Am I the only one that worries more about 2.3 than 2.2? Samsung is literally the last top of the line phone to get 2.2....ridiculous....Will we see 2.3/3.0? I mean this phone should have came with 2.2 or at latest sept. I really expect samsung to support these phones through July 2011. Does anyone else? What's your expectations?
i don't think there will be official 2.3 android...
Samsung is notorious for not supporting updates. They'd rather sell new hardware than update what's out already for free. You're lucky you're getting a 2.2 update even if it is taking forever to release, 2.3 is going to be a stretch though.

Word on the street is Nexus S is Galaxy S variant and is running Gingerbread, and since Nexus line is googles developer phone , means source of gingerbread will be available .
I expect easy and smooth port to Captivate by local XDA devs.

We already know the camera is different... I don't think it will be as easy as i9000 to i897.. but yes there is some hope here . Google to the rescue!!!
Actually OP this is why we are all so excited about Cyanogen - BC it has NO Samsung components you can just upgrade to 2.3 once its released.... once cyanogen is final nobody here will be talking about Samsung anymore

It's gonna be quite different. The camera and the soc will be dual core. Could have other hardware different as well.
I wonder how motorola and htc can afford to keep their top phones upgraded and samsung... Doesn't. I mean look at the droid from nov 2009....
I hate to go back to an iPhone next year, but this sucks. Thank god for xda! The devs here should have their own national holiday.
We don't really know anything about its spec just many rumors/fantasy's.
The only thing we do know its a bit curved , possibly a concave display , seen in one of the interview videos.

X10 is not a top of the line device. It was supposed to be out last feb...by the time it came out, middle of the pack at best.
I would not base any standards on a SE device.
we still have a lot of things to play with...I played with Samsung focus and the position of camera&usb&mic I can say it's definitely the same with captivate...

Motorola is supposed to be bringing a dual core phone to AT&T in feb. That's if you like blur. I'm also not sold on dual core either... I mean hello battery drain and for what positives? The soc in our captivate has yet to be pushed by anything android market can throw at it.
The resale value on this phone is gonna be horrible. I sold my 3GS last month for 300. Think in oct 2011 I can sell this phone for 200? Sucks. If the software support was there, they would wipe the floor with apple.

No way. The only reason people are on this forum / using this phone is because this is the only competitive att android. I love android os, but Samsung is so terrible at public relations that nobody will want a phone that never updates and has a broken GPS. You would be lucky to get 200 in 6 months...
Seriously I hope for my sake att doesn't get another good android phone for a while... all the developers will leave this behind

See that is exactly how Apple keeps winning the war. Software support. It's an easy Eco system to buy into because the hardware is almost always supported for years. Yes closed systems. But the resale value for notebooks, computers, and iPhones is awesome. My wife will easily be able to pay for her next iPhone by selling the iPhone 4, hell we made 100 profit on both our 3GS. I have bought 2 3GS, an iPad, and a MacBook air.
I really love android and I love the hardware samsung puts out. I just wish they could grasp the concept of full customer support. They just come across as shady salesmen that can't wait to push the next big thing.
If I can't sell my captivate for much $$, I certainly won't be buying the next samsung whatever.

Sorry...I came from a cdma HTC Sprint hero...and people have a right to be pessimistic about all of this. I've been down this road with them where 2.2 was promised..but never delivered..Yes..we could root and flash to other roms including Cyanogen's 2.2 CM6....but..the whole point is getting what was promised to begin with..

The way I see it these companies should make one of the following choices:
1. Sell cellphones with untouched Android. Leave it like wp7 and ios and let google handle software upgrades etc.
2. Have your custom software but support upgrades until hardware is no longer up to par. Maybe make their software downloadable through the market so we just update as needed but can run stock android while waiting.
3. Get out of the cellphone business and just become a hardware manufacture for real cellphone companies that can provide support.
I personally think option 1 is the best.... And most profitable. I mean samsung is stretched pretty thin. They make tvs and washing machines while trying to make cell phones, manufacture chips, and be a software company. Do what you do best and stick with it.

I don't really care anymore when the official 2.2 update will come out. I'm happy sticking with custom roms until the Motorola Atrix comes out. Hopefully it will live up to the hype. The Captivate is my first and last Samsung cell phone I'll ever buy.
I too am just waiting for the atrix. I've never bought a phone off contact but will be forced too cause I bought the captivate with my upgrade. Its not that I'm totally unhappy with the captivate, just upset that samsung has don't so little to ensure that their "flagship" phone stays up to date. Its too bad too cause it has such great potential.

I agree with all of you. I'm fairly pleased with my custom rom too, but feel like it still could be better if devs had source for the cappy.
Also, my first and last Samsung phone. I'm boycotting them altogether. My next phone Sony or Motorola...CES showed off some good stuff. Next flat screen TV Sony prolly, or maybe an LG; def done with Samsung.
Bastards say still testing but steadily releasing new products with Froyo and even GB.
Gonna have to find the money to break my contract with AT&T cause I'm not paying them an upgrade fee.

Yeah, that's the killer. The SGS line was supposed to be their Flagship Android line for the US...got tons of people on board only to essentially abandoned us to work on new products to trick people in to buying. They can't get us an update for this line but they can put the OS on new products without any problems. Just look at what the devs on this forum have done with a FW that's not even for our device. If they can do it, then surely the makers of the damn line could. I hope they crash and burn, market share wise. It may take a while but if they continue this BS with other lines and products people are eventually going to say f-off.
My next phone is going to be either Motorola or HTC. In fact, I just replaced my Samsung TV with a LG. I am done with Samsung all together.

No doubt...I don't care about the ROM they release; just that source code so the talented devs on this forum can unleash it. I will never run another stock ROM on ANY Android device, ever. This forum is the bomb!!!!
Like others above this is my last Samsung phone ever. Sucks I wasted my upgrade for this crap.

This is the exact same conversation that everyone was having in the motorola forums with the backflip cliq and cliq xt. Htc is the only ones that have a reputation good for upgrading their phones, but moto and samsung have the best hardware (imo). Cant beat the screen on this thing and every moto I own has been indestructable. So now I buy the phone with the best hardware and community support. I have come to love flashing my phone with something different all the time, whether it be roms or themes, so I will never again buy a phone on the day of release. I will always wait untill the devs behind xda have a go at the device. Then at that point I could care less about manufacturer upgrades

I will never get a samsung android phone.
Samsung has been tweeting the same message since the end of December when they knew they would miss the "End of Year" commitment.
But for all those convinced they are evil, go read the forums and blogs for other phones - all manufacturers miss dates, and many times it is due to carrier involvement. The grass always seems greener elsewhere, but the truth is, the same frustrations exist with all vendors.
Then the choice is clear. Generic non carrier phones.
All you guys high on the Moto Atrix, doesnt Moto lock down the phones so you cant root (easily or at all) ? Every manufacturer has their issues. Im hardly a Samsung fan but Id rather have custom ROM's and Galaxy S seems to allow that without much hassle.
I'm not happy with Samsung by any means, but I also remember waiting for a year for the WinMo update for the HTC Tilt 2 and it came from HTC, not AT$T. It's a tricky balance the relationship these companies have. If a new release borks up a significant number of users it could be a customer service nightmare for both companies with each trying to figure out who gets to fix it. That said, it does seem as though Samsung has moved on and is more focused on selling newer phones than taking care of their existing customer base. That's a bad business decision for any company, especially in an industry where product cycles are so short, customer memories are so long and most marketing is by word of mouth and internet forums.
Can I ask why? I have a captivate, flashed froyo on it and i'm loving it. Is it just Samsung that you don't like or theres something wrong with your phone?

Because they made a promise (online and in writing) to provide the Froyo update. My dislike also comes from having had 2 Samsung HDTVs that, while having great pictures, developed problems that were poorly handled by Samsung service. And while you may be happy with your modded phone, we shouldn't HAVE to flash a non-OEM ROM just to enjoy things like a working GPS or enhancements that other users in other countries are able to enjoy.
Maybe you don't like Samsung, but I love them. Awesome screen, great performance, good battery, and well I don't use GPS so honestly I don't care (I would use Network GPS before real GPS anyway).
I will most likely buy the 4.5" Infuse 4G, unless they make a 4.5" windows phone 7 (which I doubt, WP7 has horrible phones).

Yes i know that the Galaxy S is an old device, which already exceeded the 18 months of software update. But well, what happens to its other brother? The market is just a joke now - the devices are all junk really. Everybody can get one now because they're free on contract, and that has totally killed the value of a "smartphone", even if we can get them cheaper now. For this reason, there's no need to cry over spilled milk. I had an HTC Diamond from 2009 up until this year, when it wasn't worth it to repair because the market screwed itself so badly. I (sadly) carry around a Samsung Epic (the superior of all the Galaxy S series), but it'll never be able to replace the magic of Windows Mobile that our quickly moving market/retarded Microsoft has frowned upon.

people who care about receiving the latest update would be on forums like this - by extension you will have dabbled with custom roms.
samsung gave their reason why they couldn't put ICS on the older devices - it involves touchwiz, which is their core skin - samsung aren't going to ditch it for their non nexus devices anytime soon (otherwise every android handset would really be "the same as the next").
load a custom rom with no skins onto your phone and stop complaining, or buy a new device. nobody guaranteed you any updates to the latest firmware - and hell, i wouldn't be surprised if the galaxy s 2 won't receive an update to android letter "J" because the screen resolution is too small or something.
Stop whining and get a new device. I was once a Galaxy S user, and have been through the Eclair, Froyo and Gingerbread era. I am more than satisfied to have this phone supported until Gingerbread. Besides, I can flash the ported ICS rom if I want to.

Spot on! Most of the average consumer don't give a damn about what android version they are using, the manufacturer skin and other stuff about that. As long as the phone is works just nice, then they don't care about the versions they are using. I even saw phones (Xperia X8) still stuck at 2.1 and yet the phone works just fine. Did the phone render unusable for not having 4.0? No right? If those guys (especially techies) still whine about manufacturers not giving updates or some sort why don't they flash a custom rom? Problem Solved.

As I understand Samsung is releasing ICS during the fist quarter, no release date yet.
I don't think developers are interesting in working on it until it's released. I'm running ICS on my phone, Samsung hasn't released the drivers so the developers have put in a lot of hours and hard work, it's not perfect but getting close. The battery life was terrible at first due to not having the proper drivers but over time it has gotten pretty decent. A working GPS is also an issue, again due to lack of proper drivers. I think the main difference ICS will never be released for my phone unlike our tabs.

As I understand Samsung is releasing ICS during the fist quarter, no release date yet.
I don't think developers are interesting in working on it until it's released. I'm running ICS on my phone, Samsung hasn't released the drivers so the developers have put in a lot of hours and hard work, it's not perfect but getting close. The battery life was terrible at first due to not having the proper drivers but over time it has gotten pretty decent. A working GPS is also an issue, again due to lack of proper drivers. I think the main difference ICS will never be released for my phone unlike our tabs.

Agree. Am running the port of CM9 on my NC and while it's sweet and interesting...waiting for the official release is the way to go as its so close.
I seriously doubt samsung will release ICS for our g-tab Q1. If we're lucky it will be Q2, but i'm thinking worst case scenario Q3.

I believe they have stated q1 numerous times I'm new to samsungs so I'm not completely sure if they are true on their release dates. It seems to me it would be a waste of time for the devs to even bother until ics is officially released

Samsung has a laughably bad reputation as far as updates go, if they aren't the worse then they are close to it. I would like to see ICS hit Q1 but I will expect it sometime this summer or fall.

Not to derail but you can argue that all android manufacturers are slow with updates, Samsung gets a lot of attention because they sell a lot of phones.
With that said, Samsung is painfully slow and I think this device stands little to no chance of a Q1 update, just my opinion.

Whenever a carrier, (e.g. AT&T, TMobile, Sprint, Verizon) gets involved, the updates slow to a crawl. In all fairness to Samsung, they've been pretty good with updates to the 10.1. I've seen an update to 3.1 and 3.2 since I bought mine on launch day, and they were fairly quick. Mind you, I'm taking into account the fact that Samsung had to put touchwiz on Honeycomb and fix some of the issues that were left behind when Honeycomb launched. We've also seen Samsung move rather quickly to resolve issues on the 7Plus, including an update that dropped last night that is supposed to fix the SOD issue. All in all, Samsung has been good about updating its wifi-only devices, so while I'm confident that the phones will miss that Q1 deadline, I have high hopes for the tablets.

The reason I asked this is not so much that I can't wait for ICS. It is more derived from wanting an ASOP-ish experience. I am also thinking about the future. OEMs are usually good for the first year of supporting the devices they make. Then they start to fail claiming that the device is not "compatable" with the latest version. I have an old HTC hero that my son uses as an MP3 player. It is running CM7 and the OEM claimed that it would not support gingerbread, heck they even have an ICS port for it.
CM seems to have a good record of keeping supported devices working. I am sure that once ICS is released for the 7 plus there will be custom builds available.

I am an original galaxy tab owner still rocking GB. (I've flashed ICS, but I decided to rollback until the camera issues have been solved and more of my Gameloft purchases are updated for ICS compatibility,) I'm not overly upset that Samsung didn't update it to ICS, but that may just be a personal thing.
Samsung started rolling out an OTA last night that will be pushed to all devices over the next two weeks.

They are not only slow but also the updates themselves are notoriously bad and it usually takes a long time for bug fixes. Samsung's software development side is really not that great.
You are right though, as of right now all of the manufacturers suck pretty hardcore. It's pretty ridiculous really, hopefully they get better with releasing fewer devices.

Yes, it is key to not forget the carrier influences and also bear in mind that carrier-specific variants of, e.g., the Galaxy S2 were not within the scope of Samsung's ICS in Q1 announcement.
My previous phone was the Epic 4G. It was the first US carrier variant to receive official Froyo and Gingerbread updates but it received them well after the "stock" Galaxy S model (GT-I9000, I believe) received them.
So in other words, when looking at Samsung's update record, remember to compare apples to apples. Nexus One got its official Froyo upgrade in May of 2010, I think. The GT-I9000 got its official Froyo upgrade in August. Gingerbread was released in December of 2010 on the Nexus S. I believe the Nexus One got its upgrade in January of 2011 and the GT-I9000 got its GB upgrade in March of 2011.
All in all, not too shabby for Samsung. It's only when you factor in variants (which have all been customized to various degrees which require OS customization) and carrier agendas (I believe AT&T let its phones languish on 2.1 for a good while to not have them be competitive with the iPhone, which was AT&T exclusive at the time) that Samsung's rep starts to take a turn.
The I9000 vs Captivate is probably the clearest example of the negative effect a carrier can have on update releases.
The I9000 and Captivate were close enough that it took developers here very little time (days maybe? weeks at most...) to begin running I9000 releases on the Captivate. However, it took on the order of nine months from the I9000's GB release before the Captivate officially received Gingerbread.
Similarly, Samsung has only been slightly behind other tablet vendors in Honeycomb updates for the Tab 10.1, mainly due to being the first vendor to include a custom skin - but "behind" has usually been at worst 1-2 months of delay.
Similarly, the I9100 is scheduled to receive ICS in March and Sammy seems on track with that. However, the I777 (AT&T variant) probably won't see official ICS until 2013...
For the 7.0 Plus - for the developers the Tab does have, I think polishing the current HC releases is the top priority. Honestly, ICS offers far less compared to HC than it does compared to GB, and right now, there's some major work to be done on the 7.0 Plus thanks to Samsung being asshats with regards to AR6000 driver source code.

I just want to share the news that samsung starts rolling Android 4.2.2 update for Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 (GT-P3100), with features from GS4 and so on.
I think we have the chance to get updated too, we much premuim software.
as for P6810, samsung might passed 4.1.2 to update you with 4.2.2 .. I know that all of you are pissed, but i think it's possible for you too.

Ya know, while they are at it..........Why dont they revive the Samsung Moment slider phone and shove JellyBean on it too. Hooray for that!!!!

We have not even got Jelly Bean for the 6810 yet. Samsung are hopeless.
I dont think that we will see further updates for the Galaxy Tab 7.7.
I assume that neither JB for 6810 nor some other JB Versions for 6800 wil be released by Samsung.

The 4.1.2 they released for the 6800 caused a number of issues, and seemed rushed out the door.
With the recent upgrades to 4.2.2 (Tab 2 7) , and the fact that Samsung already mentioned that dual-core based system will end with 4.2.2, I'm hoping that they have decided to skip 4.1.2, and provide one last update to 4.2.2
Having said that, I don't see myself buying other Samsung products. For what seems forever, service provider & manufacturer's blame each other, for the slow pace of updates.
This and other issues (Apple injunctions, etc.) are not valid arguments, where Wi-Fi only devices are concerned. If you sell a premium product for a premium price, then you should support it.
FWIW I've been running the 4.1.2 ROM for some time now and it's been fine. Yes, the 7.7 is EOL. But then even as is I still use it daily. Fine tab. Does everything I require for entertainment. Actually, while I'm sure I'll go through many tabs in the future I somehow doubt I'll part with the "little tab that scared Apple". lol
Sure, 4.2.2 or even 4.3 would be cool but really. Some slick extras, yes, but anything "killer"? IMHO, not really. If a device does what I need it to in a manner that I find satisfying,it's a "win". Yeah, as someone who just took the plunge to do a self-update to 4.1.2 I can say that the Tablet is still absolutely great to use, even if not the latest Android version.
However, as it was sold as such a premium product, Samsung SHOULD have kept it up to date with Android releases. The JB 4.1.2 is pretty much unofficial and is an 'at your own risk' option for most users (and some have experienced real problems).
Whilst I love the hardware dearly, seeing Samsung abandon it like they did has given me pause about buying more Samsung Android devices. I recently upgraded my phone and chose a Sony product instead of the various Samsung offerings (e.g. S4 mini in my case) specifically because I just do not trust Samsung to issue timely updates or even keep supporting their devices properly. Also it doesn't help that Touchwiz is not a great UI customisation - the Sony effort is much better - and frankly I'd have went for something pure Android like a Moto G if it had supported MicroSD. I'm about to buy a large 10" tablet and I won't even consider Samsung, it'll be between the Sony Tablet Z and probably the new Nexus 10 if Google ever release it....
Samsung really owe it to the 7.7 userbase to do one last update to at least 4.3, preferably 4.4 KitKat. Remember that the Tab should really have shipped with ICS but it wasn't ready so Honeycomb 3.2 was just a placeholder, ergo I wouldn't even count the long-delayed 4.0.4 release as an update. Given that 4.1.2 was only for a few Aisan markets, for most global users the 7.7 has never received a true update. Shame on you Samsung!!!!

Absolutely agree! Have you tried Danielhk's 4.4 ROM? Installed in a few days ago and it's pretty awesome!
As far as updates if I recall correctly the 7.7 was THE tab that scared hell outta Apple moving them to ramp up suing Samsung. I can imagine Samsung pulling back on updates for that reason possibly? Still screws over the people who shelled out $500-$600+ for the tablet though.
But then now with the 4.4 port from Daneilhk.....the GTab 7.7 just shines!!!
Its interesting comments which I think many agree with. To get ourselves to 4.1.2 most people around the world
with a few exceptions of the Asian counties, had to do a manual flash. Our device is still very capable as compared
to older and current devices. Yet we need some movement with the software.
My recent email to Samsung didn't offer much help. They said that no planned software update is known for this tab
and that my tab should still be using Android 3.2.
I didn't bother to make further contact, in fact my tab is supposed to be on Official ICS. As far as I've been
able to gather, 4.2.2 seems the most stable as reported below. I'm hoping to replacement my current 4.1.2
with this soon. Most of all I want stability, without much missing functions or problems and of course
having a p6800 device, we need sim access, calls and mobile data.
4.3 / 4.4 just seems to far away for the near future. Maybe we'll have a final kit kat for christmas
next year before everyone retires from the 7.7 development. We can hope (but our prayers won't change samsung's minds)

i saw a list that samsung wanted to develope 4.2.2 fot them and there were no 7.7 between them,
i dont know why samsung daesnt like 7.7,
its has more power that tab 2 and even tab 3,
its lighter,thiner,and powerfull, and even the samsung alled it amazing,a diffrent magic,
every body that has this tab loves it and it cant sell it,so do i,
i wanted to sell my tab and buy a tab 3 but when i saw that, it was so thick like a book, and with a 1.2 Ghz dual core cpu it was like a 800mhz singel, i hated,
when i saw (( UpInTheAir )) developed a rom with multi window with 4 app on the screen at the same time and floating mod,
i changed my mind, i wont ever sell my tab,
it actuall is a part of me, my life,
i really cant live without it,
but i cant understand samsung's problem with tab 7.7,
why?????

no problem, with the litigation with Apple, Samsung has discontinued development.
Then when it was decided that Samsung could continue to sell the device, it was too late.
My opinion is that it promises to take legal action. In January I will start. I'm not used to being fooled in this way.

There are lots of regions which Samsung have ignored. We can wait but if not new Official Jellybean for 7.7 Users by August 2014 then I think its safe to assume samsung will leave its customers out in the cold. Do we really want wait 8 months for Jellybean though?
I suspect that if Daniel's 4.4 becomes fully functional and stable we might just say you know what, Samsung... don't bother. Still if you can live with custom roms 4.2.2 is stable but you certainly need an additional memory mod like Pure performances to help speed it up and avoid lag, its where I'm @, Might be keeping still for now.

I'm over it. Samsung's track record indicates there won't be any 4.2.2 update for any model.
For those still procrastinating (don't mean you @xaadilhx, just move on and appreciate what users in our forum make with what we've got to work with.

Don't you find it funny that after 2 years from the 7.7 release. Apple came out with the mini which is a blatant ripoff of the 7.7.
And now they have the iPad Air which is just a bigger version of the 7.7. COPYCAT!
Exactly my feeling. Samsung should be brave and release a 7.7 2. But in the android update market Samsung sucks big time.

No AMOLED on the Tab Pro makes it an imperfect replacement. If you want a LCD screen, you can think about the Tab Pro or the Xperia Z Ultra (called a phablet, but at 6.4 inches it's a very good small tablet)
