Anyone know if simply placing an st sim will enable everything?

ST is said to use AT&T/T-Mobile towers for their GSM (Verizon for CDMA), however ST sims are locked to work only for ST devices.

A few people here have done it. It requires an unlocked phone maybe? And changing of apns
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
Some people have done it with unlocked phones, but could never pick up the signal even though the sim was accepted.
As far as I know, just placing an ST sim in other phones wont work. You'll have to take extra steps like what akira mentioned
Here's how I did it:
- Purchase a ST Nokia e71 or Nokia 6790 for $200 and a $45 prepaid month
- Unlock your Inspire
- Activate your ST phone
- Put your ST SIM in your Inspire, put the Nokia in your desk drawer and keep it safe
- Calling will now work on the Inspire, but data won't, so connect to wifi.
- Download APN Backup & Restore from the market.
- Unzip the attached file and put it on your SD card. Instructions for APN Backup & Restore is below
- Any time you change the APNs, reboot your phone TWICE. I don't know why it needs to rebooted twice, but it does. Not a huge deal, so just do it.
APN Backup & Restore instructions, taken from Howardforums' member Kalinrs:
Here is how to insert the file in your phone:
1. Download and install the APN Backup and restore app.
2. Go to it and backup whatever APNs you have (it doesn't matter how many or how they are wrong). You do this, so that the app can create a folder on your internal memory for backups. This way you can put my file there. Once you back up, the following folder will be created. The folder is: /sdcard/APNBackupRestore
3. Now you can go to APN B&R again and Delete APNs.
4. Unzip the file I attached and then use a file manager or your computer to copy the "apns-MMSand3Gwork.xml" file and paste it into that "APNBackupRestore" folder. Once there you can go back to the program and hit restore and you should be able to see the file you inserted. Select file and hit ok.
5. Reboot the phone twice after that.
6. Once the phone is back up, go to your settings -> wireless -> mobile networks -> APNs and make sure you see both APNs - HOME and MMS. HOME should be the one that is selected although it probably shouldn't matter.
After this, your data and MMS should work perfectly. I'm currently getting between 2-5mb/s down, and about 2mb/s up, which is the usual AT&T speeds in my area.
Edit - Don't **** this up for everyone else. Your service will be cut off around 2GB of data, so don't abuse this to the point where they shut it off for everyone else
But I thought straight talk was unlimited data?

sounds like a lot of money to fork out for just a st card
It's unlimited data the same way T-Mobile has unlimited data, or Boost, or Virgin, etc are... There's a "don't abuse the service" limit that's not a set limit. Be smart and don't abuse it.

Sounds like using St is pointless then.

It's pointless to pay $45/month for something you have to pay $115/month for on AT&T? Somehow, I think not... Honestly, I don't see how you could rationally make that statement.
Don't abuse unlimited for 45 is better than 2gb for 100

It really depends on your situation. For someone with a single line it likely makes sense but for my family plan it would cost almost the same per month and I would give up phone subsidies, nice warranty support, etc. Subsidies alone amount to about 15/mo/line, and that assumes you never talk them into an early upgrade.
Exactly I have a family plan and already only pay $35/no.

using straight talk on any unlocked phone is awesome, but like newter55 said, depends on the situation. Basically ideal for someone using a single line and does not want to be tied down to a contract. If you're using a family plan, prices are pretty cheap where you dont have to go through all this. Secondly, you dont necessarily have to buy a $200 e71 or 6790 from the store. Mind you its a lot easier if you do this, but you can buy a $50 parts phone on ebay, as long as the IMEI is clean and not tied to an account.

It has to be the unbranded expensive nokia.
The e71 is available for $99 now. I found this thread as I'm looking to hook up my Samsung Galaxy Note to Straight Talk. I'll have my e71 on Tuesday 12/14/2011 so I'll post back regarding how it went. Hope they haven't fixed this hole!

Hi. As the title says. I have just bought my dad a g1 from ebay, he has a tmobile payg sim card with no data plan, I have a g1 with a g1 data plan, if he uses my sim card to activate it will he still get the ability to take and make calls?
Thanks joe
As far as I know, he'll need to use data to activate it as he will need to sign on with his GMail account.
g1 without data plan
What do you meen by data, he will use my sim to aactivate and his gmail to sync data, and after that he will swap to his payg tmob sim card, so will he get phone call ability,
Thanks joe
yeah he would be able to activate it with your sim card. But once he puts in his sim card, the data charges may start to come up. I would say before you put in his sim card, delete the apn settings. that should kill any data from working so it is then just a phone. But the wifi can still work. or have his plan upgraded to a flexpay with the g1 service. You dont need a contract with that..
Yup that's gud, so deleat the apn's to stop tmob from charging and just use as normal g1 without 3g or grps or edge, ps how do I deleat apns
I am sure thats how it works. you can get "NetMeter" from the marketplace. that will tell you if there is anything accessing the data plan.
to remove apn go to
menu --> wireless controls --> Mobile Networks --> Access Point Names in there you will want to click on T-Mobile US - T-Mobile US 800 and remove the APN. Assuming you are in the US.
Thanks for quick reply, I'm in uk but I'm sure that will be the same but for tmob uk. Thank allot
If I was you I would post to get some feedback, it is a big post all about the APN settings. they should know more then me about it all.

Hello everyone,
I got my Captivate yesterday shipped from letstalk.com. Everything with it has been working well, except I don't get a data connection with it at all, except WiFi.
As instructed by the sticker on the box the sim I am using is from my old phone, a Samsung SGH-A707 flip phone. The sim is a little over two years old. When the sim is in that phone, I get a 3G icon immediately.
I have tried turning the phone off, leaving it for several minutes, turning it back on again. Also removing the battery.
When I go to Settings, Wireless and Networks, Mobile Networks, Access Point Names, I see ATT WAP listed. I have tried adding another Access Point Network based on settings seen elsewhere in this forum which differed slightly by specifying a username and password, and not having the proxy and port set. But selecting this other APN has no change.
When I go to Network Operators all I see is an unselectable 'Default Setup' item. Others have reported seeing network connection information there, can anyone confirm on their Captivate?
Checking or unchecking 'Data roaming' does not seem to have any effect.
Under Settings, About Phone, Status the Mobile Network Type is listed as 'HSDPA' but Mobile Network State is 'Disconnected'.
LetsTalk are sending me a new SIM to try, but since I get a 3G connection on my old phone my suspicion is that this is a phone problem.
Does anyone have any other ideas though? Any help would be much appreciated.
Wow well you found something I hadn't yet. There was some talk about whether the captivate did hsdpa or not.. and according to the setting you looked at, it does. In that setting does it show your network is on aT&T? You shouldn't have to create a new APN, the default one should work. Sure you don't have the phone in airplane mode? I'm sure that's a stupid question, just asking.
If you don't have a 3G sim card I hear 3G wont work. You can get a new sim from ATT for free. Oh and about hsdpa ATT disables that Icon and uses a 3G one. I seen a test somewhere with two dif phones one with a 3G icon and one with the H getting the same speeds.

Nope, not in airplane mode, but thanks for checking, I'd rather you'd assume I was stupid than not ask me the question!

It is a 3G sim, at least that's what it is labeled as. Like I said I (apparently) got a 3G signal on my old phone. And a new sim is on the way.
on the sim does it say 3G with flames around it lol (thats how my last sim was and it was 3G)
I went to the ATT store to get my captivate. I had an old sim ATT logo with flames that worked in a N1, N97, Bold 9700 and iPhone. I too showed no 3G. They had to replace my sim and it started working. They couldn't explain it.

Great, that gives me some hope the new sim that is on the way could fix it, thanks!
I had this problem as well. This fix worked for me:
Settings > Wireless and network > Mobile Networks
Check both boxes
- Use packet data
- Data roaming
ATT / Captivate Android 2.2
Hope this helps,
Did you find a solution for this? I'm having the exact same problem with my Captivate. No 3G icon and no packet data connection or mms. When I try to go to a page it immediately gives me the "not found: check your data connection" page, and when I try to send a mms, the 3G icon appears like if it was trying to connect and send it and then disappears when the message fails to send.
I just updated to 2.2 today and I no longer have 3G as well.
just an FYI as long as wifi is turned on you will not see the 3g icon.
I have noticed that when you turn wifi off you generally will not see the 3g icon until you do something with the phone that requires data connections
Turn off wifi and try opening a website via browser...the 3G icon should pop-up automatically at that point

Hello sir, I tried this and now i have 3G(icon popped up and internet/mms works) but am i incurring roaming charges?
For me even that's not working, I think my stupid phone is broken.
When I got a refub'ed Captivate for my partner via AT&T online store since it was only $49, I followed the instructions that came on the box, and everything worked except no 3G/data. So thinking that it might be because of a refurb'ed unit, I called AT&T. They told me to bring it into a corp office store. Fortunately, there's one right down the street from me. I took it in, they fiddled with it for about an hour, including swapping 3 different SIMs, and told me that it was a defective phone. I asked then how do I get a replacement. The rep told me to contact cust service for them to ship a replacement out and it'll include instruction to ship the defective one back since they can't replace refurb unit there at the store. So I went out to my car, called the cust service. The cust service rep told me that I have to send the defective one in first before they'll send me a replacement. I got angry and I went right back in the store, grabbed the rep that was helping me out and told him to please talk to the cust service rep to work things out because I'm not leaving the store until it's resolved. So they talked on the phone for about another 30 min. Then they hung up. The rep fiddled with it for another min, then handed me the phone and the 3G/data was working. Appearantly it was the way that the phone was registered with the system, something was out of whack and 3G/data was not available for that phone line. I then recalled that when I ordered the phone from AT&T, I got an email with instructions that I had to follow, which I did, then I followed the instructions that came with the box. I didn't think much at the time, but it seems like the instruction was telling to do the same thing as the email's instruction was except it was via a slightly different way. So I think I might have inadvertly register the phone twice. In any case, when that happens, 3G/data is not available and yet, the reps checking in the system found the account was setup correctly with the proper plans, changed plans, swapped SIMs, and came to the conclusion of defective phone when the phone was perfectly fine. I don't know if this will help any one. But if your phone is not flashed or rooted, you might want to have AT&T check your account and phone registration.
Go to Settings -> Wireless and network -> Mobile networks -> Access Point Names. Inside that option go to Menu -> Reset to default. (Reboot your phone)
Worked for me, i have a samsung captivate thats rooted running on 2.2 froyo and i was deleting some user data, believe it was dialer data (do not delete that, it also deletes your texts) and i all of a sudden my internet stopped working,i tried every setting and i even think there weren't any APN in the list of APNs because of deleting rampage, so i reset my phone and after that i reset the APN back to default settings and rebooted my phone and it worked. For some of you guys, if it still has an APN(the cingular one) in the list of APNs then all you have to do is reset it back to default by clicking menu with the menu button on your phone and click reset. It should work.

Dude, thank you so much !
(MODs: Please excuse if this is in the wrong place. I am currently only working with the Atrix 2 after ICS so I didn't want to push this on anyone else with other devices unless someone could confirm this works across all ICS ATT prepaid devices)
This is for those who would like to use their Atrix 2 ICS (probably any other ICS device) on AT&T prepaid (Pay as You Go) service.
I was using a 3G Moto Bravo for years with the $50/month unlimited talk/text prepaid plan with $25 data plan.
After purchasing the Atrix 2 and upgrading to OTA 2.3.6, I was informed by ATT cust. care that "4G Devices will never be compatable with prepaid service."
I used APN Backup and Restore, to backup and delete all APNs and added the APN below for flawless 3G ONLY data and MMS.
After upgrading to the ICS leak, I found out ther ICS will not allow APNs to be edited by 3rd party apps, and the user still cannot remove the stock APNs, even if rooted.
SOLUTION (REQUIRES ROOT):
1.Purchase Root Explorer from the Play Store.(there may be free solutions to view/edit .db files. let me know so I can update this)
2. Make a backup of: data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
3.Purchase SQLite Editor from the Play Store
4. Remove all 'records' from: data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
5. Go home -> Settings -> More -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names -> New APN
6. Enter these settings for your new (only) APN:
Code:
Name: ATT
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: Not Set
Port: Not Set
Username and password are blank
Server: Not Set
Mmsc:h t t p : / / m m s c . c i n g u l a r . c o m (remove spaces)
Mms proxy: w i r e l e s s . c i n g u l a r . c o m (remove spaces)
Mms port: 80
Mcc: 310
Mnc: 410
Authentication type: Not Set
APN type: default
(please note that "Not Set" means that you do not put any data in this field.)
This may require a phone restart in order to work, but you should at least be able to access 3G data over a prepaid account. NOTE: You must have any data package for this to work. The "unlimited data" that is included in the plan does not apply to smartphones.
This is my first post, so I apologize in advance if I have broken any forum rules. I simply could not find a solution to my problem anywhere in internet land, and I wanted to prevent others from spending the 6 hours I did to get this working, or being totally disappointed to learn their new 4G device will "never be capable of running on prepaid networks". This is a lie ATT uses to make money. I would be happy to edit the post to clarify or help anyone who would like more details.
Thanks for the post!

I wish it would have been that easy. That was the first thing that I tried. (Many different ways and combinations)
I have some similar issues with customers whenever I worked for an AT&T authorized reseller, but non android devices.
However, in this case, either the network lock or some other policy in Android prevents the removal of the existing APN,s and upon entering a new APN and rebooting, the APN would disappear.
I would not have gone through a half a day's work to get this functioning properly if it would have been that easy. I'm not 100 percent sure exactly what is going on but I will give my best under standing of the situation. I was using an AT&T branded stock Atrix 2. I have been using my AT&T prepaid SIM card in a 3G device. Upon moving to AT&T SIM card to the Atrix 2, it automatically loaded 3 APNs from the Android telephony database. Those 3 have the lock symbol next to them and could not be edited or deleted, nor would a new manually entered APN stay after a reboot. when I was on Gingerbread I was able to use APN backup and restore to delete all records in the database, and only then did it allow me to add a new 1 by using the "add new" button.
. My experience with using another Gsm provider similar to straight talk, was that whenever I insert a SIM card I noticed that there were no APNs in the device by default for that network. This meant that I was allowed to add a new APN with no problem.
So, depending on if your device is branded by a particular carrier and or if android has existing APNs in its database for the service provider you are using you may have not had any trouble at all.
The conclusion I'm coming to is that you can normally just add a new APN unless there is a conflict such as the AT&T modern vs legacy access point names.
I only hope that this post will not get in anyone's way, and possibly might prevent someone hours of misery or giving up.
Ohhhh okay. I see what you're saying now. Gotcha

I've had my wife's Atrix 2 (on ICS leak, of course) on H2O and Net10, and both times all I had to do was add the APN normally. The APN should be att.mvno though, and get rid of the mms proxy and port, those can actually make MMS *not* work. Just make sure you name it something other than ATT or any of the listed APNs.
APN issue
How do I remove the following:
Remove all 'records' from: data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
I was able to fine the above path using root explorer, but when I run SQLite Editor I am not able to see above file that you asking to remove.
HTC Rezound- Root with S-ON
Thank you
i deleted all entries, and the pre locked AT&T APNs are now gone, but there are no options to add any new APNs.
Is there a way to add an APN manually or restore the option to add an APN?

2. Make a backup of: data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
3.Purchase SQLite Editor from the Play Store
4. Remove all 'records' from: data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
5. Go home -> Settings -> More -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names -> New APN
6. Enter these settings for your new (only) APN:
Code:
Name: ATT
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: Not Set
Port: Not Set
Username and password are blank
Server: Not Set
Mmsc:h t t p : / / m m s c . c i n g u l a r . c o m (remove spaces)
Mms proxy: w i r e l e s s . c i n g u l a r . c o m (remove spaces)
Mms port: 80
Mcc: 310
Mnc: 410
Authentication type: Not Set
APN type: default
(please note that "Not Set" means that you do not put any data in this field.)
This may require a phone restart in order to work, but you should at least be able to access 3G data over a prepaid account. NOTE: You must have any data package for this to work. The "unlimited data" that is included in the plan does not apply to smartphones.
This is my first post, so I apologize in advance if I have broken any forum rules. I simply could not find a solution to my problem anywhere in internet land, and I wanted to prevent others from spending the 6 hours I did to get this working, or being totally disappointed to learn their new 4G device will "never be capable of running on prepaid networks". This is a lie ATT uses to make money. I would be happy to edit the post to clarify or help anyone who would like more details.

i deleted all entries, and the pre locked AT&T APNs are now gone, but there are no options to add any new APNs.
Is there a way to add an APN manually or restore the option to add an APN?

Did you try editing the apn.conf in /system/etc ?
You should be able to add/remove any apn you like, once you're done go to mobile network settings > access point names then hit the menu button and reset to default. That should load the apns from your apn.conf file and hopefully you'll be good to go.

Great seems to have worked one way or another. Thanks! I managed to add a new APN (straight talk) and data seemed to work for a few minutes, but after powering down and powering up, data has once again cutoff and will not come back on.
The 4G symbol is there but it won't turn blue or show any data transmission. I've tried a factory reset and add/delete the APN that worked, but still can't seem to get the data to go up or down anymore. Calls and regular SMS still work.
Pretty sad over that tease after days of banging m head against the wall...:crying:
Any ideas anyone?

Are your apns still set to what they should be? Have you tried turning of your wifi and sending yourself a mms msg? That's usually the best way to test whether apns are working or not.

Yeah, the APNs are the correct APNs. MMS won't send or receive. I actually unlocked the phone and played with the settings and that seemed to fix things. I though the phone had somehow relocked itself, but other carrier SIMs seem to work in the phone now.
The display is showing 4G access but there is no data transmission. Even after deleting the APNs the 4G symbol does not disappear and readding it has no affect.
It was working for a bit just yesterday, but I cant seem to get the phone to transmit any data up or down since then.

What settings did you mess around with? Also, a straight to the point solution would be to call the provider and get the proper apn settings (if you haven't already). If your 4G is lit up, but you can't push or pull data, then you might have an auth value wrong, or a proxy wrong, etc. If you haven't already, call and get the apns straight from the source.
Hello
I have a Verizon Samsung Galaxy SIII (I535) with the Android 4.4.2 and the VRUDNE1 Build (I535OYUDNE1 Baseband). I got the Data and voice Roaming Package when I went to Europe. The voice part worked fine but the Data roaming sucked big time. Since you only get 100 MB (at 3G only), you follow their advise to reduce mobile data. Well I could not get reliable Internet access, even if I put the phone back up to full mobile data. I was using it with Maps, Yelp and TripAdvisor .
I then decided to buy an Internet-only SIM card in Germany, I could now get Internet access but I got the stupid message about the SIM card not being valid and the APN data had to be manually entered even when putting back the Verizon SIM card, which was a pain.
Now the phone is out of contract and not used with Verizon. I want to make it as my travel phone and be able to automatically load APN data and get rid of the SIM card message.
I see a couple of websites that claim that there are new easier methods to root the phone using towelroot.
Does anyone knows if towelroot will work with my current SIII?

Towelroot will work with an i535 on NE1, I bought a used, unrooted device a month ago and successfully rooted it. But, rooting will not automatically change APNs when you swap sims, I don't think.

No, but they I can use Apps that have the APN data but require root access. The other thing that would be nice is getting the RESET APN activated but not critical.
I had the impression that some of the SIM cards had a utility (or done through the activation) to set the APN data automatically. Need to test it thought

I've never changed SIMs, so I don't know if they have such a utility. I recall some of the the US pre-paid carriers supplying their APN settings packaged with the card for users to set. (StraightTalk comes to mind.) Since haven't needed to change APNs I don't know about the Apps you mentioned either.
Looks like I should have confirmed Towelroot working and not added any additional comment, you seem to have the rest worked out. BTW, let me know if you don't have a working copy of TowelRoot.
Hey guys, I’ve recently entered the android headunit world and purchased a android 10, 10.1” joying headunit (octa-core 1.8ghz, 6gb ram 720p).
The headunit is fantastic and exceeds my expectations in every way, except the 4G mobile data function doesn’t work.
I’m from Aus, so I’m using a verified working 4g mobile broadband Telstra sim that is a GSM type (which joying says is compatible).
The unit detects the SIM as it should, identifies it as a Telstra sim, shows full 4G signal in the top bar however it has no data stream.
I have the mobile data function enabled, roaming enabled, no data saving features turned on and have made sure to set all my apps to unrestricted access.
The interesting thing is, if I turn the headunits hotspot feature on, and use the units 4g network as a hotspot and connect my phone to it, everything works perfectly and it shows a perfect data stream.
However the unit itself cannot use its own data.
I have followed all of the instructions given here:
Android car stereo, Android 10.0 Head unit
How to solve the 4G problem on Joyin --> How to solve the 4G problem on Joying head unit? Following ideas are for solving the 4G problem when there i
www.joyingauto.com
But seeing as how the unit can actively stream 4g data via the hotspot function, there doesn’t seem to be an issue with SIM card settings or anything hardware related.
Has anyone come across this or have any idea what I should do next?
(Let me know if you need any unit details)
I don't know if this will help because you said your hotspot works but have you checked your APN (access point names) settings to see if there are two options to switch between?
There was only one in there which was the default automatic setting. But I figured that if the headunit could still send and receive data via hot spot to another device that the APN must have been correct?

Yeah, that's what I would have figured too. But I'm not an expert. Is there a DNS setting you could change? Perhaps add a custom DNS hostname such as dns.quad9.net ? I'm just guessing here.
I’ll have another look tonight but I don’t remember seeing any settings to change the DNS host name.
I was able to hotspot data just fine however the headunit had no internet.
Verify that the acces point names (APN) are set correctly. I had to copy the settings from my phone (using telstra) and apply them to the headunit.
This can be done by going to Mobile Networks > Access Point Names > [first one in list]
I had to change APN to telstra.wap and APN Protocol to IPv6. Also, there's a bug where the text is white on the input box. Have to select it to read it.
This worked with both the newer Android 10 (universal 10.1") and older Android 8 (Honda acord kit) on telstra data sims
Absolute legend, thanks mate.
I’ll try that tomorrow and see how it goes!
Thought I’d let you know it worked a dream, just had to change the apn and the protocols.
Thanks again!
I ordered a JY-UQD11N6G about 10 months ago and since then I have tried EVERYTHING that has been suggested here and by Joying. I've tried the universal build from FYT from this very informative post. The head unit recognizes the SIM and properly populates the APN data, but for some reason the time on the device sets back to the build time and date of the ROM every time the device reboots. I have also deleted the prepopulated APNs and created a new APN according the information on my phone when the SIM is inserted and functional which corresponds to the information here.
It does get (or keep) the right time zone, but it will not keep a persistent time through a reboot with a consistent power source.
Joying has sent me an unreleased ROM that doesn't fix the issue. I've tried different external antennae and I've torn the device apart to ensure that the internal antennae are properly soldered to the carrier board (they are). At this point I'm tired of paying $30/mo for a line I can't use.
I just noticed two one pixel wide green lines vertically traversing the LCD, but before I request a warranted replacement, is there anything else I should try?
I tried 4 different SIM cards. T-Mobile pre-paid didn’t word. The head unit recognized the card and everything looked right but no data. T-Mobile post-paid card taken straight out of a display phone in the store worked perfectly, but the cheapest plan was $40/month, and that’s too much. The Verizon card I took out of my iPad and tried did the same as the pre-paid T-Mobile card.
The 4th one I got is from Mint Mobile. Since they use the T-Mobile network, I thought it was worth risking $45. From their website I bought a SIM card with the 4GB phone plan at $15/month for 3 months. It works perfectly! After 3 months I can renew the plan for 12 months and stay at $15/month. 4GB is more data than I will ever use in a month just streaming my music, navigating and doing a few other things, like checking weather/weather radar.
Go with Mint Mobile. It may fix your data issues.

I tried Mint and had the same positive experience, and a Visible (Verizon mvno) card did not work.
But it had bars and showed me an lte connection, it just didn't give me any data. Apn settings were blank, but also wouldn't let me change them, oddly. I'd like to try again as I'm sitting on a visible sim for the next two months that would be cool to use but wondering why some carriers work and others don't, even if they are the same carrier (mvno vs non)?
I have Verizon working on mine, you have to add the APN settings manually via an app from the playstore. However....the device is unknown to verizon so they keep adding it as a phone to my account....for like $50+ a month...I told them i just want data and it should be classified as a connected device.

what provider? what are they charging you for on your account (device type)?
I haven’t used the data service for a while since I started just using apple car play, however my Carrier was Telstra (Australia) and it was something like $15 a month for a
2 GB 4g data sim.
At least as far as I can remember, it did have a mobile number associated with it so I think they were classifying it as a phone plan.

What’s the APN app you got from play store?
I used an app called AddAPN on the Playstore for my Joying and it worked well.
AddAPN - Access the Add APN se - Apps on Google Play
Brings up the Add APN page directly without going through settings
play.google.com
Because the settings app doesnt allow access to edit them...the app edits the apn information since the stock settings app doesnt allow this for some strange reason..
