Hello all,
Been looking at this phone for a while, want an upgrade my desire as
it just lags bit much more then i like and battery not as good.
My question is:
What is the vodafone stock levels like? Where is the best place to buy i.e. shop , online , phones 4 u.
Ive been looking forums and seen people saying online have been having stock issues , so was just curious?
On a side note , has anyone upgrade from desire/similar and can
say its worth the upgrade? I worked out it only going to cost me around £100 to
upgrade which I'm happy to pay - but is it worth it? (After i sell the phone and cancel my current contract etc..)
Also , how much internal memory has the desire got left to use on first boot?
Not seen a deffinate answer yet? I've heard around 1gb?
Any plus/minus is worth knowing to help my decide?
Thanks
I've heard it's a great phone, with few issues.
But I've heard from some Desire users and DHD users that it's not much of an upgrade, in that you could pass it off as a "Desire-PRO." The feel will be pretty much the same, just with a better camera and touch screen buttons at the bottom. I've also heard that Sense 3 is not that much of a big step up. (the homescreen has a different animation, though)
In my opinion, from a Desire, the only thing your really upgrading to is the new lock screen, speed improvements and more storage.
(There's more RAM, but you get left with 197MB actually available for apps to actually use. On my Desire, I get 155MB left available for apps)
Of course if you a HTC fan, and that's what your looking for, then by all means it's a great phone, after all the Desire was pretty amazing.
If you fancy a change, you could look at the Atrix or GSII (or one of the optimus phones)
Sorry I couldn't be of more help, but I don't actually have a Sensation, but have been intensively reading the forums for the last month or so. (I'm in the process of deciding what to upgrade as well)
If the QHD screen is not the killer feature for you, you can quite easily run Sense 3.0 on the DHD, as many people are doing already.

I agree. qHD is a "failed" technology. It's pretty damn good, but it's an "inbetween technology." It'll be around for 4-6 months and then we're going to have ultra-high-resolutions in the market, which will simply triumph all other displays.

Thanks for that useful stuff!
im seriously thinking now. I think i would love the bigger screen size and quality ,
im agains the samsung simple for the feel of it, i hate the galaxy s , as i class the feel of the phone as one of the most important (as doesnt matter how good a phone is, if you hate the feel in your hand then not very good)
Im confused about the quote, you mention ram at the start then say only
197mb free for apps,
do you mean there only 197mb internal memory spare for apps?
If thats true that is a big minus!

No, by 197mb RAM i mean that, that's all you have for apps to use - RAM is not storage. RAM is Random Access Memory. Basically the more RAM available, the more things the phone will be able to do WITHOUT lagging up and getting slow.
In the beginning i was referring to 1GB of space of internal storage to store all of your apps.
Cheers for that -
Heard any issue with stock? ideally i want to walk into a shop on Friday and pick one up, might ring first just in case
Hi Phil,
I got mine yesterday from Phones4U, they had no stock problems as far as I know.
It has around 600Mb+ free for app installations (plus the 8Gb SD card of course). As previously mentioned, there is about 200Mb RAM free on boot too.
Only lag I've had today has been when updating the Vodafone settings (data plan stuff) which needed a reboot, but I'm guessing it was just a glitch with one of the apps using the connection at the time, as otherwise, its been as fluid as a, erm, fluid thing.
Battery: pretty much constant web, market and facebook chat usage on 3G, plus a few 3 or so minute calls = down to 12% battery by about 2pm (unplugged 7am)
rp-x1 - Does your Phones4U Sensation have Vodafone branding or is it running Generic Europe firmware?

Thanks useful stuff coming from someone who brought it !
And yer the screen and speed are my biggest wants . 600 mb is plenty so that sorted that problem!
Im edging towards it closer and closer! Specially as my desire battery seems to be dieing , i was one first to get one before the release date so had it 15 odd months and battery life getting worse and worse.
Also thinking of upgrade from Desire to Sensation but worried about losing the optical joystick (or whatever it is called). I seem to use it a lot for close up fiddly movements of the cursor. Does new software cope without it? Do any new phones still have the hardware?

I was worried the same untill i played with my boss's desire s (without the trackpad)
HTC/android has some new little arrow buttons you can use to be more accurate which is why the trackpad has been removed on all new phones.
Takes a while to get used to it but it made me happy not getting a trackpad

Hi, it has Vodafone branding, but can only see the Vodafone logo on boot and a 360 app in the list. Otherwise it 'looks' largely untouched

Just want to find out what people think of their Nexus S. Please tell me what works and what doesnt. I am sizing up between Nexus S and Galaxy S. Thanks.
I've been using HTC Desire for over a year, and comapring Nexus S to it I can say that:
- I prefer the way Desire is made, Nexus is sooooo plastic...
- stock software for Nexus S feels laggy (compared to CM7 or Oxygen on Desire more RAM?
- A looot of storage space on Nexus without need to use A2SD or any other hacks
- SCLCD screen in Nexus is better in sunlight than Desire's AMOLED, but doesn't provide so beaufifull colours and blacks
- newest hardware on nexus
- up2date as it is google's device
- stock android is much better than HTC bloatware IMO
Have a look @ galaxy S 2
I just want a functional phone that is simple. I think I will get the Nexus S at this rate. Or may be one of each.

Best Android phone I've ever owned. I love it every day. The build quality is great compared to the Galaxy S line. It feels a lot better in the hand and is heavier.
Some people complain about the lack of an SD card or led light. I really don't miss them. With cloud based music systems on the rise, who needs to keep music on there phone.
All other phones seem so flat now...

What is the CM7 on Nexus S like? Does it makes it better? Has anyone modded their phone yet?
I bought mine 3 days ago after having no working handset and having bought a G2x and finding how buggy it was. I returned two G2x's due to continued lockups , freezes and reboots - everyone kept saying it was apps that I had loaded onto it, but I never had a problem with any of those apps on any other phone!
Anyhow, it runs extremely well, very stable, great display, and plenty of storage for me.
People complain about the lack of external micro-sd storage. I've never even come close to filling a 16GB microSD on any other phone. I've got 3 backups saved, plus more than 200 MP3s - who needs to have their entire MP3 collection when there are online music services??
In my area I've got 4G service, but I've never seen actual 4G speeds except for one run of Speedtest. On the Nexus S I'm seeing 6MB download speeds - I don't need more than that!
Oh and if you're one of those people who live or die by your quadrant score - I am getting only 350 less on my Nexus S than I was on my G2x , and it has a dual-core CPU.
Battery life has been better than any other Android phone I've used, and I've used a LOT of them. This morning I woke up after 24 hours and had 30% left.

heres my opinion on the above:
-Nexus S is plastic, which is why its light. I not once ever picked up the phone and thought, man this thing is cheap.
-Stock software is great. I've had zero lag, and the build runs flawlessly. I cant remember the last time I had a force close or a bug. Even on stable rom builds, theres always bugs.
----------------------------
Other than that, the phones great. I currently have a full upgrade option with AT&T for a new phone, but I choose the Nexus S over the atrix/inspire. I originally had a problem with the lack of 720p HD video record, but since ive gotten the phone, i not once needed to use the video recorder for anything. Im tempted to look at the infuse but 4.5" and touchwiz are a red flag to me.

I totally agree with you . I bought the Nexus S in December when it first came out, never had any issues and it is the best Android phone I have ever had (I've had the Nexus One and the G2 in the past and a G2x recently).
I wanted to give the G2x a shot so I asked my cousin from the States to send me 3 of them and asked him to buy them at different stores. But all 3 of them had screen issues. The one that had the least bleeding, had glue sticking out of the top corners of the screen and all 4 capacitive buttons were a different color which annoyed the bejesus out of me .
Terrible QA by LG.
Also the software on the G2x is the farthest thing from vanilla, it's simply LG's software with a Froyo 'skin' on it.
Replaced my nexus S for a G2X because I love new technology and get bored of phones quick.
Got the G2x and experienced LCD bleeding, terrible GPS locking, and horrible battery life.
Went back to nexus s and it actually felt faster and smoother than the G2x. (with cm7 and netarchy kernel) No lcd bleeding, beautiful blacks, and 2 day battery life made me appreciate my nexus S more. You will not go wrong with the nexus S.
I had a Desire until I got utterly fed up with having to uninstall apps I used regularly to install apps I wanted to use more frequently. If HTC had installed more internal ROM from the off it'd have been almost the ideal phone for me. I didn't want to root and really liked my Desire with Sense but did want a slightly bigger screen so went looking for an Incredible S. However on the one I tested in the shop the screen was horribly unresponsive so wrote that off. Next to it was a Nexus S. Tried that, liked Gingerbread and could not believe how responsive the screen was - I was sold despite the lack of Sense.
I haven't regretted replacing my Desire with the Nexus S but I do still miss Sense. The bigger ,brighter screen is a boon and, if anything, since the OTA update to 2.3.4 it has become even more responsive, but it's not been a trouble free relationship to date by any means:
I do suffer with the phone becoming slow and hesitant. I'm sure this is due to one (or two?) of my apps but which ones?? Despite my best efforts I have not been able find the root cause.
Gmail keeps dropping push-email. Earlier on, to restart it I was clearing the app data and then had to re-setup my Gmail settings but have since found that doing a manual Google account sync kicks it back into life.
Many apps that run as services don't seem to restart after a reboot.
WiFi re-connection is a bit flakey - often failing to connect until I reboot.
It may be that a factory reset clears up these problems but I'm not quite ready for that yet.

I've been searching everywhere for a comparison thread or video or anything between the T-Mobile One S and Galaxy S3 . I right now have the One S and I am torn between this and the S3, so simple question, what phone do you think is better and why? T-mobile One S or T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S3 ( we pretty much know the specs)
Sent from my HTC VLE_U using XDA
As always, this is a question of tastes, likes and dislikes.
Looking only at the specs, the S3 is better.
But looking at practicability I think the One S is better.
If you don't care for the money go for the S3.
The benefits of the one s over the s3 are better price, better haptic due to the smaller screen and better touch due to the aluminium body.
On the other side the s3 comes with bigger battery, sd card support, better screen (hd), better cpu and probably the bigger fanbase in the future... Therefore more developers.
I don't use touchwiz or sense so this wouldnt matter for me.

this is what ive been wondering. i have till the 18th to return my htc one s if i dont like it (since i get 30 days to return it here in california). ive had reboots, signal going in and out which has been driving me nuts and wifi calling dropping calls for no reason when i have full wifi signal. also i think the gs3 looks like crap to me and cheap and the htc one s looks way better, but the GS3 does have better features (IMO) then the htc one s.
Galaxy S3:
Bigger screen
HD screen
Expandable micro sd card
Bigger battery and also can be replaced
More ram 1gb vs 2gb which might not even matter
I think the cpu and gpu is the same as the htc one s
NFC
HTC One S:
Much better design and sexier
Camera software is better (i think it is)
Htc sense 4.0 (which i think is much better then touchwiz)
I figure for the money im better off with the gs3 since i paid 250 plus taxes for my one s. but i will see.
Firstly the GS 3 does NOT have a better processor, just because it is "quad" does not mean that it is better
The S/XL/X AT&T/Evo 4G LTE uses the latest snapdragon chip, the S4 dual core krait. Have a look at the benchmarks comparing the GS 3 and the HTC One S and the HTC One X (Snapdragon S4)
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_i9300_galaxy_s_iii-review-761p5.php
Unless you are looking at the version that the USA is getting in which case the GS 3 will then have the s4 as well.
Also just because the GS 3 has a bigger battery does not mean that it is also going to be better
Many factors affect battery life:
- screen size/type/res.
- driver/software optimization for battery
- the hardware that is used especially the CPU
etc.
So due to the bigger screen/higher res, the bigger battery is needed.
From what I have seen (from people who know what to post for screenshots regarding battery life and the required info. ) and heard from a friend (who owns the GS 3), the battery life does not sound that good, seems very average and only slightly better than the X.
Also just look at the atrix, it had a big battery, yet its battery life was terrible.
However, due to the s4 being very power efficient, the battery life could be a fair bit better than the exynos quad gs3,
version.
At least you will be able to get an extended battery though
The GS 3 only has 1GB of RAM as well (USA version has 2GB). There really is no need for any more RAM.
The GPU in the GS 3 is better (the GPU in the GS3 USA version is the same as the HTC one s [adreno 225])
So to sum up, if you want a bigger/better screen, more storage for dropbox, internal and the choice of using an SD card, NFC, better 1080P video recording (camera/photos seems good, but not a huge difference from what I can see and the HTC one/Sense V4 has a lot more features and some of them are great along with a better UI IMO) and a larger developing community go for the GS 3.
Although play with the GS 3 first and see what you think of touchwiz as I personally don't like it one bit, hate the colour scheme, modded apps and feels like a big step down from sense V4 overall IMO. Although touchwiz is tweaked very well under the bonnet.
Also you may find the GS 3 to be too big.
I think the OP is talking about the T-Mobile Galaxy S3 which will have dual core not a quad. Sure it all comes down to preference, would you like to have "TAMPERED" written to your bootloader and documented by the same company that is supposed to honor your warranty ? How bout a VGA front camera ? Maybe the atrocious cut out for the ****ty front camera? How bout poorly designed antennae that struggle to get a signal inside a building ? What about a non expandable 16gb memory device of which only about 10 is free ?
Touchwiz and Sense both hog resources, but TW is much, much lighter. The One S restarts Sense every chance it gets, and has a serious multitasking problem.

Not an issue for a lot of people as some are happy with the stock ROM in its current state and see no reason to root and flash a custom ROM yet as the 1S is super fast and smooth out of the box with great battery life and features.
Also is that not only if you use their method via their website for unlocking or whatever it is?

That was taken with some light coming in through the window (however, it is very cloudy outside, so it would be much better when we have blue skies)
The "atrocious cut out" There is nothing wrong with it IMO.
On the other hand the notification LED is atrocious and probably the cheapest/tackiest way that HTC implemented it.
At least the entire design and looks of the S is far better than the white & pebble blue GS 3, which looks like a cheap fisher price toy IMO......
Might be built very well and durable (not as durable as the GS 2 by the looks of things though) but there is no denying that in terms of "perceived quality" the HTC handsets especially the S due to the aluminium unibody/MAO process are still leagues ahead of Samsung.

I have had my device since release day and have had no problems with the signal whatsoever no matter where I am, just took these SS when in a shopping centre in the car park level (bottom level out of three levels) and this is my signal with a H connection, which usually results in a weaker voice reception as opposed to a G/E connection:

Unless you plan on throwing your entire music collection (can use google music as well instead) on to your device along with films etc. then there won't be any problem with storage.
Over 500 photos including lots of 1080P recordings, along with emulator files, wallpapers etc. over 60 apps installed (including games) and I still have plenty of storage.

I have only had 2 reloads of the sense launcher when I was just using pure stock and it was only after returning from a game whilst using the browser as well. I have disabled a lot of sense widgets/apps etc. and use apex launcher, ics browser +, snowstorm weather widget, smooth calendar, APW calendar 4x4 widget, switch pro, and tasks free widget, swiftkey beta 3 and I have no problems with the multi-tasking, or any reloads whatsoever now.
And for the people who are experiencing the "serious" problems with the multi-tasking I am sure HTC will eventually release an update tweaking it or they could just root the mobile and install this app and then set the multi-tasking to what you want:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/...t=W251bGwsMSwxLDMsImNvbS5ycy5hdXRva2lsbGVyIl0
I have had the GS 2 (on stock ICS) right beside my 1S (complete stock sense) and the 1S was noticeably quicker and smoother in every area that I tried be it browsing, games, loading apps/menus, carrying tasks out etc.
The GS 3 seems to have just as many problems as well, seems to be some wifi problems, screen problems amongst other problems and I am sure as time goes on and more and more people get their GS 3 will see even more posts stating problems etc. just like what it was with the 1S.
No device is perfect out of the box, guaranteed that every single device will have problems, even the iphones, which are suppose "to just work out of the box" have problems with the screen, buzzing in ear piece, poor battery life for a lot of handsets and signal problems as well etc.
And just because people experience certain problems with their devices does not mean that it applies to every single handset there is in the world.....
When OP asks this question here, I assume you ask the same on s3 forum cos you will for sure have most of people recommend one s here and s3 there.
There is no definitely good or bad, or better or worse between these two. Even one s is not HTC's flagship, give it to other brands, it could enough take the crown.
We could only rationally compare the specs and provide personal preference which is so depending on individules. I wouldn't deny that s3 does have better specs in some areas but one s wins in others. And one s has a few issues such as the mao coating chipping off. But it does not stop us loving the phone, rather, it only makes us love it even more cos only when you care your device, you want it better, right? Just like me, I never know what problem s3 has and will have, simply because I don't really care, I am satisfied with my beloved one s and I am pretty sure I will keep loving it since it is almost almost perfect.
So, the best way to find out which one to get, is to see the specs first, then find out any issues with both, especially if there is any deal breaking one, if you still cannot decide, go play with both in your local shops and feel them yourselves. However, I do recommend avoiding black one s cos it has hardware issue, but grey one is fine.
In the end I would say, I lovey my one s! Hope lots of people do the same (of course, try love your one s, not mine )

Regarding reboots, since release day pretty much, I have only had 2 reboots and they both happened when I was using swiftkey beta 3, so it may have been related to that app due to it being in "beta" stages.....
Haven't had any more reboots since the latest beta version and update for the 1S *touch wood*

yeah u can still upgrade if u return it within the 30 days or whatever days u have. i probably will trade mine back in right before it ends. it just depends on how much the gs3 cost me. i cant stand no micro sd card expansion. i know we get drop box but what good is drop box when ur out and u get crappy 2g? its pretty much useless and so is google music. this is why i would much rather have expandable memory so i dont have to rely on my internet connection. it just sucks to give up such a sexy ass device plus i normally hate samsung and love htc but i feel like im getting more for my money if the gs3 cost me the same as the htc one s cost me. if it cost more then i will stick with the one s.

That is the exact same reason I am considering switching over for. Thanks for the reply, nice to know I get my upgrade privilege back. If you find out how much the GSiii will cost on upgrade, please let me know. I will do the same for you
EDIT: I read Samsung states that the newest device should be 199 with contract (upgrade I assume as well if TMo is good). So same price if not cheaper if TMo does or doesn't have the 50 mail in rebate like with the One S (at least for me in Chicago). I found that on THIS article.

Sweet if its 199 with no rebates then I will get it asap. I paid 250 plus tax and over night shipping which cost me 340 which is kinda to much money for this phone. I sent the rebate in but it can take up to 8 weeks to get my 50

Yeah the size is nice and its 720p which is also nice. I like the expandable micro sd and the removable battery is nice as well and NFC support.

Not an issue for a lot of people as some are happy with the stock ROM in its current state and see no reason to root and flash a custom ROM yet as the 1S is super fast and smooth out of the box with great battery life and features.
Also is that not only if you use their method via their website for unlocking or whatever it is?
Is the front camera really that important? Out of all my friends and family that I know who also have a front camera on their android phones, no one actually uses it......
The quality isn't amazing, but it isn't terrible....
Not an issue for some people otherwise we wouldn't have even laid eyes on the device just like the others....

I agree with this post almost completely.....except that I am definately having the data issue. I am hoping against hope that the ghost firmware update will correct this.
I returned mine yesterday and am having the same problem with this second one.
Edit-I think I'm in a fringe/low lieing area. I never get a real good signal, but the indicator fluctuates wildly. Mostly at 1-2 bars or less.
I myself would choose the One S over the SIII. Which I did.
I was a little concerned about the battery but it has turned out to be a non issue. Battery life is superb!
Changed my mind. I am sticking with the One S. Build quality is wayyyy better plus I would have to shoot myself in the groin if I had to deal with TouchWiz, even for one day. It's nice that you can have much more memory, but that's about it.

Sadly, it has come to the time to replace my my trusty HD2, which has been the best phone I have ever owned.
Because of it's sheer awesomeness, there's some pretty big shoes to fill being left by the HD2 (and that is in no small part to the amazing work of certain people on this forum to literally turn the HD2 in to the device it was meant to have been via incredible ROM dev).
Tmob USA are offering me a One-S and on paper it looks pretty good but can avy of you tell me if it't a worthy upgrade?
The main thing that worries me is the lack of SD card (and only 1gb of internal mem if I'm reading it right?).
The other thing is that it doesn't seem to multitask well and at some points have several very intensive things happening with my phone at once (GPS nva, while downloading a torrent, while being on a voice call and googling something for instance).
Can anyone tell me if the One-S will stand up?
If yiu are due for an upgrade wait four more days and get the sgs3. It has ext card as well. Htc one s is a good phone as well though.
The HD2 is a cult classic. Is the One S a good contender? It certainly is. The phone imo opinion hits the sweet spot going by size, easy one handed operation which I believe is necessary.
It has 16GB total memory and 1GB ram. From the 16GB, 10GB is accessible for photo's and the like. Dropbox have a sense 4 promotion that when you sign you you get 25GB free, so size shouldnt be an issue. Multi-tasking has been fine for me, but that is user dependent.
With the S4 snapdragon soc you have a true next generation processor, so performance will be amazing. Its the same processor in the ATT One X, Evo 4G LTE and rumoured to be in the Samsung GS3 LTE variant.

It's one thing to ask for input from people but until you actually go to the store and hold one in your hand and use it a little it won't be the same, personally I love it and I have a few different devices but what I like might not be what your looking for and the fact that you can't just pull the battery or put in a sd card usually makes people leery about getting it but after actually holding it and testing it out I was sold.
It's worth checking out, I had my upgrade for a few months and I waited to see how it felt in the store and bought it on the spot there's something about the way HTC builds their devices that makes me feel better about having one, they are solid in build and lack that plastic feel ( like it's gonna break if you bend it though not intentional it happens) the weight is deceiving and after holding a MT4G it feels so much lighter but just as strong.
I don't wanna make your decision for you though just go in and mess with it, you'll know if it's right for you...
Best phone ever

Did the same switch from HD2 to HOS and it was the best choice of these times. Mayby in future I'll consider switching to another that will have an sd card additionally, if HTC will manufacture such device (same specs and dimensions as HOS but with an sd card ). Otherwise love the phone, battery life is amazing comparing wirh HD 2. Rom development not so extensive as for HD 2 but in time...... It's a good choice to go for the HOS

I switched from HD2 to ONE S.
No regrets.
Not one bit.
Switched from the hd2 also...and im vary happy. But I do wish it had more storage or a external memory. But that's because I have a lot of music. And some places I go don't have good coverage and google play dosent stream well. But if you don't plan on storing large amounts of media on your phone you'll be fine. If I had a do over I'd still get this phone. It's a good solid phone.

I have just upgraded from HTC HD2 to HTC ONE S...The phone will be delivered in 2 days...can't wait.
I made the same jump, upgraded from HD2 to the One S. I love it, the size and feel of the device is great! No regrets here, but it is dependent on your use case. For example, if you can't live without an sdcard because you have a ton of music and images etc then it might not be the phone for you and the S3 might be the one that suits you. Now if that isn't something that will be an issue for you then the One S won't disappoint!

From HD2 with CM7 to One S with ICS. (forced upgrade due to screen shattering).
1) Both phone have solid construction. the HD2 lasted 2 years and expect the One S to last longer
2) thin, the One S is much thinner and lighter
3) Screen, screen size are similar, however One S looks a little better
4) ICS is great. I dont' even mind Sense 4.0. Will try CM9 when the last bugs are worked out (camcorder)
Whats going on folks. I will be getting the One S in several days and wanted to ask what the overall user experience with this phone has been. Any input on the pros and cons would be appreciated. Also I am quite experienced with flashing phones so any Rom recommendations would be appreciated as well.
Pros
nice design
sweet camera
premium feel & touch
Fast & smooth
Cons
horrible signal
No SD card
No removeable battery
Only 9.93 of available storage out of 16GB
crappy screen
Battery life will depend on your usage but mine was kinda horrible

I have to agree as well that the screen is amazing, maybe he is reffering to the fact its pentile, but i think thats a nitpicky detail.
Screen is very nice - Absolutely nothing wrong with it
Storage - You get 25Gb on Dropbox. Local storage is so 90's LOL
Battery - There's no need to pull it out. Millions of people have iphone/ipads! Although it's not that hard to replace the battery if you wanted to (plenty of youtube videos on that)
Signal Quality - With the radio that I got mine with, signal was pretty average HOWEVER since upgrading to the new Radio it has improved greatly. Much better than my wife's nexus or my other galaxy tab.

+1 I have also purchased one just two days back (UK version black beauty) and would receive it in few days. And yes, I have done ample research before going for One S instead on issue prone One X (international) and considering my preferences and budget.
So I can assure you that although its not perfect (but what is ?) its certainly not a bad decision that you made !!
Make sure you get the Z520e with the newer S4 processor rather than the Z560e which has an older S3 processor, I think all the One S sold in the US are S4 based but this is something buyers need to look out for. S3 version should be avoided.

I am sure that T-MO us only sells S4 based One S . S3 based One S is only manufactured and sold in third world countries like mine (and still at rediculously high price around 550-600$). Thats why I got one for me from UK.
Actually the S3 based One S is being sold in Europe as well, including the UK. HTC sent me a replacement One S that is S3 based. The One S I originally bought is S4 based.

* Cell signal is worse than most were used to see on other phones. Not only lower but also more jumpy. It is a bit early to say but it looks like the latest radio update helps.
* The screen is pentile, but quite high res. 256ppi. If your eyes are fine tuned to see pentile, it may look 'horrible', especially when held side by side to a non-pentile lcd of similar density. To me personally, the screen looks fine. It is very bright and saturated.
* The 10GB does feel a tad constrained. It is enough to take a lot of pictures and carry around some media, but not to store large media collections. (Or lots of nandroids for that matter..)
* It seems that on average, battery life is 'pretty good' but not fantastic. With 'normal use' (whatever that is) you should get about 24 hours, including 4 hours of screen on.
One other possible issue is that it can run quite warm under heavy load. Try scrolling around google earth for a few minutes.
If you're not that guy who swaps out batteries all day, and if these storage limitations are no deal breakers for you, you will have a very nice device with this. It is overall a gorgeous piece of machinery, very sleek, light, snappy.
As others said, make sure you get the S4 CPU, not the S3. Also, if you get yours with a HBOOT-1.06 or 1.09, don't run any OTA or RUU if you plan to hack it. The newer HBOOTs are less open than then older ones.

My WiFi signal would be low where as my S3 in the same spot would get full signal
With cellular signal it would be full, then drop to 1 then an X would appear. 20 seconds later back to full
As for the screen compared to my nexus prime, One X & S3 you could see the lil pixels on the One S
Even though both the Nexus & S3 use pentile, I couldn't see the pixels on those devices

So i'm really liking this device. The build quality is great and its pretty snappy. I'm getting used to Sense 4.0 as i have been using stock on most of my devices. One thing i'm not crazy about is the stock keyboard on this phone. Does anyone have a recommendation for an alternative that works well with this? Is Swiftkey compatible?

First off, try Axiom rom. Best sense based rom of all of them. Don't let anyone else tell you different. They have a lot of plans coming with their 2.0 version coming soon. Axiom offers you two versions...Full sense or Senseless(more aosp). Most custom options are left up to you to decide what you want. They are now adding OTA updates for their rom making it easy. Axiom team is awesome to deal with and very motivated with big things in the works.
I prefer aosp but with important sense function such as camera so I am currently on Axiom S-less 1.8.
I find the best keyboard is the stock aosp ics keyboard. You can get it free in market or it is standard on Axiom S-less.
Enjoy your new phone!

Finally got my HOS today
Hey guys !!
Finally got my HOS shipped from UK today (and its a black s4 version, can't get better than that )
Till now I have unlocked the bootloader and installed latest cwm, rooted the phone and tried on using some apps that I use on daily basis.
This is my first HTC phone, so truly loving the sense experience, however I find few qualms in it.
- Biggest is the touch buttons - You don't have a menu and search button quick access. tried a mod to remove 3-dot menu which was very annoying and got menu instead of recent apps , but then recent apps option got deleted and couldn't find any way to get search option . Any help ?
- Battery seems to stick quite fine as I generally see a 2-3% with an hour worth of music which seems reasonable. however browser eats up plenty.

First, congratulations with your gorgeous new piece of machinery.
Long press on home or menu is probably now recent apps.
Browsing eats up battery because most web sites are mostly white. (It's an amoled thing.) Dimming your screen brightness helps. But browsing in bright daylight does eat up battery, yes.

Ok so, as the title implies I'm thinking of getting a Sensation on the cheapside (160€) almost brand new. However I do have a few questions:
1. Would you say the phone is worth the price?
2. Do you think it is a good phone? What's your overall experience?
3. I mostly use my phone for multitasking and gaming sometimes, so does it fit the bill? The 512RAM thing scares me, my Galaxy W said it had 512MB but it had like, 378MB. I hated how it ran out of memory.
4. How is custom rom development for the phone?
Cheers and thanks in advance

1. I think a new sensation is not worth it. You can get a used for ~120-150 USD.
2. Great experience. 2 major setbacks: bad battery life and low ram(in my opinion as I am a heavy multitasker)
Battery life can be fixed with a replacement anker battery, and ram can be fixed with turbo swap.
Disadvantages are: medium resolution screen/4.3 inch screen(kind of low for video watchers), speakers aren't that great.
3. Ram is OK. It's 768 megabytes, but that can be fixed with turbo swap space module.
4. Custom ROM development is freakin awesome. We just got the 3.4 kernel with ion allocation, USB otg, and other cool stuff. We have aosp Roms(cm9/cm10/cm10.1), sense Roms(3.6/4/4.1/4+no sense 5

1) I don't know how to compare it to what's on offer today so I won't answer that
2) I'll just say I enjoyed (and still do) every moment with this phone. I get good enough battery life (and I say that as a traveler who tends to spend a lot of time away from the charger). Performance is nice (everything is smooth and I hadn't found an app that won't run because of power), and build quality is great (except for dust on screen issue which my device suffers from, it survived some nasty falls, which to compare to my dad's GS4 (which dropped from 0.5m on a floor and died), the device is just awesomly built.
3) On stock roms I got issues with that, but once you are rooted and use custom ROMs there are many tweaks available to improve your performance. I must say that CM runs silky smooth with lots of apps running in the background, while sense roms started struggling after some time (but still were good). about the lower amount of RAM than advertised, it's because the GPU reserves RAM as dedicated memory for it to work (like desktop GPUs with their own RAM).
4) Just awesome, there are many ROMs available, just like AndroidSupporter318 said, now we even have ION.
I would like to just add something to think about: Just remember we are talking about a 2 year old device, so know what you buy (no more official support from HTC, unless the end of the world comes and they decide to update it, and nothing can be guarranteed on the long run). but as it goes today, custom ROM development will continue for a while, and there are many users, so I believe as things are now it's still fine.
Edit: Forgot about this, but when compared to the GS2, at least in my opinion performance seems better, and I actually like the screen of the sensation more. These things are subjective, but that's my opinion on it.

I'm looking up this ION thing you guys mentioned, I had never heard of it. Also, I am aware I'm buying a non-supported phone by HTC, then again HTC usually drops their phones at the drop of a hat so that's not to be surprised. That's why what I look for more in a phone is community-development and build quality + hardware. Hope that makes sense!

Anker is a battery that has greater capacity than the original stock battery.
Here it is on eBay: http://item.mobileweb.ebay.com/viewitem?index=0&sbk=1&nav=SEARCH&itemId=321115438849

ION is JB's new memory mangement, and it replaces ICS's PMEM.
Thanks to @SebastianFM, we can now have Sense 4+ JB roms on SEnsation XE.
I have HTC Sensation S710e and I think it is an exellent choice to buy a mobile phone like this as long as you can give it s-off with Juopunutbear S-OFF guide without to unlock bootloader.Secontly they are a big varity of custom roms and recoveries you can try on your device.
The speaker sucks.
It gets dust trapped under the screen.
Battery life is pretty bad (mine came with an Anker battery, and battery life is still pretty unimpressive).
Other than that, I've been pretty happy with mine.

1) like said before, 160€ may be overprized but if that's the common price in your region, then I guess you're still paying a relative good price. Especially since newer phones are heavily overprized these days.
2) I think it's a good phone. I like to compare my rooted sensation to brand new stock powerhouses like GS4. Even though they're much faster, the self-defined MHZ/euro ratio is much better in my case. I like the fact I can keep up well with brand new devices with my more then 2 yo device. I even outperform some phones in battery life.
the build quality is good, it's the way a decent phone should be build. Decent camera with LED and no plastic.
3) Especially after rooting, I never encountered a situation where I ran out of memory or ended up with bad perfomance. I must say I'm not an extensive multitasker, but I'll have to add that I never felt the need for a taskkiller app or such. And I keep apps running on a regular basis. I think a dual core is more then capable for multitasking, and the phone packs a decent amount of RAM.
4) amazing custom ROM support. There are plenty of flavours for both sense and no-sense ROMs. I myself am running CM10 for quite a while now and I like my former sense phone being a pure google 4.2.2. Many ROMs with a lot of tweaks, UI tuning and themes. I can boost my stock 1.2 GHz to a outstanding 1836 MHz
Since new phones are so expensive, the custom ROM support for this phone keept me hanging in on to it for a additional year. I took a SIM-only subscription because I feel no need for a replacement.
overall, you get more phone for buck wih a sensation compared to new devices.

Indeed a disadvantage, the sensation is a dust collector. Many models suffer from the little bit of dust under the screen and the speaker needs to be cleaned on a regular basis.
I don't agree with your opinion on the battery. I think you're not being relative in this case. When are you impressed? Don't expect it to last 3 days away from a charger. But 1,5 to 2 days with average use is excellent perfomance. I can reach 2 days when I only use it to check facebook, news, wheater, whatsapp and a occasional call. Don't forget that new devices wouldn't last a day in these conditions because of their huge screens and power-eating quad/octa cores.

I would say get it for the development and there are things like turbo swap to help on the memory situation.
I bought mine second hand after moving from desire HD.
I find the dev stuff to be great (currently on viper JB ROM). With an Anker battery I get 2 days out of it (I'm a light user with everything turned on) really those batterys are amazing. 2 of my friends (who are both on stock) use the battery and both are utterly amazed at the difference they make.
I do find the RAM a little on the small side but I dont notice that all that often.
Ok back then when I bought this, there weren't many phones available, but now phones companies went crazy, releasing new phones almost every 2 months, especially HTC. But I remember when I ownd all phones with my badass dual core phone, while most people only had a single core chip built in.
Apart from that, the phone itself looks kinda cool with the red lights & speakers.
But with the phones currently available, I'd suggest wait a few more months, maybe save some more money and then go to the One series.
I know a lot of people just think, a new phone came out -> current phones = all crap, but you just have to think back when this was released, it kicked ass

When buying a new phone, you should not think what it was, but what it is. Today you can't say it's a strong device (even if when released it was one of the strongest available), because there are many devices which overpower it by a significant margin.
Anyway, in my opinion, it still kicks ass
