Google Wallet will only be on Sprint Nexus at Launch? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This totally defeats the notion that buying a Nexus will get you all the latest and greatest features first. I have a T-Mobile Nexus S and I wouldn't be surprised if it takes 5 months for it to get Google Wallet, despite the technology being exactly the same. Why does Google do this? I was so excited about using NFC too.

1. NFC is a drain on the battery, so I won't be using it anytime soon.
2. I'm not really sure why Sprint Nexus S gets it first. Why does Google do stuff like this? Both of the models are NFC enabled. There shouldn't be any reason to limit it like that. I guess it's their MO.

Sprint is a official partner. MasterCard and citi are other partners. That's why. If Google wallet gains traction you'll see it elsewhere.

The GSM version of the Samsung Nexus S may receive access to the just-announced Google Wallet service, but Google will work with T-Mobile to bring the service to market for that phone, according to Google VP of Payments Osama Bedier. Mr. Bedier ruled out circumventing carriers like T-Mobile in bringing Google Wallet - and compatible phones - to market. The GSM Nexus S has the same NFC chip required for Google Wallet as the Nexus S 4G that the service is being trialled with today. Google expressed optimism that more carriers would support Google Wallet soon, and that many more phones would include the necessary NFC chip going forward.

Voice it to T-Mo if you want it to get done. It seems like Google does, they need to get T-Mobile on board though.

Why does a Telecom have tobe. Involved

T-Mobile is a member of ISIS, along with AT&T and Verizon, which is a competing mobile payment platform to Google Wallet. I would not be surprised if Google Wallet works on ALL Nexus S phones, they may just not be able to announce it on T-Mobile, either because of T-Mobile's involvement with ISIS, or because Sprint is a partner in Google Wallet. Either way, sounds more like marketing to me than a technology limit.

couldnt someone just get the app and share it with the rest of us?

im sure the tmo-Isis partnership has something to do with it. but i also bet that all nexus phones will get it eventually, but since sprint/google wallet is official, theyre not gonna announce anything else.

The interface demo'd today showed all the interface for inputting all of your CC info (Number, expiry, Name, Billing Address).

Im not really sure what role the carrier plays in the actual transmission of the data. Also, the GSM version of Nexus S is not T-Mobile branded unlike the Sprint Nexus S.

No it's not. It made a 1% difference in my battery life after leaving my Nexus S running with full brightness, screen on and an app I wrote with a full wake lock for a few hours. 1% in 4 hours, that's not battery drain.

I was losing at least 7-8% a day with it on. I already hate the battery life on Android devices in general, so I turned it off to get as much as I can.

The carrier doesn't play any role. In fact, Google Wallet payments work without any data connection at all.

Does anyone have or use Google Wallet yet? Anyone know where to get the app, and how to register for it?
I've been lurking around the NS forums for a while and I'm surprised that no one is talking about this.
This function has tipped me over into buying an NS. I should be getting it in the mail this week (i9020a) and I can't wait until I can use this feature.

Yeah, carrier billing has been around with T-Mobile for several months.
Correct me if I misread, but when I was going to purchase Titanium Backup and use T-Mobile as payment (since money was going to a foreign country and I didn't feel like paying the extra 10 cents in fee), the terms said T-Mobile has the right to remove your apps if necessary. I think it was near the bottom of the terms. Am I the only one that saw that?

Our conveinace doesn't have a slot in at&t's spreadsheets. Google can't really do a thing on this subject W/O AT&T agreeing and cooperating.

BestBuy / Sprint N5 comes with a locked SIM slot?

I am solving this as we speak, so I will update, but went to BB, bought the N5 (I have my reasons why I bought there, not from Play store)
The box states, software lock is in place to prevent the use with non-Sprint sim cards. Also Sprint brochure in box, and no pin-tray key in the box. In other words, the phone is packaged for Sprint specifically.
I bought it, I will call up Sprint and T-Mobile (which is who I want to use) and see what's up.
Anyone else has info?

I really hope that being simlocked to Sprint doesn't affect Android updates down the line. It shouldn't, because it's technically not a "Sprint variant" of the phone, but you never know.

Wait till you get the phone. For all you know, it may be SIM unlocked like the version from the play store. For other phones like the S4, Sprint does have the 90 day requirement before unlocking it for use with International SIMs.
On the Nexus 5, hopefully, they haven't locked down the US bands (like they do with the S4 and other phones). The play store version is not locked.
The http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2513701 thread shows you how to flash the stock images - but again, no guarantees that it will do the trick till you actually try it out.
I didn't want to risk this, so I just bought from the play store. I asked the play store person if the phone was guaranteed to get timely updates direct from google, and he gave a "Phones purchased from the play store will get timely updates from google" response. I'm guessing it was a canned response, but I do hope that Sprint doesn't cripple the version sold by Sprint/Bestbuy etc.
That's pretty crappy. I'd return it.
No, Flashing the stock image will not remove the SIM lock. The SIM lock is stored in a different place.

Update
Sprint Tech Support confirmed the phone is locked. The problem is that they COULD unlock it, but the phone needs to be activated first. To activate the phone, I have to add it to a plan (a 2 year contract). Without that, they cannot do anything with a "cold" phone. Thus far I got nowhere .. the plan is definitely to return it if they do not budge.
I purchased mine from the Google play store as well.
Why would sprint sell it at a subsidized price of $150 or $50 for new customers without locking it to their network during your 2 year contract.
Also, I bet sprint will only unlock it for international use during the 2 year contract. Just like the iPhone and s4.

Well sure, I understand that with the subsidized phones, but I paid it up front - I paid the full $450 for a Nexus. I wanted an unlocked phone ... it's a bum deal.
I am trying to find out whether a friend of mine could activate it on his account, I get it unlocked, and then we re-activate his iPhone back ... not sure Sprint will go for it.
Ugh .. I just want a Nexus 5 you know? ... and this seemed like a fine way of getting it (My old Captivate died finally for good on Tuesday. and I do not really have $350 just siting around, so the $100 markup was my financing "cost" to get 18 month of payments (I have no interest financing through best buy; my other card has high interest .. it was not a bad financing plan). Ugh .. if only Sprint let me unlock it.
Returned it. will get the tmo version next week. i really wish the wait on play store was shorter. my phone is dead ... waiting is too painful.

I don't think Sprint has any clue what they are talking about. I had a 200 dollar BB giftcard so I went in tonight and purchased a "Sprint" N5 and I don't even have Sprint service Ran by the AT&T store and picked up a micro sim, popped it in and everything is working perfectly. The device is definitely not locked to Sprint. Full LTE data with AT&T without having to configure anything.

Verizon prepaid sells m8 lists isis mobile wallet as feature but wont let you use it

Verizon prepaid sells new m8's for their prepaid service and lists in the features section of the phone " Shop, Pay & Save with Isis Mobile Wallet. NFC SIM required " But try to set up isis mobile wallet and guess what it says your isis wallet has been terminated and to call verizon. You call and they say isis mobile wallet is not allowed on prepaid, which that is flat out false advertising as they cant list Shop, Pay & Save with Isis Mobile Wallet. NFC SIM required and then say oh no that is only for post paid accounts. I asked to talk to a supervisor which was no help so I asked to speak to her supervisor and got oh they will have to call you back with in 24 hours, and she refused to give me her employee number which was a first as I have had problems with verizon before but they always gave me an employee number for documentation purposes. This is just another load of crap verizon is trying to get away with. I mean its our data were paying for and they want to tell me what I cant use my data for and try to block me from using a feature of the phone one that they clearly list in the features section of the phone right on the verizon prepaid section. And its an app from google play they are blocking me from using just because I"am on prepaid but using a phone they sell for prepaid that lists Shop, Pay & Save with Isis Mobile Wallet. NFC SIM required ???? What kind of crap is this ? Its pure false advertising if it was excluded from prepaid it should not have been listed or listed not available with the prepaid service instead they lied and listed it as a feature of the phone they are selling for use on verizon prepaid... See the added screen shots from the verizon prepaid side clicking on the m8 for sale and on features.

Yeah they are losing a lot of customers and going to lose more as I read they are going to throttle unlimited data customers coming up after they use 4.7 gb's they get throttled. They are losing ground to at&t as at&t is more willing to negotiate and compete verizon has always thought they were too big for their own britches and have always had the attitude that they have the right to be the gready you know whats.

Nope it was being locked out of using the isis mobile wallet by verizon just because I"am on the verizon prepaid and not the post paid any longer. The isis is supposed to be a joint venture with verizon, at&t and tmobile, but tmobile is all prepaid now isnt it ? I know its no contract at least and verizon has to be as petty as they can. Omg you would not believe how hard the verizon reps tried to get me to stay post paid it made me think they are being punished by verizon I wouldnt doubt it as bad as verizon is on customers they are probably extremely worse on their employees. I was like really shocked how many times they tried too and I explained over and over that verizon prepaid was a lot less and that I can get refills through prepaidonline.com cheaper and they dont charge me tax to use them to add money to my verizon prepaid account. Verizons sales have dropped big time this last quarter only thing keeping numbers up was tablet activations, and now they have many people defecting from post pait to prepaid since the prepaid side got 4g lte data back on the 17th and now allow any verizon 4g lte phone to be activated on prepaid they even sell the m8 and s4 and s5 on the prepaid side to run on prepaid. Even though at&t, sprint and tmobile all have had 4g lte data on their prepaid plans for a long time now.

Leave it to Verizon to Neuter the S7

Been looking over the user manuals on the Samsung site.Looks like once again Verizon has removed the stock Samsung browser which also prevents using your finger print to log into internet sites as well as no smart manager and no find my mobile.Maybe more things that I have not noticed yet.Wished I lived in an area that had decent T-Mobile,Sprint or AT&T service.

That's what I did. Best move ever. The best part is when vzw tried to get me to stay
Why are you leaving sir?
Because I'm going to be paying half as much for twice the data
Well sir, it looks like you only use 5 gigs a month, you don't need that extra data..
So your argument to get me to stay is that I don't use enough? I used 5 gigs because that's what I have and I'm responsible. Plus the overages are insane.
Well sir, at least give us a chance to try to match it.
...
Their best offer was actually $20 more than what I was already paying when I decided to leave lol. Verizon is delusional. Anybody that stays with them is throwing money away.
I travel all over the US for work, and tmobile is **** compared to Verizon in MANY areas I go to. I have both a tmobile and Verizon phone with me on these trips, and while it is getting less common, there are still many times my tmobile phone doesn't work and my Verizon one does.
So it isn't as black and white as people with Verizon are "throwing away money"...

I think this was supposed to help cut down on bloat too. But I read a lot of the Sammy apps are in the play store or the galaxy app store.
Verizon users can't access it in the play store either.
Couldn't you just get a S7 from another carrier or the unlocked international variant and then activate it on Verizon?
don't know if it works that easily. I would have, but i didn't bother chancing it since I went full price.

Luckily side loading doesn't require root. I don't see any reason why this couldn't be side loaded if Verizon really does block this from the Play Store. Didn't Verizon get sued some years back for blocking apps on the Play Store?
