The future of my samsung galaxy s (is it bright?)

Hi I have just brought a Samsung galaxy s which I really like but I have a 14 day return period and I am having some doubts.
Gingerbread has recently been announced and I am thinking that it is unlikely that the galaxy s will get an update what do you guys think?
When I had WM (touch pro 2) I could upgrade roms whenever a new device came out, I'm guessing this is more likely to happen with android on a htc device?
I suppose my question would be this, is there any devices which are being released within about a month which will be as good as my galaxy s but likely to last with good updates etc.
Sorry about my vauge questions I just dont wanna spend all this money on a phone to find support gets pulled at the first moment.
I don't think you should worry.
I haven't heard of any phones that will be confirmed to have 3.0 (Gingerbread) other then the obvious nexus one.
You will be able to download any custom rom that is written for Gingerbread. You don't really need the official update, do you? I know it is nice, but it shouldn't affect your decision of a phone.
Plus, from what I hear, the Galaxy S is pretty sweet.
samsung chairman has directed the mobile phone division to focus on the galaxy series so I wouldn't worry so much.

Honestly I don't think Gingerbread is aimed at phones at all. I think it's for netbooks and pads really.
Ok thanks guys, that's what I wanted to hear. I'll be keeping the SGS then

excessive drooling due to Android 2.3

When will the Android 2.3 ROMs start showing up?
Soon as they get the bugs worked out
You can see working "tech demos" under the i9000 Galaxy forum as well as other Samsung forums.
AND... I think just about every other "major" brand of phone currently has someone working on it lol. Just need to browse around the dev forums and see if your phone has someone working on a port.
Thank you! I can't wait!!
Beat you guys to it

Look at the post date, january 5th. There are 2.3 ROMs out now for many phones, I don't think this question needed to be revived. :/
When will my motorola milestone will get 2.3!!!!
I really hope that hTC doesnt drag their feet on getting me 2.3 for my Incredible!
I would guess that 2.3 is still quite a ways off from manufacturer releases.

Maybe I should have kept my X10

One of the reasons why I switched from the X10 to the Captivate was because Samsung promised to upgrade to 2.2, while Sony Ericsson stated that it could only upgrade the X10 to 2.1. What Samsung did not say is that its 2.2 upgrade could not do bluetooth voice dialing. This is a big issue for me because California requires hands free use of a cellphone.
So, now with the news that Sony Ericsson will upgrade the X10 to 2.3 after all, I find myself feeling like one of those guys in a V8 commercial. I know there are a couple of custom Roms that allow voice dialing, but I wish Samsung would have supported it. How hard is it, really?
Anyway, I hope Samsung now feels the pressure to update the Captivate to 2.3 too.
XDA Devs > Samsung Devs, so I don't really feel like we need Samsung support.
We've been having Android 2.2 ROMs for close to 6 months now, and we already have some 2.3 ROMs under development (CM7, MIUI), so IMO you shouldn't regret switching to the Cappy (apart from GPS issues )
I think the X10 is the worst android phone ever... no multi touch? that just killed the whole android ecosystem in that phone, I recently got a craptivate while is not the best phone it is million years better than the crappy X10, you can even drop android 4 on it and will think the same.. besides they still have that driver/color issue on all ROMS... trust me you have a good phone (Captivate) Besides there are so many dev's that upgrading to a better android version won't be any issues. just be ready to flash.. and flash A LOT.
Try a custom ROM. Cognition, Perception (discontinued but still a stable, fast ROM) FireFly and most others are running 2.2 with bluetooth voice dialing. I don't know about all, but I know from personal experience those three do.

I sold my x10 to come to the captivate. I got no regrets. Although custom kernels will soon be available as a bypass has been found on the x10. Also it has multitouch now

I thought the multitouch was all janky because the hardware wasn't meant to support it and it was enabled by some software trickery?
Samsung is releasing official Gingerbread to Galaxy S line soon. We will enjoy the GT-i9000 Gingerbread after the sourcecode is released. Very likely much earlier then SE update their device.
One more thing, if your X10 is an AT&T branded device, you might not get the update.

[Q] Best ROM for Vibrant 3G (Noob)

Hi! I've had my Vibrant since February and I rooted it about a month ago when the crapware got too annoying. I've been playing around with root-only programs and Tasker and reading xda and I think I'm ready to flash a custom ROM rather than wait forever for T-Mobile to deliver Gingerbread.
What are the best custom ROMs for Vibrant? I've looked myself but most of the posts are pretty old and I don't know if the information remains current.
Thanks for your answers.

Converting G2x into O2x?

Hi guys, I'm a bit of a newbie to both xda and android development, but this is actually my first android device received second-hand from my dad. I've been able to get around and flash Hellfire Sandwich 1.9, which is what I've been on for a while, but I just wanted to move on to a more recent android version. I also planned to improve my phone so that it can play games more efficiently and perform better overall.
Of course, the problem is that the support for this phone is dead because of Cyanogenmod giving up on this device as well, along with the fact that it's been 5 years since the phone was released. So I was just wondering if there was some sort of trick to convert the G2x into an O2x, allowing me to download some roms and stuff to help this seriously old device and get the most out of it. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
