tmobile nexus s screen question quick answer needed. - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just bought a nexus s nib from the dev of pocketbooth really cool to meet the guy. away ways.
I am comparing it to the vibrant I have and the screen looks to be amoled but with less brightness and slightly less cool temp.
I wasnt aware of the tmobile verisions ever having anything other than amoled screens, the first time I held one at best buy it was neear identical however it could be the team whiskey rom screen temps are different or this is not a amoled screen but it sure doesnt look like a slcd as the blacks are completely black.
anyone confirm that it is only amoled with temps different looks like temp are just around medium not cool.

Google has updated the display driver since 2.3.3 in attempt to fix colour issues.

Dev section has kernels with voodoo color support use one that supports what ever rom you're using. Download voodoo app from market and u will be able to change back colors. Root required
but yea Google messed with colors and now look awful on samoled
can use this thread as a reference on what color settings to use with voodoo app

Mytouch4G screen color washed out and too bright.

Does anybody else notice that the screen colors on the MT4G are a little too high, its like the colors are too bright. I know that I can turn the brightness down, but right now I just have it set to automatic and I like that and I don't want to have to change that.
Does anyone know how to change the contrast on the MT4G? I just want to saturate the colors a little more. Anyone?

You can't do this on any android phone, rooted or not. Could you take a picture or maybe tell tmobile your problem, it might be an actual lcd problem.
Yeah I thought that I was the only one. Especially on this site when you view it from your mobile browser, the brown XDA heading is too bright and faded
I noticed it when I got my wife a MT4g. On her phone the colors are slightly more saturated and the blacks are slightly darker also. It is kinda bothering me now.
wanna see something crazy look at your phne for a minute and then look your computer the screen looks blue lol iyts true my mytouch colors are bright or must be my eyes

Maybe its related to the screen being used in the phone.

My wife is experienceing this as well. She went to look for the night time bedside clock app and found when the app turned the brightness down to 6 the entire screen went black, but at a brightness level of 7 the screen was dim, but still brighter than I would expect.
She commented on her Vibrant when the brightness was turned down it would go all the way down and have a black background, not a washed out dim gray background.
Hopefully there will be a fix coming.
I posted elsewhere that the screen, while obviously not as good as the Vibrant's, seemed to be just as good as that of the Nexus, Incredible, Eris, etc.
Well, I stand corrected. After reading your post, I downloaded 'Night Watch', and compared the look to that of my wife's Nexus. The Nexus does indeed appear to have a black background at 39% brightness, with vibrant green (color I chose) numbers. The MT4G appears more grey-ish, with less vibrant green numbers. Even when I reduced the brightness by another 5%, the MT4G was still grey-ish.
Now, I'm not sure if this is the screen hardware itself, or something in the contrast settings of the phone. It did bum me out a little, as I've been a pretty staunch supporter of this phone since I got it.
The dilemma is,
Do I decide to go back to a Vibrant for a nicer screen, but much fewer options? (not much chance of that)
Look to find another Nexus; and tak ea step back in terms of processor speed, ram, features, et.c (with the exception of the color trackball, which Nexus lords over ever other phone)
Wait until something better comes out; as there are no other android phones comparable to this one in terms of features, available by T-mo right now? (Wait? Really? Arggh!)
All in all, I'm very happy with this device. And maybe I'm just knee-jerking. But, in truth, it does bother me somewhat. Thoughts?

I know exactly what you mean, the blacks look grey and the reds look pink.
I think there is something wrong with the contrast balance in the software somehow, because it does seem like a nice screen, but those are just my thoughts.
I sincerely hope that this is the case. If so, perhaps some tweaking can be done in the settings, mch like, but nothng at all like, the registry settings change in WinMo phone, wherein the colors/contrast could be adjusted by assigning different numbers.
I realize that there is a huge difference between android and WinMo registry tweaks. But it's hard to believe they would simply included an inferior screen to go along with so many other hardware improvements.
its not an amoled display guys, it's never going to be completely black or have as high a contrast ratio as the nexus or vibrant.
Yeah, I know what kind of screen it is, and I know how others look in comparison, my point is though, my Mytouch3G had better colors. It just seems like something could be done via software.

It has only been out a couple of weeks, I would give it some time and everyone complain a little to T-Mobile and hopefully they can add it to a future OTA update.
I only had the MT4G for a night before returning it for a replacement (which is still in the mail), but I agree: The screen looked very washed out. It was so bad that I am now considering keeping my Vibrant.
I am not asking for SuperAMOLED-like quality, but something average would be nice... not low quality crap.
I'm starting to think there's production issues. The very first 2 units I saw had the washed out look. I saw one today that seemed fine. I went thru the menus and changed the backgrounds. Everything seemed much better on this one.
I wish I could compare them side by side, but these were in 2 different stores.
Thoughts?

I had been weary about the screen ever since I got mine last Wednesday. From reading reviews talking about how great the screen looked, and then mine was kinda... blah. First words in my mind when I turned it on was how washed out some of the colors looked.
I took mine back to T-Mobile tonight and swapped it out for a new and I have to say that there's a huge difference. Some of the colors are still a little off, but it looks like it's the app's icon and not the screen itself. Compare the newest YouTube app's red to the TasKiller's red, for instance.
Now to wait on the OTA so I can re-root this thing and clean it off.
I wish I had something to compare mine to. I went to the store, thinking I would compare mine to one of theirs. But it was a bust; as the screen looked exactly the same. So either mine is as good as the replacement you got, but just pales in comparison to the Nexus. Or it's washed out, the one in the store is washed out, and I'm still at square one. Unfortunately, there's no way for me to tell.
I took my MT4G back after running the Asphalt demo next to an Epic and Droid X. The colors were totally faded out and missing details seen on the other devices. The Epic is over-saturated and the X seems to split the difference, not to mention the size is awesome.
Hmm...
Well, being with T-mo, neither of those other two is an option for me. But, I'm thinking about it, and I'm starting to think our phones only seem to pale in comparison.
What I mean is, side by side, yes, they seem to be less-than-stellar. But when used on their own, they seem to be pretty alright... though obviously not as good as what our minds recall the others being.
If you look at a 60hz 1080p tv side by side with a 120hz edge-lit LED tv, yes, the original would look tame. But that's not to say that it doesn't look great on it's own.

Color calibration?

Is there any way to change the color calibration on the display? I want to raise the blue levels because I'm a bigger fan of a cool color tone and the whites on the g2x are more than an off white. (compared to my mt4g with good lcd where whites are bright white)
I have heard about the color calibration hack for the nexus one but I don't know if it'll work on the leaded gingerbread ROM from paul o'brien
If you don't know what I'm talking about go to the color settings on your computer monitor or tv and change from "cool" to "normal". The g2x is more like the normal setting while i like the cool setting better.
I posted a link already. There is a calibration tool in the Nexus One forums that you can use. I don't think the G2x needs it though. Mine looks natural.

I'm fine with all the colors except for white, I'm a bigger fan of a more bluish white like on the iphone.
I'll give the nexus one thing a try but i think a bunch of people who tried it on the g2x it force closed. Not sure about the leaked gb rom though so I'll try it and report back
the flash aborted because it says amend scripting is no longer supported since android 1.5?
I also tried installing both apk's and they both force close when I try to do anything
pretty sure you have to be on cm7 for it to work
Is it just my specific device or are the whites on this phone not really true white but more like off-white? If u compare it to the mytouch 4g with good lcd there's a big difference. Although this device does have truer blacks.

Every LCD is different. Even if the phones are the same model. Mine has a bit of a red tint when showing white but its only noticeable if I look at it next to my Vibrant.

I know different phones have different color tones but I just wanted to know if it was just my device where whites weren't true white because some people have been talking about a yellow or orange tint. I'm expecting a replacement phone to arrive next week so I guess I'll do a comparison when it arrives.
Looks fine to me, but really I'm all about resolution. Colors can vary and sounds can be medium quality and I probably won't notice a difference.

Meaning if you took a number of G2x and put them side by side none of them would be completely identical. So its not just you that has a slightly off screen.

Well thats why I want to change the color settings because the high levels of red in the whites are really bothering me.

[Q] Any way to improve pixelated fonts?

Hey Guy's,
I just recently purchased a Samsung Infuse 4G and retired my Sony Xperia X10. At first glance i fell in love with the huge screen and vivid colors of the Infuse, but after a day or so of actual use, i have come to realize that the pixel density leaves a bit to be desired. I have noticed that certain fonts appear to be pixelated likely due to the fact that the resolution on our screens is a bit too low for the physical size of the display.
So my question is this, is there a font pack of some sort that can be installed to improve the overal text readability on our devices? I noticed that some fonts look allot better then others. For example, the fonts i see in Handcent SMS look clean and smooth, but the fonts i typically see on my browser look jagged and pixelated.
Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated.
Alternatively, if there is a custom ROM that you can suggest that has taken this into account, i would love to hear about it. I will be keeping my phone stock for about a week or two to get a real feel for it so i have something to compare it to after i root and start installing custom ROMs
Trust me just leave it alone your eyes will adjust to it. It'll feel normal sooner or later. That's how I felt when I left The Captivate for this phone

Install Voodoo Screen Tuning from the market. You will be blown away. I no longer have any criticism on the readability of text.
Hello,
Try installing the Roboto font found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1309642 in combination with supercurio's Voodoo Screen Tuning app. Its a wonderful combo
I just installed the screen tuner and wow does it ever make a difference! I may also try the suggested font, but i must say i now feel a heck of allot better about buying the Infuse! It makesme wonder why samsung has not optimized the screen for infuse by default?? I'm glad that we have such amazing devs on this forum who can tackle these problems head on, thanks guys!

[9020t]Why is the color so different?

I currently is using a 9020t nexus s and I realize it has the washed out problem like many people even after I upgraded to OTA Android 4.0.4. I managed to fix the problem by rooting and voodoo color. However, recently, I was helping my friend to upgrade his Nexus S from 2.3.1 to 4.0.4. Immediately, I noticed that his color is much different and it is not wash out at all even after the update. The grey are darker and the color is darker in general. Do you guys know why there is such a difference in color even though we both update to the same stock rom and kernel? I am just curious. Thank you for the help in advance!
Many different batches of OLED based displays tend to look different. One display may look green, one blue, another accurate but saturated, as has been my experience with others phones. Whether it is different materials or material quality, hardware calibrations or manufacturing machinery we will probably never know.
Slight blandness is probably more noticeable due to the pentile screen on the Nexus S AMOLEDs when different settings are used as opposed to full RGB arrays in "xxOLED Plus" displays.
Thank you so much for the reply, so if I install the same rom/kernel and used the same setting on the voodoo color, both phone would look very similar ?
No, but the same phone will between ROMs. Voodoo would be relative to what is already shown and not an absolute change that would work between phones. However, they would likely look similar. I've not played with it myself (i have the LCD so I can't) though.
You are right, I tried install the same rom and set it with the same Voodoo setting, it is just not quite the same. I also notice that the one I have is brighter than my friend's in the same setting. Upon closer inspection, I realized that mine was a remanufacture model. Could it be possible that mine was actually a SLCD instead of AMOLED? Thanks for the help.
If voodoo colours works, it's amoled.

Do we have AMOLED screens?

I'm just wondering... I know the summary says LED3, but I'm wondering if they're mutually exclusive. The summary also says the One M8 comes in 16GB and I've never seen that, so I don't fully trust the summary to start with.
What I'm really asking is, am I doing my M8 any favors by using app settings that blacken as much as possible to save battery on AMOLED screens? In theory it sounds like it would work. But it seldom looks as good as other themes. And frankly, with a decent ROM/Kernel combination, this battery can pull two days, so, why not, you know? Still, I'm wondering if there's a benefit at all.
No it does not have a amoled

It's a super lcd screen.
32 gb phone is the only one available through Verizon. The 16 gb model is the base model for the international version. It definitely exists.
You can't get the screen as dark as an amoled screen and running dark themed apps won't save a significant amount of power compared to light themed apps. All you can do to save power display wise is to lower the brightness.
If you're S-OFF you can enable normal power saver which you can run all day and it not limit you to a few things like extreme power saver does.
If you've ever used a phone with an AMOLED display, it should be immediately apparent that the M8 doesn't have one. This is probably the nicest LCD I've used, but the saturation and contrast still can't compare to AMOLED. An LCD will use the same amount of power regardless of what it's displaying.
I never saw an Android device with a burned in screen until I had to borrow an SGS3 right before I got my M8. I'm an LCD fan these days. I'll take more honest colors over contrast. It's easier on my eyes. The only HTC I know of that came with an AMOLED was the original Incredible, and even then only for the first year or so. After that they began using Sony SuperLCD screens, of which the M8 has the 3rd generation of that screen.
