Does anybody else notice that the screen colors on the MT4G are a little too high, its like the colors are too bright. I know that I can turn the brightness down, but right now I just have it set to automatic and I like that and I don't want to have to change that.
Does anyone know how to change the contrast on the MT4G? I just want to saturate the colors a little more. Anyone?

You can't do this on any android phone, rooted or not. Could you take a picture or maybe tell tmobile your problem, it might be an actual lcd problem.
Yeah I thought that I was the only one. Especially on this site when you view it from your mobile browser, the brown XDA heading is too bright and faded
I noticed it when I got my wife a MT4g. On her phone the colors are slightly more saturated and the blacks are slightly darker also. It is kinda bothering me now.

Maybe its related to the screen being used in the phone.

My wife is experienceing this as well. She went to look for the night time bedside clock app and found when the app turned the brightness down to 6 the entire screen went black, but at a brightness level of 7 the screen was dim, but still brighter than I would expect.
She commented on her Vibrant when the brightness was turned down it would go all the way down and have a black background, not a washed out dim gray background.
Hopefully there will be a fix coming.

Well, I stand corrected. After reading your post, I downloaded 'Night Watch', and compared the look to that of my wife's Nexus. The Nexus does indeed appear to have a black background at 39% brightness, with vibrant green (color I chose) numbers. The MT4G appears more grey-ish, with less vibrant green numbers. Even when I reduced the brightness by another 5%, the MT4G was still grey-ish.
Now, I'm not sure if this is the screen hardware itself, or something in the contrast settings of the phone. It did bum me out a little, as I've been a pretty staunch supporter of this phone since I got it.
The dilemma is,
Do I decide to go back to a Vibrant for a nicer screen, but much fewer options? (not much chance of that)
Look to find another Nexus; and tak ea step back in terms of processor speed, ram, features, et.c (with the exception of the color trackball, which Nexus lords over ever other phone)
Wait until something better comes out; as there are no other android phones comparable to this one in terms of features, available by T-mo right now? (Wait? Really? Arggh!)
All in all, I'm very happy with this device. And maybe I'm just knee-jerking. But, in truth, it does bother me somewhat. Thoughts?

I know exactly what you mean, the blacks look grey and the reds look pink.
I think there is something wrong with the contrast balance in the software somehow, because it does seem like a nice screen, but those are just my thoughts.
I sincerely hope that this is the case. If so, perhaps some tweaking can be done in the settings, mch like, but nothng at all like, the registry settings change in WinMo phone, wherein the colors/contrast could be adjusted by assigning different numbers.
I realize that there is a huge difference between android and WinMo registry tweaks. But it's hard to believe they would simply included an inferior screen to go along with so many other hardware improvements.
its not an amoled display guys, it's never going to be completely black or have as high a contrast ratio as the nexus or vibrant.
Yeah, I know what kind of screen it is, and I know how others look in comparison, my point is though, my Mytouch3G had better colors. It just seems like something could be done via software.

It has only been out a couple of weeks, I would give it some time and everyone complain a little to T-Mobile and hopefully they can add it to a future OTA update.
I only had the MT4G for a night before returning it for a replacement (which is still in the mail), but I agree: The screen looked very washed out. It was so bad that I am now considering keeping my Vibrant.
I am not asking for SuperAMOLED-like quality, but something average would be nice... not low quality crap.
I'm starting to think there's production issues. The very first 2 units I saw had the washed out look. I saw one today that seemed fine. I went thru the menus and changed the backgrounds. Everything seemed much better on this one.
I wish I could compare them side by side, but these were in 2 different stores.

I had been weary about the screen ever since I got mine last Wednesday. From reading reviews talking about how great the screen looked, and then mine was kinda... blah. First words in my mind when I turned it on was how washed out some of the colors looked.
I took mine back to T-Mobile tonight and swapped it out for a new and I have to say that there's a huge difference. Some of the colors are still a little off, but it looks like it's the app's icon and not the screen itself. Compare the newest YouTube app's red to the TasKiller's red, for instance.
Now to wait on the OTA so I can re-root this thing and clean it off.
I wish I had something to compare mine to. I went to the store, thinking I would compare mine to one of theirs. But it was a bust; as the screen looked exactly the same. So either mine is as good as the replacement you got, but just pales in comparison to the Nexus. Or it's washed out, the one in the store is washed out, and I'm still at square one. Unfortunately, there's no way for me to tell.
I took my MT4G back after running the Asphalt demo next to an Epic and Droid X. The colors were totally faded out and missing details seen on the other devices. The Epic is over-saturated and the X seems to split the difference, not to mention the size is awesome.

Well, being with T-mo, neither of those other two is an option for me. But, I'm thinking about it, and I'm starting to think our phones only seem to pale in comparison.
What I mean is, side by side, yes, they seem to be less-than-stellar. But when used on their own, they seem to be pretty alright... though obviously not as good as what our minds recall the others being.
If you look at a 60hz 1080p tv side by side with a 120hz edge-lit LED tv, yes, the original would look tame. But that's not to say that it doesn't look great on it's own.
A lot of reviews I have viewed on the MT4G say that even though it has a normal LCD (or SLCD -- depending on who you ask), the colors are fairly "rich". This may just be the affect SAMOLED has had on me (I am coming from a Vibrant) but I hardly find the colors on the MT4G to be "rich" -- especially the whites.
I have attached a screenshot of Google.com from my MT4G; Looking at Google.com on the MT4G, the white is more off-white than it is real white.
Anyone else seeing this? I am not expecting SAMOLED quality (obviously) and the colors are not "poor", but they are nothing special either.
EDIT: I just realized attaching a screenshot proves nothing since the problem is with how the LCD on MT4G shows it rather than the page itself. In other words, the screenshot will look just fine if viewed from a different device. So I have removed the screenshot.
I'd have to agree that it's the SAMOLED affecting your judgment.
No screen, other than another SAMOLED or the fictitious SAMOLED2, can really compete.
The SLCD(or regular LCD, depending on your source, like you said) screen in the MT4G is essentially the standard in smart phones these days. What sets the MT4G apart is the internals, which are far superior to anything on the market, imo. Second-generation 1GHZ Snapdragon processor and 768 RAM is what I'm referring to.
Personally, I found the screen on my second MT4G to be on par with the G2, which I also place above my Nexus One's AMOLED. So basically, again in my opinion, SAMOLED > G2/SLCD = MT4G/SLCD? > Nexus One/AMOLED > Everything else
Second generation processor and 768 MB of RAM is nice, although the GPU is a bit inferior to that of the Vibrant (just had to throw that out there).
That said, could it just be my particular phone? I compared Google.com on my MT4G and my laptop too and there is definitely a difference in the whites.

Fully admit the Vibrant has a better GPU. There's tons of benchmarks to show it.
My first MT4G had a really seemed to have a washed out screen and I replaced it because of this fact, more or less.
When you had your screenshot attached, I pulled up Google.com and held it to the screen for comparison. But, like you noted when you removed it, it's being compressed through the interwebz then re-displayed on my desktop's screen so of course I saw a difference. That being said, I do think the screen on the MT4G is good. Is it better than other things currently on the market? Eh. Maybe. I think it's pretty standard, to be quite honest. It's the other internals, the build quality of the entire device itself, and the fact that I actually like SenseUI/mySense that won me over to keep the device.
The funny thing is I hate mySense/Sense -- I loved TouchWiz, haha. It really is TouchWiz/SAMOLED that really is holding me back from returning my Vibrant just yet... I am having hell of a time making up my mind.
For me it all comes down to TouchWiz + SAMOLED vs HSPA+ + FFC.
Decisions, decisions.
I whole-heartedly agree with you that the screen is nothing special. While I love my mytouch 4g, I admit that the screen is just average. There's been a lot of debate as whether the screen is slcd or not. I have to say it is a regular lcd after comparing it to the g2; while the mytouch 4g is brighter, the g2 is noticeably more saturated.

If I have the choice between a fantastic SAMOLED screen on a crappy samsung phone like the vibrant and a great device with a nice bright LCD like on the MT4G. I go for the MT4G. I absolutely don't care about SAMOLED. The screen is not a self purpose and people who are buying a phone solely because of a screen are crazy. I had the N1 and the AMOLED screen was too dark and never looked really sharp. I don't watch avatar on a phone (rediculous) and I don't play games (I am over 30;-) so if I have a bright and sharp screen I am satisfied.

To me it was the opposit. Holding the Nexus One next to the MT4G I thought the nexus had better color...the 4G looked washed out. I like watching videos when traveling and my first instinct was to send the 4G back and stay with the Nexus...especially since I had the Desire Sense on it. But, the MT4G has larger internal memory, 4G, etc... I kept the 4G and my son gets the Nexus.
I may be in the minority, but I hated the SAMOLED on the Vibrant. The white balance on that device was just awful. Whites were light blue/green. Having much warmer whites that are much closer to the standard is much nicer on the mt4g. Additionally, text was so fuzzy compared to the sharp, much more readable text on the mt4g. Lastly, the colors, while certainly vivid and rich are so far from realistic, it just looked silly. No way would a good calibration specialist worth his weight in salt would arrive at those curves. It's sort of like looking at a TV on the floor of a big box retailer like Best Buy. Apparently, those settings move their TVs, and based on feedback here, people love that HDR-like cartoonish appearance. Their saturation and contrast levels are maxed out, and simply don't provide a realistic picture. The only real advantage of the Vibrant was its ability to show inky dark blacks. That was fantastic.
Agreed. I've been trying to figure out what I hated so much about the Vibrant screen, and you just nailed it for me. Personally, I think my MT4G screen is excellent. There is a point where it's simply "more than good enough", and who cares after that?
I can honestly say that, after having this phone for a few days, it is the first phone I've purchased that is worthy of replacing my Nexus One (and I've bought pretty much every Android device out there that can run on T-Mobile's network). To me, *that* means something big. I bought the Nexus on Jan. 5, and it has taken over eleven months for somebody to finally put something better out.

I loved the SAMOLED screen on my Vibrant (now sold). However, that was the only thing I loved about that phone. I have to admit, when I got the MT4G and compared both phones side by side, I was slightly disappointed in what appeared to be lacking color saturation on the MT4G's display. However, after using the phone for a couple of days, not only did I begin to like the display and its extremely sharp resolution and text appearance, I forgot all about the SAMOLED.
This was probably aided by the fact that the MT4G is a phenomenally powerful device - in terms of performance, the Vibrant is not even in the same league.
I don't have a MT4G but I did play with one extensively in the store. At the time I had a Nexus 1 and Vibrant so I was a bit sad that the screen did look washed out compared to it, but when used by itself it was perfectly fine. And I do agree the colors look too oversaturated on the amoled screens as well, but the blacks are just so nice.
The thing that I do like about SLCD displays vs. amoled is the pixel layout allows for much sharper text, something I never got used to on amoled, I just dealed with it. For browsing and reading emails the MT4G screen or any SLCD for that matter is far superior than amoled. The iPhone 4's display... wow, nice sharp text. =(
So, I think there's one of two things going on with these phones. I just got my first mt4g on sunday. it came loaded with 2.2.1 and it came with a great quality screen. I had my buddy root it, and i got a little overzealous deleting bloatware and deleted "friendstream" which in turn caused the phone to never complete "syncing" and therefore i always had the syncing logo in the task bar. I took it back to the store and got a replacement....well this one came loaded with 2.2 and had a really washed out screen. I at first thought maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me....but it was so washed out, i couldn't take it any more....so I took it to another store (a busier store that would likely not be sitting on earlier builds). This one too came with 2.2.1 but also had a washed out screen...
So T-Mobile/HTC is clearly using differen't suppliers for these screens

I will say this, I've owned a Nexus one, a Vibrant and a g2 for a few days. ,(If/When you get a "Good" Screen) I think of all the screens this one may have the best comprimise of sharpness/contrast/color. While the Nexus and Vibrant at first glance look amazing...the text is grainy (screen door effect) and the colors are unrealistic...so when viewing some picture or video it looks like cartoonish. That said, if you get a Washed out screen....it's probably the worst of all three.
I will be going back to the store in a few days to try and exchange and get a good one again.
That's my 2 pennies.
PS, I'd also like to add...that yes...I set all of them to "auto brightness" so that was not a factor.
Follow up to my previous post. There is NOTHING in 2.2.1 that improves the screen quality. There is an obvious case of more than one manufacturer making the LCD's in these phones. Because after replacement this one came with 2.2 and has a better screen. Also, We opened 5 phones at the store and all of them had washed out colors until i finally said "let's try a plum one instead of black" and that one had a good screen with higher contrast ratio. So now I'm on a Plum MT4G...and while it's not my first choice....it's pretty cool and leaps and bounds above white or red. And the Picture Quality; Better blacks, richer colors and better viewing angles than the previous two I had.
I'd encourage anyone dissatisfied to return to the T-Mobile store you purchased and ask them to open up several, before processing the exchange so that you can get a good one. The easiest way to tell, is turn the phone slightly off angle....if it gets washed out, it's the bad one. If the colors stay rich then it's a good one. The Nexus live wall paper is also very telling on a good one as the colors pop more and the grey scale is far more defined... I will try and take a photo of mine next to a washed out one so You guys can see the difference as well, soon!

Quick question.. did you have a chance to compare the "newer" screen with the screen of a G2? I had the G2 for a few weeks and when the MT4G came out, I compared both phones at a tmobile store. The difference in the contrast and color was obvious. I wonder how the newer batch of MT4G screens compare now to the G2.
I used the G2 for about 4 days before going to the MT4G. But, I went back to the NEXUS ONE in between the two for about a week and a half so it wasn't an immediate comparison. But from what I can remember this "Good" MT4G is BETTER than the G2 in screen quality. But, the MT4G's with the poor screens couldn't stand up to the G2 at all, and certainly not to the N1.
But, I like the overall screen quality of the good MT4G's over all the phones I've had. Including the N1 & Vibrant.

Yes, I noticed before when my phone was on my desk and i got a text, i could read it while it was sitting there....then when i got the replacement phone i would have to pick the phone and face it toward me....now again with this "good screen" I can see the texts while it's sitting on the table.
I'm telling you folks, it's a night and day difference in Picture quality.
I think T-Mobile needed a ton of these for the holiday demand and HTC outsourced the screens from different manufacturers....and left some looking "Awesome!" and some looking " Meh? =/ "
My buddy tried to take pics at the store of his vs. one with the washed out screen, but it was difficult to tell with a phone camera, need a real digital camera to show it.
Maybe from here on in, for those of you claim there is a difference, please let us know where the "good" ones and "bad" ones were manufactured. Could be a pattern there. I believe this information can be found by the battery on the inside.
Mine does look good even contrast isn't "unlimited" because the screen is not AMOLED.
I thought everybody might want to hear about and give feedback on more unique ways to save squeeze more life out of their battery. I have been using Black Google Mobile at bGoog.com for a while now on my Android and it works awesome alongside my all black theme. It loads faster for me and it helps keep my phone bill down by reducing "bandwidth".

Interesting...I never knew that this existed. The reason why they claim that it's "Battery-saving" is because of the white-on-black--aka Night Mode. I like how there's no javascript and stuff. I'm totally gonna use this as my homepage now!!

You people do realize that the blackness in displayed image has no effect on power consumption (except on AMOLED screens) right?
Even if the content is black, the back light is still on and drawing power. Except may be in LCD TVs employing local dimming which I am pretty sure is not employed on mobile phone screens.

This information is 100% correct. You will achieve power savings ONLY IF you use an OLED screen, since each pixel is its own light source. LCD screens use backlights, polarizers, color filters, etc... the backlights are always on, and a "black" pixel is achieved by polarizing such that no light gets through for that pixel. For OLED, each pixel can turn itself on or off completely. That's also why OLED's contrast ratios blow LCD out of the water--they achieve true blacks.
Cool Black has always improved battery life on the Nexus!

I'm curious. Why is it phones are bigger with same crummy resolution as smaller? Fascinate has 800x480. Same as smaller ones. Thunderbolt even bigger but same resolution. I don't get it.
After seeing iPhone 4 nothing else comes close to as good looking screen quality I have seen. So it's hard for me to want anything else.
I'd prefer bigger screen but awesome screen. Bionic comes close but even still isn't as good. Bigger screen yet still worse res then iPhone. Thunderbolt even worse res.
I want a new phone but screen quality is big for me. I won't get iPhone for several reasons. Not sure what to get.
I got the fascinate last week. Screen looked ok but still didn't seem that great. Didn't like the bottom buttons only lit up *after* you touch them. That ticked me off. Battery sucked royally. Only a few hrs. Had to charge it twice within the first 36 hrs. Took phone back next day after I bought it.
I'm not sure what to do.

For saying that the nothing comes close to the iphone 4 screen is quite a bold claim... sure it has the highest ppi but a screen is not only ppi and there are android phones that has about almost the same ppi as the iphone 4 way before it comes out.
The thing is about resolution is to have a unified standard no matter what the size screen because it is just rescalling, but different resolutions requires gpu settings and software ones...too complicated
Android has 480p since the Iphones 3GS era and almost one year before the iphone 4 was out.and now the next step is 540p which will be standard this year so don't worry you get a qHD resolution + the awsome screen technologies that the iphone doesn't have and in differente sizes.
Meizu M9 has (I think) the same screen as an iPhone 4 so great quality and Android.. Although you'd have to ship one over from China
This should start changing with the next wave of phones. Atrix has 960x540, and the rumours say that the new HTC phones will have something similar. What remains to be seen is if Samsung can make some higher resolution SAMOLEDs. It does seem frustrating that screen sizes are getting larger but the resolutions are staying stuck on 800x480

The bionic has. 960x540 res I think. The screen on the thunderbolt is the same 800x480. I wish people would be able to see both right now. I wonder if the thunderbolt screen will look much better then fascinate and incredible.
I like thunderbolt being wider then bionic and how extremely fast it boots in a video i saw. Wish it was out already but just thinking the thunderbolt screen may not be all that. Hmm.

The thunderbolt screen if i m not wrong is the same as the DHD which is a SLCD, and for me it is one of the best screens out there, great and realistic colors, huge brightness and one of the most responsives screens, HTC annouced that the thunderbolt/inspire 4g/DHD whatever you want to call it, are the last High end smartphones that will have 480p as they ll be moving to qHD aka 540p, but that doesn't mean 480p is dead .
There are apps on the android market to change screen resolution, if you have an andriod phone. Try Root Tools from JRummy16. There are others, do a search, this one was just fresh in my mind.

Yes i used that when i had my HD2 + Android , but for now i m not missing with my DHD
It changes resolution? How? Does it make things look better by going to a higher res?
No. It changes the density. You can't add more pixels, but you can change the density.

what you change is the dpi the HD2 has like 216 ppi, but you can change it to 180ppi for exemple well it doesn't really change the densitie of your screen but how software shows on your screen

The net result will be like changing the resolution on your PC. Everything will appear smaller and you will have more stuff that will fit on your screen.
Meh, I played with an iPhone 4 today for a few seconds and I like it, I actually thought about getting a white one when it comes out, but the 3.5 inch screen is kinda putting me off.
The Captivate has a 4 inch screen and thats the perfect size for me, at least the smallest.

dont worry iphone has changed the resolution game. all phones will benefit from the bar they set with their retina screen
I like my new droid incredible I got yesterday. I can not imagine how good itd be with a much higher res. It looks great now.

What would happen if you set it to 1?
I currently got the HTC Desire HD and kinda love it. But it starts to get too slow, battery gets worse and so I thought about getting a new phone.
The HTC One S looks nice, perfect size, good performance, good camera and due to the AMOLED it looks like the battery last long enough as well.
But how does the AMOLED display quality look like compared to e.g. my Desire HD ? How abour reading from the display at sunny days?

I got it recently, chose it over OneX and S3 because of its size, and couldn't be happier with it. You won't be sorry if you get One S. Search similar threads for more info.

Ye I would get the S4. I am just curios about the AMOLED quality compared to other phones. Besides that it should be perfect for me
TBH I love my AMOLED. Colors are nice and sharp and its barely pixelated.

TBH to me it was straight out pixalated, I have an S3 & Amaze and no noticeable pixels anywhere. just my opinion

The display is great and one thing, which definitely deserves more praise rather than just being slated by a number of people and review sites. Sure the screen isn't as good in terms of sharpness and screen real estate compared to the GS 3, one X, GN and SE phones due to the 720P res. but the colours of it are superb and IMO better than the GN (too dull), GS 2 (too over saturated), SE phones (personally not really keen on their displays when it comes to the colours) and also the GS 3 screen, but the best thing about the one S screen is just how good it performs when in sunlight (as in sun shining right on the screen), I can see stuff (even on black backgrounds) without even having to squint my eyes (and that isn't even with 100% brightness, only like 70% brightness selected) where as with the GS 2 etc. I always have to cover it slightly with my hand in order to make a text or website etc. out. And with my S, there is no yellow/blue tints at all, no matter what brightness I put the mobile to, whites are extremely bright white (better than my dell U2311H), this will vary from unit to unit though.
IMO the desire HD has one of the worst displays ever, colours are extremely washed out, viewing angles are non existent, and it isn't that sharp either.
I do notice the pentile matrix, however, I only notice it when I have my face right up to the screen or am really concentrating on trying to spot the effects of it. The most noticeable areas I notice it are on the notification icons and white/grey text on black backgrounds.

I’ve griped about PenTile RGBG before on this panel and other SAMOLED displays, but I find the One S to be completely enjoyable in spite of having it thanks to two things. First, how well HTC has controlled the panel (no awful hues, weird white points, or dramatic shifts as you change brightness) - this is basically the best I’ve seen this particular panel, and until SGS3, the best I’ve seen AMOLED in general. Second, because HTC doesn’t appear to be applying any processing that applies sharpening (like Samsung’s mDNIe) to text.
How you feel about PenTile really is the final factor: it’s there, but I’ve slowly become accustomed to it after staring at it for so long. If you go back to the Nexus S days, I was one of the most outspoken critics because of how large those subpixels were. With small enough subpixels (below visual acuity), PenTile starts to make sense. In other news, HTC moving back to Samsung AMOLED for phones is an interesting move after supply issues forced HTC to SLCD with some earlier phones, here on the HTC One S however, it looks great.

Imo, I would get the OneS if I were you.
I also came from the DHD, an moved forward after the no update fiasco.
I am on pre-pay and did not want to sign a contract again, actually ever but that's another issue, so I shopped around for the OneS on sell in different places. I could not swing full retail so I looked for NIB phones that are turned over fast.
Well long story short is, I looked and looked for a slightly used phone and never scored one sadly, I would up grabbing a OneX NIB for under 400 and couldn't say no to that price.
However I still like an want a OneS, nice form factor coming from the DHD and really is a sharp looking phone.
Would I suggest one to my friends, in a heartbeat.
Get yourself a OneS an rock on.

Same here. One X is so awesome big Take One S S4 - great phone. But remember using a case when you order the black version, cause after some time the color in the edges turns silver...
