[Q] Anyone know if CM7 (or any stock-based mod) is in the works? - Verizon Droid Charge

I've had the G1, MyTouch 3G, Incredible, Droid X, Nexus S, G2, Thunderbolt, and now the Charge --- and by far, the Charge has the ugliest built-in theme (brown/orange) I have ever seen on any phone and not to mention the tons of Verizon/Samsung bloatware, though the latter can be fixed by rooting it.
Don't get me wrong - I love my DC for a ton of reasons and am holding on to it, but I am desperately hoping there will be some form Gingerbread (preferably CM7) that remains as close as possible to stock anytime soon. Anyone know if something like this is in the works?

while anything is possible...and im not saying this to be a jerk, just a realist...its extremely unlikely the charge will ever see an extremely functional cm7 or aosp
its taken months for the fascinate to have anything resembling working aosp and even now there are issues (mms, camcorder) that may never be worked out due to samsungs incomplete/lousy source
through lte/cdma hybrid ril in there, and the lack of devs who worked on aosp for the fasciante...and thats just a death sentence really for aosp
now im pretty certain this phone will get gingerbread from samsung/verizon...i mean 1. its in the droid line which means something and 2. its brand new now and id find it hard to see it not get it
when that is? who knows...but theres that to look forward to at some point

I see your point and you're exactly right, especially when the GS2 may be here in about 2~4 months. Well what ever the dev can work out for us I'll welcome it. All I need is a super clean ROM and voodoo on the Charge lol
Hey I can dream right?

it looks like imnuts is getting closer to his goal to buy a charge....so im sure you ll have ext4 kernels, and clean roms soon enough

Just got a Charge for my daughter. Nice phone. May finally upgrade my CM7 OG Droid, but haven't made up my mind. Still kinda waiting on SGS2. I would love to be able to put a stock ROM on her phone though. The bloat is amazing.

is it worth getting google N1?

Been looking around alot for my first ANDROID device and thinking about getting the N1 but it seems the device has lotta issues.muti-touch problems, sms mms automatic deletion etc.....what do u guys think should i get it or not.if i flash the DESIRE rom will it fix all the issues the NEXUS has?thanks
I really like mine but if you are on the fence I would suggest waiting for something better. The OLED screen, while offering great contrast in doors, has serious visibility issues out doors. Also the cheap touch sensor really does suck. I have to use difficult controller layouts in game emulators because the phone has trouble recognizing dual touches on the same axis.
If it wasnt for those two issues i would totally tell you to jump on board. But i think you should wait for something similar with a better touch sensor and an LCD or Super AMOLED.

yea it would be pain to play multi-touch games if the multi-touch actually doesnt work well.i did checked few videos of the nexus one reviews and cons, overall its a good phone but maybe i shouldn't give google the $530 unless they fix all the bugs.but what if i FLASH the DESIRE rom will it improve anything on the N1?
There is also the hardware problem with the 3G radio design(search youtube: Nexus 3G Problem)

Yeah it has some minor issues, but the only one that actually bothers me is the crazy screen problem (which they promised to fix in 2.2), where you gotta turn the screen off and on to fix it. Which isn't a huge deal anyway.
If you're on verizon, and don't mind the design of Incredible, get that one. If not, then I say pick N1/Desire, they are pretty much the same (I prefer N1 because of the design and noise-cancelling mics).
Otherwise, doesn't matter which device you get, as long as it's android... this OS is freaking amazing, I swear.

There is no 3G problem with new N1s, it's been confirmed many times over.
love my N1 but the incred may be worth getting.. only 2 days away. I just don't like sense but since you are thinking of doing the desire rom then you must want sense and the incred is better than the desire in a few small ways.
also if you have time don't rule out the 4g evo... on sprint and verizon summer so the rumors have it.
I went with N1 because you get the android OS updates months before anyone else because it's 100% stock.
thanks to all of u but UNFORTUNATELY im with US t-mobile so i have done all my research of upcoming gsm ANDROID for this year but nothing stands out but the nexus one.i have checked if the INCREDIBLE or the EVO was WORLDPHONE(cdma service with GSM sim slot like the touch pro 2 in sprint)but officially they not.its really sad for us gsm carrier users.so i guess i might take a chance at N1 because its better than the current phone im using(hd2).
@GHOST99K
I think it would be better to wait for Google I/O. That's just 3 weeks from now and many things could change then
thanx im gonna wait another month and c whats up with google.
i really want the N1 but i love a good qwerty. wish Tmobile would get the Milestone isnt Motorola suppose to be working on the "N2 with a qwerty?" this would make me very happy.

i love my N1, but i wouldn't rule out the incredible, if you are looking at phones. and, if you can hold out, the evo should be a rockstar.
the incredible does have a few hardware one-ups on the N1. i have never had a problem with my screen only being dual touch, because i don't game on it. the camera is supposedly better on the incredible too. otherwise, they're essentially the same phone. and, because i'm rooted with unlocked bootloader, i am able to put the desire's (basically the same as incredible) ROM on it. i don't care for sense though. i don't know that the unlock methods for the N1 will work on the incredible, which may mean that you are stuck with sense on that phone, like it or not.
which may mean that you are stuck with sense on that phone, like it or not.

You can easily switch to the default android home on a stock sense ROM. All you have to do is go to sense in applications and clear defaults.

damn I try not to think how much I spent on it though, ridiculous...but at least it is not on a contract

Not on 2.1 sense thats stock. Thats only on flashed roms. I couldnt do it on my Incredible sooo...
That's interesting. I was able to do it with my hero. I am also able to do it with the fresh ROM, but Launcher2 could have been added and not included in the leaked Sprint ROM. I believe it was mentioned that the vanilla lock screen was in the leaked ROM, but broken. Since I do not plan on reverting to the sprint ROM, I will have to rely on some very patient person to let us know if this is true for the Hero too. Although Launcher2 runs so slow I could only imagine using it on an overclocked Hero.

Say Hello to a Confused and Recent HTC Convert

I just finally dumped Big Red and came over to AT&T (combined contracts with my wife). I'm going from the HTC Incredible and purchased the Sammy Captivate. I was very active back in the Dinc forum, and would consider myself "Advanced" - I did some development, but wasn't yet at the level of ROM Cooking.
I got over here to the Captivate - I'm confused as hell. I've followed my own advice and read forum after forum after forum before posting anything - the Cappy just seems like Greek to me.
Here's what I'm picking up:
1. GPS is spotty, but not for everyone. Mine has always been dead on, but then again I'm not a first-adopter of the Galaxy S. Perhaps it was a batch issue?
2. ROMs seem significantly harder to cook for the Cappy. I see a bunch of leaks from the Froyo build, but it looks half-done at best. Don't get me wrong, I'm running Cognition and I love it for day to day use. I had read a bit online about the lag issues, but I didn't imagine they would be *this* prominent even after rooting and removing bloatware.
That's about it, really. I'm checking back in the forums every day. I'm loving the hardware on this phone - the screen is fantastic, and when the Cappy is fast it's FAST. But I've gotta admit I'm fairly dissapointed thus far with some of the User Experience pieces. The Samsung overlay has some nice attributes (the swiping in Contacts is great, for one), but there are other bits that are wholly frustrating about this phone (WHY would they make the buttons at the bottom time out before the screen, forcing you to touch the screen to get the buttons lit up again??).
OH! And why did they switch "Home" and "Menu"??? I realize Samsung is a global company and that not all of their products are released Stateside, but it's still annoying.
I must apologize, this has turned from a general "how do you do" to a vent-fest. I'd love to hear from any experienced and new users alike. Thanks!
hi I just came from HTC too, I had the Aira, but I broke it. When I went to the ATT store, I saw the Captivate and decided to try it. I'm with you -- the hardware specs are great, screen is beautiful, camera is better than aria, etc. But the programming is lame, especially compared to aria. I haven't had an issue with the GPS, but there are a tons of software issues on this phone, such as wifi just not working at times, the exchange email client almost unusable, lack of languages, lag, and those lights at the bottom like you mentioned. HTC sense is wonderful.
I'm also having a hard time figuring out all of the ROMS and etc out there. I did install one of the lag fixes and it's made quite a difference. I also installed the HPUSA thing but I don't know how to tell if it's actually working. Anyway, install the lag fix, it will definitely help. And if anyone knows of a fix for the wifi, I'd love to know what it is (One would expect that it would just work out of the box).
What WiFi issues are you having? I can't even "see" any WPA networks. I have a Verizon FiOS router and can't see it because I'm assuming the WPA security. I tried switching to WEP though and still couldn't see it. I've search all over the web and XDA and can't seem to find anyone complaining of the same issue.

I haven't had any problems with Wifi and use WPA. I can see all of my networks (which are G, not N).
The button thing is kind of annoying, so I agree with you there. My GPS has been hit or miss, but I bought this phone used, so I'm not sure if it was a first batch model or not.
There's not much in the way of ROMs. There's stock and leaks, then there's Cognition and Eugene's, and that's about it. All of those are based on a leak or stock build, so they'll usually contain the same problems as the stock/leak build.
We're supposed to be getting a CyanogenMOD ROM sometime, or at least be able to port it...but I'm sure they can't do anything until Samsung releases the source for Froyo.
Anoter HTC convert here, but I came from the Pure.
GPS is definitely an issue. Mine improved with the OTA update to JH7. Its still not as accurate at highway speeds as the HTC.
HTC sense Rules compared to the UI in the Cappy. Im hoping that improvements will come as 2.2 is more widely adopted.

That has NOTHING to do with Samsung. At all.
Do a little research and you'll see almost every phone has a different arrangement of the four buttons.
Just going to answer the part of your question about the lag and lag fixes.
The lag on the galaxy s phones is the result of samsung using rfs file system - rfs has a much slower input/output read/write than ext* file systems generally found on linux distros. This is the lag that is being refereed to in the lag fixes.
so as long as samsung continues to put out official roms with rfs file system there will always be an opportunity for a "lag fix" with ext2 (i.e. ryanza's OCLF) or ext4 (i.e. voodoo).
hello_______
GPS is hit or miss, but on the FroYo leak it has gotten much better, unfortunately Samsung released the phones with brand new hardware and apparently didn't test...
The lag is as mentioned another Samsung fubar along the lines of using an inferior file system.
I think the reason for lack of ROMs is most people are waiting for FroYo to launch. We just got our first beta build leaked this week. Once source for the new kernel gets released, we should see a lot more activity as far as that goes.

I've done a lot of research, and I alluded to that point in my post. Survey the *American* market and empirically you will see that of the slate Android phones, most have the buttons in the order Home, Menu, Back, Search. And I would argue that it has everything to do with Samsung - unless you're implying that someone else designed the layout of the buttons on their device. After all, they are the reason the European variant of the i9000 has three buttons like the X10, correct?

Thanks, dayv. That's a good explanation and gives me some idea of where to go from here.
As for an update, turns out the WiFi issues were strictly hardware. After putting in a bridge with my FiOS router and still not getting any improvement, I took it back to Best Buy and swapped it out. Connected the second I got home. Unfortunately, the touch buttons were totally borked and I had to do a battery pull three times in 20 minutes because apparently the buttons would "touch themselves when they thought of me." In other words, you could see the buttons flash on and off, feel the haptic go crazy, and all kinds of strange stuff on the screen. Yet another swapout and I'm good to go.
I also installed Eugene's Frankin-Twiz last night - it really helped improve just about everything. Hardly any lag at all and I'm liking the associated themes available. GPS on my new device works great too.

I imagine we can also add to this that the Captivate has only been out for not quite 3 months if I recall correctly. So between the newness and people holding their breath for Froyo I could understand people's hesitancy to invest a lot of time and energy in making a soon to be outdated ROM.
came from a tilt2 which is/was? still trying to develop android..it was pretty good but wow i can never go back to windows phone after that mess. freggin love this captivate thou...when it doesnt break lol. ive never had a phone that i seem to get ALL the known issues with and still decide to stick with getting a new one instead. I miss sense somedays but overall i still am willing to stick with a less "bogged down" OS that i can practically do the same with. if i can make the phone do what i need faster then screw the pretty screen gadgets lol

I'm sorry but I to came from the htc aria, awesome little phone. I bought the aria because I thought the sense ui was pretty awesome. After using Cyanogen mods on the aria and playing with other launchers and now playing with tw launcher, sorry but sense ui is crap and for noobs . I got over the whole sense ui about a week of owning the aria and wasn't able to use it after adw and launcher pro.
Sorry had to post it. I just don't feel you can use an androids phone ui to bash another phone. I have only seen a few who use any androids phone stock ui any way and I'm one of them and as basic as it is it still makes sense ui look a babies toy.

Not a chance lol the aria is awesome for its size but doesn't come close to the captivate , that's just my imo though. Only problem I have had with captivate is gps and I really don't use gps, so not that big of deal. The aria, like I said awesome for its size, just has to small of processor to do what the captivate can do. Most things lag on the aria games and movies almost un playable. I love my captivate.
I had bought an iphone4 for my wife to replace her old iphone. Well long story short , I turned a "i will not use anything else but iphone ! " the iphone 4 went back two weeks of having it cause of to many problems to we booth own captivates now and shes sold.

besides the gps.... i am very satisfied. here is why.....
I woke up this morning and opened allshare to stream music from my synology diskstation. Got in the car and loaded up bluetooth to my moto speakerphone/radio transmitter. Put my captivate in my proclipusa mount and Loaded up pandora to stream to my car stereo... Loaded up the navigation for testing purposes and was on my way...
Both worked without issue on the commute in.. rocking to guerrillla radio and limp bizkit. Got some tweets and emails... and the phone took it like... IS THAT ALL YOU GOT!!!!
My blackberry 9700 would have exploded and for sure the "r" key would have flew straight into my forehead... where then people would ask me why i have an R indented in my head... is it for Retard?
I rate the phone 95% out of 100%. If you really have that much to complain about then you will never be happy with any phone.....
p.s. - for people who have captivates that reboot or shutoff, that has to be a defect and you need to get it replaced. My phone has never rebooted or shutoff by itself.
p.s.s. Gps isn't great... but the phone does everything else i need really well.
rant over.

This has been a really stable rom with HSUPA enabled(no bluetooth issues) good GPS (for me) and a nice theme.
It is an international rom so all of the att crap is gone. No need for the sideloading crap.
I tried Cog beta 1,2, and 3 and F-T and I'm back to this rom. It's good for me until we get a good stable 2.2 rom.

That's an interesting question. The aria costs a lot less than the captivate. As far as hardware goes, the captivate is superior: 16 GB RAM, the screen is awesome, the speaker is better (ringtones sound nicer) and the quality of phone calls, at least for me, is a lot better than the aria. Oh and the camera is LOT better on the captivate. I haven't had issues with the GPS (the aria locked on a little faster, but captivate performs well). The issues with wireless for me are really frustrating, but others don't seem to have an issue (wireless sometimes works, sometimes doesn't even though it's connected, I have no idea why).
Based on my experience, I'd rather have the captivate. It definitely takes more tweaking than the aria but in the 1 week I've had it, I think I got everything worked out. I definitely liked the sense UI and email client on the aria, but I can live with the UI and stuff on the captivate considering how much better the hardware is.
If anyone has any idea about how to fix wireless, I'd really appreciate it.
Yeah I'm not gonna lie, we really don't have much of choice on at&t . To me we only have two choices right now Aria or captivate. If at&t got a htc equivalent to the captivate then I would have a hard choice .

From Inspire to Atrix back to Inspire :D

I really enjoyed the Inspire but I started to get all crazy reception issues where I couldnt make a call or receive sometimes. Anyone else having these issues? Someone at the att store said alot of ppl are complaining of this.
Yesterday I exchanged for the atrix and it felt a lil bit more snappy, nothing to wow me but I could make calls and receive, no issues at all. My main issue was it would hardly charge on usb from any pc I used, and it would get really hot trying so right there I said, this is going back. In less than 24hrs I was back at the AT&T store to get a new inspire.
I really dont want to have any reception issues, and I almost believe all the flashing roms, radios, kernels, I messed something up along the way. Heck, Im even scared to root now. I want to use the phone totally stock and make sure it works great whereever I am before I root even. I'm also wondering if rooting causes battery to drain quicker.
So I ask all you experienced Android users/developers. Am I right in believing that all the flashing I've done might of messed my reception? Even maybe rooting might have messed something up? If not, is there a way to make a complete backup right now, so I can go right back to this when I do begin to root and what not. I almost feel like the stock rom, when I went back to it and unrooted before I returned the last inspire made no difference. The new Inspire seems to hold a better signal now. So can I back up the current stock rom before I do anything?
Interested to hear what advice this drums up. I went from Atrix (painfully bad PenTile LCD, shamelessly locked down) to Inspire back to my old N1 because I got a few days of no signal and missed calls in the office. I read recently that there's some sort of leaked magical radio that fixes a lot of the issues, so I'm keeping an eye towards the Inspire. $20 at Costco is a worthy use of my contract upgrade.
Yeah, there are other phones coming down the pike. I'm stuck with AT&T and given this is an otherwise solid phone and how awesome HTC tech support has been with my N1 I don't want to go with another mfr. Also Optimus 3D has only 512MB RAM? WTF?
If you have patience, your issues will be ironed out. Inspire ROMs and development is still kind of early.
If you just be patient, GPS...reception....bugs....will all be a thing of the past. Both devices are excellent. HTC build quality and 'openness' is something to envy. Just relax, I think you made a wise choice.
Just out of curiosity, what rom were you running when you started having issues? I'm on stock with root and have yet to have any problems with gps or reception.

nailed my main problems right there (in bold)...
Nice to see you lingering in the inspire forums DG
I purchased the Inspire the day it came out and absolutely loved it. That one had major issues with the screen. It would not register my touch about 80% of the time. So I exchanged that one for another Inspire and the second one had all sorts of problems. Dropped calls, calls no received, no VM notification, random reboots, and of course the always popular, locked phone that required a battery pull.
At that point I just thought the Inspire was not that great of a phone so I exchanged for the Atrix. When the phone arrived I knew two seconds after it booted that I hated the phone. It felt cheap, it was tiny, and Motoblur reminded me too much of TouchWiz - which is a shame because the guts of the phone should have made it a monster but Moto has a long way to go with their Motoblur. Within 2 hours of getting the Atrix I took it back.
So, I am on my third Inspire and so far so good. No missed calls, dropped calls, texts, no reboots, no locks, no problems at all. Right now I am rooted running the stock rom. I have tried a few different roms - RCMiXHD_v5X, LeeDroid_HD v2.2.2, and Android Revolution 4G. I had GPS issues with LeeDroid and Revolution and data problems with RCMiXHD. The phone has performed pretty dang good with root+Stock so I will probably keep it that way. Hopefully a GB version will drop soon because I do like the extra features that brings.
Anyway, thats just my experience.
This thread is getting some good information placed in it, and a good OP as well.
My recommendation is that you follow the hack kit, but stick to ROMs based off of the Stock Inspire ROM for now. As much as I enjoy a UV/OC kernal, I can't say it's making a huge impact in my day-to-day use of this phone. I'm running AR 3.2, without any issues right now on the stock inspire radio, but my next flash will probably be a ROM like ClearDroid.
I also wish we had an easy stock backup procedure, but as far as i know we're stuck with the reflash + s-off combo.
As a side note: Where the heck did DG come from?! It's good to see you popping your head in here. I started with your Super-rooter and lived on Cognition and Perception for my Captivate.

Im not sure which rom was the culprit, I dont want to bad mouth anyones work as it could of just been my doing and I definitely appreciate the hard work and effort the devs put in. But I did experience a few issues trying the revolution rom, I tried different versions. But I also tried several other roms so I cant really pinpoint. I know I like the revolution but would have to leave it because of issues, I kept trying though.
I cant really recall as battery life hasnt been a huge issue for me on the inspire, but for everyone that has rooted their phone, would you say battery life improved or worsened? I'm probably going to root later on tonight.
Oh and why no 'one click' root/unroot scripts for the Inspire yet? Just wondering, because even the atrix had a one click root script.

Yeah I meant more of a legit release not a leaked version. I have tried RCMix and Adroid Revolution and had issues with both. Nothing major but enough for me to go back to stock.
I'm having an oposite dilemma.. I first bought the Atrix and then after i noticed a little lag when unlocking the device i bought the Inspire.. I had the Atrix for 2 weeks and i have had the Inspire for 1 week.
What i have noticed about the Inspire is that when I try to open a .doc file thats only 62kb large, its not nearly as smooth as the Atrix with the scrolling and double tapping to zoom in. I dont know why this is... 62kb is pretty small. When i had the Atrix, it opened the same file super fast and there was no lag at all..
Also, with websites like adultswim and phonedog which has a lot of flash, the Inspire lags quite a bit compared to the Atrix which has little to no lag.
Im very tempted to go back to the Atrix and just live with the little bit of lag when unlocking.. IDK what i should do..

Well good luck in your decision. I dont doubt the Atrix was a tad faster at some things left stock, but that wasnt a main concern for me as I know on the Inspire a rom here a kernel there can remedy that.
I've actually opened .doc and .xls files close to that size on a daily basis with no real lag issue. Then again I'm using Documents To Go, app I used from my Blackberry days. Works pretty smoothly.

Thats weird cause i used quickoffice to open the .doc and it was really laggy just now, being on the phone at the same time..
Though the Inspire is able the flash roms ....Atrix is by far a better phone. I've played with cousins Inspire, it doesn't compare to my Atrix

I m running the rooted stock rom self-cleaned from the ATT bloat with TiBU in chuck norris mode... No problem with my GPS, no problem with the reception... battery life around one day of pretty intensive use... I notice altough I m not having issues as i mentioned the signal's strength displayed is always pretty low (2/3 on 5)...
I tried ClearDroid but since it was pretty much the same as my 'self-purified' stock i just got back to it...
I don't think the reception's issue was related to the rooting itself... some device is just kinda defective from factory...
In the end it boils down to personal preferences.
I had both and got rid of the Atrix for the Inspire because of screen size and its speedy as is out the box. Don't really see the need for a Dual CoreS unless I'm gonna shell out more cash for the laptop Which I see is pointless since I might as well lug around my Vaio i7. In the end I'm happy with the Inspires build quality and performance.

It depends on your needs/preferences. Specs wise, yes the Atrix might be better but the Atrix does have its issues as well which irked me enough to come back to the Inspire which I liked so much I'm willing to give it a second try. One thing is for sure, I cant see myself getting another Motorola device anytime soon. Been there a few times, and had bad experiences with their locked devices. HTC has been the better experience for me so far and I'm enjoying the Inspire more than I did the Atrix.
Very true about preference...I like the Inspire's size wouldn't want to go bigger. Many hate motor for locking down the BL....but it seems like HTC will be doing the same on future devices

[Q] How many of us came over from a G1?

A fun question. How many of us Sidekick 4G owners bought them to replace our rusty, err, trusty G1s? I get the feeling a lot of us made such a migration.
I held onto my G1 until last month, since I could find no other Android phone on the UMTS 1700 band with a keyboard so good. I just couldn't bear the thought of using a touch screen all day. When I saw the Sidekick's I knew I had to have one. And while I do miss that old workhorse, I've also enjoyed my time with the Sidekick. It's nice to finally have a current phone for once in my life!
I ended up selling that G1, cracked screen housing and all, to a friend for $50. Not only is it his first Android device, but also his first smart phone. With the addition of a new battery and a fresh ROM it should have another year or even two of life in it.
I had the G1 until I finally had an upgrade. Still have my trusty G1 just in case something magically goes wrong.
Didnt come straight from the g1 but had it when it first came out. I thought it was one of the cheapest built smartphones ive had but instead ended up being one of the toughest and survived many drops. i miss the g1's design. Im one of the few that thought it looked nice.

I'm seriously thinking about buying this phone... I miss my G1's kb, I've been putzing along with the og Droid for a couple years (I was living in the states). Now that I'm back in Canada, I need a replacement. I'm not thrilled with the lack of decent camera, but that sweet sweet keyboard looks oh so nice. I do a lot of remote server admin and so the keyboard is a big deal for me.
Are the ROMs any good? I don't need the fancy crap it looks like they've piled on top, just a standard type Android UI would be nice for me.
Failing this I'd probably get the Milestone/Droid 3, but it's been getting kinda meh reviews.
The ROMs aren't bad, we're still improving each release, but they're much better than stock. Not sure exactly what you like in a ROM, but as far as Froyo Touchwiz goes, these are pretty solid. If you do happen to get this phone and find that the ROM selection isn't what you are looking for, PM me and we'll see what we can do to get a ROM made that fits your desires.

Thanks, that's very generous of you! Really all I want is to use the phone as a palmtop computer... browser, email, SSH, etc. I don't care much about eye candy or special effects, speed and efficiency are my main concerns. Not so much concerned with it as a social media platform either as an IT consultant's accessory Oh, and Google Navigation!
To give you an idea, here's my apps:
ConnectBot
AndroidVNC
ES File Explorer
Files Anywhere
K-9 Mail
PdaNet
QR Droid
Wifi Analyzer
SipDroid
Skype
Remote Web Desktop
Square
SwiftKeyX
etc
Didn't come directly from a g1 but I bought the g1 the first day it came out, had it until cyanogen stopped supporting it, and then tried out several different phones and none of them satisfied me. I could never get used to an all touchscreen device and most keyboards were very lacking. The sidekick has the best keyboard I have ever used, I like it better than the g1's. I still keep my g1 and use it for a bluetooth keyboard on my ipad/ps3 since blueputdroid doesn't support samsung's bluetooth drivers for some reason.
Sounds just like me! I work in IT as well and use most of those apps as well, and as far as i've found, there's no issues with them, and the keyboard is an IT person's best friend.
I'm getting the Sidekick in a couple days. Coming from the Mytouch 1.2 I have a couple roms I developed in the G1 section. I was wondering if and why there is no Gingerbread for Sidekick? Just curious. Also does anyone know if CM will support it? Thanks. I'm new to the Sidekick.

There's no gingerbread for it because there's no gingerbread source. CM probably won't officially support it, as CM doesn't officially support anything Samsung other than the Galaxy S. When we get the GB source, someone (probably me) will at least try porting an unofficial CM7, but until we get the source, there's no efficient way to port it.

So Samsung wont release the source. I hope it gets released soon. If so I'd like to work with you to get a CM ROM going for it. I have two CM7 Roms in the G1 Development forums.

Also can anyone brush me up on ODIN, and Voodoo?
Sent from my Mytouch 1.2 using XDA Premium App!
Odin flashes firmware like fastboot does for HTC phones (kind of).
Odin is used to restore to stock from any state other than a hard brick. It just restores system images to the partitions.
Voodoo is the set of tweaks commonly used to implement the Lagfix, aka EXT4 partitions. Voodoo ClockworkMod recovery is Red, and is implemented in the Bali kernel.
I would be open to working with you on it, as I am for most people on most projects, let me know if you ever wanna work on anything together.

Thinking about getting this phone, but dev section seems dead why?

I was thinking about selling my Vibrant and buying a G2x, but the dev section seems to be pretty dead. Any reason why wasnt this CMs personal phone at one time?
I think part of it is LG's quick memory regarding it. Quick as in quick to forget it, and Nvidia won't release driver source so devs are forced to reuse the 2.3.3 release in order to get 100% functionality.

Some devs don't post updates on xda. Some of them give updatea via twitter or other sites. But it's not dead.

Does anyone know if they will ever release new drivers? So basically until they do which is most likely never this phone has been as updated as possible? I noticed CM7 is still updating which means 2.3.6 so is there much chance of ICS? Finally who are some good people to follow on twitter for good roms? Thanks a ton guys!
due to overall problems
I believe there were many more developers that planned on developing for the g2x and bought the device to do so as i did.
But with so may problems at the start i just didnt want to even attempt to rom for this device and be blamed when the phone self destructed. after much tampering it is running pretty well but i just dont trust the phone and im sure there are some others that didnt work on the G2X for the same reason. There are some very good options out there and talented people that are working on the G2x. so dont be afraid due to low quanity because there is some high quality work done.
Not sure it will grow much since its been obvious that tmobile and lg's fix for the phone is to shutup until it goes away. But the roms have the phone running pretty well and you wont be disapointed, But i would wait until oct 12th and get the hercules(even without the samsung chip) will be a killer phone or the HTC coming out the same day with similar specs.
This phone works fabulously with CyanogenMod, EXCEPT that bluetooth audio (to a wireless headset or whatever) doesn't work.
Other than that, EVEYRYTHING works. Love this phone.
Well that's disappointing to hear that I probably will never see ICS running on this device. It's a very capable device and the fact that LG refuses to update makes me want to put them in the same category as Viewsonic (unfortunately I also bought the g-tablet).

will be the best hope to get icecream running. if they do so than other rommers will also follow suite. but cm leads the way on drivers and such for most roms. so if they dont do it ussually noone does. But i wouldnt expect to see anything from LG, they have not shown anything in the way of skill or care to put out updates for their devices.
Because there ate stable ROMs out there and you can only do so much. Other lively dev sections ate deceiving - 20 variations of the stock ROM with different wallpapers and start up screens does not mean a lot of development for the phone.

I've been running cm7 for about a month now and I'm really happy with it. Every other rom I try have issues and I always come back to cm7. It makes the g2x a very good phone IMO
There are plenty of devs to follow just some took some time off to dev for other devices ... I follow fitsnugly because he does some great compiling with his roms ... Morfic has some awesome kernals and faux123 has his aosp rom and awesome kernals... doniqq has his eaglesblood roms ... whitehawkx has weapon rom... so there's plenty ... I'm a crackflasher so I'm always running something different .... I felt the same way ..Was thinking of jumping ship to a different phone but I just live this phone... Just look around the forum.. there's always somthing ...
One of the basic things I had to decide on was whether I wanted the LG camera app with an OTA based rom or all the fancy-ness of a CM7 based rom. Now I'm at the point where I just group OTA or CM7 and go from there.

I know what you mean... I use my camera often... Work and personal use and at one point was running cm7 and was comparing the different can apps from the market ... My wife thought I was going nuts , I was sitting in my living room taking pics for like an hour and a half and comparing pics... There are some pretty good free camera apps that I've used with cm7.. vignette is pretty good...

Yup. Work and personal for me too. I tried a few market apps but I just couldn't find something that I was happy with. It was kind of a deal breaker for me considering I really wanted to stick to CM7 for the ridiculous theme/customization options out there.

I was running this rom up until 5 minutes ago... I just reflashed fitsnuglys 9/27 kang... Dont get me wrong the 2.3.3 roms are great... There's just something about the cm7 and the kangs that I like... There's always something new added to them and for me they seem to make my phone run better ... Sure there's no LG camera but there's plenty of camera market apps..
Yeah, I see updates for ROMs pretty often, every 5-10days, that's a good release period, and if you want to use a ROM that is constantly being developed just run CM7, a lot of people say it's not good with battery but if you flash one of morfics kernels you will have great battery life. Some people run into issues with it but if you wipe everything you should be fine. Faux's AOSP Rom+Kernel run great together also.
While development might have slowed down a bit for this phone, there's still plenty of excellent devs and roms to choose from. I have always preferred faux's aosp rom/kernel combo for my daily stable/very reliable/great performing/battery life.
Now if you want to see no development look no further then the mytouch4g slide thread. That's just sad cuz even the og mt4g has tons of devs working on it and its still a great phone.
