What the hell is wrong with the memory (RAM) usage on this phone? - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Even my desire with latest htc sense and gingerbread I had at least 100mb free ram. With this phone I barely have 50mb free, the phone is slow, skinned launcher pro is laggy and when I try to see which app is eating so much, android system is at the top with ~70mb of usage. If I add all the other apps there I can't even reach 200mb in total, where is the rest of 300MB?
I assumed that aosp ROMs should be smooth and without problems, but my HTC Sense was way much more responsive!

Dunno but I have at least 465mb free on my SGS2

Well that is great, but not really a helpful response. Still, nice phone you got there.

I'm not running Launcher Pro (yet), but with stock launcher I've got 151mb free.
I'm so pleased with the performance of the stock launcher in GB that I was afraid to switch to LP.
With all of these things though, there are so many variables that your mileage will differ greatly from everyone else's based on the # of apps, widgets, etc.
But right now, mine's humming right along.

756MB free on my NS4G

Myself, and others on the NS4G have all agreed, launcher pro hates this phone and runs terrible.. ADW is my preferred choice now.

I'm running ADW Launcher EX on my NS with 2.3.4 and I usually have around 145mb free. Gingerbread seems to be handling system resources well on my device, I rarely experience any lag. Are you rooted? If so you could do a full wipe and reinstall gingerbread fresh. That may straighten things out for you.

Are we talking about the same things here?
RAM = running programs
vs program storage?
The NS4G has 300mb of RAM with 1GB of program storage.
My NS4G averages 150mb of free RAM and storage hovers around 750mb.

I have about 174MB free ram on stock 2.3.4 if that helps.

I've got about 130 free with stock rom/launcher.
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA App

I don't think its a problem with this phone specifically, I think it has to do with gingerbread itself. As you can see in my sig (have to update it these days) I'm coming from an HTC Desire and if I ran an AOSP gingerbread ROM I was having the exact same issue with launcher pro. But the RAM memory was not there, I had above 100mb free all the time. Desire has the same amount of RAM as NS.
The free RAM displayed in running services is not accurate, if you want to see ur free RAM download quick sytem info or system info widget.
Here's a pic with my usage without browser running (just closed it, otherwise I would've had less then 50mb free):

On my NS4G, running the OpenSoju rom, and Launcher Pro, it is running like butter:

I think Gingerbread runs more like Windows 7 does on the PC.. If there is free RAM, it's going to use it to make the OS more responsive.. If demand rises for app or game usage it should (in theory) start freeing up RAM to compensate.

Exploring this further, there is definitely some conflicts of usage depending on what you use to view RAM.
Gingerbreads app management tells me I have 136M free.. While a system info app tells me 77M available.

I killed every single app I could see in quick system info and reached almost 150 mb free (for real, not the usage u see in running services) and even then launcher pro is laggy. When going into sense-like preview (pinch to zoom out) and sometimes even scrolling through screens it feels laggy, its certainly not as responsive as it was with my HTC Sense ROM on the HTC Desire.
ADW also feels laggy.
And I can confirm that froyo works just fine, this is a screw-up from google. And their launcher sucks!
Edit: Ok I removed all the 4x4 widgets and the phone is now ok, it runs fine. Apparently if you have a lot of widgets running on several home screens it will lag. Again, on froyo there is no such problem
I will try MIUI today and report back.

if you have a problem with memory handling try searching ANDmemory in xda. its still in beta but it does a pretty good job.

Talking about RAM not ROM

I limited to 3 screens for now, a main screen and 2 side ones filled with 2x2 launcher pro widgets. It feels much smoother now, but the RAM usage is still big.

From the developer's website:
Minimum Requirements:
-400Mhz ARM4vi or compatible processor.
-Windows Mobile 5.0 or higher.
-10 MB free storage space on either the built in memory or the
storage card, depending on where you install it.
-96 MB RAM or more.
That's such an incredibly high number. Does this thing really suck up a ton of RAM? Are there issues after extended use or anything? Maybe he made a typo?
Either way, I'll probably give this a shot. I just wanted to see how others respond to that being listed as a "minimum" requirement.

Firefox 4 Beta for Android was just released and announced by the Firefox team! The beta 1 of Firefox for Android is now available for download from the website.
Awesome! Thanks for the news
force close on htc legend 2.1
29mb DAMN!! i hope it alot better then the last Fennec. downloading now and will update on how it operates on the Hero.
***EDIT***
doesnt work on the Hero
force close on wildfire froyo
Can anyone get this started? It won't run on my ZTE Blade (Android 2.1/MSM7227).
Screenshots would be nice, if anyone can get it running!
Runs on my Moto Droid
A couple of screens as requested:
First run:
Fugly fonts* when zoomed-out:
Crisp fonts* when zoomed-in:
No flash:
Performance was horrible on my Nexus One (Cyanogenmod Nightly clocked at 1036 MHz) and pinch-to-zoom was a kinda wonky compared to the default browser. Haven't tested addons, sync, etc yet and I don't think I will, everything was just too slow to bother. Hopefully they'll improve that and if you're lucky enough it might perform better on your device.
*Note that I'm using the new Ubuntu font instead of the default Droid Sans. Droid Sans might scale better when zoomed, although the Ubuntu font looks ok in the default browser even when zoomed out a lot. Anyway, don't take the font thing too seriously unless someone confirms it.
Hope this helped somehow.
Runs awesome on my vibrant
Layout is similar to dolphin HD with the swipe L/R for settings etc.
Scrolling is a tad glitchy having occasional hang ups
Pinch zooming is good but text takes a few seconds to re-render
Downloads are nicely handled too... I downloaded a 4.4 mb mp3 simply by clicking download no extra menus... It instantly puts a notification up that says it's downloading therm changes to let you know its done
So far so good for beta needs improvement but this is a huge leap from the alpha I tried a few months ago
Sent from my SGH-T959
Edit: found the minimal requirements page.
Not working on my samsung gt i5500 can be hardware requirements not satisfied, I have to search more about it.
Works on my HTC HD2 with Mdeejay FroYo HD v.3.4.
in my hero don't work.
froyo 2.2
when i open the aplication, it close...
I installed the Beta on my Desire without any glitches...However, Firefox 4 takes almost 50MB of the internal space after my first run without visiting any site... using the browser is a pain...Desire slows down by atleast 30% of its original speed... Better with alternate available options...
Running on my Galaxy S, stock firmware.
No flash though, and doesnt run the built-in YouTube player..
Works on my HD2 running mdeejay's Desire Z based ROM; performance is horrible, though.
I really like the idea of having a Firefox-ish experience on my cellphone, as it's my preferred browser on PC as well, but it simply performs too badly for me to consider using regularly at this point.
i cant download from the link in first post
plz somone upload in xda. tanx
why are you guys posting the problems here.
just go to their page and post issues with their browser there.
works with hyperdroid....but still can't play farmville... Hope the final release can play flash

Same here (on an Incredible). 46MB?!?!?! WTF??? Worse yet, despite the fact that I still have 400MB of phone storage, 2GB of sdcard storage, and 2GB of internal storage left, I continued to get the "Low on space" warning after installing FF, and the accompanying inability to install/update anything from the market that comes with this warning. I uninstalled, and all is well again.

Epic 4g, it runs okay, I seem to have some rendering problems when creating a new tab. As in the link loads but the page stays blank.
Dolphin, Opera, and SkyFire(Best). Are still all better options currently. This is still beta though....very beta.

I agree until you realize thats apps which shouldn't be using ram are forcing apps that you are still using to close... I wish Android allowed users to decide what stays in ram and what gets closed... like a PC. Those task killer apps would be far more useful than "auto" memory management.

+1.. this man speaks truth.
Trying to cut down on ram to save battery life... that does notta, nothing, zilch. The ram is allocated to the app... but if the app isn't using CPU... it's sitting idle.
Then, people are trying to shut down an idle app with a task killer... It takes battery to turn on the screen, it takes the CPU to startup the task killer, it takes CPU to shut down the tasks, and then it uses CPU when the tasks start back up. All in the name of saving battery life? lol... ya right. It's adding fuel to the fire.
Use Watchdog... It will show you the apps that are running and how much CPU they are using. Most of them show 0.0%.. they are idle. Then uninstall watchdog cuz it eats battery to run and monitor the system's apps, lol.

[Q] ram issue ??

i know this was discussed before but i'm asking now after months and weeks of usage
is the device affected by the small amount of avilable ram ????
does this small amount of memory lead to lagging or reboating ??
i m going to get the device soon so i m worried about that issue
I wouldnt say it has a "small" amount of memory, just less than others.
I would consider myself a moderate user, I learned on WM5 and up to 6.5 to keep my unused apps down and my memory clear so I have not run into any problems here.
I have seen a few very brief frame drops in a game while something is going on in the background but it was very minimal and did not detract from my joy of the device.
The built in task manager does not accurately read the available ram as the advanced settings does which can be mis leading. Cleaning out of lot of running processes clears up even more. Sense eats a fair amount but I personally like it.
This is my first main Android experience and it has been nothing but a pleasure so far. Again I am a moderate user tinkering with a new to me OS. I email a lot, text a lot, read RSS regularly and surf the web a little bit. The rest is with the apps. Things have always loaded quickly and so far not crashed.
It has enough RAM. I had a MyTouch 4G for 8 months and now the Sensation, both have 768MB of RAM and neither phone has slowed or froze at all. A lot of phones only have 512MB of RAM.
honestly, if you need a gig of ram, you're either a dev who needs the resources, or your desktop PC is as cluttered as your closet/garage and cant be bother to clean it

People need to stop thinking of Android in terms of their Windows desktop or WinMo. It handles memory completely different. Android sees unused ram as a wasted resource. Android will free up more ram if it needs it. If you look in the notification area you may only see ~100mb free. Then look in the "running applications" tab under settings-applications and you may see well over 200mb available to android. That's because Android has cached about 100mb of data to make it readily available because Android knows there are some programs/processes you use a lot and by caching it in available ram you can access them quicker without slowdown. But this 100mb of pre-cached "stuff" android will kill if it needs additional ram. That's why it shows it as available in Android settings.
Take a look at the Pre-gingerbread running services menu, it actually used to spell out how much was unused and how much was in running services Android knows it can kill to free more memory if needed. A sign of your phone really running low on memory is if your phone has to re-launch Rosie every time you press the home screen. This happened a lot on early builds of Sense 3.0 on the G2 because the G2 just didn't have enough ram to run Sense 3.0. Your phone won't lag/stutter just because it's low on memory. In fact killing a lot of these pre-cached items will be the cause of your phone's apparent lag as your phone attempts to relaunch a process or service that you killed.

Its early software. Wait for an OTA or for it to be rooted and CID unlocked and then you will be able to remove Sense.
If I can say one thing about HTC, they support their phones much longer than ANY other company out there - hell they're one of the first to provide GB on a launch device - and they are also excellent about maintaining their own software (ie, Sense - the bloat hog on any Android or WinMo 6.5 device - as anyone can tell you, Sense 2.0 took at least 75MB of RAM to run - 3.0 has to be worse) so you can rest assured that your device will definitely speed up one way or the other.
but dont u think after all that it is a problem that the desire hd had more free ram than the sensation
i hope it can be solved with an update as i cant immagine it without sense :S
Go to a store and play with the phone....it's that simple. Watching a YouTube video about the phone can be misleading you have no idea what type if settings the guy was using

I have 220MB of RAM free and I'm running Scruff, A4A Radar, and a number of other apps in the background. Looking at my G2x, with the same apps running and NO Sense, I have 148MB free and the Sensation is not lagging like the G2x is.

Wondering why the S6 can't hold apps in its memory?

Well, if you have wondered why, I think I may have the answer.
Samsung made a claim that the new Touchwiz is stripped down and optimised for better performance, well, they LIED. True optimisation isn't easy, but another manufacturer did it - HTC. Below are the two screenshots of the respective "Running" app section of the settings and see the difference? 1500MB vs 355MB. 5 times more.

My S6 is running the latest version of Touchwiz, COGA, and the M8 is running a lollipop custom ROM ported from the M9 (sort of). I sincerely hope Samsung will fix this issue, as even the 4GB RAM Note 5 and Edge Plus are also experiencing app shutdowns. What are your experiences? If you have a solution, please share. Thanks!
Agressive memory management and Sh*twiz cached in RAM causing this. Some custom kernels are better than stock, but no fix as of now.
8GB ram is a must for TouchWiz
Again:
the workload of the ram is not the problem!
I'm running a very stripped down TW rom and I never reach a full ram. I am around 80%. The Problem is that the system is killing processes to early, even if the ram is far away from being full. That would happen with any amount of ram.
Yes Samsung should fix this or should have already fixed that issue.
Yeah it f*cking sucks. It's rendering my g watch unusable since it's aways killing the wear app
they didn't do nothing to optimize its almost the only software to eat all the ram.. it was always like this, and now in the s6 it reloads apps.... normal..i had an s3, s4 and now s6, you can have 3 apps in background nothing more....

I'm running a very stripped down TW rom and I never reach a full ram. I am around 80%. The Problem is that the system is killing processes to early, even if the ram is far away from being full. That would happen with any amount of ram.
Yes Samsung should fix this or should have already fixed that issue.

yes, this ram freeing by killing apps is somehow intentional
According to the samsungmobileuk twitter person there is no issue!
I even sent them video demonstrations. The s6 cannot multi task as well as a 3 year old nexus 4 with less memory.
In my s6 applications running in the background, and it does not kill them
but my Ram is 75% all the time..
There is no reason for RAM to stay empty. It's very normal for an OS whether it be Windows or iOS or Android to use up all available RAM, that's the way it should be.
S6's problem is not that RAM is almost full all the time, which is normal, but that background applications get autoclosed after a short time, which is a kernel setting. My guess is that Samsung does it to save battery rather than RAM, since background apps eat up a lot of battery.

Spot on well said. Have a thanks
samsung will be always like that, i remember in s3 the same problem just worst because of lag, then s4 still laggy with touchwiz, s5 better touchwiz and still laggy, then our s6 with 3 gb of ram cant hold 4 apps in ram compared to other phone that doesnt have the crappy, useless, laggy, and ugly SH*TWIZ. Samsung always be like that and they will never fix lag and ram problems never. even S6 Edge + with 4gb of ram Still the same crap with touchwiz.
i hope cm arrives to our s6, if not we will be screwed in the new android update 6.0 marshmellow.
I think more to the point, WHO gets to use the memory is what matters. In Sense, the streamlined system processes takes very little of the available ram, and the apps get to fill the rest. In Touchwiz, it's the other way round - system sucks up most of the ram. I think the key to allow more apps in the background is in reducing the amount of ram system is using on top of less aggressive app killing.
For "Used RAM is not wasted RAM" guys...
System RAM is WASTED RAM in the sense that there are less RAM available for multitasking. Period.
I already commented on this topic on reddit. Here's the link: https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/3i8hgs/slug/cue76g4
Also don't forget to read my reply to one of the comments where I explain why Samsung decided to have this aggressive memory management.

This would be true, *IF* things were being killed because the system is out of memory; however, that is not what is happening here... even with memory to spare, things are getting dumped.

Yes I am fully aware what he issue can be resolved by a ROOTED user in minutes but out of reach for most - I did it myself on the 5.0.2 ROM. But even though samsung promised to fix the ram issue in 5.1.1 update, fact is, people still can't open apps and leave them in the background. I hope they will release a "fix" and make the value what they should be.
Thread closed as there is a thread already dedicated do this issue >>> http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/general/galaxy-s6-ram-issues-intentional-t3172296
