[Q] Is it worth it? & noob proof guide? - HTC Sensation

Is it really worth getting s-off and root on my Sensation?
What are the main advantages/disadvantages? & is there a simple way to go back to stock if my phone breaks and i need to send it to get fixed.
Also can someone link me to a noob proof guide to S-OFF and Root?
I've been looking through the development section, and there are to many guides to choose from.

Alpharev is working on a noob proof way to s-off the sensation. There is no eta for now. Should be released in a couple of weeks. You could wait for that.

By "noob proof" i mean the easiest way to do it all.
I've done things with like flashing software on psps, ipods, etc before.

HTC's official unlock process should be as easy as it gets, and due sometime this month unless it's slipped back.
The stock Sensation is a pretty solid phone though. So whether it's worth unlocking depends in part on whether you're happy with your experience using it, or are tempted by features offered by custom ROMs.
I unlocked mine as soon as I could. But then for me being able to tinker around with custom ROMs is part of the appeal of Android.

www.Revoluitionary.io
Follow the the instructions, its as easy as pie.Easier than CFW and Pandora battery on psp so you should be fine, Revolutionary is well easy just download for your OS fill in the boxes then run the .bat script and enter your beta key. Also choose the option to install recovery....Download the rom you want to try, flash through recovery and let it boot

^^^^ Agree ^^^^ If you are already S-OFF'd and rooted with Revolutionary, don't miss with the HTC version because it doesn't buy you anything and would actually take away some functionality you already have.

Thanks, for telling me that.... i don't want to lose any function!
Dont worry man, Im a bit of a noob myself but were glad to have you over on the android side of things I have read that the revolutionary way gives you more read/write access and the official HTC unlock doesnt give you full access to the bootloader, nor does the official HTC unlock automatically install clockwork mod. If I were you I would definitely go the revolutionary method, but chances are the HTC method is slightly more stable.
I used the revolutionary method to root and now im trying roms/themes .... any suggestions

Read read read read read before u try anything. Just fyi. Learn about what you doing and what it does to your phone. Learn how to recover and backup. Jumping into this game isn't easy. And could brick your phone. But for starters you need to check here revolutionary.io to unlock, root, and install recovery. Also get S-OFF aka security off. Aka locked boot loader.

As RANDYRKELLY says: First thing is to read carefully, understand and learn. Search this forum for everything about rooting, s-off and flushing ROMS. There are great step-by-step how-to's in here, so that there's no need to explain it once more in a separate thread.
You should start here for example: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1192300
Yes, it is said to read well and understand that you want to do and unlock the boot with better revolutionary than http://htcdev.com/, good luck

Do not use the htc unlock. Will not give you read write state. U need to use revolutionary cause it roots, unlock boot loader, and installs recovery. Please don't miss lead him.

I said that after http://htcdev.com/ will not be able to flash custom kernel, and unlock a better revolutionary
your best bet is to stick to xda it has everything you need to root and flash whatever you want there are alot of threads that will explain what root off is and how to get it. it will aslo explain how to flash roms, and what that is good luck you can always post here in the q&a with any problems you have
thanks randy & kaym....
anyways its S-off...

Actually, your the one misleading people, revolutionary doesnt actually root a phone, it just gives an unlocked bootloader. Installing superuser from market is what gives apps root and a line in the build.prop file gives the user root permissions

how many use super CID

I'm not familiar with super CID coming from the Mytouch4G, how many of you did it when you rooted? I'm rooting my Sensation 4G as I type this.

I don't have to do it at this time right? I could always choose to do it later correct? The reason I ask is because I read that you would not be able to receive any OTA updates HTC pushes out.

well if you don't want to install ics custom rom you don't have to but if you want you have anyway there are ics fw that can be installed without supercid but imo it is better to supercid
edit: and if you supercid you can revert it back....however if you have rooted the phone you can't receive OTA, or better you can but it will brick your phone

yes man before getting the ota you MUST flash the stock htc RUU which you can find in the development forum
Almost everyone does SuperCID after rooting.
After Rooting, I didn't though. I just S-Offed. A week later, I realized I had to SuperCID to get some ROMs to work. So I did it and never regretted.
Go for it.

I have not needed supercid, I simply s-off'd and not needed any such thing.
I have updated the fw and I'm running Virtuous Inquisition ICS rom, no problems?
I really don't understand why you'd want to change the CID or how it affects ROMS
You don't have to supercid, but it might be handy at some point. It will allow you to flash any ruu shall you ever need it.

There are no downsides. I did it as soon as I got my Sensation.
I bought my sensation pre rooted, I have latest firmware and am runnin a 4.0.3. Rom, so does this mean the guy used superCID or whatever

if your not branded,
you will almost never have to supercid for a custom rom to install.
but for example if a firmware update is mandatory, you might depending on your cid/mid.
i own a xe device and never supercid it, can install anything without problems. (dont always) believe what people say, but always check the description on the base of your own cid/mid yourself.
that said,it cant hurt to supercid, but if its not mandatory why?
+1 Me too
+1 I've supercid as well, changed a few times back to orginal CID because of warranty without problem.

please help me ICS

The best advice you can get is probably this: wait a little longer for OFFICIAL ICS which will be pushed via the update. Since it will be official, and via the update, it will be delivered ready to go straight from HTC.
Beware: if you start delving into these forums just to get ICS, you are in for a ride of your life. If you are not into this kind of "fun", i would recommend just waiting for official, which is just hours/days away.

Not at all. It's pretty easy:
S-Off/Root
Flash new Firmware
Flash New Rom
Each step has detailed guides and can be accomplished in 20 to 25 minutes each - the firmware only taking 3 minutes. Just make sure you follow directions, carefully. As in, really, very carefully. If you're unsure of something, don't do it.
That's reach, guys......
So many replies and none specific.... Why to bother answering at all???
To get ICS OTA you need to be stock. S-off does not matter, root also.
Has to have a stock recovery and 1.50.401.1 for original or 1.73.401.4 for XE.
Although, if you want to install custom ICS, you have to read Dev section for specific requirements of the ROM of your choice....I read a lot good reviews for almost all of the ICS ROMS.
And here is something to keep in mind:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=23427200&postcount=1
Otherwise EddyOS will be really upset...LOL
Have to find a RUU for your particular phone and flush it to bring everything back to original condition (will be un-rooted, but S-off will remain).
Good luck!!!
Keep in mind eddy won't help you if you get stuck he will tell you search or use google lol

Bottom line, you can't update to ICS unless someone follows some steps on the forum to either A: Return the RUU to stock or B: Flashes an ICS Rom for you.
He sounds like a smart guy, too bad it didn't workout.
You may have someone in a circle of friends that's familiar with rooting etc. Hit them up to do the labor.

I have a question... my phone is stock the RUU as you've called it is from HTC. I downloaded an app "CID Getter" from Play/Market and it tells me my ROM is 1.45.401.2 which if I'm correct is official. My CID is orang001 then as i scroll down it says main CID HTC_001 so why has this not updated to 1.50.401.1 for example?

Need advice before rooting a new Desire S :D

Hi all,
I am new to android and just* want to root my phone as many apps demand your phone to be rooted such as full backup apps, firewall apps and other similar apps.
I am still on HTC's stock 2.3.3 with HTC sense v.2.1 (though i have downloaded the OTA update for 2.3.5 but kinda confused over negative reviews of 2.3.5 update..so I am holding it here right now)
But when I saw a guide here though quite helpful but I was a bit confused as what I read on other articles on XDA + on other blogs that a thing called HBOOT is a bit tricky to tackle while following a particular rooting method; as there are many ways to root like using revolutionary..installing custom bootloaders etc (is it really neccessary? I just want to root my phone and don't plan to install any custom ROMs in near future.)
I am confused
- as to should I really let my warranty go off the table as its just a month old phone sacrificing it for just a few apps I want to use.
- Please tell me that, will I be able to search for and install the officially released OTA updates such as the 2.3.5 / ICS after I have done S-OFF + Rooted my phone??
If answer to both of the questions above is a "YES"
then plz tell me step by step of how to S-OFF and ROOT my phone (I found multiple ways to Root the phone and now I am confused and not really confident on which way/approach to follow)
Any advice would be appreciated.
Regards,
Sky770
If you want to root, do not download the OTA and install!!
You are in a great position, and you can easily root your hboot with the alpharevx.
Do it, you won't regret it.
Also, we can't give you step by step guides... Follow the index links.
Also, you can't install updates after rooted. But you won't need to. We will have the official ICS prerooted before.

ok.. I really have no idea about what happens and what not happens if i do downgrade my HBOOT but I see many people here on XDA done that (downgraded their HBOOT) Can you shed some light on this topic?
Also, I would definitely want to try official 2.3.5 and/or the official ICS release (whenever they release one; around Q3/Q4 2012? ) so is there any* way to install these if I do revolutionary? I would def. like to find these updates via OTA (will my phone detect these from official HTC servers?)
PS: I am trying to stay as long as with official ROM as of now :| so no near future plans to flash my baby with a custom one
Just need the root

You will not thank me for this, but for your sake I suggest reading instead of writing. All of the info you're asking for is written in the guides, and people that write the guides don't have enough patience to answer those that don't bother reading and ask the same questions over and over. Writing questions instead of reading FAQs and guides leaves you with less probability of having a good answer or having an answer at all, and clutters the already cluttered forum.

ok.. I really have no idea about what happens and what not happens if i do downgrade my HBOOT but I see many people here on XDA done that (downgraded their HBOOT) Can you shed some light on this topic?
Also, I would definIitely want to try official 2.3.5 and/or the official ICS release (whenever they release one; around Q3/Q4 2012? ) so is there any* way to install these if I do revolutionary? I would def. like to find these updates via OTA (will my phone detect these from official HTC servers?)
PS: I am trying to stay as long as with official ROM as of now :| so no near future plans to flash my baby with a custom one
Just need the root

As you are on the old hboot, there is no need of downgrading, that's why I said, do not install the upgrade.
We have a ROM, by Proxuser, which is the rooted version of the OTA with no modifications and will work out pretty well.
Once rooted you will not be able to receive any OTA upgraded, but IMHO, hardly matters, you will get the same and better versions out here.
We already have the leak of ICS build for desire S, and it's pretty fast, forget q3
Also we have very functional sense 4 lite, which is faster than sense 3.6
So again, do the revolutionary, it's quite simple actually for you, and flash the saga 3D,, for a stock experience
Tapatalked from a Desire S waiting for Kernel 3 sources. WAKE UP HTC!!!!!!

Well the beauty of rooting is trying out custom ROMs... I don't think you should root if you don't intend too. You seriously won't regret it. Just take a NAND backup, you can always restore to it if you don't like the custom ROMs.
And as I have said before...
No, you can't get OTAs once rooted, but you can still install these maually, and you will be able to do it way before the update actually hits your phone 'officially'.
As we have said too, you are in a good position. No need to downgrade at all. Your hboot version is the right one.

Right.. When I acually was craving for a droid I was crazy as hell to root n try out new ROMs but... when I got an HTC I was simply hands down n thought not to touch this beauty. HTC Desire S is quite a package at this cheap price + hardware config.
PS: just a last ques. for now: which OS is the recommended one? I do have linux mint 10 32 bit edition installed on my machine; its a bit old.. rarely updated the packages n all AND I have windows 7 ultimate 64 bit edition ..so which one would you recommend me to root with?
Thanks a lot guys.
I'll get on it.. and will tell you how things go

Well i felt the same too. It's great out if the box, but you can achieve so much more when rooted.
Do it. Also, Windows 7 is easier.
ROMs? Have you checked the dev forum yet?
Sent from my HTC Desire S using xda premium

First thing, you dont need to read 100+ threads, the index is in my signature with all sorts of information
STOCK ICS Sense 3.6: Virtuous Saga
Sense 4.0A(One V port): Fallout
And yes, any OS that you are comfortable with should be fine.. I did it on Win 7

No, that's not what forums are for. You should probably look at the name of the forum and think, what does "-developers" part stand for, and why isn't it called "XDA-users-in-doubt-that-are-too-lazy-to-bother-reading". Your "period" you can use elsewhere.
To your last question: Windows is what the guides are written for, so doing everything on Windows will be better - it won't require you to understand and "translate" everything to Linux.

(wish I could give this a thumbs up too )
@sky770... The guys are right, In my opinion it's only worth rooting your device if you plan to try a couple of custom ROM's. You seriously won't regret. HTC have a habit of leaving some of the older devices to "fall & die" without providing updates. Through the hard work and determination of some of these guys on here, You will not only have your handset kept alive but also at the same level as some as HTC's flagship devices.
As for recommendation on ROM
