardware. All Android has had over the last year are devices with better hardware yet that hasn't really made a lick of difference in performance.

Bored, are we? Why speculate on something that may or may not see the light of day for the G2x - I doubt the phone will still be in use when Android 10000.9 hits.
Gingerbread just hit and its not even a final release. Lets get GB 100% before we start *****ing and complaining about it not being able to boil water and pleasure the hamsters.
...on another note, I still await the day Android has half the media codex as Windows Mobile. I miss CorePlayer. These crappy media players for Android are a real let down.

yep, I'm always thinking about what a complete waste this phone really is. Released with froyo, no dual core support drivers are crap and when/if we do ever get a fully functional gingerbread it will be at the end of its cycle and never really get its dual core support. Lg purposely gimped it with 512mb ram. A real shame. I fully expect to not ever see an official ICS release. All these dual cores being released with gingerbread ram requirements are going to be put to waste.

I honestly think 512mb of ram isn't a requirement for ICS. If that's the case then the Nexus S and Nexus One (which both have 512mb of ram) will be left in the past and I don't think Google is ready to stop yet. I foresee at least one more major update for the Nexus S (ICS) and then maybe Google will have more strict requirements. I think Google is more big on software rather than hardware. As for the G2x receiving ICS officially that will most likely not happen, especially since the G2x didn't make the expected sales LG were going for. Remember majority equals priority for these big name company's and majority don't own a G2x. Majority switched to the Sensation or whatever even exchange they can get. This will be my first and last LG phone unless the next line of Nexus is with LG (I hope its either HTC or Samsung for Super Amoled screen).

i talked to a guy today, who said he overheard someone on an airplane bound for zimbabwe, that he heard from his girlfriend in argentina that ice cream sandwhich would be out by end of sept. for the g2x. woohoo!!!!!!!!!!!
I dunno where you get your info from, but they are wrong! I was told by Santa Clause, who heard it from the Easter Bunny, who won the info in a bet with a leprechaun that was running away from a unicorn while chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, that Ice Cream Sandwich won't be available on the G2X until at least winter.
I ate an ice cream sandwich today...way better than gingerbread.

[Q] Would the NS4G get ICS?

Would the Nexus S 4G get ICS at the same time the non 4G version of the NS get ICS? Is there much of a difference from either versions that would delay the NS4G getting Icecream sandwich?
We're not fortune tellers, but the NS4G is the only device to officially have 2.3.5.
No one knows the rollout schedule for ICS. But you can assume that all the Nexus S variants will get ICS eventually. Most likely they will release ICS for the Nexus S variants close to the same time.

That doesn't really have any bearing on ICS. 2.3.5 was mainly to fix some issues with the 4G Nexus S, so the others aren't receiving it for what most say are extremely minor issues otherwise.

So there's not a whole lot of differences between the two variant phone that would delay ICS to the 4G version? Between the two phones the only difference is the wimax chip in the 4G version?
YES the Nexus-S 4G will get Android 4.0 "Ice Cream", we will be the second phone to get it behind the Nexus-Three obviously. I would expect it anywhere from two weeks or two months later, after the Nexus-Three launch, but we will get the official update first before any other phone. Now the gods here at XDA might be able to help us out, and get an official build on the N-S sooner, time will tell.
But high end phones like the EVO-3D and Galaxy S2, will get "Ice Cream" after the Nexus-S, I can say that much.
using old binaries as soon as one of them has it you can just make a sorta working on for the other
one would hope so, just to save face at least from tech blogs laughing at them fragmenting the market or whatever they do
