Solution: Prepaid APN change after ICS upgrand - Motorola Atrix 2

(MODs: Please excuse if this is in the wrong place. I am currently only working with the Atrix 2 after ICS so I didn't want to push this on anyone else with other devices unless someone could confirm this works across all ICS ATT prepaid devices)
This is for those who would like to use their Atrix 2 ICS (probably any other ICS device) on AT&T prepaid (Pay as You Go) service.
I was using a 3G Moto Bravo for years with the $50/month unlimited talk/text prepaid plan with $25 data plan.
After purchasing the Atrix 2 and upgrading to OTA 2.3.6, I was informed by ATT cust. care that "4G Devices will never be compatable with prepaid service."
I used APN Backup and Restore, to backup and delete all APNs and added the APN below for flawless 3G ONLY data and MMS.
After upgrading to the ICS leak, I found out ther ICS will not allow APNs to be edited by 3rd party apps, and the user still cannot remove the stock APNs, even if rooted.
SOLUTION (REQUIRES ROOT):
1.Purchase Root Explorer from the Play Store.(there may be free solutions to view/edit .db files. let me know so I can update this)
2. Make a backup of: data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
3.Purchase SQLite Editor from the Play Store
4. Remove all 'records' from: data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
5. Go home -> Settings -> More -> Mobile Networks -> Access Point Names -> New APN
6. Enter these settings for your new (only) APN:
Code:
Name: ATT
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: Not Set
Port: Not Set
Username and password are blank
Server: Not Set
Mmsc:h t t p : / / m m s c . c i n g u l a r . c o m (remove spaces)
Mms proxy: w i r e l e s s . c i n g u l a r . c o m (remove spaces)
Mms port: 80
Mcc: 310
Mnc: 410
Authentication type: Not Set
APN type: default
(please note that "Not Set" means that you do not put any data in this field.)
This may require a phone restart in order to work, but you should at least be able to access 3G data over a prepaid account. NOTE: You must have any data package for this to work. The "unlimited data" that is included in the plan does not apply to smartphones.
This is my first post, so I apologize in advance if I have broken any forum rules. I simply could not find a solution to my problem anywhere in internet land, and I wanted to prevent others from spending the 6 hours I did to get this working, or being totally disappointed to learn their new 4G device will "never be capable of running on prepaid networks". This is a lie ATT uses to make money. I would be happy to edit the post to clarify or help anyone who would like more details.

Thanks for the post!

Ummm or go to the apns and Menu, add new, save done.
This is entirely unneeded. I use straight talk just fine and all I did was add an APN same with att prepay.

I wish it would have been that easy. That was the first thing that I tried. (Many different ways and combinations)
I have some similar issues with customers whenever I worked for an AT&T authorized reseller, but non android devices.
However, in this case, either the network lock or some other policy in Android prevents the removal of the existing APN,s and upon entering a new APN and rebooting, the APN would disappear.
I would not have gone through a half a day's work to get this functioning properly if it would have been that easy. I'm not 100 percent sure exactly what is going on but I will give my best under standing of the situation. I was using an AT&T branded stock Atrix 2. I have been using my AT&T prepaid SIM card in a 3G device. Upon moving to AT&T SIM card to the Atrix 2, it automatically loaded 3 APNs from the Android telephony database. Those 3 have the lock symbol next to them and could not be edited or deleted, nor would a new manually entered APN stay after a reboot. when I was on Gingerbread I was able to use APN backup and restore to delete all records in the database, and only then did it allow me to add a new 1 by using the "add new" button.
. My experience with using another Gsm provider similar to straight talk, was that whenever I insert a SIM card I noticed that there were no APNs in the device by default for that network. This meant that I was allowed to add a new APN with no problem.
So, depending on if your device is branded by a particular carrier and or if android has existing APNs in its database for the service provider you are using you may have not had any trouble at all.
The conclusion I'm coming to is that you can normally just add a new APN unless there is a conflict such as the AT&T modern vs legacy access point names.
I only hope that this post will not get in anyone's way, and possibly might prevent someone hours of misery or giving up.

Ohhhh okay. I see what you're saying now. Gotcha

I've had my wife's Atrix 2 (on ICS leak, of course) on H2O and Net10, and both times all I had to do was add the APN normally. The APN should be att.mvno though, and get rid of the mms proxy and port, those can actually make MMS *not* work. Just make sure you name it something other than ATT or any of the listed APNs.

APN issue
How do I remove the following:
Remove all 'records' from: data/data/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
I was able to fine the above path using root explorer, but when I run SQLite Editor I am not able to see above file that you asking to remove.
HTC Rezound- Root with S-ON
Thank you

i deleted all entries, and the pre locked AT&T APNs are now gone, but there are no options to add any new APNs.
Is there a way to add an APN manually or restore the option to add an APN?

Did you try editing the apn.conf in /system/etc ?
You should be able to add/remove any apn you like, once you're done go to mobile network settings > access point names then hit the menu button and reset to default. That should load the apns from your apn.conf file and hopefully you'll be good to go.

Great seems to have worked one way or another. Thanks! I managed to add a new APN (straight talk) and data seemed to work for a few minutes, but after powering down and powering up, data has once again cutoff and will not come back on.
The 4G symbol is there but it won't turn blue or show any data transmission. I've tried a factory reset and add/delete the APN that worked, but still can't seem to get the data to go up or down anymore. Calls and regular SMS still work.
Pretty sad over that tease after days of banging m head against the wall...:crying:
Any ideas anyone?

Are your apns still set to what they should be? Have you tried turning of your wifi and sending yourself a mms msg? That's usually the best way to test whether apns are working or not.

Yeah, the APNs are the correct APNs. MMS won't send or receive. I actually unlocked the phone and played with the settings and that seemed to fix things. I though the phone had somehow relocked itself, but other carrier SIMs seem to work in the phone now.
The display is showing 4G access but there is no data transmission. Even after deleting the APNs the 4G symbol does not disappear and readding it has no affect.
It was working for a bit just yesterday, but I cant seem to get the phone to transmit any data up or down since then.

What settings did you mess around with? Also, a straight to the point solution would be to call the provider and get the proper apn settings (if you haven't already). If your 4G is lit up, but you can't push or pull data, then you might have an auth value wrong, or a proxy wrong, etc. If you haven't already, call and get the apns straight from the source.

Telus APN settings don't work

I used:
APN: sp.telus.com
No username/password
MMS APN: sp.telus.com
MMSC: http://aliasredirect.net/proxy/mmsc
MMS Proxy: 74.49.0.18:80
Tethering APN: isp.telus.com
I can make calls and send text messages fine but these APN information don't work. I have a 500mb data plan.
Do any fellow Telus users know what I'm doing wrong
surly someone knows how to help me. I can't use this phone without data..
Those settings worked for me but I have a RETARDED data usage now.
Data Usage 77522 Kilobytes $757.03
I called customer support and from what there telling me (they can't say much) I have the wrong APN settings.
And yes, I have a 500mb data plan. I guess ill keep looking.
I am trying to get my rogers iPhone onto Telus now and I am close .. got everything but the data plan working and cant find the APN info either.
Gonna try talking to Telus and see what they say.
Those settings worked for me but only after i installed a custom profile and editing the settings manually. (only after this profile installation was i able to make it work)
1) go to http://www.unlockit.co.nz and create and install a custom profile (from your phone through wifi)
you will be able to manually edit the settings on the page. (only the Apn, you can add the rest later)
2) go back to your phone settings/general/network/cellular data network and make sure you have the settings listed above.
you will notice the apn settings are not exactly they way you typed it in the website. (that's why you need to change them and also the rest of the settings need to be manually added which were not available on the site)

[Q] Best app for free Tethering/Wifi hotspot?

Is there an app out there that AT&T won't slap you with a $20 charge for using?
you can enable the one built into the phone, please search for answers. im gonna do a how to, it is very easy but people keep asking. if you have root you need to use titanium or appfreezer to freeze an app called tethermanger0326.apk or something to that effect. if you know what you are doing you can delete it as well in anyway you can imagine.
if you dont have/want root, if you are on wifi you can put the phone in airplane mode, then turn only wifi back on. then you can search the market a bit more for apps. some are named in the tethering thread that was already up. thread though apps may still be hidden becasue of the ro.build.fingerprint. if that is the case you can download it to the computer and sideload it.
please if a thread already exists, post there! also read some if it, you may find that the question has been answered
You may not have read my post thoroughly enough. I want to know if there is a tethering app that AT&T will not charge me a fee for using. Using the built-in tethering/hotspot is discovered by AT&T and results in a $20/mo change to your bill.
I have searched and read other posts in this and other forums and the same answer you gave was all I found.
Are you certain using the built in hotspot is detectable by ATT? Or are you planning on downloading gigs worth of data via your Infuse? I'm asking a serious first question! haha
Seriously though, I thought ATT was only auto-charging unauthorized iPhone tethering users.
i have never seen anyone get auto charged, the infuse/captivate wont even let you turn mobile ap on unless you buy the plan. that is the reason for freezing the app, after that, who knows!
I'm not planning on doing a lot of downloading, but I have a Nook Color, so I'm definitely interested in being able to connect the NC via hotspot.
There is a work around for this posted somewhere on these forums that involves creating a new APN, switching to it, enabling hot spot, then switching back to the regular APN. It worked like a charm on my Atrix just last week, but I haven't tried it since I got the Infuse on Tuesday. Search for that thread.

The Atrix checked your plan as well. It would tell you "Your plan does not support tethering, call ATT if you want to change your plan". I'm not sure if it used tethermanager specifically, but it did check, and the APN workaround worked on that phone. Unless someone beats me to it, I'll post here when I've tried it on the Infuse.
Here is the step by step for the Atrix, posted originally by Fixster. There maybe slight
Steps 1: Browse to Menu>>Settings>>Wireless & Networks>>Mobile Networks>>Access Point Names.
Steps 2: Tap ‘Menu’ and select ‘New APN’.
Steps 3: Enter the following APN settings:
Name: AT&T
APN: wap(.)cingular
Proxy: ** Leave Blank **
Port: 80
Username: WAP(@)CINGULARGPRS.COM
Password: CINGULAR1
Server: ** Leave Blank **
MMSC: http//)mmsc.cingular.com
MMS Proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication Type: ** Leave Blank **
APN Type: ** Leave Blank **
After you've created the APN, you switch to it, then enable your hotspot. After you get the notification that setup was successful, switch back to the original APN.
Just a cursory glance in the Infuse settings revealed that unlike the Atrix, there are no radio buttons to select your current APN, so I'm not sure how that part works here.
EDIT: Since I am a noob, I can't post links, and there are instructions here that contain links. Just remove the ().
I just rooted my infuse then installed wifi tether for root users , got app from applanet . Works great

Ok real question. I just turned on AP for the first time the one and i was able to turn it on I am coming from and iPhone way back when 3G and I used the tethering on it and then on my tilt2 but i dont think we have ever been charged for it. I dont download gigs of info but I was wondering if it is ok to still use it or should i check about it. I do have unlimited data plan

worst case you pat a surprise $15 for one month if it upgrades you to the tether plan, then you can change the plan back to what you wish. noone has reported a automatic plan change, i think you are safe after you get around the tethermanager barrier

I can confirm that this does actually work, however, there does not seem to be a way on this phone to deselect the custom APN after you've successfully set up your hot spot. The only way I could disconnect from it was to reset the APN page to it's defaults. Naturally that also kills your hotpot. Plus, you don't want to have to re-enter it every time you want to set up a hot spot. I believe it should be possible to copy the two existing APN's into custom APN's, and that should allow you to switch back and forth. I don't have the time to try that right now, but feel free.

any ideas.
so if everything works, whats the problem?
the problem is no data . no internet
That would be a sim issue. You may need an unlock code to have access. Other wise check your vpns
Sent from the last drop of EaglesBlood: 4.0.4 G2x
Well alright, I just read phone works text work and so on... try putting in the apn's in??? I just googled this try looking more if it doesn't work for you. Other than that maybe SIM???

unlock code
I think the phone is unlocked. That is they way it was sold . Says t-mobile on it but when calling or txting displays att ( that is the nokia e71 sim ), and the the att.mvno that I entered .
How do I check if it is unlocked?
If its unlocked it should all work. http://www.taniwha.org.uk/gprs.html Try looking through here. US is almost all the way at the bottom. Not sure exactly what your using. Not sure if you need the sim carrier or the baseband carrier.
Edit: oh, and if you have access to the phone when you put your sim card in, you said your making calls and sending texts. Yeah, your phones unlocked. The internet thing though is a little weird.
straight talk g2x
It could be the way straighttalk connects to internet. The sim from E71 nokia works with I phones and straighttalk can't find any info why it wouldn't work with android. Thanks for your input.
Lg G2x on straighttalk setup that works
Here are the steps I used to get MMS working on Moto Backflip with Android 2.1
First download Apn Backup and Restore app from app store, and delete all existing APNs. Then manually enter APNs. In android you must have 2 apns setup for mms to work (at least in my case).
Here are my settings:
Name
HOME
APN
att.mvno
Leave everything else alone EXCEPT the bottom selection that says:
APN type (here you must enter the following)
default,supl
Then save, next choose to add another APN
make it look like this:
Name
MMS
APN
att.mvno
skip down to
MMSC
http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy
proxy.mvno.tracfone.com
MMS port
80
skip to:
APN type (enter the following)
mms
THEN SAVE
You will see that only one APN has the option to be chosen, that is ok, Just choose the one that is able to be chosen.
Now go back to Homescreen and then reboot your phone.
This works for me, hope it can help you. I tried a hundred different ways and this was it. Capitalization is important, and the APN type was the trick.
GOOD LUCK and let me know if it worked for you.
got it here: http://www.howardforums.com/showthr...w-the-proper-APN-settings-for-Android-Devices
it works 2g where I am now but I am in
Did you get the data to work? I've been considering going to ST. I've had them before, and for a prepaid company, had really good experience with the service in my area. The same can't be said for Tmo
Lg G2x on straighttalk setup that works
yes it works. The configuration I used is posted a few days ago. The speed for connection shows 2g. Other than that it works well. I am looking for the code to get 3g now. If you read the code above you will see the words tracfone. That is a 2g network ( I think ). I think I have to change that.
Well it's all the same company. Not sure how they handle that. I wonder if it might have something to do with using the SIM you used, (which would make ST right when they said you need a new one.) In any case, I'll just be buying a SIM from them to use on my phone, so maybe it'll work out fine. Unfortunately, I'm still under contract at the moment, so it may be a little while longer.
Straight Talk works well on the default Tmobile ROM, but I just upgraded to Eagles Blood and the T-Mobile SIM settings do not work at all on Straight Talk (for MMS+Internet). Does anyone know of a fix?
These are my settings:
Name: Straight Talk
APN: wap.tracfone.com
Port: 8080
MMSC: http://mms.tracfone.com
MCC: 310
MNC: 260

[Q] Using Cell (Nexus4) + Telus Flex (for ipad) + VOIP (Fongo). APN Configuration

EDIT: SOLVED!!!!
turns out that Telus somehow makes your phone switch from isp.telus.com to sp.telus.com. You must delete any SP.Telus.com APNs. Just to be saved, I deleted all the preset APN's and added my own with no Proxy or Port no. **additionally, i had a security app that was sending texts that there was an unauthorized SIM in my phone. If you have any security app in your phone, make sure you log into it and register the SIM, otherwise it will send texts using the tablets number which will be very expensive.
Hello. This is my first post and I'm sorry if i break any rules, but I haven't found any solution after several days of research.
I have a Nexus 4, Root, Cyanogenmod 10.3, 4.3.
Today I went to Telus and got a SIM that i said was for an ipad so that i could use a Data-only Flex plan with Voip app (Fongo).
I have used this for about a year with Fido, but I liked the Flex bracketing used by Telus.
When I put the SIM in the phone, I went straight to The APN settings. there were three APNs there, one sp.kooddo, one sp.telus, and one isp.telus. I know ipads require the APN isp.telus.com so i selected the last (isp.telus.com), however after use of 1mb, my account showed pay-per-use usage amounting to $6. the preset isp.telus is named "Telus SP Tether." I'm thinking the problem might still be in the APN name. I deleted both the sp.telus ones just to be extra safe.
I added an APN as recommended on the Telus site for ipads/tablets:
APN: isp.telus.com
Proxy: 74.49.0.18
Port: 80
the preset isp.telus.com (Telus SP Tether) had proxy and port empty, but their MMA proxy and MMS port had the above settings.
I don't know if this is was the problem.
There was one thread on XDA about successful setup of Telus tablet flex data SIM in GS3, however, i could not follow their steps because of different menu functionality in the N4. (thread)
OP recomended to make APN, then press BACL instead of SAVE, and then select Radio Button. But if i go back without saving, the APN is cleared and there is no Radio Button.
Telus had put $10 worth of charges for text messages i didn't send. I had Telus block sending and receiving texts, but they still go through and get charged. strangely it's to my moms and borthers cells and its at exact same times (to the second) (e.g. Telus has it that I sent 7 messages at exactly each of these times to both contacts: 3:00:00, 4:00:00, 5:00:00, and 10:00:00). I have no idea what these are....
Additionally, Telus never asked for my IMEI (Fido did require an IMEI of an ipad). when i called in to Telus, they read back the IMEI they had, and it was of the N4. could they be blocking me access to FLEX plan and forcing me into pay as you go?
Thank you for all your help.

Port: 80

Sprint LG V20 Free Hotspot

You can PROBABLY do this without root IF you can coax Sprint into giving you your MSL code, go to the dialer and type ##3283#, going to APN Settings and hitting edit.
THIS method, however, only works if youve ran DirtySanta and rooted your device. I saw a few threads of ppl asking how to get it working so....here's how i did it.
Go to Settings-->Networks-->More-->Mobile Data-->Access Point Names-->Add APN
Name: Sprint LTE 2
APN: n.ispsn
MMSC: http://mms.sprintpcs.com
MMS Proxy: 68.38.21.7
MMS Port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 120
APN Type: default,mms,supl,dun,hipri
APN Protocol: IPV4/IPV6
APN Roaming Protocol: IPV4/IPV6
Leave everything else untouched
Hit Menu-->Save
Select the new APN you just created
Turn on hotspot
For some reason, after you turn on hotspot you may have to manually set the DNS on whichever device you're using to 8.8.8.8 otherwise the internet doesnt work. Not sure why that is, but after i did that, my hotspot works.
If youre using an android tablet with your hotspot and have to change the dns(you'll know because it'll say you're connect to the hotspot but you can't browse any websites), then on your tablet go to your wifi settings, long click on your hotspot youre connected to, click "show advanced options" and change Dynamic to Static (may say manual). After that, scroll down and change the setting for DNS 1 to 8.8.8.8. Should work after that.
I used to use hotspot a lot about a year ago with my note 5(7-10 gb/month average) and never got dinged for it. I would think that if you're cool about it youll be ok. I cant say that FOR SURE but I've never had issues.
Just for the record. I tried everything before rooting. I paid off my phone so they couldn't deny me my MSL. The options are simply missing after entering your MSL code. You can see everything with ##DEBUG# (can't remember the numbers ) but they made sure to remove the option when I used ##3282#. This was the Main reason why I rooted. After rooting it didn't work so I had to figure it out.

Just Clarify you attempted without root and it did not work. You then attempted with root and it still did not work. So while rooted you used them method the OP posted and it worked. ?

I attempted without root and the options were not available for the most part and what little they had, most can't be edited even when I imputed my MSL. Sprint made sure that it wasn't possible without root. There is no add apn option.
After root, I immediately tried to use hotspot and it connected but my devices couldn't get internet services. I asked for help but me2151's hotspot worked well so I figured that I was on my own. I remember adding dun on my lg g4 so I tried the codes but I couldn't get any of the codes to even register on my newly rooted phone.
I finally found the found those setting by searching and saw that "DUN" wasn't there. I then made a new APN with the existing settings but added DUN and it worked so I posted it.
By the lack of responses, I figured that almost no one had the problem.
BTW, how did you figure out adding the apn would work? I remembered a post on the LG G4 forum over a year ago and tried it for this phone.
Merry Christmas
Sprint Hotspot Fix (not passing data to connected devices)
The following is the fix when you can connect to the Hotspot but get DNS errors or no data being passed to connected devices.
Sprint prevents you from editing your APNs
You can change permissions on your telephony db with this command:
adb shell
su
chmod 666 /data/user_de/0/com.android.providers.telephony/databases/telephony.db
Grab the ID of your current APN using the following command:
adb shell
content query --uri content://telephony/carriers/preferapn
If the type doesn't contain "dun", copy the existing type string and add ",dun" to the end:
In the following command you would substitute
your current type string for "your_type_here",
and the _id for your_id_here:
adb shell
su
content update --uri content://telephony/carriers --where "_id=your_id_here" --bind type:s:your_type_here,dun
Example
adb shell
content query --uri content://telephony/carriers/preferapn
Output
Row: 0 _id=656, name=Sprint LTE internet, numeric=310120, mcc=310, mnc=120, apn=n.ispsn, user=, server=, password=, proxy=, port=, mmsproxy=68.28.31.7, mmsport=80, mmsc=http://mms.sprintpcs.com, authtype=-1, type=default,mms,supl,hipri, current=1, protocol=IPV4V6, roaming_protocol=IPV4V6, carrier_enabled=1, bearer=14, bearer_bitmask=0, dns1=, dns2=, ppp_dialing_number=ppp_dialing_number, defaultsetting=1, usercreatesetting=0, sim_subscription=0, inactivetimer=0, mvno_type=, mvno_match_data=, sub_id=2147483643, profile_id=0, modem_cognitive=0, max_conns=0, wait_time=0, max_conns_time=0, mtu=0, edited=0, user_visible=1, touch=0
adb shell

content update --uri content://telephony/carriers --where "_id=656" --bind type:s:default, mms, supl, hipri, dun
I ran into this issue on my Pixel XL and was helped by @Fenny to come up with a fix
do u need root?
Seems to be that you do, his post above said that without it he was missing the ability to edit parts that needed to be changed. I have yet to see a version of these edits for hotspot provisioning that didn't require rooting to be able to edit the appropriate files.
thank you everyone, you need root to edit the APN settings. I'm waiting a solid method to restore to stock before I root. again thanks everyone for their effort.

I realized you couldn't edit the default apn for Sprint so i created a new one since i was already rooted to see if it would work

hey guys just an FYI, you don't have to go through all the trouble of making a new APN setting and stuff like that which is quite frankly a pain in the ass; get shortcut master (free version is fine) from play store. Open it and from the menu tap search, and let it load a sec. Search for "APN" and look near the top of the results for the "ApnUnlock" intent from hidden menu. Tap it's choose the far left Launch method button. The next screen will let you unlock APN access, you just tap the button, you can't miss it.
After its unlocked, launch the ApnSettings intent two lines down in the search results. You can now edit the sons you already have (just add ,dun). That's all it takes. If that ApnSettings doesn't do it, scroll down a page and choose the vzw one, its never failed me once yet through 4 LG phones.
My hotspot works now like it should, I never had to change any DNS settings or anything like that. Zjyst Unlock, then add ,dun to end of the APN type line.
P.S. this method requires root, Im unaware of any way around that, unfortunately

If anything. That is the EXACT program that I was looking for. A shortcut maker but with root access. I use shortcutmaker but it always says that it needs permission. This one asks for permission. Thanks.
This is a far better way too. I did the whole apn thing a few weeks back because I didn't know of this program.
Does anyone know if this counts on the 5gb data free hotspot or is it simply unlimited ? I have the unlimited plan and it includes 5 gb free hot spot.

data used for the hotspot will go against the regular unlimited data. as far as sprint is concerned, its undistinguishable

Settings > Mobile data > Mobile networks > Access Point Names. I literally figured this out while drunk at a bar from the information that was already in this thread, so if you can't figure it out on your own, you probably don't deserve free wireless tethering in the first place.

I also managed to get it working without root. I went to Settings > Mobile data > Mobile networks > Access Point Names, and on the upper right, I clicked the 3 dots and hit Add APN. I copied the settings in the first post, and selected it as my APN afterwards. I'm not sure why I have the option to add new ones, I'm unrooted on LS997ZVC.
