sweet

Hate to say it, but rooting kinda pre-dated this..

Thought that was what that htcdev site was for and they log your phone when you let them unlock your phone to void the warranty. I would rather root it to unlock so they can't tell what I did with me phone.

Note the date on articles such as those before you post them. That is really old news. Besides the post above mine is true. They want you to use HTC dev so you void your warranty. I'll stick to the hacked method and get the full benefits.

HTC's update on bootloaders

**UPDATE 8/3/2011**
They've just posted this on facebook, I know we have S-off now but I thought I'd post it anyway :
"Since our last update, many of you have asked how the bootloader unlocking process will actually work, and in particular why HTC's most recently released devices still have a locked bootloader. Rest assured we're making progress toward our goal to roll out the first software updates in August to support unlocking for the global HTC Sensation, followed soon by the HTC Sensation 4G on T-Mobile and the HTC EVO 3D on Sprint. Because unlocking the bootloader provides extensive control over the device and modifications may cause operation, security and experience issues, new devices will continue to ship locked but will support user-initiated unlocking using a new Web-based tool.
So how will this work? The Web tool, which will launch this month, requires that you register an account with a valid e-mail address and accept legal disclaimers that unlocking may void all or parts of your warranty. Then plug in your phone to a computer with the Android SDK loaded to retrieve a device identifier token, which you can then enter into the Web tool to receive a unique unlock key via e-mail. Finally, apply the key to your device and unlocking will be initiated on your phone.
We're excited to bring bootloader unlocking to developers and enthusiasts, and we feel this new Web tool will meet your needs and continue to provide customers with the best experience. Thanks to the community for supporting these efforts! "

It always voided warranty as far as I know.
This is why most of us are not waiting on HTC to unlock our phones.

Dear HTC,
Please choke on a bag of dicks.
Thanks.
It's great that they're providing an easy and official way to unlock our phones. Root as soon as the next phone we buy is released!
Stop being so cynical, cynical people. :/

If you wanted to S-OFF using HTC's method, they would most likely keep a database of all the device IDs that have used their S-OFF tool, and from there they would know if you've voided your warranty regardless if you have returned the phone to S-ON. But to be honest the only scenario I see where HTC reject your warranty claim after doing S-OFF would be if you bricked the phone. If you are saying stuff like there is excessive dust under the screen, or there are hardware faults, they can hardly reject your warranty claim there, even if you did S-OFF.
Anyways, I bet HTC will probably continue with their tight security policy on their future phones, whilst allowing you to void your warranty and get S-OFF. To be honest this is far better than nothing, it means we don't have to wait (long) for the S-OFF of a new HTC phone to be released. Imagine, buying the latest HTC phone and having ROMs and development popping up on the XDA forums from day one. Thats fantastic.
Don't dismiss HTC's efforts just because we don't need them anymore for the HTC Sensation/EVO 3D thanks to -Revolutionary-, true for now we are happy without them, but when the next HTC phone comes out everyone will appreciate S-OFF from day one.
All u have to do is s-on....no need to worry

Just curious, is unlock bootloader and S-Off the same? Would an unlock bootloader allows one to root his phone?
Yes.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA Premium App
Am I right in thinking that all previous HTC phones did not have S-ON?
If so, I am confused... That means that you are voiding your warranty to get your phone into a state every other phone is by default?

Problems after the update

So a couple of days ago I got the OTA Gingerbread update. After the update my phone has had some problems. When I text, the buttons stop vibrating sometimes. And also some of my contacts on the messaging app just show up as phone numbers. So please tell me what may be happening.
Can't offer any explanations but keep in mind, ota updates can be problematic because its insalling on top of what's currently installed, as opposed to wiping and doing a clean install.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
I would suggest taking the phone in or possibly better off calling tech support and have them re push the update and go from there...or just root it and flash a custom ROM and enjoy the phone how it should've been.
Sent from my Desire HD using Tapatalk
The only problem to rooting my phone is that I might want to trade it in for another Inspire, because the screen is starting to pop out of the phone in the bottom left corner. I just don't want my phone to void the warrenty, and make it so I can't return it.

I've returned 2 phone because of that, 1st one was within the original 30 days and 2nd one was after and I thankfully have a tech warranty center close by.
How ever on the second one, a refurb I don't have working GPS and the guy would not let me exchange it again and gave me a number for HTC to call and get it exchanged that way, why I'm not sure but it may have been my fault any way. Lol

Alright, well right now I am trying to find a way to root the phone. I remember how to root my old Samsung Captivate, but this is very different. Including that I now have android 2.3.3 I havent found any way to root the Inspire with Gingerbread. So if you know where I can find a download, please post it while I keep searching.

[Q] T-mobile lock/unlock

Is it possible to unlock the network on the phone? And also to S-Off+Root ? I'd like to buy it at that low price
as of yet there is no sim unlock tool nor is there an S-OFF tool, There is HTCDev which will unlock the bootloader to allow you to flash ROMS and ROOT and CWM Recovery, But thats all your getting for now...
give it 1 - 2 weeks the development will skyrocket.
So you think that they could do that?
Of course !! have a look around the forums, There is NOTHING these devs cant do..
hell im running ICS on a 2 year old SGS lol and it works flawlessly...
you'll be suprised whats about to come
I hope so, found some crazy prices on the internet for the T-mobile one s, but we have no T-mobile here..
The low prices on the One S are on a 2-year contract. The phone itself is $600 off contract.
But there will be root and S-Off soon as the phone comes out in a few days.

Rooting on T-Mobile

Just got one s and am wanting to root. Just not sure how t Mobile is with warranty issues if u have a root phone. Been a while since I have been using flashed phones on metro with no warranties so never cared before.
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using Tapatalk 2
It breaks the HTC warranty. Not sure about Tmobile, but I'm would expect the same applies
Yea I kinda figured it would. However thought maybe that had changed with HTC unlock being available and that its been proven with that method that you can't really damage the hardware.
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using Tapatalk 2
Once you unlock the bootloader (which is required to root), you basically sign away your warranty.
Worst comes to worst you can just wipe the hboot partition from recovery and claim ignorance.

Make unlocking your phone legal

https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/pe...gov&utm_medium=shorturl&utm_campaign=shorturl
I'm not one normally for stuff like thus but something need to be done people who have no idea about technology have no business make choices on how we the user use our phones.

What the hell.... why are they doing it I just signed the petition hope the govt take action about it.
This is ridiculous
So does this mean I can't flash custom ROMs anymore for my next phone? Unlocking == Unlock Bootloader? Or Unlocking = Allowing to run on different network is a different process than unlocking the bootloader...idk just confused about the bill if someone could clarify
Carrier unlock, not bootloader unlock
Done, this is a bunch of BS.
Sent from a slithery smooth phone!
I read a few articles about this back in December. Any phones bought before the law went into effect can still be unlocked legally by whatever means a person sees fit. To have an unlocked new device you must either purchase a device already unlocked like the nexus 4 or an iPhone sold buy apple unlocked, or you must get special permission from the carrier. I also remember reading an article about rooting or unlocking tablets becoming illegal unless provided by the manufacture like how Google does with the nexus line (couldn't find any recent articles over this).

The new law now prevents unauthorized tinkering of tablets sold and distributed in the United States. However, the rule applies for devices governed by telcos' exclusive contracts, most of which expire after two years. I added two different links from a basic Google search.

There's a lot of FUD going around. Even The Verge (90 Seconds), had a spot that was vague and seemed to suggest that bootloader unlocking was now illegal (already gone through the courts and confirmed legal).
I think the new law is a net zero effect. Nothing really changes except that carriers have the option of pursuing you legally for taking their phone (your phone) off their network. I don't see them putting a lot of resources into enforcement.
