Hi there everybody,
I'm probably in the wrong section of the forum, and my questions are nubby I know, but I get confused.
My Desire S is S-ON, and I would like to get is S-OFF. Is this possible, because it is needed to be able to root the phone right?
And an offtopic question, what is a flash-able app, and what is the difference with a normal custom .apk which can be installed from the sd card.
Thanks in advance

It seems that HTC reverse its decision to block everything on the latest versions, after the petition that circulated on the net, requesting the release.

Actually, no.
From the same article:
"In short: custom ROMs, kernels, and recoveries (like ClockworkMod) may never come to the EVO 3D, barring some kind of epic HTC screw-up."

Is it really worth getting s-off and root on my Sensation?
What are the main advantages/disadvantages? & is there a simple way to go back to stock if my phone breaks and i need to send it to get fixed.
Also can someone link me to a noob proof guide to S-OFF and Root?
I've been looking through the development section, and there are to many guides to choose from.
Alpharev is working on a noob proof way to s-off the sensation. There is no eta for now. Should be released in a couple of weeks. You could wait for that.

By "noob proof" i mean the easiest way to do it all.
I've done things with like flashing software on psps, ipods, etc before.
HTC's official unlock process should be as easy as it gets, and due sometime this month unless it's slipped back.
The stock Sensation is a pretty solid phone though. So whether it's worth unlocking depends in part on whether you're happy with your experience using it, or are tempted by features offered by custom ROMs.
I unlocked mine as soon as I could. But then for me being able to tinker around with custom ROMs is part of the appeal of Android.

Follow the the instructions, its as easy as pie.Easier than CFW and Pandora battery on psp so you should be fine, Revolutionary is well easy just download for your OS fill in the boxes then run the .bat script and enter your beta key. Also choose the option to install recovery....Download the rom you want to try, flash through recovery and let it boot

Is there a software way to desimlock the Desire S ?
I can ask the operator to do it but it would be simpler if I could do it myself.
Thanks in advance.

No SIMLOCK (or carrier lock as its often called) will not be removed by installing a Custom ROM, rooting or S-OFF'ing your device.
I believe that you either need to use what's called a Goldcard to achieve this or else pay your carrier to do it for you.
Also goldcard will also not work. You can pay your carrier or use a xtc clip. Best bet is an unlock code off eBay or another trusted site.

where is the simlock stored on DS? in the radio firmware/hboot or other place?
overwriting the radio or hboot with one from unlocked version wouldn't do the trick?

I'm afraid that I don't know the answer to where SIMLOCK is actually stored.
I would guess that its not stored in RADIO or HBOOT as we all flash the same versions of both of these whether we're locked or unlocked and our lock status is never changed.
But, I'd say that the cost of paying for the service online $10-$20, is minimal compared to the damage that you could do to the device with unknown flashing from one handset to another.
i guess the risk can be compared to that of unlocking hboot or using custom firmware. for some people that's ok...
almost every piece of software on this forum can brick your device
for example i found a program on this forum, gfree, that writes directly to mtd partitions.
other examples include kernels modified by "developers" asking for donations to take programming classes. if it's not risky using a kernel with filesystem code modified by them i don't know what is
so, sure, if you just want it unlocked and don't care about custom firmwares and such, 10-20$ is a great deal.
anyway, i was just asking in theory, where is the simlock stored on Desire S?

^^^^ Agree ^^^^ If you are already S-OFF'd and rooted with Revolutionary, don't miss with the HTC version because it doesn't buy you anything and would actually take away some functionality you already have.

Thanks, for telling me that.... i don't want to lose any function!
Dont worry man, Im a bit of a noob myself but were glad to have you over on the android side of things I have read that the revolutionary way gives you more read/write access and the official HTC unlock doesnt give you full access to the bootloader, nor does the official HTC unlock automatically install clockwork mod. If I were you I would definitely go the revolutionary method, but chances are the HTC method is slightly more stable.
I used the revolutionary method to root and now im trying roms/themes .... any suggestions
I installed the official ICS from HTC's website. its like a RUU or something. I'm real real noob and i kinda want to root now. Is it too late? or do i have to wait? O and further information I don't know what radios, roms, flashing... etc means. so ya!.. im a real noob sry guys.
Based on your description to yourself, as you real real real noob and does not know the meaning of the technical words and things done to your phone. I would strongly suggest to keep out of rooting. You might kill your phone.
Rooting is not for yourself, and for noobs, again based from on you self description.

OP, i would suggest that u take time to read the stickies. There are full of information inside in detail. And if u still need further detail then google is your friend.
The search button would do you a great help, no point posting the same question and waiting it to be answered as most question concerning rooting has been answered before, many times. As rooting is not something newly discovered for to this phone.
If you do not take the time to read then u will bump into many issue, that would of course not cost anyone in this forum any harm, but cost your phone to possibly brick.
Read the guides, read the pros and cons, and read the comments(don't be fooled by the number of complains, most of them have solutions and the methods are proven to work).
If you have doubt, search 1st, search 2nd, search google, try different words and finally only then post a question.

The information is all over the forum. At least one of the guides that is good for Gingerbread, is good for ICS too. Until you have enough knowledge to figure this stuff out yourself, I'd suggest, as others, to stay away from rooting. I don't want to answer another barrage of questions "this doesn't work and that doesn't work, I'm stuck with a non-working phone, what do I do now", and in fact I won't answer. If enough of those few that can answer will be annoyed to the point where they won't bother answering - you'll be left with a non-working phone and no help.
You have two options, and both are well documented in these forums.
1. (recommended): downgrade your hboot (and with it the system software, but afterwards you can install what you want) and then get s-off
2. : unlock your phone on the htc-dev website, lose any warranty, always need to flash boot.img by fastboot from pc etc.
Guides for both these options should be quickly found on these forums through searching.
You have hboot 2.xx.xxxx. that's why you can't get s-off without downgrading.

AFAIK it is not possible to downgrade hboot on ICS RUU without root. And you can't get root without unlock via htc-dev.
So you need to unlock via htc-dev!
Correct me if I'm wrong and please share a link.

Indeed, AFAIK you can't get root in ICS without HTCDev unlock.
So you can either HTCDev unlock and root, or you can HTCDev unlock, root, relock, downgrade, S-OFF, upgrade bootloader, and then do whatever you want.
Guides for both of those methods exist.

This is why people start getting annoyed with the 'noobs' on the forums. You ask questions, get them answered by guys like Jack_R1 who know what they are talking about and then just ignore them, or ask the same damn question again.

Well for any noob the internet is a great place to start especially XDA
As people have instructed already these forums are full of wisdom, and Im sure the answer is in one of the many threads.
But at a high level this is what I did:
1.Installed the official ICS update from HTC using the RUU.
2.Unlocked the phone via HTC dev website instructions.
3.Rooted the phone using SuperOneClick(Flashed it via recovery)
But I really dont understand why you would want to root the stock rom as it does not even support overclocking, I mean the kernel.
Im using Fallout V5.0 and I assure you thats its way better than stock
Note: If all this seems like greek and latin to you, please refrain from rooting your device and hence avoid any possible damage to your phone.

Actually XDA is a Developers forum - that was the key purpose for its creation. Yes, you can come here and ask for help; but I am suggesting that you read the information that is freely available so that you understand what you are doing and why - and how to get out of any problems you might encounter.
